RACHAEL LILLIS

Voice of Misty and Jesse on Pokemon, Died at 55

The Rachael Lillis was born July 8th, 1969 in Niagara Falls, NY. Originally she had planned on a medical career and was a premed student, but eventually she found her true calling which was her voice. After thoroughly training her voice in opera, she found her way to Anime voiceover work and never looked back. Her voice is one of the most recognizable in the pokemon series, as she voiced not one but two leading roles and several smaller parts. She was a co-lead on over 400 episodes of the

English dub of Pokemon. She voiced Misty, Ash’s first companion and friend and also voiced the lead antagonist of the show, Jesse, who was half of the Jesse and James Team Rocket duo who tried to wreak havoc on Ash and Pikachu in every episode of the show. Not only voicing a hero and villain in the same show, Rachael also voiced several of the cute pokemon voices including Goldeen, Vulpix, Jigglypuff, and Venonat. In all, she voiced these characters in 423 episodes, 9 movies and several video games

Lillis also had roles in dozens of other anime over the last 20 years, including Hunter X Hunter, Alien Nine, DNA, K.O. Beast, Berserk, The Slayers, Bakuman, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Winx Club, to name just a few. She also voice characters in several video games, including all of the Super Smash Bros. games, Ape Escape 2, Valkyrie profile, Pac-Man and the Ghostly Adventures and Lego Jurassic World.

All in all Rachael led a very successful and memorable career and is someone who was loved in general by everyone who met her, all of her co-stars had nothing but incredible and loving things to say about working with her. She was an iconic voice in one of the biggest animated shows in history and will be remembered forever by her family and fans alike. Rachael lost her long-time battle with breast cancer when it moved to her spine and ultimately caused her death on August 10th, 2024. Rachael, you were taken far too early and in the Prime of your career. You will be missed but never forgotten. Rest in Peace. By Michael Devine

SIMONE BILES

The Greatest Olympic Gymnast of All-Time Shines Bright in Paris

Simone Biles is someone who was truly born to be a gymnast. She had her first gymnastics class at age 6 and began training professionally with a coach at age 8, and the rest is history. However, early on in life she had to overcome some obstacles, her mother was unable to care for her and her 3 siblings and wound up putting them into foster care, however there was a beacon of light in her grandfather and great aunt, who adopted her and her siblings to take them out of the system and reunite them with their family. But that short stint of chaos only served to fan her flames brighter. From that challenge early in life to now at the age of 28 becoming the second oldest gymnast in history to win an Olympic all-around medal is incredible. Over the last decade and three Olympic Games, she has accumulated 11 Olympic medals, and 30 World Championship medals, making her the most decorated gymnast in history. She is tied with Věra Čáslavská, from

the 1960s, as the second-most decorated female Olympic gymnast. And she currently holds the title for most Olympic medals earned by any U.S. Gymnast, male or female. She also has the new record for most gold medals by a U.S. gymnast, which is 7 gold medals and the next-closest has five. Simone has won two Olympic all-around and vault titles and has won the all-around title at the World Championships, six times. This incredible title accumulation is taking into account that she was stricken by the yips or twisties during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and could not compete in most of the events, due to fear of injury. When an athlete comes down with the yips or the twisties it affects their balance similar to a bout of vertigo. It was unfortunate but even with the condition; she managed to win a silver medal with her team and a bronze medal on the balance beam. She proved

then and there that she was a true athlete and was the definition of perseverance. She never gives up.

Simone Biles, truly never gives up and behind the scenes she suffered many injuries and even sexual assault throughout her famed Olympic career. Over the years she has had surgery for a bone spur, suffered a broken toe, kidney stones, and serious shoulder and calf injury. The latter of which she suffered during the most recent 2024 Olympics and still took home the gold, and was seen wearing a medical boot at the closing ceremonies. And unfortunately, Biles, is one of the victims of Larry Nassar, the Olympic physician, that was outed during the Me Too movement when several Olympians came forward and stated that he had inappropriately touched, groped and even raped hundreds of female Olympians over the years, most of them while they were underage minors.

