Redeye Label of the Month Q&A

How did you personally get started in the music industry?

Well if you want my work history… A&R at Atlantic and London records, the Lemonheads and Meat Puppets - I recommend Google. What really got me started was my father’s 78’s and my record player. And what really got the label started was the ethos of Di schord and the distribution of Touch and Go, the words of Joseph Bueys and let’s be real, the financial help from my grandmother.

What is the meaning behind the name for the label?

Speaks for itself.

How has the label changed since it started?

In every way but the below:

We are still a 50% profit share with our artists, we still only do single LP record agreements, meaning our artists choose to return, and we still do not care what anyone thinks.

Describe the general makeup of your team at the label.

We are all music nerds or people who spend too much money on records, too much time at shows, and too much time looking for records. There is always a record playing in our offices. Founded by a woman, Thrill Jockey has a staff of 7 spread between our Berlin and Chicago offices.

Is there a genre that you would consider to be the label’s “signature style,” or is it a mix? We focus entirely on the good shit.

How would you describe your overall ambitions and goals as a label from when you first started compared to now? In 1992 we wanted to release records that made us happy- that compel and inspire us. We want to realize our bands’ artistic vision and advocate for their position. In 2022 we want to release records that make us happy- that com pel and inspire us. We want to realize our bands’ artistic vision and advocate for their position. So far so good.

What is your stance on color vinyl? What’s the most unique color LP or overall packaging you’ve ever seen or released? We love LPs that sound good- we also like stuff that looks cool. How would you describe the average fan of the label? Not remotely average, always entirely unique.

Before working at the label did you have any experience playing in bands or making music of your own?

Ummm… I will let you decide. I was a member of an underground Chicago art movement called the Anti Proficiency League- less practice more concepts. If you dared to join the movement you were issued a deed for intellectual property. I played accordion in the Rash who played one show at the Empty Bottle and recorded a record in 35 minutes with John McEntire and Sam Prekop, it was terribly fun- they could not stop laughing.

After that triumph I ventured out solo- well, I was the only human with The Pope and Pony show (myself, my dog lead vocals and my accordion). We played one show with Galatian de Beuf and I got all the money while my dog got all the attention.

In hindsight, one might say that I peaked when I started in NYC in Salmon Skin. I played drums (and I use that term very generously) with them when we opened for the Dust Devils. We even had some fresh merch made by dipping a piece of salmon in paint and slap ping it on our shirts.

How important are issues like mental health and social justice to you and the label?

We put our efforts behind personal and environmental causes that are important to both our bands and ourselves. We do not separate the label from ourselves. We do not hold back on our politics.

In your opinion, how important is it to be environmentally sustainable within the music industry these days?

It is very important and nearly impossible if we are honest. We have raised money for many environmental organizations and consciously commit to best personal practices, but as a company we cannot ignore that LPs are a petroleum product. There is no way around it- and they are heavy and bulky to ship. It is not a very green business, unless you are all digital. So, we love the earth and do what we can to offset our records, but the truth is, if I’m being brutally honest: we love the Earth, but not as much as we love records. I suppose as physical sales decline we get greener… always look on the bright side of life (insert your own whistle now).

What in your opinion has been the biggest change in the mu sic industry from when you first started compared to now?

I really try not to think about the Music Industry. We prefer to focus on the art of music.

They say our sun will explode in about 5 billion years or so- how would you like the label to be remembered?

In that context, all I can think of is “remembered” by whom? We are just grateful for all the stores that remember to order our new releases, and both support and share records that make us happy to be alive.

On July 13, 2006 the Drive-By Truckers set up shop at Plan 9 Records in Richmond, VA. It was the 25th Anniversary of the store. The band performed to a packed house and played a blistering set of fan-favorites featuring the songs, “18 Wheels of Love”, “Let There Be Rock”, “Goddamn Lonely Love” and “Daddy’s Cup.” The performance was also set up to benefit the Bryan and Kathryn Harvey Family Memorial Endowment. The foundation provides, among other things, music scholarships in the Richmond area. Lead vocalist and songwriter, Patterson Hood ended up writing the song “Two Daughters and A Beautiful Wife” about Bryan Harvey and his family.

Following the release of this record on 2020 RSD Black Friday, this 3 LP set will be pressed on color vinyl for the first time. The updated packaging includes original artwork from acclaimed artist and long time collaborator, Wes Freed. Now available on CD for the first time as well.

What we have here are home and field recordings of The dB’s. Most of these tracks pre-date the release of Stands For DeciBels by two to three years and were the basis of the signing of the band to Albion Records (UK) in 1980. Some songs are being released to the public for the first time in this package.

Now, almost 30 years after a number of these tracks saw the light of day on Rhino Records, we find ourselves in the position of releasing the earliest of these selections from our archives to a whole new audience. It’s the first time most have been on vinyl.

The live recordings were found after months of Chris [Stamey] sifting through a trove of ancient cassettes, and we are glad to be able to include these key songs from those early years.

Released on vinyl for the first time for Record store day. ‘GHOSTS OF ROCK N ROLL’ is the fifth solo album from Men They Couldn’t Hang frontman Phil Odgers and is preceded by the digital single ‘The Serpent, The Maiden and The Bear’ which hit #5 in the OFFICIAL UK FOLK CHART in September 2021. Beginning as a collection of ukulele led demos, ‘GHOSTS OF ROCK N ROLL’ has endured a stormy birth and its final emergence represents the triumph of resilience over adversity. Originally funded via Pledge Music, the album was nearly strangled at birth by the collapse of Pledge Music in 2018 and the loss of the majority of fan investment. Despite this setback, all fan pledges were still fulfilled and the project relocated to Bandcamp just in time for the pandemic lockdown to prevent any further recording sessions with producer Jim Knight. Finally, the album inched forward over the summer of 2020 only to crash into the second lockdown and then the tragic loss of fellow TMTCH frontman Stefan Cush in February 2021. With such checkered history, ‘GHOSTS OF ROCK N ROLL’ seems an appropriate title and its combination of folky pop and melancholic twang, combined with an ethos of survival, memory and experience create a testament to a life spent sailing the sometimes treacherous waters of Rock and Roll. The vinyl album features guest appearances by Sid Griffin and Bobby Valentino and two extra tracks not available on the CD version. Sleeve design is by visual artist Aly fell and the vinyl album includes a limited edition art print pencil drawing of Cush and Swill giving it large on stage at

Bush Empire.

