Forever a wildcat and wild card, Los Angeles’ bassist/songwriter/vocalist Stephen Bruner, aka Thundercat, is impossible to tame artistically. A true master of his craft, he can be found playing bass with Flying Lotus, Erykah Badu and Suicidal Tendencies, in the same breath as performing live with the likes of Stanley Clarke, Snoop Dogg or the Red Hot Chili Peppers. His 2011 solo debut (‘The Golden Age of Apocalypse,’ co-produced by Flying Lotus) created an equally genre-blurring enigma of indie rock and jazz, with a touch of electronica. On his second album, ‘Apocalypse,’ Thundercat pairs up with executive producer Flying Lotus to pull the veil back and reveal the simple truths of the cycle of life, for all its beauty and destruction. An album about loss and rebuilding, trying to gain something back, and capturing that moment of clarity where one finally finds feet back on the ground again. Bringing a fusion of pop, soul, electronica, prog rock and funk into an unexplored dimension, the album slowly descends and tunnels to the core of what it takes to grasp peace, at a time that it seems most far. From the deep, rumbling entrance of ‘Tenfold,’ each of the 12 tracks coalesce with Thundercat’s signature bass, his riffs and basslines gliding skyhigh to meet Fly Lo’s astral touch. Bruner's vocals and harmonies also soar with open honesty, rising above heartbreak with uplifting odes to love and companionship (‘Tron Song’) and wise mantras to live by (‘Special Stage’). The album plays as a comedy and tragedy at the same time, delicately addressing tracks like ‘We’ll Die’ while bringing the all-out cosmic funk of the anthemic ‘Oh Sheit, it’s X.‘ As heavy as the lyrical weight may be, the divine musicality of Flying Lotus, and Thundercat’s instrumental collaborations, brings light. Navigating dense rhythms and intense harmonic progressions, the LP pushes through the hypnotic strands of ‘The Life Aquatic,’ the analogue explorations of ‘Lotus & The Jondy’ (recorded in Adrian Younge’s studio with drummer Thomas Pridgen), and Thundercat and Lotus’ prog rock jam ‘Seven,’ a spontaneous improv recording that organically materialized in less than an hour. It’s no wonder the kindred pair often refer to their freeform sessions as “going to space.” Continually pushing tracks to their furthest point, they take the listener to another place completely - somewhere beyond time, a place that transcends this realm. As the aformentioned track ‘Seven’ (named for its challenging time signature) asks, “Can you hear the sounds of infinity?” Thundercat explains ‘Apocalypse’: “I feel like the album’s a story, more than anything. The music’s almost like a photobook for me. It takes me back to certain things I’ll never forget. I love working with Lotus because he was able to give it a different perspective and mold, to where people can actually see it for what it is.”

BRAND NEW ALBUM JULY 9, 2013 ASHMONT RECORDS

credits

Do You Love the Sun is the first new Scud Mountain Boys album since Sub Pop released the critically-acclaimed Massachusetts in 1996. After being out of contact for many years, original Scud Mountain Boys band members Joe Pernice (vocals, acoustic and electric guitars), Stephen Desaulniers (vocals, acoustic guitar, and bass), and Bruce Tull (electric guitar, lap steel, pedal steel) returned to the scene in late 2011, playing an almostimpromptu reunion in Cambridge, Mass. Soon after, the band had announced more shows and will reissue The Early Year via One Little Indian on July 8, a compilation of their first two albums Pine Box and Dance the Night Away. Do You Love the Sun, released on July 9, fulfills the promise of a full-fledged recorded comeback. Their latest offering features Joe Pernice's inimitable marriage of

exquisitely graceful vocals and a resigned tone that the NME (in a 9 out of 10 Massachusetts review) once described as “the golden voice of damaged, regret oozing from every word like wounded honey… rendering glorious the utter inevitability of failure.” Starting out simply as the Scuds in western Massachusetts’ Pioneer Valley in 1991, the group initially cultivated a local following playing loud rock ‘n’ roll. But after those shows, three members— Joe Stephen and Bruce Tull —would retreat to Bruce’s kitchen to unwind, breaking out old country favorites, playing the songs they thought too quiet and too slow for live performances. The band found that these were the songs they really lived to play, so, adding "mountain boys" to their name, the rechristened Scud Mountain Boys played their first public show in 1993. Though the band was initially lumped

in with the alt-country scene helmed by Son Volt, Wilco, and the hordes of other disciples of Hank Williams, the Scud Mountain Boys have always taken their inspiration as much from hooky ’70s AM pop as from the dirty country road of Johnny Cash. For the legions of Scud Mountain Boys that have been holding out hope for a follow-up offering to the brilliant Massachusetts, Do You Love the Sun is a welcome ten track return from a band that has been away for too long.

