Redeye Label of the Month Q&A Learn more about our partners in our Monthly Label Spotlight
This Issue: Keith Abrahamsson, Co-Founder/President and Head of A&R
What’s the wildest marketing promotion you’ve ever worked on for any release? We haven’t pulled a ton of ‘wild’ marketing stunts, but one moment that sticks out (haunts me?) was when we did Connan Mockasin paper face masks for the audience at our 10 year show - they were eyeless and really fucking creepy… .and they were everywhere! If you had the budget, what would be your dream “outside-the-box” or “crossover” marketing campaign? How about a Cate Le Bon Super Bowl commercial? Just give her the reins and let her run wild with that outlandish budget…
How did you personally get started in the music industry? I bounced around a lot, just trying to figure it out - I interned at CMJ around 1997 and then started working at Bowery Ballroom when it first opened, being a stagehand, ringing out monitors, etc. Then I moved onto labels, interning, temping, etc. One of my first experiences was working the switchboard at BMG, which was a trip. I was at J records, RCA, and eventually landed at Astralwerks around 2001 where I worked for a project manager and the A&R director, and met my future partner, Andres, who was working in the production dept. When and where did the label begin? Mexican Summer started in earnest around 2007, but our first release (a 12” w/ Dungen) didn’t drop until Summer, 2008. The label started out of the first Kemado office in Manhattan at the Starrett Lehigh building on W.26th St. What is the meaning behind the name for the label? I pulled the name from a song I was into; I loved how it looked written, and thought it sounded beautiful, but also kind of foreboding. In other words, there’s no real meaning, but hopefully it sparks the imagination a little. . . How has the label changed since it started? Quite a bit - we started as a subscription service that had 4 of us working the releases. The volume was also insane back then - we probably dropped 25-30 releases one year. We quickly shed that model, opting to become a more ‘traditional’ label, and over time, honed a more realistic release slate, while growing our team and int’l footprint. Describe the general makeup of your team at the label. We have an A&R crew, creative direction/design, COO and operations, biz dev, commercial team (focused on both physical and digital), project management (across NY and London), Digital marketing, social media and production… Is the label tied to a specific geographical area? How is this reflected in your releases? We’re based in NY, and always have been, but I wouldn’t say there’s ever been an A&R strategy that reflects that. We’ve worked with more artists that aren’t from NY over the years. Where do you go to search for new music? Who or what has been a new find you’d like to rave about? Hard to say! Not one particular place - I’m getting older, so while I’m always continuing to listen, I’m also very clear that I need a crew w/ younger energy around me! So, I’d say music is sometimes coming from those folks, along with a smaller set of trusted sources… on top of the regular sleuthing I do. Is there a genre that you would consider to be the label’s “signature style,” or is it a mix? I think we just try to work with good people who almost always seem to have a skewed take on pop music. I wouldn’t say there’s any particular style or genre we look for, but the connective tissue across our catalog is made up of adventurous writers.
What is your stance on color vinyl? What’s the most unique color LP or overall packaging you’ve ever seen or released? We always look to offer a color variant for independent record stores, which seems to get people excited. We’ve also recently done some color editions to celebrate album anniversaries (No Joy, Huerco S. , Dungen, Robert Lester Folsom, and Weyes Blood). Forget about the vinyl boom - how are you and your label responding to the ever-increasing popularity of cassette tapes? CDs?? We never really stopped making either, to be honest, though it happens less often and in smaller quantities (particularly in the case of cassettes). If the project calls for it, we’re game to explore it… How would you describe the average fan of the label? Our varied release output from artists all over the world makes this a difficult question to answer (thankfully!). I would say that it’s a goal to continue broadening our reach and diversifying our releases to pull in as wide an audience as we can. Before working at the label did you have any experience playing in bands or making music of your own? I did - but let’s keep those bodies buried! Mostly very shitty punk and hardcore bands. In your opinion, how important is it to be environmentally sustainable within the music industry these days? Very important, but inherently difficult because we make vinyl. That said, we try to lessen that impact by keeping transport to a minimum and assembling/ printing/pressing in one place. Our paper/board stocks are FSC certified and inks/varnishes are water based. The pressing plant we work with produces and recycles vinyl compound - and offers the option to press using 100% recycled vinyl. All LPs are shipped in recycled cardboard and pallets are made of recycled paper. Lastly, I think our hope is that we’re releasing music that is not disposable, which will hopefully enjoy a long shelf life… How important are issues like mental health and social justice to you and the label? Both issues are hugely important to us. We’ve made sure to reflect this through our company culture, creating PTO policies that focus on personal health needs and forming an internal committee dedicated to taking steps towards supporting social justice inside our industry and community. What in your opinion has been the biggest change in the music industry from when you first started compared to now? Streaming for sure, but also just the expectation on the artist to ‘create content’. There are so many hoops to jump through, depending on how one chooses to engage. It feels a little like the wild west out there, which can be both exhilarating and overwhelming… If you had to start a new sub-label, what would it be called and what kind of music would it be geared towards? Loss Leaders — it’d just be comps of choice bargain bin soft rock/aor.