This is the 4th album from Deer Tick and a pivotal moment for the band. With a couple line up changes over the years they started to speed things up a bit on Divine Providence; not that they shed their blues tinged country rock sound entirely, but the album has an even split of fast stompers and mid-tempo country bar howls. The original 12 songs on the album are about as close as you can get to a beer drenched show with the band; the addition of the 5 songs from the Tim EP and the 12 bonus tracks of alternate versions, outtakes and rarities make for a close encounter with a lost weekend with the band. The original album was produced by Adam Landry and Justin Collins at Machines with Magnets in Pawtucket, Rhode Island and this edition was remastered by John Baldwin at John Baldwin Mastering.

Sunshine Only Sometimes: Archives Vol. 2, 1972–1975 continues Anthology Recordings’ excavation, and exploration, of southern singer, songwriter, and psychedelic serviceman Robert Lester Folsom’s bountiful archives. Recorded across Georgia in various bedrooms, a barn, and a motel room with a reelto-reel and a revolving cast of whip smart studio musicians in the first half of a dazed and confused decade, Sunshine Only Sometimes furthers Folsom’s place in the canon of long lost but eventually found independently spirited, high-flying American folk rock.

When Anthology’s reissue of Music and Dreams, the sole contemporaneous album released in 1976 by Folsom, surfaced in 2010, little else was known of Folsom’s nearly five-decade deep archive of unreleased demos and fully formed studio recordings. Born and raised in Adel, Georgia—both then, and now, a sleepy hamlet with a population of less than 5,000—Folsom was fortunate to be minded after extremely supportive parents. Exhibiting a precocious affinity for music, things went widescreen when he observed the same ferry from ‘cross the Mersey as many others of his generation, carrying the four musical moptops to their paradigm shifting appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show

Soon thereafter, Folsom began religiously absorbing every morsel of musical output The Fab Four offered, as well as that of their contemporaries. Yet, it wasn’t long before observation transformed into a motivation to create. Over the next several years, while employing ingenious, home brewed over-dubbing techniques with his “love at first sight,” a Sears 3440 two-track reel-to-reel tape recorder, Folsom served as the de facto producer/arranger for any and all scrappy garage band or aspiring singer songwriter in the radius of Adel. Abetted by his mobile recording unit, across a number of unusual locations, and assisted by guitarist and collaborator Hans VanBrackle, this period produced the bounty of Folsom’s self-penned compositions which make up Ode to a Rainy Day and Sunshine Only Sometimes. And eventually, this period of woodshedding led to the formation of his rural-tinged, progressive, southern rock outfit Abacus

Though carrying Folsom’s own singular sound and vision, Music and Dreams, in equal measure, chartered the seas of smooth West Coast AOR before the yachts to come, while tracing the distinctly Californian sound of Laurel Canyon singer-songwriter soft rock Americana, which tussled on the waters before the large vessels overtook the big blue. Folsom’s earlier compositions found on Sunshine Only Sometimes reflect a darker-hued mixture of mellow folk, downer vibes, and rural tones, revealing his talent for melody and hook was intact far before Music and Dreams, with a keen sense of introspection making the dark and light equally resonant.

“Exquisite Corpses” is the first full length album in over a decade from Johnette Napolitano, best known as lead vocalist, songwriter and bassist for the L.A. alternative rock trio Concrete Blonde, whose 90’s hit ‘Joey’ earned gold and platinum awards internationally.

Settled in to her own studio in the high desert of Southern California, the Joshua Tree Recording Company, she podcasts ‘Coffee & A Card’, musings on the Tarot and all things supernatural and continues to create music for film and television. Tripper, the Fruit Bats’ 2011 follow-up to The Ruminant Band, is more pared down, with bandleader Eric Johnson doing most of the legwork himself. Synthesizers and keyboard loops replace the knotted guitars. Atmospheric washes of sound replace the sunny, straightforward hooks. On songs like “The Fen,” instruments replace vocals entirely, sounding more like a clip from an orchestral movie soundtrack than the work of a rock band. The majority of the work was done by Johnson and producer Thom Monahan, resulting in a layered sound that stacks overdubbed harmonies onto combinations of pump organ, found sounds, acoustic guitar, and various bleeps and bloops. Whether he’s working alone or leading a full lineup, though, Johnson knows his way around a good pop hook, and Tripper’s best songs are rooted in catchy, sunny melodies that shine through their heavy wrapping paper. Proof that Johnson knows how to stretch his legs without losing his balance.

In his perpetual quest to discover new ways of perceiving the real, the French artist Yves Klein once declared that he wrote his name on the “far side of the sky.” In the six decades since, the shock of the original has gradually become a distant ideal. Tedious nostalgia and microwave immediacy have become commonplace. Shattering boundaries becomes more difficult when anything goes and nearly everything has been done.

But if a narrative through line exists throughout Jimmy Edgar’s work, it’s his gift at deconstructing convention, whether through sound design, fine art, or live performance. In an era increasingly bereft of surprise, the Detroit-bred iconoclast’s career has been refreshingly unpredictable; he’s an escape artist capable of wriggling out of any predictable trap or rote cliché, a fearless seeker eternally leaping into the void.

His latest release for Innovative Leisure, LIQUIDS HEAVEN, is a psychedelic canvas of future R&B, euphoric bass, mutant tear-the-club-up rap, foundation-splintering noise, and gossamer soul. On a surface level, it is a starburst of avant-garde fusion, collecting a diverse cast of eccentric geniuses and re-configuring them into an anthology of nü musique concrete. But as with all of his work, there is a deeper and subversive intent.

