Launched in San Antonio, Texas, Yippee Ki Yay Records was founded in the summer of 2014 with the goal of providing an artist-friendly, fun, and much-needed local platform for releasing a curated selection of garage, punk, and other rock-oriented music. A mixed catalog of Texas tunes soon took shape alongside an international roster from countries like Argentina, Canada, Sweden, and more from across the globe. Yippee Ki Yay has gained a following promoting not only its artists’ music, but also release parties in DIY spaces, regional caravan tours with Yippee Ki Yay artists, and a successful first showcase at the SXSW Festival in Austin, Texas in the spring of 2016. Now with Red Eye Worldwide set as a distributor, Yippee Ki Yay is planning a variety of to-be-announced full-length projects from Texas artists and international artists currently in their early stages of recording, mixing, and mastering.

SCENE CREAMERS
Now that we’ve moved definitively onward, in time if in no other significant fashion, it feels right to revisit a neglected chapter in the DC234 LP LIST: $18.98 history of DC’s storied music scene. Circa 2002–2003, dig the time of Scene Creamers! Formed by Michelle Mae and Ian Svenonius (the electric bass player and voice from Make Up) with guitarist Alex Minoff (Golden, Make Up), Scene Creamers intended to advance from Make Up’s minimalist punk-gospel, a much-imitated style now at an obvious endpoint. This meant the soul elements were set aside in favor of riff rock and funk-fueled psychedelia. Discarding the call-and-response vocal thrust, Ian Svenonius produced his most musical lyrics to date, conjuring life-size reflections of scenesters of all kinds: art students, trust fund kids, crusties, professionals and disenfranchised insiders, all of whom spoke to the changing times through a heavy-rolling, acid-wah kaleidoscope. “The Sound of Young America!” the PR trumpeted. Why, then, did Scene Creamers not record again? It will be recalled that they debuted in the immediate wake of the rock and roll era, which may have affected public perception, creating a subsequent gap in the band’s private perception. With the name Weird War in immediate reserve (Parliament-Funkadelic style!), the band moved in and moved on to make a couple further albums in this mode. While they built a separate discography, I Suck On That Emotion became an album unto itself. Today, in another era entirely, we’ve built a bridge back to there.
I SUCK ON THAT EMOTION
In 1992, Royal Trux returned to rock and to life itself, with their third, untitled album. Unlike the trippy folky NYC-cum-ESP vibes of their first, Self-titled LP, untitled hefted a heavier load, with the shadow of the blues and a dusty rock ‘n roll stomp becoming more evident in their ever-changing sound. The dark passage that bore Twin Infinitives is alluded to in songs like “Bloodflowers,” “Junkie Nurse,” and “Lightning Boxer,” while tracks like “Air, “Move” and “Sun On the Run” considered the positive aspects of living in the light for a change. This forward-looking approach would lead into areas that fans of the early Trux dissolute nature could never have predicted. But the best in this head-underwater approach to music was yet to come. Chicago’s music scene in the mid-90s suffered through unwanted ITstatus, owing in part to hype garnered by Liz Phair, Urge Overkill, Smashing Pumpkins and others of their vile ilk. Meanwhile, the underground was a field thick with soon-to-be-typecast post-rockers, plus the vets of T&G’s 80s era, jazzers and other types of improv/ freakout weirdos. Making records in town thus became a fun pursuit for Drag City, as any number of musicians might be perceived as being on-call to do a session for Smog, Edith Frost, Jim O’Rourke RIAN MURPHY & WILL OLDHAM and/or whoever else! “All Most Heaven” attempted Motown-esque assembly-line record making: Will Oldham’s fetchingly odd demos ALL MOST HEAVEN DC123 12˝ EP LIST: $12.98 were elaborately arranged by O’Rourke, who co-produced the basic tracks with Rian Murphy and a local wrecking crew, with a view to draw even more stars in to finish the project. When done, it was a most Left Banke-ish of Drag City records, without even a harpsichord in sight! The working title, “Murphy Does Oldham,” implied that this Murphy fellow would produce, which he did exclusively, with no vocal or instrumental parts contributed by the would-be Spector Jr. This didn’t keep him from hamming it up on the cover though! Built on the rusted out freak-blues and shuffling under-funk of untitled and edified by the relentless touring that followed, Royal Trux turned out an new album in short order — but this was no quick cash-in! Cats and Dogs reveled in an exploding creativity, drawing perverse inspiration from the grunge boom as well as then-current Black Crowes retro-Stones poses. With “Teeth,” “Turn of the Century,” and “Skywood Greenback Mantra” the Trux managed to write songs, make music and communicate a mood that laid beyond the reach of not only their chosen reference points, but also their contemporaries, in powerful, of-the-moment style. While it is rightly noted that the early 90s were a time of pronounced irony in the youth movement, Royal Trux managed to be jaded and cynical in an oddly disengenous manner, their 70s retro riffery laden sympathetically with signifiers of the harsh contemporary realities. Cats ROYAL TRUX and Dogs is still-pungent highlight of their outrageous arc through that time. CATS AND DOGS DC32 LP LIST: $20.98

Steady Holiday
After releasing not one but TWO albums on the same day in May, Islands are hitting the road for their second major tour of the year, with stops in Austin, New Orleans, Atlanta, Nashville, Denver and more. The tour will be supported by Alex Cameron and Steady Holiday and tickets are on sale now.
Steady Holiday is Dre Babinski. After playing in bands around LA for a few years, she longed for an outlet of her own, writing and recording in secret, developing a body of work about hidden desire itself. Under the Influence is her LP-as-coming-out-party, out now on Infinite Best (Mr Twin Sister, Ava Luna), produced by Gus Seyffert (The Black Keys, Beck).
The albums themselves are getting double the rave reviews; Magnet Magazine says the two albums are the bands "biggest statement yet"; Under the Radar says they "demonstrate the full gamut of his talents"; Pitchfork posits "The band is in top form here"; PopMatters notes the two new records are "a liberated, iconoclastic take on a dual set of genres." and many more.

