Redeye Label of the Month Q&A
When and where did the label begin?
We (myself and Matt) started up way back in 1998 with a plan to just release a series of 12” EPs and with no actual idea how the hell you actually released records or how in the hell you run a record label. I’d been a promoter putting on shows in Brighton, UK, anything from The Prodigy to Gil Scott Heron, but was a musician on the side, so the whole thing was a front for my creative endeavors. We needed a guinea pig, we found Blue States, and quickly realized our guinea pig was actually going somewhere.
What is the meaning behind the name for the label?
No meaning at all was the aim, and reckon we perfectly succeeded in that. Neither me or Matt have been to Memphis, but need to try and change that in 2023. Anyone want to put us up for a night?
How has the label changed since it started?
Hugely, in the sense that, back then we were releasing music that could loosely be boxed off in one genre. Honestly after 3-4 years of that we were looking for something new, and at that precise point the Go! Team demos landed on my desk. That debut album Thunder Lightning Strike went on to sell hundreds of thousands round the world, and stylistically opened up so many more doors for us.
Describe the general makeup of your team at the label. The label itself is run by myself and my brother Matt, ably supported by Sam and Sophia. We keep things tight, and as the artists on the label develop we expand the teams as we go. It’s probably time to look at a new hire though, so if anyone’s looking for a job in North London…
Is there a genre that you would consider to be the label’s “signature style,” or is it a mix?
It’s definitely a mix, and we wouldn’t have it any other way. We find ourselves going down various paths for a while, and then taking sharp left turns, and if we couldn’t switch it up I honestly don’t think we’d still be doing this.
How would you describe your overall ambitions and goals as a label from when you first started compared to now? When we started it was literally a dream to have just one of our records in Rough Trade. Then it’s like, getting your first bit of press (it was all print press back then), your first bit of radio, you start ticking these things off, and you realize there’s always another thing to tick off, and that was a huge thing through those first years. Oddly that part of it never changes, the unending quest to get people to hear about and hopefully love the music we are passionate about. We know you can’t choose, but what’s been your favorite label release, and why?
Can we have 3? Blue States “Nothing Changes Under the Sun,” without which we’d not be doing this any more, The Go! Team “Thunder Lightning Strike” which took us round the world and showed us anything is possible, and Field Music’s “Measure,” which reminded us why we love running a label so much after a time when running a label had been, for us at least, at its very hardest
What is your stance on color vinyl? What’s the most unique color LP or overall packaging you’ve ever seen or released?
I think what started as a bit of fun has got out of hand. It feels harder to buy a standard black LP at a reasonable price than a tricolor die cut LP with bonus 7” signed by the artists for the price of a new car. That being said, we’ve yet to do a zoetrope LP, so keep ‘em peeled in ‘23.
Forget about the vinyl boom - how are you and your label responding to the ever-increasing popularity of cassette tapes? CDs??
We bloody love CDs. Low cost, quick turnaround, if you put them in a wallet less environmental impact. Format of the future I tell you.
How would you describe the average fan of the label?
As beautiful on the inside as they are on the outside
What in your opinion has been the biggest change in the music industry from when you first started compared to now?
I mean aside from, for example, the death and rebirth of vinyl and the rise of streaming, the fact that artists have to always feed the content machine, the end of print media in the US, the near death of dedicated music retail chains, not much has changed.
If you had to start a new sub-label, what would it be called and what kind of music would it be geared towards? We’ve got enough on our plate, cause we’re now working with some affiliated labels: Daylight Savings, which is Field Music’s label, with upcoming releases from David Brewis and SLUG, with more in the pipeline. Then there’s Zen FC, Yard Act’s label, home of their debut EP, and we’re expecting a lot more from them, and also Permanent Creeps, a label which is incubating some great new artists.
Want to shout out a personal favorite record store or retail establishment? Now’s your chance: Being based in the UK we’ve got so many great stores, but got to shout out my local Flashback in Crouch End, London. Over in the US big ups to Electric Fetus for being top.
They say our sun will explode in about 5 billion years or so- how would you like the label to be remembered? By the fact that all our platinum sellers came in the second half of our forty year existance.

IDLES released ‘CRAWLER’ on November 12, 2021. It’s an album of reflection and healing amid a worldwide pandemic that stretched the planet’s collective mental and physical health to the breaking point.
Frontman JOE TALBOT says, “We want people who’ve gone through trauma, heartbreak, and loss to feel like they’re not alone, and also how it is possible to reclaim joy from those experiences.” IDLES albums have always been anchored by these overarching themes, but the ability of the band to juxtapose beauty and rage with humor and drama has never felt more satisfying than on ‘CRAWLER’.

Recorded in the same sessions as ABitof Previous, LateDevelopers doesn’t feel like a collection of lesser-than songs that weren’t good enough to go on the “real” record. Rather, it’s an embrace of the freedom that comes with a jumbo-sized canvas, skilled students left unsupervised to paint whatever picture they feel like.
While I shudder to do the thing in a bio where I try to describe music to you with words, Late Developers takes you on a journey as the band floats through genres with ease – from the frantic Billy Bragg-with-hella-flute-energy of the opening track, “Juliet Naked,” and what I think might be Stevie Jackson’s best song (“So in the Moment”), into a legit all-out radio-ready dance party in the third quarter of the record (“When You’re Not With Me,” “Do You Follow”) which includes a Belle & Sebastian first, a co-write with young pop composer Pete Ferguson (“I Don’t Know What You See in Me”). They then unearth a 1994-era pre-Belle and Sebastian tune, “When the Cynics Stare Back From the Wall” with the help of Camera Obscura’s Tracyanne Campbell right before they bring you home at the end with a true bop (“Late Developers”).

American Dreams Records
Marvin Tate’s D-Settlement were Chicago’s bestkept secret: a trailblazing, diverse band mixing R&B, soul, punk and funk with biting wit and political commentary. Led by Marvin Tate —a poet, artist, playwright and raconteur who wore pipe cleaners in his hair—and backed up by a dynamic cast of characters, their concerts were the stuff of legend. They stole the show from acts like Antibalas and Bernie Worrell. They addressed transgender rights, gentrification and gun violence before they were trendy. But if you wanted to hear their music, you were out of luck. Until now. American Dreams Records presents Marvin Tate’s D-Settlement: a deluxe 4xLP/3xCD box set, designed by Field of Grass (Numero Group, Paradise of Bachelors), collecting their three albums with an oral history book of the band. If you like Angel Bat Dawid, Theaster Gates, avery r. young—here’s the blueprint. Catalog #: 22-24 ADR 4xLP box set: 727431748683 3xCD box set: 727431748690 Box lot of 10