BLADES OF GRASS

Formed by Thomas Storz (bass, percussion), Justin Toland (vocals, guitar, percussion), and Andrew Denham (drums, percussion), and originally from Mississippi, the power trio Dirty Streets now calls Memphis home. That’s where they recorded their new album “Blades Of Grass”, at the legendary Ardent studio, under the guidance of sound engineer Adam Hill. “Blades Of Grass” is an old school rock n’roll record with nods to the sounds of Humble Pie, Jeff Beck Group and others. It’s heavy music bathed in blues, folk and psychedelia, with chops to spare and a working class point of view. The band already has two independent releases under their belt, including an album with Doug Easley, and has toured extensively in the southeast, with a couple of east coast runs, and a 8 week U.S. tour with Radio Moscow.

Congo Natty is one man, a family, a movement. Mikail Tafari aka Rebel MC stands at the core, but as “Jungle Revolution” shows, he’s the lense that brings the whole into focus. Ten tracks long, “Jungle Revolution” clearly lays out the way in which Tafari sees Jungle as a re-boot of roots reggae for a new century. Full of blood and fire, the sternum-buzz of sub-bass, rapid fire drum breaks, sweet hooks, righteous anger and professions of love, it’s the kind of passionate, committed, raw and spiritual, beautiful record that doesn’t come along that often. “The message of reggae is Ras Tafari and Ras Tafari is love,” he explains. “They sang about love but they was also prophesying and talking about the system, talking about things that were going on in the world. I saw Jungle as being that same music, where we were going to spread a message.” That message is spread by a diverse cast of collaborators. The album was mixed with On-U legend Adrian Sherwood and Skip McDonald (whose career goes back as far as the Sugarhill Band) plays guitar and, on the deep dub of “Revolution,” melodica. Production smarts are martialled from Benny Page (on the straight up ragga-jungle of “UK Allstars”),Vital Elements (the 150bpm anthem “Jah Warriors” and “Jungle Is I and I”), Serial Killaz (the pure roots bounce and rinse out of “Get Ready”) and Boyson & Crooks (creeping technoid paranoia on “London Dungeons”).Vocalists, meanwhile, run a huge range. There’s a who’s who of UK soundsystem culture on “UK Allstars.” True Congo Natty family like Nanci & Phoebe (check out Phoebe “Iron Dread” Hibbert’s verse on “Microchip” and Nanci Correia’s contributions throughout the record) and La La & The Boo Yaa (“Jungle Souljah”) fill the album with sweet hooks and total commitment. Last, there are artists perhaps best known for their work with others, but drawing new sustenance from Congo Natty’s Rasta beliefs and political views. Lady Chann offers a scintillating contribution on “Jungle Is I and I” and Buggsy, best known for his work with Joker, makes a telling intervention. That this all holds together into a coherent whole that nods back to the legacy of roots reggae and classic jungle without being in thrall to either is down to the clear-eyed vision of the pioneer behind it. That he could make a record so vital, so alive with love and anger and pure joy, shows that Congo Natty the man is more than just a legend. He’s a revolutionary. And that revolution is happening now.

