This Issue: Jeanette Wall (US Label Manager) & Christof Ellinghaus (Label Founder)

to create a community around music – that has managed to run through the heart of the label for over 30 years.

We know you can’t choose, but what’s been your favorite label release, and why?

JW: This is a little bit of a copout, but when I went to the City Slang Berlin office for the first time, the first thing to catch my eye was a promotional poster on the wall for a compilation City Slang released in 1992, as a fundraiser for Planned Parenthood. The title is Freedom Of Choice (Yesterday’s New Wave Hits As Performed By Today’s Stars) — and the tracklist is unreal. Superchunk covering Devo, Chia Pet (the Sassy Magazine house band) covering The Human League, The Muffs covering John Fogerty. Sonic Youth covering Plastic Bertrand! It’s such a special slice of rock history that represents the underlying ethos of the label. I knew when I saw that poster, I was exactly where I was supposed to be.

What’s the wildest marketing promotion you’ve ever worked on for any release?

How did you personally get started in the music industry?

Jeanette Wall: At the risk of aging myself in the most cringe way possible, I got my start on MySpace when I was in high school. I managed my best friend’s solo project after our middle school band broke up. I connected him to enough people on the platform til he was the #1 unsigned artist streaming on MySpace (it was cool, I promise).

When and where did the label begin?

JW: Christof Ellinghaus, our fearless leader, founded the label whilst promoting shows and tour managing in Berlin. The imprint offered a European home to a number of influential indie bands from across the Atlantic. Releases included Yo La Tengo, Sebadoh, Cell, The Flaming Lips, and Hole to name a few. The records released through City Slang have helped shape and embellish the last three decades of alternative music.

What is the meaning behind the name for the label?

JW: The name is a reference to Fred “Sonic” Smith’s Rendezvous Band’s heater, “City Slang.” Christof has a copy of the 7” above his desk.

How has the label changed since it started?

JW: It’s been 33 years of City Slang! With offices in Berlin, New York, Paris and London, I think the biggest change is how far the label has outgrown the borders of the European continent. We’re everywhere, working with wonderful artists from everywhere, with good people from everywhere.

Describe the general makeup of your team at the label.

JW: The HQ is in Berlin, where the nucleus resides, with a handful of satellite offices that connect the dots. Berlin is where the production meets the product management, as they say. We have an amazing digital team, in-house licensing, German PR and our warehouse space in the Berlin office as well. There is Simon who heads up the UK office out of London City, and Aymeric who runs the French HQ out of Paris. Then there is the New York office, now, that’s where the PARTY is! Bianca and myself hold it down for the USA, alongside Local Rep, in Brooklyn.

What has been the biggest challenge for you and the label during the Pandemic?

Christof Ellinghaus: Well, we work with a lot of brand new artists, and when the pandemic hit, they were unable to strut their stuff. To show what they got. So this has been a real problem indeed, yes.

Is the label tied to a specific geographical area? How is this reflected in your releases?

JW: Berlin of course is at the heart of the unapologetic, raucous punk energy the folks who make up the label exude. But I think with such an international label, both in roster and staff, it’s difficult to pin down. Have you ever been to the Island of Misfit Toys? We’re serving that energy.

Where do you go to search for new music? Who or what has been a new find you’d like to rave about?

CE: We align the carefully researched data points from TikTok and Youtube as well as other socials, then draw our conclusions… Not. Somehow, weirdly, they keep finding us...

Is there a genre that you would consider to be the label’s “signature style,” or is it a mix?

JW: Absolutely a mix. I’ll borrow from the beautiful description on our website: The label’s roster now encompasses everything from imaginative twists on dance music (Caribou, Gold Panda, Boy Harsher, Waleed, Coma, Sinkane, Junior Boys, Roosevelt) to inventive instrumental productions (Hauschka, Grandbrothers) multiple forms of ingenious songwriting (José Gonzaléz, Son Lux, KAINA, McKinley Dixon, Anna B Savage) genre-bending masterpieces (Noga Erez, Zouj, Sen Morimoto, Lambchop) and of course the kind of raucous guitars with which it first launched (Los Bitchos, King Hannah, Pom Pom Squad, Sprints, Nada Surf, Calexico).

How would you describe your overall ambitions and goals as a label from when you first started compared to now?

CE: Well, back in the early days, we first and foremost wanted to be a home away from home for all these amazing US bands in Europe. That has obviously now shifted. We are now trying to be their global release partner and career builder all while we attempt

JW: There’s this German word our staff has been throwing around a lot, “die schnapsidee” — which basically means a wild idea, or an idea that comes about when drinking (“Schnapps”). We have a lot of those, I am not sure if one sticks out as the wildest. I will say, many of our schnapsideen come to fruition, or the ones worth remembering anyways. One of my favorites to witness was a live event City Slang hosted in Berlin with Sooper Records and Secretly where we brought together three artists who all share the same band and are deeply connected: Sen Morimoto, NNAMDÏ, KAINA all brought Chicago to this club sweet club that sits on the Spree, Marie-Antoinette. Here is to many more schnapsideen!

What is your stance on color vinyl? What’s the most unique color LP or overall packaging you’ve ever seen or released?

JW: Listen to what you want, how you want to listen to it. My favorite packaging trick City Slang pulled recently came from the mind of Softee. Jean Goode designed the packaging, and Nina thought to have the back of her LP be donned with a letter and a track by track, taking note from old school Decca records with lots to read and absorb on the jacket. Nina wanted the listener to really be able to connect with the music even when combing through the stacks at the record shop. It turned out beautifully.

How would you describe the average fan of the label?

JW: They throw impeccable dinner parties. Not necessarily the most lavish, but thoughtful and warm. They pick up their favorite natural wine, a new candle, and the stinkiest cheese from the grocery store. They plan out their vinyl playlist in advance, and make everything from scratch. Even if the food is simple, it’s the most delicious when shared around a table. The conversation goes late into the night, and usually involves a joyous debate about a mysterious sample hidden on one of the records. I think this is also the average person who is employed at the label (brag).

Before working at the label did you have any experience playing in bands or making music of your own?

JW: Shameless self promotion, but you can check out my band Band Practice. I once ate a bowl of fettuccini on stage at Silent Barn (RIP) while playing a set. We are on indefinite hiatus.

How important are issues like mental health and social justice to you and the label?

JW: Music is what connects us, how we communicate our desires, joys, needs, dreams, pain, suffering. This connection holds the hand of ensuring the well-being of our fellow humans. That empathy, that ability to see each other’s experiences reflected back at us, is the whole point of putting out music in the first place. So, similarly to the health of the Earth, the health of each other is equally essential to what we do.

What in your opinion has been the biggest change in the music industry from when you first started compared to now?

JW: Remember MySpace? Just kidding. I think the biggest change is essentially the barrier to entry. Maybe it was never really there at all, but we know now more than ever that anyone can press record and have their song up available for the world on a million different platforms. The myth of it being something only certain people can do has dissipated.

If you had to start a new sub-label, what would it be called and what kind of music would it be geared towards?

JW: I have always wanted to start a drag artist sub-label, and release beautiful 12” club mixes, like Gold Panda remixes Alaska 5000, featuring a McKinley Dixon verse. I think there are so many fun spaces where drag and indie music can connect. Just another excuse for Bianca and I to throw some amazing parties.

Want to shout out a personal favorite record store or retail establishment?

