olomon R. Guggenheim Museum--Frank Lloyd Wright architected this building, now designated the youngest New York City landmark. As you walk the spiral walkway toward the dome above, you will view works from artists of the 19th and 20th century including: Brancusi, Braque, Calder, Chagall, Robert Delaunay, Giacometti, Kandinsky, Klee, Leger, Miro, Picasso, and Van Gogh. The Guggenheim Museum, located on a section of Fifth Avenue known as Museum Mile, is housed in one of the most unique buildings in New York City. Designed by Frank L l o y d Wright, the museum is shaped roughly like a teacup or an upside down terraced hill. It is not unusual to see adults with their children here, going up and down the spiraling ramp. Exploring the Guggenheim is extremely enjoyable, but a floor plan is a necessity. The amount of artwork on display is significant, so much so that a visitor might feel a kind of art overload, which is why the museum offers self guided audio tours and group tours for interested visitors. Expect to spend at least half a day going through the galleries and exploring the building. Try to head here early and avoid the weekends when the museum gets extremely crowded. u

usion Records, a New York based record label has developed a focus to create, and get the appropriate marketing and promotions for their music in an effort to take caribbean music/culture to new levels of awareness in the worlds arena of entertainment. Why Caribbean music is not played enough on mainstream radio stations? The answer is simple, the production of their music is not done with parity to the American mainstream and their artists have no corporate structure supporting their growth and development. We had an opportunity to speak with the managing partners at Fusion Records and were able to obtain details on Rick Ramdehal, who is one of the first artists they are focusing on in the Caribbean. making this a success". The first generation of Ramdehal's that migrated to Guyana in the 1840's included four brothers, extremely talented and versatile in music, and considered in their country to be best of their time. Then there was Rick's grandfather the next generation, was once again one of four brothers. They too were referred to as the best musical talents of their time. Rick and his three brothers began their musical journey within the U.S. in their church, and through their fascination with Hindi movies. As the brother's musical talents emerged, (Rick's vocal skills became apparent by age ten) they slowly became aware of the significance of their grandfathers and great grandfathers musical influence on the West Indian community, particularly in Guyana. Since age 5 performing has felt as natural to Rick as breathing feels to most. His debut album with Fusion- 'Sexy Dancin' has been released since March and is in local music stores, mainstram retail stores, also available on the internet and in several West Indian convenience stores and markets. For upcoming performance dates throughout The U.S. and Carribean visit Rick Randemhal at www.fusionus.com. or by phone at (888) 273-6427. With roots running three generations deep into the style of music that he loves so much, Rick Ramdehal is truly worth every penny of his multi-faceted contract. u 9

Ask Dr. G ? LADIES: GET THE FACTS

Over the past decade as a gynecologist, I have seen many infections, and I have noticed a dramatic change in a certain type of "infection" for an unsuspecting group of women. To find out if you fall into this category, please read on. Take for example, it's the middle of winter, your hands or lips are dry, burning and itching. Hand lotion or Chap stick is applied and you feel better. But then you lick your lips or wash your hands and don't dry thoroughly, and soon after sense the burning again - like salt in a wound. Though we think the cure for dryness, is moistness, really, if dehydration and loss of tissue "turgor" (or water depletion from the skin) is the problem, then the solution can not be only adding moisture by way of licking one's lips does (since we all know that after licking, lips become more chapped). The solution is in the concept of never losing the water from under the skin layer, or somehow trapping it there. Oil is what keeps our deeper skin layers moist (that's where our fat layer begins), and the irritated drying effect of newly "watered" skin is obvious to anyone who has done dishes and allowed his or her hands to air dry causing even more "cracking", that only loads of expensive hand creams seem to fix. Well, the cure is in the prevention. Thoroughly drying the skin, followed

