ELENI MANDELL DARK LIGHTS UP

NATIONAL RELEASE DATE: 7/24/15 It all started with a visit to the Country Music Hall of Fame, where an innocent afternoon wandering the exhibits and learning about her musical heroes, like Hank Williams, George Jones, Buck Owens, and Tammy Wynette, led acclaimed LA singer and songwriter Eleni Mandell on an unexpected journey of profound musical and personal self-discovery culminating in Dark Lights Up, her tenth and most captivating album yet. “It was a profound experience for me,” says Mandell. “Seeing all their lyrics and guitars on display made me reflect on just how deeply I’d been influenced by classic country.” Co-producing the new album herself with longtime friend and collaborator Sheldon Gomberg in his Silver Lake studio, Mandell distilled her songs down to their purest cores, assembling all of the musicians together in a single room with only acoustic instruments to cut the record live in just four days. The result is an utterly charming, beguiling album, drawing on elements of folk, jazz, and standards with an infectious charisma, as Mandell’s voice melts over the stripped-down arrangements to create a lush, sensuous intimacy.

ROCK/POP

Export: US only

First solo album in 33 years for legendary Rolling Stones bass player ‘Back To Basics’ does exactly what it says on the tin. It is unashamedly stripped back. The snappy lyrics are refreshingly audible and the instrumentation is clean, subtle and accomplished. Bill Wyman’s first solo album in 33 years wears its influences on its sleeve – Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen, JJ Cale – and there's more than a passing nod to Bill's own English background. It is that rare thing, a meld of styles and genres that actually work together - uplifting in a jaunty, dancey way and pensive in a bluesy, narrative way. As might be expected from one of the world's best known bass players ‘Back To Basics’ drives along with a rhythmic muscularity, and then slows the pace for more autobiographical lyric and melody. It is an album that warrants repeated play. It is also an album that's long overdue… Bill Wyman's last solo UK album, Bill Wyman, was released in 1982. ‘Back To Basics’ comprises only his fourth UK solo release. But Bill has not been idle of course. 31 years in the Rolling Stones, author of seven learned books, globally exhibited photographer, metal detecting expert with his own brand of metal detector, producer, composer for film and TV and founder of the very successful Rhythm Kings who release CDs and tour regularly - he has had a pretty full calendar. It was only when archiving old demos last year he realised he had around 60 songs he'd never released. He chose three songs that needed reworking and did just that. He put them together with a bunch of brand new songs and went into his studio to record them. The CD comprises 12 tracks in total, eight of which are new songs. Musicians joining Bill in the studio include long-time collaborator/guitarist Terry Taylor, Guy Fletcher (Mark Knopfler), Graham Broad and Robbie McIntosh while co-production credit goes to Andy Wright (Jeff Beck, Eurythmics, Simply Red). On Bill Wyman's ‘Back To Basics’ you get music that's the real deal...and you're all the better for it. Jessy Lanza meets the Teklife crew on this sultry EP, with DJ Spinn and Taso's first-released RnB track, and a Teklife footwork remix with assistance from the late DJ Rashad. The main mix is a dejected confessional slow jam with Jessy's plaintive vocal sitting in the middle of spiralling drums and teardrop-like chords, a gentle guitar refrain dropping in at the end like a comforting hand on the shoulder. Following an instrumental version, the Teklife mix doubles the tempo, switching the gentleness to deliver an interpretation that touches on tense anger, with the sweeping chords the track is built on snapping into shivering shapes, as strings simmer in the background, building the tension. Also included is Bambounou's remix of 'Fuck Diamond', a track on Jessy's ‘Pull My Hair Back’ debut album, which appears here on vinyl for the first time after an initial CD-only release last year on the ‘Hyperdub 10.4’ compilation). Bambounou transforms it into a rough drum machine workout, leaving sparse elements of the original in place - a splash of vocal and a held chord - building a dynamic trance that slips and slides in and out of different patterns.

