His last two releases, Makers (2006, Barsuk) and The Brag and Cuss (2007, Barsuk), found him exploring and paying homage to the folk and country music that shaped his early life in Texas (Alternative Press described the former as “the disc Ryan Adams keeps threatening to make but never quite delivers,” and Harp praised his “harmonies that would make Gram and Emmylou proud” on the latter). Where he’s going has to be better than where he’s coming from: In the years following the release of The Brag and Cuss, Votolato’s private lifelong battle with depression and anxiety started showing up in ways he could no longer hide from or disguise. Unable to write music or keep up the busy touring schedule that he’s been known for, he cut himself off from almost all outside contact (at one point barely leaving his apartment for over a year). Spending his time reading, studying existential philosophy, history, physics, and theology, he gradually overcame his demons. He began writing again, and through the making of the new album (recorded almost entirely on his own, and then mixed with the help of longtime production collaborator Casey Foubert [Sufjan Stevens, David Bazan] and old friend John Goodmanson [The Blood Brothers, Sleater-Kinney]) found some long sought-after understanding and peace of mind.

After the recent release of 55 CADILLAC - a compilation of improvised solo piano compositions - CLOSE CALLS WITH BRICK WALLS / MOTHER OF MANKIND deliver the slamming, inspirational music for which Andrew W.K. is loved, coupled with new sounds and feelings rarely associated with his traditional work. Close Calls With Brick Walls was recorded in multiple sessions throughout 2004 and 2005, using the full Andrew W.K. touring band for the first time. The lyrics are more complex although still very playful, and Andrew‟s voice has grown into something much more distinct and expressive. The two biggest constants throughout Xiu Xiu's catalog are honesty and evolution. This remains true with Dear God, I Hate Myself as it delivers a look at responsibility, fear, healing, and societal roles wrapped in rich gothic pop music. The sound is still distinctly Xiu Xiu, but Jamie Stewart's vocals are finally effortless paired with vibrant melodies full of subtlety and the distinct sonic accents expected of this anticipated Xiu Xiu release. The result is a record that proves that art can be pop and pop can challenge you to look inside yourself. Stewart is joined by new full-time band member Angela Seo on piano, synth, and drum programming; with production handled by Jamie and Deerhoof's Greg Saunier. Together they've crafted a fully-grown sound for Dear God, I Hate Myself with elements from Goth and pop that are expertly performed by a crop of brilliant musicians. Saunier himself plays on much of the record as does Ches Smith (John Zorn, Terry Riley, Marc Ribot). Ches supplies timpani, conga and moog along with a broad range of other instrumentation. Deerhoof's John Dieterich is all over a rendition of the traditional folk song 'Cumberland Gap' and Xiu Xiu is even joined by the Immaculata Catholic School Orchestra in Stewart's ode to heartbreak and healing, 'This Too Shall Pass Away (for Freddy).' The title track, one of four songs done primarily on a Nintendo DS, explores the relationship between faith and despair with a layer of commentary provided by the bizarre sounds of the music itself.

