TEIJI ITO WATERMILL TZA CD 8058 Composer Series Steve Gorn * Tavia Ito * Mara Purl * Ralph Samuelson * Yukio Tsuji * Zishan Ugurlu. Prelude/Introduction * Spring* Running* Summer* Nightmare* Autumn* Winter/Epilogue FOCUS ON A TZADIK CLASSIC The fifth CD in Tzadik’s initiative to make available the music of Teiji Ito presents his undisputed masterpiece Watermill. Created in 1971 for the controversial ballet by Jerome Robbins and named for the town on Long Island where Robbins had a peaceful country home, Teiji draws upon Chinese, Tibetan, African, Native American and Japanese ceremonies in creating what many consider his most profound compositional achievement. Based on the ideas of cycles—years, moons, ages and seasons, Watermill is brilliantly brought to life by Teiji colleague Steve Gorn and a brilliant ensemble that includes Teiji’s daughter Tavia Ito. This is music of deep spirituality composed by a pioneer of the New York Underground who is finally getting the recognition he has long deserved.

Road Trips Vol. 2 No. 3— Wall of Sound (2-CD Set)
STREET DATE: MAY 14, 2021 Dead chronicler Dennis McNally’s liner notes to this Road Trip are a must-read, succinctly expounding upon how Bear’s vision of creating a sound system free of distortion morphed into a 641-speaker monster (there’s a great picture of it inside the booklet) that required three trucks to transport and five hours to set up, almost bankrupting the band and causing them to retire from the road for almost two years. But it was truly a singular sonic achievement, one that, as McNally puts it, “allowed the band to go places they’d only dreamed of.” The two shows excerpted on this 2-CD set, 6/16/74 at the State Fairgrounds in Des Moines and 6/18/74 at Freedom Hall in Louisville, beautifully illustrate the point: with a PA this loud, the band could play softer, freeing them to mesh ever more subtly and intricately. The Des Moines “Eyes of the World” is simply definitive, and the Louisville medley of “Weather Report Suite”/”Jam”/”The Other One”/”It’s a Sin Jam”/”Stella Blue” is one-ofa-kind. This Trip’s a treasure…first time ever available at regular music retail!

SEEFEEL (Ch-Vox) Redux Seefeel’s third studio album was recorded for Richard D James and Grant Wilson-Claridge’s Rephlex label, as a return favour for two remixes Aphex Twin (a huge fan of the group) did in their Too Pure period. This is the first time it has been available on vinyl since 1996 and adds an extra LP of bonus material, mastered from original DAT transfers by Stefan Betke aka Pole. Comes housed in a new gatefold sleeve by the Designers Republic. “Mark Clifford and his mates have moved through labels like Astralwerks and Warp before landing at the front door of the Richard James label Rephlex, and along the way they have scattered some wonderful pearls. For (CH-VOX), it's an especially lush match of aesthetics -- sort of a condensed version of the Aphex Twin landmark record, Selected Ambient Works II. Picking up at the tail end of Seefeel's last album, Succour, we once again hear "Utreat," a dark meditation of phrases that makes Darren Seymour's bass sound like an electric piano, or is it Clifford's electric piano that sounds like a bass? Sarah Peacock's dreamy vocals hover almost out of earshot, and possibly her guitar is plugged in somewhere, too. It's difficult to say with many of their songs what instrument we're hearing, since treatments and effects play such a major role in production. The song "E-HIX2" breathes like a cluster of bleak skyscrapers with an extremely ambient take on feedback, and the title cut, "CH-VOX," is stark, patient, and ominous -- an abandoned submarine frozen in ice. "Hive" (with wonderful vocal loop effects) has Clifford revisiting his somewhat limited palette of percussion -- a piece that teeters between beauty and agitation, and an unfortunate weak spot for the album. The album closes with "Net," which is nothing short of masterpiece -- a journey, a drive through wet streets at midnight, and a finale so captivating you'll want to hear it twice -- somewhat postponing the disappointment that the album is only 33 minutes long.” Keir Langley, All Music

SEEFEEL SUCCOUR (REDUX) Seefeel’s second studio album and their debut for Warp. This expanded 3LP edition is the first time it has been available on vinyl since original release and adds an extra LP of bonus material, mastered from original DAT transfers by Stefan Betke aka Pole.
its most ethereal.
“On Seefeel’s 1993 debut album, Quique, the British quartet navigated a course between shoegaze and ambient dub—but by 1995, the electronic undercurrents of their sound had carried them to a very different place. Maybe it was the influence of Aphex Twin, whose remixes had honed in on the clean-lined rhythmic skeleton lurking beneath the group’s atmospheric swirl: The rolling, distorted drums of Succour’s “Fracture” and “Vex” are straight out of his playbook, and the beatless, bookending tracks “Meol” and “Utreat” both evoke Selected Ambient Works Vol. II at
While the album’s textures and titles are often reminiscent of Autechre’s Amber, which came out the year before on Warp, Seefeel never entirely cast off their post-rock roots; squint through the fog of songs like “Extract” and “Cut,” and you can just barely pick out the familiar silhouettes of guitar, bass, drums, and microphone against the murk. Still, there’s no mistaking the common cause they make with the era’s knob-twisters and brain-dancers. Despite the echoes of other touchstones of the time (“Gatha” sounds like Massive Attack being dragged deep into an underwater cavern), it’s a singular album that has no equivalent—a sound so elemental, it’s no wonder the Designers Republic chose the cover they did.” – Philip Sherburne (#30 in the Pitchfork list of 50 greatest IDM albums)

The pint-size sleaze queen helmed a variety of oddball exploitation classics that featured unique gimmicks and unusual, sometimes shocking subject matter. The Best Of Doris Wishman features audio from theatrical trailers, original theme songs, as well as some jazzy incidental library music from legendary exploiteers in the Something Weird world that are cherished and adored for the body of work they created, plus a zine-style insert and a DVD filled with Doris’ outrageous oeuvre! You know you're in for a wild ride when "Produced and Directed by Doris Wishman'' appears in the opening credits. Self-taught and unencumbered by rules and expectations, Doris did her own thing, writing outrageous scripts derived from her wildly fertile imagination. The fact that she started making films at age 47 is mind-boggling in and of itself. Not very many nice middle-aged ladies in the 1960s were behind the camera shooting dirty movies. Needless to say, Doris was an iconoclast.

