Born in a Brooklyn warehouse in 1997, 12-piece ensemble Antibalas is credited with introducing Afrobeat to a wider global audience, influencing countless musicians and developing a live show that is the stuff of legend. & THE BUBU GANG Janka Nabay & the Bubu Gang is the alchemy of the Sierra Leone singer’s ancient tribal Bubu music with a throbbing pulse provided by a band that includes past members of Gang Gang Dance, Skeletons and Starring. It's utterly unique. Drawing from the sunny energy of Ghanaian highlife, the extended improvisations of 70s electric Miles Davis, the hypnotic rhythms of classic Afro-beat, and the swirling echoes of 60s and 70s psychedelia.

In the mid 90s, during the Sierra Leonean civil war, Janka resuscitated and modernized bubu, adding drum machine kicks, and twitching synths to its airy hum of blown bamboo shoots and carburetor pipes. Being a national star and accustomed to playing before sold out football stadiums, he escaped the civil war and relocated to Philadelphia. After a decade off the musical radar, he released the well-received Bubu King EP in 2010 on True Panther Sounds, and performed with the newly formed Bubu Gang in clubs throughout Brooklyn and NYC. In May 2012, En Yay Sah's first single, Feba, was premiered by Pitchfork and then quickly spread across the blogosphere.

We've been working on a Tim Maia album for 10 years. This was to have been the next in our World Psychedelic Classics series that was to come out after the release of our Shuggie Otis album. However a 10 year negotiation with Tim Maia's estate slightly delayed our release.
MARKETING POINTS: Not a whole lot as we are just trying beginning to tell people who Tim Maia was. A lot more to follow though… TOURING: Tim is no longer with us.
Tim Maia was a huge star in Brazil. And everyone in Brazil has a story about him. The one we heard this week was Tim's Brazilian record label wanted to give him a present as he was selling so many albums. As Tim was Brazil's first soul singer the record label paid for him to record in America with the JB's (James Brown's band). When Tim got back to Brazil he told the record label "Unless you pay me $10,000 I'm going to erase the tapes". Andre Midanni, the label head, said "Tim, we paid for this as a present for you and it's not something we were planning on putting out. We can’t give you $10,000." The tapes have never been found. Here is a 12" of some of the tracks from our album. Between 2006 and 2011, Chapel Hill’s Spider Bags toured the U.S. in a countless crisscross, sharing stages with Reigning Sound, King Khan BBQ Show, The Golden Boys, and Titus Andronicus to name just a few. After releasing two excellent full lengths for San Francisco's Birdman records (A Celebration of Hunger, 2007 & Goodbye Cruel World, Hello Crueler World, 2009), the boys had hit a crossroads. A heavy touring schedule saw members dropping like flies, with only mainstays/lifers Dan McGee (songwriter, guitar, vocals) and Gregg Levy (guitar, bass) left standing. But invigorated with a batch of brand new songs, they completed the current quartet lineup with mighty Rock Forbes on drums and Steve Oliva on bass. The quartet packed up a few essentials into a mini-‐van and headed to their spiritual home of Memphis, TN. They set up shop in the home of engineer and musician Andrew McCalla. In a matter of only three days, the Spider Bags recording session became a non-‐stop party and impromptu “happening”. The band played an in-‐store at legendary Goner records, a frenetic live show to a capacity audience, and all the while managed to record Shake My Head, sleep be damned. This record is a document of a true rock-‐n-‐roll party, where members of Memphis bands and luminaries like Jack Oblivian and Harlan T. Bobo wandered in and out of the sessions to either lay down some guitar or backing vocals or just drink a beer and have a good time. And a good time was had, as you can actually hear on the record itself. For Shake My Head, Spider Bags have let go -‐ kicking off the proverbial shoes, just going in for the pure fun of it. The result is a phenomenal blend of Beefheartian weirdness, gang vocals, and enough guitars and riffs to m ake any Reigning Sound, Royal Trux, or Ty Segall fan plenty happy. The songs themselves pull together a schizoid melding of Stax-‐style-‐R&B (Simona La Ramona), Brill Building melodies (Friday Night), west coast psychedelia (Shape I Was In) and ‘down on the street’ swagger (Quetzalcoatl Love Song). DJ Kentaro is returning in summer 2012 with his second album “CONTRAST,” his first since "2007's "Enter", which was a Number 1 indie album in Japan. FALTY DL - 'HARDCOURAGE' Kitted out in the finest of old skool, trad Ninja livery, here comes the new single from Drew Lustman aka FaltyDL. Designed squarely for the dancefloor, the two tracks catch hold of you and never let go. “Hardcourage” starts off ostensibly four to the floor before working in enough subtle rhythmic drive to satisfy the most ardent polyrhythmagist. Dub influences abutted with jazz swing and rave insistence, FaltyDL makes the hard work of getting you moving look easy. “Our House Stab” continues at a similar tempo and with a melancholy feel which resolves into such a jackalicious groove that shape-making is all but guaranteed. FaltyDL is one of the hottest names in electronic music right now. Immersed in the old New York and Chicago sound yet creating a more subtle and ultimately futuristic mash-up of sonics, Lustman takes his influences and makes them fresh. The sometime sushi-chef and now New York resident has been turning heads since 2008, when Mike Paradinas signed his USified versions of UK Garage to Planet Mu and released them on an unsuspecting world. THE INVISIBLE - 'WINGS' Originally conceived by Dave Okumu, singer/guitarist with The Invisible, as a break-up song, “Wings” was transformed into something else by the death of his mother. In the first instance he had built the lyrics around the image of a bird trying to fly in a contained space – “but I was that contained space.” Now, after his mother’s sudden death, “I felt like I was observing myself all the time, as if I'd become my own CCTV, checking to see if I could function. The song changed, both in the way Dave approached it and how it sounded. The result is classic Invisible – a driving beat, warm bass and a vocal and melody of such subtlety that the result is at once achingly sad and strangely uplifting. Remix duties are dealt with by Floating Points. Never one to shy away from the epic, Sam Shepherd stetches out the original, adds gently swinging electronic drums and subtle ambient touches, all of which draw the focus back to the quality of the songwriting. Inspired by recent performances, the single is rounded out by a brand new version of “London Girl.” The standout track from their Mercury-nominated debut, “London Girl” is here given a driving, dark, drum-heavy treatment that nods back to the original while giving a hint of the power and intensity of their current live shows.