How would you describe your overall ambitions and goals as a label from when you first started compared to now? The goal remains the same, which is simply supporting art we believe in and (hopefully) putting out compelling records.
Want to shout out a personal favorite record store or retail establishment? Now’s your chance: Tough to choose, but will shout out a bunch here that have served us well over the years - End of an Ear, Freakbeat, Rocket Number Nine, Strictly Discs, Brooklyn Record Exchange, Academy, Rough Trade, Music Millenium - too many to list!
We know you can’t choose, but what’s been your favorite label release, and why? Impossible, but three that I go back to often: L’Rain (Fatigue), Jack Name (Magic Touch) and Jessica Pratt (Quiet Signs) - all records that give more with repeat listens.
They say our sun will explode in about 5 billion years or so- how would you like the label to be remembered? Being remembered is honestly not something I think of. I feel lucky to do what we’re doing now, and am grateful there’s an audience.

PRESS “One of the century’s most enigmatic pop stars” – Pitchfork “Paul’s idiosyncratic, tunnelling instincts conjured J Dilla, Daft Punk, D’Angelo, Prince; he was in the source code.” – The New Yorker “If BTSTU announced Paul as a producer to watch, Jasmine confirmed he was a once-in-a-generation talent – an overused phrase, to be sure, but an accurate one given how genuinely groundbreaking both singles are.” – The Guardian

Blessed with a formidable front woman in Brett Anderson, a guitar heroine in Allison Robertson, and a pummeling rhythm section in bassist Maya Ford and drummer Torry Castellano, The Donnas were one of the greatest punk bands of the ‘90s, male or female, bringing a uniquely hedonistic yet feminist viewpoint to the genre. Now, with the full cooperation of the band, Real Gone Music is reissuing their first four albums on vinyl, a quartet of pop-punk gems that were originally released on the Lookout! label. And we’re doing ‘em right, with band commentary and some sonic TLC. The first two records blasted through their first pressings…you’re gonna wanna move it for these two later Lookout! classics!
The DONNAS: get skintight
(Remastered Purple with Pink Swirl Vinyl Edition) 1999’s Get Skintight was The Donnas’ third album in three years, but, with such bangers as “I Didn’t Like You Anyway,” “You Don’t Wanna Call,” and “Hyperactive,” the girls show no sign of songwriting fatigue. Production by Steve and Jeff McDonald of Redd Kross adds a little bite to the songs, but they’re already showing their teeth—the wannabe boyfriend putdowns are as ferocious (“A boston baked bean is the size of your head/I heard you even wet your bed”) as they are funny, and the libidos are, um, lively. There’s also a Mötley Crüe cover (“Too Fast for Love”), but The Donnas’ songs are better. Remastered for vinyl by Mike Milchner at Sonic Vision, and reissued complete with a 4-page insert featuring the original insert plus band commentary. Purple with Pink Swirl vinyl!