Artist: Mother Trucker Title: Mother Trucker Blue Vinyl LP Box Lot Quantity: 30 LP File Under: Rock LP 5587 UPC: 090771558718 Release Date: 5/14/21 FIRST EVER US RELEASE!
LIMITED TO 500!
Brazen Guitar Heavy All Girl Glam! A truckload of rootsy yet lumbering cuts with funk grooves and glammy swagger. Where do you find a funked out southern rock feel without any Y chromosomes? The West London borough of Hounslow, of course. Billboard called them a “women’s lib rock group,” which fits as they were liberally liberating hooks while being proud of their sexuality. First ever US pressing, strictly limited to 500 copies all pressed on colored vinyl! This record carries a bit of mystery to it, one online reviewer said, “Classify under the Glam Girls Hall of Fame.....Mother Trucker are fine examples of Tuff Glam Crunch-a-rama in Punchin' Judy mode with extra horn(s). Signed by the US branch of Ember by John Madara, Mother Trucker was an all-girl UK outfit supposedly with a background in road haulage (yeah right...).” Were they actually truckers? Doubt it. Were they actually the women on the cover? ...depends on which cover. Depending on the territory this record was released in the lineup seemed to change. The one thing that remained constant was the powerhouse “Allman Sisters” glammy but blue collar good ol’ rock & roll. We’re proud to finally bring this lumbering rocker stateside.

Artist: Annette Peacock Title: X-Dreams Gold Vinyl LP / CD Box Lot Quantity: 30 LP / 60 CD File Under: Free Jazz, Avant-garde LP 5589 UPC: 090771558916 SC 6350 UPC: 090771635020 Release Date: 5/14/21 Arriving in 1978, X-Dreams is an infatuating and resolutely feminine free-form exploration of the politics and dynamics of sex. In the pursuit to reconcile the duality of attraction & repulsion and love & cruelty, the album oscillates between an assertive opening side and a sweeter side B. Assembling a crew of 22 musicians (including Mick Ronson on guitar and Bill Bruford on drums), Peacock delivers impassioned vocal performances alongside an improvisational jazz-rock fusion masterpiece of musicianship, almost all of which was recorded in one take. Self-taught musician and composer Annette Peacock has described her early style as “free-form” songwriting. She came to prominence in New York City’s early 1960s jazz scene alongside players like Ornette Coleman, an association that puts her at the helm of what we now consider the free jazz movement. For all its complication, her approach suggests that music can and should be made by any one, in any way they want, with any one they want. She may talk-sing her lyrics through a melody like a Beat poet. She may wail out of her throat like a saxophone. She may invite another instrument to the podium to make its own statement. Or, she may rest a note out in the open, confidently enthroned on an apex of self-governance. Where most musicians riff, she creates sonic space.

Artist: Annette Peacock Title: The Perfect Release Red Vinyl LP / CD Box Lot Quantity: 30 LP / 60 CD File Under: Free Jazz, Avant-garde LP 5590 UPC: 090771559012 SC 6351 UPC: 090771635129 Release Date: 5/14/21 Released in 1979, this prophetic stew of spoken word, jazz, and funk from Annette Peacock was wildly ahead of its time and is still salient today. Her unflinching examinations of capitalism, sex, religion, et al. are underscored by lengthy, gorgeous grooves. Peacock wields her voice with wild abandon, at times delivering a melody like a Beat poet while other times wailing out of her throat like a saxophone, hitting blue notes as she pleases. Where most musicians riff, she creates sonic space. Perhaps too esoteric to garner commercial praise at the time, with this reissue we’re proud to encourage the discovery and praise that The Perfect Release deserves. Annette Peacock is one of jazz’s greatest voices. She is a musician, singer, songwriter, producer, composer, and arranger. Though her mother was a professional violinist, and she did a short stint at The Juilliard School, she is considered primarily to be a self-taught musician, composing and writing since early childhood. It is her ability to occupy both worlds of formalized practice and freedom of expression that is the crux of her identity as an artist. Her music contains a duality of deep self-awareness and projecting social criticism where meaning is obscured with austerity. A distinguishing part of her vision seems to be her intention to write music that is not bound by structures of power, which precisely how she manages to remain grounded in any style at all.

SPECIAL INTEREST TRUST NO WAVE A reissue of the 2016 demo tape by the New Orleans band who combine elements of no wave, glam and industrial music. First time vinyl pressing with bonus track, new sleeve designed by Studio Tape Echo and 8 page risographed zine insert. Four of the tracks here are raw early versions of songs that would appear in slightly more refined form on their debut album, 2018’s Spiralling. The other four pieces are unique to this release, including a cover version of Italian new wave band Chrisma, raging opener “Disease”, the over-saturated shoegaze-punk of “ATC'' and comedown lament “I’ll Never Do Ketamine Again”. The band’s second album The Passion Of (2020) was widely acclaimed and appeared in many album of the year lists. It was recently followed by a companion album of remixes on Boy Harsher’s Nude Club label, with all profits going to NOLA charity House Of Tulip. “A blistering vision of punk as possibility.” - Pitchfork “Members Alli Logout (vocals), Ruth Mascelli (synth and drum machine), Maria Elena (guitar), and Nathan Cassiani (bass), together manage to make their instruments and vocals sound like a fight for our existence.” - The Quietus Recorded and Mastered by Jasper Denhartigh at Bird Island Recording March-May 2016. Originally self-released on cassette in 2016. Cut by Beau Thomas at Ten Eight Seven. All songs by Special Interest except “Black Silk Stalking” written by Chrisma.

