BENJAMIN GIBBARD FORMER LIVES
bark130 CD / LP+MP3
STREET DATE: OCTOBER 16, 2012 After fifteen years in Death Cab for Cutie during which that band and his other projects (including The Postal Service and other collaborations) have sold nearly 5 million albums in the United States alone, Ben Gibbard didn’t make his first solo album in search of a new beginning; instead, it closes a door. “These songs span eight years, three relationships, living in two different places, drinking then not drinking” he says of the dozen newly-recorded tracks that comprise Former Lives. “They’re a side story, not a new chapter.” “In Death Cab, we’ve always been very specific,” Ben explains. “We record for the album and then maybe two or three more.” But fresh ideas and new experiences don’t stop during the weeks and months between the studio and the tour bus; life rarely follows a neatly organized itinerary. “When I’m home between records my only job is writing songs,” Ben says. “So when I get up in the morning, what else am I gonna do?” Over time, stray ideas – some fully-formed, others just flecks of melody – filled notebooks and hard drives but as Death Cab songs they never quite, in Ben’s words, “fit into the whole.”
TRACKLISTING 1. Shepherd’s Bush Lullaby 2. Dream Song 3. Teardrop Windows 4. Bigger Than Love 5. Lily 6. Something’s Rattling (Cowpoke) 7. Duncan, Where Have You Gone? 8. Oh, Woe 9. A Hard One to Know 10. Lady Adelaide 11. Broken Yolk in Western Sky 12. I’m Building a Fire
Between fruitful sessions with Death Cab for what would eventually become 2011’s Codes & Keys, Ben holed up with some friends in Los Angeles to make some “solo” recordings, enjoying both the careful process of turning what had seemed like disparate material into a cogent album of songs and the spontaneity, as Ben puts it, to say things like “fuck it, let’s get a Mariachi band.” Former Lives is a gorgeous shadow anthology, the exuberant sound of one of our best songwriters looking back and making something great and new in the process. RELEASE DATE 10.16.12
RELEASE DATE: MARCH 29TH, 2011
THERE WERE SEVEN The Herbaliser are poised to release their first album in four years There Were Seven - through their own imprint Department H. There Were Seven, is The Herbaliser's seventh album of original material in the band's seventeen-year history. It is a return to their signature sound of gigantic hip hop beats combined with atmospheric orchestral elements but with a less familiar, psychedelic, amplified edge to it. The album is, for the most part, railing against a music industry machine that seems to churn out pop/dance/rap robots that only speak autotune, by the day. Not descending into retro but sounding oddly futuristic in places, the recording makes the point that we can move things forward without removing human beings from the equation. Having established a tradition of working with top-drawer vocal talents (MF Doom, Jean Grae, Roots Manuva, Rakaa Iriscience, Seaming To) the Herbs' present a stellar line-up on this release. First single, ”The Lost Boy" places Hannah Clive's haunting vocal amongst steely, descending guitars, eerie organ, and a whirring, oscillating, vintage Moog. Up-and-coming wordsmith, George the Poet, sets the world to rights on "A Sad State of Affairs". "Zero Hill" features Twin Peaks in a world where making music is illegal, over a beat that sounds like it was made on an old 'Speak and Spell' toy. The high energy spitting flute of "Take 'em On", the electro-funk of "Mother Dove", the scintillating dub of "Extravagance" and Teenburger cheerfully dispatching the living dead are just a few of the highlights of this engaging record. The overriding theme is Analog vs Digital. A dystopian future, the music industry, a computer learning to imitate the human voice, a tribute to Danny Glover, breaking rules for the sake of it, social isolation and even Zombie apocalypse are also thrown into the mix. All delivered with that mix of drama and wit that is The Herbaliser's stock-in-trade. TRACKLISTING: 1) RETURN OF THE SEVEN 2) THE LOST BOY 3) WELCOME TO EXTRAVAGANCE 4) MOTHER DOVE 5) ZERO HILL 6) TAKE ‘EM ON 7) A SAD STATE OF AFFAIRS 8) SETTING UP 9) CRIMES AND MISDEMEANOURS 10) WHAT YOU ASKED FOR 11) MARCH OF THE DEAD THINGS 12) DEEP IN THE WOODS 13) INSIDE THE MACHINE 14) DANNY GLOVER

PRESENTS
Mr eclectic electric, Mr internationalist (69 countries to date), part time Fat Freddy’s Drop collaborator/remixer and DJ (Electric Freddy), the John Coltrane of electronic music, Grammy nominated (2002), multi award winning DJ and producer, Daddy Vad returns with his 6th solo album entitled ‘Don't Be Scared’. Is it possible to create something entirely new? What does one of the fathers of the new beat scene do in a time of such huge tectonic plate movements? ‘Don’t Be Scared’ is an album about change, about progress, about moulting the old, cutting the dead wood away and bringing in the new. Part hip hop in mind-set, part electronic in sound, and part soulful in spirit with undertones of tribalism and some very ethnic and hypnotic elements, this album is rooted to bass culture, connecting dots along the way. Abstract dark sounds from previous albums such as USSR Repertoire (96) get rediscovered. Twisted dancehall crunked bass lines meet traditional African rhythms in a Bollywood cinema, whilst lush strings and grand pianos sit next to haunting morphed keyboards; afro beat licks and smoked out grooves. This album focuses on the instrumental and brings the beat to the foreground, but look forward to vocals from long-time collaborator and fellow ‘Oneselfer’ Yarah Bravo, Sabira Jade (The Electric) gets political, and new sounds resonate from upcoming singers D’Angelo’esque Jazz Bailey, Hawaiian soulstress Karen Be and gruff funkman Greg Blackman. More pensive than recent albums, melancholy meets tropical vibes meets a strange BBC reporter high on eboga root. Even Jamie Fox makes a guest appearance talking dance moves. This is global music, peng bass. What genre is this? Not sure, but one thing’s for sure; there is no one else who makes music quite like Vadim. This album is perhaps the danciest we have witnessed from Vadim and this is something that for those who have seen him live in the last few years will have felt. Its a tropical bass extravaganza with no limits, no boundaries, no boxes. A nod to your mind, body and soul. www.djvadim.com TRACKLISTING (DOUBLE LP) Key Selling Points • • • • •