The record’s early gestation spawned from Jimmy’s explorations of “material” in the digital world. Despite their apparent intangibility, he realized that they do possess a certain physicality, in some sense. If the experiments in materiality conducted by Klein and other 20 th Century conceptual artists began by placing everyday objects in galleries, the new millennium calls for the next advancement. The album is part of Jimmy’s broader ambition to change belief and intention in the digital realm – a pseudo-invisible way to summon novel realities by infusing his ultra-sleek aesthetic into transformative conceptual art.

LIQUIDS HEAVEN is the ultimate culmination of the idea of “phases of matter.” Asking “what would liquid desire?”, Jimmy conceived the sculpture on the album cover. Depicting a surgical medicine cabinet with rubber tubes inside, the image simulates a heaven that liquid could enjoy and love – a fluid playground. The sound is its own mesomorphic fluorescent magma, all-powerful, holding the shape of its containers, infinitely evolving. Sculpture by invisible electronic air pressure.

Do not mistakenly believe, however, that LIQUIDS HEAVEN is merely a technicolor dream of ethereal abstractions. It bangs as hard as anything to ever bump from a subwoofer. Over a polychromatic blast of crunk, 10KCaash and Zelooperz bounce on “Everybody” like a rap rave inside a 31 st century space station. “Bite That 2” finds Trinidad James spitting flames over booty-shaking, wall-crumbling bass. On “Ya,” 645AR chirps over a metallic chassis of booming industrial funk.

But for all the high energy propulsion, there is a counter-balance of melancholic beauty. The album’s opener, “Euphoria” features a Liz Y2K vocal that levitates with plaintive longing. The Milk-aided “Dreams 1000000” sounds like the chimerical soundtrack to a manga utopia that needs to be imagined. Milk also appears on the finale, “Never Leave,” which captures a bittersweet sadness, the wistful emotion of the tide slipping away.

It would be more surprising if LIQUIDS HEAVEN wasn’t surprising. Jimmy’s career has been a series of fascinating left-turns. Signed to Warp Records as a teenage electronic music prodigy, his body of work needs a scholarly bibliography to properly assess. He’s recorded for the world’s most respected imprints (Warp, K7, Hotflush, Innovative Leisure and his own New Reality Now). Raised in Detroit, there have been stints soaking up inspiration in Berlin, Atlanta, Los Angeles, and New York. His list of close collaborators includes the most innovative musicians of the millennium, including Hudson Mohawke, Danny Brown, SOPHIE, DAWN, Mykki Blanco, Vince Staples, and several full projects with Machinedrum as J-E-T-S.

Most recently, he has become a prolific and celebrated artist in the digital art space, which has become an integral part of his canon. With the goal of expanding the possibilities of conceptual art, Jimmy has used digital and internet native files to create single pixel magenta artwork. Screenshots are likened to paint strokes, meme images are re-contextualized. Dyson vacuum cleaners are hermetically sealed in plexiglass.

Jimmy is currently exhibiting a solo show of his digital works at Los Angeles’ Vellum gallery. Another upcoming project features 100 digital images where he deconstructed a surgical operating room and photographed the parts in a studio on a non-glare acrylic floor. This radical approach has been applied to his new live show too – which is a conceptual performance where Edgar isn’t physically present. Instead, Maija Knapp, an experimental dancer performs in front of his abstract visual animations.

The genius of LIQUIDS HEAVEN is that for all its cerebral intent, it remains replete with raw and visceral emotion. Out of sadness comes courage. Water, liquid, and light evaporate, become transparent, disappear peacefully. Nothing less than the sound and look of liquid are transmuted into powerful new sculptures – which are best experienced at a high volume on the far side of the sky.

Lightnin’ Hopkins

Lightnin’ Hopkins is widely considered one of the great popular architects of the blues style that came be known as “country blues” and which proved to be huge influence on the future development of Rock ‘n’ Roll. “Mojo Hand” was one of Hopkins‘ signature tunes. Mixing his own style with Louisiana Creole and voodoo culture, the song ripples with an occult energy. This album, recorded for Fire Records, is especially interesting because it casts Hopkins in a more R&B-flavored environment. This obvious effort to get a hit takes for some excellent blues; moody and powerful performances play throughout. The Penguin Guide to Blues Recordings wrote that “Lightnin’ is focussed and businesslike and delivers a strong and varied sequence of songs; the bassist and drummer unobtrusive but very much there.”

Is it okay to call this album a departure? A Jungian descent into a darker psychological state? If the starkness of the cover art wasn’t enough of a harbinger, the edgier tone of Black Candy coupled with all this lyrical talk about gravediggers, lost boyfriends, ghosts and… pajama parties is enough to wonder just how close to the bonfire Beat Happening were willing to dance. It was around this time that Melody Maker opined that “Beat Happening are simply the greatest rock ‘n’ roll band in the world (with the exception of maybe of Half Japanese).”

To listen to Sarah Mary Chadwick's music is to be a quiet observer to her thoughts on love, death and mental health. Sometimes anguish bears itself in sullen, dreamy vs dreary moments, but more often torment manifests at the break of Chadwick's voice as she sings painfully vulnerable, self-aware lyrics.

Chadwick is a singer/songwriter and visual artist, based in Melbourne. After moving to Australia from New Zealand to pursue a career in music, Chadwick spent a decade fronting the grunge band Batrider. In 2012 she shifted focus to her now prolific solo career. Essentially Chadwick's work is basic reportage of events and observations from her own life, creating something exactly realised yet completely relateable. Chad wick's performance remains singular and complex as she simultaneous ly savors and is repelled by the podium that her creativity affords her, acknowledging that “it’s a position of power being on a microphone” and how “..it’s a desperate demand to be seen. It’s funny and really sad. These days, I just want to be an entertainer.''

I always write a lot so I love it when songs can find homes in the outside world. Track one 'Flipped It' was recorded in the "Me and Ennui" session, and I couldn't find a comfortable place for it on that record. Track Two 'All the things...' was recorded during the "Please Daddy" sessions, earlier that same year in 2019.