SIDE ONE 1. Skintight 2. Hyperactive 3. You Don’t Wanna Call 4. Hook It Up 5. Doin’ Donuts 6. Searching the Streets 7. Party Action SIDE TWO 1. I Didn’t Like You Anyway 2. Get Outta My Room 3. Well Done 4. Get You Alone 5. Hot Boxin’ 6. Too Fast for Love 7. Zero
THE DONNAS: TURN 21 (Remastered Blue Ice Queen Vinyl Edition)
Yup, they’re legal now, and God help you if you try to keep up with them if they show up at your neighborhood local. Which they just might…cuz this 2001 album chronicles the highs and lows of being on tour and on the prowl with songs like “40 Boys in 40 Nights.” It also captures the full emergence of Allison Robertson as a guitar goddess, joining Angus Young as an officiant at the marriage of Gibson and Marshall. It’s no wonder, then, that this album led to The Donnas’ signing with Atlantic…these women-no-longer-girls are ready for the major leagues. Includes an LP-sized insert (instead of the original’s CD booklet) featuring added band commentary. Remastered for vinyl by Mike Milchner at Sonic Vision…and pressed in Blue “Ice Queen” vinyl!

STREET DATE: NOVEMBER 24, 2023 San Jose-based ska pop-punkers Smash Mouth went double platinum with their 1997 debut record Fush Yu Mang (the title came from Al Pacino slurring “F*** you, man” in the film Scarface) on the strength of their huge hit “Walkin’ on the Sun.” But the rest of the album is pretty rad ‘n’ rockin’, full of classic rock winks ‘n’ nods culminating in their skankin’ cover of War’s “Why Can’t We Be Friends.” And who hasn’t looked at a crowded bar through a pair of Beer Goggles? We’re giving this one a widespread LP release for the first time to commemorate the passing of vocalist Steve Harwell after a long illness… strawberry with black swirl vinyl, complete with inner sleeve featuring lyrics.

IGLOOGHOST CLEAR TAMEI / STEEL MOGU (LTD EDITION REPRESS) Release date: 11/24/23 Brainfeeder are repressing some more classic (and long sold-out) Iglooghost material from 2019 on limited edition grey marbled vinyl. Steel Mogu and Clear Tamei are Iglooghost’s back-to-back EP follow-ups to his acclaimed full-length debut Neō Wax Bloom. As ever, the releases are bundled with multimedia storyline material that feed into Iglooghost’s ever-expanding narrative - giving longtime fans their first glimpse into the primordial era of the Mamu dimension. Although paired in format, the dual EPs draw from different corners of Igloo’s influences. Steel Mogu is a hyperspeed collage of synthetic, trance-influenced synths contorting around violent, mutating 808s - whilst Clear Tamei channels lavish string quartets and melancholic, fictional classical instruments. The double features are set in Mamu, 3000 years prior to the events of Neō Wax Bloom. We are introduced to a young, see-through, god in-training named Tamei. Although gifted, he and his little cohorts resent their fate of becoming Grid Göds - and find themselves wound up in a hyperspeed, cross-temporal battle with a fleet of mysterious, round beings.

Deer Tick War Elephant 11/24/2023
OVERVIEW Deer Tick’s debut album, War Elephant, is back (even though it never went anywhere)! It is the same stellar album released in 2007 and then reissued by Partisan in 2008. This version of the album finds us returning to the original ’07 illustrated cover. This cover will become the new standard version of the album across all formats. The music and track listing remains the same. This limited edition of 2000 LPs is being pressed on Heavy Metal Grey vinyl (gun metal grey). John McCauley, III wrote, arranged, played, and recorded the album at the tender age of 21. The album is full of songs wiser and more nuanced than John should have been able to produce according to natural law. The words are deliberate and heartfelt, and follow the lead of singer/ songwriter heroes of John’s like Townes van Zandt, Neil Young and Richie Valens. And the album concludes with a cover of the 1962 GRAMMY® winning Song of the Year “What Kind of Fool Am I” made famous by Sammy Davis, Jr. It can safely be said that this debut album is a genre defying classic; it’s a hook filled barroom rock album that is as connected to 90’s Seattle catchy gloom as it is to left-of-the-dial late 80’s Minneapolis and 70’s Austin honky tonk.

Forever puts it all together for an enthralling ride down a fresh Lone Star highway. Produced by Adam Hill (Low Cut Connie, The Bo-Keys, Deer Tick, Don Bryant, Zeshan B) at American Recording Studios in Memphis, TN, Forever is a mix of youthful and defiant punk, rugged Red Dirt country, and vibrant Tejano. The full-length’s 10 songs blend emblematic rock ‘n’ roll with bold horns, violin, and a slather of twang reflecting where the band is from, where they’ve been and, eventually, where they’ll be headed. It’s regional and universal all the same.