BIG DADA / TECHNICOLOUR NEW RELEASES FOR JULY 9TH Congo Natty - Jah Warriors The warm-up for the first full artist album by Mikail Tafari aka Congo Natty aka Rebel MC in twenty years – the brimstone-heavy “Jungle Revolution” – continues with the first full single taken from the record. Engaging with the new trend for 150bpm jungle, “Jah Warriors” twists the form into a righteous roots reggae tune that rolls out in its second half with all the power and propulsive force you’d expect from a Jungle legend. Featuring the sweet tones of Nanci Correia, quality reggae stylings from YT and hype man duties from Tafari’s teenage son Yosief, it’s a superb marriage of junglistic style and fearsome bass which sounds both timeless and utterly contemporary. The first remix comes from Joker, originally introduced to Tafari by Buggsy, who has worked with both men. He keeps the reggae feel of the original (how could you get rid of it?!) but gives the whole thing an irresistible, stoned, purple slide. Machinedrum is next up. The sometime Azealia Banks producer and new Ninja Tune signee is a massive jungle fan and opts to pay respect to the tradition with a very clever re-work of “UK Allstars.” The junglists are fully represented, finally, by mixes from Benny Page and Serial Killerz, both of whom take the tempo back up to more familiar jungle territory, pile on gigantic b-lines and let the party really start. Widely acknowledged as “a fearless social commentator and righteous Rastaman… a pioneer” (The Wire), Congo Natty is not a man to sit back and rest on his laurels or succumb to the temptations of the heritage circuit. Jungle is the first truly homegrown British bass music and was never co-opted or commercialized by the mainstream. Now one of its true leaders and heroes returns with the album the form has perhaps always needed. The warrior has come.

BRTSH KNIGHTS - If I Was To / Hazed South London production collective, BRTSH KNIGHTS, throw down the gauntlet with their first official release, the double A-side single of If I Was To and Hazed. This debut offering fuses classic house and garage with high-grade production. If I Was To deploys bouncing synths and the incredibly addictive "reciprocate" vocal hook whilst flipside Hazed is a dark, smokey slice of R&B with reverberating snares and super sweet vocals. Dwellers of murky south London backstreets, BRTSH KNIGHTS are proudly nostalgic for a time when music had soul, style and swing, a time of lavish living and unrestrained lovemaking, a time of now-decrepit splendour and extravagance, a faded kingdom. Their songs of lust and longing pass through the crackling filter of pirate radio stations, rebounding off the decaying walls of tower blocks, becoming entwined with wails of nearby sirens, leaving behind a trail of exuberant colour. If I Was To / Hazed is due for release on 10th June via Technicolour Records and will also feature forthcoming remixes from EL-B and Mono/Poly.

CO R N E L L C A M P B E L L MEE TS SOOTHSAYE RS NOTHING CAN STOP US

Strut presents the first new instalment in its acclaimed Inspiration Information studio collaboration series for over two years in May 2013 with a superb new soundclash featuring sweet-voiced Jamaican legend Cornell Campbell and the excellent London-based reggae and Afro-dub collective, Soothsayers, led by Robin Hopcraft and Idris Rahman. The pairing first took shape through a chance meeting between Hopcraft and legendary producer Bunny Lee in a car park in Kingston, Jamaica early in 2011. Following a call to Campbell, a session was promptly arranged at Lee’s recording studio in West Kingston and, within days, the collaboration produced the sweet ‘I’ll Never Leave’, a homage to Campbell’s island home country in Parish of St. Elizabeth. The dub version of the track was released alongside Soothsayers’ ‘We’re Not Leaving’ in August 2011 and the Cornell Campbell version followed on a 45 on Soothsayers’ own Red Earth label a month later. Now signed to Strut, the collaboration has flourished into a full album, a conscious and roots-based set with Cornell Campbell’s iconic, sweet vocals underpinned by deep, dubby rhythm section work and some fresh, intricate arrangements. Hopcraft adds, “We gave Cornell recordings of some ideas we had been working on. He took them away and developed some lyrics. Idris and I also wrote a few complete songs that Cornell loved and he blessed them with his vocals.” “I did this album straight from the heart,” concludes Cornell. “It’s a compilation of different varieties and it really interests me. You find that, instead of doing one regular thing, it goes from trend to trend, it shows the versatility in you, the type of person that you are. I wrote bold and believe in a-self.” Within the tracklist, Soothsayers bring their trademark fusion of influences to the table and move Cornell’s sound into bold new directions, adding rich harmonies and intricate horn lines throughout. There’s the striding title track ‘Nothing Can Stop Us’ alongside the hard-hitting steppers-meets-Afro blast ‘We Want To Be Free’; defiant roots anthem ‘Ode To Joy (Babylon Can’t Control I)’ gives way to simmering downtempo reggae soul gem, ‘There’s A Fire’. The collective also revisits Cornell’s poignant 1970s sufferer’s classic ‘Jah Jah Me No Born Yah’ augmented by the addition of horns and Hammond organ, accentuating the Moorish melodies of the original. The album carries forward the considerable legacy of Campbell’s recordings over a full half century, from his early work with “Coxsone” Dodd at Studio One to ‘70s and ‘80s classics with Joe Gibbs, Bunny “Striker” Lee, King Tubby, Winston “Niney” Observer and more. Hits like ‘Queen Of The Minstrel’, ‘The Gorgon’ and ‘Dread In A Greenwich Farm’ have cemented his standing as a true Jamaican great. For Soothsayers, the album is the culmination of ten years leading the London live scene. Comprising musicians that have played with many top artists including Mulatu Astatke, Jerry Dammers’ Spatial A.K.A. Arkestra and Hugh Masekela, the band are known for their excellent collaborations with Johnny Clarke, Maxi Jazz (Faithless) and more and formed the nucleus of the band that backed the London leg of the ‘Fela!’ musical during 2011. The band consolidated their reputation with the self-released album ‘Human Nature’ during 2012. As The Independent On Sunday testified, “The grooves are solid, the playing immaculate and the threepart vocal harmonies the icing on the cake.”