The ‘6613’ EP from DJ Rashad's vaults will be released just over a year after his untimely passing, with all the proceeds going to his family. Some of these songs will be familiar to anyone who saw Rashad DJ. The first are two really upbeat, rolling juke tracks; ‘CCP2’ has breezy worldless vocals chopped and diced over a rolling claps and kicks, and 'Cause I Know U Feel', with Gant-Man, chops a longing vocal refrain into a delirious frenzy of unexpected shapes, over pounding kicks and toms as a warm synth swells up. The vocals recede towards the end leaving just a synth glow. 'Ya Hot', with Taso, chops and changes rhythms, dipping into half speed trap, to rolling 4/4 and into more offbeat patterns, while a hectic, bleeping melody bangs out in contrast, almost as if its tracing the pattern of dancing feet. 'Do Not Fuck' is a paranoid 'footwork as a virtual panic attack' track, drawing fxs through a tunnel of accelerated bleeps, the only constant being a deadly serious guitar breakdown, a deep bass tone and the warning words of the title. The energy of DJ Rashad will remain strong through his music.

Soul Jazz Records Presents

DISCO 2

A Further Fine Selection of Independent Disco, Modern Soul and Boogie 1976-‐80 Street Date: 24th July 2015

No shipments outside of North America

This is a second selection of independent disco records featuring rare and classic tracks originally released in the USA between the halcyon years of 1977 and 1985. This release features only the finest disco, modern soul and boogie and is compiled by Disco Patrick who last year put together for Soul Jazz Records the mighty ‘Disco – An Encyclopedic Guide to the Cover Art of Disco Records’ 400+ page deluxe book, as well as the first installment of ‘Disco – A Fine Selection of Independent Disco, Modern Soul and Boogie.’

Tracklist CD1: 1. Stevo -‐ Pay The Price (4:24) 2. High Frequency -‐ Summertime (6:32) 3. Dunn Pearson Jr. -‐ Groove On Down (8:20) 4. Mad Dog Fire Department -‐ Cosmic Funk (6:20) 5. Needa -‐ Rock-‐A-‐Freak (4:57) 6. Cream De Coco -‐ Disco Strut (7:55) 7. Anita Maldonado -‐ What Can I Do To Make You Dance (16:47) 8. The Shades Of Love -‐ Come Inside (7:51) 9. Skip Jackson & The Natural Experience -‐ Micro Wave Boogie (8:27)

This album is released as a double CD, as well as two separate volumes of double vinyl (plus free download codes) and a worldwide digital release. This album features rare, classic and in-‐demand tracks from the mighty vaults of labels such as New York’s Salsoul and Miami’s TK Records – which during the main disco era became the main competitors to the major established record industry – through to killer virtually unknown tracks released on tiny bespoke one-‐off labels, now impossible to find either in the history books or record shops of the world. Before its mainstream consumption in the late 1970s, Disco first emerged from independent record companies run by lovers of this new sound and on which this album is focused: Patrick Adams and Peter Brown, the powerhouse musical partnership based up in Harlem, New York; Henry Stone at TK, a man with a 30-‐year old career distributing black music; or the Cayre brothers at Salsoul, linking Latin roots with the deep, soulful music emerging from Philadelphia and New York.

In fact, as we can see on this album, Harlem was to prove a fertile ground of nascent independent disco with numerous young producers, alongside the leaders of the pack Patrick Adams and Peter Brown, hustling to release one-‐off or a couple of singles on their own independent labels. All the music on this album has been sonically and digitally remastered with love and is presented complete with sleevenotes, original label artwork and full-‐length extended disco editions.

