THE FELICE BROTHERS
LIFE IN THE DARK WORLDWIDE RELEASE DATE (CD/LP): JUNE 24, 2016
The Felice Brothers return with nine songs in their unique blend of folk, country, rock and soul. Uncut magazine has described the band as “just glorious.” Life in the Dark was recorded in the garage on a farm in upstate New York, with no distractions and no outside influences. So it’s not surprising the band produced the album themselves. Highlights include “Aerosol Ball,” and “Plunder.” The Felice Brothers will be playing select shows and festivals throughout the spring and summer, with a US Tour scheduled for the fall and UK/EU dates in the winter.
“The Felice Brothers aspire to the weird, woozy vibe of The Band’s The Basement Tapes, and often approach it.” - SPIN HIGHLIGHTS: • First album since 2014’s Favorite Waitress • The Felice Brothers have sold over 80,000 records in the US • A video for every song on the album • Festival dates in summer 2016 (TBA) • AAA, Americana radio campaign TRACK LISTING: 1. OVERVIEW: We Are Scientists, the Brooklyn, New York based power pop troupe are set to return this coming June 24th with their fifth album. Titled ‘Helter Seltzer’ and released via 100% Records, it is preceded by the single release of ‘Buckle’, the album’s opening track, available today for stream and download. For this album We Are Scientists asked their ex-keyboard player Max Hart to produce. Max had just finished a three-year stint as the keyboardist for international super-mega-person Katy Perry, choosing as his final gig Ms. Perry’s performance at the 2015 Super Bowl. After a number of small producing projects squeezed in between tours, he was ready to roll up his sleeves and dive in. Max rented a studio space in Brooklyn’s DUMBO neighbourhood, outfitting it with gear he had accumulated over a decade of obsessive internet shopping. In early March, the team got to work. At their disposal was a trove of new We Are Scientists demos as well as Max’s inside-out familiarity with hits like ‘Teenage Dream’ and ‘Firework’ and ‘Dark Horse.’ Sifting through the options, a direction emerged: they would use the tones and trickery of radio pop to add a sweet sheen to the new crop of distinctively We Are Scientists songs. Months of toil and trial and error finally brought the right balance, and the finished recordings were shipped to mixer Chris Coady at Sunset Sound in L.A. Coady has quietly emerged in recent years as one of the finest mixers of glossy indie pop, with credits that include Future Islands, Beach House, and !!!. In ‘Helter Seltzer’ he knew he had an album that should shimmer but also bang, and he applied all of the magic and sauce at his disposal to insure it did exactly that. Finally, the music was passed through the deluxe mastering machine that are the ears of Greg Calbi (Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Noel Gallagher, Perfume Genius) to add a coat of heft and sparkle, and in January of 2016, nearly a year after construction began, the album was pronounced complete. "We've always made overtures toward being a pop band, but we've generally had the inclination to obscure those pop leanings in grit and chaos — to screw them up with fuzzed-out tones and raucous performances," says guitarist and vocalist Keith Murray. "It's made us really think about what our musical genre is. We're not punk — we're too interested in making our songs as pretty as possible. We're not straight-up rock — our tastes our too left-of-centre. We're not indie-rock — our heads aren't far enough up our own butts. So finally, after putting as much time into thinking about it as we're apt to — about ten minutes, over beers — we decided that our genre is 'Helter Seltzer.'" "Declaring a new genre is obviously douchey as hell, though, and impossible to deliver with a straight face," adds bassist Chris Cain, "so we did the noble thing and just made ‘Helter Seltzer’ the album title. It's especially apt for us these days, though. The songs here are more effervescent than we've ever managed to deliver, but they've still maintained a measure of that ‘Helter Skelter’ element — no matter how fizzy and refreshing the tunes are, they've always got a bit of that seamy, scuzzy, 'cult on Spahn Ranch' vibe." "Incidentally, the album title represents a secondary bonus of proselytizing to the world about seltzer, which is woefully underrecognized outside the United States. We've polled foreign friends and associates about their awareness of seltzer, and found out that most of them thought it related either to a hangover cure or to that fusty comedic "squirt in the face" gag from classic cinema. Almost none recognized the fine pleasure of