This Issue: Joe Steinhardt at Don Giovanni
Where do you go to search for new music? Who or what has been a new find you’d like to rave about?
Most of the artists I work with are playing in one of the music scenes or communities we work with. I’ve always approached running the label much more like a documentarian rather than a curator so it’s always been less about my personal taste as much as it is about what’s going on.
Is there a genre that you would consider to be the label’s “signature style,” or is it a mix?
I’ve always been much more interested as a listener and a label owner in what is being expressed rather than how it is being expressed.
We know you can’t choose, but what’s been your favorite label release, and why?
I don’t have any tattoos but I imagine this would be like asking someone to pick their favorite.
What is your stance on color vinyl?
How did you personally get started in the music industry?
I’m still trying to figure out if I’m actually in the music industry or not, but about five or six years after the label began I started to have a goal of getting our releases distributed and known nationally.
When and where did the label begin?
New Brunswick, NJ even though I was living in Boston at the time, in 2003 or 2004 depending on how accurate you want to be.
What is the meaning behind the name for the label?
It comes from the movie Dirty Work but doesn’t really have any meaning behind it other than liking the way it sounded. If I knew I would still be doing the label all these years later I probably would have tried to think of something even dumber.
How has the label changed since it started?
The goals of providing a viable alternative to a corporately controlled music industry that can level the playing field and allow artists to be relevant nationally on their own terms, and putting artists and art first really hasn’t changed much since starting the label.
Describe the general makeup of your team at the label. I’m still handling almost everything myself the same way I did when I started but I’ve been really fortunate to be able to pay friends to help with things from time to time. Right now Mike Campbell handles press for us, and Jon Herroon fulfills our mail-order, he also runs his own label called Fire Hazard Records which I encourage you to check out.
What has been the biggest challenge for you and the label during the Pandemic?
All of it.
Is the label tied to a specific geographical area? How is this reflected in your releases?
I’ve always been very community focused and so when the label started for our first ten years or so we only worked with bands in New Brunswick, NJ and the surrounding area. The internet and especially web 2.0 forced me to re-think what the community we were serving was a bit and so now it’s a little less region focused and the label has grown to serve a couple of different communities.
I abhor it and think it’s for children. Small children. I get that grown ups are into it but grown ups will also buy legos and go to disneyland without children.
Forget about the vinyl boom - how are you and your label responding to the ever-increasing popularity of cassette tapes? CDs??
I’ve never really understood the cassette thing but CDs are the main format I listen to so we’ve always tried to make them for the same reason we made vinyl when no one understood why.
How would you describe the average fan of the label? I wouldn’t
In your opinion, how important is it to be environmentally sustainable within the music industry these days?
It is so important it should be mandated and regulated and it’s depressing that it’s not, at least within the independent community. What in your opinion has been the biggest change in the music industry from when you first started compared to now?
When I started Major Labels would illegally collude with Best Buy and WalMart to drive independent labels and local retail out of business. Today, large tech companies collude with each other and Major Labels to drive independent labels and local retail out of business.
Want to shout out a personal favorite record store or retail establishment? Now’s your chance:
Princeton Record Exchange (Princeton, NJ), Angry Mom Records (Ithaca, NY), Record Lounge (Lansing, MI), and Double Decker (Allentown, PA) are some of my personal favorites.
They say our sun will explode in about 5 billion years or so- how would you like the label to be remembered?
Never been super concerned about that kind of thing and more concerned with relevance while the label is active so I appreciate you giving me the chance to talk about it!

IDLES released ‘CRAWLER’ on November 12, 2021. It’s an album of reflection and healing amid a worldwide pandemic that stretched the planet’s collective mental and physical health to the breaking point.
Frontman JOE TALBOT says, “We want people who’ve gone through trauma, heartbreak, and loss to feel like they’re not alone, and also how it is possible to reclaim joy from those experiences.” IDLES albums have always been anchored by these overarching themes, but the ability of the band to juxtapose beauty and rage with humor and drama has never felt more satisfying than on ‘CRAWLER’.

TL; DR: Long-awaited vinyl reissue of the complete catalog from this super-influential US indie band.
RIYL: Tiger Trap, Heavenly, Cub, Lois
Go Sailor were a great, short-lived band from the mid-90s who represent a key link in the US indie music chain. Featuring Rose Melberg (Tiger Trap, The Softies, Gaze, Brave Irene, Knife Pleats), Linton (Henry’s Dress, The Aislers Set) and Paul Curran (Take A Day fanzine, Crimpshrine, Monsula), they released three great singles and a few compilation tracks, and then went their separate ways. But what records they are! Basic and lovely in their song-writing, they’re perfect snapshots of where indie-pop was during that last burst of pre-internet indie activity. Touching on time-honored themes of friendship and love (lost and found), they resonate with honesty and purity of intention. The trio reunited in the early 2010s to play to enraptured crowds at the NYC and Athens Popfests, and their appearance at the Slumberland 20th Anniversary show was the stuff of legend. This album compiles all three of their 7” singles (for Slumberland, Yoyo and Lookout!) and compilation tracks, and was first released on vinyl in 2011. Due to pressing plant issues it quickly went out of print, so we are very happy to bring you this new edition, back on vinyl where it belongs with a new insert featuring liner notes and lots of cool band pictures and ephemera.

It seems awhile ago, but it wasn’t –not in days and months...whatever time is. But in terms of phases –- we’ve been in and out of all kinds of bags since last summer, right? There’s the us before we heard the rest that 2022 had to offer, and then there’s us today. And coming on seven months later, fresh as it still is, “Hello, Hi” is disappearing in the rearview, like everything else that’s going down the road.
But July 2022, it was in the headlights, dead ahead. We weren’t there yet, we couldn’t know what it would mean, but we were excited to find out. And in L.A., with the release show at Teragram coming up, Ty and the Freedom Band were working and playing to get it together. There’d be a little acoustic set to open things up, which was something different, so a last minute show was drummed up, for Ty and Emmett to work it out in front of some people. And that kind of became the REAL record release show.
Word went out afternoon of the 21st
TRACKS
–- free show tonight in Highland Park –- YEAH! A crowd showed up that evening and crammed in among the vintage clothes to hear some music and share some times. And most of us missed it! But nobody missed it quite like your present scribe did –- I went down, stopped in, said hi –- my lady-friend bought a hat –- and then we split, regretfully, a previous engagement to attend.
What suckers we were! This show clearly ruled, just hearing the five songs included here. With the incredible feelings of the crowd and the spontaneous play in the songs we now know from the album almost miraculously captured to tape (by the capturer himself, Mike Kreibel) at FULL WARMTH, none of us can say we missed it at all anymore –- drop the needle and you’re there, at the launching of sounds that added to the evolution of the world we’ve been living in ever since!
So that’s the story -- “Hello, Hi”, goodbye

Watchhouse - Such Jubilee
WORLDWIDE RELEASE DATE: MARCH 3, 2023
After the breakout critical success of Watchhouse’s Yep Roc debut,This Side of Jordan, in 2013, you’d expect the relentless onslaught of touring that accompanied it to seep into the writing of the North Carolina duo’s follow-up. You’d expect the sound to reflect long days on the road, long nights onstage, unfamiliar cities, countless miles. You’d expect the classic “road record.” But you’d be wrong. “All of these songs are definitely a product of being on the road,” says multi-instrumentalist/singer Emily Frantz about the band’s 2015 record - Such Jubilee - “but they’re not about the road.” “They’re about home,” explains songwriter/multi-instrumentalist/singer Andrew Marlin. “Not because we were missing it, but because when you’re gone so much, you start realizing what you have and what’s waiting for you. You realize there’s this place to come back to at the end of the journey, and that’s where a lot of these songs come from.”
“Full of graceful ease that subtly pulls you in” - NPR Music
“Over a rich bed of banjo and violin, Andrew Marlin and Emily Frantz harmonize [about] finding one’s place and taking comfort in the discovery” - Wall Street Journal