CD2: 1. Jahneen -‐ Everybody's Dancin' (7:17) 2. Montego Joe -‐ Freestyle (5:16) 3. Timmy Thomas -‐ Africano (4:37) 4. Paper Doll -‐ Get Down Boy (7:34) 5. Jazz -‐ I Feel Like Love (TBA) 6. Paco and Flaco and Coco -‐ He's Here (6:17) 7. Ripple -‐ Victorious (4:29) 8. Universal Love -‐ Moon Ride (7:23) 9. Panache -‐ Jam On (6:17) 10. Otis Brown's Grade A -‐ Strut On (13:11)

THE FLESHTONES I SURRENDER! 7”

RELEASE DATE (7 INCH/DIGITAL): 7/24/15 Let’s consider this a preview, or perhaps a warning of what the Fleshtones have in store for fans a nd foes, alike. And it’s just like The Fleshtones to revive the concept of the ‘Double A-side 45’ (or is it double B-side?). We’ll let you decide. The Fleshtones reach back to their horn- section-driven sound of the ‘80s for their version of Bonnie St. Claire & The Gloria Unit’s monumental ‘I Surrender’. ‘Dominique Laboubee’ is dedicated to the late lead singer of the seminal French rock & roll band The Dogs. Dominique’s elegance a nd passion for rock & roll shall be missed forever. WE do not sing in French, just as Dominique would have wanted it to be. The Dogs lead guitarist Tony Truant joins us with some ‘leads’ and his distinctive vocal style. There will be more because that’s The Fleshtones e ver evolving to paradoxically remain the same. The Fleshtones have stayed remarkably true to their roots. A ll of them. Taking part in the punk rock revolution of the mid 7 0’s at CBGB and Max’s Kansas City, proving that you could be revolutionary and still love to do The Jerk. If not forever young t hen forever juvenile, because as Iggy Pop demands to know about any music, “Is It Juvenile?” It is. and much more. —Peter Zaremba - Brooklyn, 2015

“Iconic garage rockers the Fleshtones remain as energetic as ever.”—RollingStone “Perennial garage rockers the Fleshtones don’t care to slow down.”—Spin “you can feel pretty confident that you’re about to be treated to a solid dose of no-frills, no-nonsense, guitar-based rock ’n’ roll.”—PopMatters HIGHLIGHTS: Features a cover of “I Surrender” by Bonnie St. Claire & The Gloria Unit Special Guest Tony Truant - Lead guitar on “Dominique Laboubee” US and European Tour Dates Spring 2015 A Side: I Surrender ! earthly Earthly is a recently re-monikered freeform electronics duo comprised of Carrboro, North Carolinans (and ex-university roommates) Edaan Brook and Brint Hansen. Their debut, Days, spans shades of Creature Comforts-era Black Dice, squiggly 1080p tapes, degraded vaporwave, and hyper-color video game soundtracks, and is well suited as the first vinyl offering by adventurous Alabama cassette/digital imprint Noumenal Loom. Brook and Hansen's years of friendship translate into a colorful chemistry of pitch-shifted voices, wobbly rhythms, and iridescent textures, in a constant state of flux.

The “Canada In Space” EP is an imagining of the dreams, reveries, phantasms, hallucinations, psycho-spiritual projections, naïve mythologies, actions, visions and experiences of an abandoned crew before, during and after it’s permanent journey to Mars; the compression of time; dispersion, fragmentation of states and generations in space; ultimate detachment & wormholes.” Featuring his friends Michael Cera, Laura Crapo and Farley Miller he will be touring the UK and EU in June/July playing songs from his new EP Canada in Space along with songs from throughout his career. GENRE : ROCK FILE UNDER: “E” Eleventh Dream Day RELEASE DATE : July 24, 2015