sipping on a nice, refreshing seltzer water, available everywhere in bottles and cans throughout the U.S. We therefore consider this album, as a vessel of both sweet pop tunes and seltzer outreach, to be a work of undisguised philanthropy on our part." EGGS OVER EASY Eggs Over Easy, the American band that invented pub rock, influenced the careers of Nick Lowe, Huey Lewis, Loudon Wainwright III and Elvis Costello, and laid the groundwork for a grass-roots movement that would spawn UK punk, is finally getting its due with a deluxe 3xLP/2xCD set. With roots stretching back to late 1960s Berkeley, CA, the three principals in the Eggs – songwriters Jack O’Hara, Austin de Lone, and Brien Hopkins – would by early 1971 find themselves ensconced in London’s Olympic Studios, lured by Animals bassist and Jimi Hendrix producer/manager Chas Chandler, and an apparitional record deal. When said deal went bust the Eggs “did what any American band would do,” Stiff Records co-founder Dave Robinson told a journalist. “They went to the nearest bar and said, ‘Give us your worst night.’” Which is how Eggs Over Easy leapt onto the pages of pop music history. Their humble Monday night gigs at a former jazz club called the Tally Ho – pub rock ground zero - would become the hub for a network of artists, venues, and music business machers that included back-to-basics groups Ducks Deluxe, Bees Make Honey and Dr. Feelgood, DJs John Peel and Charlie Gillett, and hustlers like Jake Riviera and Mr. Robinson. For the first time ever, the entire Eggs Over Easy catalog, lovingly remastered and restored, is available as a deluxe set. Included in this collection is their debut album Good ‘n’ Cheap, produced by Link Wray and originally released on A&M Records in 1972, their rarely-heard second LP, Fear of Frying, originally (if barely) released on Lee Michaels’ Squish Records in 1980, two songs from the band’s lone single released on Buffalo Records, and the previously unreleased London ’71 sessions produced by Chandler. The 2xCD package includes a 24-page booklet, and the 3xLP set features an 8-page insert, with extremely rare photos, show flyers, early press clippings, musician and writer credits, plus the definitive story of the band by acclaimed music writer Gene Sculatti, who called Good ‘n’ Cheap a “near-masterpiece” when he reviewed it for Creem Magazine in 1972.
QUOTES: “There were hippies there, skinheads, rastafarians. I remember, most especially, a Sikh bus driver with a turban on and his bus driver uniform dancing away. It was an unbelievable scene with people hanging off the ceilings. There was this fantastic feeling that you were in on something extraordinary.” – Nick Lowe describing an early Eggs Over Easy show “Pub Rock. It’s all their fault.” – MOJO Magazine “A near-masterpiece” – Creem Magazine, 1972

Jeff Parker The New Breed Best known as a multi-instrumental member of Tortoise and a pillar of the Chicago jazz and experimental music scene, Je ff P arker has been incomparably prolific over the last 20+ years while merely producing 5 albums as a “lead artist” (just 2 since 2005, including 2016’s duo recording with Rob Mazurek on Ro gue Art). “Lead artist” is in quotes here, because though his name is seldom seen in marquees, his distinctive guitar sound has been essential to every project he’s been part of. It was in that sense that we at International Anthem came to work with Parker during the production of Makay a Mc C raven’s In The Moment , an album which ultimately showcased said essentialness (of Parker’s “side man” sound) on 9 of its 19 tracks. Over the course of the In The Moment sessions in 2013 and 2014, Parker was slowly transitioning his personal belongings from Chicago to a new home in Los Angeles. It was when finally settled that he found opportunity to re-open some home recordings and beat projects that had been dormant on his hard drive for years (early versions of some could have been heard in the late ‘00s on his My space page). Parker had long been in silent study of vinyl sampling and beat conduction, but perhaps it’s no coincidence that new residence in a city aflame with experimental R&B, jazz and electronic fusers (i.e. L.A., e.g. Brainfeeder, Leaving Records, Low End Theory) spurred him to dig back in to the practice and produce with more purpose. By early 2015 Parker had refined several compositional ideas around his samples, and enlisted local friend Paul B ry an (Aimee Mann, Meshell Ndegeocello) to engineer and play bass guitar in sessions with Chicago ex-pat saxophonist, Thelonious Monk Institute protégé Josh Jo hnso n (Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, Esperanza Spaulding) and