Redeye Label of the Month Q&A
When and where did the label begin?
We (myself and Matt) started up way back in 1998 with a plan to just release a series of 12” EPs and with no actual idea how the hell you actually released records or how in the hell you run a record label. I’d been a promoter putting on shows in Brighton, UK, anything from The Prodigy to Gil Scott Heron, but was a musician on the side, so the whole thing was a front for my creative endeavors. We needed a guinea pig, we found Blue States, and quickly realized our guinea pig was actually going somewhere.
What is the meaning behind the name for the label?
No meaning at all was the aim, and reckon we perfectly succeeded in that. Neither me or Matt have been to Memphis, but need to try and change that in 2023. Anyone want to put us up for a night?
How has the label changed since it started?
Hugely, in the sense that, back then we were releasing music that could loosely be boxed off in one genre. Honestly after 3-4 years of that we were looking for something new, and at that precise point the Go! Team demos landed on my desk. That debut album Thunder Lightning Strike went on to sell hundreds of thousands round the world, and stylistically opened up so many more doors for us.
Describe the general makeup of your team at the label. The label itself is run by myself and my brother Matt, ably supported by Sam and Sophia. We keep things tight, and as the artists on the label develop we expand the teams as we go. It’s probably time to look at a new hire though, so if anyone’s looking for a job in North London…
Is there a genre that you would consider to be the label’s “signature style,” or is it a mix?
It’s definitely a mix, and we wouldn’t have it any other way. We find ourselves going down various paths for a while, and then taking sharp left turns, and if we couldn’t switch it up I honestly don’t think we’d still be doing this.
How would you describe your overall ambitions and goals as a label from when you first started compared to now? When we started it was literally a dream to have just one of our records in Rough Trade. Then it’s like, getting your first bit of press (it was all print press back then), your first bit of radio, you start ticking these things off, and you realize there’s always another thing to tick off, and that was a huge thing through those first years. Oddly that part of it never changes, the unending quest to get people to hear about and hopefully love the music we are passionate about. We know you can’t choose, but what’s been your favorite label release, and why?
Can we have 3? Blue States “Nothing Changes Under the Sun,” without which we’d not be doing this any more, The Go! Team “Thunder Lightning Strike” which took us round the world and showed us anything is possible, and Field Music’s “Measure,” which reminded us why we love running a label so much after a time when running a label had been, for us at least, at its very hardest
What is your stance on color vinyl? What’s the most unique color LP or overall packaging you’ve ever seen or released?
I think what started as a bit of fun has got out of hand. It feels harder to buy a standard black LP at a reasonable price than a tricolor die cut LP with bonus 7” signed by the artists for the price of a new car. That being said, we’ve yet to do a zoetrope LP, so keep ‘em peeled in ‘23.
Forget about the vinyl boom - how are you and your label responding to the ever-increasing popularity of cassette tapes? CDs??
We bloody love CDs. Low cost, quick turnaround, if you put them in a wallet less environmental impact. Format of the future I tell you.
How would you describe the average fan of the label?
As beautiful on the inside as they are on the outside
What in your opinion has been the biggest change in the music industry from when you first started compared to now?
I mean aside from, for example, the death and rebirth of vinyl and the rise of streaming, the fact that artists have to always feed the content machine, the end of print media in the US, the near death of dedicated music retail chains, not much has changed.
If you had to start a new sub-label, what would it be called and what kind of music would it be geared towards? We’ve got enough on our plate, cause we’re now working with some affiliated labels: Daylight Savings, which is Field Music’s label, with upcoming releases from David Brewis and SLUG, with more in the pipeline. Then there’s Zen FC, Yard Act’s label, home of their debut EP, and we’re expecting a lot more from them, and also Permanent Creeps, a label which is incubating some great new artists.
Want to shout out a personal favorite record store or retail establishment? Now’s your chance: Being based in the UK we’ve got so many great stores, but got to shout out my local Flashback in Crouch End, London. Over in the US big ups to Electric Fetus for being top.
They say our sun will explode in about 5 billion years or so- how would you like the label to be remembered? By the fact that all our platinum sellers came in the second half of our forty year existance.

YOUNG FATHERS
HEAVY HEAVY
After the monumental success and critical acclaim of Cocoa Sugar, Mercury Prize winning Edinburgh trio Young Fathers will release their highly anticipated sixth studio album, Heavy Heavy. Made up of Alloysious Massaquoi, Graham ‘G’ Hastings and Kayus Bankole, Young Fathers have long been recognised as one of Britain’s most vital and distinguished bandsmerging incendiary and thought provoking lyrics with cutting edge visuals and an undeniable propulsive live show. Written and recorded over the course of three years, Heavy Heavy is a tour de force from the trio. An unashamedly soulful and heartfelt album, where the drums set the scene throughout to transport the listener to a place of celebration and awakening.
Cocoa Sugar received huge press support from Entertainment Weekly, Pitchfork (7.3/10), NPR, Pop Matters (9/10 - “This album will resonate for years to come"), Under The Radar (8.5/10), Exclaim (9/10), Northern Transmissions (8/10), New York Times Magazine Music Issue, The Fader, Stereogum, Noisey, Hypebeast, Past and more. The band have had multiple sold out headline shows (Elsewhere in Brooklyn (The New Yorker praising the group’s “impressive ease" and “versatility that can be heard in the pop harmonies and stomping rhythms that seem to glue their avant sounds together.”) and Moroccan Lounge in LA), support for LCD Soundsystem and Yeah Yeah Yeahs at Hollywood Bowl as well as a SXSW performance for the New York Times showcase, KEXP live session and performance on Jimmy Kimmel.
Prior to Cocoa Sugar, Young Fathers released the Mercury Prize winning album DEAD in 2014 followed by the seminal White Men Are Black Men Too in 2015. Before these albums the band released two now-legendary mixtapes Tape One in 2011 and Tape Two in 2013, the latter of which also won Scottish Album of the Year