Willie Nelson Heroes
National Release Date: LP 10.16.2012 Yep Roc Records is proud to offer the exclusive North American vinyl edition of Willie Nelson’s latest LP, Heroes. Heroes is the first album to be featured as part of Willie’s homecoming to Legacy recordings, and his 65th studio recording. No themes or gimmicks involved with this album, just 14 new recordings produced by Buddy Cannon (Academy of Country Music’s producer of the year 2006), and recorded with Willie’s friends and family. The strength of Heroes is Willie’s unmatched way with a melody and his committed love of collaboration in the service of the song. Many of the songs here - some new compositions, some covers, and some new takes on old Willie classics - take on a reflective, emotional tone. But there’s plenty of fun and humor involved as well. Snoop Dogg, Kris Kristofferson and Jamey Johnson pitch in on the rollicking good time of “Roll Me Up”, while Willie and Merle Haggard add depth and grace to their duet on “A Horse Called Music”. Other guests on the album include Sheryl Crow (in a duet of Tom Waits’ “Come On Up To The House), Ray Price and Billy Joe Shaver. Also featured prominently are Willie’s sons, Lukas and Micah Nelson. Lukas contributes vocals on 9 of the tracks here, and the similarity of his voice to that of a younger Willie is astounding. Also not to be missed are the astonishing, if a bit unexpected, covers of Pearl Jam (“Just Breathe”) and Coldplay (“The Scientist”). This beautiful album - sometimes amusing, sometimes poignant, but always engaging and surprising - should have broad appeal among Nelson’s core fans and beyond.
"Willie’s most consistent collection in quite a few years" -Yahoo Music "It must have been quite a party, and the result is a record that is consistently entertaining and, at its best moments, is as compelling as anything we’re likely to hear in 2012." -Popmatters "Heroes may be elegiac, but it's as spirited as it is poignant." -Uncut marketing: • Latest release from Willie Nelson - country music legend; American Icon • Exclusive vinyl release in North America • 2xLP - 180 gram vinyl - Gatefold Jacket • Guest performances by: Merle Haggard, Snoop Dogg, Jamey Johnson, Sheryl Crow, Billy Joe Shaver, Ray Price • Stirring covers of tracks by Pearl Jam (“Just Breathe”), Coldplay (“The Scientist”), Tom Waits (“Come On Up To The House”) • The recording is a family affair with Willie’s sons Lukas and Micah Nelson playing prominent roles. Jukebox the Ghost
I Love You Always Forever 7” National Release Date: 10.16.2012
Jukebox the Ghost has always included interesting cover songs in their live set. One of the favorite among fans is their version of Donna Lewis’ 1996 hit, “I Love You Always Forever”. So, for Record Store Day 2012, Jukebox the Ghost decided to release a studio version of this track as a vinyl 7” in a sleeve containing artwork hand drawn by each band member. The limited edition (only 500 were made) 7” was a highly sought after Record Store Day release. Since this release, the band has released their third album, Safe Travels to critical acclaim, as well as strong support from AAA radio for the album’s first single, “Somebody”. Jukebox the Ghost spent summer 2012 on a national headlining tour book-ended by performances at the Bonnaroo and Outside Lands music festivals. Just in time for their national tour with Motion City Soundtrack in October and November 2012, Jukebox the Ghost is releasing “I Love You Always Forever,” but with fan created cover art. The band held a contest where fans were asked to create a cover design for the printed cover design. The winning design, as determined by the members of Jukebox the Ghost, will be the cover of this release of the 7”.