Bill Nace Through a Room

Bill Nace’s Through a Room represents a seismic pro gression from Both, his star tling 2020 debut solo LP for Drag City. Nace’s career has been defined by a relentless probing of ways to frame the complex menu of hu man emotions, and that the guitar has been his primary tool for exploring this terrain is of little consequence. On this new release, he also employs tapes, hurdy gurdy, doughnut pipe, quelle est belle, as well as his latest instrument of choice, taishōgoto. This is also, ultimately, insignificant. What matters is the discerning spirit which animates his work. The tracks are carefully built from loops and phrases that talk to each other, subsume one another, overlapping and crashing and diving and expanding and emerging into unimagined vistas. On the whole, the re cord offers a fascinating and engrossing chroni cle — a sequence of interrelated stories told by a temporally dislodged narrator. Blind ngonfi player Nkibi Albert had risen to fame in 1972 with his solo hit ‘Ah Lusialala’ and Balka Sound was created to bring the sound of Balka, a folk style from the Beembe people, to modern life and an international audience With its roots in slavery and colonialism rumba was dominating the music scene in Congo, while the philosophy of Balka Sound was to find its inspiration directly in local country life, to associate the modern and the traditional and to revive folk traditions that were dying Founder member Henri Nsika Nkaya explains, “it was intended to be an update, a unification and an internationalisation of Congolese cultures ”

In 1979, during a festival organised by the Centre Culturel Français, the band won a recording deal to release their first album: Le 1er son du Balka, Lusialala et ses amis, recorded in just one take Their success led to a second LP, Tu Kine Balka, recorded in Kinshasa in 1982. A third album in 1984, Afro Musik Creation, featured a more modern studio production sound Their songs drew from traditional folk tales and parables, life lessons and the damage caused by rural exodus to the cities By 1985, Balka Sound were working full time with residencies at Chez Tantine Clara in Brazzaville, a well known tourist venue, and the Frantel Cosmos Hotel

In 1991, political tensions were rising in the country; civil disobedience and threats of a military coup were followed by a civil war from 1993 to 1994. The band eventually regrouped and were invited to perform in 1996 at the Palais des Congrès for the Fête National Unfortunately, on the first day of new fighting in 1997, Balka Sound’s studio was looted and the band were forced to finally disperse

Sarathy Korwar returns with new album KALAK. The follow up to the politically charged, award-winning More Arriving is an Indo-futurist manifesto - in rhythmic step with the past and the present, it sets out to describe a route forward. It celebrates a rich South Asian culture of music and literature, which resonates with spirituality and community, while envisaging a better future from those building blocks.

Recorded at Real World Studios with meticulous production by New York electronic musician, DJ and producer Photay, who translates these communal rhythms and practices into a timeless and groundbreaking electronic record. There’s a spirituality and warmth at play in the polyrhythms, group vocals and melodic flourishes.

The KALAK rhythm is the fulcrum upon which the 11-track project balances. After an intense lockdown induced period of reflection and meticulous note-making, Korwar boiled this down to the circular KALAK symbol which he then presented to his band before recording began. With the symbol projected on the walls in order to de-code and improvise around, Korwar had utter faith in the musicians he’d assembled and conviction in the concept.

The final part of the KALAK project is realised in the cover artwork by New Delhi-based designer Sijya Gupta. Korwar and photographer friend Fabrice Bourgelle took a light sculpture of the KALAK symbol on a road trip around Southern India, through Chennai, Pondicherry and Auroville. The evocative shots appear on the cover of the various formats, with each one offering a different angle on the country, continent and culture that inspired the album.

The ground breaking, unique jazz/R&B/pop group Brian Auger & The Trinity were formed from the ashes of Long John Baldry’s and Brian Auger’s previous group bandThe Steampacket, an R&B Revue collective, which also featured a then barely known Rod Stewart and Julie Driscoll Adding the UKs then greatest soul/pop singer Julie Driscoll to this new collective meant that not only did the band have a unique, beautiful voice and face to front the group Driscoll also embodied everything about the 1960s fashionable It Girl; her sound, her clothes, hair styles and make up assured that nearly as many column inches were dedicated to her stylish demeanour as much as the band’s genre bending music.

The group were the one of the first too to intentionally set out to break down musical barriers Brian himself specifically stated in the sleeve notes for 1968s ‘Definitely What!’ album that his concept “lies along a straight line drawn between pop and jazz and aims at the ‘fusion’ of both elements” ‘Fusion’ at that time was not even a recognised musical term, reinforcing Auger’s credentials as an originator and innovator.

“Back then the jazz audiences were purists They really looked down on rock and pop,” he explains. “I had people cross the road when they saw me coming, I was persona non grata at Ronnie Scotts because of the music we were doing and the clothes we were wearing”.

Happily audiences of the time didn’t take the same dismissive approach, Julie Driscoll, Brian Auger & The Trinity toured the US and had exploded onto American TV screens as guests of The Monkees, and also scored hits across Europe's pop charts via the singles ‘This Wheels On Fire’ & ‘Save Me’ but simultaneously appeared on the UK’s ‘Top Of The Pops’ in the same month as headlining major European Jazz Festivals a feat no other act has equalled since

Between 1967 and ’70, Brian Auger experienced a four year run of unprecedented creativity 1967’s Open with Julie Driscoll, 1968’s Definitely What!, 1969’s Streetnoise again with Driscoll and 1970’s Befour taking the Hammond Organ in new directions with their thrilling fusuion fusion of club R&B, jazz and psychedelic cool, engaging both the underground and the mainstream, and bringing the group chart success in the UK and Europe. “I look back on my years with The Trinity as a period of discovery,” Auger concludes “I didn’t know what would happen or where it would take me but we were breaking down barriers and going someplace new.”

Fela Kuti (1938–1997) was a Nigerian musician, producer, arranger, political radical, outlaw and the originator of Afrobeat. A titanic musical and sociopolitical voice, Fela’s legacy spans decades and genres, touching on jazz, pop, funk, hip-hop, rock and beyond.