Plunky & Oneness of Juju - Make A Change Strut present the definitive edition of a 1977 classic, Plunky & Oneness Of Juju’s ‘Make A Change’ album featuring the international hit ‘Every Way But Loose’ and five previously unheard studio takes.
Recorded at Omega studios in Maryland, the album marked a transition for the band with lead vocalist Jackie Eka-Ete recording her last sessions with Plunky and Virtania Tillery taking over lead vocal duties. “‘Make A Change’ was always designed as a slightly more commercial entry in our discography,” says Plunky. “We approached the sessions in the same way that we had approached all of our music since the early ‘70s. We played extended jams because we would always find something within those explorations. The songs had enough organic qualities to be considered R&B and enough rhythm to be Afro funk.” After catching fire in Washington DC clubs through local record pools, the dancefloor favourite ‘Every Way But Loose’ famously became an anthem for Larry Levan at New York’s Paradise Garage, kick-starting international success for the track. Other album cuts like funk workout ‘Higher’ and the wistful stepper ‘Always Have To Say Goodbye’ have remained staples among soulful DJs worldwide. “The songs and lyrics on this album have come back around full circle,” continues Plunky. “With songs like ‘(Family Tree) Make A Change’ and ‘Every Way But Loose’, we don’t have to change one word for them to be relevant all these years later. The positive messages are universal and timeless.” This definitive edition of ‘Make A Change’ features the full original album alongside five previously unheard studio takes, all remastered by The Carvery from the original tapes. Bonus tracks include extended studio versions of ‘Every Way But Loose’ and ‘Always Have To Say Goodbye’ and a previously unheard version of ‘Time’. Package features brand new liner notes by bandleader Plunky Branch. Released on CD, 2LP, digital and streaming.

Southern Energy Ensemble Strut presents the first full international release for another lost classic from the Black Fire Records archives, ‘Southern Energy’, the only album recorded by R’n’B and jazz collective Southern Energy Ensemble in 1977. Trumpeter Marvin Daniels had been drafted into the US army in Germany during the mid-‘70s, playing in the military touring band 100% Pure Poison. Upon returning to Virginia State College, he met up with an old friend, saxophonist Al Clarke, and they began to form a new band, pulling together various students from the University including Nat Lee (keys), William “Spike” Johnson (drums and percussion) and Adolphus “Peddie” Maples (percussion and vocals). “As Southern Energy, we started playing the chitlin R’n’B circuit and ended up gigging most weekends at clubs, universities and military bases in Virginia and North and South Carolina,” remembers Daniels. After meeting Plunky Branch and Black Fire Records MD and producer, Jimmy Gray at a JuJu gig in Richmond, Virginia, Gray signed the band and they recorded some high energy sessions during 1977. “Southern Energy was tight,” continues Daniels. “We had great musicians and great vocalists in Judy Spears and Garrie Wayne, both vocal majors from Virginia State College. The album was all about positive messages and celebrating real people.” Tracks include the storming dancefloor jazz workout ‘Third House’, the optimistic ballad ‘Looking Ahead’ and the extended funk anthem ‘F-U-N-K-Y ‘Til The Day I Die’. The band would break up soon after the members left college. Daniels moved to Philadelphia to work with Evelyn “Champagne” King in 1978 before co-founding Chops horns who would go on to become one of the most in-demand US session units of the ‘80s, working with Sugarhill Gang, The Police, The Rolling Stones and more. Maples would go on to play on sessions for Oneness Of Juju. Canned following the original recording, the Southern Energy Ensemble album eventually surfaced on a limited CD and LP on Black Fire in 1993. Now receiving its first full international release, ‘Southern Energy’ has been remastered from the original tapes by The Carvery. Package features unseen photos and brand new sleeve notes by co-bandleader Marvin Daniels. Released on CD, 1LP, digital and streaming.

Ian McDonnell is an Irish producer living in Wicklow near Dublin. Alongside his solo releases as Eomac he's also one half of the duos Lakker, noeverything and Lena Andersson. 'Cracks' represents a change of scenery and a change of practice from his previous two albums which were both conceptualised from the outset and recorded while living in Berlin. In contrast 'Cracks' was made in a beautiful rural part of Ireland without any outside pressure. These circumstances allowed Ian to wipe the slate clean and make an album guided by his mood on any particular day, connecting into the subtle power of his new environment and reflecting it, rather than working to please the suffocating demands of clublife. The title 'Cracks' comes from the idea that, to quote Leonard Cohen, a crack is "how the light gets in", but also of course it's a title that bears witness to the cracks fomenting in the world right now.

The music comes across with depth and passion, sounding deep and mossy with Eomac's penchant for punchy, shuffling drums underpinning the emotive tracks. From the off, the furious 'Mandate For Murder' flips and repeats Akala's protest about systemic racism, rushing deep into the panicked sirens of 'Portuguese Man O' War'. The album settles into a sense of mystery, wildness and dark otherworldliness with the foggy drone and timber kick of 'Ancient Self' reflecting the awe and spiritual connections to his new environment, much like the gorgeous strings and aqueous bleeps of 'Seashells' or the pitchshifted shoegaze of 'Prophetess'. At other points it responds to the human condition, for instance the cathartic 'Falling Through the Cracks' where a broken scream is pitted against clattering drums. At other moments it simply reaches out; 'Reasons to Live's' whispered mantra of "I know you are loved by somebody" is gently insistent. It ends with a reference to a place he's left behind, seen through the lens of nature. 'All the Rabbits in the Tiergarten' could be a missing track from Aphex's Ambient Works, albeit with cut-up scissoring drums. The album is a fruitful move, inwards and forwards.

Vallens I n Era
The most fascinating and lasting artists to trip across the vast field we know as popular music are the ones who consistently allow us to ride shotgun along with them as they figure out who they are as artists. Vallens are moving along such rarified lines. On In Era, their 2nd full length LP, vocalist, guitarist, keyboardist, songwriter Robyn Phillips and the stable Vallens core of bassist/multi-instrumentalist Devon Henderson and drummer Colin J. Morgan are growing more confidently defined, if tantalizingly and willfully indistinct. In Era is a patient, sculpted piece of work that’s been obsessively “lived with” and laboured over by Vallens. But it’s also much less of a “guitar-band” record than you’d anticipate from an ensemble that established itself as fairly proficient with pedals and feedback and the like on 2016’s Consent LP and 2018’s follow-up EP Dimmed In My Display. This is a slow burn, pushing Phillips’ primary instrument – her voice – and keyboards and electronics to the forefront to establish a mood Phillips describes as “nocturnal and austere-yet-deprived” and evocative of a “romantic, coquettish letter to the Void” for the duration.