Now’s your chance:

JW: This is a tough one (I love you all!!!), but I really have to give this space to my hometown store, Luna Records in Indianapolis. I learned so much from those folks, and I still have the first record crate I ever got that has the Luna logo all over it. Whenever I see an order from them, teenage Jeanette is smiling like a maniac.

They say our sun will explode in about 5 billion years or so- how would you like the label to be remembered?

JW: I think folks will remember the dinner parties, those we hosted and those we soundtracked.

Charles Mingus Mingus

The Second Of Mingus’ Revered Candid Albums

Recorded With Mingus’ Greatest Sidemen, Eric Dolphy & Booker Ervin

Remastered from the original analogue tapes by Bernie Grundman

The recordings Charles Mingus made for Candid Records have become the stuff of legend The first time he was given complete creative freedom in the studio, Mingus took full advantage, pushing his band and himself to new heights while charting the path jazz would take over the next decade.

Mingus is the second of the albums produced during those sessions and stands proudly alongside Charles Mingus Presents Charles Mingus as an essential, immersive trip into Mingus’ singular genius. Out of print for nearly years, the revitalized Candid Records has gone back to the original art and the original master tape for a reissue arguably be er than any of the copies trading for hundreds online. Whether on -gram vinyl or CD, Bernie Grundman’s mastering brings Mingus back to life as fiercely as he must have been in New York’s Nola Penthouse Studios all those years ago

Quartet includes the great Roy Haynes (Monk, Miles, Coltrane), Charles Davis (Sun Ra, Archie Shepp), & John Ore (Sun Ra, Monk, Hank Mobley)

Remastered From The Original Analogue Tapes

Considered to be one of the absolute masters of the soprano saxophone alongside John Coltrane and Sydney Bechet, Steve Lacy’s career was one of constant reinvention and exploration. Don Ellis . . . How Time Passes

The Outstanding Debut From The Avant-Garde Composer & Trumpeter

Featuring Jazz Icons Ron Carter, Charlie Persip, & Jaki Byard

Remastered from the original analogue tapes by Bernie Grundman

At the time of this release, Down Beat Magazine predicted that Ellis could become the “most important brass soloist since Miles Davis” and awarded the International Jazz Critics Award for best New Star That excitement was rooted in Ellis as an artist who had gone from Glenn Miller’s band to the avant-garde scene beside Charles Mingus and Eric Dolphy, showing himself as a creative force who would no-doubt push jazz itself forward.

…How Time Passes made good on the promise Ellis showed, and stands as a landmark of “Third Stream Jazz,” which integrated music into the bold experimentation that defined the late ’50s and ’60s jazz scene Long out of print, Candid has finally restored the original art and recruited Bernie Grundman to bring the original master tapes back to life and put listeners back to the moment Ellis emerged as a singular artist who would go on to influence classical, and film music

Jazz heads, however, have known and revered Woods since he was first hailed as “the next Bird.” A veteran of Dizzy, Monk, Quincy Jones, and Oliver Nelson’s bands, by the time he stepped into the studio to lay down his Rites Of Swing, Woods was in full control of his art and his newly minted octet of top players

A tight, easy-to-dig set of hard bop with the sophistication of swing and subtle classical touches, Rites Of Swing is finally reissued in a fashion befi ing its legacy, with restored artwork and remastering by Bernie Grudman from the original session tapes.

JULY

Barsuk Records is pleased to release Charly Bliss’ beloved second album Young Enough on standard-weight black vinyl.

“Making Young Enough was the most fulfilling creative experience I’ve had thus far in my life,” said Charly Bliss’ Eva Hendricks upon the album’s release. “Not only because I’m proud of the songs that ended up on the record, but also because I’m proud of myself and my bandmates for putting in an obsessive amount of work into making sure the album would be the best it could be.”

Young Enough, Charly Bliss’ follow-up to their critically acclaimed debut Guppy, was embraced by critics and fans alike in a way that sophomore efforts often fall short.

Along with Eva, bassist Dan Shure, guitarist Spencer Fox and drummer Sam Hendricks are just finishing up another round of touring, both headlining and supporting Hippo Campus, including a show at the world-famous Red Rocks, before they return to the studio to finish their forthcoming new album.

CRITICAL ACCLAIM FOR YOUNG ENOUGH

"Charly Bliss’ triumphant new album Young Enough is an unflinching celebration of survival." - NME

"Eva Hendricks [is] one of the best rock songwriters working today" - Stereogum

“Young Enough is going to fully establish them as one of the best guitar groups in the world.” – The FADER

"[Charly Bliss]’s second record is bigger and darker, amplifying their ’80s new-wave sparkle into ecstatic triumph." - Pitchfork

“Can someone remind me why they aren’t the biggest rock band in the world yet?” – Jezebel

Guiding Hand

Original Release Date: July 21, 2023

The creative process can be a difficult one, especially for artists who are constantly questioning themselves and their work. Luc Bradford, better known as ford., has grappled with this issue while writing his third album, 'Guiding Hand.'

The title of the album, 'Guiding Hand,' is a symbolic visual representation of the unseen force that helped Luc Bradford, better known as ford., push through the various struggles that came throughout the writing experience. This force represents the collective human spirit, the gentle momentum of positivity that coaxes us forward when we feel we can't move at all. Luc drew on these influences throughout the creative process, using it to pull him through writer's block and moments of doubt. The hands on the album's cover art are a depiction of an actual sculpture that is of personal significance to Luc and his family, a mold of his mother and older brother’s hands which were taken before his passing in 2007. He has been and continues to be an unwavering inspiration to Luc in his music.

Overall, 'Guiding Hand' is a powerful testament to Luc's artistic vision and his journey to create music that is true to himself. It represents a triumph over doubt and anxiety and showcases the power of the human spirit to guide us through difficult times. For Luc, this album is more than just a collection of songs - it is a reflection of his growth as an artist and as a person

ford, age 23, has already released two full-length albums ‘(The) Evening’ (2018) & ‘The Color of Nothing’ (2020) (albums which have received over 100 million+ streams + thousands of physical vinyl sold), sold out headline shows and received a grammy nomination for his remix of Mild Minds’ 2020 single SWIM.

Often described as a more radio-friendly version of Lynyrd Skynyrd, the Atlanta Rhythm Section was one of a few Southern rock bands to hit the upper reaches of the charts during the '70s. Hailing from the small town of Doraville, Georgia, the formation of ARS can be traced to the remnants of two groups (The Candymen & The Classics IV). Local Hit Songwriter Buddy Buie, assembled the band which comprised singer Rodney Justo, guitarist Barry Bailey, bassist Paul Goddard, keyboardist Dean Daughtry, and drummer Robert Nix. After playing on several artists' recordings, it was decided to take the band a step further and make the group of players a real band, leading to the formation of the ARS. Disc One, features album Deep Cuts and previously Unreleased Studio Recordings. Disc Two features live performances of their Greatest Hits over the decades.

Offering up an endless supply of ascending guitar lines and catchy hooks of amphetamine-fueled power pop. With a 7” on CBS in the UK and a debut EP on US indie label 415 Records, the band rode the new wave.

This collection of out-of-print early singles and unreleased demos showcases why they made fans both in the US and UK.