Afrodisiac is the fifth in the series of celebratory Fela 50th Anniversary reissues. Like its predecessors in the series, this double LP edition is on color vinyl; LP 1 is green marble and LP 2 is on red marble. The album will be wrapped in a gold foil OBI strip with a brief essay on the album and Fela’s global impact on music. The songs on Afrodisiac were tracks that Fela and the Nigeria 70 (Later Africa 70) re-recorded at Abbey Road Studios in 1972 after they had become hits in Nigeria. The best known song on the album, ‘Jeun Ko Ku’, is listed by its Pidgin title ‘Chop and Quench’ on this album. It’s a satire about gluttony and Fela’s first major hit across West Africa. ‘Chop and Quench’ means “eat and die” in Standard English.

Afrodisiac was first re-issued on vinyl in 2014 as part of the Fela Box Set #3 curated by Brian Eno. Eno played Afrodisiac for David Byrne and it was a huge influence on Talking Heads when they recorded Remain In Light -- there is a bonus track called ‘Fela’s Riff’ that nods heavily to the influence of hearing Afrodisiac and Fela’s music for the first time.

PANDA BEAR & SONIC BOOM RESET

OVERVIEW

Although the two are no strangers to each other’s music - Sonic Boom worked on Panda Bear’s acclaimed solo records Tomboy (2011) and Panda Bear Meets the Grim Reaper (2015) - Reset marks their first joint release. Inspired by Sonic Boom’s collection of ‘50s and ‘60s American doo-wop and rock-and-roll LPs, the songs of Reset are as catchy and bright as anything either Panda Bear or Sonic Boom have made in their own vaunted career and serve as a testament to the power of communion and collaboration.

Six years ago now, Sonic Boom left his home in England for Portugal, at least in part to be closer to Panda Bear. The unlikely pair met via MySpace nearly a decade before, when Panda Bear thanked Sonic Boom’s former band, Spacemen 3, in the liner notes for his solo classic, Person Pitch, prompting Sonic Boom to message him with gratitude of his own. They forged an enduring partnership, with Sonic Boom mixing and co-producing a spate of Panda Bear releases since 2011’s Tomboy; they worked especially closely on 2015’s Panda Bear Meets the Grim Reaper

Sonic Boom’s notion for Reset was simple enough: After lugging his records to Portugal, he slapped them on a turntable in a fresh space, renewing his fascination with old favorites he had not heard in years. There was the great early rock singer Eddie Cochran, for instance, or the stunning American harmonizers of The Everly Brothers. Something new struck him, too—the way the ornate intros to many of these standards felt largely like stage curtains, compelling in their own right even if they had very little to do with the hits that followed. Sonic Boom began crafting song-length loops from these preambles, twisting and bending the parts like scrap metal into chimeras. Panda Bear knew what to play and sing instantaneously and turned them into proper tunes.

The kernel of Reset emerged not long after international lockdowns began, so the chance to work together on these songs offered the medicine of communion amid isolation, plus a place to funnel the blues of the present and sublimate them into something else for future use. Reset is 40 minutes of strange light, fluorescing out from a particularly dark time. That is perhaps the album’s primary promise—to reckon with the not-infrequent hardships of reality and offer some way to some other side. If making Reset supplied temporary medicine for Panda Bear and Sonic Boom, it is now permanently so for the rest of us, a reminder that sometimes playing and singing along to old favorites with friends can be enough to make the world feel a bit better.

Originally released on the Concord label, this masterful 1978 meeting of jazz guitar giants has quietly become one of the most collectible albums of its era. Herb Ellis and Remo Palmier (a.k.a Palmieri) were contemporaries in the red-hot NYC jazz scene of the ‘40s, but they arrived at this recording through very different routes. Ellis’ reputation steadily grew as he went from being a sideman in the Glen Gray and Jimmy Dorsey orchestras to being a mainstay in the Oscar Peterson Trio in the ‘50s, and later playing in a guitar trio with Barney Kessel and Charlie Byrd. Palmier, on the other hand, got his career off to a blazing start, playing with Coleman Hawkins before appearing on seminal bebop sides (e.g. “Groovin’ High”) with Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie. But then, health issues intervened, and Palmier spent the next three decades or so working a staff job at CBS for The Arthur Godfrey Show. Finally, after the show was canceled, Palmier re-entered jazz circles but never really recorded much, which only makes Windflower that much more of a treasure. “Sublime” is the word that springs to our mind, but you can substitute your own superlative; backed by George Duvivier on bass and Ron Traxler on drums, Ellis and Palmier bring an organic sense of swing, beautifully-voiced chords, and lyrical lead lines to such fare as