Over their six albums The Go! Team have taken sonic day trips to other lands - musically dipping into other cultures. But now on this, their seventh - they’ve bought a round-the-world ticket…. Benin, Japan, France, India, Texas and Detroit - all stops along the way. Wildly different voices from wildly different cultures side by side but all still sounding unmistakably Go! Team. Setting the course for a kaleidoscopic, cable access, channel hop.
On the vocal roll call there’s Star Feminine Band, an all-girl group from West Africa, the Indian Bollywood playback singer Neha Hatwar, Kokubo Chisato from J-Pop indie band Lucie Too, 19 year-old Detroit rapper IndigoYaj, Hilarie Bratset (exApples in Stereo), Brooklyn rapper Nitty Scott, and a whole host of others, alongside Go! Team staple Ninja.
“Maybe it's an anti-Brexit reflex,” says Parton. “A rejection of flag-waving and inward-facing. But this is no Coke ad, some Valium vision of joining hands on a hillside. The Go! Team has always been about knowing what’s happening but focusing on the good shit. It’s about where you let your attention settle”.
Picking up from 2021’s “Get Up Sequences Part One”, Part Two continues the feeling of Technicolour overload. “A feeling that there is so much good shit out there that you are grabbing it all at the same time. The record is saying: “Look at this. Look at this”. When you listen to it I just want the saturation of the world to be turned up”. Simultaneously messy and tight, chaotic and coherent both albums have an obsession with the power of a bassline and a backbeat. "For me each successive Go! Team record just gets fucking groovier and for me grooviness is life”, Parton says.
It’s a journey spanning Cyclone Tracey wig-outs, chroma key sitar psychedelia, Casiotone anthems, spoken word melodrama and kalimba callouts. Brill building melodies lead into musical handbrake turns, four track into panoramic.
Eighteen years after their debut LP The Go! Team are still unlike anyone else and on "Get Up Sequences Part Two" they sound as fresh as a club soda….
“I feel like there are two sides of me,” says the Nashville-based singer-songwriter and guitar virtuoso known as Sunny War. “One of them is very self-destructive, and the other is trying to work with that other half to keep things balanced.” That’s the central conflict on her fourth album, the eclectic and innovative Anarchist Gospel, which documents a time when it looked like the self-destructive side might win out.
Extreme emotions can make that battle all the more perilous, yet from such trials Sunny has crafted a set of songs that draw on a range of ideas and styles, as though she’s marshaling all her forces to get her ideas across: ecstatic gospel, dusty country blues, thoughtful folk, rip-roaring rock and roll, even avant garde studio experiments. She melds them together into a powerful statement of survival, revealing a probing songwriter who indulges no comforting platitudes and a highly innovative guitarist who deploys spidery riffs throughout every song.
Because it promises not healing but resilience and perseverance, because it doesn’t take shit for granted, Anarchist Gospel holds up under such intense emotional pressure, acknowledging the pain of living while searching for something that lies just beyond ourselves, some sense of balance between the bad and the good.

FORMAT:
Even if you’ve never heard this 1974 album, you’ve heard it. What do we mean? Well, the drum break from the song “Ashley’s Roachclip” is probably the single most sampled track in all of hip hop. Everybody, and we mean EVERYBODY, has used it—RunD.M.C., Eric B. & Rakim, and LL Cool J to name a few (and Public Enemy sampled “Blow Your Whistle” for good measure). And when you throw in the fact that the D.C.-based Soul Searchers were led by the soon-to-be “Godfather of Go-Go” himself, Chuck Brown, you can understand why Salt of the Earth—which originally came out on the lightly distributed Sussex label—ranks among the most collectible R&B albums of all time. For its first-ever American LP reissue, we’ve pressed this puppy up on coke clear vinyl. You need to own this record!
Dorothy Ashby was probably the greatest—and certainly the most swinging—jazz harpist of all time, re-purposing an instrument best known for ethereal glissandos into a fully versatile voice in combo settings, capable of providing both instrumental embroidery and rhythmic drive. But she was always fighting an uphill battle in terms of garnering critical and commercial success; both her gender and the exoticism of her instrument often prevented her from being taken seriously among the hidebound environs of late ‘50s and ‘60s jazz. But it is that very uniqueness of her sound and station in the jazz world that has made her one of the most collectible musicians of her era, as her music has been sampled and celebrated by modern-day hip hop and world music artists (e.g. Jurassic Five, Bonobo) alike. In a Minor Groove is one of two albums she made in 1958 with flautist/saxophonist Frank Wess, and it is a marvel; backed by fellow Detroit native Herman Wright on bass and the great Roy Haynes on drums, she and Wess weave mesmerizing melodic threads through standards like “Alone Together” and “Yesterdays.” But perhaps the most amazing track is “Bohemia After Dark,” which displays Ashby’s uncanny ability to turn her harp into a rhythm guitar! For this first-ever domestic black vinyl reissue of In a Minor Groove, we are using the original mono sources—not the rechanneled stereo and jumbled track listing that showed up on Prestige’s later repackaging called Dorothy Ashby Plays for Beautiful People. Original album art with Ira Gitler’s sleeve notes, too.

The duo of Don Gardner and Dee Dee Ford reached the charts across the nation in 1962 with “I Need Your Lovin’,” a Top 20 Pop and R&B hit in the mold of Ike & Tina Turner. This new edition of their best work including the original I Need Your Lovin’ LP as originally sequenced, plus many extra tracks including the long, unedited version of the title tune alongside the single version—a masterful example of editing that turned a jam into a powerful, hook-filled hit record. Also included are the R&B charting hits “Don’t You Worry” & “Lead Me On,” making this the definitive set by one of the early ‘60s most dynamic R&B duos.
On the heels of his already critically acclaimed (yes, already!) retrospective, World Spirituality Classics
The Muslim Highlife of Alhaji Waziri Oshomah, Alhaji Waziri Oshomah — the Oyoyo King, the Godfather of Afemai Music, the Etsako Super Star, Mr. Please Please Please, Mr. Dynamite — returns with Vol. 1
Along with the other four volumes of the series, Vol. 1 is now available—for the very first time!—as part of a complete set (in a box): Vol 1 - 5 (1978 - 1985) (November 4, 2022).
Waziri hails from a small part of Edo State in southern Nigeria called Afemailand, known for being a harmonious region where Muslims and Christians live—and dance—together. And there, as a devout Muslim and an exemplar of religious piety in his community, Waziri’s music fuses Etsako/Afemai folk styles with pan-Nigerian highlife and pop to create a sublime vehicle for his Islamic philosophy that gets everyone—Muslims, Christians, whoever—on the dancefloor.
Vol. 1 focuses on Waziri’s illustrious mid-career output—the music he created during the years leading up to and after he performed his first hajj. Every song here (one of which you might recognize from The Muslim Highlife) strikes his signature balance of traditional music, highlife, and funk, as he entreats you to stay on the straight and narrow, though there’s nothing straight about his beat.

"What sets Nada Surf apart is the unguarded quality of singer-guitarist Matthew Caws’ songwriting, which dwells on love, friendship, and the desire for connection with a warmth and honesty that go perfectly with his melodies..."
- Rolling Stone
“Nada Surf is one of those bands that sneak up on you. You think it’s a good band, sure. And then you realize you listen to its records all... the... time.”
- Los Angeles Times
“Caws’ great trick as a songwriter is devising tunes that start out in melancholy minor-key mode but end up as hopeful-sounding odes to the human spirit...”
- Billboard
Originally released for Record Store Day 2021 and immediately sold-out on exclusive blue-vinyl, Nada Surf and Barsuk Records are pleased to release the Cycle Through EP on standard black vinyl.
The EP is a companion piece to the band’s critically lauded 2020 instant-classic pandemically-prescient album Never Not Together
Cycle Through EP features three Never Not Together outtakes (“Under The Linden Tree”, “Stories Going ‘Round”, “Between The Wars”) as well as an orchestral/choir version of "Looking For You," the meditative extended short-film version of “Just Wait,” and Spanish, French and acoustic takes on “So Much Love.”
Founded in 1992, Nada Surf – Matthew Caws, Daniel Lorca, Ira Elliot, and their longtime friend and collaborator, Louie Lino – has only grown more creative and resourceful as time has marched on, each consecutive release notable for the quality of its craft as well as Caws’ ongoing growth as both songwriter and human being. The band's latest LP, Never Not Together, was met with praise from all corners – The Current called it “one of the best albums of their career,” noting that it “shows off their prowess as experts of their craft while sharing their playful side. Never Not Together has all the hallmarks of the genre Nada Surf helped define but with a refined touch that comes from life experience and humility.”