THRILL JOCKEY

Pelican

The Fire In Our Throats Will Beckon The Thaw

Thrill - 558

Pelican and Thrill Jockey are proud to present a deluxe edition of the band’s acclaimed 2005 album The Fire In Our Throats Will Beckon The Thaw, newly remixed, remastered and featuring special bonus rarities including an early version of “Red Ran Amber,” (previously only available on a split with MONO) and demos of “Autumn Into Summer,” “Last Day of Winter” and “Sirius”. The Fire In Our Throats established Pelican as indisputable masters of their craft. Pelican’s ability to alchemize their influences into a sound so wholly original and then expand on that sound into a work of captivating beauty remains a marvel. The album indelibly shifted the paradigm of heavy music and the ripples of that shift can be heard in the countless bands who have risen to prominence since its release. The genre-busting nature of the album’s melodicism and refined dynamics was a harbinger of things to come in a genre whose strict boundaries were rapidly being shattered; a fact recognized and cemented by the album’s critical reception, which engendered everything from an Album of the Year nod from Decibel, to pontifications about Pelican representing a rising wave of intellectualism in metal from the New York Times. Nearly two decades since the album’s release on Hydra Head Records, The Fire In Our Throats has stood as not just one of the band’s most celebrated releases, but as a watershed work of avant-metal. The album arrives with a fresh mix by its original engineer Greg Norman and mastering by Josh Bonati, imbibing the songs with a new ferocity while also granting increased clarity, highlighting the developing interplay between each member. The refreshed mix brings an additional punch to the rhythm section of bassist Bryan Herweg and drummer Larry Herweg, bolstering the brightened melodicism and interlocking riffing between guitarists Trevor Shelley de Brauw and Laurent Schroeder-Lebec. The more articulate presentation of the album showcases the power of each individual player while buttressing Pelican’s distinct sound as a unified force.

-The Quietus

“The mixture of beauty and dread remains a defining feature of the band, as is its feel for dynamics”

-Chicago Tribune

“For almost twenty years, the Chicago-based foursome has hosted excursions into the beautiful, bone-rattling boundaries of instrumental post-metal. The band’s music is often as visceral as it is cerebral, but it’s still largely abstract and measured enough to skirt emotion rather than dive right in.” -NPR

On Jupiter, Brooklyn trio Upper Wilds voyage deeper into the cosmos, mapping out the overwhelming enormity of the universe in soaring hooks and blistering noise. The third installment in the trio’s exploration of our solar system looks to its largest planet for a daring exploration of scale and perspective. New York underground mainstay Dan Friel’s melodic gifts and wry lyricism are magnified and propelled ever outwards by the thundering rhythm section of bassist Jason Binnick and drummer Jeff Ottenbacher, all immersed in rippling fuzz. Just like its namesake, Jupiter stands as Upper Wilds most colossal offering in their catalog. The raw power of their music is amplified to titanic proportions, sky-clawing riffs invoking the sheer awe that the heavens inspire. More than any Upper Wilds album before it, Jupiter makes humanity’s endeavors in space exploration an inseparable part of its sonic DNA . Recorded with Travis Harrison at his studio Serious Business in Brooklyn (Guided By Voices, Dope Body, The Men), the trio’s live recordings are inspired by the Voyager Golden Record – a double LP launched with the 1977 Voyager probe spanning field recordings to compositions by J.S. Bach and Laurie Spiegel. While the Voyager Golden Record’s intended audience may have originally been the extra-terrestrial beings that might encounter the probe, Upper Wilds bring cosmosseeking sounds back to earth with a record made for and about humanity. Jupiter finds comfort in space’s unending expanse. Far from feeling defeated by the smallness of our existence in the face of an uncaring universe and ever-expanding infinite, Upper Wilds capture the power of creativity to extend our lifespans far beyond our limited time on earth.

““Love Song #5”... comes on as a whirlwind. As [Dan Friel] sings about how love changes nothing and everything at once, a stereo blitz of distorted strumming, whizzing arpeggios and screaming sustained tones insists how much it matters.” -The New York Times

“A continuous barrage of bass and drums, knocking [guitarist Dan Friel’s] inimitable fuzz-crusted hooks sideways and to pieces and rampaging on regardless.”

-Dusted Magazine

The Innocent Voyage * Restless Melancholy * Hallucinations * Amor Fati * A Childhood Memory

Julian Lage and Gyan Riley are two of new music’s most accomplished guitar virtuosos and their duo performances are transcendent experiences filled with meticulous detail and telepathic interplay. Here they perform a dramatic book of music inspired by the haunting and enigmatic novel A High Wind in Jamaica—the story of a group of children that gets mixed up with pirates—the twist being the children turn out to be even more dangerous than the pirates. A precursor to The Lord of the Flies, it is considered one of the best English novels ever written. Filled with ominous mystery and a dangerous innocence, Quatrain is another beautiful project from the pen of alchemist John Zorn.

SLW cc Watt PURPLE PIE PLOW

STREET DATE: JULY 21, 2022

Locke Ward, an ambitious Iowa native, has written and recorded well over 1,000 songs and put out 60 self-released albums since the early millennium with vivid titles like Sacrilege, Treason, Treachery & Thyme that encompass rock, folk, country and world music, all with inventive DIY flair. Earlier this year, Locke Ward coupled with Kill Rock Stars for an acclaimed Jad Fair (Half Japanese) collaboration, "Happy Hearts." Locke Ward also did the artwork for the new SLW cc Watt album (as he did for the previous albums).

As any indie/punk fan should know, Watt co-founded the seminal San Pedro crew Minutemen in 1980. After bandmate D. Boon’s tragic 1985 death, Watt formed fIREHOSE and later Secondmen and Missingmen, released 3 punk operas and collaborated with the Stooges, Sonic Youth, Porno for Pyros, Juliana Hatfield J. Mascis, Tav Falco, Flipper, Nels Cline, Mike Baggetta, Jim Keltner and Kelly Clarkson. His long-term project DOS, with ex-Black Flag bassist Kira, recorded Justamente Tres (1996) for Kill Rock Stars.

SLW cc Watt is an inspired collaboration between prolific singer/songwriter/illustrator Samuel Locke Ward and SoCal punk legend bassist/singer Mike Watt. After the head-spinning fun of 2021's Let's Build a Logjam and 2022's Real Manic Time, on the new Purple Pie Plow, the duo corral guests throughout the record: saxophonist Bob Bucko Jr, along with drummer Dean Clean, and guitarist Joe Jack Talcum from the sardonic punk band The Dead Milkmen.

Packing in 24 tracks in 40 minutes, the new SLW cc Watt album has 11 brief poetic 'spiels' (voiced by Watt) alternating between 12 charming short songs (sung by Locke Ward, backed by Watt, Bucko, Talcum, Clean). The collaboration happened via the Internet, with Locke Ward sending lyrics to Watt and demo song tracks to everyone to layer on their own parts.

Purple Pie Plow, inspired by T. Rex’s unique mix of glam & psychedelia, does stylized takes on heavy subject matter. We’re led on a journey through mob rule (haunting ‘50’s-style ballad “A Face in the Crowd,” the ultra-catchy “Help Me,” the Motown swing of “Pray”), frightening fascism (New Orleans-flavored “Boring Out,” doo-wop styling “Boots March,” cow-punk “Lost To Time”) and ecological horrors (free jazz freakout “Flowers Scream,” power ballad “Toxic Sunrise”). Not to fear though as rising above the doom comes into play (acoustic/psych ballad “Children of the Stars,” lonesome folk “Dragon Steed,” noir jazz “Weeds of Your Dreams”).

