COMMON GROUND

DAVE ALVIN & PHIL ALVIN Play and Sing The Songs of Big Bill Broonzy

NATIONAL RELEASE DATE - CD & DIGITAL: 06.03.2014 // LP 06.17.2014 “We argue sometimes, but we never argue about Big Bill Broonzy,” says Dave Alvin when explaining why he and brother Phil, who haven’t made an album together in almost 30 years, were inspired to record Common Ground: Dave Alvin + Phil Alvin Play and Sing the Songs of Big Bill Broonzy set for June 3 release on Yep Roc. The Alvin brothers, who founded seminal early LA punk roots band The Blasters in 1979, have shared a fascination with Broonzy since childhood. After an illness nearly took Phil’s life in 2012, they resolved to return to the studio and pay tribute to the blues legend. Common Ground includes 12 songs that capture a 30-year cross section of Broonzy’s canon, performed by the Alvins’ in their signature style of rollicking roots and stomping country blues. HIGHLIGHTS: • The brothers first full length album together in 30 years • Press by Shore Fire Media • Radio by Brad Paul Media • 180gram Vinyl • Both CD and LP include digital download • LP includes CD version of album TRACK LISTING: 01. Southern California hard rock mainstays FU MANCHU are back with new album "GIGANTOID," on the band's own At The Dojo Records. After almost 25 years together, and following last year's Scion A/V Club split 7" with friends MOAB and 2009's "Signs of Infinite Power," Scott Hill and company return with their first full-length album in close to five years. Recorded with Andrew Giacumakis, singer / guitarist for the aforementioned MOAB at his studio in Simi Valley, CA, the album features a slightly more primitive, raw and ultra fuzzed-out sound than previous releases. "We wrote 17 new songs for this record and got our favorite 9 songs out of that together," says Hill. "We were planning on releasing a 'part 2' record later this year but have plans for some of the other songs to appear in early 2015 to line up with our 25-year anniversary In addition to the new release, the band has announced a month-long US tour which will take the band to both coasts and throughout the majority of the country . 04/30/2014 San Francisco / Bottom Of The Hill 05/01/2014 Sparks, NV / The Alley 05/03/2014 Portland, OR / Dante's 05/04/2014 Seattle, WA / El Corazon 05/06/2014 Salt Lake City, UT / Club Sound 05/07/2014 Denver, CO / Marquis Theatre 05/10/2014 Chicago, IL / Subterranean 05/11/2014 Hamtramck, MI / Small's 05/13/2014 Columbus, OH / Ace of Cups 05/14/2014 Cleveland Heights, OH / Grog Shop 05/19/2014 New York, NY / Mercury Lounge 05/20/2014 Cambridge, MA / The Sinclair 05/21/2014 Philadelphia, PA / The Barbary 05/23/2014 Washington, DC / Rock & Roll Hotel 05/24/2014 Raleigh, NC / King's Barcade 05/25/2014 Atlanta, GA / The Earl 05/27/2014 Austin, TX / Red 7 05/28/2014 Dallas, TX / Gas Monkey Bar N' Grill

Jena Malone and Lem Jay Ignacio first met at a Christmas carol party at the andrake in Los STREET DATE: 1M 0/01/13 Angeles, California in 2008. They ended up playing together that night and performed “Walking in a Winter Wonderland”. Jena sang completely in scat-‐style gibberish and Lem Jay musically did not miss a beat. A unique musical friendship was born. Jena had built an instrument she called “The Shoe”, which was simply an old steamer trunk she dollied around with a plethora of electronic instruments inside. I’m Okay was recorded during the summer of 2013 as a follow up to their 2009 debut EP. Of this newest effort Jena says, “I love the art of freestyle. For me, I always start there as a songwriter, but this record was different. I wanted to tell stories everyone could feel and understand, not just me.”

Jena Malone has been acting for over 19 years in independent and blockbuster films. Most recently seen in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and soon to be seen in Paul Thomas Anderson's film Inherent Vice. She has self-‐released two albums under Jena Malone and her Bloodstains. American Analog Set is a soft-spoken wonder … the group's new record Know by Heart is its catchiest, most dreamy effort to date. – Chicago Tribune AmAnSet bustles through 12 songs in 40 minutes, hitting a near-magical stride; the group weaves jittery guitar lines around dreamy vocals, letting the tinkle of the organ and the brush-heavy percussion carry the melodic and structural weight of the songs' reveries. – The Onion AV Club American Analog Set create quietly engaging hymns that make you want to pay attention (8.0) - Pitchfork This reissue comes with a digital download that includes all 21 of the band’s previously-unreleased original 4-track demos from the Know By Heart sessions. Artist: Jon Hassell Title: City: Works of Fiction 6.3.2014