Chime School is the project of San Francisco musician Andy Pastalaniec. Charmed by 80s indie and its 60s forbearers, Andy cut his teeth as a drummer with SF groups Pink Films, Cruel Summer, and Seablite; now he has come out from behind the kit to write and record his own material. The aptly named Chime School pays homage to the formative jangle of The Byrds by way of early Primal Scream and The Springfields; the production and pop sensibility of the Biff Bang Pow and Razorcuts; and the spirit of great singles labels like Creation, Postcard and Sarah.
From the dreamy album opener "Wait Your Turn" to the driving jangle of singles "Taking Time To Tell You" and "It's True" we can see that we're in the presence of a very talented writer indeed, someone with a lifetime's worth of pop fandom just waiting to burst out in song. Since it’s release in November 2021 this album has charmed pop lovers around the world, quickly selling out its first pressing and fueling demand for MORE.

I have often wondered what exactly the true roots were for Bardo Pond. For a band with such a unique sound, where did it all come from? In a recent discussion with Michael Gibbons he was quick to tell me that their earliest true influences were Sabbath, free jazz and no wave. Using these sounds as the initial seeds, the band coalesced and poked their heads out into the world and discovered the rest of what would guide them as a unit. Their early palette quickly added shades from early Dinosaur Jr, My Bloody Valentine, Charalambides, Spacemen 3, the entire Siltbreeze catalog, Sonic Youth, Skullflower and the Sun City Girls. The combination made from such diverse influences is what the band had in their collective head between June and December of 1993 when they recorded No Hashish, No Change Money, No Saki Saki and released it as a cassette, partially in an effort to secure more gigs. This is a snapshot of Bardo Pond in its earliest form – then a quartet consisting of Isobel Sollenberger (flute, vocals), Joe Culver (drums) and Michael and John Gibbons on guitars – crawling onto land and developing its own legs.
I like to fantasize about the room where they all played this material live. In my mind I envision pot smoke wafting throughout, possibly old area rugs on the floor. There should to be a collection of telling and ragged posters/art on the walls, maybe a living room situation, a couch and old chair. I can see curtains hanging over the windows letting in small amounts of sunlight, a lone floor lamp. Using this environment as a source, I see the quartet taking their time winding in and out of a morass of sound where a melody emerges from the dissonance converging around it, simultaneously swallowing it up and spewing it forward, Isobel’s voice being the center of this gravitational pull, the swirl that brings you in. From there one of the guitars takes off echoing the vocals while the other guitar is shimmering around from all sides, sliding and slurping with the rhythm and cymbals splashing with no hurry. This is the sound of freedom, the sound of Bardo Pond. This album contains the DNA of all their future music, from the low dirge to the sexy laid-back choking of beautiful vocals lost and found amongst wavering vibrations of rising and falling drone. Sometimes Isobel’s vocals are a guide, a way through, as in the song “Rupture”, a thing that peaks out occasionally above the dense cloud of uncertainty and psychedelic wah noise. They are there to remind you that don’t know where we’re going but that feels good. No Hashish… emanates the chaotic splendor of when a band first starts out and aren’t sure what they’re doing, that magical and best kind of energy which simply cannot be repeated. They went on with their following records to refine a special and unique form of mind expansion/explosion based on equal parts of beautiful chaos and repressed noise and you can see all of that start right here. This album is for me like all of Bardo Pond’s catalog, a cleanse of the mind and soul, a soundtrack for today’s “great resignation” and the ultimate way to turn on and on and on…

"When everyone left NYC, the sewer opened and we crawled out. ” Prolific Brooklyn institution The Men return with their ninth studio album which marks a return to the more scuzzy and abrasive rock ploughed over their decade and a half spent coursing through the grimy sewers of NYC. Here, nocturnal proto-punk meets a timeless, all-guns-blazing rock’n’roll gusto.
That the album leans into a more primitive, back -to-basics sound owes largely to the way in which was forged, an earlier version of the record scrapped in favour of four people playing in a room together. “The New York City album was revised, reorganized and shaped until it became clear that things fall into place like the hammer driving the nail or the scythe's swipe through the tall grass.” The end result is a series of cuts played live and recorded to 2" tape in Travis Harrison ’s (Guided By Voices, Built To Spill) Brooklyn studio.
‘New York City’ is a record that doesn’t stop moving for a second, packed full of the kind of energy you can only really capture in a live setting. “These songs became the blood of the band as the band could only exist for and of these songs. There was no place else to hang their hats.. ”

- “Sumac is an extreme metal power trio with seemingly no boundaries, jazz-like interplay and a hankering for noises both brittle and extreme, sparse and overwhelming.”

About the AVOLA “PSYKOR”
Psykor is AVOLA’s most ambitious project to date: a collection of recordings created in the ongoing aftermath of a lingering global pandemic. The cavernous void at its center is a two-month trip Veronica Avola took to her birthplace of Rapallo, Italy in the spring of 2021 in order to help her mother sort through the belongings of her estranged grandmother, who passed away from COVID the previous fall. Field recordings made at her grandmother’s delayed funeral and of the eerie sounds of the furniture in her empty apartment are mixed with the richly expressive voices of modular synthesizers and the sentient stirrings of samplers to trace a psychedelic journey through an emotionally fraught underworld. This heaviness is evident throughout, from the howling resonance of opener “Beast Belly” to the elegiac ambience of “In the Mourning.”
As with all of Avola’s work, there is also a playful side to this album, which bursts through in the prismatic potency of beat-driven bangers like “Daddy Loves E.T.” and “R.I.P. BOAR (Hit By Ford Fiesta)”. The harsh catharsis of these tracks maps onto an experience of re-entry — of being back in the US, back to being able to play live shows — along with a heightened awareness of the paramount importance of friendship. Whether forged in the bonds of biology or through the connections of chosen community, the theme of family shines through here in all its glorious complexity, as does Avola’s mastery of finding humor in darkness.