drummer Jamire W illiams (Robert Glasper, Carlos Niño). The recordings were conducted to capture composed passages as well as free playing that used Parker’s beats and sample suites as improvisational criterion. After completing 7 songs with the band, the last of which with vocals from his daughter Ruby Parker recorded in Chicago by John M cE ntire , Parker named the project The New Breed (after a clothing store his late father Ernie owned and operated in the ‘70s) and finished the album by stitching the band tracks together with intermittent pieces of beat memories from his archive. The final presentation is a retrospective tapestry that explores Parker’s past both musically – as a potent compositional tribute to his influences (J Dilla, Thelonious Monk, Charles Stepney) held together by literal fragments of his life’s work – and patrilineally – as a collaboration with his kin held together by clippings from the family photo album. The New Breed is Jeff Parker’s most vibrant and comprehensively personal work yet, appropriately the first in 11 years with only his name in the “lead artist” column. In an era when the city kvetches that there are no good NYC bands, when half of the music scene has split for sunny California, the Myster y Lights are an anomaly. Not only did these bold young men reverse the direction optimistically migrating east against the tide from the west coast, but they also immersed themselves in the action and diversity of New York City. Organically unfolding over the nights, months and years, the Lights' sound has evolved into a fuzz-fueled, hopped-up 21st Centur y take on '60s garage pebbles, and ar tful '70s punk, that is all their own. If you've ever seen the Myster y Lights live, then you've experienced the other worldly energy and conviction they exude on stage, compelling their rabid fans to emphatically entwine themselves into an electrified mob. This album is a testament to that. Recorded at The Daptone House Of Soul by (Grammy Award winning) engineer, Wayne Gordon - shor tly after their debut single sold out - it marries the Lights' youthful, visceral energy with seasoned song-craft and musicianship far beyond their years. The Myster y Lights are living proof that vital contemporar y music, in this case real-deal rock 'n roll, can still be dreamed, constructed, and thankfully recorded in the Empire City.

The Explorers Club – Together
The Explorers Club return with their third album of harmony-laden sounds. Follows the debut “Freedom Wind”, which showcased their Beach Boys influences, and the triumphant follow-up “Grand Hotel”, an exploration of classic soft pop. “Together” is sure to be the soundtrack for Summer 2016. Jason Brewer, founder and visionary of the band, has patterned the album in the mold of post-Pet Sounds Beach Boys classics such as Friends, Sunflower and Love You, while adding his own unique touches and flourishes of inspiration with his band mates. Exquisite harmonies, tight musicianship, flowing melodies, and gorgeous vocals. Standout tracks include the modern sunshine doo-wop of “California's Calling Ya”, the bouncy pop of “Once In A While” and the contemplative “Quietly”. A broad collection of diverse songs about rage, redemption, depravity, dead cars and broken dreams. Features tracks produced by Morcheeba, Q-Burns Abstract Message and Andrew Hale. Jim called this album Hick Hop. “Mr. White has both a literary streak and a crackpot imagination... he brings shards of Southernness, including plinking banjos and bluesy slide guitars, into surreal realms where they may collide with finger cymbals or hip-hop drumbeats ... His lyrics mix the calm fatalism of old country music with the fractured causality of Surrealism, while his arrangements set the words in a backwoods filled with electronic ghosts.” -New York Times “Sounding like a deranged hillbilly hipster, (part Gram Parsons, part Jack Kerouac), White makes creepy music deluxe.” -popmatters.com “Faded church bells, muted sirens, insect noises, white noise, rickety turntable scratching, and electronic beats take “alternative” country music to places it’s never been before.” or “...at times gothic, at times bizarre, and at times, absolutely stunning.” -Stylus Magazine

The Baltic - Archipelago Street Date: June 24th, 2016