Ned Collette moved to Berlin from his native Melbourne two years ago. A well known and respected singer-songwriter in his own country and in underground circles worldwide, he has toured Europe previously with the likes of Joanna Newsom, Akron/Family, Bill Callahan and Nina Nastasia. His early musical output was based mostly in experimental music, before he gravitated towards more traditional song structures. His new album "2" (his fourth album but his first outside of Australia) will be released in August. It is a mix of experimental pop song writing, musique concrete and dark folky soundscapes. His current solo shows are performed with voice, nylon string guitar and samples. After eight years fronting New Zealand's acclaimed "trouble gum art punks" The Mint Chicks, Kody Nielson unveils a new project Opossom with the captivating album Electric Hawaii. Following a June release in Australia and New Zealand on Create/Control, the album will be released in the rest of the world via Fire Records in August. The Mint Chicks chapter in Kody's career closed with the band splitting time between their American base in Portland OR and hometown Auckland. Brother Ruban formed a new band, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, and Kody began producing diverse projects including Bic Runga's recent album and Auckland punk up-and-comers, The DHDFD's. Electric Hawaii presented a new challenge, an album written and performed with just a little help from others Bic Runga lending a vocal while Kody's father Chris Nielson (a regular Mint Chicks collaborator) plays trumpet. The rest comes directly from the brain, hands and heart of Kody. Home-written, recorded and mixed by himself with just the final mastering courtesy of Howie Weinberg, Electric Hawaii is a unique beast - it is not the singersongwriter solo album of a former punk rock band singer. It's a further exploration of Kody's musical journey into a lively, engaging world of carefully layered sonic layers of light and dark. It's an album about love, DIY, drugs and freedom. And why end up Opossom? The mental escape from daily life during the creation of "Electric Hawaii" produced Kody's nocturnal instinctive animal... feisty, vicious and enigmatically cute. The new direction and new sounds incorporate what Kody terms as an overt attempt to add some of his personal Polynesian background to his blend of beatnik psychedelica made from out of context genres, surf rock to the Velvet Underground, modern and ancient electronica and jazz. The Sydney trio remold the tune in a club-ready edit on the A-side, whilst the flipside comes courtesy of breakout Belgian techno and house producer Locked Groove (hotflush, Turbo Recordings). The initial ambience of Locked Groove’s extended take is deceptive, as it eventually lifts into the kind of thumping euphoria usually reserved for Panorama Bar’s sunrise-drenched raves. Seekae have recently performed at the Sydney Opera house as part of internationally acclaimed music and light festival Vivid Live.
