P. STAR YEAR OLD RAPPER
by Kenneth C. Randall
A
s the E.A.R.S. Talent Showcase & Music Conference ended, there was an abundance of talent in attendance. E.A.R.S. which stands for Emerging Artist Reaching For Stardom brought together unsigned artist and giants in their perspective fields in the Music Industry. One star shined so bright that I had to ask "who is this?" Her name is P-Star. A nine year old ball of dynamite who's doing it all. An 'A' student in school, entering and winning beauty pageants, and concentrating on a career as a rapper. "What else can't this bundle of high octane of energy do?" Her presentation and demeanor was so awesome at this early age, that her destiny can only be stardom. Accompanied by her Father/ Manager she gave a small taste of what will become a successful career as a rapper. Poised, articulate and everready to "spit fire" as she put it. Her lyrics are fresh and her priorities are in order, thanks to her Father. A single parent of two beautiful girls. He explains," No matter how great she gets, it's education first. There is an old saying 'Dynamite come in small packages' and. she is definitely dynamite to see. We also had a chance to sit with P-Star in a one on one Q. & A. session. Q. Where are you from? (Nationally) A. "I was born in New York City and my parents are Cuban+ Puerto Rican, so I'm considered a Hispanic". Q. At what age did you start performing and when did you decide to become a Professional Rapper? A. "It's been 1 year since I became a Professional Rapper and at the age of 8 years old is when I started to perform". Q. Who inspired you to become a Rapper? A. "My father, because he used to be in the Music Business and stopped his career to raise two beautiful girls and become a single parent. He's my Mommy + Daddy and I want to fulfill the dream he couldn't fulfill. Q. What are some of your trainings? A. "Some of my training was going to acting school which is called City Light Youth Theater. I have been there for 3 years. I also go to Jo Lee Dance and Performing Art School. At that school I study Ballet, Tap, Modern, and African. It helps me with my appearance andmy performance on stage". Q. How often do you perform on stage? A." At least 2 or 3 times a week." Q. Tell us some of your techniques? A. "My techniques I use are basically simple. My Dad shows me how to use the Mic while rapping and how to get the crowd jumping and how to
5
have fun. That's why I love doing this." Q. Any special artist you would like to record/ perform with? A. "Yes, Lil Kim, Fat Joe, Ja Rule, Fifty Cents, and of course P- Diddy. As a matter of fact all rappers. I want to be the first young lady to rap with these top Dogs. Q. Being a very young female rapper, please provide us with some pros and cons in this business? A. "The good thing is that I enjoy Rapping. I like what I do, but it's a lot of hard work. I have to sacrifice a lot of my time. Going to clubs at night and getting up early the next day to go to school is very tuff. I also go to dance school on Saturday's and I go to Church on Sunday's. So I never have time to play my friends. This is what it takes to make it in the industry. I must have good grades in school to continue rapping or my career is over. So school comes first then my career." Q. Where do you perform? (Locally or Internationally) A. "I perform at Club Speed, Clemente in Harlem, and The Downtime Club." Q. What can we expect from you in the future? A. "I'm working in the studio. My goals are to be The Hottest Young
Rapper in the world. I also want to be an Actress and a model." Q. P-Star please feel free to give any additional info that you may find interesting for your article? A. "As you know I won a lot of Beauty Pageants and the finals will be in April. I just won The Little Miss New York Pageant on Saturday November 20th at the Ramada Inn at JFK airport. I also just fin-
ish doing a Film called 'Sista'. It's a short film it will be out in May. I'm also a part of a group called 'Teamster' with Bugz who worked with Cam 'ron + Dipset. I am also on a DVD called "Sizzurp Vol 1" and another DVD called "What's Really Hood Vol 4" out in December, so check me out. I'm doing a Hot 97 Remix that will be on my C.D. One more thing 2 people I got to thank. My Dad, + My friend David a.k.a. Sin, Who show me how to rap. u

In the video Lady Saw is the proprietor of a restaurant and modern day all female speakeasy (bar lounge) that helps men relieve the stress from their busy work day. The dancehall diva is seen in the daytime as an average business woman driving around in her BMW 760. When she arrives at her restaurant (a front for the speakeasy) she greets her guests and thanks them for their patronage. However, when she makes her way through the kitchen to the back, we see how the establishment makes the real money. The video should be hitting the airwaves in the next couple of weeks, so be on the lookout! ua