Sloan is re-releasing their breakthrough album, Twice Removed, on vinyl as a limited edition deluxe package that includes three LPs, one 7”, a photo book and other extras. Originally released in 1994, during the hey day of “grunge rock”, it was not much of a commercial success in the US at the time, but is now considered to be one of their best albums. In fact, it is considered to be one of the greatest Canadian albums of all time. Highlights include the opener, “Penpals”, “I Hate My Generation”, “I Can Feel It” and “People of the Sky”, but the entire album is a classic collection of catchy pop songs that defy their era. The album has been out of print on vinyl since the mid-90s and it has never been released like this before. A very limited quantity of these box sets are being made available to the US. EACH TWICE REMOVED DELUXE EDITION IS HOUSED IN A HEAVY DUTY, TIP-ON BOX AND INCLUDES: • 3 VINYL LP's: All LP's include 11" x 22" lyric inserts and standard LP jackets. • Twice Removed - Unavailable on vinyl since the 1990's. • The Demos - Demo versions of all the songs from Twice Removed in sequential order. • The Outtakes - Demo recordings of the songs that didn't make it to Twice Removed. • 7" VINYL SINGLE: • Two more bonus demo recordings. • 32 PAGE 12" x 12" BOOKLET: Containing unreleased photos, artwork and ephemera from the Twice Removed era. Known for his tenure as the primary songwriter, vocalist and guitarist in Pedro the Lion, David Bazan retired the band moniker to continue making music under his own name. Now available on vinyl, his first solo album Fewer Moving Parts finds the beloved Seattle songwriter roaring back to his creative roots, performing and recording everything himself in his home studio. His signature songwriting, voice, and melodies have never been better here, and are framed in layered harmonies, multi-tracked guitars, analog keyboards, and intricate production. This beautifully-packaged 10-song EP plays like a full-length, and includes two different versions of five Bazan songs, each recorded in a stripped-down acoustic version and another version with full instrumentation. David Bazan will be starting a 6 week tour November 1 supporting the vinyl release of Fewer Moving Parts and all the Pedro the Lion catalog (from Jade Tree Records) that will be released on vinyl! Public Image Ltd follow up new album with AA side single Out Of The Woods / Reggie Song. Taken from ‘This Is PiL’ their first album in 20 years the single will also contain various live tracks taken from the band’s monumental performance at New York City’s Terminal 5 in 2010. Widely regarded as one of the most innovative and influential bands of all time PiL's music and vision earned them 5 UK Top 20 Singles and 5 UK Top 20 Albums. With a shifting line-up and unique sound John Lydon guided the band from their debut album 'First Issue' in 1978 through to 1992's 'That What Is Not', before a 17 year hiatus. John then resurrected PiL in 2009 playing live worldwide. Now after 20 years yet another new and unique chapter is set to unfold in the shape of new PiL material. Out of the Woods is about Stonewall Jackson, one of America’s greatest generals and a tactical genius, who against overwhelming odds, helped win the battle of Chancellorsville in the War of Southern Independence. The “Reggie” in Reggie Song is a real person and a good friend of John Lydon’s from the multicultural melting pot of Finsbury Park in North London where they both grew up. Out Of The Woods /Reggie Song is self-funded by PiL and will be released on PiL’s own label ‘PiL Official’ via Cargo UK Distribution. Public Image Ltd live line up : Vocals - John Lydon (Sex Pistols), Drums - Bruce Smith (Pop Group/Slits), Bass - Scott Firth/ wrote and recorded the new material in the UK last year at Steve Winwood’s studio in the Cotswolds. In what has already been very busy 2012 for PiL the band recently returned to London to play a very special show at the Forum on August 11th resulting in a 5 out of 5 Live Review from The Independenthttp://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/music/reviews/pil-forum-london-8038259.html Press from new album ‘This Is PiL’ so far: "It's simply a joy to hear Lydon in fine voice, getting stuck into thorny matters with his own unique, raw nerve gusto, backed by a cookin' band" - MOJO Magazine- 4 out of 5 // "Never mind the Pistols- this PiL is worth taking” - The Times- 4 out of 5 // "Representing the experimental instincts of Lydon the teenage Can fan, it sees him putting his ire to use over spectrally funky tracks warped and shaped by Lu Edmonds's byzantine guitars" - Q Magazine- 4 out of 5 // "Buy this record. JOHN
10/16/12
CONQUEROR John The Conqueror’s self-titled debut album is an amalgamation of the many sounds and styles (old and new) mined from both the North and the South. Cousins Pierre Moore (vocals & guitar) and Michael Gardner (drums) are natives of Jackson, MS, while bassist Ryan Lynn hails from Philly – where the trio now call home. Together they mix a bedrock of raw deep blues with funk, soul, punk and scuzzed-up rock-n-roll into one helluva potent musical Molotov cocktail. What makes John The Conqueror so refreshing, however, is their honest, simple, yet extremely passionate approach to their music. Moore and Gardner have been playing together in bands since their college days in Oxford, MS, and Moore learned to play guitar in his early teens from a homeless man who slept in the back room of an auto repair shop.

The trio from Mississippi, now based in Philly, have the smoothness of classic 50’s soul mixed with a southern twang.’ Named after an African-American mythological folk legend, of whom the likes of Dr. John, Muddy Waters, and Willie Dixon have sung, the band possesses a magical power that empowers emotion. – Knuckle Rumbler The swaggery trio might be Philly’s answer to Gary Clark Jr. – The Key / WXPN

MAMIFFER / PYRAMIDS Rare is the pairing of 2 bands for a split release, when their artistic visions actually compliment each other, where two distinct voices manage to create a cohesive piece instead of a varied playlist, and where the split format actually makes total sense. Such is the case with the split release by Mamiffer and Pyramids. Cryptic Seattle duo Mamiffer has a young but prolific history of exploring various uncharted corners of sonic space and re-envisioning the templates of drone, doom, neo-classical, and dark ambient. The mysterious and elusive Denton, Texas band Pyramids is just as enigmatic. Eschewing live shows altogether, what little is known about the band is limited to their recorded output and the terse liner notes accompanying them. Flirting with shoegaze, black metal, musique concrete, psych rock, and industrial, often within the space of just one song, Pyramids seems less like an actual band than a curator, a master of ceremonies selecting disparate sound sources and stringing them together into a coherent whole.

