Jamaican artist Shuga will release her latest single, “Love Doctor,” on November 7 via VP Records. Produced by Donovan Germain on the "Boxing Around" riddim, this Lovers Rock track taps into the deep emotional yearning for love, presenting it as both a remedy and a source of comfort.
The accompanying music video, directed by Kenny Gray, features a medley that includes Shuga’s cover of Cornell Campbell’s “Boxing Around,” highlighting contrasting views of desire through both songs. The video was released on November 7.
Misty Campbell began her professional career as “Brown Shuga” in 2005 while touring as a professional vocalist with reggae artist Tanya Stephens. With a sound as sweet as her name, Shuga is described as ‘the sweetest artist to merge from the shores of Jamaica’. Campaigning positivity through her self proclaimed ‘Sisterhood Empowerment’ movement, the singer embodies the style and grace from an Empress in this
generation of reggae music. Performing from intimate to large scale audiences, her diligence led her to Penthouse Records where she met Donovan Germain in 2011 and signed to his label. Dropping the ‘Brown’ from her name, she became simply “Shuga”. Her rebel spirit along with positive messages, create music that is reflective and relatable.
“Shugah” adopted her moniker depicting the sweet sugary sound of her vocal ability. Her vast talent for singing and songwriting continues to grow her as an artist. She continues to share the stage among the most sought after reggae artists in the world. Her discography includes hits such as “Complicated Love”, “9.58”, “Give my sou to Jah”, “Ride the Riddim”, “Ebony” (2014 Black History Month tribute), “In Deh”, “I Trees Medley”, “Seal up again”, “Crime Scene (Johnny Dead)” and “Banana”. Over the years she has worked alongside renowned producers and musicians: Sly & Robbie, Boot Camp Records, Computer Paul Henton, Donovan Germain, Jah Snowcone, Riff Raff, Silky Walks Discotheque, and recently the Scrucialists.
Her experience has brought her to perform on many stages at many international festivals including the infamous Reggae Sumfest (Jamaica), Tribute to Bob Marley (European Tour), Reggae Festival (Curacao), Reggae Jam (Germany), Reeds Festival (Switzerland), Casalabate Music Festival (Italy), Yaam (Belgium),
Reggae Geel (Belgium), Level the Vibes (Germany) and Rototom Sunsplash (Spain) to name a few. Shuga’s fans can expect a delivery of quality music in her upcoming album and soulful performances every time she touches the stage.

Hello, Love, Again
Quincy Delight Jones Jr. was born on March 14th, 1933 in Chicago, IL. He is the storied music producer and composer that produced the biggest hits and albums of some of the greatest music artists of all time, including Frank Sinatra and Michael Jackson. He also composed some of the most memorable film and movie scores of all time. He died in his home surrounded by family and friends on November 3, 2024 after losing a battle with pancreatic cancer.
Quincy Jones made it to the age of 91 because he was a survivor and a trendsetter. The first half of his life was wrought with tragic events. As a young boy, he witnessed his mother have a schizophrenic breakdown and be sent to a mental institution. Soon after this, his father divorced her and then remarried a woman who would become the proverbial “evil Stepmother.” She had three prior children and only cared for them and instead abused Quincy, which is why he ran away at the age of 14 and joined the National Guard by lying about his age.
Continued on page 10
Continued from page 9
Some friends and he did this and it was at this time he had his next significant tragedy. His friends were on the way to play music at a rodeo in Yakima when they were hit by a bus. All of his friends died, with one of them decapitated in front of him and from that day forward the trauma made it so he never learned to drive. The next real tragedy was at the age 41 in 1974, when he barely escaped death from a ruptured brain aneurysm and then soon after had to undergo surgery to stop another aneurysm from bursting. But Quincy Jones was tough as nails from growing up in the mean streets of Chicago in the 1930’s and he was a force to be reckoned with that even an aneurysm could not stop. The rest of his history was that of legends.