Watchhouse - Blindfaller
WORLDWIDE RELEASE DATE: MARCH 3, 2023
Lean into Watchhouse’s Blindfaller and it’s bound to happen. You’ll suddenly pick up on the power and devastation lurking in its quietude, the doom hiding beneath its unvarnished beauty. You’ll hear the way it magnifies the intimacy at the heart of the North Carolina duo’s music, as if they created their own musical language as they recorded it. “We talked about the feel of each song and pointed out loosely who was going to be taking solos, but it was mostly a lot of fresh takes, a lot of eye contact, and a lot of nods and weird winks,”says Andrew Marlin, who anchors the band with fellow multi-instrumentalist and singer Emily Frantz.
Originally released September 30, 2016 on Yep Roc Records, Blindfaller builds on the acclaim of Watchhouse’s breakthrough debut on the label, 2013’s This Side of Jordan, and its follow-up, 2015’s Such Jubilee.
“The musical tapestry of ‘Blindfaller’ is delicately woven with lush threads of acoustic guitar, banjo, mandolin, violin and pedal steel...However, it’s the vocal interplay of Frantz and Marlin that is the band’s most distinctive calling card.” - Rolling Stone Country
“Because their harmonies have such a sweet, angelic quality, you almost miss out on the righteous warning.” - NPR Music

“FOREGROUND MUSIC”, the title of Ron Gallo’s 4th LP, and debut for Kill Rock Stars might also be a suitable name for his own genre. In simplest terms it’s the opposite of background music - unavoidable, urgent, in your face - Gallo’s consistent theme is to confront, disrupt and sometimes even confuse people into a sense of awareness. The intention to steer away from apathy and self-empower by focusing on what we can control and make light of in a world designed to take it away. The guitar is less an instrument and more of a primal noise machine. This record is a challenge to everything and everyone, including his own self, who is holding back the progress of humanity (especially in America) into a more open, empathetic and collective unit - the words delivered with a punkish tenacity and lining even the heaviest topics with an ever-present sense of humor. It covers the full spectrum of emotion. This music feels like life feels right now. In his eyes, how could it not?
Clad in caution tape and construction orange color scheme, much like his surrounding neighborhood in Philadelphia where it was written and recorded. Gallo doesn’t see now (or ever) as the time to sit back and chill - this is going to be what we make it.
Over the course of the record traversing between sounds akin to an exploding NYC subway station, oddball dance-punk, noise pop, even the more grave moments would sit well in whatever a modern version of CBGB’s 1975 would be - in 11 songs Gallo shares detailed anecdotes and takes on male entitlement, the age of anxiety, apathy vs. action, gentrification, narcissism, retail therapy, xenophobia, the dread of future generations, right wing extremists in giant pickup trucks, capitalism, climate change and the experience of having a loved-one who is an addict.
If an existential crisis could somehow be fun - it’s this record.

This 1973 gem is another one of those obscure ‘70s soul-funk albums released on a small independent label that has gone on to become a cratedigging favorite and a huge inspiration to modern-day hip hop artists and beyond. Chicago-based The South Side Movement began as the backing band for the Sam & Dave-inspired soul duo Simtec & Wylie; their self-titled debut on the Scepter imprint Wand—much of it written by Chicago label owner and producer James Vanleer—scored a top 20 R&B hit with “I’ Been Watchin’ You,” and they went on to make a couple of other records before disbanding in the mid-‘70s. So, your basic one-hit wonder, right? Well, not exactly…while The South Side Movement never reached the same level of commercial success, that one hit has been sampled by—are you ready for this?—The Beastie Boys, Beck, Erykah Badu, Jadakiss, and many more. The rest of the album is very tasty Windy City soul-funk, with an unexpectedly great cover of Stevie Wonder’s “Superstition” a highlight. First-ever LP reissue, pressed in clearwater blue vinyl!

After bursting on the scene with Ornette Coleman, trumpeter Don Cherry went on to make some of the most interesting and collectible albums in modern jazz, particularly during the ‘70s, when he incorporated world music motifs into a singular style of jazz fusion. Produced by Narada Michael Walden, 1977’s Hear & Now was the only solo album Cherry recorded for Atlantic, and while it’s probably the most rock-heavy of any of the albums in his catalog, it still displays his signature eclecticism, incorporating Indian drones on “Mahakali” and African drums on the dazzling, album-ending suite “Journey of Milarepa/Shanti/The Ending Movement - Liberation (from Welkin of Infinity).” It also boasts a fantastic supporting cast with Michael Brecker, Collin Walcott, Marcus Miller, Tony Williams, Steve Jordan, and guitarist Stan Samole, who particularly shines. Not only did the 1992 debut from L.A. band Unruly Child never come out on vinyl here in the U.S., but when it was originally issued on LP in Europe, the powers-that-were decided to stuff this approximately 54-minute record on to a single platter…not a superior listening experience to say the least! So, when we decided to put this out, we elected to release it as a double record AND have it remastered for vinyl by Eliot Kissileff. Guess you could say Unruly Child is all grown up now…all the better to hear this band’s unique brand of melodic metal spearheaded by vocalist Marcie (formerly Mark) Free, who first gained fame singing with Carmine Appice in King Kobra. Red vinyl pressing housed inside a gatefold jacket, limited to 1500 copies!

2006’s The Devil Wears Prada remains one of the funniest and smartest comedies of this millennium. And the studio that made it, 20th Century Fox, knew it all along—they actually bought the film rights to Lauren Weisberger’s novel before it was even published! And they took the same, spare-no-expense approach to the soundtrack…what do you suppose they shelled out for the rights to Madonna’s “Vogue,” U2’s “City of Blinding Lights,” and Alanis Morisette’s “Crazy?” The rest of the soundtrack is top shelf, or should we say haute couture, too, featuring indie-rock stalwarts Moby and Ray LaMontagne, funk/ acid jazz legends Jamiroquai, and more dance-pop of the sort you’d be likely to hear while watching beautiful people slink down a catwalk. Our first-ever LP release of this comes all dressed up with a blood-red stiletto heel cover and a full-color inner sleeve. Black and white marble vinyl!

STREET DATE: MARCH 3, 2023
Bottle Rockets leader Brian Henneman worked as Uncle Tupelo’s guitar tech for a couple of years before forming an alt-country band that rivalled his former bosses. Released in Atlantic in 1997, 24 Hours a Day represented The Bottle Rockets’ chance at the big time; it’s their sole major label release, and they pulled out all the stops for this one, hiring former Del Lord Eric “Roscoe” Ambel to produce and revisiting “Indianapolis,” the song that got Henneman a record deal back in the early ‘90s. Alas, the record failed to break through commercially; but there will always be a place in our hearts for this kind of hard-driving, honest, tuneful rock and roll, best exemplified by “Perfect Far Away” and “When I Was Dumb.” For its LP debut, we’re pressing this underappreciated classic in coke bottle (natch) clear vinyl housed inside an album jacket with inner sleeve…limited to 1000 copies!

