In one corner we have Sir Charles Bradley backed by the Salacious Sorcerers of Soulful-Doom, and undisputed pride of Staten Island - Daptone's beloved heavy metal enthusiasts, The Budos Band. Armed with a soulful, merciless version of Black Sabbath's classic ballad 'Changes' - you'd have a better chance in the ring with a hungry Mike Tyson on speed. In the other corner we have Sir Bradley, this time backed by old school cohorts, the Staten Island mercenaries of Funk, Dirt Rifle and the Bullets (the band responsible for such early Bradley hits as, 'This Love in't big enough For the both Of Us', and 'Now That I'm Gone'). The third artist in the epic All Saints label reissue project is perhaps the most well known. A massively important figure in the history of minimalism and ambient music, Budd emerged from the 60s classical avant-garde. Originally influenced by the likes of John Cage and Morton Feldman, he rebelled against the conceptual works of his peers to explore his own musical path of "existential prettiness". An early live tape caught the ear of Brian Eno who invited him to London to record his debut commercial release The Pavillion Of Dreams. Their sound is an explosive brew concocted from primitive, machine-like drumming, quicksilver synths, intricate bass lines and psychedelic biscuit tin guitar work. Recorded onto 24-track tape this was the first time the band had recorded in a real studio. A-side features Signifying Monkey, a loose decadent rocker and the pitch black noise OF Mystikum, whilst the B-side features a 15 minute sonic monster: Story of Lot was originally intended as the centre-piece of the album, but the motoric pulse at the base of the track sprouted a grotesque appetite for sounds. Generous amounts of boasting bass lines and opulent organs were fed to the mix, but this only amplified the unruly rhythm. The famed noisejockeys Lasse Marhaug and Erland Dahlen was sent for to tame the beast, but nothing could control the yeasty black mass. It was evident that Story of Lot would swallow the whole album if it wasn't put in a reservation of its own: A full 12" side on a separate release.

Angeline King and Derek See began The Bang Girl Group Revue (hereafter The Bang for short) in 2009, driven by their love of 1960's soul, girl group and beat music and style. The group became an immediate success on the live circuit with their reinvention of little known soul/ beat gems and a handful of original tunes, written in the style of the 1960's. While The Bang went through several early lineup changes (one of which was captured on the debut 45 RPM single "Another Notch On His belt" which quickly sold out), it gelled beautifully for the recording of their debut LP, "Soul Shangri-La". The album was recorded at a private all analog studio in the San Francisco bay area, and the group is proud of the fact that there is no digital processing of any sort used on the album. While The Bang would never deny that their music is based firmly in the 1960's, they have seen firsthand through live performance that it is a sound that spans generations and appeals to not only those who lived through the era and mod revivalists but also those in their teens and twenties who may be getting a first taste of the soul of this music. The Bang made a conscious decision to record our album using not only the technology of the era that their music is drawn from but also, more importantly, recorded it in a way that shows the strengths of the band. The ladies' vocals were all tracked together; the three of them gathered around two microphones (whoever was lead singer had her own mic while the backings where sang into the same mic). This is the way it was done, and it presents not only a complete performance but also the natural blend of the group. There are points where Angeline and Tisha Joy's harmonies are so close they sound as though they are one voice overdubbed! The music performed by the gentlemen was recorded by the band, together, in the same room. Nothing compares to the passion and heart that a group of musicians create when they are in the same room, making eye contact, watching physical communication. This is the root of the "magic" of the old recordings, and The Bang captures the heart and soul of the era with just enough of a contemporary edge.