Continued on page 10

Continued from page 9

Larry Nassar was ultimately convicted and sentenced to life in prison for being a child predator and sexually assaulting dozens of girls and possessing child pornography. The fact that female Olympians were forced to be alone in a room with a sexual predator, and that it flew under the radar for so long is a disgrace that the Olympic Committee may never live down. But know that this does not and will not define who Simone Biles is. She has proven that she is a hero and true Olympian that never gives up, never stands down and shines brightly. As for the future, even Simone does not know what it holds. In press releases after the most recent 2024 Paris Olympics, she stated that she did not decide if she is retiring or competing in the 2028 Los Angeles games. My prediction is that it would be a shame if we do not get to see her shine brightly again on the “home field.” So hopefully we will get to see the bright star that is Simone Biles shine again at the next Olympics. Only time will tell. by

Leandro Garcia Barbosa is a professional musician, guitarist, music producer, arranger and composer. With over 24 years of career, Leandro, better known as Lelo Garcia, is a Brazilian born in São Paulo but raised in Santa Catarina, in the city of São José. He started playing music at the age of 14 with the guitar, encouraged by his father, and switched to electric guitar two years later. With a natural talent for music, influenced by a family of musicians, Lelo started playing in the church as most musicians. After graduating from high school, Lelo Garcia studied Business Administration for 2 years, but decided to drop out of college because music was taking on a greater role in his life. After that, he attended EM&T in São Paulo, a renowned music school, and specialized in music production and arrangements, which opened the doors to recording studios, proving himself to be a versatile and punctual musician in his performance and library of rhythms and musical styles. He has participated in more than 100 albums, including CDs and DVDs, recorded throughout his career. In 2015, he recorded his first solo album, “Before the Evil Days Come,” available on all major platforms.

In 2015, he moved to Orlando with the intention of expanding his musical career and having the experience of playing with American musicians. In 2016, he got in touch to play at an American church called Majestic Life, where he began to network with the church's musicians, which was his turning point in the world of American music.

The musicians really liked my work and started recommending me to bands, singers, projects and big names in music such as:

- Jonathan Cain from Journey and Brian Head from Korn at an event for 9 thousand men called Better Man 2019.

(Journey known for the hit “don’t stop believing” and the band Korn are big names in music in the USA like Guns n Roses and Bon Jovi)

In parallel to this, Lelo Garcia is a music teacher and opened his music school, EMLG, in 2003 in Brazil, where he began teaching music to people of all ages, having numerous students in Brazil and the USA who are already professionals in the music market to this day. Red Ink Magazine had the pleasure of interviewing Lelo Garcia, This is what this super talented musician had to tell us.

REDINK: Who or what influenced you to become an artist and at what age did it all began?

LG: I stared playing guitar at 14 years old influenced by my dad which is a guitar player and also the Christian rock band called Petra I loved them since first time I listened their music

REDINK: Tell us some of your struggles in the business, if any.

LG: I think in the music business like all businesses has a lot of competition, that’s why we as artist got to renew ourselves constantly which is a good thing because this way we extract the best of ourselves.

REDINK: Do you have a favorite project that you worked on; that you’re most proud of?

LG: I would say there’s many projects that i am really proud of like:

•My own album “before the evil days come” available in all platters of streaming.

• The opportunity of sharing the stage with big names of the music like: Jonathan Cain from Journey or Brian Head from Korn, Cece Penestone, Sisaundra Lewis

• But lately the project that makes excited the most is playing with my band Paradigm Party Band we really put a show together and it is always a great time.

REDINK: If you could collaborate with someone you never did before, who would it be and why?

LG: I would love to do music with Petra because it’s the band that influenced me the most to become a musician so it would be like a dream come true.

REDINK: Tell us something about yourself, a quote perhaps.

LG: I’m a simple man that received the gift of sharing feelings and emotions through music and that’s what I love to do and that’s what I’m really grateful for.