The resulting split by these two bands could almost qualify as a collaboration of sorts. Though the two sides of the record are both the independent product of each group, the record has a unified mission. The entirety of the album harnesses a unique kind of understated beauty nestled within layers of caustic noise. Both groups thrive on hypnotic elegance, conjuring subdued melodies from unlikely sources. A lone gritty sustained guitar note feeds back in harmony with a sparse piano line; an oscillator weaves a woozy, narcotic tune amid a haze of white noise; a chopped up and manipulated vocal line yields an even more breathtaking ballad. But neither band believes in easy victories—these rewards are reserved for the patient and the curious. Blocks of distorted dissonance, cacophonous sub-bass rumbles, electronic flutters and chirps, field recordings of bottles rolling, and various other forms of sonic detritus create a tense and occasionally jarring counterpoint to the moments of sublime grandeur. Independently of one another, Mamiffer and Pyramids have continued their legacies of experimenting with the conventions of songcraft, the manipulation of traditional instrumentation, and the boundary between light and dark. Together, they have forged a singular statement of pathos and redemption, beauty and menace. DESCRIPTIVE TEXT: The OMG Simian Alien Defense League delivers their fifth sonic dissertation on the complex and devolving relationship between man and his simain counterparts. Christmas details man’s myraid gifts to Mother Nature—and the incalculable repercussions thereof. Apes and chimps unite to fend off the “rewards” of civilization, but man’s capacity for avarice and cruelty knows no bounds. Mass insurrection results in a battle for the ages. Evolution, as they say, is just a theory, but this much is true: The only good human is a dead human. Opposable thumbs notwithstanding, the professors of the OMG Institute guide the listener through a world in which the primates are hostile, the metal is heavy, and philistines reap the benefits of their own cupidity. As always, OMG retains members of Isis, Cave In and Converge and their collective talents, inasmuch as they apply to this common purpose.
Featuring Members of ISIS, Converge, Cave In, Zozobra, Mamiffer, Doomriders, etc. “CHOICE PRESS QUOTES”: “Maximum volume and raging metal is balanced skilfully with drone and ambience to create a record that is so much more than the mere sum of its considerably talented parts. To pigeonhole it as metal would be wrong; likewise to liken it to post-rock releases would be serving Christmas an injustice” - Drowned in Sound
ALSO AVAILABLE FROM OLD MAN GLOOM:

“One would be correct in assuming that it isn't only the band's consistent output of material that places them somewhat beyond the typical "side-project" category, but that the sheer quality of the music would allow OMG to stand as its own outfit. Christmas dishes up an impressive combination of the styles employed by the aforementioned acts, while safely maintaining the sense of freshness and new life so synonymous with the winter mornings associated with its title.” - Lambgoat “Combining sludge with stoner rock and malicious metallic outbursts, quality wins over quantity and the ambient atmospheric tracks allow one to catch a breath before the next sonic wallop.” - Exclaim “Christmas is the aural analgesic headtrip of the year, and if you're prepared to check your metal-bound inhibitions at the door, you'll feast for years on its smorgasbord of amorphic delights.” - Splendid Magazine

With the decline of Western civilization comes a new pilgrimage of musicians looking to carve out their fates from the wreckage of the past. ÆGES are the new breed of California’s creative drifters. ÆGES was founded by Chicago-raised Larry Herweg (Pelican, San Angelus), former Seattleite Mark Holcomb (Undertow, Shift, San Angelus), multi-continent Kemble Walters (The Rise, The Blank Faces, Juliet...te and the Licks), and the sole California native Tony Baumeister (16, Cutthroats 9). Converging in Southern California across state lines and international waters, ÆGES use their world-wise musical expertise to rebuild the archetype of the heavy rock band. There’s a definite element of desert rock in ÆGES sound--the low-tuned guitars, the sludgy sun-baked riffs, the deceptive pop hook buried in the molasses-thick instrumentation. Yet the diverse backgrounds of the band members create a unique blend of perspectives and a resultantly fresh sound. The common sonic thread between the four individuals in ÆGES--their tenure in bands that explored the darker side of hardcore—manifests itself in the aggressive tonalities of their sound. But their divergent paths, both geographical and musical, broadened the emotional palette beyond the angst of their earlier bands. Their debut full length, “The Bridge”, was released via The Mylene Sheath (Caspian, Junius, Constants) on April 17th, 2012 and this 7” single for Southern Comfort follows on October 16th. The 7” was produced and engineered by the bands own Kemble Walters at The Canshaker Studio in Malibu, CA, and mastered by Mark Chalecki at Little Red Book Mastering (Omar Rodriguez Lopez, Goatsnake, Megadeth).