Locke Ward and Watt hit it off so well that a 4th album is in the works. Listen to Purple Pie Plow and you’ll hear why they’re right to keep working together and wonder what they’ll come up with next.

Michael Krassner found himself in the desert. Though his long running instrumental collective Boxhead Ensemble began in Los Angeles and cut its teeth on the Chicago improv/art rock scene of the late ‘90s and 2000s, the forthcoming double album Ancient Music is rooted deeply in the Sonoran Desert, where Krassner lives the unassuming life of a restaurateur and has raised his family. In its arid washes of sound and dirt under foot sonic surrealism—reminiscent of Brian Eno, Roger Eno, and Daniel Lanois’s Apollos: Atmospheres and Soundtracks, William Basinski disintegrating a Morricone score, or even the sand dune new age of Kevin Braheny Fortune, Michael Stearns, and Steve Roach’s Desert Solitaire—you hear the sound of growth at its own, natural pace. Slowly assembled over the course of more than 20 years, it’s a defining statement from the Boxhead collective, overseen by an artisan craftsmen who has carefully burnished its sounds down to the geologic essentials.

“The early days reflected the grittiness of that city,” Krassner says of Boxhead’s start, when characters like Jim O’Rourke, Jeff Parker, Edith Frost, Fred Lonberg-Holm, Bonnie “Prince” Billy, Doug McCombs (Brokeback, Tortoise), Scott Tuma (Sold American), Ken Vandermark, Dirty Three members Mick Turner and Jim White, and a pre-Wilco Glen Kotche (not to mention Mr. Wilco himself, Jeff Tweedy) appeared on Krassner’s early soundtrack recordings for director Braden King and Laura Moya. But when Krassner decamped to the heart of Phoenix, Arizona, a metropolitan sprawl in the heart of the desert, where his music began to take on a different tone, informed by the luminous quality of Southwestern light he found out west. “There’s something in the light out here,” he says.

Working with longtime collaborators like Tim Rutili of Califone, Wil Hendricks, Jakob Koller, Robin Vining, Keith Kelly on woodwinds, Joshua Hill, and Laraine Kaizer-Viazovtsev, Krassner oversaw sessions between 2001-2021 in Los Angeles and Finland, but primarily worked on the album in the 7-Track Shack, a small studio space behind his family’s home. Uniting chamber music stillness with rangy, naturalistic ambient country tones, Krassner and his collaborators reflect the vast unknowability of the desert, a place renowned for its beauty but also its deadliness.

ONE OF THE “10 ESSENTIAL ALBUMS OF 2004”

- AP

DOUBLE LP

LIMITED EDITION PRESSING OF 1,000 ON GOLD

Originally released in August of 2004, Album Of The Year brings all that is the sound of The Good Life to fruition: catchy, moody pop/rock that uctuates between the all-ages club and the smoky cabaret, right alongside sing-along crescendos that spin into cinematic bursts. It also proved to be The Good Life's most critically acclaimed album to date. Pitchfork gave it an 8.0, while AP called it one of the 10 essential albums of 2004.

In Album Of The Year every song has a plan, going to a place that will inevitably involve leaving, being left, or leaving in anticipation of being left. Tim Kasher's ability to cleverly turn an innocuous phrase into a malicious slur of ill will leaves you not knowing whether to laugh or cry, all while giving you the distinct impression that you'll be quoting him at some point down the road.

“THE PERCUSSIVE, STRIPPED DOWN INDIE-FOLK TRIO PLAYS ACOUSTIC EVERYTHING, BUT THERE’S NOTHING QUIET ABOUT THEM...EVERY ONE OF THOSE SONGS JUST GOES FOR IT, IN A RACING-TOWARD-THE-SUN KIND OF WAY” -PITCHFORK

THIS CELEBRATED ALBUM ORIGINALLY RELEASED IN JULY OF 2009 IS BACK ON VINYL

LIMITED EDITION PRESSING OF 500 ON OPAQUE GOLD VINYL

The Rural Alberta Advantage was born out of singer/songwriter Nils Edenlo 's exodus from the province that inspired the band's name and many of the songs from their enthralling debut album, Hometowns. Edenlo grappled with homesickness after his move from Edmonton, Alberta to Toronto, Ontario in 2003. To cope with his loneliness and isolation in the 'big city', the shy songwriter penned a series of odes to his former home, celebrating the country's wild rose, the purple skies and the "Deathbridge in Lethbridge."

Edenlo recruited drummer Paul Banwatt (whom Edenlo met when they co-hosted an open mic night at a local bar) and multi-instrumentalist Amy Cole to complete the current three piece lineup.

RING VAN MÖBIUS

Title: Commissioned Works Pt II - Six Drops of Poison

Label: APOLLON RECORDS PROG

Genre:

OVERVIEW:

In the spring of 2021, Ring van Möbius was approached by performer and choreographer Harald Beharie to write the music for his next solo performance. This honorable task started a collaborative process in volving various artists with different artistic expressions, culminating in January 2022 with the premiere of “Batty Bwoy” in Dansens Hus in Oslo, Norway. The project was soon nominated for the Norwegian Critics Association Prize 2022.

“This album, however, is not the actual soundtrack for the finalized commissioned work itself, rather a reflection of the early visions; spontaneous reactions and a starting point for further collaboration” according to the band, “Being an independent body of work based on our early initial musical ideas, this can be referred to as loosely inspired by, but not limited to, the original concept by Harald Beharie.”

A demo recording was soon produced; a recording of said initial ideas, which became a point of reference, taking the material in a certain direction, but also the starting point for this album, taking it in another direction, further developed solely by Ring van Möbius. Hence, emerging from a common musical source material came three simila r but different works. Firstly, the demo recordings, secondly the musical outcome of this commissioned work, and thirdly this very album. This is the fully developed Ring van Möbius version, this is “C ommissioned Works pt II: Six Drops Of Poison”

Since 2013 she has released five albums Clarke and the Himselfs (Curly Cassettes, 2013), Clarke and the Himselfs II (HIB, 2014), The Well-Rounded Clarke and the Himselfs (Scavenger Cult, 2015), Clarke and the Himselfs and Friends (SC, 2016), In Your Heart you Know She's Clarke and the Himselfs (CC, 2017) Throughout this time she's been touring nationally and internationally Daytrotter and Paste Magazine listed C&TH as #1 for Rock and Roll and #4 for in general for their best of 2017 list. Throw on your platform boots and stomp along to the latest 7’ double A-side vinyl single and digital release of “Rock N Roller” and “Rock N Roll Angel” out on Curation Records in May 2023! It’s pure bubble glam crunch rock madness!

Hammered Satin is a glam rock band from Los Angeles California established in late 2010. Stylistically pulling from what is now known as Junkshop Glam from the 1970’s. In other words, they aspire to sound not like David Bowie himself but more like the hitless wonder wanna-be Bowie’s, Bolans, Quatro’s, Sweets, Muds ect ad nauseam. There are also punk or ‘Proto Punk” and Bubblegum elements to Hammered Satin’s music that seemingly goes under the radar.

The current 2023 lineup includes the three founding members. Noah Wallace lead vocals (formerly of Teachers’s Pet, S’cool Girls), Dan Sandvick Bass, Conor Berhle guitar, and glampa Don Bolles drums, vocals (formerly of The Germs, Celebrity Skin, 45 Grave among many others).