Track Listing: 1. Turquoise 2. Bloom 3. San Fransisco 4. Fortitude 5. 72 Hours About: Hailing from Denver, The Baltic are a revolutionary dream rock band characterized by their vibrant tonalities, psychedelic riffs, and euphoric harmonies. The four-piece group consists of drummer/singer Graham Epstein, guitarists Adam Dankowski and Jose Chalit, and bassist Josh Kaplan. The band started in Epstein's basement in the sixth grade, and is now opening for national acts such as Delicate Steve and Imperial Teen. The Baltic’s aesthetic is influenced by nineties shoegaze and britpop acts such as Ride and Chapterhouse, combined with a distinctive pallet inspired by frigid arctic landscapes and tropical islands. Their new album, Archipelago, derives from aspects of “dream-rock/pop” and shoegaze, lying in the blissful middle ground between the ethereal explosions found in "72 Hours," and the sun-soaked pop melodies of "San Francisco." Archipelago experiments with an eclectic array of instruments such as the mellotron and Japanese flute, flying you through an ecstatic hallucination of captivating timbres and dreamlike songwriting. The Baltic is reinventing the styles of nineties shoegaze to fit the modern day, providing an auditory experience unlike any other.

RELEASE DATE :
O
ver the course of Look Mexico’s storied 12-year career, the Tallahassee, FL outfit has achieved cult status on the shoulders of relentless touring (over 700 shows) and classic releases such as This Is Animal Music and the acclaimed follow-up EP, Gasp Asp … coincidentally the inaugural release from a then-upstart Tiny Engines. The Carolina-based label and Look Mexico have once again joined forces to unleash the band’s long-awaited-but-absolutely-worth-it third fulllength, Uniola. It’s been over four years since Look Mexico’s last effort Real Americans Spear It (Adeline Records) was released, but that time has been well-spent reflecting on life experiences - marriage, kids, careers and crafting a mature album that speaks to growing older and wiser while still capturing the unmistakable essence of the band. Uniola builds upon the magic of Look Mexico’s early catalog while adding soulful depth to its songwriting, proving that good things come to those who wait.

The Kitoto Sound Of East Africa: 1973-1976 Strut presents a definitive collection of recordings from one of Tanzania’s most revered bands of the early 1970s, Sunburst. Covering their output from 1973 to 1976, this first retrospective features their singles for the Moto Moto and TFC labels, their sole album, ‘Ave Africa’ and an unreleased radio session recorded in Tanzania in 1973. By the time Zairean guitarist Hembi Flory Kongo had formed the band in Dar Es Salaam in 1970 playing “copyright” cover versions, soul and funk had long influenced young musicians in Dar and ‘boogies’, weekly soul events, were commonplace at the city’s clubs. Despite the Tanzanian government banning soul (both music and dancing) through their conservative Ujamaa policy in 1969, Sunburst grew as a band and developed their own musical direction which they later called Kitoto Sound, reflecting the diverse backgrounds of the band members. Lyrical themes included black pride and colonial oppression – the band even played a gig for visiting civil rights heroine Angela Davis. After June 1973, Sunburst gained a national audience through a live session for the state-owned Radio Tanzania, a crucial means for domestic bands to air their work. A month later, they won a band competition in Dar Es Salaam and their popularity in Tanzania grew further. They began recording singles in Kenya, standing apart from the predominantly rumba, jazz or taarab styles sung in local languages at the time. In 1974, Sunburst met Zambian musician Rikki Ililonga from Zamrock group MusiO-Tunya and he invited them to Zambia. Meeting their later manager, car company employee Peter Bagshawe, they embarked on an ill-fated tour with Kenyan funk band Matata before working on a first full album in 1976 in Lusaka with new band members. The LP came out at the height of the Zamrock scene led by bands like Witch and Ngozi Family but Sunburst offered a more intricate sound as musicians born in six different countries tapped into a multitude of styles, languages and stories. “Our songs support freedom struggles and encourage peasants and workers to work harder,” singer James Mpungo recounted. “Our songs also criticize our people for allowing themselves to be too westernized.” After a handful of further singles for Tanzanian state label TFC, including the popular ‘Banchikicha’, the band split, frustrated by living on “bare minimum earnings” from their music. The result of three years’ painstaking work after tracking down bandleader Hembi Kongo, bassist Bashir and the band’s ex-manager Peter Bagshawe, this overdue retrospective is curated by Thomas Gesthuizen (DJ Gioumanne) of Africanhiphop. com and Dave Tinning of Santuri East Africa. The package features a full band biography alongside rare photos, press cuttings and memorabilia.