The new millennium ushered in a new, revitalized era of artistic integrity for LA. We saw it in the age of the acid-hazed ‘60s, the age of the nihilistic Regan-era punks, and the current age of abandoned archetypes of a failed economy. It’s creative optimism in a time of hopelessness. It’s the music of ÆGES. - Brian Cook

Just in time for our twenty year anniversary as a label, we are pleased that noted electronic duo Matmos has joined the roster, and is about to release the most conceptually elaborate yet weirdly poppy record of their career. The timing is apt, as Matmos members M. C. Schmidt and Drew Daniel will also be celebrating their own twenty year anniversary as musical and romantic partners this fall. The Ganzfeld EP will be released in advance of the new Matmos album, The Marriage of True Minds, which is forthcoming in early 2013. The EP and the album have the same conceptual basis: telepathy. For the past four years the band have been conducting parapsychological experiments based upon the classic Ganzfeld (“total field”) experiment, but with a twist: instead of sending and receiving simple graphic patterns, test subjects were put into a state of sensory deprivation by covering their eyes and listening to white noise on headphones, and then Matmos member Drew Daniel attempted to transmit “the concept of the new Matmos record” directly into their minds. During videotaped psychic experiments conducted at home in Baltimore and at Oxford University, test subjects were asked to describe out loud anything they saw or heard within their minds as Drew attempted transmission. The resulting transcripts became a kind of score that was then used by Matmos to generate music. If a subject hummed something, that became a melody; passing visual images suggested arrangement ideas, instruments, or raw materials for a collage; if a subject described an action, then the band members had to act that out and make music out of the noises generated in the process of the re-enactment. The Ganzfeld EP features two new Matmos tracks that are explicitly based upon psychic session material, and a throbbing minimal techno remix by RRose of the Matmos song “You”. Careening from widescreen electronic pop to eerie choral music, the results are eclectic, fun, and disorienting in equal measure.

Following the band’s self-titled debut released in Sept 1994 and Nassau released in March 1995, The Biz was the band’s third record in just over one calender year. It was recorded at John McEntire’s own Soma Studios. The instruments were mostly recorded live in only three days. The vocals were recorded by Prekop alone in five days. On Nassau the band experimented heavily with signal processing and on The Biz they continue that experimentation using less common forms of processing, more sparingly. They used a Roland Space Echo, EML-101, and ARP 2600 as both instruments as well as manipulators. Recording withstanding, The Biz continues to showcase the bands ability to mesh together their unusual blend of pop, soul and jazz into one seamless output.

Beacons of Ancestorship is Tortoise’s sixth full-length album released in June of 2009. Having sold through multiple vinyl pressings upon release it has been unavailable for a few years. We are happy to bring it back as part of our 20th Anniversary. Pressed on high quality virgin vinyl and presented in an old-style tip-on gatefold jacket with artworked inner sleeve and MP3 download coupon. A characteristic Tortoise album is one that traverses an encyclopedia of styles and reference points, a document of where musical intersections and dialogue are occurring at a given moment in time. Beacons of Ancestorship is no different, with nods to techno, punk, electro, lo-fi noise, cut-up beats, heavily processed synths, and mournful, elegiac dirges. We see these ideas working out in compositions like “High Class Slim Came Floatin’ In,” an eight-minute track which playfully references the world of ecstatic rave and dance culture with a curiously ambivalent, multipart suite overlaid with robotic, machine-sounding melodies that stop and start in several different time signatures before the song’s ultimate resolution; and again in “Yinxianghechengqi,” which begins as a straightforward uptempo math-rocker before steadily accelerating into a wall of fuzzy atonal sqwonk.

GENRE : ELECTRONIC/EXPERIMENTAL FILE UNDER: “F” Friel, Dan “P” Parts & Labor
Release Date: October 16, 2012 TRACK LISTING:
The Valedictorian/Exoskeleton EP, Dan Friel’s first release for Thrill Jockey, contains two brand new songs, as well as the first ever remixes of his music. “Valedictorian” opens the EP with a burst of adreneline, pure pop filtered through a layer of noise. “Exoskeleton” is more mysterious, with bursts of Friel’s overdriven synths coming in and out of focus over a steady 4/4 beat. The first remix is a clean, Italo disco take on “Exoskeleton” courtesy of Moss of Aura, the solo project of Gerrit Welmers, one third of Future Islands. Moss of Aura has released six albums and Welmers is currently working on the seventh. The final track is a sprawling, murky remix of “Ulysses,” by California dub-kraut duo Peaking Lights. The original version of “Ulysses” will appear on Total Folklore, Friel’s sophomore full-length, due out in February 2013 on Thrill Jockey. After playing in numerous noise and punk bands in high school around Amherst, MA (where he helped to found the Flywheel collective), Friel moved to New York, where he has been transforming cold, electronic sound into joyful noise since the early aughts. As a founding member of Parts & Labor, Friel crafted five albums and several singles and EPs that drew on noise rock, pop, and experimental electronic music. Concurrently with Parts & Labor’s ten year run, which ended this past February, Friel released numerous EPs on Night People, Green Age, Velocirecords, as well as a full-length on the venerable Important label. He has collaborated as a solo artist with Tyondai Braxton, Glenn Branca, and Damo Suzuki.