In the time since the 2009 release of ...For the Whole World to See, happenings in the world of Death have occurred at warp speed. The raw rock ’n roll that the Hackney brothers made in the 1970s became a belated punk rock sensation, leading to shows and tours round the world, as well as two further compilations of old material. A documentary film was released in 2013 and an album of new Death music in 2015. Since a series of US dates in 2019, things have been relatively quiet externally, but evolution has continued, with this Death/Rough Francis split single representing the inauguration of a new phase in the Death history. Keeping it in the family and pointing toward the future has been a way of life for Death since the beginning. For this new recording, Bobby Hackney’s sons have joined Bobby and Dannis in the band they formed with their late brother David nearly 50 years ago. Urian, Julian and Bobby Jr. have made music under the name of Rough Francis since 2010, and will continue that journey while also making Death music old and new happen with their father and uncle. “World In Disguise” and “Haunted” are produced by Urian, who is gaining recognition as a drummer, artist and producer, playing with Converge, The Armed and even the Late Night with Seth Meyers 8-G Band in the last couple years, in addition to Rough Francis. Julian plays all the guitars in this new version of Death, replacing Bobbie Duncan, whose work standing in for David has been invaluable in the last decade-plus. “World In Disguise” was developed from a demo in the Death 70s archive — and more songs from that archive will be coming in the future, as part of the full-circle Hackney experience going forward. The ferocity and new sonic frontiers of this production bode well for the next era of Death history. “Haunted” presents the Rough Francis sound, driven just as powerfully as the parent band and inclined to the same depth of introspection that is a part of Death’s signature. Bobby Jr.’s vocals and lyrics are in turn, rawly aggro and ethereally philosophical, as the Rough Francis production sound encompasses the wide spectrum of their shared vision. Going forward, Death will take different forms live. Julian will join Bobby Sr. and Dannis for the traditional Death trio. For special appearances, they hope to bring the entire Hackney coalition to the live stage with a non-stop Rough Francis/Death show. That would allow for the Maximum Death version, with Urian joining Julian on guitars. Then there’s the Death Family Band, with Urian and Bobby Jr. joining the trio for extra vocals and other things. Death have already endured beyond the lifespan of a typical band. Drafting the next gen in now ensures that Death will continue into further unimagined realms beyond their already unbelievable position. Stay alert and keep a-knockin’!

Band: WHITE WILLOW Title: ”Ignis Fatuus (Remaster)” Label: Karisma Records Catalogue no: CD-KAR-231 / LP-KAR-231LE Barcode: 7090008312314 / 7090008313458 Format: CD / Ltd 2LP (Transp. Till He Arrives 10. Cryptomenysis 11. Sighs 12. John Dee’s Lament
OVERVIEW: Ignis Fatuus is the classic debut album from Norwegian prog legends White Willow. Originally released in the Spring of 1995, the album took the global progressive rock scene by storm. Fan letters started coming in from all over the world, and wonderful reviews from American and European music magazines kept flowing out of their fax machine. 5000 copies were quickly sold and soon the band was on a plane to California to perform at the 1995 Los Angeles Progfest, along with acts like Spock’s Beard, Ars Nova and Landberk. The songs on the album range from almost pure pastoral folk-rock, as on Snowfall and Till He Arrives, via out-and-out prog rock, as on John Dee’s Lament and Cryptomenysis (which featured a guest appearance from Ved Buens Ende’s Carl Michael Eide) to unusual experiments like the renaissanceinspired hymn Song, based on Christina Rossetti’s poem. The band didn’t at the time consider themselves a prog-rock band, more a folk-rock band that dabbled in symphonic arrangements. Nevertheless, the album has become a classic for prog connoisseurs. A FLYING FISH El Pez Que Voló - Act I Apollon Records / Gymnocal Industries Musical, avant-garde, rock opera
Format: Barcode: CD 7090039727163