The first single “If I Don’t,” expertly aligns the Vallens you already know with the Vallens of the future, that perhaps most perfectly captures this moment in the band’s evolution. In Era is a transitional album for a band that’s established quite quickly that it intends to remain in transition indefinitely. And, due to current global circumstances during the COVID-19 era, its haunted “Alright, what’s next?” thematic content has wound up becoming oddly prescient. Albeit accidentally.“It’s largely about a transitional time in someone’s life where they have ended an era of their life and can see the next one forming but are floating in between two things,” says Phillips. “It was written before COVID times but it weirdly feels even more apt and appropriate now,“ It’s about being right in between, right in the limbo of two really large events, and the tenderness and weirdness and sadness and uncertainty and beauty and all of the complicated and vexing feelings that can come with that moment of being in between two things, when you can feel the heaviness of being nowhere. That’s applicable to everyone right now, with COVID. So I’m hoping it resonates with people in that regard.” “While You Are Still Waiting” listed in SELECTS “13 Songs You Should Listen To Now” - PITCHFORK “If I Don’t” (Feb 14th) play & “Difference Repeating” (March 14th) premiere - The Strombo Show / CBC Music

Petter Carlsen- The Sum of Every Shade Function Records CD FR029LP FR029CD 7041881000256 LP 7041881000263
Hailing from the far north of Norway’s Arctic circle, Alta, Petter Carlsen creates his own unique mix of progressive rock and indie-pop without limits; fusing atmospheric vocals, melancholic soundscapes and indie guitars with a prog feeling. His new record “The Sum Of Every Shade”, is exactly that. Taking inspiration from all aspects of his career, from his prog rock explorations with Anathema's Daniel Cardoso, his epic rock duo Pil & Bue, his own solo career and his indie folk contributions with Juliet Alapnes, Petter’s broad range of influences is on full display on this record. Bringing them together with influences from Micheal Jackson to hard rock from his teenage years, into a seamless fusion of atmospheric indie rock. “The Sum Of Every Shade” is Petter's nostalgic acid trip. After moving home to the North since living in the capital of Norway, Petter contemplates growth and the experiences that made him who he is. As well as the continual growth we strive towards as humans. With longtime collaborator Kristian Olstad producing and a host of musicians he’s met through his career contributing, Petter Carlsen is now a family affair. And this stands to be their best work yet. 1/ I Love The Way You See The World 2/ Dogs 3/ Strangers 4/ Contradictions 5/ Pages 6/ Giraffes and Elephants 7/ Good News 8/ Beneath The Snow 9/ Funny Old Life 10/ The Enterprise

Long Black Electric Cadillac Mississippi Phone Booth / The Music Is Hot All The Lilacs In Ohio / I’m In Asheville Light Of The Burning Sun / Little Goodnight Buddy Boy / Changes In My Mind Keen Rambler / Sweet Dream In the midst of a global pandemic, John Hiatt walked into Historic RCA Studio B and opened up a lifetime full of leftover feelings. A half-century ago, Hiatt lived in a ratty, $15-a-week room on Nashville’s 16th Avenue, less than a mile away from the RCA and Columbia studios that were the heartbeat of what had come to be known as “Music Row.” In the ensuing 50 years, he went from a scuffling young buck to a celebrated grand master of song. With Leftover Feelings, Hiatt teamed up with multi-grammy winning artist and producer, Jerry Douglas and his band, The Jerry Douglas Band. There’s no drummer, yet these grooves are deep and true. And while the up-tempo songs are, as ever, filled with delightful internal rhyme and sly aggression, the Jerry Douglas Band’s empathetic musicianship nudges Hiatt to performances that are startlingly vulnerable. In life, leftover feelings can remain unresolved, no matter how often explored. Explicated in a place of history, a place of comfort. A sacred place, if you believe the documentation of human expression to be a holy thing. Here then, with this album, there is a meeting of bruised and triumphant American giants. Here are Hiatt and Douglas, creating the meant-to-be: Love songs and road songs, sly songs and hurt songs. Their songs, and now our songs. OVERVIEW my bloody valentine, the quartet of Bilinda Butcher, Kevin Shields, Deb Googe and Colm Ó Cíosóig, are widely revered as one of the most groundbreaking and influential groups of the past forty years. During an era in which guitar bands denoted, at best, a retro-classicism, not only did my bloody valentine sound unlike any of their contemporaries, the band achieved the rare feat of sounding like the future. Re-emerging in 2013 after two full decades in relative hiding, their third album m b v is by turns their most experimental record but also their most melodic and immediate; proof real of their unerring desire for reinvention. Continuing to push boundaries of both music and genre, m b v is an album of astonishing music, some of which could lay claim to being of a type never been made before. Otherworldly, intimate and a visceral listen, m b v is a startling and beautiful metamorphosis of what was known of the my bloody valentine sound, pushing the boundaries of genre unlike any other band. The album’s closer, “Wonder 2” is an example of this, seeing Shields meld hypnotic guitar with drum’n’bass to astonishing result.

Although born in Flushing, Queens, in the summer of 1993, Yaeji’s roots are scattered between Seoul, Atlanta, and Long Island. She moved back to the states from Korea in 2011 to study fine arts at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, where she broadcast her very first DJ sets at WRCT, the university’s radio station. The prospect of making music didn’t cross her mind until she joined WRCT; she’s inspired by both the Korean indie rock and electronica that she listened to as a teenager in Seoul and late ’90s and early 2000s hip hop and R&B. What We Drew is Yaeji’s first full-length release, and entirely self-produced, but she’s careful to classify it as a mixtape, which belies the way that these songs came together. “Each track is almost like a snippet of my life, a look into my diary or something, where it’s reflective of how I was specifically feeling during that time.” PRESS “one of the most trailblazing young producers in the dance music scene” – EDM.com “WHAT WE DREW… is just what the world’s been waiting for: a full-length exploration of who Yaeji is, the many voices that occupy her soul, and how she brings everything together into one endlessly dreamy experience.” – MTV News “Kathy Lee comes correct with an irresistible mixtape for XL Recordings.” – Resident Advisor SELLING POINTS • Named a Best Album of 2020 by The New Yorker, Pitchfork, Vice, Uproxx and more • Limited edition splatter vinyl sold out in a few days • 10K+ total equivalent units sold in the US including over 9 million streams • Magazine covers include Crack Magazine, Mixmag, and The FACE