WAST008CD/WAST008LP

Overview Combining his trademark brand of Fourth World fusion with new influences from the emerging hip-hop scene, this 1990 album is a landmark release in Jon Hassell's career to date. Futuristic sci-fi funk with a completely melted production aesthetic – instruments and samples blur into one another in the manner of the best dub records. Presented here in a deluxe triple disc edition alongside a 1989 concert performance of the City group, mixed live by Brian Eno, and a carefully edited sequence of alternate takes, demos and re-interpretations by current electronic producers that presents a parallel dimension version of the original release. Remix artists include new Warp artist patten as well as 808 State, No UFOs, Bass Clef and Some Truths The vinyl edition features the original album re-cut as a double album for extra wide grooves and improved bass response (the original issue had an hour of music squeezed onto a single piece of vinyl) and a download card with access to the audio content of all 3 discs.

WASTEP2 6.3.2014

Overview

A trumpet player, composer and musical conceptualist, Jon Hassell’s bisects a multitude of strands in the history of the avant-garde and the developmentof genuinely new forms of music. Having studied under Karl-Heinz Stockhausen in Cologne (alongside future members of the band Can), he played on the original recording of Terry Riley’s In C (1968).A growing interest in the indigenous music ofother cultures led to the invention of his ‘Fourth World’ blend of different styles, which caught the ear of Brian Eno, who collaborated with Hassell on the Possible Musics album, and used many of the Fourth World ideas on his My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts album with David Byrne. He has played on albums by artists including Talking Heads, Peter Gabriel and Bjork, composed film soundtracks and contributed to theatre works. Jon continues to tour and make new music – he is currently collaborating with techno legends Moritz Von Oswald and Carl Craig for a proposed album on Tresor Records. This remix 12" sees reinterpretations of Jon Hassell tracks by Bandshell (Hessle Audio/Mute), patten (Warp), No UFO’s (Public Information) and Some Truths (Magic + Dreams). 3 tracks taken from the ‘Psychogeography’ bonus disc of All Saints expanded reissue of Jon Hassell’s City: Works Of Fiction album (WAST008), plus the Bandshell remix from the Greater Lengths All Saints label compilation and remix album (WAST034). Current producers and artists working in a sympathetic idiom were invited to re-work and re-interpret some of the highlights from the All Saints archive.

Overview

Hans-Joachim Roedelius is one of the prime movers in the strand of experimental music that emerged from 1970s Germany sometimes referred to as “kosmische music”. As a founding member of the highly influential groups Cluster and Harmonia, he was part of a vibrant scene that included Neu!, Kraftwerk and Can. He started releasing solo work in 1978, combining his minimal piano style with electronic production details. In the 1990s he collaborated with Italian musicians Nicola Alesini (saxophone) and Fabio Capanni (guitar) in ‘ambient jazz trio’ Aquarello, who released three albums, the final installment being issued by All Saints. Whilst overseeing the reissue of a vast archive of seminal albums, Roedelius shows no signs of slowing down as he enters his eighth decade. This remix 12" sees Roedelius reinterpretations by Peaking Lights (Mexican Summer/Domino) and Hieroglyphic Being (Mathematics/Soul Jazz). The 2 tracks were taken from the Greater Lengths All Saints label compilation and remix album (WAST034) also being released June 3.The current producers and artists working in a sympathetic idiom were invited to re-work and re-interpret someof the highlights from the All Saints archive. by Peaking Lights (Mexican Summer/Domino)and Hieroglyphic Being (Mathematics/Soul Jazz)

WASTEP3 6.3.2014

WASTEP1 6.3.2014

Overview

Emerging from the 60s US avant-garde and originally influenced by the likes of JohnCage and Morton Feldman, Harold Budd rebelled against the heavily conceptual works of his peers to explore his own artistic path of "existential prettiness". His early work caught the ear of Brian Eno, who invited him to England to record his firstcommercially released work The Pavilion Of Dreams (Obscure – 1978). This working relationship continued over the next decade, producing landmark works such as The Plateaux Of Mirror (EG – 1980) and The Pearl (EG – 1984). He went on to collaborate with other like-minded souls including the Cocteau Twins, John Foxx and Jah Wobble, and release an impressive stream of delicately constructedsolo works, manyof which have been issued on All Saints. This all new remix 12" sees Budd reinterpreted by patten (Warp), Odd Nosdam(Anticon) and Personable (Opal Tapes). Personable is the techno alter ego of M Geddes Gengras (Robedoor, Pocahaunted, Sun Araw & The Congos, LA Vampires) 3 tracks taken from the Greater Lengths All Saints label compilation and remix album(WAST034). Current producers and artists working in a sympathetic idiom were invited to re-work and re-interpret some of the highlights from the All Saints archive. The full-length Personable re-work of the 20-minute epic “Dark Star”is exclusive to this EP. A shorter edit was used on the compilation due to space restrictions.