on Black Aesthetics This solo exhibition represents the culmination of five years of work by the acclaimed Chicago-based artist Kerry J a m e s Marshall. He is known primarily for his monumental paintings of AfricanAmerican subjects based on the traditional genre of narrative history p a i n t i n g . Marshall will present over 30 works in all media including sculpture, installation, photography, video and printmaking. The newest body of work, "One True Thing," simultaneously pays homage to and critiques the notion of a Black aesthetic. Stemming in part from Marshall's recent comic strip, Rhythm Mastr (2000) -in which an urban superhero battles the forces of evil using a combination of futuristic and traditional African accoutrements-Marshall amplifies and extends the references to embrace a wider range of media and multiple readings of Black imagery. As the titles and subtitles suggest, these works seek to raise intriguing and often confounding questions about the role of the artist and the institution in defining positions in artistic practice. tyle, wit, grace, intelligence, creativity and a flare for controversy are all key components for a budding diva. Add a bit of sexiness, lethal body and a stunning smile along with a large measure of talent and you've just defined the allure of Ce'CileDance Hall Diva on the rise. Ce'Cile takes up for women where accomplished artist like Lady Saw and Tanya Stephens leaves off. Boldly demanding that men "Do It To Me". This eye candy knows how to get her point across and isn't afraid of the backlash adherent to pro-femine declarations. This self proclaimed 'Bad Gyal' has kept people guessing and tongue's wagging since first captivating the Dance hall scene with the shockingly refreshing and thought provoking smash "Changez" which was designed as a marketing ploy by poking fun at her male counterparts and succeeding in propelling her into the limelight. Ce'Cile's polished sultry sound has been widely recognized as she was recruited to perform Mya's verses with Beenie Man at the BET Harlem Block Party 2001. And with the host of award nominations that she has received over the years which includes capturing accolades for The Irie Jam Radio Awards, Jamaican Federation Of Musicians and Martins International Reggae Music Awards just Coming Soon !!! to name a few. REIGN OF ape lton FIRE
S
panning a career of almost 2 decades the fireman has continued to burn up the charts, as well as Babylon. Born Clifton Bailey III on April 13th, 1967,in the rural parish of St. Mary Jamaica W.I., Capelton earned his future stage name from his friends who were so impressed by his sharp wit as well as reasoning skills, that they named him after the most famous lawyer in town. As a youth, he was very fond of traveling sound sets. So much so, that he used to sneak out at night just to catch the vibes until dawn. But it wasn't until moving to Kingston at the age of 18 would he realize his lyrical destiny. It was Stewart Brown, owner of a Toronto based sound called African Star, gave the untested artist his first big break, flying him to Canada for a stage show alongside then and still, giants of the game Ninjaman and Flourgon. The audience received him openly, and he has never looked back since. In a time when slackness and guntalk were the order of the day, this newcomer burst onto the scene with not just one, but a long line of hits from "Bumbo Red" to Alms house" which coincidentally established him as not only a force, but a beacon of righteousness through the medium he chose to convey his message-music."Dis the Trinity" 1994 was even more evidence that something other than just music was happening in this young artist's life. Something happened, revelation of sorts," I was lost, but now I'm found, Selassie I live every time". It was at this time, that Capelton became a very strong advocate of the teachings of Jamaica national hero Marcus Mosiah Garvey, founder of the Universal Negro Improvement Association and advocate of black repatriation. After this came the song "Tour", this song was written in the weeks following the slayings of fellow Dirtsman and Panhead. This wake up call to the dancehall not only became the anthem of the roots revival, but a hiphop remix of it hit the billboard charts and opened up a huge new audience to Capelton's messages of righteousness. Soon after, Defjam Records released two Capelton albums, "Prophecy" and "I Testament", which featured calabos with rapstars like Methodman and Q-tip.But he knew that he had to be himself and return to what he felt he was sent to do-spread the message of Jah's love to everyone who has ears to hear. In 1990 and 2000, Capelton gave us hits that spoke to us but publicly addressed the situation at hand. "Jah Jah City" did just that. It quickly became the antiviolence anthem of the time, and then again with "Good Ina Her Clothes", a message of respect for sisters who continue to carry themselves like Empresses rather than. Since his last Grammy nominated effort "Still Bazing", Capelton has been doing just that. His most recent contributions to music include "In Her Heart ", Turn It Up", Dash a Fire" and "Consuming",-currently melting down the # 1 spot on the charts in Jamaica. I recently had the pleasure of being granted a sit down with the prophet check it out. 2: Let's get down to it. What's your given name and how old are you? C: I'm 37 years old, and my name is Cliffton Bailey, my pet name is Steve. 2: Any kids? C: Yeah sons and daughters different age groups.