OVERVIEW
The first signing on Is it Jazz? Records, the new sub-label of Karisma Records, is the Norwegian instrumental quartet Soft Ffog. And what a perfect first signing for a prog rock label going into vast and scary jazz territory.
As the band says themselves: Ever wondered what it would soundlikeifJimiHendrixjoinedDeepPurplepursuingtosoundlikeGentleGiant, andthenfailingmiserablybecauseoftoomuchjazzconsumptionlately?Didn’tthinkso, butanyhowSoftFfog´s soundisunique, anddrawsparallelstotheaforementionedactsinsomewhatstyle, compositionsandaesthetic, butismorerootedinjazzwiththeirprolongedsolosandimprovisations.
Soft Ffog started as one-off gig commissioned by Kongsberg Jazzfestival in 2016. Despite the success of this event, the band did not get the momentum it needed to be a proper working band. This combined with the busy schedules for the musicians in other bands and projects, the band only played gigs every now and then. These gigs did help refining their sound, so bandleader Tom Hasslan decided in 2020 that the time was right to record their first album with all Hasslan compositions.
The band consists of band leader Tom Hasslan (Krokofant) on guitars, Axel Skalstad (Krokofant) on drums, Trond Frønes (Red Kite, Grand General) on bass and Vegard Lien Bjerkan (WIZRD) on keyboards. The album was recorded at Studio Paradiso with Christian Engfelt as engineer and producer.
The combined members of Soft Ffog have probably played with everyone in the Norwegian jazz scene, but here they do their own thing and they’re combining the sounds from King Crimson with Terje Rypdal, Deep Purple with Pat Metheny, and it sounds awesome!
Beware of blistering guitar solos, gnarly bass, crazy drums and supersonic keyboard playing!

OVERVIEW
The Norwegian 8-piece alternative progressive pop orchestra MEER is welcoming you with a massive sound, fabulous melodies, awesome harmonies and quite a few surprises.
MEER started out as a duo in Hamar, Norway in 2008, and since then the duo has expanded considerably to become what it is today - an eight-piece eclectic collective whose music is a mix of orchestral pop, classical music and progressive rock. With their grandiose string arrangements and polyphonic vocals, MEER's sound is far from minimalistic and flows in seemingly constant motion. Today's line-up comprises Johanne Kippersund on vocals, Knut Kippersund on vocals, Eivind Strømstad on guitar, Åsa Ree on violin, Ingvild Nordstoga Eide on viola, Ole Gjøstøl on piano, Morten Strypet on bass and Mats Lillehaug on drums.

OVERVIEW
Although the members were good friends and musical allies for years beforehand, Wizzerd was officially formed in October 2014. Forged from countless hours of jamming in a northwestern Montana basement was a sound that Wizzerd could latch onto as their own. They soon penned and recorded their first album, ‘Doomchild’, and since then have been challenging themselves to grow in every way possible while remaining independently managed and produced. Since the release of ‘Doomchild’, they have written mounds of material and released some of it in the form of their self titled LP on Cursed Tongue Records, and has recently signed to the mighty Fuzzorama Records to put out the third in this musical trilogy: Space?: Issue No.001 that will please your eardrums like nothing else. However, perhaps the way the band has grown most is on the road. Four years of extensive touring of the US and breaking ground in Europe has led the band to bring their sound to the ears of many people far and wide. All of this time in the van and on the stage was followed by lots of studio time has led up to THIS album!. With new music and more touring in the near future, Wizzerd has a bright road ahead that is not to be missed!

Deadly Vipers distills an effective fuzzy rock, without frills, thanks to the richness of the compositions, all made possible by grooves as catchy as they are devastating.

Watch out for drones coming from above, they are listening to what is being said below. The album is mixed by Mr.Dango of Truckfighters so you can expect a hell of a fuzzy sound on this album, and yeah the guys don't try to be a band that creates anew gengre instead they take classic stoner and psychedelic rock an play it exactly how it should be playe d! CORTEX: Live at Urania
The Swedish cult post-punk band Cortex from Gothenburg imploded and resurrected multiple times around legendary vocalist and songwriter Freddie Wadling as the only constant member all through the band’s existence between 1980 and 1987.
The live recording at Studio Urania made in October 1983 was at first only released as a cassette and in 1990 as an LP. Both have been collectibles for decades. Finally, this holy grail of freakish noise is being properly released on vinyl again.

MELT
OVERVIEW
It’s easy to be fascinated by the sound of Melt Motif. One moment it’s dreamy and cinematic. The next it’s aggressive and industrial. Unpredictable and impossible to label, always taking surprising turns. If you have an open mind and a relaxed approach to genres, you might have found a new favorite band.
Melt Motif started as an experiment by Rakel & Kenneth Rasmus Greve. The few who stumbled upon it loved it. So did Apollon Records who signed the band while it still was a secret. Greve searched for the right mixing engineer to develop the sound, and finally teamed up with São Paulo producer and musician, Joe Irente. The collaboration worked smoothly and the common artistic view made it obvious for all parts to make Irente a permanent member of the band. The first singles from the album have been met with great reviews and a growing fan base.

Raven is the long-anticipated sequel to Kelela’s impeccable studio debut and is slated for release February 10, 2023. Kelela emerges from the tides of her higher self’s oceanic orbit with a fifteen-track, continuous play LP exploring autonomy, belonging and self-renewal as healing. TUBEWAY ARMY
Beggars Arkive will reissue the self-titled debut album by GARY NUMAN’S TUBEWAY ARMY on October 7th. The album will be available in two formats, standard black vinyl and marbled blue. The audio was mastered at Abbey Road from analog tape.
TUBEWAY ARMY was the name of GARY NUMAN’s band. Formed in 1977, their self-titled debut album was released at the tail end of 1978. In addition to Gary, the band consisted of Paul Gardiner on bass and backing vocals and Jess Lidyard on drums.
The album was a segue from the punk-leaning sounds of their early singles, to the pioneering electronic music that Gary Numan became known for. The phrase “garagey sci-fi rock” was used in reference to this album. This album truly paved the way for Gary Numan to become an electronic pioneer. It was during the sessions for this album that he came across a minimoog synthesizer by accident in the recording studio, and the rest is history.
“When I saw the synthesizer at Spaceward Studios for that first time, I was fascinated by it in a nerdy way; but I didn’t have any expectations from it at all. He said, “Have a go.” He turned it on; I didn’t know how to set it up so I just accepted whatever sound it had. I pressed a key and it blew me away. This hugely powerful, growly sound came out of it. The control room shook with the weight of the sound. I’d never heard anything like it. I just thought, “Fuck me! That’s unbelievable!” I pressed a key and it blew me away....He’d left me alone with the synthesizer in the control room, and by the time that was done I was absolutely converted. Over the next three days I turned that entire album [Tubeway Army] into a pseudoelectronic guitar album, and that’s what I took back to the record company. That’s how it started for me. That moment effectively changed my entire life.”
- Gary Numan
Shortly after this album’s release, Tubeway Army recorded their follow-up, Replicas, which contained “Are ‘Friends’ Electric?”, which became the first synthesizer-based number 1 hit of the electronic era in 1979. After its release, Numan opted to drop the Tubeway Army name and release music under his own name, retaining the musicians from Tubeway Army as his backing band.