REDINK: Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

LG: Everybody wants to get better opportunities like playing with famous people doing big tours etc but I really think that if I’m able to keep doing my music with the people that I love, that will make me the happiest person in the world. So if I can combine both together, that would be perfect.

REDINK: Tell us about your latest project.

LG: My album “before the evil days come” was recorded in 2015 it has 10 tracks and each song is a different music style. We got rock, funk, samba, chorinho, baião, metal, salsa all together in this album( I’m Brazilian so I couldn’t forget about the samba, chorinho and baião Brazilian music genres ). Me as guitar player and lover of most music genders I love this possibility of music expression with different music styles so that’s what I did. I wrote all the songs and I recorded Eletric/acoustic guitar and bass guitar.

REDINK: What can we expect next from you?

LG: Now is time to start the second album so I’m putting together all new ideas new riffs new tones to start produce the new album. I got some great ideas coming up and I know it is gonna be even better.

This concludes our interview with Lelo Garcia. Support this talanted & exceptional Musician. Check out his website.

HARLEM FASHION WEEK

Celebrates 50th

Anniversary in

HARLEM WEEK began in the summer of 1974 as a “one-time only,” one-day event (HARLEM DAY) with the huge objective of creating a muchneeded “positive vibe” and pulling the greater Harlem community’s residents, businesses, religious, educational, arts and cultural institutions out of the most severe economic and social doldrums that New York City and the nation had faced in generations.

A diverse array of visionaries — made up mostly of Harlem leaders, luminaries and their staunch supporters — saw beyond the abandoned buildings, derelict cars, litter-strewn streets, and shuttered storefronts – to envision a more prosperous future for greater Harlem.

This event was organized by Hon. Percy Sutton, then the Manhattan Borough President and board chairman of what was the Uptown Chamber of Commerce (predecessor to The Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce), who expressed strong interest in creating a one-day event to revitalize Harlem by lifting the spirits of neighborhood residents who were suffering disproportionately from the rts, Voza Rivers, Marvin Kelly, Larry Frazier, Tony Rogers, Stephanie Francis, and led by Lloyd Williams.

Other historic HARLEM DAY cofounders, included Maya Angelou, James Baldwin, Harry Belafonte, Ornette Coleman, Ossie Davis, Ruby Dee, Lloyd E. Dickens, David Dinkins, Basil Paterson, Tito Puente, Charles Rangel, Max Roach, Vivian Robinson, “Sugar Ray” Robinson, Hope R. Stevens, Bill Tatum, Barbara Ann Teer, Rev. Wyatt T. Walker and others who shared the vision. With their efforts, along with other well-known Harlemites as well as “everyday people,” the first HARLEM DAY was held.

It began with the cutting of a ribbon at 12:00 noon on the N/E corner of West 138th Street and Seventh Avenue which officially renamed 7th Avenue to Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. Boulevard, the first time that a major street in New York City was named after a person of color. Building on the many positive spirits of the first day (as well as the day being the historic grand opening of the Harlem State Office Building), WBLS-FM’s renowned radio personalities Hal Jackson and Frankie Crocker hosted a HARLEM DAY concert on the plaza of the State Office Building, featuring artists Tito Puente and Chuck Jackson.

Utilizing the well-known reputation of the 1st Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s and 1930s, HARLEM DAY was decreed “THE BEGINNING OF THE SECOND HARLEM RENAISSANCE” by the legendary Ossie Davis, who said the day “provided a much-needed spiritual boost” for the entirety of Harlem. That “spiritual boost” will continue through HARLEM WEEK 2024’s conferences, sporting events, cultural events and festivities, offering multiple positive benefits for Harlem, New York City and the “Harlems of the World.”

HARLEM WEEK is an annual celebration of the best of Harlem which works to promote its rich AfricanAmerican, African, Caribbean, Hispanic, and European history, as well as arts, culture, religion, business, entertainment, and sports. HARLEM WEEK began in 1974 as HARLEM DAY, a one-day event of encouragement and fellowship in Harlem for New Yorkers and beyond. Given the huge success of the celebration, additional days were added to showcase the community’s rich economic, political, and cultural history.