To date Hammered Satin have released two albums, four two song 7” singles, and four digital-only singles. Their music has made it onto a few TV shows such as Showtimes ‘Dice”, and Netflix’s cartoon Mr. Peabody and Sherman. The band has even managed to garner press in Rolling Stone magazine more than once which is unheard of for an underground band. Other noteworthy moments were direct support slots for The Ark in Sweden and The Black Crowes in Las Vegas.

‘Behavioural Sink Delirium ’ is the new studio album from MADMADMAD. Powered by their wild live parties and rooted in the sounds of mutant disco, post-punk and experimental electronics, the London -based trio’s third LP is due out July 21 via Bad Vibrations. Arriving following 2019’s ‘Proper Music’ and 2020’s ‘More More More’, ‘Behavioural Sink Delirium ’ was recorded and produced by Eddie Stevens (Zero7, Moloko, Róisín Murphy) in his Fulham studio. “We locked ourselves away for ten days and recorded 30 hours of music, all played live in one room, and only edited to create arrangements”, MADMADMAD recall. The result of those sessions is nine unhinged techno -dystopian freakouts that mark the trio out as a truly singular group.

‘Behavioural Sink Delirium ’ takes its name and inspiration from the 1968 -70 ‘Universe 25’ experiment by American ethologist John B. Calhoun, looking at the behavioural effects of population growth in a ‘rodent utopia’. During the studies, a perfect space was built for a colony of 3,000 mice to thrive in, with constant food and water supplies, cosy apartments and no outside threats or predators. Starting with 4 females and 4 males, the population grew rapidly before capping at a number of 2,200. At this point, a living nightmare ensued, filled with antisocial and violent mice as the utopic conditions began to collapse.

The mice formed violent cliques and social hierarchies, cannibalism started becoming common practice and the population started plummeting to eventual extinction. Calhoun coined this tipping -point the “behavioural sink ” effect, and it’s this state of societal breakdown that the trio tap into on the record. “You can easily see the link with our species in terms of overpopulation, but also with the Internet medium or ‘metaverse’ and its overproduction of data, causing tremendous societal, mental and environmental shifts. What was supposed to cater for most of our needs has also turned on us. Delirium kinda states the air of it all, and the folly of the music. ”

The second album by underground rock-and-beyond shapeshifters The Holy Family follows up the British group’s widely praised self-titled debut from 2021 and – says foundational member David Jason Smith –“is based on a hypothetical theory that there is no such thing as ‘the future’. We are continually moving forward into our past until we arrive at our birth – creation – the Tree Of Knowledge… or ‘Going Zero’, as I’ve termed it.”

It figures, then, that over some 40 minutes the five musicians conjure a sound that exhibits an affinity with great experimental totems down the ages, in a manner that ’s avowedly forward-facing and stamped with their own identity.

Though The Holy Family’s musical inspirations are multitudinous, and rarely if ever obvious, the lyrics nod to a distinct literary source – namely ‘Vorrh’, the trilogy of fantasy novels by cult British author Brian Catling, who died in 2022 while ‘Go Zero’ was being assembled. In these books, the Vorrh is “an impenetrable sentient forest, older than mankind, believed to house all knowledge” – and in the same way that the name The Holy Family references an Angela Carter work, Smith explains, “the track titles ‘Chalky’s Eyes’ (had been eaten by flies) and ‘The Watcher’ are direct references to characters in the book.”

With ‘Go Zero’, The Holy Family have returned with an album that unfurls elegantly, even while big time discombobulation is occurring.

Linley Hamilton Ginger's Hollow

Linley Hamilton's legendary hospitality has been enjoyed by a growing cohort of international jazz musicians whenever they visit at his Magy's Farm venue-cum-homestead deep in his native Ulster within sight of the mountains of Morne

His tireless efforts as a promoter, radio host, educator and all round champion of the music are so effective that his main gig as a trumpeter and composer is sometimes overlooked. Ginger's Hollow places Linley the musician back in the spotlight where he belongs, at the helm of a transatlantic team to present an album of pure musical good vibes.

Under his leadership, Dublin-based pianist/ composer Cian Boylan and first-call session saxophonist Derek 'Doc' O'Connorare reunited with US legends Adam Nussbaum on drums and Pat Metheny/ Gil Evans sideman Mark Egan on bass, and the mutual respect and sheer good fellowship that they share comes through loud and clear in this set of original tunes with the emphasis on openness, accessibility and positivity.

‘Love Hallucination’ is the sound of an artist in bloom , an album of big emotions and big songs, with direct , personal lyrics, such as the upbeat but panicked opener 'Don't Leave Me Now' and the 2-step drama of 'Midnight Ontario', or 'Limbo', an ear worm disco stomper about produced wi th Marco 'Tensnake' Niermeski.

Also featured as co-producers are David Kennedy (Pearson Sound), adding slick arrangements for the club , long-time collaborator Jeremy Greenspan (Junior Boys), and Paul White.

Air Miami me. me. me. Deluxe Edition

90’s 4AD band Air Miami’s debut album gets a long overdue repress on July 28th 2023.

Born from the ashes of celebrated D.C. band Unrest, Air Miami are the duo of Bridget Cross and Mark Robinson

A transatlantic joint production between record label’s 4AD and Mark’s own Teenbeat, their debut album me. me. me. has grown something of a cult status since its release back in 1995.

Produced by Guy Fixsen (The Breeders, My Bloody Valentine, Stereolab), it was recorded at the famed Criteria Studios in Miami, FL, and mixed in London with Lush recording their final album, Lovelife, in the studio next door.

Remastered from their original analogue tapes by Pete Weiss, this new deluxe edition pulls together all the album session tracks for the first time, spreading 16 tracks (3 new to the album) over two LPs. Pressed on Floridian-inspired aqua and orange vinyl and cut at 45rpm, the package is completed with a new gatefold sleeve design with Hideaki Kodama’s stunning ‘Girl B 1988’ photo still adorning the cover.

A limited pressing, this is likely to sell out quickly.

MR. SCRUFF - TROUSER JAZZ (DELUXE 20TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION)

Release Date: July 28th, 2023

Mr Scruff will release a special 20th anniversary edition of his classic album “Trouser Jazz” on Friday 28th July via Ninja Tune. The deluxe 2LP features blue / red vinyl discs, iconic artwork by Mr. Scruff himself alongside Airside and boasts an infinity peelable trouser sticker on the cover to reveal silver and gold foiled 20th anniversary trousers.

As a DJ, Andy Carthy aka Mr. Scruff plays across the board, flitting between soul, funk, hip hop, jazz, reggae, latin, african, ska, disco, house, funk, breaks, soundtracks and loads more. As a producer he makes music that draws on these influences, with a large dose of cheek and good humour. His cartoon drawings illustrate gig flyers, posters, record sleeves, t-shirts and usually accompany him at gigs as live animated visuals.

Originally released in 2002, “Trouser Jazz” was the hotly anticipated follow-up to the Manchester-based DJ, producer, record collector and cartoonist’s barnstorming debut “Keep it Unreal” (1999). “Trouser Jazz” neatly encapsulated Scruff’s ethos, his joie de vivre and his inimitable combination of tight knit funk, expansive sonics and dancefloor dynamite. Recorded largely at his home studio, it featured collaborations with UK rapper Braintax (founder of the cult British hip-hop label Low Life); Homelife’s octave defying Seaming To, Niko and bassist Sneaky (both Mancunians and affiliated with the highly respected Grand Central imprint). Everyone including Pitchfork delighted in the record’s joyful eclecticism: “Trouser Jazz is quite possibly the answer to all of your sugar-fueled Saturday morning disco prayers, churning out one chocolate-frosted cereal box prize after another and bringing down the house with an inspired mix of rubbery funk, hipster soul and gleefully contorted, krush groovin' hip-hop.”