Recorded and produced in Tokyo and Brisbane, this edition is an exchange of mutual curiosity and open ended possibility. Rather than setting out with prescriptive or didactic ideals for their meeting, the musicians looked further afield for influences to shape their interactions. Field recordings, for example, played an important role in contouring the albums qualities and atmospheres. Locations removed and refocused, moments captured and redeployed. Drawing on Minamo’s sense of pace and sonic spatiality, English devised a number of arrangement strategies to compress, accentuate and expand Minamo’s initial sketches. Carefully editing and adding to the refined and measured contributions, the record took shape over two years of gradual process led production. A Path Less Travelled collects distant sonic smoke signals passed between one island and another.
“Between the placid beauty of Minamo’s disarticulated tunes and English’s harmonium and bass, the music courses with warmth... The drones are fat and windy, the instrumentation spindly and bright, creating a well-balanced sound mass that banks through prismatic timbres and textures.” – Pitchfork “a clinical display of intelligent musicianship, an instructive demonstration on the sparing use of field recordings as layers and a textbook example of how to mix and master minimal music effectively. ” – Fluid Radio “(Minamo) consistently creates beautiful music with compositional daring and instrumental aplomb. If you adjust your ear to Minamo’s peace and quiet, you’ll discover a whole world of bustling sound.” – Stylus
LP is limited to only 500 copies worldwide Minamo formed in 1999 and have released their music with 12k and Apestaartje. They have previously collaborated with the Swedish group Tape Lawrence English is a composer and media artist who operates the Room40 label and has released his music on esteemed labels such as Touch, 12k, Digitalis, and Experimedia

Previous Faceplant releases have appeared on Bathethic, Night People, and Catholic Tapes
Pulse Emitter is the work of Portland, OR based cosmic synth master Daryl Groetsch. Since 2003 Groetsch has been creating his own synthesizer pads and patterns which drift through cosmic and nature settings. A veteran of the noise scene of the mid 2000s, the music has returned to something more melodic and layered in recent years. David Keenan has said “no one is making synth music that feels so organic, so rapturous and so ‘in tune’ with the contours of outer and inner space as Groetsch.” These are the first recordings from Pulse Emitter on Immune. A new full length album will follow on Immune later this year. Date Palms is Gregg Kowalsky & Marielle Jakobsons from Oakland, CA. The duo began with a mutual interest in Carnatic and Hindustani LPs. Their debut album Of Psalms (Root Strata, 2010) was a statement in psychedelic minimalism driven by distorted, repetitive bass patterns. Their second album Honey Devash (Mexican Summer, 2011) was described by Aquarius Records as “a heady hybrid of spiritual Eastern jazz and rockish psych extrapolation”. Their first recording for Immune - “Night RIding The Skyline” is the soundtrack to a slow burning, low riding nighttime drive down the Pacific Coast Highway. Violin, bass, tanpura, Fender Rhodes and analog synths lead the way. Follow us. Justin Wright’s Expo 70 project has been pushing experimental, drone and Kosmiche Musik to new realms for nearly a decade now. Constant touring and two critically acclaimed albums released on Immune have helped bring his name to the forefront of modern drone and Kosmiche Musik. The recording presented on this Record Store Day release was laid down in January of this year and features Wright on guitar joined by Mike Vera on percussion and Aaron Osborne on bass, showcasing a much fuller, heavier, and doomy sound for Expo 70. The music was prepared for a local vintage fashion show this past November, presented now here to showcase the trio line-up that has been performing out so far this year. Faceplant is the solo work of Aaron Coyes (Peaking Lights, Rahdunes), described as his “solo modular hessian noise trance project”. Using his massive arsenal of home-made electronics and modular synths Coyes creates propulsive psych beats with a fractured dub/techno vibe. As Norman Records put it : “a total monged out electro vibe like Herbie Hancock on downers, with dubby swooshes and a repetitive melody.”