*All information is strictly under embargo until announcement on 29th March* Piano Day 2021 sees Nils Frahm surprise the world with his Erased Tapes debut. Wait, what? How? Anyone who has seen the trail blazing sonic pioneer live will know Nils likes to deadpan a joke. Graz is in fact the first studio album he recorded for the label back in 2009, that somehow remained a secret… until now. Nils Frahm has quietly changed the musical landscape, reincarnating the centuries old figure of a pianist-composer for a new generation of music fans. As Nils’ word-of-mouth popularity grew and grew, so did the pop-culture profile of his instrument. He founded Piano Day with a team of like-minded friends in 2015 to help that process, some years releasing an album of piano recordings to celebrate one of humankind’s greatest inventions. Graz is one such record; an unheard snapshot of a young Nils recorded at Mumuth, the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz, in 2009 as part of the thesis Conversations for Piano and Room produced by Thomas Geiger, which received an award in the Classical Surround Recording category at the 127th AES Convention in New York. Whilst at the time it was decided to keep the grand piano recordings from the Graz sessions locked away and instead focus on his close mic’ed, dampened piano explorations which would become his acclaimed studio album Felt in 2011, two of the pieces — most notably Hammers — lived on as part of his live set, and were expanded on and re-recorded as part of his breakthrough 2013 record Spaces (a collage of field recordings from concerts which broke the Fourth Wall and included audience coughs). Over his mercurial career, Nils has pushed and pulled at the boundaries and parameters of his prolific work like that. He’s physically changed his piano (the softened prepared strings of Felt) played with a modified body (Screws recorded with 9 fingers and a broken thumb) played with scale (Solo recorded on the 3.7 metre high Klavins M370) and with the different layers of formats (last year’s Tripping with Nils Frahm nested his studio setup inside a live performance, concert film and live album). Now with Graz he has found the final frontier for play: time itself and his own discography. Graz is a moment of time at the very beginning of Nils’ quiet revolution. The essential genius is already evident; the harmonic language of classical, and the immediacy of jazz. Nils seems to pull down each idea moment by moment, gently, to not scare away the muse. He describes: “sometimes when you hear a piano, you might think it’s a conversation between a woman and a man. At the same time, it can hint at shapes of the universe and describe how a black hole looks. You can make sounds that have no relation to anything we can measure.”

Inspired by Mount Paektu, Seeking New Gods, the latest solo record from Gruff Rhys, sees the Super Furry Animals frontman mythologize a compelling sonic mountain of his own making. Featuring the backing band from 2018’s Babelsberg, most of album’s songs were refined during sound checks and live performances as the group toured around America’s West Coast before decamping to the Mojave desert for a short, but intensive recording session. The remaining tracks were recorded in a similar fashion by Ali Chant (PJ Harvey, Aldous Harding) in Bristol following Rhys’ 2019 European dates. Produced by Rhys himself, the album was mixed by long time collaborator, legendary Beastie Boys producer Mario Caldato Jr, at his Los Angeles studio. So how do the finished songs of this new pop peak feel? Opener “Mausoleum of My Former Self” grapples with reminders of our many pasts through charming pianos, wild trumpets and Rhys’ soulful vocals. Single “Loan Your Loanliness” is a stomping, bristling nonsense-lyric pop song dedicated to those who endure the solitary peaks that outlast civilizations; it also happens to feature Rhys’ longest guitar solo on record to date. Later album cut “Hiking in Lighting” brings to mind violent weather with a powerful tide of fuzz grounded by the cosmic Solina string synth – a soothing presence felt throughout the entire freewheeling affair. With a host of warm, personal touches and golden melodies, Seeking New Gods offers a dazzling view.

‘Medieval Femme’, Fatima Al Qadiri’s new ten track suite inspired by the classical poems of Arab women, invokes a daydream through the metaphor of an Islamic garden, at the border between depression and desire, where the present temporarily dissolves, leaving only past and future. Mixing neon drones and the faint outlines of Arabesque melody, ‘Medieval Femme’ reveals a fully-realised, dreamlike setting, shaded with colour and subtle friction. Conveying a thematic state of melancholic longing, Fatima seeks to transport the listener to a place of reverie and desolation, to question the line between two seemingly opposite states and rejoice in celestial sorrow. ‘Medieval Femme’ takes instrumentation from music of the Middle Ages, recast in a futuristic setting; soft-synth lutes, organs and pipes reverberate in space while gauzy pulses ripple in response. Fatima's vocals of repeated, mantra-like phrases are sometimes pitched and altered, drawing out increasingly intense peaks, angelic choruses and yearning incantations. On ‘Tasakuba’, Kaltham Jassim’s recitation of a couplet from the 7th century poet Al-Khansa', the sorrow of her words are given a turbulent, hallucinatory setting, before the album resolves on the final song, the limpid, airy ‘Zandaq’.