“Sounds and voices constantly get warped while splashes of synthesizer splatter across songs, adding tension to otherwise pretty creations, like the tempo-flipping jaunt “Curve and Light,” and making the finale of autumnal slow-burn “Ahhhh, These Chains!”—a number starting with calming bell chimes and vocal harmonies that gradually blur together before eventually giving way to blasts of guitar—hit all the harder.” -Bandcamp, on Crumbling

“Serious Elephant 6 psych-pop vibes, but warped to another reality.” -NPR, on Crumbling

“Melodies burst into the sky then fizzle out in the dark like a dying firework. Leaving behind an awareness that something once occupied the space you now feel. You can sense it. Indulging that resonance, the wider understanding of dynamics, gives Crumbling an incredible sense of depth. It’s as much about the space around the sound as the sound itself, the awareness of that is what sets it apart.”

The pre-cursor to Mid-Air Thief's cult-acclaimed album Crumbling, Gongjoon Doduk exhibits a distinct universality, merging disparate sounds and styles into a cohesive, electronic-infused folk amalgam that tactfully blurs the lines between organic and synthetic. Listeners are led through enrapturing passages of swirling melodies underscored with eloquent plucks, strums, and bursts of bubbly glitches. Individual phrases drift into one another as if in a dream, cohered by entrancing hooks and vocal soundscapes. Gongjoon Doduk is a compelling accomplishment of both composition and production, bending as it does to its unique contours of consonance and dissonance, always resolving to a place of calm and beauty.

OVERVIEW

Out of pain comes inspiration, out of inspiration comes adventure, and out of adventure comes Georgia’s dynamite third studio album, Euphoric.

Having written her last two albums within a three-meter radius of her bedroom, it was important for Georgia to find a new physical and emotional space in which to write. After 10 years of being her own main collaborator, a crucial part of the writing process was learning to relinquish control and let go of the established techniques she worked by. Sometimes, the biggest adventures can start small, and for Georgia it was a DM from esteemed producer Rostam (Vampire Weekend, Haim, Carly Rae Jepsen, Clairo).

Georgia and Rostam became obsessed with creating simple pop songs that were only made up of maybe four or five parts but sounded immediate and emotive. Euphoric is the sound of life and of living in the now rather than escaping. It’s the sound of love and adventure. There is a heartbeat heard in every song, a vibrating energy that takes us through a boundaryless audio map of Georgia’s journey: 10 little explorations, 10 lessons learned, 10 steps towards health, happiness, freedom, and euphoria.

SELLING POINTS

• Georgia's recent collaborations include Shania Twain, Mura Masa, Gorillaz, Shygirl, Baby Tate, Dan Carey and David Jackson, to remixes including Jessie Ware, Metronomy, Declan McKenna and Dodie, and Olly Alexander (Years and Years).

NICK LOWE DIG MY MOOD (25th Anniversary)

LP STREET DATE: JULY 28, 2023

Nick Lowe’s 1998 album Dig My Mood marked the second masterpiece of his “worldly balladeer” and “elder statesman of rock and roll” chapter of his career, leaving the ironic power popper persona of his Jesus of Cool days far behind. Following 1994’s critically-acclaimed The Impossible Bird, Lowe found himself writing about love and hardship through a sophisticated lens, including celebrated staples of the Nick Lowe canon such as “You Inspire Me” and “Man That I’ve Become,” both fixtures of Nick’s setlists a quarter-century later. Featuring Lowe’s razorsharp songwriting and a selection of tasteful covers that Nick breathes new life into (Henry McCullough’s “Failed Christian” and Ivory Joe Hunter’s “Cold Grey Light of Dawn’’), Dig My Mood is another masterclass example of Lowe’s strength as a composer and performer. The album received immediate praise from music critics, with No Depression declaring that “Lowe has never sounded better.” Dig My Mood became the middle entry in the widely-celebrated Brentford Trilogy of albums that Nick Lowe released between 1994 and 2001.

For Dig My Mood’s 25th anniversary, the album is being pressed on color vinyl for the first time, with the studio album pressed on blue vinyl and a bonus EP (full of live performances from the Dig My Mood tour in Japan and a studio rare track) pressed on yellow vinyl. This 25th anniversary reissue of Dig My Mood is limited to 1,500 copies worldwide and the studio album is remastered for vinyl from the original tapes.

MADELINE KENNEY A NEW REALITY MIND

In the quiet surrounding the pandemic, Madeline Kenney made sonic sketches in the basement studio she shared with her then-partner. She arranged phrases that called her—the sharp knife of a synth cutting a path along a blooming arpeggio, drums stuttering firm and tight. Working this way, she amassed a collection of songs she had no particular aims for. Some formed her 2021 EP Summer Quarter, others languished.

But in 2022, Kenney’s partner left suddenly and without warning, plunging her into the solitary act of untangling what happened. In the wake of her ensuing depression, she revisited these songs and found in them something prescient. She’d already laid the foundation for A New Reality Mind.

That her relationship’s end came without warning is only half true, though. The warnings were in the feelings and fears that inspired Kenney’s critically-acclaimed third album, Sucker’s Lunch (2020), which was co-produced by Jenn Wasner (Flock of Dimes) and centered around the idea of flinging oneself freely into the seemingly-assured destruction of new love, come what may.

If sonically Sucker’s Lunch was letting yourself be pulled into the warm bath of a good story, A New Reality Mind reflects the harsh light of truth coming to break the spell. But as sobering as morning light can be, there’s brilliance to it, too. To see in the clarity of day is a gift. A revolution. Rather than reckoning with love lost, the songs on A New Reality Mind grapple with the self that chose to fall.

Notions of sight and vision pervade the record, as Kenney stands before the infinity mirror of selves she’s been to preserve bonds in her life. “I, like everyone else, am muddling through my most ordinary disaster of a life,” she acknowledges, a sentiment which reverberates through album opener “Plain Boring Disaster.” “I don’t need to start again,” she sings at the song’s close. “But I can change when it ends.” We may all be doomed to repetitive, ordinary heartbreaks, Kenney realizes, but at least we can cultivate a capacity to witness our missteps and build new realities for ourselves.

This is Kenney’s most expansive work, while also her most solitary. Produced and recorded alone in her basement, these songs are manifestations of what it feels like to be transformed by pain. But in the propulsive power of A New Reality Mind, there’s also acceptance, self-forgiveness, and a willingness to move forward into life, with all its ways of making a sucker of you.

We have here three musicians with such a rich shared history that they might as well share the same blood. Each an accomplished solo artist in their own right, there’s a vibrant track record of collaborative work as well, with others and among themselves. The Gunn-Truscinski Duo has been a formal going concern for nearly a decade and a half, producing a fabulous string of albums for this label. Truscinski and Nace, along with Jake Meginksy, make up xo4, a group dating back to the early days of this century. All three, with the addition of Kim Gordon, appeared on a record documenting their live scoring of Andy Warhol’s film Kiss

And so on Glass Band, the record at hand, they just fall in together. It’s a seamless grouping, so much so that, despite the distinct instrumentation, it’s somehow hard at times to tell who’s doing what. This is true all the way down to the LP sleeve, which features Nace’s artwork adorned with Gunn’s familiar handwriting. There is no leader, there are no accompanists; we encounter highly developed musical intellects melding in such a refined way as to dispose entirely with expectations in order to get right down to the crucial business of creation.