NO EXPORT TO EUROPE, CANADA, AUSTRALIA

EXPORTABLE TO JAPAN Since first hitting the road in a battered Econoline van in the 1980s, Eleventh Dream Day continues to build on their history by moving forward musically, while never forgetting what inspired them. On Works For Tomorrow, core band members Rick Rizzo, Janet Beveridge Bean, Mark Greenberg, and Douglas McCombs are joined by James Elkington (Tweedy, Steve Gunn), marking the first time the band has recorded with a second guitarist since 1994. Elkington’s addition has unleashed the band’s strengths. The ferocious and visceral interplay between Rizzo and Elkington charge the band with a joyous exuberance that sweeps the listener in for the 43 minutes of Works For Tomorrow. The album also features performances by long time friend Martin Wenk (Calexico) and Chicago stalwart Rich Parenti on horns. Eleventh Dream Day is known for their raw, inexhaustible live performances. They honed the songs on Works For Tomorrow during an extended residency at Chicago’s Hideout Club, and the packed, sweaty energy of those shows is unmistakable on this new recording. Drummer and sometime lead vocalist Janet Beveridge Bean breaks free as never before, her vocals igniting the songs with an animalistic urgency, as she furiously propels the songs with pure command from behind the kit. Works For Tomorrow was recorded and mixed by Greenberg at the Loft (Wilco’s studio) and Mayfair Recordings. The 10 tracks on the album center on embracing a future which does not succumb to the past, but challenges it in order to adapt and grow. This reframing and understanding of history is keenly stated in the album’s title track when Rizzo sings, “You see her, this must be the beginning or the end of whatever that was.” From the reimagined, deliberate version of Judy Henske and Jerry Yester’s “Snowblind,” to the quieter, melodic tracks like “Deep Lakes,” Eleventh Dream Day’s fiery performances and inventive arrangements make for the most complex and compelling record of their career. Works For Tomorrow finds the band fixed on the road ahead, barreling toward the horizon with the radio turned up -- way, way up.

GENRE : ROCK / EXPERIMENTAL FILE UNDER: “G” Guardian Alien “M” Man Forever RELEASE DATE : July 24, 2015

NO EXPORT TO EUROPE, AUSTRALIA, CANADA EXPORTABLE TO JAPAN Greg Fox (Guardian Alien, Liturgy, Zs) and Kid Millions (Man Forever, Oneida, People of the North) each approach their drums with a spiritual reverence. Together, they test the boundaries of rhythmic interplay through subtle and ecstatic means. They are often highlights of the groups they’re respectively known for, Liturgy and Oneida, while concurrently leading cutting-edge ensembles and collaborating with some of the most innovative musicians of our time. Explorative by nature, each drummer is constantly challenging themselves and setting new musical goals, and it is these qualities that have made them in demand not only in New York, but through out the world. Lost Time is their first collaborative album, sparked by a mutual admiration and cemented by a deep and abiding friendship that has grown over the past five years. Improvisation is a language, and this album is a dialogue between two skilled musicians whose hunger to cover new musical ground binds them together. Their friendship is not only an essential foundation for, but also a key ingredient of, this display of improvisational and compositional mastery Lost Time is comprised of two long pieces that represent opposite ends of a musical spectrum, one blasting and one meditative. “Telegy/Time Lapse” is an astounding array of rhythm and noise, with Fox and Millions using their amplified heartbeats as the backdrop for percussive mayhem. Both musicians are maniacal, playing frantic but precise patterns bolstered by synthesizer loops and bursts of noise programmed by Fox. The incorporation of their heartbeats, the synchronization of their internal and external rhythms, was inspired by Fox’s mentor and legendary free-jazz drummer Milford Graves. “Post Encounter Effect” exists in a space of relative calm, its complexity less conspicuous but no less profound. Fox and Millions play a slow and steady pattern that phases in and out of sync like a slow-motion Reich composition throughout the piece’s 20 minute run-time. Perhaps most surprising is the emphasis on non-percussive instruments, guitars, keyboard, and even trumpet, that provide a tonal base drone and further the rhythmic exchange significantly. OVERVIEW: Moda Black’s Little Black Book series was inspired by the desire for a new, more diverse, more personal platform for artists to express themselves. An album, remix album, compilation, mix series, autobiography and photo-book all rolled into one - a chance for artists to reveal a wealth of new material, whilst also dipping into their back-catalogue and allowing it to be re-imagined by new artists. The Little Black Book gets inside the artists’ minds and looks to the future and what’s to come. For the second edition of Little Black Book, the reigns have been handed to the prolific and much loved Groove Armada. From early inspiration courtesy of 90’s rave collective DiY to the worldwide success of six albums, long summers in Ibiza and global live tours with such a storied history, it’s hard to image where they’d even begin with a project like this. The boys brought the curtain down on their live tours at Brixton in 2010 because they wanted to go back to basics; House music and the warehouses where GA started cue a series of releases on labels from Hypercolour to Hot Creations. The mix on CD1 Groove Armada seven new original pieces of music as part of a 77 minute journey that also includes Tony Allen, Candi Staton, re-edits of a host of GA classics and their rework of Arthur Baker anthem, Rockers Revenge. The second disc then sees 12 excellent producers redefine classic Groove Armada records, resulting in some spectacular new versions of tracks like ‘Love Sweet Sound’, ‘Superstylin’, ‘Chicago’ and ‘I See You Baby’ from the likes of Kolsch, andhim, Huxley, Jaymo & Andy George, Joris Voorn, PillowTalk, Emperor Machine, Marco Faraone, Chaim, Hauswerks, Walker & Royce and wAFF. Included in the special notebook version of the release is Andy Cato's account of the GA journey from Castlemorton to L.A too - one that has taken them right back to the start. "People were saying if you're going to write new material you need to put it out on a major, get the band back together, unleash the machine. But we don't want to do that. We want to play and make house music, and that's all”. OTHER ACTIVITY: http://www.groovearmada.com | http://www.facebook.com/groovearmada | http://www.twitter.com/groovearmada