After penning the Glen Campbell megahit “Gentle on My Mind” and appearing repeatedly both on Glen’s weekly variety show and on The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, John Hartford could have taken the show biz glide path to financial security and ease. Instead, the singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist (and steamboat enthusiast) moved back to Nashville from L.A., signed a contract with Warner Bros., and proceeded to create one of the most influential and groundbreaking albums not just in bluegrass but in modern country music as a whole. 1971’s Aereo-Plain assembled a veritable supergroup consisting of fiddler Vassar Clements, dobroist Tut Taylor, guitarist Norman Blake and bassist Randy Scruggs to play a set of mostly original tunes that were unlike anything the staid bluegrass community had ever heard before. Fresh, irreverent, funny and always—except for the hilarious Dr. Demento favorite Boogie—tuneful, and played by an absolutely scintillating band, the songs on Aereo-Plain pointed to a new stylistic direction for bluegrass, one quickly coined “newgrass;” as Sam Bush of the New Grass Revival says, “Without Aereo-Plain, there would be no ‘newgrass’ music.”
We’re reissuing this essential album on LP for the first time in 50 years; it includes lyrics and liner notes by John Hartford expert Skip Heller. Bone vinyl pressing limited to 1000 copies!

TANUKICHAN GIZMO
When the pandemic hit, Hannah van Loon adopted a dog named Gizmo, who became a much-needed companion while the Bay Area musician wrote her second album as Tanukichan. Aptly named after her new four-legged friend, GIZMO is an exercise in release, whether from situational hindrances — a forced lockdown, for one — or from self-imposed hedonistic coping mechanisms. “A theme I always had floating around was escape,” van Loon explains of her follow-up to 2018’s Sundays. “Escaping from myself, my problems, sadness and cycles.”
To channel the more uplifting spirit she wanted for GIZMO, van Loon turned to the radio pop-rock of her childhood: “I was struck by the in-your-face positivity of the lyrics,” she adds, referencing artists like 311, The Cranberries, and Tom Petty. “I wanted to bring that positivity while writing about the sad and helpless emotions I’d been grappling with.” But GIZMO’s lightheartedness doesn’t make it shallow: “I think that I could let it go, as beautiful as snow,” she murmurs on “Don’t Give Up,” a nu metal-meets-Cocteau Twins groove about the sudden awareness that all the relationships you depend on could vanish instantaneously. Van Loon’s main collaborator on GIZMO was Toro y Moi’s Chaz Bear, and the jangly pop earworm “Take Care” showcases the heavily distorted, in-your-face guitarwork reminiscent of Bear’s own psych joints What For? and Mahal. On the hypnotic, wall-of-sound-rocker “Thin Air” featuring Enumclaw, van Loon channels the triumphant grit of The Smashing Pumpkins as she ponders the impermanence of even the most impactful relationships: “I’ll always have the memories/Of how you used to make me see/Until they fell in the ocean/They’re not swimming/They’re not floating.”
Existentialism aside, GIZMO also sees van Loon break out of her sonic comfort zone. “One of the main changes of how I’m approaching music now is that I want to have more fun in the process,” she says, and she walks the line between melodrama and whimsy gracefully: “I can learn something because I’ve been here before,” she sings on the soaring, bittersweet “Been Here Before.” Deftones-inspired thrash drums and screeching electric guitars are gracefully contrasted with van Loon’s hypnotic, almost deadpan vocal style and a crystal clear acoustic guitar she describes as “cute.” Gizmo the dog suddenly passed away right as van Loon finished the album, but he’s immortalized with his photo on the cover — a fitting emblem of this new era of Tanukichan.

ARTIST: Fazerdaze
TITLE: Break!
STREET DATE: March 3rd, 2023
OVERVIEW
Fazerdaze, aka Auckland-based singer/producer/multiinstrumentalist Amelia Murray, is back with new music after a very intentional 5 year pause.
And now Fazerdaze returns with ‘Break!’ – an air-punch purge in musical form, marking an important reintroduction to an essential artist of our times.
In a society where being strong and resilient is often held up like a badge of honor, it’s much, much harder to acknowledge when enough is enough - to accept when it’s time to let go. It’s a truth that Murray has spent years wrangling with, but one whose story thankfully comes with an empowering punchline of personal reclamation.
Rewind back half a decade and, objectively, things for Fazerdaze were hitting their stride. Then residing in Auckland, an early determination to graft hard and “put herself in the right places” had led to working for and then signing with legendary New Zealand label Flying Nun. A debut LP - 2017’s ‘Morningside’ - followed, full of gauzy melodies and influenced by Frankie Cosmos, Japanese Breakfast, and the dream-pop landscape of the time.
Finishing up touring for the record at the end of 2018, Amelia speaks of a deep sense of burn out and, more than that, of feeling the “wheels starting to come off” in her general life. “No longer being stoic and strong was the best thing I ever did for myself. Giving up on the people and things that weren’t working in my life was this big release where I could finally put down this weight that I was carrying, and ever since then everything has been better in my life overall,” she continues, with an audible sense of relief. “I can hear my intuition and write songs and be creative; I signed a record deal, I moved into my own place. It’s like the floodgates opened for good stuff coming into my life.”

Down across the railroad tracks, on a narrow road called Church Street in West Point, Mississippi, there’s a windowless brick building that’s been converted into a house of worship called The Message Center. One chilly January morning, the original members of a little-known gospel group from Aberdeen, Mississippi, called the Staples Jr. Singers gathered there to play some of their early songs for the first time in nearly 50 years.

STEVE MASON BROTHERS & SISTERS
OVERVIEW
In the wake of his fourth album, About The Light (2019), Steve Mason, one of British music’s true 21st Century renegades, with a back catalogue that has taken in electro, dub, indie rock, electronica, hip hop, folk and everything in-between, felt creatively bereft. Allied to this was the weight of adult responsibility that was starting to bear down heavily on him. In the space of a year he’d got married, had a child and bought a house. The spectre of making a safe, radio-friendly record – a sensation he felt he had already encroached upon with About The Light – didn’t sit easily.
So in order to become an artist again, the erstwhile Beta Band frontman knew he had to demolish what he had become. Or was in danger of becoming. He had to become a child again. Which, funnily enough, was what being in The Beta Band – that wondrously electrifying, infuriatingly magical Anglo-Scottish four-piece – resembled.
The finished result is arguably the most open, honest and vibrant record of Mason’s career. Like many of his previous records it marries the personal and the political but does so in an emotive and uplifting manner. Written against a backdrop of fear and uncertainty, and at a time when those in charge lurched from one disaster to the next mismanagement with increasing regularity, Brothers & Sisters is in fact an incredibly joyous, even spiritual, listen.
Brothers & Sisters is a record about bringing people together through art, music and culture. A lofty aim, no doubt, but one that Mason has achieved – through a lot of perspiration and a little demolition – on the best album of his 25-year career in sonic wanderlust.

TALES OF TERROR
TIME ON CD
"Straight out of The Dead Boys / Stooges school of intense, f**k-it-all, snarl and self-destruct. Recommended."
Often cited as a major influence on the key bands of the grunge era (N N i r v a n a , M e l v i n s , M u d h o n e y etc.) T a l e s O f T e r r o r 's one & only LP is an overlooked classic of 80s NorCal punk rock.
Available for the first time on CD, K u r t C o b a i n ' s 32nd-favourite-album-of-alltime is chaotic and charismatic in equal parts; the band's story is tinged with tragedy, but the music they played was life-affirming. Wild, heads down proto thrash metal meets punk excess; think early Guns n’ Roses meets Iggy at the bar from a band whose trajectory was cut short after the death of guitarist Lyon Wong in 1986.
A super rare release, unavailable for over 30 years; remastered and ready to be cranked up to full volume.