NADA SURF PEACEFUL GHOSTS
Live With Deutsches Filmorchester Babelsberg
bark165 CD/LP+MP3
STREET DATE: OCTOBER 28, 2016 In the summer of 2015, Matthew Caws – the singer/guitarist of Nada Surf – was sitting at his kitchen table in Brooklyn frantically writing what would become Nada Surf’s seventh album, the critically acclaimed You Know Who You Are (2016), when an email arrived that would delight and terrify him. Once a year, FM4 in Austria chooses an artist for a national orchestral concert that’s broadcast across the country, and they reached out to Nada Surf asking if the band would like to be the next. Soon after receiving the FM4 request, the band secured a similar offer from Radio Eins in Berlin to perform live on air with the Babelsberg Film Orchestra, which derives its name from and is affiliated with the legendary Babelsberg Studios where notable films such as Metropolis, Dr. Mabuse and The Blue Angel were made.

“If we said yes, we'd have to choose a composer to write the parts and then decide which songs he or she should write for. We'd have to decide these things soon. Well, that was out of the question,” recalled Caws. “Deciding what kind of Thai curry take-away I should get that evening was about as distant a decision as I could imagine, while the small matters of which songs would go on the new Nada Surf record, who would mix them, what the album would be called and what the final verse of the song I was working on right then would be, loomed ahead. I would try and answer these questions after that curry, but making decisions about a concert months later was more than I could handle.” Instead of passing up the opportunities Nada Surf asked their good friend, multi-instrumentalist Martin Wenk, whose own band Calexico had done the FM4 Vienna Radio Symphony concert in 2013, to oversee the details with composer Max Knuth, while the band focused on putting the finishing touches on You Know Who You Are. For those of us unable to make it to Europe in June 2016 to listen to the fruits of this collaboration either in-person or over the airwaves, the band is making it available now with their album Peaceful Ghosts. On Peaceful Ghosts, the orchestrations cover a broad stylistic range, James Bond at one extreme and joy and wonder of Walt Disney at the other, with a whole range of surprises in between. Classics such as the delicate melancholy of “Blonde On Blonde” unfold to surprising new places with soaring countermelodies, while new favorites from You Know Who You Are, including “Rushing” and “Out of the Dark”, showcase the power and majesty of the original without losing the lyrical and musical subtlety that has become the hallmark of Nada Surf for the past twenty years.

Mannequin Pussy Romantic TE160
12” LP on Black Vinyl w/ Gold Foil-Stamped Jacket, Insert, DL Code CD Digipak w/ metallic gold ink RELEASE DATE :
O F
riginally conceived as a duo between childhood friends Marisa Dabice and Thanasi Paul, Mannequin Pussy expanded to a three-piece for its critically acclaimed debut, GP. The Village Voice proclaimed the band “more vital than ever” while Rolling Stone’s Rob Sheffield ranked it on his yearly Top 20, stating that GP was “the only album of 2014 I purchased in three formats.”
ollowing a move to Philadelphia, Mannequin Pussy has once again grown in numbers and strength. With the addition of Kaleen Reading (drums) and Colins Regisford (bass), the outfit has crafted Romantic, an instant classic that is its most cohesive, dynamic and addictive release to date. The quartet hasn’t lost its “all killer, no filler” tag though; Romantic’s 11 incredible tracks clock in at less than 20 minutes. And much like GP, the album shifts seamlessly back and forth between highly infectious, kinetic pop and no-holds-barred punk rock. However, the band has refined and ultimately solidified its songwriting with Romantic. The earworm melodies are bolstered by tsunami-sized hooks while the more aggressive, brain-caving numbers leave a wake of sonic destruction. Romantic is not only the sound of Mannequin Pussy hitting its stride; it’s a declaration of ascendancy. FOR FA NS OF : White Lung, Bully Screaming Females Tacocat, Speedy Or tiz Sleater-Kinney

After repeatedly being visited by a strange messenger in his dreams while on tour in the islands of Greece, Toby Pazner became consumed with a vision to tell the stories of The Olympians through music. Chosen by the gods as a messenger for not only his musical gifts, but for his unique position at the center of the Daptone family, Toby built a home studio from scratch and employed some of the top soul musicians in the world to help him breath life into this album. The result is a dramatic and cinematic journey to the outer limits of instrumental soul music, built on a foundation laid by the same craftsmen who’s bricks built the legacies of Sharon Jones, Lee Fields, Charles Bradley, The Budos Band, and Menahan Street Band, and painted with lush strings, harpsichord, harp and horns. The Olympians is destined to be the instrumental gem of the year. OVERVIEW "He is unmatchable in flow, delivery, and voice. Danny Brown has all the tools to be the greatest working rapper." -PITCHFORK “It’s the downward spiral, got me suicidal/ But too scared to do it so these pills will be the rifle.” That’s how Detroit rap phenom Danny Brown kicked off the second verse of the title track to his breakout 2011 mixtape XXX, and starting with track #1 of the astounding new album and Warp debut, Atrocity Exhibition, he picks up right where that record left off.