COUNT OSSIE AND THE MYSTIC REVELATION OF RASTAFARI TALES OF MOZAMBIQUE
Street Date: 5th February 2016
No shipments outside of North America
Soul Jazz Records are releasing Count Ossie and The Mystic Revelation’s seminal 1975 album Tales of Mozambique in an expanded double album/single CD/digital format, fully remastered and with the inclusion of two bonus rare single only tracks, full sleevenotes, exclusive photographs and interview.
Count Ossie is the central character in the development of Rastafarian roots music, nowadays an almost mythical and iconic figure. His importance in bringing Rastafarian music to a populist audience is matched only by Bob Marley’s promotion of the faith int ernationally in the 1970s.
Count Ossie’s drummers performed on the first commercially released single to integrate Rastafarian traditional music with popular music: the vocal group The Folkes Brothers’ groundbreaking song ‘Oh Carolina’, recorded for produc er Prince Buster in 1959. In 1966 his drummers greeted the momentous arrival of Haile Selassie at Kingston airport. His legendary jam sessions in his Rastafarian compound up in the hills of Wareika, Kingston, are famous for the many Jamaican musicians who attended including The Skatalites players –Roland Alphonso, Don Drummond, Johnny Moore, Lloyd Knibbs – and many others.
The Mystic Revelation of Rastafari formed in Kingston, Jamaica, in 1970, a union of Count Ossie’s Rastafarian drummers – variously known as his African Drums, Wareikas or his Afro Combo – and the saxophonist Cedric Im Brooks’ horns group, The Mystics.
The Mystic Revelation of Rastafari are the defining group in bringing authentic Rastafarian rhythms into the collective consciousness of p opular music, their unique music is at once rooted in the deep traditions and rituals of traditional drumming alongside a forward thinking, even avant garde, artistry influenced by the likes of John Coltrane, Sun Ra, Pharoah Sanders and other pioneering African American jazz artists radicalised and charged by the civil rights movement of the 1960s. Tales of Mozambique is a truly unique and fascinating ground breaking album.

Happy Hearts is the first of what will prove to be many collaborations between hyper-prolific artists Jad Fair and Samuel Locke Ward. After connecting with one another during Fair’s marathon 2021 effort to complete 100 albums in a calendar year, the two recorded one song each week, producing an eclectic array of tunes that moves from bubblegum synth to capricious noise rock. Tying this variety of moods and sound together is that most universal of themes: love. Through Fair’s instantly recognizable voice and unique lyrical mind, Happy Hearts blushes with the joy of fresh romance and smolders with the warm glow of a long term relationship. No weepy breakup anthems or ruminations on the ones that got away. This album is all donuts and bluebirds and celebrations and dreams come true. Or as Fair himself says, “Happy Hearts is a very positive album. It’s good to stay positive.”
Listening to Tim Hill’s new album, Giant—a rugged, tasteful batch of cowboy tunes and Americana ballads that feel forged out of the embers of a desert campfire—you might assume that he’s been working on a ranch his whole life. You’d be half right: Hill is indeed a rancher, working in the Orange County, California, area of Silverado, but he’s actually a relative novice when it comes to tasks like tending to horses and driving a tractor. He only just got the job since the pandemic started, inspired on something of a whim: “I always kind of thought I could work on a ranch,” Hill says. “So I just looked around for some jobs and they had an opening.”
Hill is based in Whittier, California, where he was born and raised, and music has always been his guiding force. The son of a music teacher, Hill grew up playing various instruments in a formal manner, but eventually carved a niche for himself in local punk bands, before finding himself as an in-demand touring musician for artists like Nick Waterhouse and the Allah-Las. When the Las—one of Los Angeles’s most beloved psych-rock bands—decided to start Calico Discos, their record label, they knew just the guy for its inaugural release: Hill’s solo debut, a 7-inch for the 2018 song “Paris, Texas,” introduced him as an alt-country act to be reckoned with—and his full-length debut, 2019’s Payador, was an underground hit, with copies of the sold-out first run having gone for as much as $100 on Discogs.
Payador was “a simple and honest attempt at a first record,” according to Hill, which was done entirely at home on a four-track. When the project was finished, the fact was made quite cosmically clear: “It couldn’t have been more than a few seconds after the last take, the last overdub, the last cassette, that smoke began to billow from behind the four-track recorder,” Hill explains. So for his sophomore album, he decided that maybe it was time to upgrade the approach a little bit. Taking a drive down the 605 to Long Beach, Hill set up shop at Jonny Bell’s Jazzcats Studio, where he played all of the instruments himself, with the exception of two outside players—one for pedal steel and one for violin.
The result is a record steeped in affection for artists like Randy Newman, Warren Zevon, and Neil Young, but reimagined through the lens of the modern cultural melting pot that Hill lives in. (“I feel like I'm always trying to just rewrite [Young’s] “Out on the Weekend” in some way or another,” says Hill, “just because I like that feel so much.”) The choice of covers on the album speaks multitudes: Giant features a heartbreaking take on Townes Van Zandt’s “No Place to Fall,” a festive, authentic take on José López Alavez’s “Canción Mixteca” (which was notably covered by Ry Cooder and Harry Dean Stanton in Paris, Texas), and two impressive takes on part of Johann Sebastian Bach’s “French Suites,” referred to by Hill as “French Sweet,” naturally. “My dad only listened to classical growing up,” Hill explains, “so it didn’t really mean anything to me then. But now I love it. I can listen to, like, Glenn Gould all day.”
But Hill’s original songs are the sturdy pickup-truck engine of Giant—songs like “Calico,” a dreamy ride into the center of the sun, and the opener, “The Clock’s Never Wrong,” a waltz that would get even the drunkest person at the bar to stand up and start dancing along: “I miss the good ole time when girls used to ask what car you drive,” Hill croons in that latter song, “and leave you with a hole in your heart.” On “Candlestick,” he takes his graceful chords and melody and applies them to a poem written by his friend, the artist Ry Welch. “It was just one of those things where I didn’t have to move any word around,” Hill notes. “I didn’t have to cut anything out. It just fit perfectly in that music.”
Of course, there’s also Giant’s title track, an operatic piano piece that presents a brief, episodic tale of the culture clash that occurs in so many forms in the U.S. these days. The song was inspired by the 1956 George Stevens film of the same name (itself adapted from Edna Ferber’s 1952 novel); Hill was enamored by the movie, and by James Dean’s performance in particular, in which he plays a ranch hand in Texas in the 1920s. “I really identify with that character now,” Hill explains.
Giant was the last movie Dean filmed before he died, and Hill has inherited a fitting ethos for what he’s trying to do with his album named after it—and with his whole career: “Like the string quartet on the deck of the Titanic,” he says, “I’d like to play something beautiful before the ship goes down.”