Here Goes Nothing
OVERVIEW
“Here Goes Nothing” is the debut album from garage rockers Nix & the Nothings. A homage to garage rock from the 60s and beyond - filled with fuzz, emotions & attitude. They deliver doomy lyrics set to wild sounds reminiscent of a Back From the Grave compilation, but with a bigger production value to infect the masses. 10 tracks of raw & haunting garage rock on acid, ended softly with tales of a broken heart.

Title: Northern Gothic
Label: APOLLON RECORDS PROG
Genre: Folk/Prog/Acoustic
OVERVIEW:
Wudewuse is the project of SBM, also known as Spacewülff of Spectral Haze and Skrubben (The Wolf) from Tusmørke. A life in service of music has conjured forth a style we call «gothic forest folk». It is the sound of intricate guitarpicking, set to a mythical lyrical universe.
This particular incarnation of Wudewuse consists of five prominent musicians from various metal, pop and prog-groups.
«This album was written over a period of three years while I was living in the forest and worked at a graveyard. Early in this period i went through a cosmic psychosis, following a death trip I had had on various substances. That certainly made it’s mark on the songs. At the graveyard I listened to a lot of classical and «gothic» music, as well as metal and progrock which has always been dear to my heart. John Renbourn and Bert Jansch have inspired everything I’ve ever done with Wudewuse and this is no less the case with this album. The result is gothic forest folk - Northern Gothic. I have the honor of being joined by a handful skilled musicians who set their particular sound to the tracks. Dauinghorn from Jordsjø/Elds Mark/Tusmørke, Daniel Bakken from Superlynx/Magenta, Ole Rokseth from Hymn/Sâver/Gundelach and Hlewagastir from Wobbler/Tusmørke.»

OVERVIEW
Formed in Rio de Janeiro in 2011, Caravela Escarlate is a trio heavily inspired by both English and Italian ‘70s Prog Rock, but they draw on traditional and popular Brazilian music, which gives them a special, and quite unique, sound.
Caravela Escarlate's third album is a new journey into vintage progressive rock pathways. "III" evokes historical issues in different contexts - Roman Empire, Medieval Times, PreColumbian Civilizations, and Age of Discovery. The cover artwork is a painting of the British artist J.M.W.Turner portraying the eruption of Vesuvius that destroyed Pompeii in AD 79.
In musical terms, Jove David Paiva, Elcio Cáfaro, and Ronaldo Rodrigues provide a deep exploration of organs and synthesizers over a solid basis of drums and bass like the glorious prog-rock trios from the 1970s. Seven tracks (two instrumentals) bring the unique approach of Caravela Escarlate that mixes universal influences and a Brazilian accent in prog rock.

LABEL: Daylight Saving Records
David Brewis of the band Field Music releases his debut solo record The Soft Struggles on 24 February 2023.
After three albums as School of Language, David Brewis’s next contribution to the ever-expanding Field Music universe is this jazz-inflected acoustic record. It will also be the second album release on Field Music’s newly formed Daylight Saving Records label, intended as the home for the Brewis brothers’ extra-curricular projects.
The Soft Struggles veers away from Field Music’s eclectic palette and instead leans into the luminous spontaneity of Van Morrison’s Astral Weeks and the breathy, string-laden chamber pop of Colin Blunstone’s One Year. Several of the tracks were built around a single day of live recording at Field Music’s studio in Sunderland, with David’s brother Peter on drums, Sarah Hayes (Admiral Fallow, You Tell Me) on piano and flute and Faye MacCalman (Archipelago) on clarinet and saxophone.
“There’s something a bit magical about a bunch of musicians together in a room being thrown in at the deep end,” says David, “So many of my favourite records were made quickly by musicians sitting a few feet from each other, playing songs they’d never even heard before the session began. That’s what I tried to do with this album. A chord sheet, a set of lyrics, a brief chat about tempo and then, okay comrades, see you at the other side.”
The soft struggles of the songs themselves touch on weariness and loss, disappointments allayed or accepted, anxieties overcome or temporarily elbowed aside, sometimes grasping for romantic, or parental, wisdom, and when wisdom isn’t quite in reach, there are songs of consolation and wry hopefulness.
The album also features contributions from singer Eve Cole, trombones by David Smith and Craig Hissett, saxophones on The Last Day by Pete Fraser, and strings courtesy of regular Field Music collaborators Ed Cross, Jo Montgomery, Chrissie Slater and Ele Leckie.

DAMEFRISØR Island of Light
STREET DATE: 24 February 2023
LABEL: Permanent Creeps Records
Bristol-based DAMEFRISØR have announced their first extended play “Island of Light” via Permanent Creeps Records, due for release 24 February 2023 and follows previous singles “Do You Think I'm Special?” and the BBC 6 Music playlisted “2-HEH-V”.
First taster is the epic, widescreen “Horizon” which builds on the texturally rich soundscape the band have already laid. “Horizon” sees the band fuse club and dance influences with industrial and post-rock seen in their earlier work, as they venture on the next step of their musical evolution.
The new single has already become a main-stay in the band's captivating live set, one that has seen them support such names as; Squid, Katy J Pearson and Folly Group as well as opening Bristol's Dot to Dot Festival mainstage.
The Island of Light EP was recorded with Alex Greaves (Working Men's Club, BDRMM, Lice) at The Nave Studios, Leeds.
Behind the recording of the EP was the emphasis to expand upon the band's sound and Kazhi Jahfar states how their choice of producer was key in this.
“The EP really feels like a natural progression since the last two singles came out. We set out to write these songs with the intention of creating more space in our music, and to further explore the mix of natural and industrial sounds. Before getting to the studio to record, the songs were in a basic stage; the ideas were there but far from formed.”
The artwork for the EP used a process called cyanotype in which sunlight and iron salt solution is used to create works of varying and unique results something that is reflected in the band's music, as Kazhi notes “...this process resonated with us because we tend to use a lot of modular synth in our music writing, and we love how the randomised nature of the artwork relates to elements of the music on the EP.”
GNOOMES - Ax Ox
ROCKET RECORDINGS LP LAUNCH290 5056321672063
Russia’s Gnoomes fourth release on Rocket Recordings, Ax Ox. The band have a kaleidoscopic and questing vision shot through with potent melancholia and strident optimism. Here thec omponent parts that have always made up Gnoomes ’ fresh and wide -eyed aesthetic - dreampop radiance, bold electronic experimentation and the propulsive motorik drive which moves them onward - are rendered still more vivid and transcendent. Ax Ox runs through a gamut of vibrant emotion across its eleven tracks, from the elemental blast of kraut -pop that is‘The Neighbour’to the crystalline and techno-fied‘ Loops’, and across moments of jarring and skewed ambience such as ‘Mirror’ and ‘The Bridge’. Ax Ox ultimately reflects something of an odyssey for a complex and inhospitable modern era, and with this in mind perhaps its centrepiece is the uplifting kosmische travelogue ‘Eternal Trans Siberian ’“It’s a metaphor of what’s going on to our country ” reckons Sasha.“It feels like we’re traveling on a rusty and wrecked train through space and time. The epochs change, but the problems stay the same and we don ’t know how it’s possible, but the train is still moving