Atrocity Exhibition is one of the freshest and boldest-sounding rap albums in recent memory, a sonic swirl inspired by the work of Talking Heads and Joy Division that nonetheless sounds like nothing else from the past or present. Featuring contributions from producers like Evian Christ, Petite Noir (who also lends vocals to the world-weary clang of “Rolling Stone”), Black Milk, the Alchemist and frequent collaborator Paul White, the album is full of laser-beam guitars, gym-teacher whistles, creaking vocal samples, and air-raid drones. It is the most intriguing take on hallucinatory rap since the heady heights of Cold Vein or Madvillainy. Known for his wide range of collaborations, including everyone from Purity Ring, the Avalanches and Rustie to Schoolboy Q, E-40, and Ghostface Killah, Atrocity Exhibition sees a continuation of this carefully curated mix. Kelela lends her snaking vocals to the intriguingly murky “From the Ground,” Cypress Hill’s B-Real delivers “Get Hi”’s languid hook, and Earl Sweatshirt, Kendrick Lamar, and Ab-Soul all convene for the twinkling ominousness of album standout “Really Doe.” “When XXX came out, all of us were peers, and those were the three rappers who were the best,” Brown explains on having the star-packed trio appear on the track. “I felt like we were competitors, they made me want to step my game up. I wanted to put the hottest rappers in the game on there.” This album is a highly personal take on Brown’s ruminations on life and the changes that have occurred -and those that didn't -following the ups and downs of career success. Atrocity Exhibition makes for a thrilling third installment in the Danny Brown biopic, one not to be missed.

With ‘Honeymooon On Mars’ legendary post punk provocateurs The Pop Group open another chapter at a time when their iconoclastic contention is needed more than ever. It’s a record that finds the band unwaveringly incensed and resolute in their mutative sense of innovation, as Stewart elaborates: ‘it’s a stand against manufactured hate, a hypersonic journey into a dystopian future full of alien encounters and sci-fi lullabies’ Produced by dub titan Dennis Bovell, who worked on their seminal Y album debut, and Public Enemy / Bombsquad legendary producer Hank Shocklee, Honeymoon On Mars represents the band’s realisation of a dream twofold collaboration. Talking about working with The Pop Group, Shocklee said: "The Pop Group sound has a level of freedom, fun and creative musicianship in their recordings that is a special and rare find in today's world. Their uncompromising spirit to be themselves and not worry about fitting into a musical box, sets them apart.” Long-time collaborator Bovell added: “It’s been a great pleasure to be working with the guys again. They are truly beyond good and evil.” TRACKLISTING CD 1. Instant Halo 2. City of Eyes 3. Michael 13 4. War Inc. 5. Pure Ones 6. Little Town 7. Days Like These 8. Zipperface 9. Heaven? 10. THE AR-KAICS JUST MY LIFE b/w IT’S HER EYES WCK - 1 0 0 2 A/B WICK Records is back to the 45rpm format, that is, with a brand spankin' new release by Richmond Virginia’s own, The Ar-Kaics. If you’re for tunate enough to own one of their long out of print singles (all six sold out quickly, on various labels), or lucky enough to have seen one of their frantic live performances, then you’re already aware of how amazing this band is. For those not so familiar, here’s a brief introduction: If you like ‘60s garage rock, there is no contemporar y band that does a finer job at it. On their last trip up to NYC - after mar veling over the shocking variety of nightlife and sustenance options available to New Yorkers, yet absent in their native Virginia - the gang made their way over to the famed House Of Soul to put to tape the ver y tracks we humbly offer up here, on seven inches of recycled petroleum based wax. The A-side, “It’s Just My Life” is a guitar laden dance floor creeper, with just hint of late ‘60s Psychedelia added to taste. Flip it on over for “It’s Her Eyes”, a sparse ballad whose protagonist pleads how just one look at his myster y girl’s eyes has him pledging unconditional love. Kind of like reading your kid brother’s diar y and coming to the horrifying realization that he is cooler than you. “Take ‘em both together, one after the other, for maximum affect.” -Sugarman

Jacques Greene Afterglow / You Can’t Deny LuckyMe are proud to present ‘Afterglow’ the brand new single from Jacques Greene alongside fan favorite and summer hit single ‘You Can’t Deny’ Exclusive to vinyl, 12” features the extended versions of both ‘Afterglow’ and ‘You Can’t Deny’ It’s been two long years since we last heard new music from the Canadian artist and producer who helped revolutionize the palette of new dance music with his contemporary RnB influences. Now one of dance music’s most enigmatic young talents returns with the masterful ’Afterglow’ – an immediate, bright, soulful, techno record about the beauty of human connections - and this summer’s surprise club anthem ‘You Can’t Deny’. Born and raised in Montreal, now residing in Toronto via New York’s Lower East Side Jacques Greene broke out of a generation of independent electronic labels like Uno, 3024, Night Slugs and LuckyMe as a genre-defining artist (via 2011’s ’Another Girl’ – one of Pitchfork’s Songs of the Decade) who laid the blueprint for countless young producers and DJs inspired by the intersection of contemporary music: Hip Hop, RnB, House & Techno.
LM041S1
Greene’s music has a remarkable aptitude for expressing a range of broadcasts – bittersweet melancholia and pure euphoria. Drawn from micro inflections and palettes of gut wrenching-soul. Its brick-compressed Detroit-stabs serve to cut through club systems beneath intricate loops of electronics that interplay with disembodied, anthemic calls. With ‘Afterglow’ and ‘You Can’t Deny’, Jacques Greene declares himself back and renewed.