2: When did you start singing and what was your inspiration? C: You know, I would have to say that I've been inspired from the womb, you know, I been musically inclined from birth. The system weh me grow up in ah inspire me also cause me grow up kinda rough. Me ah grow up pon de plantation wit de slave masters so I experience slavery first hand not only mentally, but physically-me work. The injustice and inequality and manipulation ah nuff othah things which surround life in terms of systematical events such as how de sky ah move round, people in general, movin around and going in different directions, motivate I to write the right kind of song fi de road. 2: What else moves you? C: It's what ever I see in front of my eyes, because when you listen to my songs, I want you to see what I'm talking about. 2: What was your first release? C: "Bumbo Red" , that's when me tell them loot have fi spread. 2: How many since then? C: More than 500, that are still being played no care how old they are, because it have a message-preserve life 2: Man, I'm still trying to get over that figure, 500 songs? How many collaborations with other artists? C: Crazy amounts. 2: What's next for Capelton besides the "Reign of Fire"? C: Well right now I'm working on my label, Davidhouse. This is my contribution to this business. We have a whole heap ah youth that needs to be heard. Out of the mouth of the babe and suckling, do ordain strength and a child shall lead the way. That's why we have to show them and grow them. 2: What do you mean by burn them with fire? C: As for the fire people shouldn't even get it confused, because most people when they think of fire, it's on a destructive level but it isn't. The fire is for the cleansing and purification of humanity. For people to see themselves for what they are so that they know where they are coming from so that in turn they know where they are going. It's not a literal fire, but a lyrical fire. Steer away from injustice and inequality, death without life, self awareness, self thought, self alliance, self control, because the fire come through word, sound and levity it's just the power of the most high. It's not just me that power lives within us all. You can't go and look for God in outer space when he is right here, what you have to do is find God within first. As for the fire, on a biological level fire is the ultimate force. Without fire there is no life there is no birth
the earth itself emerge from the equator, or the creator. The sun is the hottest element to rise us without the sun there is no rain, plants can't grow there would be no energy for humanity. Biblically, Sheadrach Misha Anabendigo walked through the fire and never get burned, Moses saw Jah in a burning bush. Fire is the ultimate force. And the prophet say so. 2: Anything you want to tell the kids them before we go? C: I want the kids to know that they mustn't worry about obstacles and stumbling blocks, you must be educated and reeducated don't let nobody tell you can't make it, and don't forget to pick up your copy of the cd it's what you need to hear. 2: Alright brother, give thanks it has been a pleasure. C: Blessed love. u By Sheldon Riley aka 2wist 11

AMAZURA FIRE INA DE CITY
W
h a t would y o u say if I t o l d you that on October 24th there was a fire in Queens? Better yet , what if I told you that Lionheart Promotion / Davidhouse, and VP Receords as well as Royal Supreme were largely responsible for this seemingly u n i m a g i n a b l e occourrance.Fear not, though it was not a physical fire ,there was a Fire Ina De City on that quiet Sunday night . But don't get it in reverse just because I said it was not a physical fire does not mean that there was nothing damaged .You see, there were some casualties that night - and I can't say that I felt any remorse because it was the thoughts, words, and deeds of the wicked and unjust that were put on ultra high scorch ,and then consumed by these lyrical flames that leapt from the stage and filled the entire venue most commonly referred to as Amazura . For at this moment in time ,it felt as though you could actually see the ashes of slavery, oppression ,and ignorance of self being blown right out the front door past incoming patrons eager to take part in musical "bun down" of iniquity in this second Sodom we call "aforiegn". Outside as these very surrealistic ashes dissipate, the anxious to get in got even more so, because past those big doors melodic justice was being served . I warn you readers ,if you are truly fond of "musication" but are faint of heart , you might want to skip the next few lines because that's where I get to tell you who was there - especially if you hadn't been .But seriously, if you weren't in the building on the 24th of October, you weren't anywhere. Oh yeah ,try not