Folks can argue if Steve Young’s debut Rock, Salt and Nails is the first “outlaw country” album, but there is no argument that it’s one of the best. Featuring a star-studded line-up of like-minded players like Gram Parsons, Gene Clark, James Burton, Chris Ethridge, and Bernie Leadon, this 1969 record starts out with Young’s impassioned interpretation of the O.V. Wright/Otis Redding classic “That’s How Strong My Love Is,” which offers an emphatic bookend to Parsons’ own country-soul masterpiece “Dark End of the Street,” recorded the same year with the Flying Burrito Brothers. The rest of the record (produced by Tommy Li Puma) is a beautifully-paced blend of covers and originals, highlighted by Young’s immortal “Seven Bridges Road,” memorably covered by The Eagles among many others. cursory listen to Brooklyn indie act Habibi's self-titled debut album would initially seem to suggest a straightforward punk approach to the classic girl group template. Front-loaded with sweetly catchy upbeat pop tracks like "I Got the Moves" and "Detroit Baby," Habibi's indie shimmy rhythms and reverb-heavy harmonies find the middle ground between the Shangri-Las and the Undertones in the same way the Vivian Girls did on their earliest work. The guitar lines are direct and no-frills, drummer Karen Isabel manages to play in a way that is equally powerful and understated, and the vocals are distant and eerie, whether delivered in a frantic rush solely by lead singer Rahill Jamalifard, as on spiky garage tracks like "Persepolis," or in a dreamy cloud of harmony by multiple bandmembers. Getting past the first few easily digestible girl group pop hits, it becomes clear that the true strength of Habibi lies in just how strange and haunted the songs can get. There's a spooky desperation in the slinky after-hours club narrative of "Let Me In" and a simmering anxiety lurking beneath what first appears to be a carefree tale of summer seduction on "Siin." Much like the Vaselines, Beat Happening, and Girls at Our Best!, Habibi tap into the very specific energy of a young band putting together its earliest songs, free from the self-consciousness and rules that can creep in and dull groups down once they become more established. Instead, the 11 songs that make up this perfectly brief album feel fresh and spirited even in their moments of occasional awkwardness or disjointedness. Habibi brought an explosive and celebratory fun to their self-titled 2014 debut. That brief collection was overflowing with bubblegum melodies, upbeat pop, and the kind of giddy excitement that bands only revel in during their earliest stages. Six years later, sophomore album Anywhere But Here retains some of that excitement, but sees the band expanding into moodier expression, more complex songwriting, and an expanded instrumentation that includes occasional Middle Eastern touches. This kind of progression was hinted at on the band's 2018 EP Cardamom Garden, which saw them incorporating Persian hand percussion and lyrics sung in Farsi into shadowy rock tunes. Anywhere But Here splits its track list between higher-energy power pop songs like the attitude-heavy "Misunderstood" and more simmering, downtempo slow burns like "Flowers." On the moodier songs, spindly surf-rock guitar leads blur into reverb-coated vocal harmonies. The relaxed pace and sun-dazed atmosphere of "Angel Eyes" sounds like the Allah-Las at their most subdued, but before long, Habibi calls on the jittery fire of their earliest material for the dancey garage pop of "Bad News." Both Habibi's pop-friendly and atmospheric sides grow on Anywhere But Here, with more direct hooks on songs like "Hate Everyone But You" and a daring willingness to explore outside of their known parameters on songs like album-closer "Come My Habibi." Along with auxiliary percussion from a tombak player, the song finds a droning riff stretching into a psychedelic workout, taking the band further out than they've ventured before. Being able to break new, more serious ground without losing any of the pop core that made the band so fun to begin with is the album's key strength. Anywhere But Here not only has some of Habibi's most adventurous songs, but also some of their best yet.

hristmas with The Smithereens” is more than a Christmastime cover album. This quartet does an impressive job of channeling the spirt of 1960s rock, and solidly interpreting each memorable tune. The band’s originals add a nice twist to the disc and are written with such ‘60s-savviness that without prior knowledge it would almost be difficult to decide which songs were covers and which were originals. Lead singer Pat DiNizio wraps his husky voice around a smartly selected collection of classic seasonal rockers such as “Run Rudolph Run” and “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree,” along with more obscure fare. It’s the latter that makes this such a delight, as the band tears into rugged reworkings of the Ramones’ “Merry Christmas (I Don’t Want to Fight Tonight),” the Who’s crunchy “Christmas” (from Tommy) and even a rare Beatles track grabbed from the Liverpool band’s ’60s fan club only discs.

Weather in happening. From the heart of Delhi, to Tangier Island. The burning redwood forests, the dying jet stream waters. It is happening to you and to me. We pump carbon dioxide and methane into the atmosphere by the gigaton as the cascading feedback loops of climate breakdown continue to destabilize the biosphere. Oh, the wind and rain. We have all lived it. Stunned by the unfathomable power of our Earth and a sinking derealization about our tenuous future.

Almanac Behind exists in this space. The title is both an anagram of Daniel Bachman’s name and a reference to the fact that rapid environmental changes have rendered traditional weather forecasting methods woefully unable to accurately predict our future. Over fifteen tracks, Almanac Behind guides the listener through natural disaster and its aftermath, via a series of field recordings by Bachman and his collaborators. The guitar, banjo, fiddle, and other instruments are presented in neutral modal tunings, avoiding conventional harmonic representations of mood and sentiment, and are often digitally altered in both subtle and obvious ways. At its core, Almanac Behind is powered by the sounds of the Earth, tones inherently familiar to the billions of people who have experienced extreme weather. It is an attempt to emotionally contend with and foster connection over a shared global experience.

“Barometric Cascade (Signal Collapse)” begins with wind blowing through front porch windchimes. Broken segments of cut and pasted slide guitar improvisations play over a tanpura like guitar drone. The slide guitar crackles out of a thin radio speaker, achieved by broadcasting the recording to a home radio via an FM transmitter. As the storm gathers, the radio signal collapses into squelching tones. Local NOAA weather radio, “8:35 PM KHB36 (Alter Course)” cuts through the static and relays a year’s worth of emergency weather broadcasts recorded by Bachman at his home in Banco, Va. The chaotic thumps and strums of a 12 string guitar warn of the events unfolding. An emergency broadcast plays over church hymns. The signal morphs into “Bow Echo/Wall Cloud,” a series of repeating audio patterns made from traditional Appalachian rain signs rendered into WAV files.

“Gust Front (The Waiting)” follows, with solo banjo playing an uneasy cadence as winds gather in tight mountain valleys. The storm begins almost instantly in “540 Supercell,” where a now driving banjo and frogs, recorded in the mill race behind Bachman’s house, are easily overtaken by waves of hissing rain and hail. “10:17 PM KHB36 (The Warned Area)” returns with an updated emergency alert of imminent flooding in the neighborhood. Disparate radio transmissions swell as the broadcast is overtaken by the rising water. All that remains when “Flood Stage” opens is repeating AM radio static, slowed 43 times to create a pulsing rhythmic pattern that drives through the entirety of the track. The same cut and paste technique used earlier is repeated here to create a buoyant slide guitar melody, like a dead log floating down a swollen river. The flood waters rise during “Inundation (The Blackout),” in which the sounds of all of Virginia’s major rivers at flood stage flow into one sonic stream. Tree limbs, pulled into the water, scream in high pitched wails. Electrical lines flail wildly as all sound condenses into a single point, then silence.