OVERVIEW El Pez Que Volo (The Fish who Flew) is a musical quest to unearth the divine gem hidden within oneself. A cartoonish collection of desires, phobias, pathologies and virtues which are funnelled to create an ambivalent moral mishmash of East and West traditions. This zoomorphic, naïve & messianic hero's journey is infused with a psychedelic aura that invites us to dream the impossible... Act 1 - "The Nest" introduces Teezûck, the strange son of a bird and a fish who lives depressed in the dark depths of the sea. One magical night he receives a stellar gift: an oneiric vision, a call to face his inner fears and seek his true destiny. Themes such as overprotection, toxic victimhood, altered states, maturity and the flow between divinity & delusion are explored within this eclectic, fantasy-fueled extravaganza. Music, Orchestration, Recording, Editing and Mix by Râhoola (from Vitam Aeternam). Produced in Circodenso, Monterrey, Nuevo León, México between August 2014 and November 2022. Mastered in Psicofonia Studio by Charles A. Leal. MMMMM MMMMMMM 1. Sea Of Milk 2. Maze Crete 3. Sky Eye 4. A Long Road 5. Ages 6. Slow Moves 7. Tree Motion 8. Littlefolk 9. Mist 10. Hi Traveller
Mount Maxwell returns with another full-length journey into memory, melody, and geography - this time roaming beyond the BC environs of his previous records into a stranger, less knowable country. While still woozily nostalgic in the vein of Only Children and The People’s Forest, this outing feels more exploratory and wide ranging in scope, with a denser mixture of influences at play. The somnambulistic drift of Sea of Milk sets the stage with a series of wavering synth pulses that push us languidly toward land, eventually setting us down on the sands of Maze Crete, where a shadowy latticework of hand drums, flutes and synths await. From there we ascend to the aptly named Sky Eye, a rolling mixture of acoustic beats and analog string machines that gives us our first bird’s eye view of the album’s landscape. A Long Road pushes the acoustic instrumentation further, with shimmering tambourine marking time for a collection of hand drums and shakers, while Ages summons up an occult-like dream of glacial arpeggios and whispering synths. Slow Moves and Tree Motion float effortlessly along on beds of lazy congas and woodblocks before finally giving way to the title track - a heady juggernaut of distorted synths and trundling rhythms that propels us through the album’s second half like a locomotive through darkening hills. Drawing the record to a close, the gently repeating keyboard phrase of Mist blooms unexpectedly into a rainbow of human voices before evaporating into the oceanic swells of Hi Traveller. And there Littlefolk leaves us as it found us; adrift in a rolling sea. A founding member of Vancouver Island’s MMR Collective, and founder of the Canadian experimental electronic label Hotham Sound, artist and musician Jamie Tolagson (Mount Maxwell) currently lives and works in Vancouver, BC. His music is a unique blend of analog synths and acoustic instrumentation, calling to mind such artists as Boards of Canada, Bruce Langhorne, and Tangerine Dream. A preoccupation with childhood perception, utopian thinking, and the landscape of the Pacific Northwest runs through his work, which has been featured in Discorder Magazine, Tabs Out, Cassette Gods, Foxy Digitalis, Retromania, Free Form Freakout, Last FM, and NTS Radio. Littlefolk is his sixth album. Ret

My Animal (premiered at the 2023' Sundance Film Festival), screenplay written by Jae Matthews (Boy Harsher), tells the story of Heather, a strong, defiant young woman who lives in a rural northern town and desires to play on the local hockey team. She meets and falls deeply in love with Jonny, a figure skater new to the area. Their relationship flourishes despite Heather’s hidden personal struggles with her alcoholic mother, her unaccepted sexual orientation, and a familial curse which transforms her, her twin brothers, and her father into feral wolves once a month. Heather and Jonny’s tryst soon clashes against their small community, exposing the truth and prompting a passionate, violent night of personal transformation. Augustus Muller wrote and recorded the score at his home studio, primarily used hardware and analog synthesizers, in Northampton, MA. With director Jacqueline Castel, Muller pays homage to Klaus Schulze music for ‘Angst' and John Carpenter's 'Assault on Precinct 13' as major influences. Muller embarked on his composing career in 2019, crafting captivating scores for two short films for the adult film site, 'A Four Chambered Heart'. The scores, titled 'Machine Learning Experiments', were released in 2020, showcasing his talent with their innovative soundscapes. In 2023, Muller joined forces again with 'A Four Chambered Heart', composing two more scores, entitled 'Cellulosed Bodies'.