to kick yourself until I'm finished ok? Because on this night , under one roof , the all-star lineup went as follows: Natty King, the everpowerfull Empress Isis , Jesse Jendah , Japanese singing sensation Rika Kaho , and I Wayne performing his hit "One Man Can't Satisfy Her". Had enough ? Well I'm not done yet .Also in the building was Cocoa Tea , Donovan Donovan ,Kienie , Doogle Doogle, and ripping from his brand new cd "Cut It Out", the multifaceted Major Key alongside the lovely lady Kendra .But the icing on the cake ,or should I say verbal gasoline brought in to spread this cleansing fire is a man that needs no introduction . I'm talking about the Prophet, the fireman himself, CAPELTON ! And with enlisting youth and experience by way of The New Kingston and Prophecy bands ,Amazura was on fire indeed. As if that wasn't enough , the music was provided by Massive B ,Lion King , Father Bentley ,and none other than KING AGONY. Too good to be true? You betchya . Because due to time restrictions, a few of the artists did not get to perform. Among them were Jesse Jendah ,Cocoa Tea ,Junior Demos ,Kienie , and Lepracaun. But that was not as sobering
as Capelton being 3/4ths through his set and the lights being cut on while the place is still on high heat .Me wanting to know more about the situation ,I tracked down Lion from Lionheart Promotions, and this is what he had to say about that otherwise inspirational night . 2: Lion ,I know you are a very busy man but thanks for giving me your time . What's up my man? L: Yes REDINK A more life ana more blessing ya seen ah Lionheart dis and ya done know it was nice and please of unno to be inside of club Amazura this past 2 weeks and I would have to say that it was a pleasure to have unno to be there so I really appreciate that. To show we are a nice people it was a good turnout , and is only one problem we did really have - the stage manager never there so me did have a problem wit dat seen . 2:I want to get right back to that in a second, but right now I what is your direct and or indirect connection with reggae, because you put on some killer shows and you have been doing that for a while huh ? L: Well you know se mi a directly relate to de prophet, ya done know Davidhouse from grassroot know weh mi ah say ? It all started when I keep a birthday party for my second son , Jamar in Jamaica in '94 , the whole thing was roadblock , then I migrate to the U.S. and keep it going from there .I would have to go into mi catalog to tell you how much dance me keep because it too much from American Legion in Freeport to Jamrock, to Q club to Amazura . Music ah mi backbone. 2: What's next for Lionheart Promotions , more righteousness or what ? L:Whole heap ah righteousness fi Lionheart Promotions ya done know David house always there fi me Capelton , the whole Davidhouse fraternity I have something planned for the people ,true dem never get to see Cocoa Tea perform, mi wan do something f idem . Just wah get things back pon track . 2: That's peace but also a very tall order , but as always I'm quite if noone else can pull it off Lionheart can. Anything else before we go? L: Yeah, me wan give thanks to de most high Jah Rastafari , man like Bob Marley, Denni Brown, De Prophet-Capelton, and man like Luciano a dem have it right now. Also me wah bless up de whole ah New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Philly, de whole universe a Lionheart say dat . FORTUNE F A M E HITTING THE HIP HOP SCENE BY STORM

This young dynamic 22 year old rapper hailing from Staten Island, New York is without a doubt a passionate lyricist whose colorful tracks will keep you involved from beginning to end. Her ability to set her songs within realistic parameters and express her lyrics with genuine emotions will captivate and entrance you. This well rounded artist's unique usage of elaborate word play wrapped in dramatic storytelling is enhanced be tracks that compliment her style, putting her into a league of here own. Influenced to rhyme by a high school class mate back in 95, Fame quickly took to the art form and won 1st place in BMG'S "World Of Expression Scholarship Contest" four years later in 1999. In 2000 Fame was motivated by close friends to compose her own tracks thus enabling her to express the greater dimension of her creativity. Recently, Fame has been selected as a nominee for "Most Promising Female Artist" in the Underground Music Awards. Fame started Showcasing earlier this year and her venues includes The Orange Bear, Alphabet Lounge, Club Decade, Nightingale Lounge, Babalu's, Soul CafĂŠ, Club Pyramid, Club Speed, and Club Downtime. Recently, I had the privilege of seeing Fame Fortune perform at Club Downtime and afterward this vivacious, talented, and very intelligent young lady took time out for a Q.& A. session, though she is very busy person these days but not too busy for her fans or our readers. Q. With all of the accolades that you are receiving, which accolade