LAURIE STYVERS Gemini Girl
THE COMPLETE HUSH RECORDINGS
LAURIE STYVERS may not be well-known within the milieu of 1970s cult singer-songwriters, but anyone who experiences the bewitching innocence on display on her albums Spilt Milk (1971) and The Colorado Kid (1973) will surely fall in love with this enigmatic figure, whose records spill over with the baroque flavors of late 1960s-early 1970s British pop.
Born in Texas, Laurie Styvers was an American student in late 1960s London when she joined the legendary folk-pop outfit Justine. Her vocals in the group and her own evocative songwriting stood out, and she signed with Shel Talmy and Hugh Murphy’s Hush Productions. Produced by Murphy and arranged by Tom Parker and David Whitaker, with the cream of UK session personnel, recording sessions revealed Styvers to be a gifted songsmith with a captivating vocal presence, redolent of Carole King, Karen Carpenter or Judee Sill. Despite her single ‘Beat The Reaper’ receiving encouraging airplay on BBC Radio 1, the relative commercial failure of both albums, and a disastrous engagement at LA’s Troubadour, saw her ardor dampen for a recording career. Laurie died in 1998 a cult figure that had faded into obscurity, her seraphic face and voice frozen in time.
Gemini Girl: The Complete Hush Recordings is the document of Laurie Styvers’ career her music has long demanded. Drawn from the original reels, the remastered audio sparkles, and the release boasts a full album’s worth of unreleased material, including demos, alternate versions and some superb unheard songs. The 48-page booklet, with an essay by compilation producer Alec Palao, delves deep into the legend of Laurie, based upon those who knew her, and is extensively illustrated with photos and memorabilia. Housed in a deluxe package, the 2CD set Gemini Girl is the last word on the
magic of this fascinating and mysterious artist
Redeye Worldwide lanie@redeyeworldwide.com
Three new archival releases from Ndeya that showcase Jon Hassell and group in the late 1980s exploring a radical tangent on his Fourth World sensibility.
During this period Hassell was inspired by the increasingly innovative production techniques being used in hip-hop, in particular the hyper-collaged sampledelic barrage of the Bomb Squad’s work with Public Enemy, hearing it as a kind of extension of the tape splicing that Teo Macero brought to his work with Miles Davis. He began to incorporate more of this aesthetic into his own music, playing over loops of his own performances and riffing on angular juxtapositions of noise, rhythm and melody. The resulting sonic stew is a kind of futuristic sci-fi funk with an appropriately melted production aesthetic – instruments and samples jumping to the forefront then disappearing in the manner of the best dub records.
The Living City captures the Jon Hassell Group in September 1989 performing as part of an audio-visual installation inside the World Financial Center Winter Garden in New York City, with Brian Eno mixing the band live.
Psychogeography is a situationist re-thinking of the 1990 City: Works Of Fiction album, a carefully edited sequence of alternate takes, demos and studio jams put together by Jon Hassell in 2014 using Debordian philosophy as his guide.
Both are being made on vinyl for the first time, each album cut across four sides by Stefan Betke aka Pole, and presented as deluxe gatefold vinyl editions with printed inner sleeves containing commentary from Hassell, Eno and new interviews with some of the other musicians involved, alongside archival images from the period and download card for the full album
AVEY TARE 7s
OVERVIEW
You remember how it was, don’t you, back in the Spring of 2020? Knowing so little about what any of us should do, so many of us crawled inside our quarters to find new obsessions or indulge the familiar ones, unencumbered by anything else we could do. At home in the woods on the eastern edge of Asheville, N.C., Avey Tare took the latter path, sequestering himself in his small home studio to sort the songs he’d written and recorded with friends in the instantly distant before times—Animal Collective’s Time Skiffs, of course, their astonishing document of communal creativity a quarter-century into the enterprise. He often worked there for 12 hours a day, tweaking mixes alone, save the birds and bears and his girlfriend, Madelyn. By Fall, though, it was done, so what next? How else should Avey now occupy himself in his cozy little room? The answer became 7s, his fourth solo album (and first in four years), an enchanting romp through the playground of his head. He wasn’t, however, going to do it alone.
If Animal Collective has forever been defined by its charming inscrutability, Avey surrenders to a new intimacy and candor with 7s. During the first week of January 2021, Avey began making regular drives to his friend Adam McDaniel’s Drop of Sun Studios to give guts and flesh and color to the skeletal demos he’d made at home. The plot for 7s, then, was set: trusting, intuitive, exploratory collaboration among friends, after a Winter without it. These songs are like overstuffed jelly jars, cracking so that the sweetness oozes out into unexpected shapes. Still, the sweetness—that is, Avey’s compulsory hooks— remains at the center, the joy inside these Rorschach blots.

It’s fitting that Philadelphia
Filipczak named their band @ (pronounced “At”) — a symbol that calls to mind the detachment of an email exchange or a Twitter mention. The folk-pop duo created their debut album Mind Palace Music almost entirely remotely from, sending each other recordings over iMessage from their respective cities throughout fall/winter 2020. But although its creators were 100 miles away, the 11-track album gleams with a sense of closeness, tied together with @’s penchant for deeply personal and candid lyrics.
With an affinity for blending digital with analog elements, @ describe Mind Palace Music as “hyperfolk,” though the record never feels self-indulgent — hitting the sweet spot between pleasantly familiar and refreshingly innovative. “We were pretty aware of trying to make something well-crafted that would hold up,” Filipczak says. “I was stoked that I could show some of the tracks to my grandma and she would be able to dig it. It probably doesn’t sound that different from, like, Simon and Garfunkel to her.”
Rose and Filipczak are just as inspired by the thoughtful delicacy of ambient pioneers like Laurie Spiegel as they are by the timeless quality of singer-songwriters like Vashti Bunyan. You can feel the influence of those ‘70s folk greats on songs like “Where’d You Put Me,” a drumfree incantation that culminates with a flute solo from Filipczak. Elsewhere, @ evoke the tender drone and foolproof melodies of Elliott Smith, Alex G, or Sparklehorse, like on the spare acoustic ditty “Friendship is Frequency” or the bittersweet “Cut From Toxic Cloth”: “While I’m waiting for my mind and face to sync/I smile to my heart and I think/I like you just the way you are,” Filipczak murmurs on the latter. A subtle eeriness looms in the background throughout Mind Palace Music, preventing it from feeling too outdated or hackneyed.
@ test their limits further on songs like the chugging closer “My Garden,” where Rose and Filipczak’s striking arrangements build to a triumphant coda as Rose mulls over the frustrations of a relationship’s natural ebbs and flows and the “curse” of desire: “I don’t want intensity, no/Just a way to warmth and amity,” she sings. @ know that some of the most rewarding moments in life don’t come easily, and Mind Palace Music is no exception. But sometimes, even the hard work flows out naturally: “It was truly a something from nothing type of experience,” Filipczak says. “We just shared a bunch of music until we started collaborating, and then once we started, we didn’t want to stop.”

The 1991 debut album from Canadian hard rockers Harem Scarem is one of the most notorious, even legendary, albums to come out north of the border during the ‘90s. The Muslim Highlife of Alhaji Waziri Oshomah, Alhaji Waziri Oshomah — the Oyoyo King, the Godfather of Afemai Music, the Etsako Super Star, Mr. Please Please Please, Mr. Dynamite — returns with Vol. 2.
Along with the other four volumes of the series, Vol. 2 is now available—for the very first time!—as part of a complete set (in a box): Vol 1 - 5 (1978 - 1985) (November 4, 2022).
Waziri hails from a small part of Edo State in southern Nigeria called Afemailand, known for being a harmonious region where Muslims and Christians live—and dance—together. And there, as a devout Muslim and an exemplar of religious piety in his community, Waziri’s music fuses Etsako/Afemai folk styles with pan-Nigerian highlife and pop to create a sublime vehicle for his Islamic philosophy that gets everyone—Muslims, Christians, whoever—on the dancefloor.
Vol. 2 focuses on Waziri’s illustrious mid-career output—the music he created during the years leading up to and after he performed his first hajj. Every song here (one of which you might recognize from The Muslim Highlife) strikes his signature balance of traditional music, highlife, and funk, as he entreats you to stay on the straight and narrow, though there’s nothing straight about his beat.
Portland artist MAITA’s latest offering, Loneliness is an unorthodox release for the prolific writer, in that the track listing is exactly the same as 2022’s I Just Want to Be Wild For You. Following the release of IJWTBWFU, MAITA felt the urge to record a quiet, introspective record, allowing the same songs to be heard in a different light, closer to how they were originally written. The once bombastic ‘‘Honey, Have I Lost It All,’’ an ode to fearing writers block and obsolescence, comes across as gauzy yearning, while “Pastel Concrete,” shows up not as the jaunty surf-pop audiences are familiar with, instead a wistful reflection of the shallow depths of Southern California sunshine. Throughout the record, songwriter Maria Maita-Keppeler, accompanied only by her nylon string guitar, re-imagines I Just Want to Be Wild For You, cementing her place among the echelon of today’s greatest songwriters.