Overview

Laraaji is a musician, mystic and laughter meditation practitioner based in New York City. He began playing music on the streets in the 1970s, improvising trance inducing jams on a modified autoharp processed through various electronic effects. Brian Eno saw him playing one night in Washington Square Park and invited him to record an album for his seminal Ambient series (Ambient 3: Day Of Radiance, released 1980). Laraaji went onto release a prolific series of albums for a wide variety of labels, many of which he recorded himself at home and sold as cassettes during his street performances. In recent years he has been collaborating with a new generation of underground musicians, such as the 2011 album he recorded for the acclaimed FRKWYS series with Blues Control (That Healing Feeling). As well as the reissues of his music on All Saints, in the past year he has been included on Light In The Attic compilation I Am The Center: Private Issue New Age Music In America 1950 - 1990, and been a live guest of Deerhunter and Jonathan Wilson. This all new remix 12" sees reinterpretations of Laraaji tracks by Bee Mask (Spectrum Spools), Ela Orleans (Night People), Sun Araw (Not Not Fun/Drag City) and Motion Sickness Of Time Travel (Digitalis/Boomkat Editions) These 4 tracks taken from the Greater Lengths All Saints label compilation and remix album (WAST034). Current producers and artists working in a sympathetic idiom were invited to re-work and re-interpret some of the highlights from the All Saints archive. Coincides with a 3LP vinyl reissue of Laraaji’s Celestial Music 1978 – 2011 retrospective album (WAST036LP).

The second of the Decadub vinyl-only releases dedicates three of its four sides to a volley of woozy and twisted footwork from most of the key members of Chicago's Teklife crew. Side One starts with DJ Rashad and Gant Man's squiggly 303 banger 'Acid Life' and moves onto Taso & Djunya's Darwinian banger 'Only The Strong Will Survive'. Side Two descends into DJ Spinn's bombastic 'All My Teklife' and then Earl, Rashad & Taye's 'Bombaklot' which takes Hyperdub full circle with a yardcore bomb like a 2014 upgrade of the label's early days. Side Three leads with DJ Earl's immaculate diva vocal cut-up of 'I'm Gonna Get You', then moves on into DJ Taye's fizzling R&B jam 'Get Em Up’ and the stone cold, warped humour of 'Icemaster' by Heavee. On the fourth and final side, Tokyo-based ally Quarta330 returns to craft ‘Hanabi’, an epic, uptempo synthesiser jam. Young gun Champion follows with ‘Power Cut’, its minimal, energetic and militant kicks and bass molded with cowbell and lots of tight edits, before dropping some neat keys and a warping bassline two thirds in. Ikonika finishes things off with the solemn march of 'Tug Zone', opening slow but building in flickering high hats and gaseous cymbals into a track which could have emanated from Battlestar Galactica.

We welcome Flowdan back to Hyperdub. It was he, alongside Killa P, who vocaled one of Hyperdub's early hits, the now classic 'Skeng' by the Bug, As a founding member of Roll Deep, Flowdan's guttural yardstyle delivery and booming flow became instantly identifiable amongst the static and anarchy of grime's early-2000s pirate radio presence. Surprisingly, this is his first EP as a solo artist and it's appropriately named 'Serious Business'. There are four equally serious producers working on beats here. 'Ambush' is produced by Newham Generals’ Footsie and sets the tone with hip hop beats and a dusky feel with a tale explaining that if he was to be ambushed he'd stand up for himself on his own, his vocals flipping between an angry bark to a stentorian chant. 'People Power' is about stinging chants of insurrectionary rage over a classic, muscular, lurching Bug riddim. 'F About' is produced by Coki from Digital Mystikz - one of his first beats for a grime MC, and it's a good one. Uncompromising lyrics over deadly, rolling snares, and a panic inducing mix of piano, synth horns and off key bleeps.'No Gyal Tune' is a killer battle track, produced by Masro with crisp rolling snares, weaponized bass drums, with lyrics promising a bloody end to all tin pan soundboys. Don't test.