KEY POINTS: - First ever release of band’s recordings outside of Africa - Definitive collection: the band’s complete recorded output + exclusive unreleased radio session - one of the most important of Tanzania’s 1970s bands who developed their own Kitoto sound fusing soul and jazz with many traditional influences. - album and singles fully remastered for this reissue from original tapes where possible

Following 2014's exceptional Crush on the World, Lisa Prank returns with a breezy but focused collection of meticulously crafted bedroom pop gems. Adult Teen, the project's forthcoming record, is dominated by bruised romanticism, introspective longing, and a palpable sense of desire, building a sound heavily influenced by 90s pop punk and the decade’s lighthearted culture.

Robin Edwards performs all of the Lisa Prank songs live with an electric guitar and a Roland MC-505 drum machine, delivering memorable performances with ease. Thanks to that fact, Lisa Prank has become a project that's frequently celebrated among Edwards' peers, some of whom, including Bree McKenna and Emily Nokes of Tacocat, Julia Shapiro of Chastity Belt, and Andrew Sullivan and Ian Dugas of The Trashies contributed performances to the record. Lisa Prank has shared the stage with bands like Waxahatchee, Tacocat, and Pony Time. She also contributed vocals on Childbirth's Women’s Rights album for Suicide Squeeze Records. Adult Teen was recorded and mixed by Eric Randall (Tacocat), mastered by Carl Saff, with artwork by Faye Orlove.

Steady Holiday is Dre Babinski. Until now you could find her playing in bands around LA, particularly Hunter Hunted and Dusty Rhodes and the River Band (in which she played violin, keys, guitar), opening for stuff like Fitz and the Tantrums and Fun dot. She enjoyed the sidewoman life but longed for an outlet of her own, writing and recording in secret, developing a body of work about hidden desire itself. Under the Influence is her LP-as-coming-out-party, featuring Josh Adams (Jenny Lewis) and produced by Gus Seyffert (The Black Keys, Beck).

Holy Night OVERVIEW: Marc Nguyen Tan is a man outside of time. He is both an avant-garde pioneer and a modern classic. Colder, the electronic project he’s helmed since 2003, inhabits a sonic world that drives into the future as much as it gazes into the past. His is a unique sound of noir-drenched highways of propulsive electronic cold wave, krautrock and post-punk, touched by everything from the Chromatics’ bleary-eyed romanticism to the Horrors’ atmospheric groove, via the teutonic precision of NEU! and Can. Hot on the heels of Colder’s third album Many Colours released late last year and Some Lost Tapes, a Record Store Day exclusive EP, June 24th sees the release of two new Colder albums: The Rain and Goodbye, themselves lost in time. A combination of new and reworked unreleased material from Colder’s years at Trevor Jackson’s now defunct Output label, Bataille Records is proud to unleash two new parts to the Colder story: Goodbye, a swaggering groove-laden album of synthesised jagged guitars and dynamic electronica, and The Rain, a more experimental record of glacial ambience and New Wave expressionism. A testament to just how ahead of the curve Colder is, the two albums beguile and intrigue with their explorations of Gallic darkwave cool, a sound which would go on to influence everyone from LCD Soundsystem to Liars. Tan has always been a master of using his consummate understanding of music past to create music of the future. The time capsule opens, and Colder still sounds like the future. Take ‘Blackhole Speedway’ from Goodbye: a stuttering motorik beat underpins snatched guitar stabs and a pulsing bassline, all with those hushed vocals that Colder makes his own. Elsewhere, the title track (and album closer, naturally) expands on the template by employing a throbbing synth figure, and melding it to an almost-blues riff, chugging away behind Tan’s half-sung vocal. Goodbye feels more immediate and driving, with ‘Sugar’s 21st century sensual rockabilly pitching Kraftwerk in a Detroit dive bar, whereas ‘Sad Faces’ struts like a long lost circus sideshow helmed by Jim Morrison in the digital era. In marked contrast, Colder explores a more