Currently based in Berlin, Pedro Ricardo has been releasing music for the past eight years under different aliases via labels such as Wolf Music and his own imprint Hear, Sense and Feel. An eclectic DJ and selector, he hosts a radio show on South London’s radio Balamii, guested on Mafalda’s NTS show and can be found playing in clubs across all Europe.
Stylistically, Ricardo became entranced with jazz from an early age, while also becoming enamoured with folk music – rooted in his Portugal childhood, now encompassing sounds from Cape Verde, Brazil, and Spain along the way. He intertwines these instrumental influences with field recordings, and electronics, on Soprem Bons Ventos
“The album translates to ‘Good Winds Blow’, shares Ricardo. “This idea of good winds blowing is intertwined with the feeling of missing something, and sadness. On a positive note, there is still an overarching sense that happiness also lies ahead. Soprem Bons Ventos represents an ode to the past, to those who came before me, connecting with my present and imagining the future.”

● 300k plays on Spotify
● First single dropped from Captain Planet’s upcoming EP “Sounds Like Home” inspired by 70's and early 80's funk
Captain Planet has teamed up with 2 long-time collaborators Zuzuka Poderosa & Raphael Futura for a new Brazilian disco funk song, "Moqueca.” The song harkens back to Brazil's legendary funk parties in the 70's and early 80's - where sound systems bumped legends like Tim Maia, Sandra De Sa & Gilberto Gil - while infusing some fresh contemporary energy and extra thump for today's dancefloors. Zuzuka's bright vocals bounce over a bubbly bassline, syncopated percussion and wormy vintage synthesizers, while an additional punch is brought in the form of horn arrangements by the prolific maestro Todd Simon, another frequent Captain Planet collaborator.
“Moqueca” takes inspiration from the Brazilian dish of the same name, a nationally famous fish stew that varies across the regions of Brazil. In her lyrics, Zuzuka talks about the origins and variations of Moqueca, starting with the style from Espirito Santo, her home state, and continuing to Moqueca Baiana, from Bahia, which incorporates African influences and ingredients. The result is a song that is as much an homage to Brazilian music as it is its food, culture and people.
The song is the first single from Captain Planet's upcoming "Sounds Like Home” EP, which finds the producer turning towards more retro, analogue and live band elements, all with an eye towards his signature “Gumbo Funk” of global sounds. The “Moqueca” 7” is out on Brooklyn’s Bastard Jazz Recordings February 3rd.

inspired by the book "The Road" by Cormac McCarthy, ILUITEQ's fourth album, "Reflections From The Road," expands the novel's theme, where human beings are overwhelmed by an ordeal that completely changes the course of their lives. Events that suddenly interrupt the "ordinary movements" of life in a new, unpredictable, and often dangerous way. A strong sense of motion permeates Reflections From The Road's ten tracks in a new and unexpected way compared to previous works by the Italian ambient duo. With "Reflections From The Road," ILUITEQ explores new music territories, strongly contrasting pristine textures and glitchy sounds.

Unbeknownst to its members, Index For Working Musik was born on an evening in late 2019 amidst the discovery of a collection of faded b&w photocopies that had been marinating on the floor of a urine -alley in the Gothic Quarter of Barcelona.
Back home in London’s cursed smog, they moved themselves and their 8 -track studio into a basement in E8, where the project’s gravitational pull gained strength, quickly developing into an unexpected collective with the incorporation of drummer Bobby Voltaire, double bass player E. Smith and guitarist J. Loftus. As the world shifted around them and the Plague Years followed, it became increasingly clear that they were not going to leave that small basement room. The scarcity of light or outer world presence was less a limitation, instead the main tool at hand, allowing the recording to stretch for boundaryless days in architectural isolation, and forcing them to make straight forward free guitar music, adopting a ‘first thought, best thought ’ approach.
The result of this period became a collection of music they were to name Dragging the Needlework for the Kids at Uphole, to be released via Tough Love on 17th February. 35 minutes of repeat phrased guitars, slow -clipped drums and dulcet vocals where the recurring landscape is the desert. Reel -to reel-loops of Afghan music compete with the found sound overlays of voices recorded at the queue of the pharmacy and drum machines borrowed from Spanish heroes, channelling both far-off climes and snippets from a closer reality. It ’s a strange psychic brew, built of imagined mysticism and domestic realities, of fever dreams and days that stretched into weeks of months.
What was sparked by that discovery in the Gothic Quarter was actually a realisation that what they were looking for was with them all the while, buried as it was in piles of voice memos and recorded guitar feedback. Men Possessed By God they may be not: it was self -possession that was to guide their way in the end.
“Life, despite all its destructive changes, remains indestructibly powerful and joyful. ”

With an inimitable voice as John Prine described, “like you’ve heard, but not really,” and unforgettable melodies rooted in hymns, gospel, and old country music, Iris DeMent is simply one of the finest singer-songwriters in America as well as one of our fiercest advocates for human rights. Her debut record Infamous Angel, which just celebrated its 30th anniversary, was recently named one of the “greatest country albums of all time” by Rolling Stone, and the two albums that followed, My Life and The Way I Should, were both nominated for GRAMMYs. From there, DeMent released three records on her own label, Flariella Records, the most recent of which, The Trackless Woods (2015), was hailed as “a quietly powerful triumph” by The Guardian. DeMent’s songs have also been featured in film (True Grit) and television (The Leftovers) and recorded by numerous artists. Fittingly, she received the Americana Music Trailblazer Award in 2017.
On her transcendent new record, Workin’ On A World, her seventh album, Iris DeMent faces the modern world — as it is right now — with its climate catastrophe, pandemic illness, and epidemic of violence and social injustice — and not only asks us how we can keep working towards a better world, but implores us to love each other, despite our very different ways of seeing.
“one of the great voices in popular contemporary music.” - NPR