would be the most important one that you could ever receive? A. "I would have to say the love and appreciation of my music. My drive to be in the music industry is from my love of making music. So, for someone to tell me that they like my material that's all the praise I need". Q. How do you keep your world so down to earth in such a demanding business? A. "You have to be down to earth in a business that's inundated with talent trying to score a deal. There are so many trying to get into this industry and to think that someone will deal with your stuck-up attitude because you are so hot over someone who is humble is arrogant". Q. What words of encouragement could you give to our readers especially young women who are trying to break into this business? A. "Remember that this is a business and to keep a business mind frame. Yes, it's cool that you rap, sing or whatever your talent maybe but if you don't know anything pass your talent you are in a
whole lot of trouble. Educate yourself about the business. By educate I mean read. Don't be afraid to open a book and research". Q. What are some of your current projects that you are working on? And when will they be released? A. "Right now I'm working on my mix tapes titled "You Made It A Hot Line, I Made It A Hot Song" expected to be out mid December. Ask Dr. G ? LADIES: GET THE FACTS
M
y last article discussed the shortcomings of assuming that everything itchy is yeast because it is not. The truth is that over the past 5 or 6 years I have noticed less and less of the vaginal infections are yeast infections (I closely evaluate under a microscope to avoid guesswork). A far greater number of women, of those who have actual infections, suffer from Bacterial Vaginosis, aka "BV". It has been generally accepted that BV stems from auto-infection from one's own anal-rectal bacteria (generally Gardnerella sp., in case you were curious). This occurs when the bacteria that sits in the intestine (the "good" bacteria associated with digestion, which balances the body's yeast and pH) arrives by self-inoculation to one's vagina. Symptoms range from a pungent "fishy" odor associated with a creamy yellow, grey, or off-white discharge to dryness, burning, and itching. This is frequently worsened after intercourse (especially if semen enters the vagina) and often intercourse is uncomfortable, painful, or causes a burning sensation. Though this may be exacerbated by sexual intercourse, it is not as much a sexually transmitted disease (STD) as it is a self-acquired infection occasionally worsened by sex.
20
Since the bacteria emanates from a woman's anus, and if then during foreplay the anus is rubbed with something that also touches the vagina, bacteria will enter, and may lead to the overgrowth that starts this infective process. For this reason, some doctors will include this in the list of those diseases acquired sexually. (I avoided calling it anal intercourse, because the point is that it takes less than penetration to create the infection.) Bacteria grows where it is warm and wet, and will do so more readily if the body and vagina are less healthy. So besides eating well and staying fit, avoiding STD's which can break down local barriers to infection is a very important concept (a lecture for another time). Wiping properly is not enough, because after a long day where sweat and oils build up and create an environment conducive to bacteria, it is imperative that the buttocks and vagina are kept free of leftover tissue and small amounts of stool (solved by using a scent-free baby wipe after using the toilet). Tampons and pads need to be changed frequently. Thong panties cannot be worn - that's right I said it, and I'll reemphasize - use loose cotton panties (use boy shorts if panty lines are your nemesis) and NEVER wear thong panties - those are the culprits in over 90% of cases of BV in my patients! Think about it, you know not to wipe from back to front, but the thong is doing that all day. Every time you bend or take a step, while you sit all day building up sweat and moisture, the underwear holds it in exactly where you wish to avoid. Douching is out! Never do it - end of story. It absolutely causes BV, and does the opposite of the cleaning. BV can be avoided by maintaining hygiene and dryness (some women need to wear a panty liner and change it frequently), avoiding all acts that would bring bacteria from the anus forward, and staying free from sexually spread infections. If you think you have an infection, see your gynecologist; but the above ideas o prevention may just keep you out of the gyn office. u By Dr. Gary Greenstein M.D.