Silver biplanes are Tim Vass (one half of razorcuts - the Creation-signed indiepop darlings) and Vanessa Vass (singer of Radcliffe jangle pop favourites the Melons). "A Moment In The Sun ” is the debut long player by silver biplanes, a melodic indie band based in Bedfordshire, England. The band features wife-and-husband team Vanessa Vass and Tim Vass alongside drummer Rob Scott and the album is the pinnacle of a musical career which has previously seen Vanessa and Tim release songs on no fewer than 30 different labels between them! The band are lifelong fans of the highways and bi-ways of music and the album draws upon a wide range of influences. It ’s a heady mix of choruses, hooks and catchy tunes in which you ’ll hear traces of psychedelia, postpunk, krautrock and more.
Hardcore supergroup FAKE NAMES (Minor Threat, Bad Religion, Refused, Fugazi) to release vinyl EP on
OUTER BATTERY RECORDS
Photo by Glen E FriedmanIt’s hard to know exactly where to begin with a band like Fake Names...
I suppose you could start with vocalist Dennis Lyxzen, who’s previous outfits include The (International) Noise Conspiracy and Swedish hardcore punk legends, The Refused. Or how about their guitarists; Minor Threat/Bad Religion’s Brian Baker, and State of Alert and Faith’s Michael Hampton? Throw in a rhythm section that counts amongst its ranks, bassist Johnny Temple (Soulside, Girls Against Boys) and guest drummer Brendan Canty (Rites of Spring, Fugazi) and you must admit, Fake Names is everything you want and more from a hardcore/punk rock supergroup.
In truth, the best place to really begin is with their EP, Fake Names. Released digitally last year on Epitaph Records, this March it’ll receive a full-blown, limited-edition release on underground label Outer Battery Records, with four separate colors to choose from, each with an individually designed sleeve by Dischord designer, Jason Farrell.
Fake Names EP will be released on limited edition 7” vinyl on March 3rd, 2023

For The Nude Party, nearly a decade has flown by in the blink of an eye. In that time, the New York-based band has released a pair of wellreceived albums, an EP and played numerous shows.
The band has historically worked with a producer to help them create a distinct sound in their records but with their latest effort, Rides On, the band decided to handle production duties by themselves. The hands-on approach allowed the band to have as much fun creating as they ever had at any other point in their career. They recorded over 20 songs, including some that dabbled in electro-pop and stripped-down country before settling on the final 14 songs containing the best elements of ‘70s-driven blues rock.
The relaxed vibe of the session also unleashed a diverse sonic texture compared to their previous releases. Sonically, the album is reminiscent of Sticky Fingers-era Stones, but the lyrics are mini-vignettes that embody the spirit of what The Nude Party are going for — and their growth as a band.
Rides On, the band confidently says, is their best record. It’s also the most homegrown and organic record The Nude Party has created to date.

“Music is soft power, it’s a form of diplomacy, it’s a way to unite.” For RarelyAlways a sense of purpose is rarely far from the surface. That’s been true in everything he’s done, as a musician across a huge range of scenes and sounds, as a writer, as an entrepreneur and youth worker – but now, with his debut solo album Work on the horizon, it’s really coming into focus. He may have “always been a shapeshifter” as he puts it, and Work be full of a dazzling array of sounds, but at the same time he has always retained a creative and ethical core to all he does. And as he steps up to take the microphone, on stage as much as in the studio, that is coming to the fore. With his already deep and broad musical and life experience, he’s in a unique position to offer something entirely new to UK music – and you’d better believe he has something to say.
From the youngest age, RarelyAlways knew that music had functions beyond just entertainment. London born to a West African family, he was raised by his single father who was a drummer, playing mainly gospel. As well as this showing him the ecstatic communal experience of hours-long services, he got to learn the power of playing for playing’s sake: his dad would regularly hire practice spaces for the pair of them to “beat the hell out of the drums” for an afternoon.
Musically he absorbed everything around him as a kid. Motown, reggae and Afrobeat from his family; Gorillaz, The Streets, Estelle and grime from his peers; and a personal fascination with the function of music in films that started young “and got me open minded, got me into orchestra stuff.” Though it was a different sort of film music that set him on the path he’s on now: the classic sounds in School of Rock. "Not going to lie, that film got me playing bass," he says, "and it set my tastes: I'm an old head." Led Zeppelin and Bob James led him into old funk like Brothers Johnson – and he gravitated to modern acts with that classic feel, notably Black Keys and Gnarls Barkley.
His talents took him to The Brit School, and thence to the South London gig circuit. He played trip hop and heavy rock, and found himself in the orbit of artists like King Krule, Henry Wu and the Tomorrow’s Warriors jazz collective. Very quickly he got a sense of interconnectivity and the opportunities that present when you’re open to other voices. “I learned there’s good people everywhere, not everyone of course but enough that you can find who’s worth listening to, who’s worth having as your running mate.”
But that constant openness to new ideas and new culture was always counterbalanced by a strong sense of self - shored up further by his work helping at-risk youth. “You've got to have that inner self that you can never let burn out. I think you've got to call to a place that is together and use that as an anchor. It's not possible to help other people become stronger or better if you're not trying to become stronger or better. They're going to believe you if you're authentic, so you've got to call from a place that's firm and upright and happy, it's the only way.”
With each successive RarelyAlways release that’s become more and more evident. A solo EP and one with Black Keys collaborator Hanni El Khatib, as well as collaborative tracks with the likes of Shabaka Hutchings, showed a fully developed rapping and singing voice. The tone was often dark, often mysterious, but crucially was able to roam freely outside the prescribed structures of hip hop, jazz or anything else, becoming conversational or abstract as the song’s message demanded it. And with the latest tracks, that personality
is being futther revealed: “It’s about taking off the armour. It's about not being scared to show my vulnerabilities. A lot of tracks are quite soft, quite innocent and really not what you might expect.”
That emergence is built around increased confidence in standing centre stage. “I play every chance I get,” he says, “and in the studio, I’m always thinking of that too. The most important thing is I have to be able to project it on stage or I don't see the point.” But it’s also about confidence in his place within the wider network. As he says in Work’s title track “I’m directing this, new show, new cast.” There are some established names that show RarelyAlways as plugged into the endlessly fertile UK underground, but just as importantly he’s nurturing “new monsters” – young instrumental talent from jazz and beyond – making this album truly a communal creation. But make no mistake: it is also the arrival of a truly singular voice, one which is fast becoming an unmistakeable presence in UK music.
"This guy is FIRE" - GILLES PETERSON (BBC)
“A concise exhibition of his minimalist swagger" - FADER
"Jazz and grime collide here to offer us a thought-provoking narrative and electrically charged-tracks" - WONDERLAND
"It made my jaw hit the floor the first time I heard it. Reminds me of early Dizzee Rascal in terms of its intensity, but with a clear nod to what Moses Boyd, Kamasi Washington and others have been doing in jazz in recent years" - BILLBOARD
"London's Rarelyalways has always marched to the beat of his own drum... the rapper's disregard of convention – his splintered approach, taking the best of garage, grime, funk, trip-hop and making it his own – has made him one of the most enthralling voices in music today." - CLASH
"Though Rarelyalways comes out of the London jazz scene, his music has its own distinct flavor." - PITCHFORK

After spending nearly two decades establishing herself across New York and Los Angeles independent music circles, Frankie Rose returns with a fresh form, aesthetic, and purpose embodied in her new album Love As Projection. Celebrated by countless critical and cultural outlets over the years for her expansive approach to songwriting, lush atmospherics, and transcendent vocal melodies and harmonies, Love As Projection is a reintroduction of her established style through the new lens of contemporary electronic pop.
Painstakingly written, recorded, and engineered through some of the most tumultuous times in history, this new collection of songs harnesses the power and propulsion of Frankie's early DIY-centric punk days without losing sight of the immersive, dreamlike world-building she's been known for in recent years. Featuring beautiful, ethereal songs like lead-off single "Anything," "Sixteen Ways" and "Come Back," this album is more than a rebirth, a refinement, a resurgence – it's a culmination of influence, a newly-defined scope using the tools at her disposal, and the most personal and accessible collection of art-pop that Frankie has delivered yet.