THADDEUS NELSON JR DANCE RECORD October 28, 2016 RELEASE INFO: Thaddeus Nelson Jr is a bassist, vocalist and producer born and raised and based in New York City. After quitting his job at a bowling alley in Times Square, Thaddeus Nelson Jr composed new-day disco and midnight anthems for his cheekily-christened Dance Record. Each song encapsulates a different part of the party. The afternoon rays emanating from “Disco Junky”, the rowdy energy of “Wild Inn” and the brooding midnight machinations of “Mr Moon” serve as journal entries for a sleepless, summer weekend spent dancing in NYC. Keep the peace, spread the love and dance with your fellow humans. Dance Record is available for soul brothers and sisters around the world via Styles Upon Styles. ARTIST BIO: Mike Nelson conjures memories from samples to dress his compositions in a dusted glow. His first release, “Out Of The Night”, emanated dusk in hip hop constructions and dubby house for Nicolas Jaar’s weblabel Other People, Issue #17. Mike co-wrote “CF01” as Soul Project on the compilation disc, Furnace Series 1, from Montreal’s Booma Collective. A year on, Mike debuts as Thaddeus Nelson Jr with Dance Record, a three track 12” that bounces stereo light across disco shadowplays for Styles Upon Styles.

MAUNO ROUGH MASTER If boredom really does breed creativity, then Nova Scotia weirdo pop-rock sophisticates Mauno must be four intensely bored individuals. “Halifax is a weird little town,” says frontman Nick Everett of the Canadian peninsula they call home, where life unfolds in a slow-drift of tiny moments never more than a stone’s throw from the sea. “At times, it’s really boring, which I find useful for writing songs—not being distracted. I arrived here on a failed hitch-hiking trip and just keep getting drawn back.” Rough Master, the group’s smart, intricate new album, has at least this in common with the city where it was forged. Full of familiar and charming shimmery guitar—and less-familiar, somewhat absurd stories written over rueful meals in empty apartments—Rough Master is a record you too will just keep getting drawn back into.

Formed in September 2014, Mauno – pronounced Mao-no, and named after bassist Eliza Niemi’s adamantly unmusical Finnish grandfather – have a wandering sound that refuses to be pinned down. Over the course of Rough Master it strays from twisting grunge-pop on ‘Again’, to a breezy lilt on ‘Champs’, to piano ambience (‘Pulses’) and string-accompanied haze (‘Reeling’) elsewhere. But then, what do you expect when Eliza has a background in classical cello and old R&B, while Nick boasts a record collection jammed with choral and folk? The result is an album that sounds like a windows-rolled-down summer road trip with the cast of Seinfeld. Elaine doesn’t want to listen to music, George is very focused on the road, Kramer is sporadically buzzing through his iPod listening to halfsongs from every genre possible, and Jerry is reading whilst eating spicy Cheetos. “It’s Seinfeld, but what the hell isn’t?” says Nick, adding they “pull a bit from everywhere. Completed by live drummer Adam White and live guitarist Scott Boudreau, Mauno’s Rough Master is a journal of “the kind of music that’s churning in our minds when we’re not focused on grocery lists.” Opener ‘Reeling’ sets the tone: a gentle lament at growing old that descends into a loose yet lush release before the chaos of ‘Manitoba’. ‘Nothing’ meanwhile is “about moving on a beautiful, sunny day. You’ve bought pizza, a case of beer and everything’s packed. As expected, none of your friends show up to help and you’re left schlepping boxes alone all day, getting a bit too drunk,” the band explains. “All along the Rue des Champs, on a sea of high-planed dreams,” sings Nick on ‘Champs’. “All my anger fell away and there I sat to think an hour or so on the war-torn colonnade.” It’s about enlightenment: “the feeling of a Eureka moment. You’re walking alone, your mind’s wandering, thinking of nothing in particular, then BAM. Suddenly you know more than you did a second before and your mind is whirling, and there’s no one around to tell. You’re seeing something intricate and beautiful for the first time and it’s completely contained within you.” Produced by Nick Everett, mixed by Alex Shepard, Rough Master is a record you suspect won’t be easily contained. Mauno were made in Halifax, but they’re ready to take on the planet and galaxies beyond. -Al Horner

THE COSMIC RANGE NEW LATITUDES Matthew “Doc” Dunn is a Toronto based artist, singer/songwriter and renowned multi-instrumentalist. His decade plus career has produced an astonishing volume of work that includes both his recent solo excursions and countless collaborations with peers including contemporary international music makers Bob Egan, J Mascis, Kevin Morby, Ayal Senior, Sunburned Hand of the Man, and Woods. Well noted as a frequent contributor to the prolific output of Matt Valentine and Erika Elder (MV/EE), and as a member of their “Golden Road”, it was in between his extensive touring with MV/EE that Dunn wrangled his own amorphous ensemble of local heads, The Transcendental Rodeo. The group expanded upon his lifelong embrace of “social music”, sometimes numbering twenty players, the band Dunn described as “both extremely fun and positively unwieldy” was documented in 2015’s posthumous and expansive box set Kanata. The band, which at the time of Kanata’s release was described as an “expanding head band” who dealt in “communal hillbilly raga”, wound down in 2011. Retreating from the group dynamic to concentrate on his own personal output, Doc released the deep study of feedback, wow and flutter that was 2012’s Tecumseh. Acoustic guitars, harmonica and free drumming acted as source material for his dub-wise tribute to the historical roots of Upper Canada. Within twelve months Matthew released the self-produced and self-performed All Is. A maximalist layering of organs, flutes, vibraphone and swung drums which together collaged an interstellar soundtrack reminiscent of spiritual musics old and new. It was the response from peers and followers to All Is that led Doc to form The Cosmic Range. Starting in late 2014 a core membership drawn from Toronto’s most enlightened music makers joined Doc on stage to reinterpret All Is’ themes into a blend of free jazz, world boogie and galactic funk. A year later in late 2015 The Cosmic Range entered the studio. With Kieran Adams (Diana), drums and electronics; Brandon Valdivia (NTWNTF/Lido Pimienta), congas and percussion; Mike “Muskox” Smith (Jennifer Castle, Sandro Perri), keys and bass; Jonathan Adjemian (Hoover Party), keys and synth; Max “Slim Twig” Turnbull, guitar and wah-wah; Andy Haas (John Zorn, Spermic Brotherhood), saxophone and electronics; Isla Craig (U.S. Girls, IC/JC/VC), voice; and Doc on organ, piano and vibraphone; the group came together to create in just two days their debut record New Latitudes. As New Latitudes opens with Morning, Ontario the listener can be forgiven if they fall into a state of trance as bells, vibes, piano and synths bring the calm, filling space and time with The Cosmic’s ode to infinity. This feeling of calm soon dissipates as the rhythm machined intro of the LP’s eponymous track prefaces The Cosmic Range in full flight. Heavy funk fades into the foreground with Andy Haas’ treated horn teleporting us to somewhere all together other. Organs establish the theme, a framework, a jumping off point to which Haas responds with his sax primally screaming into the fractured rhythms Adams and Valdivia explore. As Adjemian, Smith and Dunn provide the pulse, the drums roll into Turnbull’s no holds barred frenetic fuzz storm and when Haas returns to overblow his horn it feels like there is truly a riot going on. Downtown’s on fire.