iabetes is characterized as an inefficient use of glucose (or sugar) by the body. A diabetics profile exhibits large range of blood sugar levels throughout the day. Having huge ups and downs in blood sugar throughout the day can spell disaster in terms of your health. The fact is that sugar in your bloodstream can be toxic for your blood vessels, especially the small ones. The longer that sugar stays in your bloodstream the more damage can be done. In a normal individual insulin acts as a vacuum to carry sugar out of the bloodstream and into the cells where it belongs. Those with diabetes have complications with this system. Diabetes can be diagnosed with a simple blood test. There are certain groups that are at an increased risk for developing diabetes. Such groups include people that are: -Predisposed through family history -Overweight -Hispanic or African-American decent -Women who have delivered a baby more than 9 pounds Those that are predisposed to developing diabetes should start being screened at the age of 30. Here are some key terms that would be helpful when trying to understand what diabetes is. -Pre-diabetes, also known as impaired fasting glucose, is a term to describe the condition for people with higher than normal blood sugar, but are not diagnosed with having diabetes. 40% of this group is most likely to develop diabetes in 5 years. To delay or prevent the onset of the disease one should adopt a healthy diet and lifestyle, have an exercise plan, and maintain a healthy weight. Pre-diabetics should learn of what they can do to reduce blood sugar, because even a little high blood sugar can do damage to the body. -Type 1 diabetes is a condition in which the body has stopped making its own insulin. The treatment for type 1 diabetics is a lifetime commitment to test-

Contd........Diabetes Basics -Type 2 diabetes characteristics are insulin resistance and insulin deficiency. With insulin resistance, your muscles and fat cells do not recognize insulin as the key that allows sugar to move out of the bloodstream and into the cell. Insulin deficiency occurs when your body cannot make as much insulin as needed. Obesity can reduce the life expectancy of diabetic patients by up to eight years. It is the excess weight that contributes to insulin resistance. In type 2 diabetics, diet, exercise and weight loss are the key to reducing insulin resistance and getting off insulin therapy. Some symptoms of high blood sugar are, fatigue, thirst, hunger, and blurred vision. For prolonged high blood sugar the consequences are far more severe. When the insulin hormone does not work properly, the sugar levels in the blood can cause much damage to the body thus leading to complications. Some conditions are:
- Eye damage and blindness - Numbness or tingling in the feet, hands, or legs - Heart and blood vessel problems - Wounds that won't heal - Kidney problems - Problems with sexual relations Many foods contain carbohydrate which is the main culprit that can raise your blood sugar. All starch foods, most milk products,
sugar contribute carbohydrate to your diet and will raise your blood sugar. The best way to keep these complications from developing is to maintain a blood sugar goal within the following limits:
- Blood sugar before meals of 80 - 120 - 1-2 hours after a meal of 100- 180 - Pre-diabetes fasting blood sugar between 100 - 110 - Before bedtime, 100 - 140 - A1C less than 7% (test that averages blood sugar over the past 3-4 months)
How can I keep my blood glucose at a healthy level? - Eat about the same amount of food each day - Eat your meals and snacks about the same times each day - Do not skip meals - Take your medicines at the same time each day - Exercise at about the same times each day "Keeping your body on a schedule is key" u For info. or questions about article, please send email REDINK@REDGRAFIX.COM Attention: Fazia