Beggars Arkive will release a long-awaited vinyl reissue of THE CULT’S second album LOVE on February 24th. Two editions will be available. Red vinyl is exclusive to independent retail, Black vinyl will be available everywhere.
THE CULT is fronted by Ian Astbury on vocals and Billy Duffy on guitar. Their music and albums at this point need no introduction as they have cemented themselves over the years since they began in 1983, as one of the greatest rock bands around.
Love was the Cult’s second album, originally released in 1985. It was their breakthrough and produced many singles including “Rain”, “Revolution” and the epic anthem “She Sells Sanctuary” - songs that still resonate today - in fact “She Sells Sanctuary” was recently featured in Season Two of the hit TV show Euphoria. The album eventually defined their career, but at the time, it flew in the face of everything that was going on in music.
Ian discussed the sonic choice with Metal Hammer a few years ago…
“There were certain guidelines in the post-punk, new wave movement, and that was to stay clearly away from long hair and guitar solos,” says Ian Astbury. “So for us that was like, ‘Great! That’s exactly where we’re gonna start!’ If that’s where we’re not supposed to be according to some erudite journalist, then that’s exactly where we’re starting. I wanted to find out what the taboo was all about. Then you hear Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin and The Doors, and suddenly it’s like, ‘What is this? We’re not supposed to listen to this? You’re kidding me!’ We’ve always had a punk rock attitude, but it’s less reactionary and more dynamic. Rebels respond to a situation in a way that’s not just being contrary, there’s a visceral and energetic response.”
“Love continues to resonate because it dared to be a balls-out British rock album at a time when such values were routinely viewed with suspicion. Above all, Love is an album of great and ageless songs played by one of the greatest bands of this or any age.” - METAL HAMMER
From the beautiful to the jarring, our intrepid explorer Callahan charts a passage through all kinds of territory, pitting dreams of dreams against dreams of reality. When he makes it back to us, his old friends ‘n acquaintances, we are reminded how much of a world it can be out there and in here as well, where we live everyday.
“ YTI⅃AƎЯ picks at the fabric of the universe and if it doesn’t always find the answers it wants, the expansive musical backdrop underlines its slightly ecstatic, questing spirit: here Mark E. Smith, there Marquee Moon.” UNCUT
“Keen observations about ordinary occurrences are interspersed with flashes of mythological wonder, and when he’s not sure what to say next, his band takes flight and speaks through music alone.”
Wall Street Journal
“Callahan accomplishes the strange feat of sounding comforting and unsettling at the same time. You can settle into these numbers and think about a bright future even while he pictures burning buildings and terrible situations. It’s the singer’s own version of reality, but it probably isn’t that far from whatever’s actually out there. If it’s a little bent and a little brighter at the same time, it somehow only feels truer.”
Dusted
“More than ever, the music reaches for transcendence .these are Callahan’s most digressive and intuitive songs, and his finest work as a bandleader YTI⅃AƎЯ reaches Callahan’s aims to reawaken something primal in his listener at its most diffuse.” Pitchfork

Travel, the 19th studio album by Australian improvisational trio The Necks, documents their recent practice of starting each day in the studio with a 20-minute trio improvisation. The recordings offer some of their most ecstatic and captivating music cut to tape.
As bassist Lloyd Swanton puts it: “It’s a really nice communal activity to bring us together in focus each day, and some lovely music has resulted from it.” Although a straight “live” improvisation has never been recorded in the studio by the band, these tracks (save for some light overdubs and postproduction) feel closest to their 30 years of celebrated live performances.
In 2017 Stephen O’Malley’s Ideologic Organ label released the band’s lauded Unfold, which first offered up this uncharacteristic studio work: four sub-20-minute pieces - instead of the typical 60+ minute arc for which the band is known - along with an obfuscated track list which leaves play order to thelistener’s hand. The album quickly sold out, and persists as a treasure in collections or as a high-priced ‘Want’ on Discogs.
Travel marks a return to this double-LP format, offered in a beautiful gatefold package that features photography by Traianos Pakioufakis and impeccable mastering by Doug Henderson.
Geoff Dyer ‘Working the Room’
“(The Necks) are sometimes categorised as a jazz trio - which is fine as long as this is immediately qualified by adding that they’ve completely re-conceived the idea of the jazz trio.”
Richard Williams, The Guardian
“To the often spiky disciplines of minimalism, systems music and free improvisation, this remarkable trio bring a satisfying sense of long-form development... Ascetic in outline, but suffused with a warm humanity, their pieces are studded with minor epiphanies on the way to a larger sense of emotional fulfilment.”
New York Times
“The Greatest Trio on Earth”
Los Angeles Times
“A magic act masquerading as a piano trio, this Australian group delivers long-form improvisations that shift with such patient beauty that it casts a bit of a trance. You’ll seldom spend an hour that passes so quickly — and rewardingly.”
The Wire
“Tonal, accessible, and yet profoundly challenging... The Necks are singular... Yielding things no one else does.”
New York City Jazz Record
“No other performing unit can reach into a remotely similar sonic area... almost as if their music is disembodied from conventional human touch, arriving from some unknown abstract source.”

U.S. GIRLS Bless This Mess
•
The trajectory of transformation achieved by Meg Remy under her U.S. Girls banner is as sweeping as it is singular, unrivalled by nearly any North American artist of the past two decades. From crusty, crouch-core basement floors in Philadelphia and Chicago, crooning through delay pedals over grainy loops, to touring the planet as front woman for an explosive eight-piece art-soul orchestra, her vision and craft have honed ceaselessly over the project’s 15-year existence. Remy’s latest creation expands the palette even further, fusing the muses of funk, motherhood, Greek myth, slow jams, and the radical disorientation of joy into an electric tapestry of anthems, aches, and awakenings: Bless This Mess U.S. Girls operates on a uniquely out-of-time wavelength, alternately wronged and rueful, classic but contemporary, bruised vignettes of poetic Americana through a feminist lens. Bless This Mess marks both a divergence from and deepening of Remy’s songbook, more at peace with her restless truths and moods. Long-time collaborator (as well as vocal engineer, multi-instrumentalist, husband, and co-parent) Maximilian Turnbull plays a key role facilitating these fluid muses. As artists and partners their rapport at this point is thoroughly symbiotic, able to tap into subtle veins of humor and heaviness, rhythm, and reverie. Conceived in tandem with the conception and birth of twin boys, the songs were pieced together stem by stem with a vast cast of collaborators (Alex Frankel of Holy Ghost!, MarkerStarling, Ryland Blackinton of Cobra Starship, Basia Bulat, Roger Manning Jr. of Jellyfish and Beck,) and audio engineers (Neal H Pogue, Ken Sluiter, Steve Chahley, Maximilian Turnbull).

Soul Jazz Records Presents STUDIO ONE FUNK
Firstly, a heavyweight special limited edition one-pressing only red 2xLP vinyl + download. Secondly, there is also a new special limited-edition one-off pressing edition red-pressed CD enclosed in jewel case and slipcase. And thirdly there is a very limited unique new one-off pressing red-cased cassette format (200 copies only)! 18 years on from its original release Studio One Funk remains one of our Studio One releases most in-demand titles and like all our earlier special co loured editions is sure to sell out fast!
Studio One Funk is made up of rare and unreleased Reggae Funk from the vaults of Studio One. Ever since the birth of Funk in America, the sound has been an ever-present ingredient in the melting pot of Studio One’s musical output.
The music on this release is a combination of originals, US covers and versions of existing Studio One cuts. Jackie Mittoo shows his appreciation for Booker T and The MGs, the studio group at Memphis’ famous Stax Records with ‘Hang Em High’, itself a cover of a film soundtrack by Dominic Frontiere. Incredibly this version has never before been released. Booker T’s super-funky ‘Melting Pot’ is also covered by the little-known Underground Vegetables.
Other versions include Isaac Hayes’ classic Blaxploitation soundtrack ‘Shaft’ again by Cedric Im Brooks track - another unreleased gem, straight from the tape master. Motown gets a look in with Alton’s stripped-down version of the Spinners classic ‘It’s A Shame’, written by Stevie Wonder and Syre eta. James Brown is apparent in spirit with the JBs-inspired groove on the super rare cut “Now” by Lee Arab. Lloyd Williams similarly does a fine Kingston-style version of the hardest-working man in showbusiness on ‘Reggae Feet’.
Version-wise, we have ‘Idleberg’, Cedric Im Brooks tough instrumental cut on Horace Andy’s seminal ‘Skylarking’. The little-known Prince Moonie gives us a rare DJ cut of another Horace Andy classic, ‘See A Man’s Face’.
Pablove Black’s cut of Sidewalk Doctor (A/K/A Poco Tempo) is one of a handful of Studio One releases featuring Augustus Pablo’s trademark instrument, the melodica, played by Black himself.
Add to these original cuts from Studio One’s heavyweight session players including Leroy Sibbles, Jackie Mittoo, Leroy Sibbles, Eric Frater, Leroy ‘Horsemouth’ Wallace, Richard Ace, Vin Gordon and more and you have one of the finest selections of reggae and funk you will ever hear.
"This collection goes deep into the Brentford Road vaults and unearths a rake of previously un released gems alongside hard to find classics. Heavy and inspirational, totally unique and essentially timeless."
Straight No Chaser
"An absolute treasure trove for the collector as well as being great for the ears and feet. Jackie Mittoo's 'Hang Em High' is worth the price of the album on its own." Echoes
"A superb collection that shows how much many Jamaican musicians were influenced by the heavy funk belting out of American studios from the early seventies onwards.” Touch
"The most satisfying listening experience so far in the Studio One series." The Wire
"Rare and unreleased grooves from Jamaica's house of excellence." Mojo