introspective sound on The Rain, which is a record of evocative, cinematic electronica. ‘Pass And Go (Demo Version)’ highlights this beautifully with it’s gentle, Lynchian sound of skittering slow motion jazz drums and icecold monotone bass, juxtaposed with a glistening Rhodes piano and subdued guitar. The Rain oozes melancholia, conjuring late night car journeys in long deserted post-apocalyptic towns. ‘Market Day’, ‘RE 501 Friday Night’ and ‘Holy Night’ evoke wonderfully intoxicating dark hues tinged with monochrome bleakness, yet feel strangely at home next to more upbeat tracks like the jerky hypnotic shuffle of ‘All Along The Way’. Other delights include ‘Mango Coconut’, a great, big, rollicking rock tune that The Black Angels might have included on their Vietnam War-infused debut Passover, if only they had written it. The two dialoguing records will be released simultaneously, seeing Colder expand on his triptych of studio albums, which culminated in 2015’s critically lauded Many Colours. Not one to slow down, he is also currently working on a series of diverse collaborations including SAVE! - a project with Craig Higgins Jr from the acclaimed acid house revivalists Paranoid London, and an untitled dancefloor oriented project with revered Danish producer Kasper Bjørke. Coxsone’s Music 2 The Sound Of Young Jamaica More Early Cuts From The Vaults Of Studio One 1959-63
24th June 2016 No shipments outside of North America
This is the second collection to bring together many of the visionary producer Clement ‘Sir Coxsone’ Dodd’s early recordings made with Jamaica’s most exciting young artists and musicians who helped define the world of reggae music over the decades following Jamaican Independence. These recordings were made when Sir Coxsone ruled the dancehalls of Kingston in the late 1950s and early 1960s with his number one Downbeat Sound System, where songs were tested out on dub plates at a dance to see a crowd’s reaction - the most popular of which were then released commercially. Featuring early material by Roland Alphonso, Don Drummond, Tommy McCook (all of whom would form The Skatalites), Toots and The Maytals, young singers such as Bob Marley and The Wailers, Delroy Wilson, Owen Gray all captured in their formative days. The music here spans a wealth of styles – Jamaican rhythm and blues, jazz, gospel, proto-ska, Rastafarian – all of which were drawn upon to create the future sounds of Jamaican reggae that Sir Coxsone and the artists featured would soon create at Studio One which opened its doors in 1963. This collection is released on heavyweight triple-vinyl plus download code and double CD with slipcase. Sleevenotes and text is by the author Noel Hawks.

Invisible 1’ it’s sometimes good to keepadmirers at a distance. For her “come-back” album, Brisa Roché follows this rule to the letter. After four albums in France, she returned to her native California — not the one with six-lane highwaysand palm trees, but the one up north, where mountain lions roam, and sequoi as tower. There, hiddenin her home-studio, she channeled song after song, inspired by tracks arriving from producers all over the world. Some sent sound hoping to re-provoke songwriting in the vein of jazz-singer. Brisa freshly arrived in France the moment the Twin Towers fell, who haunted the stages of Parisian caves with a high shadowy voice, forcing journalists to compare her to Billie Holiday. Others sent what revealed a preference for the avant-gardism of “Mystery Man” off of her first record on Blue Note, that transported fans with pop as daring as it was sweet. Still other composers sent tracks they hoped would prolong the sound they loved in her hits “Whistle”and “Call Me”, from her psych-folk period. But of course, Brisa did not revisit the past. She invented a future, a space-time exercise, creating songs across thousands of miles, across musical genres, where a voice springs as easily from a computer, an applauded stage, ora virgin forest. The album INVISIBLE 1 is titled such because anything is possible when limitations imposed by a studio setting are discarded, when judgments and timidity are veiled by distance, when collaborations multiply across the waves, when intimacy with strangers makes art.