In August 2024 many designers came out to showcase their fabulous designs to a large crowd who was not disappointed with the different variety that was showcased to them. This even gets better and better each year. Celebrating the 50th year was amazing and successful. REGGAE ON THE RIVER

Delivered with Stellar Performances

After a six-year hiatus and the cancellation of the Sierra Nevada World Music Festival, anticipation for Reggae On The River's return was reaching fever pitch. With a stellar line-up including headliners like Reggae legends Capleton, Anthony B, Collie Buddz, along with many other favorite artists, a good smattering of locally based Reggae artists, and an abundance of DJs and Sound Systems, this festival was looking to be something special.

Reggae On The River was established in 1984 as a non-profit event to raise funds for a new community hall in Garberville, California, after the original hall was destroyed by arson. Over the years, the festival became a beloved gathering for Reggae enthusiasts from Northern California and around the world, with many fans traveling great distances to attend. The event was set against the backdrop of the majestic redwood trees and the scenic Eel River. Despite facing challenges with location changes, Reggae On The River continued to thrive for many years. However, in 2019, the festival was canceled due to ongoing difficulties securing a stable venue and declining ticket

sales. After the pandemic lockdowns were lifted in 2022, the event did not return due to issues with obtaining venue permits. Reggae On The River 2024 started with conversations between Hot Milk Entertainment and The Mateel organization a few years ago. Still, after many hours of negotiations, it was abandoned because of continuing venue issues. In 2023, it again came to the forefront, and with the “never give up” mentality of the entities involved, the venue issue was finally resolved. Reggae On The River 2024 was about to happen.

With a media pass to Reggae On The River 2024, I was able to set up my campsite on Thursday, the day before the general public was admitted. This gave me an insight into the preparations for the festival. The stages were being set up, the vendors were arriving and setting up their booths, and the multitude of volunteers were having training meetings for their various roles. The stage crew worked until 4 am Friday to ensure everything was in place and working correctly for the festival commencement at noon on Friday. I had been checking the weather forecast

for a couple of weeks to see what temperatures to expect. Two weeks before, temperatures were predicted to be in the 60s F, but then it changed to the 80s F, which sounded perfect. Nothing prepared us for temperatures that reached the 100s F.

The unexpected and extreme weather conditions, with temperatures averaging high 90s F to low 100s F, were definitely challenging and added a unique element to the festival experience. Friday dawned extremely early, with a very loud “Happy Reggae” blasting out over the site. I did become used to it and slept through it after the first morning. The public started arriving at 10 a.m. It was exciting and inspiring to watch streams of excited Reggae fans, and their families pour past my tent site, towing wagons, strollers, and children of all ages, heading to the main gate

The festival commenced with a Native American prayer and dance, a tradition of Reggae On The River, and the festivities began. Three stages were set up: the Main Stage, the Positive Stage, and the River Stage. On Friday, the performing artists on the different stages were staggered with DJs playing between acts, so there was time to go from one stage to another without missing the artists performing on any stage. There were performances by artists like Chuck Fenda, who thrilled us with a stellar performance, especially when he performed from the stage scaffolding. Continued on page 24

Continued from page 23

Day two dawned bright and early. When camping at a festival, porta-potties become incredibly important. As seasoned festival campers have realized, hanging on until the porta-potty company has done its morning clean makes for a more pleasant experience. High five to the porta-potty company, which came several times daily and did its best to keep them clean. This was important to me as I was camped opposite a set of porta-potties. The festival provided a shower block; although small, this was a welcome addition, especially as it was so hot. By Saturday, weekend campers had made friends with their neighbors, and little families were formed with folks sharing and helping each other out. One of the most popular vendors of the weekend was the ice vendor, and columns of ice-carrying mums, dads, and kids were seen every morning making their way back to their campsite. The festival atmosphere was filled with a sense of camaraderie and shared experience, making it a truly unique event.