A Colossal Waste Of Light
• 1ST PRESSING CLEAR VINYL W/ PURPLE SMOKE
• 4TH STUDIO ALBUM, PRODUCED BY PETER BUCK, FEATURING NEW MEMEBER VICTOR KRUMMENACHER (CAMPER VAN BEETHOVEN)
Eyelids’ new album, A Colossal Waste of Light, does an excellent job of framing the quintet as one of today’s most compelling purveyors of lopsided guitar pop workouts and earworm-laden vocal melodies. It also proves that great guitar pop can still evoke favorites from a glorious past - the penetrating moodiness of XTC’s Black Sea, or R.E.M.’s Fables of the Reconstruction, comes to mind - while refusing to waste time on idle nostalgia.
On their 4th full-length album (but 17th vinyl offering if you include previous 7”s and EPs) the Portland, OR band also rediscover the beauty of firsts. A Colossal Waste of Light marks the first time the band wrote songs remotely (“it ended up being fun & weird to send out a very simple version of a song and see who came back first with another part for it”, John Moen looks back), their first reunion at the Destination: Universe studio post-isolation, and their first batch of melodious new tunes since The Accidental Falls, the band’s 2020 project with poet, lyricist and Tim Buckley collaborator Larry Beckett (an extra-ordinary pairing that allowed Eyelids’ two frontmen/tunesmiths, Chris Slusarenko and John Moen, to find a new, multilayered appreciation for the art of songcraft).
Most importantly, A Colossal Waste of Light is the first Eyelids album to feature new bass player Victor Krummenacher (Camper Van Beethoven, Monks of Doom). Eyelids had shared bills with Krummenacher a few times before he moved to Portland, but once he arrived he quickly found himself in a new town where everything was suddenly locked down. Luckily enough, there were eventual get-togethers in Slusarenko’s backyard and, finally one day, a most coveted question: “do you want me to play bass for your band?”. The artistry he brings to A Colossal Waste of Light is seasoned and fresh in equal measure. Alongside Jonathan Drews’ expressive yet mysteriously ethereal guitar playing and Paulie Pulvirenti’s imaginative and powerful drumming, the finished LP is the perfect summation of Eyelids’ new and old ways of collaborating together.
As for the record’s title, Slusarenko notes that it conjures “the parallel lines of dearly holding onto some sort of version of hope, all the while knowing everything's going to shit.” With all the feel of a lost late 70s classic, A Colossal Waste Of Light sounds both majestic and playfully open to multifaceted meanings and moods. It’s haunted and vibrant all at once, while putting some kicks back towards melancholy. Every track feels like its own journey and having songs from two songwriters at the top of their game makes for a most dynamic, immersive narrative as their songs follow one another throughout. As a whole, it’s thrilling, moving, mercurial, absorbing, soothing, and unmistakably Eyelids.

TAKE OFFS & LANDINGS
STREET DATE: MARCH 10, 2023
Having been recently reissued (and immediately sold-out) as a limited-edition 20th anniversary color variant, Rilo Kiley’s debut full-length double-LP Take Offs and Landings is back in print on standard-weight black vinyl.
At the beginning of the 2000’s, Rilo Kiley was a fiercely independent band, having released an EP under their own Rilo Records label. But, even with only very minimal touring outside of southern California, their brilliant live show and excellent songcraft started to attract a fair amount of national attention in publications like Harper's Bazaar and Rolling Stone, and even some airplay on MTV. The band initially self-released Take Offs and Landings before signing to Barsuk, who promptly reissued the album. Rilo Kiley quickly joined the ranks of labelmates Death Cab for Cutie and other acts such as Bright Eyes, The Shins, and The Decemberists as early ‘00s indie rock exploded into the mainstream.
While the band stopped releasing albums after 2007’s Under the Blacklight, their popularity has continued to grow in the subsequent years. In celebration of the 20th anniversary, Stereogum recently posted a lengthy feature on Take Offs and Landings’ influence over the current landscape of indie rock, quoting Waxahatchee’s Katie Crutchfield and noting “The way millennials have reminisced about Rilo Kiley’s personal impact often mirrors the language Generation X has used to describe the riot grrrl movement only a decade before. If Kathleen Hanna’s goal was to tell women in her crowds that their anger was justified, [the band’s primary songwriter and singer Jenny] Lewis represented the opposing side of the same coin via Rilo Kiley: It’s OK to be unabashedly and emphatically sad.”

THE BETHS JUMP ROPE GAZERS
Everything changed for The Beths when they released their debut album, Future Me Hates Me, in 2018. The indie rock band had long been nurtured within Auckland, New Zealand’s tight-knit music scene, working full-time during the day and playing music with friends after hours. Full of uptempo pop rock songs with bright, indelible hooks, the LP garnered them critical acclaim from outlets like Pitchfork and Rolling Stone, and they set out for their first string of shows overseas. They quit their jobs, said goodbye to their hometown, and devoted themselves entirely to performing across North America and Europe. They found themselves playing to crowds of devoted fans and opening for acts like Pixies and Death Cab for Cutie. Almost instantly, The Beths turned from a passion project into a full-time career in music.
Songwriter and lead vocalist Elizabeth Stokes worked on what would become The Beths’ second LP, Jump Rope Gazers, in between these intense periods of touring. Like the group’s earlier music, the album tackles themes of anxiety and self-doubt with effervescent power pop choruses and rousing backup vocals, zeroing in on the communality and catharsis that can come from sharing stressful situations with some of your best friends. Stokes’s writing on Jump Rope Gazers grapples with the uneasy proposition of leaving everything and everyone you know behind on another continent, chasing your dreams while struggling to stay close with loved ones back home.
“If you’re at a certain age, all your friends scatter to the four winds,” Stokes says. “We did the same thing. When you’re home, you miss everybody, and when you’re away, you miss everybody. We were just missing people all the time.”
With songs like the rambunctious “Dying To Believe” and the tender, shoegazey “Out of Sight,” The Beths reckon with the distance that life necessarily drives between people over time. People who love each other inevitably fail each other. “I’m sorry for the way that I can’t hold conversations/They’re such a fragile thing to try to support the weight of,” Stokes sings on “Dying to Believe.” The best way to repair that failure, in The Beths’ view, is with abundant and unconditional love, no matter how far it has to travel. On “Out of Sight,” she pledges devotion to a dearly missed friend: “If your world collapses/I’ll be down in the rubble/I’d build you another,” she sings.
“It was a rough year in general, and I found myself saying the words, ‘wish you were here, wish I was there,’ over and over again,” she says of the time period in which the album was written. Touring far from home, The Beths committed themselves to taking care of each other as they were trying at the same time to take care of friends living thousands of miles away. They encouraged each other to communicate whenever things got hard, and to pay forward acts of kindness whenever they could. That care and attention shines through on Jump Rope Gazers, where the quartet sounds more locked in than ever. Their most emotive and heartfelt work to date, Jump Rope Gazers stares down all the hard parts of living in communion with other people, even at a distance, while celebrating the ferocious joy that makes it all worth it — a sentiment we need now more than ever.