In the late ‘60s and early ‘70s, the art form we call jazz exploded into endless permutations, including free jazz, spiritual jazz, soul jazz, fusion, and funk. At that time, a number of black-run collectives organically sprang up across America, including Watts-based UGMAA (Union of God’s Musicians and Artists Ascension), Chicago’s AACM (Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians), Brooklyn’s CBA (Collective Black Artists), and Detroit’s The Tribe. And from Oakland came Black Jazz Records, founded by pianist Gene Russell and percussionist Dick Schory, with a mission statement “to promote the talents of young African American jazz musicians and singers.” Under Russell’s artistic direction, the label only put out 20 albums during its short, 4-year (1971-1975) tenure; and then, due to ownership issues and general neglect, the label went underground. Way underground, in fact… but not so far down that a new generation of crate diggers and DJ’s weren’t able to discover the label’s incredible array of modal, soul, funk, and free jazz, much of it imbued with the political and spiritual concerns of the day (and selling for a pretty penny online). Finally, in the ‘90s and early ‘oughts, the Black Jazz catalog emerged on CD in Japan; but for the most part, the entire label’s output was never reissued on vinyl anywhere. After years of trying, we at Real Gone Music finally were able to connect with the rights-holders in early 2020…right before quarantine and the subsequent events that triggered worldwide protests for racial equality. Obviously, the release of this politically aware material, originally recorded in an era of similar social and cultural ferment, couldn’t be more timely. But this music succeeds on a deeper level than just a reminder that the struggle against prejudice continues unabated 50 years later. It offers manifold moments of beauty that remind all of us of our common humanity and the love that, if we let it, binds us all. We are very, very proud to present the Black Jazz catalog on LP, remastered by Mike Milchner at Sonic Vision Mastering, and pressed on black vinyl at Gotta Groove Records with lacquer cutting by Clint Holley and Dave Polster at Well Made Music. Produced by Real Gone Music’s own Gordon Anderson, each vinyl reissue features the original black-and-white Black Jazz album artwork, which, on early releases, featured an identical front and back cover, with the back cover turned “upside down,” allowing for the album title to be visible regardless of how the LP was sitting in the record store rack. And, both our vinyl and CD releases will feature added liner notes by Pat Thomas, author of Listen Whitey! The Sounds of Black Power that draw a straight line between what was happening then…and what is happening right now. Real Gone Music will donate $500 to the Equal Justice Initiative with the release of each Black Jazz album.
DOUG CARN: Infant Eyes (Remastered CD & Vinyl Edition) STREET DATE: MAY 21, 2021 Keyboardist Carn’s 1971 debut record for Black Jazz introduced his stylistic wrinkle of adding lyrics to jazz classics like John Coltrane’s “Acknowlegement (A Love Supreme),” Horace Silver’s “Peace,” and Wayne Shorter’s title track, all sung by the gorgeous, thrilling voice of his wife Jean Carn. A crack outfit of drummer Michael Carvin, saxophonist/flautist George Harper, trombonist Al Hall, Jr., trumpeter Bob Frazier, and bassist Henry Franklin (himself leader of two treasured Black Jazz releases) backs the couple. A moving, beautiful listen that sounds ever more contemporary. Highly recommended!
DOUG CARN Featuring the Voice of JEAN CARN: Revelation (Remastered CD & Vinyl Edition)
STREET DATE: MAY 21, 2021 Aside from McCoy Tyner’s “Contemplation,” John Coltrane’s “Naima,” and René McLean sic McClean’s “Jihad,” Doug Carn himself takes the composing reins on this masterful 1973 release, which further integrates Jean Carn’s ethereal yet soulful vocals into the his impressive stylistic vision. And this time the band includes such heavyweights as trumpeter Olu Dara, bassist Walter Booker, and drummer Ira Williams. All of Carn’s albums for Black Jazz are classics; this one might just be first among equals.

STEVE REID Nova 21st May 2021
Soul Jazz Records are issuing the debut 1976 album from the legendary Steve Reid in a new edition 1000 only TRANSPARENT RED coloured vinyl (+download code). 'A truly phenomenal artist.' GILLES PETERSON 'Steve Reid is one of the greatest drummers. He is a musical genius' KIERAN HEBDEN (Four Tet) As a radical jazz artist, Steve Reid played with an extraordinary group of artists – including Miles Davis, Sun Ra, Fela Kuti, James Brown, Ornette Coleman, Lester Bowie, Freddie Hubbard, Jackie McLean, Dionne Warwick, Archie Shepp, Chief Bey, Olatunji, Arthur Blythe, Dextor Gordon, Gary Bartz, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Sam Rivers, Leon Thomas, Lonnie Smith and Horace Silver! Reid was born in the South Bronx, and grew up in Queens, New York. He played in the house band at Harlem's Apollo Theatre, accompanying James Brown, as well as playing in Sun Ra's Arkestra. He lived next to John Coltrane, worked in a department store with Ornette Coleman, had a son who played drums with NWA. He began his career as a teenager in the 1960s as a drummer at Motown when he played on Martha and The Vandellas "Heatwave" (aged 14). At the end of the 1960s Reid was sentenced to four years in jail as a conscientious objector of the Vietnam war. On his release from prison in 1974, he formed the Legendary Master Brotherhood and started the independent record label, Mustevic Sound, to release his debut LP Nova in 1976. This album is released in its entirety and with full original cover art here. Nova was the first in a series of stunning independent records he released in the 1970s. At the start of the 21st century, his career took a new twist when Steve Reid began a successful collaboration with Kieran Hebden (Four Tet). Hebden referred to Reid as his ‘musical soul mate’, resulting in a number of joint albums. Steve Reid died in New York in 2010. Subsequently the Steve Reid Foundation was set up in his name, to help aspiring musicians and artists.

An artist at the top of his game, JOHN PALUMBO serves up an even dozen of finely crafted and expertly recorded gems on HOLLYWOOD BLVD. He plays all the instruments on the album himself, sans a number of key acoustic and electric slide guitar contributions from his Crack The Sky bandmate, Bobby Hird. Produced and created at PALUMBO’s home studio, HOLLYWOOD BLVD was mastered by longtime CTS associate R. Lee Townsend at Real Time Studios. The earwig-inducing sonic avenues and cleverly winding wordsmithed roads that comprise HOLLYWOOD BLVD continue to cement PALUMBO’s status as a shrewdly observational songwriter in the vein of Leonard Cohen and Lou Reed.

LISTEN HERE Colleen is an aboundingly inventive composer and artist. For two decades Cécile Schott, as Colleen, has crafted welcoming, enchanting, and bewildering music. The multiinstrumentalist and vocalist’s timeless compositions make use of carefully selected tools to mold memories into transcendent splendor. The Tunnel and the Clearing finds Schott at her most vulnerable and confident, invoking contemplative and swirling organ processed through analog electronics, steady drum machine syncopations and her distinctive voice. On an album centered on processing the complicated washes of emotion through tribulations and revelations Colleen presents a vision of breathless clarity. The Tunnel and the Clearing was developed over a period of transformative change. Colleen began work on the album in 2018 but was all but halted by extreme fatigue from a previously undiagnosed illness. Years of treatment and adjustment eventually led to relocating to Barcelona, soon followed by lockdowns and then the dissolution of her longtime partnership. Reflecting on these cumulative experiences she reimagined her compositional practices, spending months in near complete silence. Says Schott, “Never before had I felt so profoundly the power that music has, through harmony, melody, rhythm and sound itself, to express the whole range of human emotions.” The resulting seven pieces investigate the complex, at times contradictory relationship between excitement and fear, anger and understanding, struggle and triumph, all focused on a reconstruction of the self. Colleen’s albums are unified by distinct and personal instrumentation, built around music boxes, viola da gamba, or electronics, they somehow all remarkably share a dreamlike modern quality. For The Tunnel and the Clearing Schott restricted herself to using analog electronic instruments including the Elka Drummer One, the Roland RE-201 Space Echo and Moog Grandmother synth, coupled with Yamaha organ keyboard. Stunningly, Colleen achieves the rich emotional intricacy and the lush density of textures on The Tunnel and the Clearing through almost entirely live performance and processing. These detailed and affecting compositions mirror Colleen’s grappling with her own psyche. Schott elaborates “I found direct correspondences between my internal discourse, its obsessive, frantic attempts at making sense of what I could not understand, and the music I was making, with motifs functioning as questions and answers, doubts and assertions.” Clicks, hums, warbles and throbs emulating our evolving internal worlds, an “emotional noise.” A musical journey through the tunnel toward the clearing at its end. The Tunnel and the Clearing is a work of lucid reverence, a constellation of marvels suspended in air.