In 1977, they performed at President Jimmy Carter’s Inaugural Ball and since then have received their share of platinum and gold singles, albums, and other industry kudos; most notably a 1980 Grammy for “Shining Star” written and produced by Paul Richmond & Leo GrahamIn 1985, THE MANHATTANS, wanting to enhance their show by adding a female vocalist to the act, chose Regina Belle after being introduced to her by legendary New York dj Vaughn Harper. Spending two years touring with THE MANHATTANS, she appeared on the Bobby Womack-produced single, “Where Did We Go Wrong” (a duet with Gerald Alston). She also contributed to The Manhattans 1986 Columbia Records album, “Back To Basics”. A year later she was signed to the label as a solo artist.

After 16 years with Columbia Records, lead singer Gerald Alston took his turn as a solo artist with Motown Records; while Blue Lovett, due to doctor’s concerns regarding his health, decided to turn his attention towards producing and grooming new artists. The late 1980’s found THE MANHATTANS pursuing individual interests within the industry.

The second day of performances, in my opinion, didn’t flow quite as well between the stages. The artists performing weren’t staggered as they had been on Friday, so it took some planning to see all your favorites. The lineup for Saturday was packed with artists like Lutan Fyah, Konshens, Lila Ike, Chezidek, DeMarco, Isi Dube, and newcomer Jamaica’s female artist Tuff Like Iron, to name a few. It was refreshing to see the unity between young West Coast artists such as Arkaingelle, Yungg Trip, Jahdon Blakkamore, and local Sound Systems, who introduced us to new artists by allowing them a guest appearance on their set. The highlight of the day was the highly anticipated appearance of the legend Capleton with a magnetic performance that closed out the main stage. This was not the end for festival-goers, though. If you had enough stamina, the Kings Of The Earth Soundclash was scheduled, featuring Dynamq from South Sudan, Renaissance from Jamaica, and Heavy Hammer from Italy. This took place on the River Stage and started after the Main Stage closed for the night. Some people did not fully understand this staple of Jamaican culture and were disappointed that they couldn’t dance, but for those aficionados of sound clashes, a good time was had.

In 1993, all that changed. With their 30th anniversary approaching in 1994, it was the perfect time to reunite. So, along with new members Troy May and David Tyson, a reunion tour was born.

On February 25, 1999 THE MANHATTANS were inducted into the Rhythm and Blues Hall of Fame.

In 2003, THE MANHATTANS released their first studio album in fifteen years featuring the beautiful ballad “Turn Out The Stars” which became one of the year’s best songs. On December 9, 2014 Winfred “Blue” Lovett passed away.

On August 15, 2018, THE MANHATTANS will celebrate their 56th anniversary.

On The Love & Harmony Reggar cruise 2019, RED INK Magazine had the pleasure of interviewing Mr. Gerald Alston of The Manhattans. He’s a classy and an extremely humble human being. It was truly a pleasure meeting this great singer.

RED INK: With the love that Jamaica has for you and the love that you have for Jamaica, you must love performing there; how long has it been since your last Jamaica concert?

GA: Two years ago in Kingston for the Startime Concert.

(It was the biggest venue in the 29 year history of Startime, it was held in the National Arena. Gerald Alston made a personal tribute to deceased Manhattans co-founder Winfred “Blue” Lovett, at the performance.)

Sunday morning likely arrived a bit too soon for those who partied through the sound clash, with the Positive Stage and River Stage kicking off at 10:30 a.m.

RED INK : Will you be returning soon to Jamaica?

GA: Yes. The Manhattans used to do an annual Mother’s Day concert in the Montego Bay / Kingston area. And he would like to start that tra- dition back again.

Thankfully, the Main Stage offered a gentler start time at 1:30 p.m. But the wait was well worth it.

Sunday’s lineup delivered a spectacular finale to an unforgettable weekend, featuring an array of talent that electrified the crowd. Performances by Bobby Hustle, Iba Mahr, the legendary Sister Nancy, and the iconic "Ganja Farmer" Marlon Asher, set the tone. JBoog, the high-energy Soul Ska Band, and Soul Medic, to name a few, with an assortment of DJs and Sound Systems keeping the vibe alive. The weekend reached its pinnacle with Collie Buddz, who had the entire crowd singing along to his classic ganja anthems. For those still eager to dance, the festivities continued at the after-party with Ashanti Hi-Fi and King Addies, followed by surprise guest DJs that kept the energy soaring well into the night.