A match is lit in the darkness as “Wildfire (Smoke Over Old Rag)” begins. Here, Bachman has built a fire from field recordings, YouTube videos of Virginia wildfire responders, harmonium drone, and a beat created by rendering a photo of the sun setting behind Old Rag Mountain, red from West coast wildfire smoke, into a WAV file. “Think Before You Breathe” is audio of dying fire, significantly slowed to exaggerate its final gasps for air. The warbling guitar floats to great heights with the smoke, consistently interrupted by glitches and abrupt pitch drops. “3:24 AM KHB36 (When The World’s On Fire)” breaks out of the relative calm with the drone of hand wound emergency radio crank underneath clips from the 2022 IPCC report, time signal radio broadcast, a smoke inhalation alert, and a performance of the Carter Family’s gospel tune “When The World’s On Fire” on slide guitar and accompaniment.

The tired and mournful banjo solo, “Daybreak (In The Awful Silence)” represents exhaustion and frustrated resignation during an extended power outage. “Grid Reactivation” comes suddenly, rushing down the lines to reach the transformer, powering on the A/C, radio, and other temporarily muted appliances. “Five Old Messages (MadCo Alert)” await. Now, as cleanup begins, comes “Recalibration/Normalization.” The cut and paste technique is repeated one final time to represent disorientation of facing a new reality in the aftermath of disaster. At its end, we again hear wind rustling the porch chimes, signaling storms on the horizon. Almanac Behind ends as it began, and can be played on a loop, mirroring the cyclicality of these weather patterns. The only thing that has changed is that the listener has now also experienced them. Weather is happening.

Followers of contemporary jazz might recognize Dezron for his bass work behind P h a r a o h S a n d e r s , L o u i s H a y e s , or R a v i C o l t r a n e Steady International Anthem listeners might remember him from the New York side of M a k a y a M c C r a v e n ' s Universal Beings. More recently we presented F o r c e M a j e u r e , his sublime duo record with harpist B r a n d e e Y o u n g e r which compiled the best of livestream performances from their Harlem apartment during the original covid lockdown That album, which came out in December of 2020, reflected the speed and feeling of the moment while somehow simultaneously distracting from the harsh reality of it. It also captured a very vulnerable, intimate, and real impression of Dezron on double bass, sharing his power and truth without abandon

ATALAYA, similarly, wasn’t processed in the lab, but rather, captured in the room. The realness factor is once again forefront in the sound, but the difference is in the energy and ambitions of the music, which reaches for the stratosphere. Lightning Bolt redefined what it means to be DIY. An utterly singular band in every way, unbridled creativity and energy propel them well past most categorical boundaries, the least of which is the boundary between band and audience. Theirs is an immersive experience – a sound so huge it can swallow us all. Earthly Delights is the metal album to Lightning Bolt’s genre-straddling discography, using the signature speed and volume reminiscent of past releases while centering around growling chords and monolithic rhythms commonly found in the foundations of metal. Amorphous songs feature a sort of gravitational pull, dragging listeners in and driving the pounding rhythms of Brian Chippendale into the brain until they are stuck in. Wielding the bass, Brian Gibson strays from his typical high-end runs, cramming thick chords between frantic beats, creating a brutal and grueling churn. Although this record is likely to wear you out with unrelenting heaviness and elongated mega-jamming, we think fans will find this reissue of Earthly Delights quite– delightful...

They are often called one of the loudest rock outfits in existence, both on records and on (or famously, off) the stage. Brian Gibson creates sounds that are unexpected and remarkably varied with his virtuosic bass playing and his inventive approach to the instrument, centered around melody rather than rhythm. The dizzying fury of Brian Chippendale’s drums twist from primal patterns into disorienting break beats as his distorted, and echoing vocals weave more melody into the mayhem. The impact that Lightning Bolt has had on underground music since its inception is immense, and remains pervasive beyond any genre tag that has been attached to them. The World

The Laughing Chimes is a musical project formed by teenage brothers Evan and Quinn Seurkamp based out of southeast Ohio. Living in a small, crumbling coal town on the brink of obscurity, Evan and Quinn wanted to bring to light some of their feelings and experiences from their time here. The project draws inspiration from American and British jangle pop from the 80s and 90s; establishing songs that blend enduring sounds with new melodies. The duo's 2020 album In This Town drew attention worldwide for its brilliantly timeless songs that could just as easily originated in Athens, GA or Dunedin, NZ as eastern Ohio. The overwhelmingly positive reception of In This Town inspired the brothers to work on their next set of tunes. Evan wrote "Laurel Heights" upon seeing a sign in West Virginia with those words and from there the idea of an EP started to take shape. More songs were written (some were discarded) and ﬁnally the brothers settled on the 6 tracks that comprise the Zoo Avenue EP, including the ﬁrst song written by Quinn.

From the deliciously paisley-tinged opener "Ice Cream Skies" through future anthem "Laurel Heights," the pastoral "Cats Go Car Watching" and the gorgeously melodic jangle of "Zoo Avenue" we can hear that Evan and Quinn have crafted a terriﬁcally assured follow-up to "In This Town," one that sharpens their sound and broadens their musical palette while retaining all of the considerable charm of their debut. They're already working on their next record and have recently expanded to a trio and started playing live shows, so we're beyond excited to see where they go next.

To remain in the moment is the gift of the artist. To search, again and again, just to land before a presence elemen tal and great that requires precise attention as it unfolds. MV Carbon and Charlemagne Palestine meet in that space between body, vibration and idea. They found each other through the eras to make visible and invisible forces present, to unite earth to ether. Two multidisciplinary creative forces that twist and challenge time by staying in the moment of its birth. They have done it before under many shapes. Their expression, unattached to conventions, plays with the realms of sound, performance and art using objects, space, light and energy. In this form of musical collaboration, they take the listener with and within through passages of resonant matter, strings, tones and whispers to a place where both here, nowhere and none exist.