The legend began from the start of his career when he was a simply a trumpet player with the best luck in the world; at the age of 19 he became a trumpet player with Lionel Hampton’s big band (his first regular professional job) and played at President Dwight D. Eisenhower’s inaugural in 1953. And then it began to blossom when he began composing and producing records for the biggest names in the world. He produced for and became great friends with Frank Sinatra and Ray Charles, and they brought him into the celebrity scene where he first became the legendary playboy and ladies’ man that he was known to be. I mean this guy had a child with actress and model Nastassja Kinski in 1993 when he was 60 and she was 32 and in the prime of her career. He was also married to two other actresses and models. He has several children, of whom; some are famous in their own right.
Rashida Jones, is the world famous actress from The Office, Boston Public and many other TV shows and movies, Kenya Kinski-Jones is a world famous fashion model and cover girl and Kidada Jones was
engaged to and living with Tupac Shakur at the time of his tragic death. Out of all the stories in this legend, his creation of the album Thriller with Michael Jackson was probably the highest point, since it became the highest selling album of all time, selling more than 70 million copies world-wide. He also produced and composed Michael Jackson’s other top albums and songs, including the albums Bad and Off The Wall and the songs Billie Jean and Beat It, which became a genre bending song, because Jones got Eddie Van Halen to come and perform the track’s guitar solo. He is also the award winning producer that was able to bring together the top 46 Musical Artists of the world in 1985 to create the song, We Are The World, which to this day is probably one of the most iconic and memorable songs of all time. It was made to raise money for the relief of famine in Africa, and raised over $60 million for the effort. It was during the production of We Are The World, that Quincy coined the phrase that is still used by music and television producers today, “Check your egos at the door.” To say that Quincy Jones was a world traveler who knew everybody would be the biggest understatement of the century.
From Flying on Sinatra’s private Learjet, to Bono taking him to the Vatican to meet the Pope, to dining out with his neighbors Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk, and Mark Zuckerberg. His influence was so great and since he was such good friends with the Clintons already, Oprah tried to introduce him to Barrack and Michelle Obama when trying to drum up support. This is a man that has travelled to dozens of countries, and had girlfriends in many of them, and learned to speak and/or write nearly 26 languages. This man was pretty much the living embodiment of the Dos Equis’ “Most Interesting Man in the World.”
Aside from being a legendary album and song producer to the greatest stars of the last generation, including Sinatra, Bono, Michael Jackson, Diana Ross and Aretha Franklin just to name a few. He was also an award winning producer and composer of Musical Scores and Movie and Television shows. He created both the opening score and co-produced the show The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air after signing a major deal with Warner
Bros. Pictures. He also composed the score and produced the movie, The Color Purple. Throughout this storied career he also became one of the few people in the world to attain EGOT. EGOT is the term for someone who has earned at least one of each of an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony award. He won 28 Grammy Awards, 1 Emmy award for the musical composition of Roots, 1 Tony Award for the revival of The Color Purple, and 1 Oscar for his Humanitarian efforts.
To say Quincy Jones lived a long and amazing life simply does not do him justice. He was and forever will be a legend. He influenced the world more than he may ever know, with his music, movies, television shows and philanthropic efforts. His legacy will live on forever in the past and present pop culture of almost every genre. You will be missed dearly by the billions of fans around the world and of course by your family and friends. May you forever Rest in Peace. by Michael

“Independent does not mean amateur" is the guiding principle of producer and publisher Jon K.T., who emphasizes that being an independent artist requires mastering the business of music as much as the art.
Jon’s love for music began with drumming. Inspired by his mother’s Motown records, Jon started drumming at age eight, using a pair of chopsticks on the couch. He quickly discovered that different parts of the couch created different sounds. His makeshift drum set evolved, progressing to Tupperware and eventually to the church drum set when he was tall enough to reach the pedals. From there, Jon added guitar and keyboard to his skills, thanks to his uncle, who gifted him his first keyboard, sparking his journey into songwriting at just 14.
In 1977, they performed at President Jimmy Carter’s Inaugural Ball and since then have received their share of platinum and gold singles, albums, and other industry kudos; most notably a 1980 Grammy for “Shining Star” written and produced by Paul Richmond & Leo GrahamIn 1985, THE MANHATTANS, wanting to enhance their show by adding a female vocalist to the act, chose Regina Belle after being introduced to her by legendary New York dj Vaughn Harper. Spending two years touring with THE MANHATTANS, she appeared on the Bobby Womackproduced single, “Where Did We Go Wrong” (a duet with Gerald Alston). She also contributed to The Manhattans 1986 Columbia Records album, “Back To Basics”. A year later she was signed to the label as a solo artist.