by subtle oils for maintaining moisture will go a long way. Now, why is a gynecologist interested in chapped, dried lips or hands, you ask. And what is the connection to my opening sentence. Well in the summer, and winter alike, I receive a flurry of calls and office visits for the dreaded, "yeast infection that I cannot get rid of!" Yes, I'm suggesting that the MAJORITY of your "yeast infections" are not due to yeast at all! And that if the infections are not even infections, but rather only "chapping", then why has "no one told me this before?" I don't know - perhaps a multi-million dollar anti-yeast cream industry doesn't want you to stop buying their modestly priced, easily available, overthe-counter products in exchange for what you actually will be cured by i.e. Vaseline or a similar oil-based moisturizer. Remember oil floats on water! Let me explain: if oils are your friend, and the cure to dryness and itching, and excessive surface moisture is your enemy, then before you try a $15 1-day, 3-day, or 7-day yeast cream, or itch for a week before calling your "GYN" because you thought not to bother him (or her), or pay for parking and your co pay at his (or her) office, begin by keeping yourself dryer to begin with (looser, more absorbent, cotton undergarments that "breathe" -- changed frequently, or a panty liner changed often), and moisturize with an oily skin ointment. here are many ointment types in the pharmacy appropriate for your more sensitive areas. Vaseline works well but is extremely messy. So if petroleum jelly isn't your thing, then look for some others in the "female hygiene product" section of your local Mom-and-Pop apothecary. My patients who have used the inexpensive product from Vagisil called Vagisil MOISTURIZER (not to be confused with some of their other products) seem to be very satisfied. There are many others, and it is unimportant which product you choose, but avoid the steroid creams unless prescribed by your doctor (since in certain cases the steroid compounds can be harmful), and avoid blanket use of antiyeast products when it is not FOR CERTAIN a yeast infection, and see your gynecologist if no improvement after a FEW days (the "three months and five creams later" approach has led to a lot of unnecessary suffering and wasted money). As general rules of thumb -- ointments are oil-based and creams are water-based - choose wisely! So to review, if you find you're itching or burning in or around the vagina: 1. start with making certain that you are always DRY - and if you are not it is very possible that your choice of panty is the culprit (sufficed to say, G-string, thong types are OUT, and I'll go into more detail in my next article what other problems these articles of clothing can cause); 2. be meticulous (not compulsive) about cleanliness (a small drop of urine or stool may provide a means for extra wetness with bacteria); 3. MOISTURIZE with OINTMENT (see above), though certainly NOT with a water- or alcohol-based cream; 4. and definitely seek medical attention if it persists more than a few days or worsens or is associated with more serious symptoms like fever or pain To summarize, you are not alone if you itch inside and out, and don't understand why the over-the-counter "magical" yeast cream didn't do the trick. It is unfortunately all too common a problem. Try what I've suggested, and if you are interested in some other common women's issues

and their solutions, read on in the next issue. Feel free to write in with ques- For info. or questions about tions. By Dr. Gary Greenstein M.D. u article, please send email

How to Keep Your Heart Healthy?

GET THE FACTS

AT THE HEART OF THE MATTER by Fazia Khan

O

ne of the reasons that some people may shrug off the possibility of developing heart disease is that it's a gradual, lifelong process that people can't see or feel. About the size of a fist, the heart muscle relies on oxygen and nutrients to continually pump blood through the circulatory system. In coronary artery disease, the most common type of heart disease, plaque builds up in the coronary arteries, the vessels that bring oxygen and nutrients to the heart muscle. As the walls of the arteries get clogged, the space through which blood flows narrows. This decreases or cuts off the supply of oxygen and nutrients, which can result in chest pain or a heart attack. Damage can result when the supply is cut off for more than a few minutes. It's called a heart attack when prolonged chest pain or symptoms (20 minutes or more) are associated with permanent damage to the heart muscle. Every year, more than 1 million people have heart attacks, according to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI). About 13 million Americans have coronary heart disease, and about half a million people die from it each year. What's Your Risk Profile? Risk factors for heart disease are typically labeled "uncontrollable" or "controllable." The main uncontrollable risk factors are age, gender, and a family history of heart disease, especially at an early age. The risk of heart disease rises as people age, and men tend to develop it earlier. Specifically, men ages 45 and older are at increased risk of heart disease, while women 55 and older are at increased risk. A woman's natural hormones give some level of protection from heart disease before menopause. For info. or questions about Even if you have uncontrollable article, please send email risk factors for heart disease, it REDINK@REDGRAFIX.COM doesn't mean that you can't take Attention: Fazia steps to limit your risk. SPORTS MR. BASEBALL Derek Jeter - NY Yankees Captain by S. Ali