Blacklips Bar: Androgyns and Deviants — Industrial Romance for Bruised and Battered Angels, 1992–1995 is a compilation combining original recordings and select DJ tracks from the vaults of Blacklips Performance Cult, a collective of underground performers, artists and drag queens who took to NYC’s Pyramid Club stage every Monday night at 1 am to perform original plays. The broad spectrum of emotional expression, ferocity, humor and transgression evident in these collected recordings are a further indication of the group’s oeuvre.
In 1992, ANOHNI founded Blacklips Performance Cult with collaborators Johanna Constantine and Psychotic Eve. Originally intended as a cabaret and DJ night, the constellation of people drawn to Blacklips soon melded into a late night ensemble in which members took turns writing scripts that were then performed by the group. Blacklips continued a tradition of urban queer subcultural resistance embodied within the writings of Jean Genet, John Rechy, and the post-punk feminist Terence Sellers. Inspired by Lotte Lenya, Candy Darling, Greta Garbo and Sister Dimension, performers took the stage primarily to entertain and address each other, while entertaining late-night thrill seekers. The group staged spectacles that were alternately surreal, slapstick, emotional and absurd. This weekly laboratory also served as the first showcase for ANOHNI’s music.
Androgyns and Deviants places you squarely within the shiny black brick walls of the main dance floor at the Pyramid, bathed in shards of light from the disco ball, waiting for the show to begin amongst a gaggle of stragglers, queens, and voyeurs.A montage of sound bites, original recordings, and Blacklips DJ favorites emanate a sense of Blacklips bar’s joie de vivre. Remastered original recordings by ANOHNI, including an unreleased version of “Rapture,” as well as the never before released composition “The Yellowing Angel” suggest the feeling of suspension that would sometimes interrupt the hysteria.
Also included on the Androgyns and Deviants compilation are DJ tracks by artists including New York legend JoeyArias in his incarnation as BIllie Holiday, LA death rock founder Rozz WIlliams, avant-garde icon Diamanda Galás, UK punk pioneer Dave Vanian, underground actress Edith Massey, London surrealist Leigh Bowery and his band Minty, and the fictional characters Meng and Ecker, a pair of transsexual menaces who wrought nightmares across an anarchic landscape, the brainchild of Manchester publishing house, Savoy. Studio recordings by Blacklips stars add depth to the mix, including “Your Cigarette” by Blacklips duo coke, James F. Murphy’s hardcore camp bonanza “Satan’s ‘Lil’ Lamb”, Sissy Fitt’s “Sister Morphine” and EbonyJet’s soulful rendition of Lou Reed’s “Satellite of Love”. Dialogue, sound effects and ambient textures counter the raging gender panic of Princess Tinymeat’s “Angels in Pain” and Divine’s defiant Hi-NRG anthem “You Think You’re A Man”.
The work of Blacklips Performance Cult was unearthed for the first time at I3 Ways to Die, a recent exhibit at Participant Inc. in NYC, and in Blacklips Performance Cult: Her Life and Her Many Many Deaths, a hardcover edition book that is coinciding with this vinyl release. Blacklips Bar: Androgyns and Deviants — Industrial Romance for Bruised and Battered Angels, 1992–1995 will be released by Anthology Recordings on March 10, 2023 as a double album vinyl edition illustrated and designed by ANOHNI, and including previously unseen ephemera and extensive liner notes by the artist.

MDOU MOCTAR
Niger EPs - Vol. 1 & 2
“This is how free rock & roll should sound.”
— ROLLING STONE
Available on limited yellow (EP 1) & green vinyl (EP 2)
“In 2021, we started the Mdou Moctar mixtape series. These releases compiled field recordings, cell phone voice memos, interview clips, conversations captured in the tour van, and blown-out board recordings from shows all over the world. As a continuation of those mixtapes, we present the Niger EPs, which examine the roots of the Mdou Moctar band. Early Mdou recordings were contained on cassettes, though the humble tape was soon replaced by the quick and easy facility of cell phone technology.
Long bus rides are common in West Africa. On one of these rides, you might be seated next to a stranger and ask ‘what are you listening to?’, then a song exchange would begin over Bluetooth. This is a very real way artists found their music distributed far from home. In that vein, the Niger EP series features solely recordings taped in Mdou Moctar’s home country of Niger. Volume 1 begins the series with a mix of recordings from 20172020, documenting the band at weddings, picnics, rehearsals, and even impromptu house concerts. A must have for any Mdou Moctar fan!”

Shalom Sublimation
MARCH 10TH, 2023
Debut album featuring “Happenstance”, “Soccer Mommy”, and “Lighter”
LP includes digital download
Shalom makes strikingly direct music with such emotional openness and clarity that each track on her debut album Sublimation, out March 10, feels like a quiet revelation. While the Brooklyn-based, South Africa-raised artist writes fearlessly personal songs about moments in her life combining the storytelling of Lucy Dacus with the urgency of Indigo De Souza, her honesty is so blunt it’s inviting. Her lyrics clear whatever tension there is to make room for catharsis. These 13 tracks are a re ection of the many sides of herself with stories of heartbreak, feeling like an outsider, self-medicating and partying, and ultimately choosing love over fear. While she paints the edges of indie rock, Shalom along with her collaborator Ryan Hemsworth (Quarter-Life Crisis) team up for challenging and vivid arrangements that are danceable, driving, and also delicate.
Though Shalom has only been writing her own songs since the summer of 2020, she’d played bass in a band in the New Brunswick DIY scene. Following the dissolution of her band, she went through a period of mourning and writer’s block. “It was some of the most painful, creative experiences I've ever had,” she says. She wrote “Concrete,” the rst song she ever wrote and produced herself, as a way to process the loss of that creative outlet. It’s a gorgeous track complete with yearning strings and Shalom singing, “We watched the future that we built just slip away / I still think of you almost every day / But there are good things in life no one can force you to take.” Even though it was her debut song, there’s depth and generosity tucked in each line.
As much as the album hones in on processing her trauma like on “Train Station,” which deals with a sudden breakup, and “Nowadays” which deals with profound grief, there’s a resiliency that stays constant throughout Sublimation. On the ebullient and funky “Did It To Myself,” she opens herself up. She sings, “what hurts can be amazing / and now I’m back on my own, oh” over bouncy synths and a sparkling arrangement.
Shalom explains, “Anytime you move forward, you have to remember the past: Most of my songs are about moving forward by dealing with a memory.” Few songwriters not only fail to match Shalom’s excavating introspection but also the grace with which she deals with these uncomfortable truths. Many of the songs on Sublimation came together almost instantly with Shalom sitting down with her bass and coming out with a fully-written song in a couple of hours. Standout “Lighter,” Shalom recalls, took 45 minutes. Arguably the poppiest song on the record with its breezy indie rock arrangement, she sings over shimmering guitars, “so done with being myself / I’d rather be anyone else / I’m tired of being a ghter.” Despite the un inching subject matter, Sublimation is not a di cult listen. “The record is an introduction to me as a songwriter,” she says. “I think it shows my versatility, but really, it’s me being really honest, earnest, and naked. You can see my bones on this record. I'm okay with it though, because I’ve got to get it out.”