“Entrance” heralds the opening of the record with a battle-at-misty-dawn urgency. From a storm of swirling electric strings and drums, our warriors emerge on horseback, swords drawn. It’s an iridescent reminder of just how instantly elevated one can feel encountering the music of these players. The track is, in its way, a beautiful fake-out, since what follows isn’t a cavernous yawp of dramatic bombast, but rather a series of cinematic set pieces. It’s closer in atmosphere to Eno’s On Land than a Velvet Underground bootleg. “On Lamp” and “Tape” work acoustic guitars, malleted drums, echoes, and alien radio transmissions into soundtracks for windswept desert sunsets, swinging from the abstract to the rhythmic if you close your eyes you might see a Brion Gysin painting on the inside of your lids.

The first side ends with “Venus.” If you told me this was a field recording from that planet, I’d believe you, and if you told me this was a sonic transcript of the inner life of the Roman deity, that would seem just as plausible. Gunn and Nace sound like swaying trees in a centuries-long ice storm, while Truscinski’s cymbals sing the songs of frozen sailors. Flip it over and “Corner Dogs” treats you to a usage of a tape loop that’s as thrilling and disorienting as anything this side of This Heat or The Fall. Rapunzel’s hair turns to dust in your fingers, and if you try to speak the words just crackle and decay.

Lest the listener settle into the rhythm of these shorter song-length works, “Fencer” arrives, wherein our glass bandits gaze skyward at gathering storm clouds, throw their wristwatches to the dirt below, and cross the Rubicon. Exploring the ecstatic membrane between tension and release, the drums eddy and pound at all the right moments, stomping through the tempestuous haze of the strings. It’s a colossal 11 minutes.

“Sacked” is a subtle, vulnerable negotiation between the players, and just when it seems like it might be possible to get a handle on the emotional landscape, it leaves. The piece and the LP are gone. And since a mere LP leaves one wanting more, the inclusion of a 7” is an inspired move. That small disc features “Junctions,” a gorgeous wash of percussive overtone saturation and detached clanging, and “Noctiluca,” a hovering, metallic grotto.

What a pleasure to be able to shake one’s head and chuckle at the futility of trying to saddle this art with a genre. What a joy to acknowledge that it’s impossible to say what kind of music this is. It reminds me not of other records on my sagging shelves, but of moods and places, of memories from long ago and memories not yet made. Even for those intimately familiar with the output of these three, Glass Band delivers the delight of surprise. Something new. Imagine that.

MINI-COMPILATION OF NIGERIAN PIONEER AYO MANUEL’S BEST WORK

OVERVIEW:

Soundway Records presents Ayo Manuel ‘1983-1990’, a collection of selected works by one of Nigeria’s DIY pioneers.

This mini compilation selects the stand out cuts from his two albums Love Candidate and Party Time, showcasing the evolution of Ayo’s music. Side A is led by Song Of Love (Instrumental) - mid-tempo, synth-heavy music toeing the line between lo-fi crunch and sophisticated charm. This is followed closely by afro-disco melters Don’t Stop and the aptly titled Fun Time. Both with strong American, disco-funk leanings but full of Nigerian flavour, they come signed, sealed and delivered for any discerning dancefloor.

Sojourn (Ajo) lights up side-B, a coming-of-age journey that sets the tone for the rest of the album. With slick US production, but with its feet firmly planted in Yoruba culture, we find a more developed artist combining talking drums with distinct ’90s production, that deliver a unique blend of afro-pop. Gboro Mi Ro echoes the influence of Nigeria’s biggest musical export, Fela Kuti, but still retains its own particular character. Do Good follows in the footsteps of its predecessors but with added drama and depth.

SPIRITUAL JAZZ FROM SOME OF NEW ZEALAND’S BRIGHTEST STARS

OVERVIEW:

Following heavy radio play, New Zealand collective The Circling Sun releases the Spirits LP in a standard sleeve, following the initial limited edition run which flew off shelves.

Channeling spiritual/modal jazz and Latin rhythms, they simultaneously reference the greats such as Sun Ra, Pharoah Sanders and Alice Coltrane, while maintaining a fresh perspective on ensemble dynamics.

Perhaps the group’s name is no coincidence - each instrument seems to be in orbit around the concept of symbiotic synergy - and everyone is given equal space to shine; from a psychedelic Korg, to a delirious saxophone or the gentle ripples of a harp. There’s a huge array of keyboards, skillfully manned by the likes of Guy Harrison and Cory Champion (Clear Path Ensemble), with a standout acoustic piano solo by Harrison on “Plume”.

Not to be outshone, the wind section delivers ecstatic saxophone riffs, fluttering flutes and solid horn choruses throughout. Meanwhile, providing vital foundational support are the percussion (Soundway alumnus Julien Dyne), vibraphone, acoustic bass and full choir arranged by Matt Hunter.

“Name checking Sun Ra, Pharoah Sanders and Alice Coltrane, The Circling Sun is collective murderer’s row of New Zealand jazz luminaries crafting modal/spiritual jazz.” Aquarium Drunkard

“The vocal, trilling flute lines, the afro-cuban piano stabs, those scuttling rhythms, sci -fi synths, the choral highs and sighs, all blend to give ‘Kohan’ a cosmic jazz to high pop fluidity.” Backseat Mafia

“Brilliant from start to finish, Spirits is an impressive debut and will certainly have you on an astral trip through the cosmos. Definitely a strong candidate for record of the year!” Beat Caffeine

Sultan Stevenson

Faithful One

Pianist Sultan Stevenson is one of the fastest emerging young artists on the London jazz scene and his trio is already established as an outfit to catch when billed to play live and is being tipped for success on national and international stages .

'Faithful One' features Sultan's band with Jacob Gryn (double bass), Joel Waters (drums), Josh Short (trumpet) and special guest Denys Baptiste on tenor saxophone.

His approach to composition and playing has already been compared to that of McCoy Tyner and Esbjörn Svensson and, over the past year, his trio has played standout gigs at Jazz re:freshed, the Vortex and the Jazz Café where the band opened for the great Billy Cobham. Their Pizza Express gig during the EFG London Jazz Festival was a sell-out.

When Velocity Girl finally ended in 1997, Sarah Shannon was still eager to make music. In 1998, she recorded a demo with Geoff Turner (Gray Matter, Three) and Adam Wade (Jawbox, Shudder To Think). The songs reflected on Velocity Girl while at the same time looked forward to a hopeful future. As is often the case, life has a way of intervening and the tapes got buried on a shelf for 20+ years. Geoff recently rediscovered them and we were thrilled at how good they still sounded. We decided the songs should finally see the light of day and now here we are with a proper release, 25 years later.

Selling Points:

• Sarah Shannon was the lead singer of legendary Washington, DC indie rock band, Velocity Girl (1989-1997, Sub Pop Recording Artist)

• Velocity Girl has s old over 115k albums

• Velocity Girl will reunite in September 2023 to play the Black Cat anniversary show in Washington, DC!