For fans of: Cat Power, Joni Mitchell, Michael Jackson, Prince
Key selling points: Brisa Roché’s 4th album, powerful and complex vocal arrangements, a free and sensitive sound -
2016 Marks both American singer-songwriter Brisa Roché’s return to europe and annonce the release of a new album ‘INVISIBLE1’ made between California and Paris
-
Includes collaboration with Nick Zinner (yeah yeah yeahs) and productions by Black Joy (yellow productions) and Thibaut Barbillon (nouvelle vague, Jb Dunkel)
SHA-LA-DAS THOSE YEARS ARE OVER b/w OPEN MY EYES D A P - 1 0 98 The first single from Dunham Records in-house, all male, backing vocal quartet, The Sha-La-Das, conjures up the memory of a stolen first kiss - a whispered, forbidden vow of young love under the boardwalk at Coney Island. It's layered with sunny melodies that intoxicate, while the haunting undercurrent slowly pulls you in, like standing on the shoreline at dusk mid-July. A classic songwriting style , for a new generation of vinyl-heads and audio purists, pushes you through the deepest blue in the sky, into the seductive violet of night and straight through to first hopes of daybreak. A tapestry of unique voices and personalities, born to meld together; The Sha La Das have been one of the secret ingredients in the recordings of the last two Charles Bradley albums (Victim of Love, Changes). They've been blips on the radar of keen-eared music enthusiasts for some time now, both as a group and separately. One listen to this beautifully crafted new record and it'll be clear as day: The Sha La Das will not be a secret for long.

KATY GUILLEN & THE GIRLS Heavy Days
With the release of their sophomore album, Heavy Days, KATY GUILLEN & THE GIRLS have established themselves as an authentic, authoritative rock band. They pack in crowds at blues roadhouses and prominent concert venues alike, supporting major touring acts or headlining festivals and bills of their own. They’ve taken their vivacious brand of blues rock to stages across the globe—from the Montreal International Jazz Festival to Joe Bonamassa’s Keeping the Blues Alive At Sea cruise to earning a finalist spot at the 2014 International Blues Challenge—and they’ve become one of Kansas City’s most sought-after groups, routinely selling out hometown venues. Their musical identity is rooted heavily in the blues but influenced by the timeless guitar riffs of Jimi Hendrix, the visionary songwriting of Patty Griffin and the indie rock revivalist sound of Heartless Bastards. Guillen’s years as a seasoned blues guitarist—along with her education in flamenco guitar style—has informed her songwriting, augmented by the talents of bassist Claire Adams and drummer Stephanie Williams. Williams brings a signature melodic percussive voice to the group, compelled by her rock influences and experience in jazz ensembles. With Adams’ instincts as a multi-instrumentalist and composer, her impeccable bass lines and backing vocals are an ideal complement to Guillen’s searing, commanding guitar licks. With every new opportunity and locale, Katy Guillen & The Girls spread their infectious and original mix of classic American genres to eager music lovers and expand their already sizable fan base.

Kaumwald - Rapa Nui Clan Following on from 2014's 'Hantasive' LP on Opal Tapes, Kaumwald have returned with a new suite of totally bugged out improv techno and electroacoustic burn out's entitled "Rapa Nui Clan"... They're a hard act to define, unifying the tabletop thrift attack of AMM or early Wolf Eyes against bold modular driven beats rich with crust. The albums title and tracks speak toward a sense of new discovery, voyaging and exploring. The duo's machines interlace this time with more pronounced vocals often rendered in absurd pitches or drawn out into oblivious texture. Tracks like 'Leil' and 'Minorque' request you to strap in as almost painful sound is slapped down over chunky 4/4. Opener 'Ortolan' and closer 'Albert Le Thouet' are lighter and more playful but overall it's a heavier and much denser affair than previous outings and all the better for it. As with any voyage there is a wealth of informa tion to process, this is the sound of information frying in the pan as the ship readjusts it's course.