At this point it’s clear that several lifetimes of music making exist within the assembled cast. Years of playing and listening. With many members having collaborated together for decades, an unspoken language has emerged. Taking cues from Miles Davis’ electric era, the group use form as an entry to improvisation, a place where one can explore without fear. You can hear it in Love II as warming up gives way to another exercise in funk. As Brandon Valdivia hits the shakers and Turnbull hits the wah, we hear Isla Craig introduce her voice - percussive and fully inside the groove. The band almost collapses from the intensity Craig ushers in with Adams rolling across bars; Isla finally catches her breath, the chase now over. You hear it in side two opener Barbara which is Adjemian and Smith doing what they do best, having performed and released records as a duo. Live improvised electronics, not machines, foreshadow our awaiting AI led dystopian future. As the record nears its close Kowboy brings the sound of joy. Following Dunn’s intro, Adjemian’s synth through squawk box solo sounds absolutely elated before handing the reins to Turnbull and Haas who clearly have no intent on calming the beast. Dual organs plateau and dovetail to a drone picked up by Craig whose voice brings us back to earth. Elemental. The record’s closer Look At What Our Love Has Done is the come down. Doc’s piano and Isla converse over a bed of spiritual percussion and drone bookending the record. The calm after the storm. If in fact Toronto is the city of the future as The Guardian recently stated, The Cosmic Range will surely be it’s house band. Recent live outings have proven that the band is as much of a force on stage as it is in the studio and collaborations are underway with a number of artists. As the world clamours to find the next Drake or Abel Tesfaye emerging from Toronto’s urban sprawl, it would be wise to take a sideways glance downtown toward The Cosmic Range where in this post-Kamasi world of 21st century jazz, New Latitudes have been drawn.

For a band acutely aware of our own futile existence and gradual demise on this planet, Fujiya & Miyagi sure know how to take that desolation and dance to it. Their second EP, from a series of three, is littered with thematic ruminations on scepticism, privilege, repetition, getting older, human beings’ place and significance in the world, and even the works of JG Ballard. Despite a mild undercurrent of bleakness and higher questioning, this EP finds the group in a very live band mode and, as ever, traversing the lines between disco and rock over the course of four songs.

MICHAEL MAYER & Michael Mayer is one of the leading German tastemakers in dance music and his DJ sets have influenced a generation (or two) of musicians and fans.As an artist, Mayer remains tirelessly motivated to DJing, in the studio or behind his desk at KOMPAKT, the label he co-owns. His recording career spans four albums, 23 EP’s, nearly 170 remixes and the legendary DJ mixes for fabric and Immer. ‘&’ is his third full-length, a passionate and personal album that speaks as broadly as his DJ sets - embracing his genre-busting love for music, rhythm and atmosphere – and the dancefloor in front of him. ‘&’ is the rare manifest of an established artist who is willing to risk it all and challenge himself, and the world around
him. 12 tracks, 12 single narratives coming from a group of very individual minds orchestrated by Michael Mayer - the DJ, artist, A&R but most importantly, obsessed music lover. Michael describes the process of curating and creating ‘&’ as a constant battle between his three alter egos but “the obsessed music lover has had the final say.” As diverse as they are, all the tracks that result from this long and winding road create a cohesive story and present the elasticity of Mayer’s musical galaxy. Michael gladly leaves it to the rest of the scene to discuss the different grey shapes of club culture. For him there is only one club culture – a playful and open-minded one that’s easy to comprehend after you hear ‚&’.