Composed of friends Evan Lewis, on lead guitar, and Tom Mcgreevy, on vocals and rhythm guitar, the band built a reputation in their hometown for their bright, sinewy, guitar sound while sharing bills with artists like Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever, Weyes Blood, The Goon Sax and Juan Wauters. The band initially released their debut EP under the name Ducks Unlimited, earning accolades from Pitchfork who praised the band’s “lilting, throwback jangle pop,” and acclaim from outlets like NPR, Paste, NME, Apple Music 1, and more. After signing to Carpark, the updated version of Get Bleak will be released with three additional bonus tracks, “Oblivion,” “As Big As All Outside,” and “It’s Easy.” The opening track, “Get Bleak” sets a thematic tone for the EP, one of cultural self-awareness and satiric critiques of society’s pressures and the often ridiculous demands – and prices we pay – to exist. Chiming with breezy indie guitar sounds akin to those of Flying Nun and Sarah Records acts, the track, that features a contribution from Laura Hermiston of Twist, pokes fun at the idea that moving from city to city will fix the problems in your life. Following suit is “Gleaming Spires”, a track that zeroes in on the cities we live in and the push-pull relationships that we so often share with them. “Anhedonia”, via it’s tightly-wound rhythm and nostalgia-inked guitars, shifts focus to the times when one is unable to wring any joy out of the things that they find important in life.
TRACKLISTING 1. Get Bleak 2. Gleaming Spires 3. Annie Forever 4. Anhedonia 5. Oblivion 6. As Big As All Outside 7. It’s Easy
Whereas the original tracks on the EP demonstrate the debut stylings of Ducks Ltd., the bonus tracks on the album serve as indications of their music to come later on Carpark Records. Bringing the band’s characteristic restless bounce, thoughtful lyricism and penchant for orchestration, the tracks explore topics like troubled friendships (“It’s Easy”), self-destructive desires (“Oblivion”), and living with decline (“As Big As All Outside”) while maintaining the balance of earnest selfreflection and humor that endeared audiences to the original release.

Black vinyl mini-album LP-DOCK-73B UPC 843190057344
Enclosures follows Craven Faults’ debut album Erratics & Unconformities. These 37 minutes of music are the start of the next journey. New terrain and more refined methods of travel. Dark clouds gathering. We’re out of the blocks quickly. German engineering carries us swiftly across the moors on a Saturday night rendezvous. Two almost identical mushroom shaped rocks are the destination. There’s evidence of previous rituals carried out. Two hours due north we go in search of the power source. Cascading. An experiment in performance over a fixed point. Tape loops recorded in 1967 at The Philadelphia College of Art. Woodwind purchased from a charity shop in Yeadon. The concept of work was forgotten. We’re back on the millstone grit of the Mid Craven Fault for an exercise in simplification. Familiar territory. Sometimes the theory isn’t all it’s cracked up to be, and there’s still power in hammering a single note over two chords – a lesson learnt from the American South in the late 40s and early 50s and boiled down in the late 60s. Olympic Sound Studios, April 1967. The Hit Factory, April 1969. On Erratics & Unconformities, Craven Faults often found a calm inner space in the vistas. Here the tensions of the early EPs return, with a focus on how human ‘progress’ has impacted and shaped the landscape. How the land was divided now shapes our present and future, and retracing that journey is particularly pertinent. cravenfaults.com facebook.com/CravenFaults @cravenfaults instagram.com/cravenfaults