Soul Jazz Records’ long out of print classic ‘Studio One Funk’ collection is being re -released in three new one-off limited-edition coloured pressing 18th an niversary format editions! The title, nature morte, is the French term for still life paintings whose literal translation is “dead nature.” BIG|BRAVE color the songs of nature morte with unease, creating an air of beauty in decay, chords suspended in contemplative stillness. Robin Wattie’s experiences structuring lyrics and song forms on The Body & BIG|BRAVE’s Leaving None But Small Birds informed her work on nature morte, creating stories that, like many folk tales, are at once specific and universal. Wattie’s voice manages to be commanding and vulnerable with impressive range and intimacy. Even her gasps carve their way through the tidal crash of Mathieu Ball’s distortion wail and the pummel of Tasy Hudson’s drums. The momentum of nature morte conjures the image of a beast collapsing beneath its own weight before resiliently staggering upright to thunder onward. BIG|BRAVE convey heft from silence as deftly as they do from swaths of feedback and distortion to cathartic ends. “Distortion is key,” notes Ball. The three members recorded primarily live over the course of a week at Machines with Magnets with Seth Manchester, pushing the potential of their instruments beyond expectations. For each song the trio’s songwriting and attention to detail deliver its simple but devastating emotional power.
BIG|BRAVE, the elemental ensemble of guitarist/vocalist Robin Wattie, guitarist Mathieu Ball, and drummer Tasy Hudson, harness an earthen heaviness composed of distorted and textural drones, austere bombast, and Wattie’s heart-rending voice. Like recent collaborators The Body, BIG|BRAVE is at the forefront of reconfiguring the landscape of heavy music. The trio brandish sparseness and density like weapons, cast tense atmospheres with languid tempos and mutate feedback into eruptions of enveloping tempests. nature morte sharpens BIG|BRAVE’s ferocity and expansive sound into emotional elegies for the disenfranchised, wringing abstracted textures and pure fervence into songs of unfathomable mass.

John Bence can be described as a Savant in the world of AvantGarde classical composition, and puts his mastery on full display in his newest release with Thrill Jockey Archangels is a deep dive into the world and soundscape that Bence carefully crafts to offer a glimpse of the divine. Raised in Bristol’s burgeoning underground electronic music scene and a graduate of the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, John Bence manages to employ compositional complexity to manifest potent emotions. Bence’s acclaimed early works focused on the human experience, charting the composer’s own experiences with addiction and alcoholism in both stark minimalism and caustic noise eruptions. Having written Archangels two years into his recovery, Bence deftly threads together gauzy electronic atmospheres, brooding orchestral passages, and minimalist piano meditations. Throughout his work, he manages to finely sew together Gregorian chant, orchestral arrangements, rippling synthesizers, and field recordings to reveal new surprises at every turn. Archangels is a compelling addition to contemporary composition by an artist unbound by classical traditions.

Weather in happening. From the heart of Delhi, to Tangier Island. The burning redwood forests, the dying jet stream waters. It is happening to you and to me. We pump carbon dioxide and methane into the atmosphere by the gigaton as the cascading feedback loops of climate breakdown continue to destabilize the biosphere. Oh, the wind and rain. We have all lived it. Stunned by the unfathomable power of our Earth and a sinking derealization about our tenuous future.
Almanac Behind exists in this space. The title is both an anagram of Daniel Bachman’s name and a reference to the fact that rapid environmental changes have rendered traditional weather forecasting methods woefully unable to accurately predict our future. Over fifteen tracks, Almanac Behind guides the listener through natural disaster and its aftermath, via a series of field recordings by Bachman and his collaborators. The guitar, banjo, fiddle, and other instruments are presented in neutral modal tunings, avoiding conventional harmonic representations of mood and sentiment, and are often digitally altered in both subtle and obvious ways. At its core, Almanac Behind is powered by the sounds of the Earth, tones inherently familiar to the billions of people who have experienced extreme weather. It is an attempt to emotionally contend with and foster connection over a shared global experience.
“Barometric Cascade (Signal Collapse)” begins with wind blowing through front porch windchimes. Broken segments of cut-and-pasted slide guitar improvisations play over a tanpura-like guitar drone. The slide guitar crackles out of a thin radio speaker, achieved by broadcasting the recording to a home radio via an FM transmitter. As the storm gathers, the radio signal collapses into squelching tones. Local NOAA weather radio, “8:35 PM KHB36 (Alter Course)” cuts through the static and relays a year’s worth of emergency weather broadcasts recorded by Bachman at his home in Banco, Va. The chaotic thumps and strums of a 12-string guitar warn of the events unfolding. An emergency broadcast plays over church hymns. The signal morphs into “Bow Echo/Wall Cloud,” a series of repeating audio patterns made from traditional Appalachian rain signs rendered into WAV files.
“Gust Front (The Waiting)” follows, with solo banjo playing an uneasy cadence as winds gather in tight mountain valleys. The storm begins almost instantly in “540 Supercell,” where a now-driving banjo and frogs, recorded in the mill race behind Bachman’s house, are easily overtaken by waves of hissing rain and hail. “10:17 PM KHB36 (The Warned Area)” returns with an updated emergency alert of imminent flooding in the neighborhood. Disparate radio transmissions swell as the broadcast is overtaken by the rising water. All that remains when “Flood Stage” opens is repeating AM radio static, slowed 43 times to create a pulsing rhythmic pattern that drives through the entirety of the track. The same cut-and-paste technique used earlier is repeated here to create a buoyant slide guitar melody, like a dead log floating down a swollen river. The flood waters rise during “Inundation (The Blackout),” in which the sounds of all of Virginia’s major rivers at flood stage flow into one sonic stream. Tree limbs, pulled into the water, scream in high pitched wails. Electrical lines flail wildly as all sound condenses into a single point, then silence.
A match is lit in the darkness as “Wildfire (Smoke Over Old Rag)” begins. Here, Bachman has built a fire from field recordings, YouTube videos of Virginia wildfire responders, harmonium drone, and a beat created by rendering a photo of the sun setting behind Old Rag Mountain, red from West coast wildfire smoke, into a WAV file. “Think Before You Breathe” is audio of dying fire, significantly slowed to exaggerate its final gasps for air. The warbling guitar floats to great heights with the smoke, consistently interrupted by glitches and abrupt pitch drops. “3:24 AM KHB36 (When The World’s On Fire)” breaks out of the relative calm with the drone of hand-wound emergency radio crank underneath clips from the 2022 IPCC report, time signal radio broadcast, a smoke inhalation alert, and a performance of the Carter Family’s gospel tune “When The World’s On Fire” on slide guitar and accompaniment.
The tired and mournful banjo solo, “Daybreak (In The Awful Silence)” represents exhaustion and frustrated resignation during an extended power outage. “Grid Reactivation” comes suddenly, rushing down the lines to reach the transformer, powering on the A/C, radio, and other temporarily-muted appliances. “Five Old Messages (MadCo Alert)” await. Now, as cleanup begins, comes “Recalibration/Normalization.” The cut-andpaste technique is repeated one final time to represent disorientation of facing a new reality in the aftermath of disaster. At its end, we again hear wind rustling the porch chimes, signaling storms on the horizon. Almanac Behind ends as it began, and can be played on a loop, mirroring the cyclicality of these weather patterns. The only thing that has changed is that the listener has now also experienced them. Weather is happening.