Almost ten years on this record still stands the test of time, every beat and electronic contortion bursting with character. The expressive waves of autotune and electro thump of previous single 'With Me' give way to the stuttering rhythms of 'Pearls' and the feather-light drip of 'Rice Rain'. Title track 'Wedding Bells' is the standout though, sultry voices and shiny, delicate production mixing with the thick low-end of 00s hip hop for infectious results. Potatohead People’s much lauded and instantly sold out third LP Mellow Fantasy is back with a very limited edition black & blue swirl vinyl repress. The album showcases the trademark instrumental prowess of the duo and their ease with the loose but hard-hitting drum style brought to the fore by Jay Dee’s influential productions, but goes well beyond basic boom bap bread and butter, with singer-centered R&B and uptempo bumps sharing the stage. On this album, Potatohead People have widened the frame of their progressive musical vision and deliver a far-reaching yet approachable set of moods and grooves. On Mellow Fantasy, they had some impressive inspiration. De La Soul immediately connected with “Baby Got Work,” a sophisticated slap that went through several iterations before settling into its ultimate form. Appropriately, the song’s diligent construction echoes the ethic of the grind in the clear-eyed, precisely dovetailed lyrics fans have come to expect from the Daisy Age don. Befitting Potatohead People’s origins as a hip-hop group, cameos from Illa J and Slum Village’s T3 on the summertime teaser “What It Feels Like” and Vancouver veteran Moka Only (the sassy, vanity take-down “Ungodly”) add to the unimpeachable rap bonafides. The hometown connections continue with Lotusland local Kapok slinging verses on a couple tracks and rising stars Kendra Dias and Clear Mortifee, who stake serious claims as names to watch with standout vocal turns on the low-slung neo-soul “Break Even” and the upcoming second single “Hidden Levels,” a high-flying house/future boogie hybrid. Following up their successful 2019 collabo “Single Life,” Bunnie makes her return to action with the group on “Kettle Boiling.” Ranging further, Reggie B, who broke on the scene with his lead on Onra’s “High Hopes,” shines on the optimistic bounce of “Bring The World A Little Closer.” Mellow Fantasy is Potatohead People’s most evolved collection yet, rooted in earthy low end but elevated, expansive and reaching new musical heights.

Highlights Finally, a re-issue of Potatohead People's bonafide classic second album Nick & Astro's Guide To The Galaxy - and on black & red splatter to boot. Comprised of Vancouver producers and multi-instrumentalists Nick Wisdom and Astrological, Canadian duo Potatohead People boast a number of noteworthy accolades thanks to a their signature sound drawing influences from 90's boom-bap, future soul, classic jazz, deep house and boogie/funk. Beginning with a series of EP's, including their landmark "Kosmichemusik" EP, Potatohead People's productions quickly made their way to artists like Illa J who tapped the duo to produce his now critically acclaimed self-titled album, as well as producers like Kaytranada (who co-produced Illa J's "Strippers" with the pair). Supporters such as Soulection, Nightmares on Wax, De La Soul, Pomo, DJ Spinna, Big Boi, and Phife Dawg have also played formidable roles in championing the sound of Potatohead People worldwide. Nick & Astro's Guide To The Galaxy (originally released May 11th 2018 on Bastard Jazz) showcases a leap forward in production chops, musicality, and songwriting for the duo. The first single "Quest For Love" "with its neck snapping drum break, lush rhodes chords, cosmic synths, guitar & horn flourishes and unexpected musical changeups bring in the hip-hop infected musicality the duo has become so loved for, while Nick & Astro collaborate vocally on top. "Morning Sun" featuring Danish vocalist (and Anderson.Paak collaborator) Nanna.B is in part a melancholy piece with knocking drums, an infectious bassline and a soulful, shimmering hook, while "Do My Thing" featuring Canadian singer Kapok and Illa J is a neck-snapping Hip-Hop joint perfect for the dancefloor. "Liftin' Up" featuring San Francisco's K-Maxx ventures into West Coast boogie territories, while the album's closer "Rituals" goes for a deeper more atmospheric electronic vibe.