• Sarah Shannon sang for the short -lived cult favorite band Starry Eyes, which also featured Jim Spellman and Kelly Riles (Velocity Girl) as well as Nick Pellicciotto (Edsel)

• Sarah Shannon had a successful solo career from 1999- 2007 (including an album on Minty Fresh) and then co- founded the popular kindie rock band The Not-Its! (2008 -present, performed at Lolla palooza 2013)

Rozi Plain’s 2019 ‘What a Boost’ is reissued on limited edition ecovinyl via Memphis Industries on 14 July. The reissue is timely, following on from the breakthrough success of her 2023 album Prize. ‘What a Boost’ was self-produced with the help of a long list of musical friends including Kate Stables, Jamie Whitby Coles, Neil Smith (all This is the Kit), Chris Cohen, Joel Wästberg (Sir Was) and Sam Amidon.

Rozi Plain has been making music since her brother taught her a few chords on the guitar aged 13. Raised in Winchester, she spent a few years studying art and painting boats in Bristol, where she began collaborating with long-term friends Kate Stables (This Is The Kit) and Rachael Dadd among many others on a thriving local scene. It was there that Rozi made her first two albums, 2008’s Inside Over Here and 2012’s Joined Sometimes Unjoined, each works of deliciously sad and beautiful pop full of heart-wrenching harmonies dotted with unexpected instrumental flourishes. Released in April 2015 on Lost Map and featuring contributions from Hot Chip’s Alexis Taylor among others her last album Friend was a deeply meaningful and wonderfully measured ode to memory, place, companionship and music’s remarkable power as an emotional salve.

Almost permanently on tour, Rozi has taken her joyous live show on the road countless times around Europe, the UK and the USA, and has toured with a host of alt-folk luminaries from Devendra Banhart to James Yorkston. She has appeared at festivals including SXSW, Iceland Airwaves, Glastonbury, End of the Road, Latitude, BBC 6Music Festival and Green Man. 2023’s album Prize was something of a breakthrough for Rozi seeing 4 star reviews in Uncut, Mojo and the Guardian and leading to an unlikely support slot with Paramore which saw her perform at mega domes around the UK. As bass player and backing vocalist in Rough Trade signed This Is The Kit, Rozi has been touring the world for years and features on the new album Careful of Your Keepers.

JULY 28, 2023

Exciting new release from prolific Memphis David Collins' Frog Squad. The group captures the magic of the bluff city in its confluence of carefully composed music with the creative looseness of some of the city's most respected players

Started by Collins in 2017, the band has always walked a fine line between the composed and the improvised And the creative urgency of the latter comes from the musicians he's recruited to the cause, including Khari Wynn of Public Enemy, and Chad Fowler, notable saxophonist on the free jazz scene

From avant-garde jazz to funk to hints of metal, listening to Special Noise is akin to traversing the surface of a strange planet.

All hail the kings of denim! Since the mid-90s, Norway’s Nocturnal Breed has spread terror and destruction through the metal scene with their extreme take on blackened thrash metal, and they still do with their 7th album, “Carry the Beast”.

Nocturnal Breed is now a trio consisting of S.A. Destroyer, T. Terror and I. Maztor, but they’re shredding like ever before, and have even thrown in some awesome old-school heavy metal in the mix. So, there’s a small evolution in the sound, without straying too much from the path. This is pure Nocturnal Breed delivering it yet again for all the Speed Metal Legions!

This album mirrors a lot of the darker sides of humanity that have crept to the forefront these last 2-3 years. And it shows in the intensity and vileness bleeding through this composition. Recorded without modern equipment, the sound of this creation is mercilessly unbridled and raw as a war wound. A wholehearted look back at what inspired the band and the extreme metal scene. As the band says: Give’em Hell, take no shit from anyone, and Carry the Beast with splendour your own way!

Icelandic composer Högni’s score for the muchacclaimed Netflix’s series Katla will see its full release on July 28.

The series takes place in Iceland, after the subglacial volcano Katla has been erupting constantly for a whole year, Gríma is still looking for her missing sister who disappeared the day the eruption started. As her hope of ever finding her body is fading, the residents of the surrounding area start to have visits from unexpected guests. There might be something hidden under the glacier no one could ever have foreseen.

Speaking about the score, Högni says: “when I was asked by Baltasar [Kormákur] – the director and show creator – I started writing so when the filming was finished, I had already written a number of pieces for the show. As relatively inexperienced in the field I imagined that my work was finished and the rest was a matter of post-production and music editing. However it immediately became clear that my ambitions and the nature of the project called for second, third and fourth wind in order to fulfil the auditory architecture that needed to be built”.

Realising it was a monumental task, Högni kept a strict schedule every day, starting by writing and arranging in the morning, recording and mixing in the afternoon and presenting to the producer each evening.

The score was recorded in Högni’s own studio, where him and his collaborators consisting of Tóti Guðnason, Inga Magnes, Petter Ekman, Þórunn Ósk and Sigurgeir found themselves working in a completely different way than they’ve done before, due to the nature of the project –“we worked the music out of my studio in Reykjavik, where a healthy number of musicians rotated through at the pace of an average ice cream parlour on a long summers evening in Reykjavik. The urgency of delivering cues and material left one in the state of instinctual execution at all hours without hesitation”.

Katla is released digitally and on limited edition vinyl via Erased Tapes Records.

Corvair - Bound To Be

Where Its At Is Where You Are LP WIA113LP 5057805968023

Clear vinyl LP. Bound to Be is Power POP veering from muscular rock songs to languid pop confessionals, from stunning atmospherics to raw intimacy. Corvair is a husband/wife duo from Portland, Oregon. Threading together 70’s pop, 80’s synth rock and 90’s indie rock, with influences from Berlin -era Bowie to Blondie, Lee and Nancy to the Breeders, Corvair’s evocative power pop is timeless and resonant. The duo ’s second album, Bound to Be, veers from muscular rock songs to languid pop confessionals, from stunning atmospherics to raw intimacy, held together by sharp lyrics and potent imagery. Naubert and Larimer have previously recorded or performed on more than twenty albums. Larimer’s musical mainstay was the garage pop band Eux Autres, broadly hailed as a “veritable cult classic” band and radio-debuted by the late John Peel. Naubert is a longtime fixture of the Northwest rock community, having played in vital bands such as Tube Top, Pop Sickle, The Service Providers, and the critically -lauded Ruston Mire, since 1995. Bound to Be is the duo ’s second album and will be released in June 2023 on Paper Walls and the cult indiepop label Where It’s At is Where You Are records out of London, UK. It features Larimer and Naubert on vocals and instruments, along with Northwest powerhouse drummer Mike Musburger (Fastbacks, The Posies). The duo attributes their sudden explosion of compelling songwriting to the fact they have been friends who watched each other’s musical trajectories for many years, but only in the last few years decided to collaborate.

HER UNFLINCHING EXAMINATIONS OF CAPITALISM, SEX, RELIGION, ET AL. ARE UNDERSCORED BY LENGTHY, GORGEOUS GROOVES. PEACOCK WIELDS HER VOICE WITH WILD ABANDON, AT TIMES DELIVERING A MELODY LIKE A BEAT POET WHILE OTHER TIMES WAILING OUT OF HER THROAT LIKE A SAXOPHONE, HITTING BLUE NOTES AS SHE PLEASES. WHERE MOST MUSICIANS RIFF, SHE CREATES SONIC SPACE. PERHAPS TOO ESOTERIC TO GARNER COMMERCIAL PRAISE AT THE TIME, WITH THIS REISSUE WE’RE PROUD TO ENCOURAGE THE DISCOVERY AND PRAISE THAT THE PERFECT RELEASE DESERVES.