JULY 9TH ROCK CANDY REISSUES As usual all are fully remastered and the extensive booklets feature rare photos, detailed notes and interviews with the key players. All $20.99 each and come in jewel cases. DERRINGER—SWEET EVIL CANDY156 5055300357953 Derringer quickly established themselves as contenders with a solid debut album, but it was their second record, the wonderfully titled ‘Sweet Evil’, that really put the cat amongst the pigeons. Produced by Jack Douglas and originally issued in 1977, the album is a veritable treasure trove of deeply moving heavy rock, with epically constructed tracks such as ‘Driving Sideways’, ‘Sittin’ By The Pool’, ‘One Eyed Jack’ and the title track itself – all wide angle shots at the big time and all injected with breathlessly executed guitar solos and some of the best riffs on record. Track listing: Don’t Stop Loving Me; Sittin’ By The Pool; Keep On Makin’ Love; One Eyed Jack; Let’s Make It; Sweet Evil; Drivin’ Sideways; I Didn’t Ask To Be Born

REO SPEEDWAGON—YOU CAN TUNA FISH CANDY176 5055300358424 Released in 1978 this was the band’s seventh studio album and was their first to boast a slightly more polished sound. The songs too were tighter and more precise and the album contained a number of tracks that would later go on to define REO’s clean cut but aggressive style such as ‘Roll With The Changes’, and ‘Say You Love Me Or Say Goodnight’. Part of this new found blossoming of creativity was due to the innate combustibility of the relationship between vocalist Kevin Cronin and guitarist Gary Richrath. Track listing: Roll With The Changes; Time For Me To Fly; Runnin’ Blind; Blazin’ Your Own Trail Again; Sing To Me; Lucky For You; Do You Know Where Your Woman Is Tonight?; The Unidentified Flying Tuna Trot; Say You

REO SPEEDWAGON—NINE LIVES

CANDY177 5055300358431

Naming their album ‘Nine Lives’ was a tribute to the fact that they had managed to record nine albums for EPIC records, a truly amazing feat bearing in mind that they had yet to secure a hit single. This time around the sound was more forthright, with Richrath and Cronin really hitting their stride.. Although ‘Nine Lives’, originally issued in 1979 and produced by the band and Kevin Beamish, didn’t achieve massive sales it did reposition the band as vital contenders, something that came to fruition on the following album ‘Hi-Fidelity’. Track listing: Heavy On Your Love; Drop It (An Old Disguise); Only The Strong Survive; Easy Money; Rock & Roll Music; Take Me; I Need You Tonight; Meet Me On The Mountain; Back On The Road Again