I

t seems preposterous to mention a 30-year-old shortstop from Kalamazoo, Michigan in the same breath as the legendary Joe DiMaggio, but New York Yankee shortstop Derek Jeter is doing just that. In five full seasons, the statistics and honors accorded each player are striking. Jeter and DiMaggio each played 19 World Series games over their first five years in the major leagues. The Yankees went 16-3 in DiMaggio's time. They have gone 16-3 in the Jeter era. Jeter and DiMaggio each starred in Series play, accounting for at least one-fifth of their team's run production. Each player owns approximately 1,000 hits during that five year span. And each has taken New York by storm at a young age, although their personalities are much different. Derek Jeter was born in New Jersey, but reared in Kalamazoo Michigan where he became one of the nation's most sought-after high school baseball players. Recruited heavily by the University of Michigan, Jeter instead chose to sign with the Yankees after being drafted his senior year when he was named the National High School Player of the Year. Jeter supported the Yankees' decision to make him their first round pick by winning the minor league Player of the Year award. He hit .344 at Triple A Columbus and the Yankees were chomping at the bit to get him in the lineup. Rising quickly through the minor leagues, Jeter played briefly with the Yankees in 1995 and then became the Yanks' everyday shortstop in 1996. Just 21 on Opening Day, Jeter became the first Yankee rookie since 1962 to start at shortstop. He wasn't awed by the bright lights, however, hitting .314 and helping the Yankees to the World Series championship under manager Joe Torre. Always respectful, the young Jeter referred to his DEREK JETER

22

RED INK MAGAZINE

skipper as "Mr. Torre" in the clubhouse and in interviews with an amused media corps. But it wasn't a rookie act. Jeter continues to call Torre "Mister" even now as the Yankees celebrate their fourth championship in five years. Capping the season with the Rookie of the Year award in November, Jeter was already a sensation in New York. His youth, good looks, success and trendy clothes captured the fancy of fans and non-fans. But Jeter was just getting started. In 1998, now 24, he was named to his first All Star team. Solid in the field and dangerous at the plate, Jeter developed more muscle power by 1999. As the Yankees sought their second straight Series title and third in four years, Jeter hit .348 but also belted a career high 24 homers, 102 RBI and a slugging percentage of .552. In 2000, Jeter was again spectacular. He was the All Star game MVP, thanks to a first inning home run that propelled the American League to victory. But he saved his best for the post-season. Jeter continued his streak of errorless play at shortstop (he hasn't made one in the Series since '96) and his bat was a big factor in another Yankees championship. In game 2, he doubled and then scored the decisive run in a 6-5 win over the Mets. His homer in game five tied the score of a game the Yankees would win to capture the title. He was named the Series MVP. No player in major league history had ever won both the All Star and World Series MVP trophies in the same season. A bachelor, Jeter lives in Tampa, Florida during the off-season but enjoys the New York nightlife during the baseball season, often hitting trendy nightspots with Miss Universe Lara Dutta at his side. Unfailingly polite, Jeter has become a beloved superstar in a city that can be difficult for athletes but the greatest place in the world for winners. Jeter has certainly become that, thriving on the pressure with a competitive nature second to none. He's been a major contributor to the Yankees' incredible string of post-season victories that now number 46 since his arrival as the freshfaced kid from Kalamazoo. u