Electric President is made up of Ben Cooper and Alex Kane, both natives of Jacksonville, Florida. Their musical history is scattered. Ben played in bands from the time he was 13, in as many of four at once, sometimes as a guitarist, or a drummer, singer or bassist. Alex first started playing as the bass player in a band called The Helicopter Project, which Ben joined when they were in need of a singer. It was there that they first met and started recording as Electric President. - with Alex on Bass and Ben handling just about everything else. Since 2006 They’ve released two albums and two 7 inches as Electric President with the German imprint, Morr Music, and have toured in the US, Europe, and Japan. Their sound is a mixture of folk and indie pop crafted with electronic elements sometimes making occasional references to shoegaze and epic prog rock. Now In early 2010 they release “The Violent Blue” their first stateside album on New Haven, CT record label Fake Four Inc. Ben and Alex’s records stand out not only because of moments of irresistibly catchy melodies, or exquisite home production, but because of Ben Cooper’s knack for developed and detailed song writing. “The Violent Blue”, a title that stems from Ben’s nickname for the ocean, started as a collection of B-sides from the band’s 2008 “Sleep Well” sessions but grew into much more. The idea of “drowning in sound” became increasingly important in areas of the album, and the words turned out more personal than in the previous records. What came about is an elegantly crafted album that showcases Electric President’s mature and elaborate songs characterized by waves of harmonies, quiet acoustic guitars and loud distorted electric ones built upon layers of intricately produced percussive work whether it be in the form of big sounding drum machines, glitchy organic found sounds or live kit recordings. "Live! Beg, Borrow & Steal" showcases the PLIMSOULS at the height of their power, tearing the roof off and on the verge of starting a riot on the old Sunset Strip. Recorded on a multi-track at the Whisky A Go Go on October 31, 1981, this previously unreleased 18 song live album includes many of the PLIMSOULS classics as well as plenty of surprises. It has been stunningly remastered, features previously unpublished and gorgeous photos by photographer Bob Matheu. Includes 2 songs with guest appearance by the FLESHTONES. This is a must have for fans of the band, and rockn'roll lovers everywhere. Formed in 1978 by Peter Case (vocals, guitar) following his departure from the NERVES and the BREAKAWAYS, with Louie Ramirez (drums), Dave Pahoa (bass), and Eddie Muñoz (guitar), the PLIMSOULS effectively blended roots, British Invasion and garage rock into one unique soul-punk, garage-pop combo. With little more than thorny determination and a shoestring budget, she built a secluded ramshackle studio in the belly of one of Manchester’s crumbling mills and created her debut full length album, ‘Nerve Up’ in the span of four weeks. Born two miles east of Manchester city center and having lived for 10 years there right next to a motorway, the Mancunian Way, a stone’s throw from the Arndale Centre, Canal Street, all the shitty, brilliant pubs, clubs, dives, stinking canals, redbrick council estates, leafy suburbs and tarted-up ‘quarters’, LoneLady could walk around Manchester blindfolded. She loves / hates it, it is her home, so she had to record there. The nine piece Norwegian jazz-rockexperimental behemoth that is Jaga Jazzist (pronounced ʻyaga yazzistʼ) return to the fray with their stunning new album, “One-Armed Bandit”. All galloping rhythms, and grandiloquent reach, main man Lars Horntveth describes the new sound, tongue-a-little-in-cheek, as “Wagner meets Fela Kuti!” Certainly we find it harder to imagine a better soundtrack being written for the first Nollywood Viking epic. Lars Horntveth began writing the music for “One-Armed Bandit” early in 2008. Looking for a way between and beyond the bandʼs previous albums, “What We Must” and “The Stix,” Hornveth decided that everything would be charted and written out, more focussed and layered than ever before. One night, he came up with title-track “One Armed Bandit” and everything fell into place – a kind of ride of the polyrhythmic acid-addled valkyries that scarcely lets up across the 53 minutes of the final album. But then one would hope that would be the case if you were still aged aged just 18 and playing raw rock‟n‟roll that is shot through with a punk and garage band aesthetic, whilst visually resembling The Jam in 1978 (but a whole lot better looking).

In 1980 this was picked up by Mr Mike Stone from Clay Records who had produced bands like the Lurkers and GBH. The band went on to release the formidable album „When the Punks go Marching in‟. This had several hits in the Indie charts and reached number 3 as an album. Black Leather Girl was their second album in 1984; this went to number 8 in the Indie charts. Both albums sold in large quantities. They featured in the very popular Punk and Disorderly. It has been said that the band cast a shadow on the punk scene, influencing many a modern punk band with their hard abrasive edge but yet catchy and clever style of punk rock. Tours were done with bands such as Sham 69, Slaughter „n‟ the Dogs, GBH, Vice Squad, Angelic Upstarts. The band is now back and has been doing shows in the USA, Canada, Germany, Sweeden, Bel-gium, Spain, Poland, Italy, Ireland and the UK. Now planning tours in USA, Europe and Australia. On this first EP for the label, he showcase two strains of his many skills. 'Acid' cranks up the energy, with an ascending synth crashing into stuttering drums and synths. They play hide and seek with each other for a bit, before the track unexpectedly breaks into a 4 / 4 house rhythm, and then shatters into pieces again. On the flipside, 'Pro Plus', Terror is joined by long time collaborator D.O.K for a slice of their classic sound - an infectious, twisted sickly sweet synth melody wrapped around syncopated, stop start drums to mean effect.

Ask them what the initials stand for, and you will probably get a different answer every time. Visit their Myspace page one day, and you might see the caption “Nascere Artisti Morire Buffoni” (“Born Artists, Die Clowns”), but the following day it could be something entirely different, like “Neuroni Annoiati Masticano Boiate” (“Bothered Neurons Chew Rubbish”) „BMAN‟, their second album, is a magnificent sonic adventure, with a psychedelic flair reminiscent of The Flaming Lips, dynamics and industrial elements á la Nine Inch Nails, massive stadium-friendly tunes and, beating underneath it all, a big heart of soulful pop. „BMAN‟ is a musically diverse concept album that tells the tale of a little robot called BMAN and his quest for self-identity. Their fourth album, “Become Secret”, finds them on top form once again, with the familiar accompaniment of cello, acoustic guitar, drums and piano employed to great effect on songs that incorporate Eastern-European folk themes, bleak cinematic soundscapes and dark, unsettling pop. Front woman and songwriter Liz Hysen shares vocal duties on several songs with guest vocalists including Tony Dekker (Great Lake Swimmers), Brendan Massei (Viking Moses), Colleen Kinsella (Fire On Fire, Cerberus Shoal) and John McIntyre. Lyrically, Hysen drew inspiration from a variety of sources, including Cormac McCarthy, Westerns and the Bible, as well as Antonioni‟s film „The Passenger‟. (Hysen, an avid film buff who also makes Super 8 films as a hobby, says that the final album track, “The Stiff”, synchs up perfectly with the final scene of „The Passenger‟).