21 GUNS– SALUTE CANDY186 5055300358455 After the demise of Thin Lizzy, guitarist Scott Gorham cooled his engines and spent some time planning for the future, which eventually led to the formation of 21 Guns, a band fit for purpose, boasting both precision and power.Joining Scott in this new venture was an all American lineup, consisting of co-writer, bassist and keyboard player Leif Johansen (Phenomena), drummer Mike Sturgis (Asia) and vocalist Thomas La Verdi, who had previously fronted cult AOR unit A440. RANDY HANSEN—RANDY HANSEN CANDY187 5055300358448 Catching the ear of Capitol Records, Hanson was signed and given free rein on his debut album, a record that deliberately steered clear of obvious Hendrix comparisons but showcased a solid grasp of intelligent song writing and an avalanche of guitar pyrotechnics. Originally issued in 1980, the album is fluid and fast with melody and muscle to the fore yet encouraging cool freeform jamming in tracks such as ‘Champagne And Cocaine’, ‘Time Won’t Stop’ and Millionaire’. Track listing: Champagne And Cocaine; Watch What You Say; Time Won’t Stop; I Want To Take You Higher; Millionaire; Dancin’ With Me; Don’t Pretend

COHO LIPS CIS1060: COHO LIPS - SELF TITLED One of the most exciting ways to take the power away from naysayers is to appropriate one of their symbols, subvert it, and use it against them. So it is that when Arne Van Petegem, the Belgian producer who makes records under the name Styrofoam, decided to make his version of a disco record with vocalist Chantal Acda, he chose a name that had an acid bite to it.

Distribution Inquiries:

Coho Lips was the name of the followers of a Chicago-based shock jock who created the infamous "Disco Demolition Night" that took place at Comiskey Park in 1979. Attendees gained admission by bringing in a disco record that was then blown up in center field. Riots ensued, bonfires were set, and disco began its hasty decline from the charts.

Lest you think that this new EP by Van Petegem and Acda is a horn-drenched, diva fueled kitsch fest, keep in mind that the chief inspiration behind this project was the late

cellist/composer/producer Arthur Russell. "The production that he did on those records," says Van Petegem, "it's so catchy and dance-y and also totally off-kilter and weird. That's what we set out to do: some sort of weird disco record." The six tracks on Coho Lips' debut EP are dance music viewed through his singular glitchy prism. Listen to how the drums on "Broken, Every Record" always feel like they're lagging behind but manage to keep hitting on the one. Or the clamoring cymbal hits that ride underneath the sauntering beat of "Sun, Water." Or you could try to keep up with every little blip and glisten spread across the epic closing track "Polynoise Cotonou," but you'd probably just end up getting wrapped up in the beat. Aiding Van Petegem's vision every step of the way are the delicate, almost haunted vocals of Acda. It may seem a change of pace from the quiet folk she creates under the name Sleepingdog, but according to the vocalist, she has a long history with dance music.

and to find the perfect melody to complement her musical partner's warped musical vision. Often that came down to one or two lines, but Van Petegem would take those elements, stretch and manipulate them, and turn them into new instruments for him to wend into these dense productions. "I think we both felt that what was most important was to make it sound special to us," Van Petegem says. "We both listen to a lot of different music, but the goal for us is to produce our favorite record that we don't have yet. It touches on everything we've done before and all that music that we love. It's all of that rolled into one."

QUIREBOYS - BEAUTIFUL CURSE OFF YER ROCKA OYR004 DIGIPACK CD 5055664100035 $17.99

It’s hard to believe that the Quireboys have been doing their gypsy- styled rock’n’roll for 29 years now This, their seventh studio album, may have taken a few years in the making, but this production from a new generation of Quireboys has taken all their old school rock’n’roll values and evolved it into this new modern sound, which can only be described as stunning. With all the artwork themed around Dia de los Muertos, the albums 12 tracks tackle every style The Quireboys have ever deployed plus some new twists, that should guarantee some satisfaction to the horde of fans that have been starved for the last few years. THEE SPIVS - THE CROWDS & THE SOUNDS DAMAGED GOODS DAMGOOD416CD DAMGOOD416LP JEWEL CD STANDARD LP CD: 5020422041622 LP: 5020422041615 CD: $20.99 LP : $24.99

Thee Spivs are back with their third album in as many years and they’ve honed their canny blend of trad punk, garage punk, post punk, new wave and pub rock to create a magnificently varied album. The new album is a natural progression from their critically acclaimed debut ‘Taped Up’ and last year’s ‘Black and White Memories’ . ‘The Crowds and The Sounds’ is instantly more melodic and you can see additional influences from the very British qualities of The Kinks. The songs are slowed down and slightly longer in length, with a lot more thought and work in to each one than the furiously fast, punchy numbers from their early records.