This is the first time that any material by Boston Spaceships has been available outside of the US in anything other than import, and this collection selects the very best nuggets from their brief but productive career brought together in succinct form. Between 2008-2011, Boston Spaceships released five albums, beginning with Brown Submarine, a pop punk album made by guys who've worn out the grooves on their Cheap Trick, Alice Cooper, Wire and dBs record, and culminating in the 75-minute double-LP masterpiece, Let It Beard, one of the most ambitious, varied, sprawling, and yet entirely coherent records Pollard has ever made. Let It Bleed features a variety of sonic textures, in part courtesy of a host of guest guitarists/ luminaries including Colin Newman (Wire), J. Mascis (Dinosaur Jr.) and Steve Wynn (Dream Syndicate). In 2011, Pollard decided he could never top Let It Beard, and broke up the band. Since then he's obviously been kept busy by the Guided By Voices reunion and the unexpected fruits thereof (three albums in one year!). All the better, then, that fans outside the States now get to hear the pure rock gold of Boston Spaceships in its most refined form.
AHMED ABDUL-MALIK AND CHICK GANIMIAN OUD VIBRATIONS: EAST MEETS WEST WITH AHMED ABDUL-MALIK AND CHICK GANIMIAN CATALOGUE NO: FLAMECD03 FORMAT: CD PRICE: $15.99 LABEL: FINGERTIPS BARCODE: 809236180322 GENRE: WORLD PACKAGING: DIGI Track listing : (Ahmed-Abdul Malik) : 1. Oud Vibrations brings together two complete albums from the late 1950s, which sit at the meeting point of eastern and western cultures, instruments and styles. Featuring Ahmed Abdul-Malik’s super rare ‘East Meets West’, (an evocative tapestry of structured raga-styled music set off against some classic jazz horn breaks) and the rare debut album ‘Come With Me To The Casbah’ from Charles ‘Chick’ Ganimian (a hybrid of Armenian and American cultures that touched on rock ‘n’ roll with the single ‘Daddy Lolo’ as Ganim And The Asia Minors, which was a minor US radio hit.) Remastered and with sleevenotes written by MOJO magazine’s Dave Henderson, these vintage buried treasures from two unsung heroes of jazz create an intriguing set of sounds that should appeal to lovers of space age pop and exotica as well as jazz enthusiasts and fans of Yusef Lateef, Paul Horn, Alice Coltrane and Terry Riley. Ahmed Abdul-Malik’s ability to fuse Western Jazz with the driving rhythms created by his oud that seems almost sequenced, are startling. Ganimian’s swing phrasings added to his sensuous, evocative song structures make both of these sets landmark recordings, where two cultures clashed and the result was a supremely different kind of music.
FACTORY RECORDS BLACK MONDAY (THE LAST DAYS OF FACTORY) CATALOGUE NO: OZITDVD14 FORMAT: DVD PRICE: $20.99 LABEL: OZIT BARCODE: 811702013621 GENRE: INDIE PACKAGING: DIGI TRACKS: Bonus chapters on the DVD : 1. The Re-opening of FAC251 as nightclub. 2. The Making of The Anvil FAC73.
Black Monday – A Reportage Rockumentary, the last days of FAC251- The Factory Records office building. Running time approx 2 hours 40 minutes. NTSC Region 0 – all Region. Here’s the idea- early on a Monday morning in November 1992 a film crew get a phone call to say The Factory Records empire is about to go into receivership that very day. Being based just down the road from Factory’s palatial offices they get outside the building early and start quizzing people who are coming and going from the building like Tony Wilson, Rob Gretton, Alan Erasmus who all initially deny anything untoward is happening. As day turns into early evening it is finally announced that the Factory Records empire is no more and Tony Wilson does an interview on the pavement outside the Lass’O’Gowrie in Charles Street. The next section of the film is where the camera crew trawl through the four floors of the Factory Offices as they are being pulled to pieces, Happy Mondays and New Order posters and sleeves strewn around the floor in piles of rubbish, the £35,000 suspended table snapped in half by the Happy Mondays hanging by steel wires from the third floor ceiling. “In the beginning Factory Records was all run from a room in Alan Erasmus’s flat in Didsbury. By the end they had their famous art deco-palatial offices, One Charles St, FAC251, with the useless suspended table in the boardroom and MTV on all the time.