On Grace & Dignity
The beautiful third album by the GOLDEN DREGS, On Grace and Dignity, starts with a scene of a man going on holiday in search of his “best self”. In among the personal reflections on loss of innocence and inferiority, Benjamin spins subtly interweaving narratives about survival, desperate acts of violence, loss and the limitations of community in the face of rapacious gentrification. Nevertheless, it is, appropriately for an album about home, somewhere you’ll want to spend a while. (Benjamin recorded it at his place –that’s his sister Hannah on saxophone.) Life here proceeds at a graceful pace–the bass is sturdy, organs celestial, horns softly valedictory–grounded by Benjamin’s deep voice, which seems to resonate from his feet as he delivers the sort of meticulously written lunar wisdom worthy of Lambchop’s Kurt Wagner, or the tidy yet revelatory koans of Silver Jews’ David Berman.

Lisa O’Neill
“O’Neill is one of the most striking folk singers performing today.” – The Guardian “Heard a Long Gone Song is as beautiful as it gets”. – The Irish Times
Forthcoming press and features from NPR, New Yorker, No Depression and more! North American tour in 2023
Following 5 BBC Folk Awards nominations and a designation by the Guardian as Folk Album of the Year in 2019, it is fair to say that Lisa O’Neill is one of the most evocative songwriters in contemporary Irish music today. Fresh off 2018’s collection Heard a Long Song Gone for the River Lea imprint, The Wren EP in 2019 and an adaptation of Bob Dylan’s “All the Tired Horses” for the final scene of epic TV drama Peaky Blinders, O’Neill now returns with her latest album, and first for the Rough Trade label, the beautiful, resonant All Of This Is Chance.
A raconteur in the truest sense of the word, every story starts somewhere and O’Neill starts this extraordinary collection here on earth, on Irish soil, hands in the land. The album is full of both orchestral masterpieces like the ambitious and cinematic “Old Note”, inspired by the great Monaghan writer Patrick Kavanagh’s prescient meditation on The Great Hunger as well as stirring meditations on nature, birds, berries, bees, and blood that ring out over a clacking banjo, dusting and devastating all those in its wake.
All Of This Is Chance takes Lisa’s inimitable voice to greater heights, or depths, depending on which way you look at it.

It is a powerful thing to return to our ancestral lands and often times the journey is not easy. Like the salmon through the currents, like the tide as it crawls to shore this is a story of return. It is the call and response. It is the outstretched arms of the people who came before, welcoming her home. The Land, The Water, The Sky is a celebration of lineage and strength. Even in its deepest moments of loneliness and grief, of frustration over a world wrought with colonial violence and pain, the songs remind us that if we slow down, if we listen to the waves and the wind through the trees, we will remember to breathe.
There is a throughline of story in every song, a remembrance of knowledge and teachings, a gratitude of wisdom passed down and carried. There is a reimagining of Sedna who was o ered to the sea, and a beautiful rumination on sacri ce and humanity, and what it means to hold the stories that work to teach us something.
Chord progressions born out of moments of sadness and solitude transform into the islands that sit blue along the horizon. The Salish Sea curves along her homelands, and when the singer is close to this water she is reminded of her grandmother, how she looked out at these same islands, and she’s held by spirit and memory.
The Land, The Water, The Sky rises and falls, in darkness and in light, but even in its most melancholy moments it is never despairing. That is the beauty of returning home. When you stand on ancestral lands it is impossible to be alone. You feel the arms and hands that hold you up, unwilling to let you fall into sorrow or abandonment. In her songs Katherine Paul has channeled that feeling of being held. In every note she has written a love letter to indigenous strength and healing.

UFFIE SUNSHINE FACTORY
Welcome to Uffie’s new album Sunshine Factory – an alternate reality that is only accessible to those yearning for escape. A nod to the ballroom scene, it is a place where you can be your most authentic self. Inside this trippy wonderland, you’ll meet Uffie, dancing amongst the lights of your hallucinations. Sunshine Factory is a wonderfully restless record. It’s a joyride through the club, hurtling into the forest, and crowd surfing into the arms of a lover… and yet it’s also the sound of waking up to a heap of champagne soaked jeans, the bass of your heart still throbbing along to last night’s melodies.
A decade after her first record, which included–debatably–the internet’s first viral hit, the electro smash “Pop The Glock,” Uffie “the French-American singer/rapper/DJ/fashion designer who took the internet by storm” (Brooklyn Vegan) is most definitely back. Raised between Florida and Hong Kong before moving to Paris with her British father, the now Los Angeles-based Uffie is undeniably a “child of the world;” unsurprisingly, the making of this record clocked up a few air miles as well. Birthing what would become the Sunshine Factory in Fonte da Telha, Portugal collaborating with Norwegian savant Lasse Lokøy, Uffie soon found a home for these songs back in California with Chaz Bear of Toro y Moi–who co-produced several of the tracks–and his Oakland-based label, Company Records. The resulting album is one of intricate production, sonic experimentation, and subtle poetic brilliance amongst a few Fleabag glances to the camera.
Amidst double entendres galore, her record exists in a curious space between punk and pop, which can be heard in the ska-meets-fashion week “dominoes.” Contrarily, “sophia” – which marked the advent of Uffie and Chaz’s creative partnership several years ago – poises Sunshine Factory as an otherworldly dance record one would hear in Berlin’s famous Berghain nightclub. She is the party girl who is at her most vulnerable in the chaotic “where does the party go?” where she reckons with facing who she truly is when she’s all alone. It’s in these dualities and juxtapositions that the joy of Uffie writhes.
The album also has a cameo or three, including the one and only Peaches. And after finding kinship and admiration in the genre-defying NNAMDÏ, she tapped him for the record’s sole feature on “month of mondays.” It is at this point in the record that the beloved je ne sais quoi that Uffie has always possessed really emerges. When the comedown begins and the insatiable few remain on the dancefloor, “a month of mondays” is the knowing nod to a stranger signaling the night’s shift in course. With Sunshine Factory, it’s a pop-up party wherever you can find some speakers. Cool.

The Beths’ Warm Blood is a strong contender for the catchiest record you’ve never heard. Formed when four jazz students at the University of Auckland bonded over their shared love of the pop-punk sounds of their youth, The Beths bring new energy to the genre. This 5-song debut EP, a deliriously pleasurable statement of purpose, comes crammed with enough blissful hooks to carry through most bands’ careers.
Listeners for whom the tag “New Zealand indie rock” brings to mind the Flying Nun sound of bands like The Clean and The Chills may be surprised to find Warm Blood’s five unstoppable tunes landing closer to artists like Slant 6 and The Breeders. The nimble guitar work here moves from heavy riffing reminiscent of Sleater-Kinney to hazily bending lines that would make Stephen Malkmus and Mary Timony beam, while the joyous vocal harmonies from all four members bubble and swell to ecstatic crescendos that channel The Zombies’ Odessey and Oracle.
With impeccable production from guitarist Jonathan Pearce and stellar musicianship across the board, Warm Blood is a non-stop delight. Tracks like leadoff track and first single “Whatever,” the ridiculously addictive standout “Idea/Intent,” and “Rush Hour 3,” a playful ode to romance in this era of download-and-chill franchise films, take delight in the challenge of breathing new energy into the limitations of the 3-minute pop song.