After 16 years with Columbia Records, lead singer Gerald Alston took his turn as a solo artist with Motown Records; while Blue Lovett, due to doctor’s concerns regarding his health, decided to turn his attention towards producing and grooming new artists. The late 1980’s found THE MANHATTANS pursuing individual interests within the industry.
In 1993, all that changed. With their 30th anniversary approaching in 1994, it was the perfect time to reunite. So, along with new members Troy May and David Tyson, a reunion tour was born.
After finishing school, Jon worked as a carpenter, later moving from England to the U.S., where he joined Sony. Despite his day job, he remained deeply involved in music, performing and creating with various bands. When the 2008 recession hit, Jon lost his job, which led him to rethink his career. Determined to stay connected to his passion, he enrolled in an associate's degree program in audio engineering at Madison Media Institute. There, he earned his Recording Technology degree, became Pro Tools certified, and stepped into the world of professional studio engineering. His degree opened doors: Jon first worked as a tutor and later joined a translation company, where he recorded, mixed, and mastered multilingual sessions for instructional videos and TV commercials.
Day concert in the Montego Bay / Kingston area. And would like to start that tradition back again.
RED INK: The Manhattan’s began performing in 19 that is 57 years of performing. Do you find yourself slowi down at all or are you ready for many years to come?
GA: Ready for many years to come..
RED INK :
independent artists on the music industry’s ins and outs. His mantra, “independent does not mean amateur,” serves as a reminder that while independence allows freedom from corporate influence, it requires the discipline to meet industry standards. For example, why spend thousands of dollars to record your song or music without hiring someone to market it for you? Another example is producers who sell tracks they made but don’t get credit for them. The people who create the music are creators, too. That’s why producers must go through publishing and buy a license to get their residuals. Also, it’s vitally important to copyright your song with the Library of Congress in the USA, or whoever handles copywriting in your country. Artists and Producers can find all the relevant information about the process online.

GA: New Single - Get it Ready. New Album – In process of being put togeth will be a combination of a few “Live” versions some of their classic songs as well as 4 or 5 “Ne songs. Still actively Touring as well.
For instance, Jon often receives tracks with generic names like “Audio 1” or “Audio 2,” etc, instead of “guitar, drums, vocals, etc.”, a setup that frustrates engineers who then waste time relabeling each track. He encourages artists to take full control, advising them to invest in marketing, protect their work, and understand the business framework.
On February 25, 1999 THE MANHATTANS were inducted into the Rhythm and Blues Hall of Fame.
In 2003, THE MANHATTANS released their first studio album in fifteen years featuring the beautiful ballad “Turn Out The Stars” which became one of the year’s best songs. On December 9, 2014 Winfred “Blue” Lovett passed away.
On August 15, 2018, THE MANHATTANS will celebrate their 56th anniversary.
On The Love & Harmony Reggar cruise 2019, RED INK Magazine had the pleasure of interviewing Mr. Gerald Alston of The Manhattans. He’s a classy and an extremely humble human being. It was truly a pleasure meeting this great singer.
Seeing a path forward, Jon pursued a bachelor’s degree in Music Production and later established his own production and publishing company. Though he initially focused on reggae, his studies in music theory expanded his sound, creating a fusion of gospel, pop, hip-hop, and reggae. With a promotion in his day job, Jon took on another educational challenge, earning a master's in Entertainment Business, where he learned marketing, management, copyright law, and licensing essentials.
RED INK: With the love that Jamaica has for you and the love that you have for Jamaica, you must love performing there; how long has it been since your last Jamaica concert?
RED INK: With recording for over 62 yea and being able to hear yourself on all differe media formats, from Vinyl Records, to Casse tapes and CD’s, additionally with the resurgen of Vinyl records over the last few years, do y have a favorite media format?