"Fans of instrumental music and genre-defying experimentation will find a lot to enjoy in MEM MODS” - Death or Desire
Bio:
Memphis retro-futuristic groove music trio MEM NODS featuring Steve Selvidge (of The Hold Steady), Luther Dickinson (of the North Mississippi Allstars), and Paul Taylor will release their debut album 'MEM MODS, Vol. 1' February 24 on Peabody Records
Despite the trio having two bona fide guitar heroes, MEM MODS choose a different path This is groove music, funky, soulful, futuristic, fusion-adjacent, partly electronic, slightly psychedelic, and 100% Memphis. ‘Vol. 1’ is the work of three incredibly creative figures coming together on a collaboration thirty-plus years in the making With all three growing up playing music together in Memphis, TN, all with legendary fathers: Paul reared by Pat Taylor and his stepfather a member of ‘70s cult band Zuider Zee; Steve with his folk-blues artist father Sid Selvidge; and Luther, of course, kin of the legendary Jim Dickinson
The three had discussed an album together for years; but in 2020, with these booked-solid musicians suddenly facing empty calendars, it became apparent that the time had come The problem? Dickinson lived in east Nashville, TN, while Taylor had decamped to Door County, WI, with only Selvidge still in Memphis. No problem: the music was made long-distance, with tracks sent via email and thoughts sent via video messages on the app Marco Polo That approach allowed each musician more of a clean slate to stretch out and follow off-kilter artistic impulses than they might have jamming together in person
An utterly freeform survey of instrumental music, and a clarion call for the future of recording ‘MEM MODS, Vol 1’ unfurls from the speakers like a reimagined Quincy Jones score screwed and chopped with Isaac Hayes’ landmark Shaft soundtrack. That is, if the core Stax unit was backed up by Sly Stone and the Beastie Boys, and John Shaft had been plucked from the streets of Harlem and dropped into the animation panels for Fantastic Planet.
Memphis horn mainstays Marc Franklin (Don Bryant, The Bo-Keys, Robert Cray, Rev. Sekou, Wu-Tang Clan, Solomon Burke) contributes trumpet while Art Edmaiston (Amanda Shires, The Greyhounds, Cut Worms, Don Bryant, The Bo-Keys) adds saxophone Selvidge mixed the record himself Jeff Powell (Bob Dylan, B B King, Big Star, St Paul & The Broken Bones, Lucinda Williams, Al Green) cut the vinyl, which is being manufactured at Memphis Record Pressing in Memphis.

The first EP (side A) that followed, Spectrum, 14th Century, is a “prequel” to Pallett’s celebrated album Heartland, set in the same fictional world of Spectrum. Pallett: “When I realized Heartland was going to be a ‘fantasy’ album, I imagined that the Spectrum EP would serve as a map of the countryside, as one would find in the first pages of a fantasy novel.”
The second EP (side B), Plays to Please, is Pallett’s tribute to Van Dyke Parks’ arrangement style, and is their first foray into full orchestral production. In the spirit of Nilsson Plays Newman, it is a collection of interpretations of the works of songwriter Alex Lukashevsky.

On the heels of their smash hit "Nobody's Clown" Los Yesterdays return with "Who Made You You"whose dark feel coupled with singer Victor Benavides' bell-like timbre makes for a dichotomy of vibes that makes for a sinister groover that's sure to get heads bobbing at discerning DJ nights around the globe. Imagine Eddie Holman cutting a side for Fania and you're getting warm. On the other side of this future-classic you'll find quite possibly the best version of Richard Berry's classic "Louie Louie '' since the Kingsmen! Giving it the low and slow treatment Los Yesterdays alters its DNA, creating a bonafide ballad banger poised to turn-on a whole new generation of folks on to this R&B party fav.
The Altons turn up the heat with another platter produced by the Inland Empire's own, Bosco Mann. A soulful duet at its core, "Float" finds the group exploring new realms of pop excellence. The sophisticated arrangement and instrumentation gives the tune a cinematic feel that builds to a crescendo of psychedelic, swirling of strings - immersing the listener in a wash of Morricone-tinged euphoria. A track that wouldn't be out of place in the next 007 blockbuster. On the flip is "Cry for Me", a latin-tinged mover featuring Adriana Flores on lead vocal. Her pleading, soulful delivery gives the bouncy, hook-laden tune a seriousness that's simultaneously uplifting and heartbreaking.
In collaboration with our good pals at Timmion Records we are pleased to present two slamming sides from Mr. "Tell Me That You Love Me" himself, Jonny Benavidez. Hailing from San Diego and currently residing in NYC, Jonny is a vocal group aficionado of the highest order who has sung and studied with the best of 'em. This is evident as soon as his sweet vocals drop in "Somebody Cares" - a mid-tempo moover sure to make waves on the WC scene. On the flip is "Slow Down Girl" , a refreshingly uptempo tune that's sure to get your heartrate up. Stay tuned for more to come in 2023.
Someone's at the door.... Who is it? It's Thee Sacred Souls and they've come bearing a pair of massive tunes off their debut album, this time on the convenient 7" 45rpm format. "Future Lover", a fan favorite of their live set, is beat-ballad perfection, punctuated by silky strings and a pleading call and response hook that serves as the perfect compliment to Josh's passionate lead. "For Now" is a sparse, brooding track whose protagonist pulls at the listeners heartstrings as he struggles to make sense of love that's fading away.
Anyone who has had the pleasure of seeing Vicky sing live knows she's one of the most talented singers in the game. Her presence and command on stage has the unique ability to make you feel like she's singing each and every note directly to you. Just being in her orbit for 30 min will have you walking away feeling like you've experienced something special. On this single Vicky flexes her range and writing chops with two deep, deep bluesy ballads of the highest calibre. "Love Don't Treat You Fair" is a tale of despair that creeps along like a long lost Little Willie John session for King. With "The Moment" Vicky delivers an incredibly soulful vocal (ala Etta James) that is so natural and classic it's hard to imagine it wasn't recorded 50 years ago. If bluesy soul is what you're after...look no further!