"There are these quiet, yet expansive, moments in life when nothing is really going on, and I call them lulls," he told producer Allen Farmelo on their first meeting about possibly collaborating on the project. "I want to make an album that captures these amazing moments. I want to make music that expands time in the same way." Farmelo, fascinated by the elegance and beauty of the concept as well as it's obvious musical challenges - signed on immediately. The first month of "sessions" found the two mostly just discussing lulls. What made one moment a lull and another not? What did a lull sound or look like? Was there an arc to a lull? Were these recordings to be based on Lurie's specific memories, or meant to induce new lull states? Or both? The answer to that last question was the clincher, and they finally decided that the record must spring from Lurie's specific experiences and provide listeners with the possibility of entering their own lull state. The challenge was clear. Over the next few months, Lurie wrote at his piano and the compositions began to take shape. Farmelo helped translate the piano compositions onto "stations" he and Lurie set up in the studio, a technique Farmelo borrowed directly from Daniel Lanois. Each station would make a specific, and limited, set of sounds: a Fender Rhodes through effect pedals and amps, an upright piano processed with a unique tube overdrive unit and analog delay, Moog synth and Mellotron through an array of effect pedals, Lurie's drums tuned and mic'd exactingly, and - after much urging by Lurie - Farmelo's Rickenbacker guitar fingerpicked solely through a rare and unpredictable analog delay he had just acquired from Mikael Jorgensen of Wilco. Once dialed in, these stations stayed put. Another limitation the two set in place was that there would be little to no sonic manipulation at the mix stage. Farmelo says, "I wanted to push up the faders and hear the album." And so, despite sounding vast and cinematic, a simple recording of just a handful these stations is what you hear on Lulls. The resulting music is linear, starkly minimalist, and very slow to change, yet it manages to reach orchestral heights of layered complexity and then whittle itself down to a quiet, contemplative filtered-piano solo. Lulls is at once static and in constant motion, a quality that lends the album the strange feeling of expansive time. Simply named "Lull 1" through "Lull 8," the track names gives us no hint as to the memories on which Lurie might have based these compositions. This intentional omission achieves the album's other equally important goal of offering listeners an open invitation to enter their own, personal lull state through the music. Given a full listen, especially on a hi-fidelity system, this singular and ambitious album does exactly that.

'Fireflies' opens proceedings with floaty but viciously warping choral tones over rough, rolling Apache drums. The title track, 'Control' with its punchy squashed kicks and rolling claps, swaps between Detroit chords and tough drum workouts. Next up, 'Zero' is a rich and cinematic ambient interlude whilst the final track on side A, 'Violet' is reminscent of Art of Noise's 'Moments in Love', but given a hi-gloss rerub, before the shortened notes of the melody break into strange glottal shapes, with drums striking strange patterns around them. 'Challenger Deep' opens side B with trancey spiralling synth arppegios that are almost too intense to take in, until soft chords and a steady drum form a cushion underneath, shaping the track into some intensely futuristic trap music. 'Ultra' is a synapse snapping 808 trap track with jittering double time drums rich chords and sci-fi bleeps. 'Jupiter Ascent' seems to update 4Hero at their most prog sounding, mixing in all manner of organ sounds, rolling toms and vocal noises with timestretched jungle breaks. Final track 'Doom/Dream' is a glistening virtual paradise, an uneasy ambient comedown from the rush that just preceeded it.

The exuberant, widescreen electronic production alone is special. The songs thrust forward excitingly, all colourful bleeps and bass, and drums as informed by hip hop as dance music. Then Samuel starts to sing, and the music becomes truly startling. With a voice that's more Frank Ocean than James Blake, this 'wee gypsy,' as he describes himself, has a soulful tone so natural and unforced its absolutely thrilling. His debut EP for Technicolour, produced by Okzharp from Hyperdub's LV, takes in everything from slowed rave stabs, electronic urban blues, sexualised incantations and yearning soul. Samuel sounds like someone who'd more likely have come from the projects of New York than the nuns and gypsy camps of Ireland - but crucially, he doesn't sound like he's trying to. "I made the songs when it was late night/early morning,' he says, "when you have a bit of a swagger on and think that you can probs do a bit more than you can manage come the next morning. Mostly at our house in the forest and the wee stars were out and they became blaggy rave up stars and we made visuals to show this too.. So, stars are the main obsessive on here." If ever music has captured the sense of being young in a big city, thrusting out into a night full of promise, this is it. It's tempting to hear some of Samuel's pre-history in 'slimy gypsy camps' in the music's freedom, wildness and touch of devilment. Falling Star is somehow both restless and reflective, and as beautiful as electronic music comes. The wonderfully titled "Death Star Wonder" stomps along gloriously, layers of sub bass and an addictive kick driving glittering synths; a rich backdrop for Samuel's yearning vocal. This is London music at its finest. As Samuel says "hopefully I can line up the romance with the ragged bits and have that be a bit nice. It's a bit persistent, lonesome and fully thrilling in london, right?" It's not hard to tell that Samuel is a very special musician. Just play those opening bars.