OMEN HAVE a lot on their plates to deal with in their daily lives. As a group, they tend to neglect their own health, especially when it comes to coronary heart disease and other diseases that adversely affect the heart and the body's blood vessel system. The fact is every woman in America (and indeed the world over) needs to be more proactive when it comes to coronary heart disease. Heart disease is the number-one killer of American women, with one in three women dying of heart disease. About 6·6 million have had some form of heart disease. It has been proven through studies and research that women don't take their risk of heart disease seriously-or personally. They often fail to make the connection between risk factors, such as high blood pressure and high cholesterol, and their own chance of developing heart disease under the misguided pre-conception that heart disease can be "cured" with surgery. The red dress is the heart of the Red Dress Project. The primary message driving the Heart Truth campaign is: heart disease doesn't care what you wear-it's an equal opportunity killer. The campaign pairs that message with an arresting visual-the red dress-as the national symbol for women and heart disease. This year, at the Olympus Fashion Week fall 2004 New York collections, the Heart Truth returned to centre-stage with a new edition of the Red Dress Collection, featuring 24 top-flight designers and 24 top models and celebrities. Sponsored by the NHLBI and underwritten by Johnson & Johnson, this star-studded fashion show highlighted the best of the fashion industry, and brought out an audience filled with high-powered celebrities, the crème de la crème of

magazine publishing, the arts and theatre world in New York City and all the important editors. Participating designers who donated one-off, exclusive creations include Francisco Costa of Calvin Klein, Badgley Mischka, Betsey Johnson, Carmen Marc Valvo, Carolina Herrera, Catherine Malandrino, Diane von Furstenberg, Estaban Cortezar, Cynthia Steffe, Donna Karan, Kenneth Cole, Marc Jacobs, Michael Kors, Nicole Miller, Oscar de la Renta, Proenza Schouler, Luca Luca, Ralph Lauren and Tommy Hilfiger. u F ashion Contd..on page 29 27

SINGER - Former Cat Stevens Barred From Entering U.S.Plane Diverted When Muslim Convert's Name Found on Watch List WASHINGTON (Sept. 22) - A London-to-Washington flight was diverted to Maine when it was discovered that passenger Yusuf Islam - formerly known as singer Cat Stevens was on a government watch list and barred from entering the country. United Airlines Flight 919 was en route to Dulles International Airport when the match was made Tuesday between a passenger and a name on the watch list, said Nico Melendez, a spokesman for the Transportation Security Administration. The plane was met by federal agents at Maine's Bangor International Airport around 3 p.m., Melendez said. Homeland Security Department spokesman Dennis Murphy identified the passenger as Islam. ''He was interviewed and denied admission to the United States on national security grounds,'' Murphy said. He said Islam would be put on the

first available flight out of the country Wednesday. Officials had no details about why the peace activist might be considered a risk to the United States. Islam had visited New York in May for a charity event and to promote a DVD of his 1976 MajiKat tour. One official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Islam, 56, was identified by the Advanced Passenger Information System, which requires airlines to send passenger information to Customs and B o r d e r Protection's National Targeting Center. The Transportation Security Administration then was contacted and requested that the plane land at the nearest airport, that official said. Melendez said Islam was questioned by FBI and Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials. Another federal official, who is in law enforcement and spoke anonymously because of agency policy, said that after the interview, Customs officials decided to deny Islam entry into

the United States. Flight 919 continued on to Dulles after Islam was removed from the flight. Islam, who was born Stephen Georgiou, took Cat Stevens as a stage name and had a string of hits in the 1960s and '70s, including ''Wild World'' and ''Morning Has Broken.'' Last year he released two songs, including a re-recording of his '70s hit ''Peace Train,'' to express his opposition to the U.S.-led war in Iraq. He abandoned his music career in the late 1970s and changed his name after being persuaded by orthodox Muslim teachers that his lifestyle was forbidden by Islamic law. He later became a teacher and an advocate for his religion, founding a Muslim school in London in 1983. Islam founded Islamia Primary school in London in 1983. In 1998, it became the first Muslim school in Britain to receive government support, on the same basis as Christian and other sectarian schools. A statement posted on a fan-sup-

ported Web site where his music is promoted said Islam being on a watch list ''is certainly an error.'' ''It's also a very sad state of affairs when a man best known as a peace loving pop star can be grouped into the same category Osama Bin Laden just because of his chosen faith,'' the statement said. Islam drew some negative attention in the late 1980s when he supported the Ayatollah Khomeini's death sentence against Salman Rushdie, author of ''The Satanic Verses.'' Recently, though, Islam has criticized terrorist acts, including the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks and the school seizure in Beslan, Russia, earlier this month that left more than 300 dead, nearly half of them children. In a statement on his Web site, he wrote, ''Crimes against innocent bystanders taken hostage in any circumstance have no foundation whatsoever in the life of Islam and the model example of Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him.'' After the Sept. 11 attacks, Islam issued a statement saying: ''No right thinking follower of Islam could possibly condone such an action: The Quran equates the murder of one innocent person with the murder of the whole of humanity.'' u