These Chicago veterans deliver a collaboration of hard-hitting, real-deal blues. Jimi Primetime Smith is son of blues woman Johnnie Mae Dunson and learned guitar from Jimmy Reed as a teenager. Blues harmonica ace Bob Corritore has been teaming with Jimi for the last 7 years and this album documents their musical adventures so far! Lots of good, rowdy blues fun contained in the 10 songs! Two modern day Chicago blues masters! Corritore has gained a strong presence in today’s blues market by releasing a solid output of music from his storied “Vaults” as well as
PÄRSON SOUND
Pärson Sound
Limited edition updated deluxe tri-fold sleeve 3LP set. A spectacular archival package of primitive drone and minimalist rock/trance/psych from the Swedish underground, believe the hype as follows; one of the most memorable audio documents ever.
Pitchfork rating 9.3. "For a brief period during 1967-68, Pärson Sound was a frontrunner in the burgeoning Swedish music scene, leading to an opening gig for the Doors and an invite from Andy Warhol to play an art exhibit in Stockholm. Regrettably, no album was ever cut and the band’s activity ended almost as soon as it began– although later manifestations would emerge and continue under the names International Harvester, Harvester and Träd, Gräs och Stenar. Serving up a platter of archival recordings this Pärson Sound collection is drug-addled psychedelic mind fuckery at its best. And that’s just the beginning. Successfully marrying the ideas of rock, jazz, and drone experimentalism, this Swedish quintet sounds like it wasn’t just trying to break free of the limitations inherent in each genre; at times, it sounds like they were trying to blow the doors off the hinges. Metal brutalities of 60s heavyweights Blue Che er merge with the minimalistic tone patterns of La Monte Young and Terry Riley. Rather than just endlessly chipping and hammering at rock’s surface noise, however, the group carry out complex sound experiments, whose full richness only emerge with several patient replays. During their brief stint, Pärson Sound had a rallying cry of “We, Here and Now!” that embraced their musical philosophy of a defragmented universal language. The time elapsed since their active years have seen a number of acts such as Amon Düül, Acid Mothers Temple and Taj Mahal Travelers traverse the same paths, garnishing accolades and international success. For a fan of any of these bands, or anyone fascinated by psychedelic, acid -blasted madness, this is ground zero. "

Exploring themes of the human and emotional consequences of life surrounded by data, the piece echoes the concept of social media, advertising, marketing companies and political factions exploiting our data to gain wealth, political advantage and sow division. Key reading for the project was based around the contemporary philosophical work Psychopolitics: Neoliberalism and New Technologies of Power by Byung-Chul Han.
“The piece opens with Monster which has a kind of drunken madness to it, highly repetitive to mirror the repetitive nature of how we as humans engage with technology such as social media. It’s sometimes edging towards chaos but yet always returning back to the same starting point, but eventually giving way to exhaustion. I wanted to create a bold opening piece for Overflow,” states West.
I Like features the mapping of data from dancer Tia Hockey’s personal monologue, which allows chords to be heard - but only based on the activity of her voice, drawing attention to things happening behind the curtain, invisible systems, algorithms.
The album also features the previously released standalone slice of euphoria, Pulses of Information — described by UK mag Clash as “typically entrancing, Pulses of Information seems to encourage a form of internal dialogue, between our inner and outer selves.”
Overflow was premiered by the Alexander Whitley Dance Company in May 2021 at the Sadler’s Wells in London. The score was originally released by Erased Tapes on vinyl and CD as well as digital formats on December 3 2021.

"I'm not gonna lie," laughs John Keek, "I'm just trying to write sexy songs." The LA-based musical polymath is never not grinning as he talks a mile a minute about his new project, Do You Love John Keek?, released on Vegyn’s imprint PLZ Make it Ruins. Full of swooning keys and strings mingling with R&B melodies, it's a release that asks you, earnestly, to fall in love. It's heartfelt, romantic, and a little goofy. And as promised, it's also unreservedly sexy.
John's deep velvet voice was honed in the church, when he was growing up in Las Vegas. He was inspired by the gospel he sang at church, along with romantic heroes including Todd Rundgren, Drake, and The-Dream.

Endearing Montreal-based trio Afternoon Bike Ride announce their forthcoming second album ‘Glossover’, set to be released in February 2023 via Friends of Friends Consisting of Lia Kurihara (vocals, guitar, programming), David Tanton (vocals, guitar, drums, programming), and Éloi Le Blanc-Ringuette (vocals, keys, drums, programming), Afternoon Bike Ride is a lo-fi folk trio providing a comfort zone in audio form. It's in the name. When all three artists are together, their chemistry culminates into one organic and lush sound Sonics that feel natural and freeing, as if fireside with a handful of microphones and instruments and toys "An audio diary," the band describes, "of what we know will be our most cherished memories " The band has released a series of cohesive projects where field recordings blend with ambient, acoustic, folk, and pop A cauldron of genres they stir during each song With precision, Afternoon Bike Ride presents a soothing sound all their own, one that continues to expand and deliver with each new release
Their second album ‘Glossover’ is genreless, yet familiar It’s an album simultaneously beside a campfire and within a cafe It's with you on a long car ride, and while helping a loved one or checking in on a friend Bliss and loss, and love and grief breathing as one There's a "found footage" aspect, with quiet backup vocals and fluttering harmonies that sound like angels flying away There are outtakes that feel like we're behind-the-scenes Cozy and sincere Talking while cooking, daydreaming in a sunswept daze While their sound is unique and very much their own, this band is still relatively new The three artists gathered traction with their debut EP ‘Sugarbloom’ in 2019 and further evolved with their self-titled debut LP in 2021 While initial stems and demos were emailed back and forth, the group put the finishing touches on ‘Glossover’ while in a cabin in St Donat, Quebec "We've been pegged as three separate entities," the band says, "and for this album especially, we really felt as one unit writing and creating for ABR and nothing else "
Throughout their new album and discography, we hear songs that speak on self growth Songs about escaping responsibilities and getting away with the person you love. Songs that feel nostalgic, connected to friends "At the end of the day," Lia says, "the lesson is to prioritize love– love for one’s self, family, community, planet "