PRESENTS
Keb Darge Presents The Best of Legendary Deep Funk About Northern soul boy, crate digger and tastemaker, Keb Darge is a name which needs no introduction to lovers of rare music the world over. His ‘Legendary Deep Funk’ night at Soho’s seminal strip club turned music venue Madame Jojo’s introduced obscure dance-floor soul music to an eager London club crowd, sparking a global appetite for raw, visceral funk. Keb’s search for rare ‘45s took him across the globe, obsessively searching dollar bins, private collections and in some cases, artists homes to discover hidden gems recorded by local bands on regional record labels and pressed in tiny quantities. The rarity of the music combined with Keb’s exquisite ear and DJ ability meant that these records quickly became highly collectible (not to mention expensive) and even made ‘deep funk’ a recognized genre all its own. Keb’s passion paved the way for the modern funk revival, spearheaded by bands like The New Mastersounds & Quantic, even hitting the pop charts with the likes of Mark Ronson. In 1997 BBE released the first of three compilation albums of ‘Legendary Deep Funk ’, among the first LPs issued by the label. Equally loved by fans and loathed by vinyl price-gougers, the music contained on these albums took the world by storm, offering a refreshing change from the same old well-loved funk tunes endlessly re-issued on cut-price comps. The music felt fresh, exciting, full of energy and more authentic than anything all but the most dedicated collectors had heard before. Fittingly enough, to celebrate BBE’s 20th year, we’ve asked Keb to select his greatest hits from the ‘Deep Funk’ series, presented on heavyweight vinyl, CD and digital formats. The compilation contains edits by Keb’s deep funk contemporaries Ian Wright & Kenny Dope, as well as standout tracks from over 20 years of ‘Legendary Deep Funk’. Key selling points: • Full press , radio & social media campaign • Tracks taken from the long out of print Legendary Deep Funk series featuring exclusive edits from Kenny Dope & Ian Wright • 2CD includes continuous DJ mix by Mr Thing • Part of an ongoing series of vinyl celebrating 20 years of BBE

Okzharp and Manthe Ribane return with their second EP ‘Tell Your Vision’, a call and response between Manthe’s vocals and Okzharp’s production. Both bring their unique energies to the mix, manifesting in a raw confidence of new moods and temperatures that were brought out from their first taste of touring and living on autopilot. The EP’s title is a reference to its opener, ‘Teleported’, which was created in Okzharp’s car on an exploratory drive through London and inspired by the art and energy they came across. The track opens with a ferocious bass line, with Manthe’s rumbling vocals rolling rhythmically over the top. She takes us with her as she lets the music possess her as if dancing; quickly spitting the vocals back out, urging the listener to “Tell your vision!”. A much more gentle and reflective turn comes on second track ‘B U’. Okzharp’s slow and soft lullaby melody and Manthe’s warm and inspiring lyrics tug at the heartstrings. In the upbeat and playful ‘Maybe This’, Manthe’s vocals flit between a hum that softly swells over the top of Okzharp’s spacey melody, into an energised and bouncing rap. The EP rounds off with the warm anthem ‘Piki Piki’, with the chorus sung in the South African Sepedi dialect. Okzharp’s long synth lines draw us in with Manthe’s vocals melting and blending into the track. ‘Piki Piki’ has an unmistakably positive vibe, which becomes emphasised when Manthe switches to English, with lyrics that advocate self-affirmation and self-love.

STREET DATE: 10 /28 / 2016 We can't stress enough the importance of finally releasing an EP by scene originator DJ Nervoso. This release features newer tracks alongside unreleased older (we should really say Classic) ones, demonstrating the level of perfection he attained early on. Nervoso is the main reason why DJ Marfox, DJ Firmeza and many others started deejaying and producing, hooked on his fiery DJ sets since they were barely in their teens, around 2001-2002. He is well known for a bare bones approach to rhythm, working the basic hypnotic feel of pounding drums to mesmerizing effect, in his permanent quest to make people move. His sound is meant to unite, not divide, the dancefloor. Even before he started producing, Nervoso was quick to perceive that some people were alienated in parties where Angolan kuduro got played, for the simple reason they didn't command the specific moves associated with the style or its variations. So his production focused on adapting the beats of this much-loved dance music, changing the codes for a more inclusive experience. Some call it techno.
> Limited first pressing > Long-awaited debut for DJ Nervoso, originator of the current Lisbon batida scene

NIAGARA São João Baptista EP Vinyl 12” / Digital Príncipe P017 TRACKLIST:
A1 – Asa A2 – IV B1 – Amarelo B2 – Laranja
$15.99 BOX LOT = 25
STREET DATE: 10 /28 / 2016 Niagara started 2016 firmly commited to their own Ascender label, having released a first 12" late in 2015. A string of stellar CDRs guaranteed their relevant (and private) output became available outside their studio. The consistency is such that it was no effort selecting 4 additional tracks to assemble a third EP on Príncipe. Opener "Asa" is strong on keys, suggests a cool jazz walkabout where the machines and other instruments seem to be jamming together without interference. This broadens the horizon of whoever thought they are a House band; As countless other dance tracks, "IV" is built around a steady kickdrum, supporting a succession of vibes hitting left and right, obeying only the illogical architecture of Niagara's sonic world; "Amarelo" is the longest track in the set. Very physical and expansive beats, a funky guitar groove, deep bass tones and it ends just like that! A cascading drum machine holds its own, then comes a wandering flute and passing waves as jets in the sky. Trippy and brilliant, "Laranja" changes coordinates and points to a fresh destination.
> Limited first pressing > New sonic horizons for the trio, subverting the already subverted house pattern they coined.