GA: “Believe it or not; I am glad you asked that questio because at first I had heard CD’s in Japan, many years a when they had first started, and I had thought to mys ‘wow, this sounds great, like the music is flowing,’ th recently I heard the same album on Vinyl and ‘Vinyl kic CD in the butt.’ It sounds just like the way it sounds in t studio.” ~ Gerald Alston
Jon emphasizes the importance of proper labeling and tagging when sending music to radio stations or attaching it to music videos. Essential details, like song title, artist name, songwriter, album title, and ISWC code, allow licensed radio stations to track plays and ensure payment. In the U.S., artists can license their work with organizations like BMI or ASCAP, which issue ISWC codes for performance rights and ISRC codes for streaming. Jon notes that generating income takes around 50,000 mainstream radio plays or 100,000 independent radio plays. He advises artists to report every live performance to their respective rights organizations for additional royalties.
GA: Two years ago in Kingston for the Startime Concert.
(It was the biggest venue in the 29 year history of Startime, it was held in the National Arena. Gerald Alston made a personal tribute to deceased Manhattans co-founder Winfred “Blue” Lovett, at the performance.)
In the last five years, Jon has dedicated himself to educating
RED INK: Will you be returning soon to Jamaica?
RED INK: What is your personal favorite song, the m meaningful to you?
GA: The most meaningful song to me is, “There is no without you” It was released in 1973 and there was a C Records international conference in San Francisco where was performed and that gave The Manhattan’s and the so international exposure. They got to perform with MFSB.
Jon reminds us that independent artists don’t have to be amateurs. Independence in music is about taking responsibility, protecting your work, and ensuring that every performance and every play counts—on your terms.

Instructions:
Step 1
Heat up the oil in a skillet over high heat on the stove-top.
Step 2
Once the oil is shimmering, add in the steak, making sure to season it heavily with salt and pepper as it cooks.
Step 3
Cook the pieces of steak for about 2 minutes, continuing to stir and turn the steak until you reach your desired level of doneness. The steak will continue to cook after it has been removed from the heat for several minutes, so be careful not to overcook it.
Step 4
When you have removed the steak, move it to a plate and tent it with aluminum foil. Next, turn the heat to low and melt the butter in the same skillet.
Step 5
Once the butter is melted, add in the garlic and pepper flakes, and saute until you can smell the garlic and it starts to brown, about 30 seconds, making sure to stir it constantly.
Step 6
Directly pour the garlic butter over the steak bites, tossing it all together.
Step 7
Garnish the dish with parsley and serve warm.
Enjoy!

In December, the thoughts and feelings accumulated throughout the year will surface, which is why Aries may experience severe headaches or migraines. Let your thoughts flow, try yoga or massage and relax. After a year-long hustle and bustle, you will take refuge in your home with your better half.
In December, Taurus will be carried away by the Christmas mood, and they will put all worries behind them. You will meet your old friends you have not seen for ages, and you will enjoy many wild parties together, where you will relax your brain, but your body will get exhausted easily, so be careful and consider whether it is worth it.
December will be a month of love and passion for Gemini. Since you have mastered the preparations for Christmas, you can take a moment with your partner just for yourself. You will be engulfed by the desire for a warm hug that will fill you with love, and nothing else will matter at that moment.
December awakens a lot of emotions in Cancer. During this period, you will be very sensitive, sometimes maybe even oversensitive. However, this is not a bad thing; try to get the most out of it. As a very sensitive person, you will be able to recognise how people around you feel so you can help them, or you can easily assess what you can say in front of them and how.
In December, Leo will fully enjoy the Christmas spirit. You can put all your work behind you, as you have no rest left and you can focus on Christmas shopping and preparing for the holidays. After a long time, you will see your family, so pay attention to them and listen to them, they will be grateful for that.
December will be a month of well-being for Virgo. Finally, you'll have time for some peaceful, creative activity, such as painting or playing a musical instrument, where you can express yourself and relax. You will be more introverted during this period, so do not rush into big events so that you do not get into a stressful situation unnecessarily because, in such situations you will tend to act very excessively.
In December, Libra will be hearty and hospitable. You will enjoy the fact that you can make someone happy, so you will thrive on shopping for Christmas presents and preparing for the holidays.