Dwaal Troupe is a part of, if not one of the main catalysts for, the current young and growing indie scene in Chicago Bandleader and guitarist Kai Slater spearheads the zine Hallogallo, the title of which pays tribute to 70’s Krautrock band Neu!. The zine archives the magic of this burgeoning scene, along with providing a vehicle for connecting with other bands nationally and across the globe for interviews and reviews It also includes essays on social issues, art, and countercultural thinking. And, like Dwaal Troupe’s sound, it features an artistic sensibility that is full of color, detailed collages, and a DIY aesthetic that draws comparisons to the best of The Elephant 6 Recording Co back in their heyday Lucky Dog is the band’s second full-length release, but the first to be released on a label and on vinyl. Self-released at the end of 2021 in a digital-only format, the album see its debut on vinyl and an expanded presence on digital streaming platforms in early 2023, and we could not be more excited to have Dwaal Troupe join the Ally roster as our first US-based band.
According to their website, “Dwaal Troupe was formed by two children in an attic just outside of Chicago, in a town found beneath the woods.” The allure continues: “Sung was their hearts onto that glistening tape, the whales wailing through thei r chest, and melodies growing from poppy flowers in their fertile spines” among the hissing and pulsing of their creative DIY recording prowess.
In her 2022 Bandcamp Daily profile “A Guide to Chicago’s Young Indie Scene,” Anna White describes Dwaal Troup’s music as having a “circus-y playfulness,” akin to Elephant 6 recording artists – “still lo-fi, but favoring off-kilter acoustics and harmonies.” This aesthetic shines through in the shimmering power of the first single from the album, the title track “Lucky Dog,” for which Slater created the perfect companion music video (accessible on the Ally YouTube Channel here: https://youtu.be/lpvMhET-7EI) Other standout tracks include “Shakes the Walls at Night,” “I’ve Told You Better,” and “Start A House Fire.”
Joining Slater in Dwaal Troupe are Charlie Johnston, Francis Brazas, and Desi Kaercher. Slater also plays guitar in Lifeguard while Johnston is in the duo Post Office Winter two more bands who are part of this close-knit youth-driven music community in the windy city, along with other friends like Horsegirl (Matador), Friko, and more.

Reviews of T54:
“Dwaal Troupe’s music has an almost circus-y playfulness. The band features Kai Slater, who doubles as the guitarist of Lifeguard, and it’s clear the ‘90s indie rock influence carries through both projects. But if Lifeguard is a contemporary cousin of SST, Dwaal Troupe leans closer to Elephant 6 still lo-fi, but favoring off-kilter acoustics and harmonies to shredding guitars ” – Anna White, Bandcamp Daily
- “Dwaal Troupe play fuzzy melodic indie rock. Get into their goodness immediately, please. ” – Patrick McNamara, Oh My Rockness

Originally planned as a 10 -song tribute featuring CHRIS CONNELLY ’S versions of NICO songs, at the end of the recording, Connelly decided to write a parallel album of his own compositions spanning the life of one of the most unique, tragic and misunderstood female artists in the history of music. The result is the 24 -track EULOGY TO CHRISTA: A TRIBUTE TO THE MUSIC & MYSTIQUE OF NICO, to be released on November 11th, 2022 (in the US by Shipwrecked Industries and in the UK by Easy Action). Working again with producer CHRIS BRUCE, EULOGY TO CHRISTA sees Connelly purposefully adopting the personas of NICO, LOU REED, and JOHN CALE – even WARHOL makes a cameo! The album was inspired by the brilliant book, YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL AND YOU ARE ALONE by author JENNIFER OTTER BICKERDICKE, who contributed to the liner notes for the album. She writes, “This is a record to be played at full blast, all the way through, as a commemoration not just to Nico the person, the musician, but to art for art’s sake, for making something because it is important and needs to be done – an idea that is as rare and precious as Nico herself. ” Even the photos used of Nico in the album artwork have particular significance: the cover shot was taken by author ALASTAIR MACKAY from the audience at the Nite Club in Edinburgh in 1981, where a 15 -year-old Connelly was also in attendance. The inside photo of Nico was taken in 1982 by Chicago photography legend HOWARD GOLDBLATT. The Nico material spans from her first Jimmy Page -composed single B-side through The Velvet Underground, to her intense and unique solo recordings up until she died. Originally released on CD in Germany in 1992, CD versions have sold for as much £40 second hand some 20 years later. Now time to make it available to the world again. The first eight tracks on this are often considered more raw than the recordings on the 1971 Way We Live album as these were done in the preceding 12 months to that album’s release of the same tracks - ie these are the original masters!!! A great selection of rare bonus tracks and an 8 page cd booklet with some rare images complete the package. William Doyle - Slowly Arranged: 2016-2019
4LP boxset - white vinyl - edition of 300. Doyle self-released a string of ambient-leaning albums, The Dream Derealised, Lightnesses Vol I & II and Near Future Residence, which are now to receive a first vinyl pressing via Tough Love as both a highly limited four LP box set, titled ‘Slowly Arranged: 2016-19’. The Dream Derealised is a collection of nine abstract, lo-fi pieces that were recorded during the summer of 2016. Lightnesses Vol. I & II sees Doyle create what we might understand as true ambient music – that is, music intended for the background that wasn’t composed as such, but allowed to blossom out of the setting of some rules and parameters, played by sounds he created and then resampled. The deceptively simple, droning pieces are unlike anything Doyle has made before or since. Near Future Residence is music for an imagined place based on real ideas; the soundtrack for an ecologically sustainable housing development somewhere in a not-too-distant future Britain. The eleven instrumental pieces here come from a place of optimism, imagining a future that is based on cooperation, community and ecological urbanism.

Tom Rapp - A Journal Of The Plague Year
Blue Matter Records
What a privilege to start a new record label with an album of such quality. As we're sure most of you will know, Tom was the front man of the legendary US psychedelic/folk band PEARLS BEFORE SWINE. Recording for the ESP label in the 60s, then moving to Reprise, PBS left us a legacy of strange, beautiful music. In the early 70s Tom went solo, recording more albums for Reprise and Blue Thumb. He played gigs with Pink Floyd, Crazy Horse, Patti Smith and many more before calling time in 1976, and becoming a lawyer. Renewed interest in Tom and PBS in the late 90s led to him making some staggeringly good live appearances. Then in 1999 he released his first album for over 25 years - 'A Journal Of The Plague Year'. Featuring appearances from Damon Krukowski and Naomi Yang (of Galaxie 500 fame) and Masakai Batoh of Japanese band Ghost, it came out on the British label Woronzow to great acclaim. This is the first ever reissue of 'Plague Year' and it comes with the original artwork and lyric insert, as a limited vinyl edition of 400 and a CD version of just 200. Tragically, Tom died in 2018 aged 70. Blue Matter would like to thank Lynn Madison-Rapp & Ade Shaw for their help with making this reissue a reality. The Clocks' was originally issued in 2007 as a CD -only limited edition of 110 for members of 'The Bevis Frond Online Community'. It comprised 19 previously unissued tracks. Most of these were home demos featuring just Nick Saloman on all instruments and vocals. It has never been reissued in any format. Blue Matter are reissuing it for the first time as a vinyl double album and limited CD. Due to certain circumstances, three of the original tracks could not be used, so these have been replaced these with another three previously unheard tracks from Saloman's extensive archives. These songs include the seven minute 'She's Taken It All', originally intended for 2004's 'Hit Squad' album, but dropped due to timing constraints. The beautiful 'You Better Make Do' and the edgy 'Devil Doll' have also been added. We are delighted to be able to make this 'long lost' album available once again.