12/01/23
180g milky-clear vinyl, gatefold jacket, printed inner-sleeve, download card included. Honed on the sounds of krautrock, post-punk, no wave, and drone, American instrumental trio Verstärker is a sound and a vision united in the quest for motorik space exploration. Following on from their sold-out 2015 debut ‘Aktivität’, which saw the band pick up a fast-growing reputation in the psych underground, Verstärker’s second album ‘Jenseits’ arrives on Fuzz Club. Five tracks spanning 45 minutes, ‘Jenseits’ is the band’s response to the modern dystopian world we now inhabit – taking on a heavier and even darker tone than what came before. “Everywhere, everything feels on the verge of collapse. We find our hope in the music and art. This is the future we are striving for.” On ‘Jenseits’, tightly-wound motorik basslines, hard-hitting percussion and effectsloaded guitars are set against bleak atmospheric drones in the rare moments the record’s fast-driving pace lets up. Talking about the record, guitarist J. Vitatoe explains: “Jenseits as a preposition means ‘beyond’ or ‘on the other side of’, and, as a noun, it means ‘the hereafter” or ‘the next world.’ This dual meaning is the concept that permeates the record. The motorik beat has always been about pushing towards the horizon, the sense of perpetual forward momentum. But eventually, you reach the breaking point and push through to the other side — going beyond the horizon. This is where we were trying to go sonically with this record — beyond.” Tracklist: 1) Ankunft 2) Ad Anum Ad Astra 3) Nachthimmel 4) Hinter dem Spiegel 5) Jenseits des Jenseits
Bonnacons Of Doom – Signs Rocket Recordings LP Frosted Clear Vinyl LAUNCH325
5056321672773
Traversing the everyday in 2023, the need for ritual catharsis only grows stronger. The need to lose oneself in a force bigger than ourselves, and to venture into inner space the better to sculpt armour for the battles outside. Luckily this is the job of Bonnacons of Doom, aural soothsayers and progenitors of Trans Pennine hypnotic music. ‘Signs’ - their second album for Rocket Recordings - marks both a portent of things to come, and a roadmap of the psychic pathways to survival. This masked troupe, subsumed to mystery and amassed from across the North of England, have stepped up their mission accordingly. Building on the intimidating intensity of their self-titled 2018 debut, this series of fiercely charged mantras and premonitory transmissions is possessed of a new level of communal intensity. The band’s choice of weapons- the monomaniacal intensity of the riff, the liberating binary spirit of electronics and the incantatory vocals of ceremonial leader Kate Smith - here coalesce into a metaphysical force which stands defiant of easy categorisation. Within these otherworldly manifestations lurks solace in a place where the transcendent power of heavy amplification, cosmically aligned sonic explorations and strange forces darker and more unknowable can coalesce to cathartic and redeeming effect. ‘Signs’ marks out a supernatural landscape where ancient and modern, earthly and alien congregate in the eternal now, whilst Bonnacons Of Doom transcend era to light a path for the future. 1. Very limited vinyl pressing of the second edition, 500 copies, full colour single outer sleeve, newly designed full colour printed lyric inner sleeve. Transparent red vinyl with white splatter effect. Download included. CD in a 4 panel digipack with a 12 page lyric booklet. When the self titled debut album from female Ukrainian punk trio Death Pill, came out the reaction was unanimous. ‘Death Pill have made one of the best crossover albums of the modern era’ - Metal Hammer // 'Death Pill are intensely furious. There is nothing on the Ukrainian trio's debut that isn't seething with anger, or delivered with boiling vitriol. ’ – Kerrang // 'A tirade of metalcore, thrash and hardcore, it’s a face-toasting listen’ - The Guardian // ‘This eponymous album is a real masterstroke and a sign not only that DEATH PILL are here to stay but that they are going to take a few scalps with them’ - Distorted Sound But this is not just a repress. This is that cracking debut … with a difference. The band explain ….. “In the original first pressing of the Death Pill album, there were 2 Russian-language lyrics songs, which the band recorded before the fullscale invasion of Russia into the territory of Ukraine, and the band didn't have the opportunity to change these lyrics before the release of the album in 2023. From February 2022, the band performs its program only in English: - "We deleted from the story those lines that were written in Russian, and we no longer want to have them in our work. We wanted to change this even before the first release, but it was impossible due to a huge numbers of factors. During the Euro/UK tour in 2023, the girls had the opportunity to re-record the vocals for these 2 tracks in English. That is why in the second press of the first album we automatically have the release of two tracks.” So, not a repress, but a 2nd edition, with all the fire and vitriol still intact, now the official version of the album from this point on.