FIVER – FIVER WITH THE ATLANTIC SCHOOL OF SPONTANEOUS COMPOSITION
LABEL: YOU’VE CHANGED RECORDS CATALOG: YC-049 FORMAT: LP/CD/Digital RELEASE DATE: Digital – May 7, 2021 // LP/CD – May 21, 2021
Simone Schmidt is a versatile and thorough craftsman — a distinct vocalist, guitarist, and wordsmith; a rigorous researcher, producer, and designer; a friend to many and enemy to some. Over the past 13 years and 7 full length records, Schmidt has largely rejected the logic of the music industry, employing many aliases in the course of creating a robust discography that engages various strains of North American folk and Country music, from Old Time to Psychedelic Country . In a totally unpredictable follow up to the historical fiction of Fiver’s Audible Songs From Rockwood (2017), Fiver with The Atlantic School of Spontaneous Composition wrangles the impulses of a new generation of improvisational musicians toward an unexpected reimagining of Country music and its possibilities.
Fiver with The Atlantic School of Spontaneous Composition --Yeah But Uhh Hey Leaning Hard (On My Peripheral Vision) June Like A Bug Jr. Wreck Sick Gladiola Death Is Only A Dream Paid In Pride For Your Sake (featuring Special Costello)
Throughout 2017-2018, Toronto-based Simone Schmidt (Fiver) travelled east to a small white house in Scotch Village in unceded Mi’kma’ki, to arrange the music with Bianca Palmer (drums, percussion), Nick Dourado (lap steel, piano, vibes, sax), and Jeremy Costello (synths, bass, voice). Known for their work with Beverly Glenn Copeland, the unit was dubbed the Atlantic School of Spontaneous Composition for their improvisational tendencies and geographic location. Indebted to Dourado and Palmer’s teacher, drummer Jerry Granelli (Vince Guaraldi trio) and the improvised music community of the Creative Music Workshop, theirs is a practice based in deep listening and presence in the moment. What better players to realize a set of songs concerned with the aggregate experiences that compose the now, the cycles of life and death, labour and political thought borne by the present condition? Throughout the 8 song album, Schmidt’s characters describe a world on the brink. They sing it into being through Country’s forms and tropes — some rendered intact, some tangential, and some pushed off the road to new historical ends. Dourado’s chops, Palmer’s voicing, and Costello’s dexterity ensure that the arrangements owe as much to Duke as they do to Deford. From beginning to end, Fiver and the Atlantic School of Spontaneous Composition remain open and adaptable to sound and natural gestures, graciously inviting us into the wonder of a gathering of people who are getting serious and having fun, who know how to listen to each other, listen together, and tap into the beauty emerging from shared space. The spokes catch the moonlight. Behind you, there’s nothing but a city you don’t know. Out in front, spreading out on either side of the inky blacktop, is the desert and the promise of a horizon. Here you’ll find the music of the 299. Out here, things get weird at the edges of the frame. Out here, you can lose your mind before finding it again. That’s what happened to Welsh multi-instrumentalist and producer Gavin Fitzjohn a couple of years ago. Making his way across the US—from Phoenix to Houston to Dallas to Tampa, out to New Orleans and way out in Joshua Tree—he sought the heart of the American troubadour: guitar for hire, and trouble just around the next bend. Bricked up in hotel rooms, he recorded the character sketches and scorched earth polemics that make up the first 299 record. Totally DIY, with bowls, plates and boxes as percussion, a quarter as a guitar pick and a fistful of coins for shakers, these songs shoot the day to day mundanity of touring full of colour, mainlining the everyday weirdness of Wim Wenders’ photography and the ominous proselytising of late era Johnny Cash. These songs are home to creeping death hangovers, not-so-idle threats and big plans that go sideways irrevocably. This overarching sense of Lynchian weirdness is offset by songs that ring with crisp melodies and compositional nous. Blue Island’s skipping groove is intoxicating, dangerous in its allure, while elsewhere there are flecks of ‘60s vocal groups and Tom Waits-style melancholia tied up in Fitzjohn’s deliberate American drawl. Since completing work on these tracks, Fitzjohn has continued to work as a musician and producer with artists including Paolo Nutini, Manic Street Preachers, Gruff Rhys, Stereophonics and more, but the 299 keeps calling out to him. The songs are always playing somewhere in the background; a product of a time and place that says something about him as a songwriter and something else about America as an intoxicating landscape that will destroy you if you let it. ELDEN - NOSTROMO Nostromo
DESCRIPTION Elden believes in the power of heavy metal riffs, melodic choruses and an all out head banging experience. Formed in 2012 in Karlstad, Sweden, the band started writing songs influenced by artists like Mastodon, Baroness, The Sword and classic bands from the 70´s and 80´s. Come 2015, Elden released their first EP and started touring across the country. Having built a small following of both local and international fans the band started developing their sound, taking their songwriting in an interesting direction – even heavier riffs, more distinct vocals and an overall more impressive production. Debut album “Death and Fear” hit the shelves in November 2016 and got fantastic reviews: After touring Sweden to support the latest album, Elden looked to perform outside their Nordic home. In the summer of 2018 the band got the opportunity to support Stoned Jesus in Zagreb, Croatia. TRACKLIST 1. Relapse 2. Sail & Saviour 3. Anubis 4. Fossilised 5. Heavy Rain 6. Nostromo 7. Creature Follows 8. The Passage
Having been picked up by critically acclaimed label Fuzzorama Records, Elden will release their new album “Nostromo” on the 24th of January 2020. Inspired by the cold darkness of time and space, these are by far the best songs the band have written.

TRC007LP

Double LP with gatefold sleeve. x500 bone vinyl with x100 randomly allocated gold vinyl. This LP is for Indie stores only. Fuzz Club Records are back with the seventh volume of their annual Reverb Conspiracy compilation. Likened to the 'Nuggets' compilations that document the kaleidoscopic sounds of the 60s, the Reverb Conspiracy series provides a snapshot of the contemporary international psych scene in all its multifaceted glory. Concerned with all things fuzz, reverb and drone, you'll find underground artists and familiar names. Vice once described the Reverb Conspiracy as "a catalyst for the European Psych Nouveau movement... sparking more creative chemistry than a night of speed dating at Andy Warhol's" but, as of volume six, Fuzz Club have now gone fully international. Like its predecessor, Volume 7 is a worldwide affair and all the better for it. From Australia, there's the hypnotic psych-surf of Chesta Hadron and driving krautrock jams courtesy of Mt. Mountain. Elsewhere, Mexico brings us a ten -minute motorik work-out from Sei Still and murky, reverb-soaked shoegaze from Lorelle Meets The Obsolete. Turning back to Europe, there is a whole heap of far-out sounds. France offers us electronic post-punk drones (Veik), gothic psych (Servo) and experimental electronica/Krautrock (Ashinoa). Representing Italy, there’s Kill Your Boyfriend’s psychedelic noise-rock and bludgeoning walls-of-sound from Rev Rev Rev. There's a piece of primal industrial psych via Germany's Flying Moon In Space and Austria’s Hypnotic Floor deliver a thrashing fuzz freak-out. Championing the UK, where Fuzz Club themselves are based, you'll find Autotelia's sprawling, minimalist soundscapes and dark, noisy post-punk from Mirna Way (who are based in London but originally hail from Poland.) 1) Chesta Hedron - Pulse, 2) Mt Mountain - Tassels, 3) Sei Still - Tacticas de Guerrilla Urbana, 4) Flying Moon In Space - Ardor, 5) Kill Your Boyfriend - Agave, 6) Veik - Difficult Machinery, 7) Lorelle Meets The Obsolete - La Maga, 8) Ashinoa - Koalibi, 9) Autotelia - Floating Island of the Gods, 10) Hypnotic Floor - Beinwärts, 11) Mirna Ray - Poziome Tornado, 12) Servo - Yajña, 13) Rev Rev Rev - Clutching The Blade