Artist: Joseph Hein Label: Yellow Year Title: AM Gold Item Number: YY007 UPC: 634457461475 List Price: 18.99 Genre: Folk / Indie Territory: Worldwide Vinyl Release: 10.28.16 Joseph Hein hails from the Palouse in eastern Washington State. With lush arrangements and warm distortion, he creates dreamy harmonious sounds with an energetic up-tempo rhythm influenced by songs of yesteryear’s AM country and R&B gold. He is often accompanied by an array of instruments including a trombone, a violin, keyboards and guitars that add to the band’s distinct style. Joseph Hein sings honestly about good times and the bad and the music bears witness to the road unkempt and a winding trail. Joseph grew up making music in the rural eastern WA region known as the Palouse. With that small town isolation the multi instrumentalist Joseph Hein gleaned from a range of influences and played with a tight knit group of kids in all sorts of bands that ranged from punk to electronic pop. The path continued into the DIY scene of Olympia, WA where that intensely creative place inspired further collaborations that continue today. He has released two official albums as a solo artist and is in the process of finishing his third. His most recently released album, "Following Fog", holds the energy and sounds of the places it was recorded: from a barn to a church, a garage, cabin, closet, and the span of eastern to western Washington state. It is truly inspired by the places it all took place, and marks a period of time. Between touring, recording and collaborating with others he hides out in the hills and plays his new bass.... SALES TEXT Parachute is Mélanie Pain’s 3rd album, one that defies gravity. From the first words there’s a startling contrast, an illusion of lightness, chiselled lyrics. Melanie has widened her horizons, decided to explore new territories and move towards the light. To deliberately lose her way and regain her equilibrium, Mélanie Pain made one of her dreams come true: working with Gael Rakotondrabe, pianist of the highly-respected Antony and the Johnsons (as well as CocoRosie). Parachute is entirely piano-based, deliberately no guitar was recorded. Mélanie has left her pop-folk influences far behind. The style is now hard to define – hybrid and modern, classical, almost aquatic. Darker and more intense, Mélanie explores her fears, and these demons produce wonders: the sweet violence of passing time (“On dirait”), dealing with mourning (“Dans une boîte”). Next comes light (“Pristine”): “Are you ready to burn until the very end?” Yes, a hundred times yes. Then the piano returns in full force (“Le mot”), the desire to shed your skin (“Là où l’été”) and its ode to being naked, a chic, organic invitation, both sensual and carnal: “You’ll find me there under a stone, you’ll find me naked, you’ll find me so far from yesterday, you won’t recognise me… any more”. Piano and percussion start (“Lèvres Rubis”), a declaration that only love can vanquish fear. All doubts evaporate. We know, we can feelLiset it – this disc has softly illuminated Mélanie’s life. It may also, song ARTIST Alea after song, listen after listen, illuminate yours too.

Liset Alea has the name of chance. Originating from Havana, she begins to study the voice with America Crespo, a Cuban opera legend known as the Callas of Cuba from 15 onwards. Later, she becomes the front woman of the electronic band Etro Anime, co-writes their first album which is released through V2. In 2012, she decides that Paris will be her new “home” and from then on will be touring extensively with Nouvelle Vague as a lead vocalist, with Yasmine Hamdan and Elodie Frégé (a chanson française major figure for whom she also co-writes) as an instrumentalist (bass, percussions, guitar). While not on the road she starts working on what will become “Heart-Headed”, her new album co-produced with Marc Collin. Her voice, reminiscent at times of Jennifer Charles (Elysian Fields), Marianne Faithfull or even a Cuban Lana del Rey, is set against string and flute arrangements, vintage synthesizers and urgent guitars. The first single “Hunter & Tiger”, heralds “Heart-Headed” as an album that comes straight from the heart but remains grounded in the early Rock’n’Roll era echoing Wanda Jackson’s Hard Headed woman.

The Hidden Cameras Home On Native Land The Hidden Cameras bring it back home to release their sixth studio album, Home On Native Land, marking the beginning of a new chapter for singer-songwriter Joel Gibb. An Americana ode to Gibb's native country, he returns to Canadian soil both physically and philosophically. Written and recorded over ten years by Joel Gibb, this seminal album once again sees Gibb assembling friends, bandmates and icons including Feist, Bahamas, Ron Sexsmith, Mary Margaret O'Hara, Rufus Wainwright, Neil Tennant and longtime collaborator and producer Don Kerr to accompany him on this adventure in revisionist history. On Home On Native Land, The Hidden Cameras explore the expansive musical landscape of the Canadian countryside delivering an album rich with feelings of lonesome cowboy blues and heartbreak to toe-tapping rhythms and campfire sing-a-longs. Each song is a journey beckoning the listener to follow - to gather 'round the fire, sing until you fall asleep and share the same dream. It's a place that you might not have been before but which feels like home. The Hidden Cameras borrows from the classic country songbook, reimagining soulful standards like "Dark End of the Street," and "Don't Make Promises" originally recorded by Tim Harden. "Log Driver's Waltz" is The Hidden Camera's cover of one of the most successful and beloved Canadian folk songs of all time. "He is the Boss of Me," is Gibb covering himself with a rerecording of an early 4-track demo from 2001's Ecce Homo, now given a full studio treatment. Transitioning into the genre with infectious melodies on the original tracks "Big Blue" and "Drunk Dancer's Waltz," with Home On Native Land, The Hidden Cameras reach into the past to find new ground, while singing playfully pointed lyrics oozing with hopefulness and sorrow.