The San Francisco bay area has long been an important outpost of the International Pop Underground, from the 90s heyday of The Aislers Set, #Poundsign# and The Fairways to the string of legendary popfests in the early 00s and more recently to a DIY pop resurgence with bands like The Mantles, Flowertown and The Reds, Pinks & Purples. Now we're very happy to welcome into this rich pop tradition The Umbrellas, who, after one well-received tape/single, are sure to dazzle with their new self-titled debut album.
Classic indiepop influences abound, from The Byrds to Orange Juice, The Pastels, Comet Gain and Belle & Sebastian, along with a noticeable garage-pop/Paisley Underground flavor that is a hallmark of San Francisco's best bands. Lead-off single "She Buys Herself Flowers" introduces us to a band that's both intimately conversant with indiepop history but also unburdened by it, a group with the song-crafting chops and spirit to take familiar elements and create for themselves a fresh new sound. The album goes from strength to strength, studded with pop gems like "Near You," "Lonely" and "Pictures" -- tunes that sound like classics from the first listen, as timeless and elemental as all great pop.

“Is Marcos Mena the best guitarist in indie rock?” -48hills
“hugely technical yet hook-heavy” -Guitar World
“[B]ursting with sweet flavors and tantalizing textures just like the fruits they use for their imagery.” -Fecking Bahamas, on Friends
Led by the exuberant melodies of cross-tapping guitarist Marcos Mena, the duo named standards make ebullient instrumental math-rock whose effervescent riffs teem with enthusiasm for life and music. On the band's debut full-length, Fruit Island, standards deftly retool math-rock's sinister and challenging tendencies into a style that is at once danceable yet still compositionally profound.
On Fruit Island's lead single, "Special Berry," the duo blends simplicity and complexity into a charming jaunt of nimble fingertapping and agile between-the-lines drumming. Mena's energetic melodies contort and twist expertly into drummer Forrest Rice's bouncing ferocity, the springy grooves of which are equally attention demanding and rewarding.
In spite of the band's technical and precise stylings, the strictly instrumental compositions are always catchy and singable, inviting listeners to join the band's dancing fruit mascots whose colorful personalities reflect the music's upbeat nature. Fruit Island's second single, "May," perfectly captures the duo's fruity alternate universe, conjuring images of anthropomorphic melons and berries bobbing along to pleasantly angular riffs and chop-heavy drums.

TRACKLISTING
Written and performed by Gruff Rhys for the award-winning independent movie The Almond and the Seahorse, this soundtrack is an encapsulation of what makes both the Welsh music icon and this film captivating and timeless.
The Super Furry Animals frontman has created a double album that reflects the charm, melancholy and poignancy of the Rebel Wilson and Charlotte Gainsbourg-starring feature; showcasing the easy warmth and beauty Rhys finds with a piano and guitar, weaved between moving instrumental interludes and a handful of cosmic pop songs for good measure. Perhaps most reminiscent of the opus created by Badly Drawn Boy for the movie About A Boy, the record spans the breadth of Rhys’ songwriting talents.
Directed by BAFTA winner Celyn Jones (Six Minutes to Midnight) and BAFTA nominee Tom Stern, The Almond and the Seahorse is a funny, poignant, and moving story that follows the entwined experiences of two couples where one partner has survived traumatic brain injury and how it impacts their lives together. It is the second soundtrack Gruff Rhys has produced following his work on Set Fire To The Stars, the acclaimed semi-biographical drama based on the life of poet Dylan Thomas.
To celebrate the film’s release, a limited edition vinyl version of the OST will be pressed on transparent yellow vinyland include a film poster and foil numbered stamp.
FATEN KANAAN
AFTERPOEM
O U T F E B R U A R Y 2 4 T H 2 0 2 3
Faten Kanaan's fifth LP Afterpoem is a mysterious, smudgy, bittersweet, and uniquely playful album. Deeply melodic, it continues her poignant exploration of counterpoint as a narrative tool.
From the repetitive structures of modern minimalism and early music/baroque influences - to more languid textural ebbs & tides, there's a warmth in her use of electronic instruments that gives the album a curiously timeless feel. Composing intuitively, her music has often been described as 'strange', mostly because it creates its own world- one that isn't easily categorised.
The album's title refers to the haze of a poem's intended meaning being abstractly fleeting and barely graspable. Glistening threads of understanding still touch us - the poetry becoming intimately personal, and no further literal explanation is needed.
Saint Abdullah & Jason Nazar y Evicted In The Morning
A unique dialogue between the electronic textures of Saint Abdullah with the live dr ums of Jason Nazar y (Anteloper)
Saint Abdullah consists of Tehran-bor n brothers Mohammad and Mehdi Mehrabani-Yeganeh, who have been explor ing a diverse palette of sounds over their releases to date, including collaborations with Eomac on Nicolas Jaar’s Other People label, and Model Home on Pur ple Tape Pedigree, as well as their own duo album on Impor tant Records
Jason Nazar y is a dr ummer and composer from Atlanta and based in Brooklyn Fascinated by the intersection of acoustic and electronic music, Jason has been a force in New Yor k's creative music scene for over a decade. As well as his own solo wor k he also co-leads a number of ensembles, among them the dystopian electro noise duo Clebs with singer Emilie Weibel, and until recently Anteloper, an improvising modular beat shredding duo with the much-missed Jaimie Branch
Planet Mu welcomes back Meemo Comma for her third album 'Loverboy'. 'Loverboy' is a shift in gear from Meemo Comma’s previous works, speeding up the tempos and rhythms, it's set in the nineties with trance, breakbeat hardcore and jungle as some of the influences.
After playing a club gig in Spain as lockdown rules were loosening, Rix-Martin was reminded of the power music and people coming together creates. ‘Loverboy’ is peppered with influences from friends past and new as well as artists that have transformed the sound of Meemo Comma over the years, including Autechre, Guy Called Gerald, Orbital and Shitmat as well as others.
On this journey we follow ‘Loverboy’ through the club as the night builds and different characters are met, from dropping the first pill to a euphoric ‘Cloudscape’ whilst waiting in the queue, to meeting some shady sorts in ‘Loneheath’. The album changes pace throughout with different rooms of the club being explored which add to the brevity of Rix-Martin’s production style on tracks such as 'Kyle' and 'AK47'.
What started as a personal joke about Rix-Martin’s background formed a narrative for some darker, cheeky breaks that echo back on title track ‘Loverboy’, a track that Rix-Martin describes as “working class gender euphoria”.
Maybe the mask has come off, and the shackles of pseudo-intellectualism have been put to rest for an honest, fun and ‘propa cheeky’ rave album instead.
Combining percussion-laden rhythms with synthesisers, vocal samples, and at times unexpected acoustic instruments, the album became a cult classic amongst fans of fourth world and avant garde music.
Nenad Jelić is one of the most original artists to appear on the Serbian music scene, a percussionist obsessed with melody and silence, a multi-disciplinary instrumentalist . A member of the line-up of musicians which released the cult album Balkan Impressions , he was one of the originators of the World Music movement in Serbia.