TERROR DANJAH - THE DARK CRAWLER LABEL: HYPERDUB 16TH OCTOBER CD: HDBCD016 /5055300331281/$18.99 Terror Danjah’s second Hyperdub album is ‘The Dark Crawler’, a well-paced and much more upfront and energetic journey through his musical world than his debut ‘Undeniable’. The album revolves around the 'Dark Crawler’ theme, a blistering grime track that pops up several times, vocalled by MC’s Riko Dan, Mayhem, Deadly and Saf One, and then lastly Trim and Kossie. That’s not to say the album is one dimensional or relentless. From the 'Dark Crawler' intro into the cartoonish horror soundtrack of ‘Mirror’s Edge’, which tricks you into thinking its just any dubstep tune, before scattering into Terror's signature broken kicks and claps. ‘Dark Gremlinz’ featuring D.O.K. is a classic peak-era asymmetric grime instrumental. The album then drops down into the 130ish speed of ‘Air Max 90’ featuring Champion, which builds from a soca-like drum drill stretching the rhythm to the point of collapse with a wonky synth, before concluding on a driving baseline house 4/4. The first 'Dark Crawler' vocal is next, with a ferocious performance from veteran Roll Deep MC Riko Dan, who drops bloodthirsty threats at a breakneck pace. Next, the tempo drops down again to the drunk funk of ‘Full Hundred’, with criss cross claps and a rasping bassline breaking down into live drumming and tight trap door edits. Things speed up a little again with the intricate 8 bar funky of ‘Rum Punch’, a hard drum tattoo rolling out over a heavy detuned bassline and intense bleeps. On the second 'Dark Crawler', mic duties are shared by Birmingham MC’s Mayhem , Deadly and Saf One. Their hard vocals contrast with lush styled R'n'B of ‘You Make Me Feel’ featuring Meleka. The album then rolls out into the galloping drums and smooth G-Funk synths of ‘Baby Oil’. Trim and Kossie drop the final ‘Dark Crawler’ vocal, with Trim dropping deadpan threats contesting with Kossie’s focussed hysteria. Next up ‘Delicately', with Ruby Lee Rider, starts in slow motion R'n'B mood, sweet Rhodes chords drift and bubble up as the track doubles up into dreamy drum and bass with a fluttering tabla keeping the time, and Ruby’s tender vocals tempering the pace and aggression. Overall, it’s a brilliant exercise in breathless rhythmic arousal. 'Moschino', on the other hand is a darker, chunkier and grimier mirror image to ‘Delicately’, switching up into a ferocious metallic riffage, before the album closes on an outro of 'Dark Crawler' again. Form, function, energy and talent fuse perfectly over ‘The Dark Crawler' s length. Enjoy the ride. TRACK LIST : 01. Dark Crawler Intro 02. Mirrors Edge ft Lex Envy 03. Dark Gremlinz ft D.O.K. 04. DIVA - MOON MOODS LABEL: CRITICAL HEIGHTS 16TH OCTOBER CD: CRITTER14CD / 809236131492 / $16.99 Moon Moods was written and recorded first on a tascam 8-track cassette recorder using bass, guitar, and various cheap and scavenged keyboards, samplers and effects. Wanting to clean up the muddiness of the sound, Diva reimagined these songs in the digital realm. Though still using bits and pieces from the cassette demos, she expands upon these, making Moon Moods much clearer and cleaner sounding than her previous work. Moon Moods is thematically as varied as its musical inspirations, combining songs about heartache with tunes containing references to mysticism, magic and the occult. In the production process she collaborated with her father, Bauhaus drummer Kevin Haskins, and also enlisted the help of veteran producer and mixer Nick Page as well as the legendary John Fryer (4AD, Mute, Nine Inch Nails). . She currently is involved in the goddess performance art group Babes and has shared tours with Ariel Pink, Os Mutantes, Sun Araw, M Geddes Gengras, Matthewdavid, and Mi Ami. Before deciding to focus mainly on her solo work Diva was a member of Pocahaunted, L.A. Ladies Choir, and blackblack. "a looping, psychedelic, big warm cauldron of molten nectar noise? Diva?s trippy grooves evoke a lighter, less masculine Sun Araw." Drowned in Sound 8/10 Tracks : 1. Wanna Get To Know You 2. Cyborg Sweetie 3. Uncoiled 4. Inverted Image 5. Smooth Ride 6. Recorded Live at the Hammerstein Ballroom Manhattan Centre 28th February 1999. Features 10 Singles of which no less than 9 being top 5 hit singles! As well as some previously unreleased songs. DVD in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound. Housed in an A5 Deluxe case, with two individual CD and DVD card sleeves, plus a full colour booklet. Encore is a live album recorded on 28th February 1999 at the Hammerstein Ballroom Manhattan Centre, New York, an edited version of a televised concert called Encore. It featured a live concert which had been filmed especially for the VH-1 channel. Throughout the concert Summer performs some of her biggest hits both from the 1970s disco era through to the 1980s. The song "No More Tears (Enough Is Enough)," originally a duet with Barbra Streisand, is performed with Australian singer Tina Arena. The song was one of the concerts highlights, earning enthusiastic applause from the audience. Another standout moment comes when Donna tells the story of how she wrote "Dim All the Lights" for Rod Stewart, but at the last minute decided to keep it for herself. Donna then performs the first half of the song the way she imagines Stewart might have sung it, and finishes it in the style she originally recorded it. BRAINFEEDER 12" RELEASE FOR OCTOBER 16TH LAPALUX SOME OTHER TIME Cat #: BF032 Format: 12” Barcode: 5021392767161 Box Lot: 20 Label: Brainfeeder Packaging: 3mm vinyl sleeve, 180g vinyl Export: no export SRP: $11.99 Stuart Howard aka Lapalux returns with his second EP for Brainfeeder, a further, deeper journey into fractured emotion, tape experiments and mutating states of consciousness. “Quartz” is built around a stumbling music box refrain and filtered vocals. “Jaw Jackin’” is perhaps more propulsive but with no drop-off in surface interference. “Forgetting and Learning Again” features vocals from the wonderful Kerry Leatham, showing that Howard, for all the cutting edge sonics, can also fashion a great song. “Strangling You With The Cord” hits harder, a post-Dilla swing to the drum programming and dubbed out vocal samples. The EP is rounded out by “Close Call,” which twists a strange kind of cosmic soul jazz out of its chopped, squashed and stretched elements. There are few electronic producers out there who are more concerned with the minutiae of surface and texture than Lapalux, and still fewer who understand so well the deep effects that these textures can have upon the listener’s mood. In Lapalux’s productions nothing is left to chance. He makes swooningly beautiful and disorientating music that never sits still for more than a moment. 1. Quartz 2. Jaw Jackin' 3. Forgetting and Learning Again (feat. Kerry Leatham) 4. Strangling You With The Cord 5. Close Call / Chop Cuts

The Inversions “I Can’t Stand These Lonely Nights” b/w “Rub The Lamp” DAP 1062 Remember that Tropical delight of a B side, “ These Lonely Nights”, from that dynamically dynamite Bob & Gene picture sleeve 45?
Well, it’s BACK!
This time with a little love from
producer extraordinaire, part time Dap-King ringer, and full time Antibalas compatriot, Victor Axelrod (AKA Ticklah) – with a little help from his Kingston trio, The Inversions. Presenting: Bob & Gene featuring The Inversions “I Can’t Stand These Lonely Nights” b/w “Rub the Lamp” The A-Side has the same sweet and soulful vocals as the original “Lonely Nights”, but this time with enough bounce and sunshine to make you feel like you’re drinking out of a coconut on desert Island, with nothing but your favorite records and a Toucan named Duncan whose only joy in life is to fetch you delicious treats from the surrounding trees. Can you dig that Cool Breeze? What you’ll find on the flip of this 7inch pleasure cruise is The Inversions throwing down some serious musical heat with their interpretation of “ICSTLN”. But don’t let the title fool you, these boys don’t need a wish from a Genie to get people on their feet.