Julian Jasper - 2AM, Chinatown/I Don’t Mind Street Date: Oct 28th, 2016
Track Listing
About:
Side A: 2AM, Chinatown
Side B: I Don’t Mind
Growing up along the San Diego coastline does strange things to a person, with its endless series of lifeguard towers that overlook a plague of red bodies and even redder tides, a seemingly endless parade of fascist bodies & underfed minds. It’s the kind of place that makes a young man want to drift. And so today Julian Jasper finds himself in Los Angeles, awash in a surreal trashed-out decadence and struggling to make sense of it all. His debut single is a Steely Dan for the 21st century, or maybe a lapsed Rundgren. Either way, Julian Jasper is the greatest double-J artist in the history of pop. Who was better? Jesus Jones? Jessie J? JJ Cale? It’s Julian Jasper, and Julian Jasper is here, and so the last Southern California century finally begins. "2AM, Chinatown," the A-side, sounds like Boz Scaggs on a dopamine bender, with Jasper distractedly strutting & bouncing from one disused phone booth to another looking for a connection. The B-side, "I Don’t Mind," effortlessly evokes an early morning in a beach town: the deserted streets, the closed-up burrito stands, the marine layer and its endless overcast coastal skies, terraces of bougainvillea, rhododendrons, and ice plant. The sound of someone talking to himself. Which is appropriate, because at the heart of the California dream is a loneliness, an ugly isolation, an iron fist behind the sunny smile. In the capital of eternal youth, fear will always run the town. And as long as American life remains something to escape from, Julian Jasper should have a bottomless pool of eager listeners.

LP limited edition of 500, in a gatefold sleeve, printed inner bag with full download included, 250 in cherry red and 250 in sea foam green. CD 5 panel fold out with an alternative take on the LP design. Y Proffwyd Dwyll is once again produced by Chris (Conan) Fielding, and is without doubt a whopping great slab of heaviness. Though MWWB may share sonic alliances with likes of Conan, Windhand and Yob, the many who tuned into their impressive debut have discovered they don’t stick to the usual tropes, and are a unique proposition, with a sound all their own. Down-tuned to ‘Z,’ the guitar tone is tar thick and the riffs massive and full of hooks ... of course. But with the soaring, multi textured vocals of Jessica Ball, they have added an extra dimension to what’s considered doom. It’s a combination which sounds at times startling and often beautiful. Like if Liz Fraser had fronted Kyuss or Sleep ... There’s nothing approaching the 30 minute epic of their debut’s ‘Nachthexen’ (though these six tracks all clock in around the eight or nine minute mark) but the arrangements are tighter and the vocal elements are considerably upped. Add to that a smattering of cello, some swirling moog wig outs, and you have a record that also invokes Hawkwind’s cosmic synthscapes, as well as a nod to the John Carpenter soundtracks that the band love. Side 1 Valmasque, Gallego, Y Proffwyd Dwyll. Side 2 Testudo, Osirian, Cithuula.

Listen - https://soundcloud.com/dirty-water-records/all-that-lovin ARCHIE AND THE BUNKERS is Emmett on (drums/vocals) and Cullen (organ/vocals). Formed in Cleveland, Ohio, in 2013, the teenaged brothers began recording music in their basement, self-producing their first two EPs with a raw garage-punk sound that draws heavily from diverse musical influences, ranging from jazz organ greats like Jimmy Smith, to punk icons Dead Boys ,The Stooges, The Screamers, The Damned, and more. Rock’n’roll that’s been peeled back to its raw foundation’, as Emmett describes it. Having played a number of high profile gigs in the USA, including support to The Sonics at the Beachland Ballroom in their home town, these kids are scorching hot and ready to break out, not just out of Cleveland, but internationally. ‘They have no pretention, no inhibition. They are just having so much fun with the music. They are mind-blowing players. And such nice kids. All That Lovin’, The Thin Man, The Moon and Sixpence, Mystery Lover, Mexican Garage, Sunglasses After Dark.

The Original 3 albums These albums were recorded and released between 1980 & 1982 in a “post 154” rush of activity. While all the albums bear the name Colin Newman they differ in that A-Z & Not To were recorded as “band” albums with Colin being joined by Wire’s Robert Grey, Mike Thorne (who also produced, as he had the first 3 Wire albums) & Desmond Simmons on A-Z and Robert, Desmond & Simon Gillham on Not To. provisionally entitled the singing fish was more an “actual” solo album in that everything was played by himself. Colin produced the latter 2 albums with Steve Parker engineering. The 2nd discs (included only with the CD versions) A–Z (disc 2), tracks 1–9 were recorded at Riverside Recordings, Chiswick, by Robert, Desmond and Colin on the same sessions as Robert and Colin’s contributions to the additional 7” given away with Wire’s 154. Track 10 is Mike and Colin playing the studio piano at the studio where A–Z was mixed, and 11 was recorded on the A–Z sessions. Both were on the flip side of the single “B”. Tracks 12–17 were recorded solo in Colin’s flat in West Norwood. provisionally entitled the singing fish (disc 2), tracks 1–4 were ‘fish with vocals,’ originally included on a free disc called CN1 that came with the CD re-release of provisionally entitled the singing fish / Not To. The vocals were added retrospectively (in 1984) and recorded by John Fryer in Blackwing. Track 5 prefaced the recording of provisionally entitled the singing fish and was recorded ‘solo’ in the same way as the album; it was the B-side to the single “Inventory”. The remaining tracks, with the exception of track 10, were recorded solo in Colin’s flat in West Norwood. Track 11 features a drum loop of Robert. We have no idea what the circumstance was for the recording of track 10, but it has been titled for what it is: a rare example of Soft Option (the band that played on Not To) just playing. Not To (disc 2) tracks 1–4 were recorded solo in West Norwood and are obvious precursors of their album counterparts. Tracks 14–21 were also recorded solo in West Norwood and supplied material for a concert at the Venue, while 5–13 were recorded solo in Gloucestershire, on Robert’s borrowed 4-track and were part of an attempt to write a follow-up to Not To. The final recording was made at Scorpio Sound (where all 3 orginal albums were recorded) and was the ‘second A-side’ to the single “We Means We Starts”/“Not To” and featured Simon, Charles Arthur & Linn drum programming by Scritti Politti’s Tom Morley.