“ANGELORUM” STREET DATE: MAY 13, 2014

“Angelorum” is an exotic rock and roll record. Vibraphones and flutes dance intermittently with Apollo’s raspy cry on the big-beated track “White Lines.” And what could easily be a soft bossanova rallies to anthemic levels on the single “Spinnin.” Its a big, bold, new sound for the artist, but Apollo is not all shout and swagger. The record’s title track, “Angelorum” was just a sign he saw painted on the side of a building in Mexico. The singer recalls, “I liked the sound of it. Later our piano player told me what it meant and i couldn’t have been more elated.” Of course Apollo does not mention what it means. Its a lot of strange sentiment, and it fits. “Angelorum” is indicative of Apollo’s distinctive talent, and locks in that fine line of fiery anthems and cool, cool delivery. Soul Jazz Records presents

CALYPSO Musical Poetry In The Caribbean 1955-69

Street Date: June 3rd 2014

This new album features the music of Calypso in its many forms – from its birthplace, the island of Trinidad, as well as other Caribbean islands (Jamaica and the Bahamas), and its subsequent onwards journey (Britain, Panama and the United States), recorded during the years 1955-69. Calypso is one of the most exciting and enduring forms of musical expression to emerge from the beginning of the 20 th century swinging, persuasive rhythm, brilliantly expressive melodies and lyrics of great humour and wisdom. Here you will find Calypso’s aristocracy & royalty – Lord Kitchener, Lord Cobra, Lord Growler, King Fighter, Lord Byron, The Mighty Viper, Lord Ivanhoe & more. Their songs vividly capture the popular news stories and fashions of the era - the first Man on the Moon, James Bond’s Pussy Galore, bed bugs, voodoo, love in cemeteries, West Indians in England, Bossa Nova, the Iron Curtain, and a white man who had a black heart transplant operation. This album celebrates a criminally unsung and under-documented art form in our modern age and comes with extensive sleevenotes on the history, social context and geography of Calypso, as well as exclusive and stunning photography, original artwork and notes on all the artists and songs featured.

Artist: Bok Bok Title: Your Charizmatic Self 6.3.2014

NS016-12

Overview Night Slugs are pleased to announce an EP of new material from the producer and label head; his first full work since 2011's 'Southside EP' and its club anthem 'Silo Pass'. Expanding on a theme first started on the ‘MJT’ white label in 2012, this EP sees Bok create a replicant funk, built with fragments of classics, arranged with a grimelogic and weaponised with 2014 sub-weight. The video for single 'Melba’s Call’, which features red-hot LA-based vocalist Kelela, is the setting for the entire EP, reverb from the bare concrete walls of the bunker-studio can be heard throughout. A central greenhouse is filled with a steamy jungle of corporate flora, unsettlingly hyper-real, like the warmth of the record's sample material is being rendered bionic, pumped through military-grade equipment.

Format: 2X12” Vinyl Boxlot: TBD Price: $ 21.99 Packaging: 2 12" vinyl in black paper inners in 5mm spine with download card containing digital bonus track

Running through the tracks is the influence of London’s futuristic millennial music, grime. The brutalism of alternating 8-bar structures is the DNA of Bok Bok’s productions. These tracks continue in the tradition of R&G (Rhythm & Grime) and its project to blend the soul of R&B with the potency of grime.Propelled by melody and at times almost sadistic in their repetition, the club tracks of the record play with pain and pleasure, while the two shorter "Greenhouse" tracks allow brief moments of stillness. As for ‘Your Charizmatic Self’? It's a reference to the source material and the exuberance of original live performances captured and automated. It's also a message of charm and positivity, of self-realization.