MCVCVP turns sound into a stream. In four tracks, they give us a place to float, a deep pool of water. We listen to what is underneath. Continuity is the world we navigate, an eternal vibration with all its nuances. Inside the water, there’s no differ ence between playing and finding the truth —non contextual and fluid— that carries us through time. In MCVCVP, Carbon and Palestine open a window for us to stare into the vortex where sound lives: pianos in abandoned rooms, a mysterious voice with a dress, dusty tables and painted clouds, low light, blue walls, mirrors, echoes without a ghost. A fine line between mysteries that remain close, the wish to be dissolved in playful darkness. Each sound is alive and has a story that continues. Krill really kicked into gear in 2011, when Jonah Furman (Jon) graduated college and moved from Baltimore to Boston, where he joined Luke Pyenson (Lucky) and Aaron Ratoff (Alam) as they ﬁnished school. Carol Simms launched a successful solo career under the name ‘Kofi'. “I’m In Love With A Dreadlocks” was originally released on the Lovers Rock label, a fledgling reggae label formed by Dennis Bovell, John Kpiaye and producer Dennis Harris. Following on from the success of “Tape 1/Tape 2” and “Tape 3/Tape 4” on Soundway Records, Felbm delivers an extended vinyl edition of his sell-out 2021 cassette release “Elements of Nature”. The album includes obi strip, fold-out poster and 2 vinyl-only tracks.

In January 2021, Eelco Topper (Felbm) went into hermit mode by way of a two-week residency at Buitenplaats Doornburgh, a former monastery on the outskirts of his hometown of Utrecht, Netherlands. He had already intended to use only natural elements for inspiration, such as naturally-occurring textures and patterns, and the earthiness of acoustic instruments like singing bowls and a range of wooden percussion. On arrival, the contemplative architecture of the building and the peace of the surrounding landscapes energized Topper so much that these initial ideas blossomed into nearly 50 minutes of intimate 4-track cassette recordings.

Following the residency, Topper collaborated with a cast of local guest musicians on flute, saxophone and cello, infusing the original rhythmic foundation of percussion and acoustic guitar with a lush melodic backdrop. The resulting new release – simply titled ‘Elements of Nature’ - marries the fluttering melodies and lo-fi cassette sound of earlier Felbm releases with a new conceptual approach and more varied sonic toolkit. Here, Topper successfully preserves the joyful naïveté of the Tapes series while exploring sweeping new ground, resulting in a decisive step forward for Felbm as a composer, producer and artist.

Ingredient is the elegant collaboration of Toronto poets, composers, producers and dear friends Ian Daniel Kehoe and Luka Kuplowsky.

Their self-titled release is an enigmatic electronic avant pop record attuned to the micro and macro perspectives of the natural world. Ingredient is an album whose lyrics are more poem than lyric, and whose songs exist in a merger of house music, philosophically-minded lyricism and contemporary R&B.

One might recall electronic and art-pop luminaries such as Yukihiro Takahashi, The Blue Nile, and Arthur Russell, or connect it to contemporaries like Nite Jewel, Westerman and Blood Orange. A distinct world of dance, of questions, of secrecy and ultimate softness.

Home is the debut album from South Korean vocalist Song Yi Jeon and Brazilian guitarist Vinicius Gomes, two virtuosic musicians who come from completely different backgrounds and life experiences, yet speak one language: jazz. The two instantly connected while living in Switzerland. They quickly discovered a similar aesthetic sense that emphasizes interaction, storytelling, and communication, as well as common influences that include Brazilian choro music, Hermeto Pascoal, Norma Winstone, and contemporary jazz. But their biggest influence is family and home. As the record came together, both artists penned pieces inspired by significant family members and developed unique interpretations of songs by composers that reflect their diverse backgrounds: Carlos Aguirre, Dominguinhos, Keith Jarrett, and Jimmy Rowles. The music is infectious with mostly wordless vocals and intricate guitar playing, the duo’s sound is a rich interaction of modern jazz harmony, fascinating rhythms, and singable melodies that instantly catch your ear.

ACID KLAUS, the new collaborative solo project from songwriter producer and Northern England cult leg end, Adrian Flanagan (The Moonlandingz, International Teachers of Pop, Eccentronic Research Council & lots more) announces his debut concept album co produced with his music partner in the ERC, Dean Honer titled Step On My Travelator: The Imagined Career Trajectory of Superstar DJ & Dance Pop Producer, Melvin Harris which will be released on November 18 on Yard Act's ZEN F.C. label.

The album features contributions from Adrian’s long time collaborators and friends including actress, Maxine Peake, US musician and video director, Charlotte Kemp Muhl (Ghost of a Sabertooth Tiger), Maria Uzor from Sink Ya Teeth and the Bradford born pop noir singer (currently singing in The Specials), Hannah Hu who is joined on lap steel guitar on a track by Richard Hawley. The album is completed by a whole host of fresh and exciting artists (as well as the aforementioned Lieselot Elzinga) there's the enigmatic Queen Bee of the Calder Valley, solo artist, Bianca Eddleston who goes under the name Soft Focus and finally from South Wales (and the current talk of the South London scene), the incredible welsh language singer songwriter, Cat Rin.

DUET LAYERS

The Layers collections showcase compilations by 7K! Records, supporting a range of contemporary classical music Duet Layers pays tribute to the first editions of Piano Layers, String Layers, Ambient Layers and Wind Layers, honoring the layers thematic template, and challenging the artists to work together to find a common ground. The results of this are something new and unexpected.

The first edition to be pressed on vinyl, Duet Layers contains six duets. The result is a collaborative record written and performed by twelve of the most interesting artists from around the world, a sharing of sonic landscapes.

The release opens with a collaboration between the saxophonist Colin Stetson and pianist Hania Rani Divided equally between an astonishing piano line, synths, a trace of vocals and the stunning melody of the saxophone. The music finds its feet in silence and developing into a new world full of sounds. The second track slowly moves into an artistic axis held between Stefano Guzzetti’s piano and Neil Leitner’s (Echo Collective) viola paying tribute to the slow passage of time Following, the Polish cellist Dobrawa Czocher and British Berlin violinist & producer Simon Goff, meet with a dark and poignant track.

The second part of the album sees a collaboration between violinist Bryan Senti, who combines his experimentation with the colorful and sweet soundscape of Niklas Paschburg, playing the piano and accordion Duet Layers dives further into the unknown with a piece by avant garde and legendary New York trumpeter Peter Zummo and the Australian electronic producer Tilman Robinson. The release finally finds some relief in the collaboration between Laura Masotto’s viola and the electronic intuitions of Ryan Teague