Overall, the triumphant return of Reggae On The River was nothing short of spectacular. While a few fans raised eyebrows at seeing artists of Chezidek

and Perfect Giddimani's caliber performing on smaller stages instead of the Main Stage, this may be a hint at what’s to come for Reggae On The River 2025. Some disappointment lingered among Skarra Mucci's fans when his visa issues prevented him from making the festival, but such hurdles are beyond the control of both the event organizers and the artist.

The festival offered a rich tapestry of experiences, with a diverse selection of vendors selling everything from clothing and art to food and drinks. Families enjoyed a dedicated children’s zone, while the Cannabis Area highlighted local growers and sponsors, even offering tours of the surrounding cannabis industries for the curious.

Reggae On The River still stands as a true multi-generational festival, celebrating the spirit of reggae and bringing together fans of all ages.

(Feb 19 - Mar 20)

September will bring Aries a lot of courage and energy to their life. Since you will not worry about anything during this period, everything will go smoothly. Even conflicts at work won't bother you; on the contrary, at least you can practise diplomatic problem-solving.

In September, Taurus will lock away, and they will start to think about their lives. When it comes to personal life, you will find yourself in many situations where you will have to make crucial decisions. You may feel physically tired, but in reality, it will be caused by excessive thinking and drowning in depression and insecurity.

In September, Gemini will face a lot of stress. Many duties will pile up, and you will get into a hustle when you no longer enjoy anything. Therefore, you better not unnecessarily embark on mentally demanding activities during this period, and you rather plan a weekend in wellness or nature with your friends.

September will be the month when Cancer will feel the need to be in contact with someone, either with their close friends or with their partner. You will long for a hug, closeness and reassurance that you are being loved. However, this need should not engulf you, and you should rather work on self-love.

September and the upcoming beginning of the school year will be very calm for Leo. During this month, you will reveal a musical talent that you should definitely start developing. Try to enrol in a music course, such as singing or playing a musical instrument; you will broaden your horizons and satisfy your creative spirit.

In September, parental instincts will awaken in Virgo. You will want to spend time with your children, who will be very happy and you will have a lot of fun together. If you don't have children, it would be a shame not to use this mood, so offer babysitting help to your friends, who will certainly appreciate it.

September will be an energetic month for Libra. You will feel the need to change the home environment; hence you will embark on the reconstruction of the apartment with great enthusiasm, or you will at least do a big clean, which you have been planning for a long time.

In September, Scorpios will be led astray, especially in your love life. It is because you will meet someone who will provoke a wave of hormones in you, and those of you who are currently in a partnership might be fighting the idea of cheating on your partner. This will bring out the question of whether you are actually happy in your current relationship or not.

In September, Sagittarians will shine in a few areas of their lives, especially in their sport activities. You will be able to use your potential mainly in group activities, for example, volleyball is a good choice for you. Try to find a free weekend, organise an afternoon with your friends and play some ball games together.

During September, a lot of work and duties will pile up. At the beginning of the month, inattention will take over. Your time management will be quite poor, and you will not manage to do most things you plan. It is about time to start thinking about your effectiveness and priorities because you will start losing track of what you actually want.

Aquarians should prepare themselves for many changes in their private lives in September. You will be very volatile this month, and you will find yourself in a phase of searching for sexual satisfaction. But be careful not to hurt anyone because you will have tendencies to do it. Regarding your partnership, you will not meet anyone for a serious relationship this month.

The weather changes and the number of duties will negatively influence you, and you will feel stressed; you might even tend to go into some depressive states. Pisces' task for this month is to reach mental harmony and to care about their health and a good quality diet. This could prevent you from some digestive issues which you will be prone to this month.