Personable - Oyster
The master jammer returns! Opal are so proud to release this set of four beautiful, sun filled pieces of pure electronic music. Ged Gengras' Personable project is the boiled down syrup of many years spent learning his craft within synthesis. Captured directly from live home studio recording, each track lives and breathes in it's own space, 'Gambetti' serves a light structure of rattling snares and resonant bass boops dressed up with gorgeous, almost gothic hanging notes. 'Window' is a funked slice of Ged at his best, referencing grime/garage structure but extended out into am 11+ minute epic that conjures buccolic idyll, like funky sunshine. B-side opener 'Oyster' flips the vibe inward into a more paranoid number, similarly long form and rolling but with all melody turning in on itself and riffs decaying away into thin whispers. To close; the stunning 'Cormorant' forms itself from a bed of padded out bliss. Reminiscent of Oval or Pinkcourtesyphone, the track haunts with a breathy sadness which pulses forwards into squash court squeaks and deep forward facing kick drums. Every time I listen to Personable I'm hearing someone who approaches their instruments as a player, no concepts or grand ideas, just playing a synthesiser and doing it so well.

www.infrequentseams.com LABEL: Infrequent Seams Records RELEASE DATE: 06/24/2016 CAT#: IS1008 FORMAT: CD in Digipak, Download SLP: $13.99 Infrequent Seams is a new label presenting contemporary chamber music, experimental noise, & improvisation
Experimental composer Devin Maxwell, former drummer and producer for singer/songwriter Anni Rossi, releases his first album of original acoustic and electronic compositions performed by a variety of world-class ensembles and musicians. The works on this album were composed after Maxwell left Williamsburg, Brooklyn for Wanship, Utah and represent an evolution of, or sometimes and irreverent take on, musical ideas and concepts introduced or explored by a wide range of composers from John Cage to Milton Babbitt and James Tenney to Frank Zappa with obscured hints of Notorious B.I.G. and Soundgarden. Maxwell's compositions also draw heavily on his eclectic and pragmatic background as a performer, collaborator, and conductor and will resonate with fans of music looking for new perspective on sound as well as aficionados of contemporary classical music. www.goodchildmusic.com

Rob Mazurek & Emmett Kelly Alien Flower Sutra Composed and arranged by Rob Mazurek, Alien Flower Sutra is the apogee of a collaborative conceptual process that bloomed over multiple years, voices and instrumentations. After planting seeds at home with pen, piano and cornet in hand, Mazurek took to various performance spaces in Chicago and São Paulo across 2013 and 2014 to open his compositions to interpretation by a potent pool of creative musicians. Among them was guitarist Emmett Kelly (The Cairo Gang, Joshua Abrams Natural Information Society), whose interchanges with Mazurek led the two to conversations about an accompanying storyline for the music. Responding to post-apocalyptic and science-fictional imageries long central to Mazurek’s aesthetic (as themed by his Exploding Star Orchestra, Pulsar Quartet, and Black Cube SP), Kelly took to writing lyrics within the framework of the existing melodies. The consummate story colors a vivid first-person narrative through the perception of a cybernetic organism struggling to reconcile the human buried inside their computer-regulated psyche. In the exposition, on “Blackout,” the protagonist finds enlightenment and pleasure in a power outage that temporarily suspends their vision. And by the culmination, on “We Are One,” they find equal expression through both sides of their organic-electronic persona: “a good companion in the steel / understands me like no other / and feels nothing I cannot feel / in the bolt of lightning, we are one.” Meditating on not-too-futuristic concepts common to the collective conscience of our time, the final script finds optimism over paranoia in the advancing state of human evolution. Though part of Mazurek’s early vision was to develop this work into a full-scale opera, he found inspiration in the intimate voice/guitar recordings Kelly made remotely, and chose instead to experiment with those minimal tracks alongside recordings from Sâo Paulo’s El Rocha Studios he’d been maturating in his modular synthesizers. Alien Flower Sutra as finalized for this release is an animate palette of poetry and electronic treatments conducted by Mazurek and articulated by the candor of Kelly’s aching narratives.