Andra Faye & Scott Ballantine Coulda Woulda Shoulda

“Andra Faye was a member of Saffire - The Uppity Blues Women from 1992 until their retirement in 2009, and has earned a sterling reputation for her multistringed versatility, especially for blues mandolin. She was dubbed “First Lady of the Blues Mandolin” by Mandolin Magazine in 2013. Her world-class vocals are power packed, with a playful sensuality that perfectly matches the humor and heartache of her material. Scott Ballantine’s facility on guitar encompasses jazz, blues, rock & country. His guitar chops are finely honed by many years of playing and his phrasing is exquisite, almost vocallike in quality. His plucks, slides, bends and vibrato are fluid; Scott doesn’t drive a song as much as he floats it all downstream. COULDA WOULDA SHOULDA, the duo’s second album together, serves up a baker’s dozen of tasty tracks, including eight originals that flow effortlessly on a river of sultry ache and bawdy humor. Enjoy”... – Bill Stagg, Music Promoter (from the liner notes) “I am so glad these two found each other. Musically, they met their match — Scott’s guitar wizardry combined with Andra’s vocal magic (+ mandolin + bass + violin + guitar). On this CD, however, they have given us another powerful collaboration as songwriters. You will find their songs to be as good as their playing and singing. And that’s high praise, I’m talking 360°. They are the Tuck and Patti of the blues!” – Gaye Adegbalola

scaterd few : Sin Disease LP

btv100

There was an odd music segregation perpetuated by the ‘70s Jesus movement hippie folk and psychedelic artists that codified into its own music industry. And, perhaps you may have heard of some of those artists that would have crossed over into the mainstream or reached a level of popularity to warrant attention. Enitrely under most listeners' radar, there was a connected and extremely small, but vibrant, underground punk scene that existed in dank church basements and local VFW halls inspired by the bands in The Decline of Western Civilization and Our Band Could Be Your Life. Scaterd Few were one of those bands that initially emerged with a cassette demo in 1983. They had a lot of friends in the punk rock scene, many of whom were homeless or squatters, and straddled punk rock and this Christian music culture. These street punks would often draw the rancor from folks responsible for the non-traditional show venues when the band played shows. With increasing difficulty and trouble, the band went defunct and members concentrated on a goth/new wave side-project, Cynget, that was making some waves in the LA club scene. Nothing panned out for an album release and that band also ended.