"As fashion week and the shows are about communicating the designer's vision to the world through the photographer's lens, partnering with a camera company with the status, style and design of Olympus makes sense on every level. Without the pictures - and the cameras - would there be a fashion week? Olympus' commitment to the fashion photographers, along with their passion for partnering with style makers and trendsetters, truly makes them the perfect partner." "At Olympus, our products are as much about design as they are about superior performance," said Martin Lee, vice president, marketing, Consumer Products Group, Olympus America. "Photography and design are both elements that are not only central, but absolutely crucial to fashion - making this partnership a perfect fit. Fashion Week provides a great opportunity for us to share our vision of stylish innovation with the fashion community, professional photographers, stylesavvy consumers and with retailers." Olympus became involved with New York Fashion Week in September 2003 as the official camera sponsor. With a particular focus on the over 400 professional photographers who cover the shows, Olympus provided a series of special programs and services designed to assist photographers with their work during the week. These services included shuttle buses to and from off-site shows, food and beverage service between shows and daily back massages. The September shows coincided with the introduction of the Olympus E-1, the world's first 100% digital interchangeable lens SLR system. The Olympus Lounge in the lobby of the Bryant Park Tents also featured a large wall of behind-the-scenes photographs taken at the event with the Olympus E-1. In February and moving forward, Olympus will continue its celebration of Fashion Week photography. They did it once again September 2004. At least you get it right by the beginning of October, just in time to deal with the important stuff.

Po e m

u

You Are my man

Starting on the 23rd, you find transformed vision and clear communication. Celebrate: It doesn't get much better than (June 22 - July 22) this.

Cancer

As September melts into October, you might be getting pretty intense. Calm down for a few weeks so as not to (July 23 - Aug 22) alarm anyone.

Leo

You roll right over any argument, and after October 2nd everybody's on your side. By the 15th, you're blending old (Aug 23 - Sep 22) and new in ways that truly make sense for the future.

Virgo

October 2nd, you get yours, no matter what anybody else Libra gets. Fair play kicks in again by the 7th - remember, balance (Sep 23 - Oct 22) is what you're all about. Your virtues carry the day on the 23rd, and the 30th lets you definitively end a troublesome issue or two. You feel (Oct 23 - Nov 21) proud and others are proud of you - and for good reason.

Scorpio

October brings an uneasy peace, and by the 15th, you're ready to take a calmer and wiser course. Between the 23rd (Nov 22 - Dec 21) and 30th, you veer unstably between control and chaos.

Riddle

u

Mr and Mrs Smith have two children. You ring at their door, and one of their two children, a girl opens the door. What is the probability that the other child is also a girl? by Richard Persaud

Solution:

Background noise builds to a dull roar, and you'll do anything to escape it. Boiling blood simmers down by October, (May 21 - June 21) when everything's okay again.

Gemini

You're my man, my mighty king, And I'm the jewel in your crown, You're the sun so hot and bright, I'm your light-rays shining down, You're the sky so vast and blue, And I'm the white clouds in your chest, I'm a river clean and pure, Who in your ocean finds her rest, You're the mountain huge and high, I'm the valley green and wide, You're the body firm and strong, And I'm a rib bone on your side, You're an eagle flying high, I'm your feathers light and brown, You're my man, my king of kings, And I'm the jewel in your crown.

You know that they have two children, that is four possibilities (Boy-Boy, Girl-Boy, Boy-Girl and GirlGirl). Because you know that one of them is a girl, the first possibility is ruled out. So the probability that the second one is a girl is 1/3..

By the Bank Holiday weekend you add up just what you Taurus have in hand, and by mid-October, your conscience is crys(April 20 - May 20) tal clear once again.