When we take advantage of the moment, we live life to the fullest. Reverent of the past and excited for the future, Say ZuZu makes the most of the present in their music. The New Hampshire six-piece—Cliff Murphy, brothers Jon and James Nolan, Steve Ruhm, Tim Nylander, and Jon Pistey—artfully thread together a reflective patchwork of folk, rock, alternative, and country powered by lifelong friendships and a collective ambition to “carpe diem.” As such, they sound as alive as ever on their seventh full-length offering and first original LP in 21 years, the aptly titled No Time To Lose.
“After years apart, we really looked to squeeze as much enjoyment out of making music together again. War on Drugs, Dylan, Paul Simon, Kathleen Edwards and others played a big part in influencing this batch of songs.” - Say ZuZu

Taking inspiration from Yellow Magic Orchestra, Prince, Steely Dan, Ennio Morricone, The Blue Nile, Kate Bush and Roxy Music, "True Entertainment behaves like it knows it's been away for some time, and doesn’t apologise for that," jokes vocalist / lyricist Duncan Wallis. "Ultimately, it's written with the mindset that on our sixth album, we’re only in competition with ourselves when it comes to finding satisfaction in our craft."
True to this mantra, True Entertainment bears some of the most delightfully fun Dutch Uncles music to date; paired with some of their most existential and introspective lyrics. What is success? Am I enough? How can I better? (and can I afford to be better?)
The title was a DJ name bestowed upon Wallis by guitarist Peter Broadhead. Wallis, an in-demand DJ and compare in his native city, wrote the acid house and Sign O’ The Times-era Princeinfluenced title track when reflecting on the awkwardness he sometimes feels when he’s recognised as the singer in a band while working one of his many public-facing jobs.
While bassist Wallis and bassist Robin Richards remain Dutch Uncles’ principle composers, the lockdowns of 2020 and 2021 prompted other members to contribute musical ideas: the result being their most collaborative album to date. This is evidenced further by Henry Broadhead and Neil Wright (live synth player and live guitarist, respectively) stepping up to production duties alongside the band themselves. The album also sees contributions from Anna Prior of Metronomy and Jonathan Higgs of Everything Everything. Henry Broadhead mixed the album with drummer Andrew Proudfoot, and it was mastered by Matt Colton (Pet Shop Boys, Christine And The Queens et al).
True Entertainment is the long-awaited follow up to Big Balloon (2017), an album which spawned three playlisted singles on BBC Radio 6 Music and enjoyed widespread acclaim from the likes of Uncut ("a high flying triumph" 8/10), The Guardian ("its songs barge in with urgency" 4*), The Quietus, DIY, Exclaim!, Q, Under the Radar and many, many more.

Moving from London to Hollywood back in 2014, Billy Tibbals quickly found a love for the city and its esoteric, debauched history. Combining this with his childhood obsession with British rock and roll, surrealist literature, and musicals from the 1940’s, Billy’s music presents a unique and fantastical view of the world around us As a part of the exciting new wave of rock and roll music emerging from Los Angeles, Billy hopes to inspire the youth to get off their phones and come join in with the fun. It’s only just begun!
This rock’n’roll sensation has quickly emerged as one of the great young hopes of the alternative LA music scene growing around Permanent Record Records Roadhouse and the other cool joints where the city's kids find their kicks these days. Billy Tibbals soon caught the eyes and ears of Brent Rademaker’s Curation Records whom now will release Tibbals first single “Onwards and Upwards” and Black Crowes-legend Chris Robinson signed them for their upcoming debut album for his label Silver Arrows Records/Sony.
The debut 7 inch from Tibbals is produced by Reza Matin from power pop wizards the Uni Boys, Tibbals compadres on the USA youthful rock scene with Matin also doing double duty as the drummer of Billy Tibbals Band

Throw together a washed out, but surprisingly fit garage rocker with too much time on his hands, a guitar, a smart phone, an old drum machine and fifty samples, and you’re as close as you can possibly get to minimum style done with maximum effort. And the latest effort from ex-Kwyet Kings and Lust-O-Rama (now DANG!!!) front man Arne Thelin in a decade and a half is in the shape of an album (LP/CD) on Apollon Records. Recorded the BITHAMMER! way, deep into the damp snake infested jungles of Surinam e and on pristine Caribbean is land beaches while sipping umbrella clad piña coladas, and stitched together with Yugoslavian precision in Podgorica, Montenegro. Minimum style and maximum effort indeed!

Featuring bass baritone Nicholas Isherwood and the Asasello Quartet
Sharp created a libretto from letters and writings of Beethoven as well as taking elements from Die Größe Fuge as seed materials for extrapolation, randomization, and recombinance. Beethoven is presented as a disturbed and effecting figure, the tortured genius. The performers play Sharp’s score, both apocalyptic and ecstatic, with incredible intensity.

After 1815, Beethoven was beset with problems: physical, emotional, financial. Retreating into “fugue” states, he has visions, celestial and horrific, not hallucinations but visitations from a parallel reality of marvelous inventions, gleaming ships in the air, unheard musics, carnage beyond belief. Emerging, he translates these scenes into a music that stretches the rules to the verge of destruction. The resultant work, Die Größe Fuge, is considered the first 20th century string quartet. Label

Renewed for a second season, Norwegian rockers DANG!!! is back with a short sharp shock of a follow up. The vinyl version will rotate at 45rpm giving this format a louder, richer noise. Taking up where Sociopathfinder left off, they continue to shape sound that serves to soundtrack these perilous times. It’s not pretty. Not ever. The mood is matter-of-factly ominous. The prospect of the apocalypse will do that to a combo but they’ve decided to go down blazing. The New Machine/Caliphate Hate/Go Away/Taste Of Cruel/Lost In Time/Perfection O f Means/Unlawful Interception. Those are your seven titles on The Will Of God. The cover depicts a mushroom cloud serving as a metaphor for the atomic nature of the contents and also a possible outcome of current world events. We’ll leave you to decipher the commentary. DANG!!! continue to make loud sounds that are created to strike a chord with the disenfranchised souls that are trapped in a world they never considered could be so stupid. 10. WHEN THE CYNICS STARE BACK FROM THE WALL 11. LATE DEVELOPERS
JANUARY 13, 2023
Recorded in the same sessions as ABitof Previous, LateDevelopers doesn’t feel like a collection of lesser-than songs that weren’t good enough to go on the “real” record. Rather, it’s an embrace of the freedom that comes with a jumbo-sized canvas, skilled students left unsupervised to paint whatever picture they feel like.
While I shudder to do the thing in a bio where I try to describe music to you with words, Late Developers takes you on a journey as the band floats through genres with ease – from the frantic Billy Bragg-with-hella-flute-energy of the opening track, “Juliet Naked,” and what I think might be Stevie Jackson’s best song (“So in the Moment”), into a legit all-out radio-ready dance party in the third quarter of the record (“When You’re Not With Me,” “Do You Follow”) which includes a Belle & Sebastian first, a co-write with young pop composer Pete Ferguson (“I Don’t Know What You See in Me”). They then unearth a 1994-era pre-Belle and Sebastian tune, “When the Cynics Stare Back From the Wall” with the help of Camera Obscura’s Tracyanne Campbell right before they bring you home at the end with a true bop (“Late Developers”).