What better place to create the ultimate driving album than Los Angeles, where Brian Reitzell lives and works? You might not immediately recognise his name, but you’ll certainly have stumbled across at least one corner of his massive portfolio, whether as the drummer in Redd Kross and with French electronica artists Air, or as one of Hollywood’s most sought-after music supervisors and composers. That’s his day job: Brian is the guy who gets to choose the music you hear in TV series and movies – the last year alone, he’s worked on Sofia Coppola’s The Bling Ring, NBC’s TV series Hannibal, Starz TV series Boss (starring Kelsey Grammer) and Ubisoft’s mind blowing new video game Watch Dogs. Brian has turned the job into a creative practice (he thinks of himself as a ‘music conceptualist’), not only using his impeccable music taste to select more eclectic and adventurous cuts than you normally hear on screen, but also commissioning and producing new music from some of rock and pop’s most reticent geniuses. For Sofia Coppola’s Lost In Translation, he persuaded My Bloody Valentine’s Kevin Shields out of obscurity, and he also secretly commissioned new music from the reclusive former singer of Talk Talk, Mark Hollis – a snippet of which was used on the Starz series Boss. Originally from San Francisco, Reitzell moved to LA in the early 90s to play drums in punk rock outfit Redd Kross, Brian ended up playing drums with French electronica duo Air on their 2001 album 10,000 Hz Legend, after recording the score for Sofia Coppola’s debut, The Virgin Suicides, which Reitzell also music-supervised. Auto Music – his first solo release – began as a series of private recordings made at his studio to test out techniques and explore textures and sounds. „I wasn’t making a pop record,“ Brian says, „I was experimenting with sounds to further my knowledge for creating music for my film projects and exploring new ways to make music.“ So on ‘Last Summer’, inspired by a conversation with Kevin Shields (who also plays organ on the track), Brian held a twonote, seven-minute chord on an organ five times, then stacked the differently-EQed layers on top of each other. On ‘Ozu’ and ‘Honeycomb’ he bowed the strings inside a piano and applied eight different kinds of analog tremolo effects. But the end results are far from dry experimentalism – instead they’re a marvellous evocation of coasting along California’s freeways, revelling in the blissful sensation of forward motion. „I wanted to make music that felt like my drive from my house to my studio – roughly six miles. I liked the structure of the drive: never repeating, unless I forgot something at home and had to go back! It was sort of like ‘event music’ where little things come into view and then another one takes its place as you drive past... very Krautrock, I guess.“ And indeed you’ll hear elements of Neu! and Krautrock on parts one and two of ‘Auto Music’, as well as MBV shoegaze on ‘Ozu’ and a brilliant homage to the sparse style of Laughing Stock-era Talk Talk on ‘Gaudi’. Brian screened DVDs in his studio while making the album, so each track has a specific visual key, such as Spanish 70s art film Spirit Of The Beehive or the early pre Fantasia animations of Oskar Fischinger. ‘“ had been doing so much scoring to picture that I needed to make music where I was totally free of any story narrative or picture frames.“ As well as The Bling Ring, Brian Reitzell recently worked as music supervisor on Gus Van Sant’s ecological movie Promised Land, scored Elizabeth Price’s video installation West Hinder (Price went on to win Britain’s prestigious Turner Prize), has been scoring a new season of Hannibal and has collaborated with Oneohtrix Point Never on the Boss and Bling Ring scores. Meanwhile, buckle up, set the cruise control for the heart of the sunset, and prepare to be transported by Auto Music. AUK111LP / AUK111CD MINI LP / CD LP $16.99 / CD $10.99 3rd June 2014 ‘a’ Records LP 5055869500555 CD 5055869500548 ROCK

10” is available on 180 GRM black vinyl After touring the UK with Loop & Australia in December 2013 with the Brian Jonestown Massacre . The KVB's new six track EP is the culmination of a week long recording session at Anton Newcombe's studio in Berlin last autumn . During which they recruited the help of Joe Dilworth (Stereolab) to contribute live drums to the recordings , this was the first time the band have worked outside of their own studio set up at their home in South London. 'Out Of Body' is a further exploration of the bands interest in phenomenology, bodily immersion and consciousness. Introspective lyrics are suspended in dream like melodies, further expanding upon the duo's hypnotic aesthetic which they explore both sonically and visually on the record. The KVB is the audio/visual project of London youngsters Nicholas Wood & Kat Day, who combine reverb heavy wall of sound guitars, minimal haunting strings and grinding bass synths, messed up motorik drum machine beats and delay drenched vocals with a backdrop of imagery to accompany the symphony, that’s nothing short of life affirming. Such full sensory assaults have seen The KVB’s live following swell and their gig schedule become busier all the time, with multiple European headline tours as well as a West Coast USA Tour in summer 2012 since the release of their debut album ‘Always Then’. The KVB is a group with a sense of urgency about it, to do what they need to do, with full commitment and without delay. CARDINAL—CARDINAL FIRE RECORDS DIGI CD FIRECD215 80923612523 $15.99 Twenty years after its initial release, the orchestral pop classic that is the self-titled debut from Cardinal is being reissued by Fire Records. This CD includes demos and bonus tracks and a 16page booklet with new liner notes featuring an entertaining oral history of the making of the record with Davies, Matthews and Producer Tony Lash (Heatmiser, Elliott Smith.)