For fans of: Brainbombs, Throbbing Gristle, Crass, Whitehouse, Nurse With Wound & Swell Maps.
Engürdetz perhaps weren’t a known name to the vast music devouring public - but for a brief period in time & to a scene of chosen few, they were a name associated with raw, gut-opening & kill em' all industrial mayhem. Made up by the duo of Drajan (Brainbombs, Diskad, Orchestra Of Constant Distress a.o.) & Lanchy (Brainbombs, Totalitär, Swinehood a.o.).
With only three extremely limited cassettes released between 1986-1988 they managed to maintain a place in Swedish industrial history - connected to acclaimed & contemporary names such as Lille Roger (later Brigher Death Now) & Arvid Tuba.
’Sillmjölke’ differed from the duo’s previous outputs. The tracks had moved closer into the formula of a ”standard” song formula & the influences from British industrialists such as Whitehouse had become more apparent, along with sections that made your mind venture to the freer & ambient sides of Swell Maps (even if they didn’t necessarily know who Swell Maps were at the time).
For the first time ever, this last effort from one of Sweden’s originators of True Swedish Industrial will be widely available on vinyl & digitally. 500 copies worldwide.
HAPPIESTOVERVIEW
The second part of the duology on mass-murderess Belle Gunness is due. The follow-up on TALES OF BELLE, PART 1 – ACROSS THE OCEAN by the Mid-Norwegian six-piece band Adventure continues the unbelievable story of the poor Norwegian immigrant’s hunt for wealth. Part 1 finished with the suspicious death of her first husband and the move to LaPorte, Indiana.
TALES OF BELLE, PART 2 – UNVEILED BY FIRE features 10 tracks that were all written and recorded during various states of lockdown in Norway. The theme is now the mysterious death of her second husband, all the men seeking prosperity with the widowed Belle only to disaapear, the horrendous fire on her farm, the gruesome findings in the grounds after the fire, the absurd theatre that took place after the news broke, the trial of the farmhand, and finally his confession. Nobody can tell for certain if Belle Gunness perished in the fire or not. There is no final confirmation…
Adventure is still exploring the golden era of 70ies symphonic hard rock, mixing in proggy and folky elements. The guitar and Hammond organ still the heart of Adventure’s sound, augmented by multipart harmony vocals and a rock steady rhythm section.
Clive Nolan of Pendragon and Arena fame has a little cameo appearance. Cellist Marit Aspås from The Trondheim Soloists also appears on a couple of tracks.

OVERVIEW:
Howlin’ Sun returns with their sophomore album “Maxine” later th is year. But first their debut album from 2018 gets a rerelease on LP.
Howlin´ Sun – the band that proves that rock is most definitely alive. The band from Bergen, Norway, combines elements from 60-s British rock and classic guitar-heavy rock to create a modern sound and tastefully rude image. After playing together for a numb er of years, the quartet has made a name for themselves through their unique expression and live-show reminiscent of Hendrix´s early concerts. Lead vocalist Tor Erik delivers an impressive classic rock character on stage, and singing like the child of Robert Plant and Jim Morrison, according to dusken.no. Guitarist Magnus plays energetic riffs and solos over the solid backing of Torgrim and Pieter on drums and bass.
With an arsenal of guitar solos and bass lines Howlin´ Sun engages the entire audience with a live show that has been well rounded over a summer of festival gigs such as Rekordfestivalen and KlubbØya. Their debut album will be released in early 2018 on Apollon Records and they are ready to play their way through the country. "This was quite a show! Finally a band that delivers the rock cliche, that own the stage and the audience. Howlin' Sun plays heavy, blues based 70's rock. And the guitar solos. My god those are some guitar solos." said Magasinet Stoff's music critic about the band´s show at Vill Vill Vest 2016.

Tony Hill
Inexactness
Blue Matter Records
For the third release on Blue Matter, we were hoping we could get Tony Hill's permission to reissue his 2001 masterpiece 'Inexactness'. To our delight Tony was only too pleased to see the album make a long overdue reappearance. For those of you who are not familiar with Tony's work, here's a brief description. As a teenager Tony worked in the shipyards of the North East, and by night he was playing guitar in the blues clubs of Newcastle -Upon-Tyne. His first releases came in the mid 60s with The Answers, whose 'It's Just A Fear' has become the stuff of legend. By 1967 Tony was in London and was asked to join The Misunderstood, a bunch of psychedelic Californians brought to the UK by one John Peel. Tony wrote and played for the band until they returned to The USA. After this, Tony formed his own band, High Tide. They recorded two albums for Liberty, the amazing 'Sea Shanties' in 1969, and 'High Tide' a year later, both featuring Tony's unique guitar stylings and the brilliant violin of Simon House. High Tide split in the early 70s, and almost 30 years later, in 2001 legendary bassist Ade Shaw persuaded his old pal Tony to bring some new songs into the studio. With a band comprising Ade on bass, Andy Ward on drums, Nick Saloman on guitar & Matt Kelly on violin, Tony rolled back the years and 'Inexactness' was born. To everyone ’s delight, original High Tide bassist Pete Pavli kindly agreed to play bass on a few tracks as well. This is its ’ first ever appearance on vinyl, and we think you ’ll agree it's been well worth the wait. Side One:
During lockdown, Bevis Frond frontman Nick Saloman, having little else to do, found himself writing loads of songs. Some were used on the Fronds ’ ‘Little Eden’ album, many were discarded, and some were kept with a view of doing something with them in the future. Nick felt that a batch of these songs were pretty good, but not really suitable for The Bevis Frond, maybe being a bit too punky. However, wanting to record these songs, he called up his mate Tony Page, the former lead singer with vintage punk bands The Ploy and Apocalypse, to see if he fancied doing some vocals. Tony was only to pleased to take part. Then Nick asked bandmate Paul Simmons if he ’d do all the guitar parts.. So what do we have here then? I guess it ’s a loud, angry, melodic, wry punk rock album full of great tunes. Hope you ‘love it’, and if you don’t, well, that’s life.
Michael Cullen Murphy - All Change At The 5 & Dime Blue Matter Records
The fifth release on Blue Matter is a debut album from a guy whose performance and writing would easily give the impression that he is a seasoned campaigner. The confidence and the musicality are of a standard rarely heard. Michael Cullen Murphy was born and raised in Nashville, and moved to the UK when he was 11. His father was friends with the great Peter Rowan and many other country and folk artists, and since childhood, understandably, Mike has been dabbling in folk and country. However, Mike is better known as a reggae specialist, and has kept his special musical talents extremely quiet. Even though we had been friends with Mike for years, we had no idea he was an accomplished singer, player and songwriter, which is why we were so amazed when he played us the almost completed album. Not only does he have a great singing voice, but his songs have an impressive depth and sense of melody. If one had to put some kind of label on the music contained within this record, it would probably contain the words 'Americana' and 'folk’, but that doesn't tell the whole story. There are touches of classic singer/ songwriter and psychedelia too. Side One: 1 A Serial Killer’s Love Song 2 Strings And The Wood 3 All Change At The 5 And Dime 4 The Day That We Have Here 5 Moonboy. Side Two: 6 The Best Thing I Ever Did (Was Leaving You) 7 Growing Old 8 Without You 9 Been Here And Gone
TOQUEI NO SOL
Marlene Ribeiro’s debut for Rocket Recordings and first album under her own name. Toquei No Sol is is a fresh new chapter for this unique artist, by far the most melodic and transcendent outing yet for her hypnotic dreampop .This is only the latest release in a long history for Marlene, which includes her previous work as Negra Branca and as a member ofGNOD .Toquei No Sol is is a record with a potent sense of place, paradoxically despite having been woven together from recordings made in Ireland, Wales, Portugal, Madeira and Salford. Although listeners may hear echoes of the loop -driven psychedelia of Panda Bear ’s Person Pitch or the incantatory ululations of Pocahaunted in these beguiling soundscapes the truth is that the aesthetic here is very much Marlene ’s alone. “It’s all a big misty haze of nostalgia, playfulness, self -reflection and hopefulness” is what Marlene reckons herself. Yet Toquei No Sol is also a transporting vision from an artist both returning to her roots and looking out to new celestial horizons