RIYL: Bad Brains, Jane’s Addiction, Dead Kennedys GENRE: Southern California Punk Rock, Dub, Reggae WORLDWIDE RELEASE

After a short break from music, Allan Aguirre reached out to his brother Omar to get Scaterd Few back together. The reformed Scaterd Few added some of the Cynget sound to their punk style, blending influences from Bauhaus, T. Rex, and David Bowie with Bad Brains, early Anthrax, Minor Threat, and Jane’s Addiction. Allan also began a life-long friendship with H.R., front man for DC’s Bad Brains. This friendship afforded Allan and his band support slots on Human Rights bills culminating with Scaterd Few doubling as Human Rights on the West Coast for H.R.’s SST Records release, Charge. Scaterd Few ended up getting a record deal with a small Christian label which resulted in the classic Sin Disease album, released in July 1990. The material was controversial, especially for that scene, perhaps due to their punk scene legitimacy in touring with H.R., the intense lyrical content (ranging from drug addiction to gang shootings to hypocritical televangelists), or even the weirdness of Aguirre shaving off his eyebrows like Pink from The Wall. The straw that broke the camel’s back was Aguirre admitting to smoking pot in the studio while recording Sin Disease and that some of the members didn’t share the same religious beliefs. That pretty much got the record banned from sale in that particular, very conservative market and the label dropped the band. But, the controversy also more fervently fueled the complete outsider fanbase. Sin Disease is an album shared among fans over the intervening years.Ask around, if someone has heard this record, they love this record. It’s been a classic for Burnt Toast Vinyl for years. We’re proud to release this as a limited pressing of 500 gatefold vinyl copies. It’s been re-mastered with the improved audio available as a digital download with the vinyl. “No one could have been adequately prepared for the sort of seismic jolt set off by Sin Disease upon its release. Merciless, brutal, neurotic, Tourettic, and consistently stunning, Scaterd Few's debut didn't push the boundaries of rock -- it annihilated them. Allan Aguirre's vocal delivery was chilling: a wild, unconstrained howl that went from gothic moan to banshee yelp within the space of a single lyric. He sings like a man on fire, wild-eyed and crazy, yelping out each dire prophecy as if every word might be his last. The band's music is equally urgent. Scaterd Few summoned a mad-scientist hybrid of dub, reggae, post-punk, and heavy metal that outshone even visionary avatars like the Pop Group. "While Reprobate" is a searing blast of white noise, Omar Domkus' elastic bass bounding and snapping over Sam West's machine-gun percussion as Aguirre shrieks lyrics like "Kiss me my sin disease contaminates!/Benevolent apathy regurgitate!" The group's masterpiece, "Later (L.A. 1989)," is bleak and sinister, bassline creepy and shivery as spider's legs with Aguirre again playing prophet of doom. ” — J. Edward Keyes, allmusic.com “Seamlessly melding punk, speed metal, funk, reggae, and goth into a deliriously intense sound all their own, Scaterd Few was like a shot of adrenaline right to the heart. But the real treat was Ramald Domkus (now known as Allan Aguirre) and his Perry Farrel/Andrew Eldritch vocals. Wailing like a banshee, or stooping to a low growl, his vocal style is definitely unique and bizarre...Scaterd Few’s Sin Disease may be one of the greatest albums that nobody seems to know about. I challenge you to listen to “Lights Out” and hear Aguirre scream “Please stop William/The wrong assassination”—lyrics that were inspired after he saw a young friend gunned down in a drive-by — and not get chills.” — Jason Morehead, Opus Zine

LP WM45LP 5024545704013 £28.99

2014 album Waiting for a Sign marked the return of Githead after a five-year break from recording and pushed further than their previous records, underscoring the band’s commitment to pursuing new directions. Many of the classic Githead tropes are here: the hypnotic, motorik repetition, the weighty bass lines, and the dreamy melodicism that have come to define the band’s aesthetic. But Waiting for a Sign isn’t about sticking with a proven formula: Githead are forward-looking musicians, committed to reinvention rather than recycling. For this album they upped the ante, arriving at the studio without any written material and trusting that their response to each other’s extemporization, as well as to the mood and the surroundings, would get the creative juices flowing.