SPORTS Ramnaresh Ronnie Sarwan WEST INDIES CRICKETER nimble, Chaplinesque right-hander, Ramnaresh Sarwan was brought up in the South American rainforest around the Essequibo River. After his first Test innings, 84 not out against Pakistan, Ted Dexter was moved to predict a Test average of more than 50 - an unfair millstone to hang around any young player's neck. But on his first tour, to England in 2000, Sarwan lived up to the hype by topping the averages. His footwork, which seemed to require no early trigger movements, was strikingly confident and precise. It was a surprise when he then produced a horror run of three runs in five innings in Australia, but against India in 200102 he was back to his composed best. Sarwan, who took over as Brian Lara's vice-captain in March 2003, required 28 matches and 49 innings to post his maiden Test century, 119 in December 2002 - and even then it came against the less-than-mighty Bangladeshis. But, as the likes of Graham Gooch and Steve Waugh can testify, the first time is often the hardest, and since then, his batting has achieved a greater level of consistency. A dream series against South Africa in 2003-04, where he averaged nearly a 100 runs a Test, was followed by a lean run against England. But he battled on, and returned to form in a stunning manner with an unbeaten 261 against Bangladesh in June. Then came the England tour in 2004 where he began and ended the tour on a low note, but was prolific in the middle. While West Indies stumbled from one defeat into the next, the calls for Lara to step down got louder and louder, but who would take over? Ramnaresh Sarwan, came the almost unanimous answer. u

A TRIBUTE TO THE HIP HOP WORLD REMEMBERING
ODB

ou know, just when you think that finally coming to terms with the last announcement of someone in the music business. Then realizing, that in this life there is one inevitable constant-death. "Damn, who's next" is the first reaction. I know that's what my reaction was when I got the word of what had transpired. First Big L, Pac, Biggie, Freaky Tah, Lisa Lopez, Aaliyah, Jam Master Jay, even Ray Charles and now, ODB. Born Russel Jones on November 13,th 1968. ODB was no stranger to the occasional running with the law, coming up on the streets of Staten Island. But as a founding member of the ground breaking Staten Island rap group The Wutang Clan, that exploded on the scene in 1993, that occasional running became public knowledge. After the hit album "Enter The Wu-Tang, 36 Chambers" became as notorious for his erratic behavior as his innovate hip hop style with hits like "Shimmy Shimmy Ya" even he and Mariah went back like babies with pacifiers, then Brooklyn Zoo and Baby I got You Money. He had been shot at least twice, fathered at least 15 children with several women, and drew national attention when he rushed on stage at the Grammy Awards to riff when he didn't win. He was even charged with attempted murder, shoplifting and possession of drugs, he also spent some time on the run before being arrested in a McDonalds parking lot in 1999. But what can you say, that was Big Baby Jesus aka Osiris aka Dirt Mcgirt, that's who he was. Ol Dirty collapsed on the floor of 36 records LLC just two days short of his 36th birthday. He was pronounced dead at 5:04 pm officials said. "This is no joke! This is real life just like you lose your mother or brother. This is a huge loss" said Ghost Face Killah who also said that ODB complained to others of chest pain. "But I guess he's with the father now. He's in good hands" He spent most of his last afternoon in studio, where the 911 call was made at 4:45 pm. The paramedics on the scene could not revive him.
After being released from jail in 2003, ODB had vowed to clean up his act, and was too. He had been in the studio preparing a comeback album for RockaFella Records. No matter what we dare say about him or not, his success or short comings, a shining star faded on November 13,th 2004, and that shining star was Ol'Dirty Bastard. You'll be greatly missed, but will also live on in our hearts and mind. Rest In peace! u By Sheldon Riley aka 2wist 24

Laura Johnson W RITEROF “A SOLDIER’S HEART” GET TO KNOW
by Kenneth C. Randall
L
aura Johnson was born and raised in Kingston, Jamaica. Shortly after, Laura and her family moved to the United States in 1988 where she later attended ST Leo University. After earning her degree she then enlisted in the United States Army where she began to travel all over the world and is currently home on leave while being stationed in Iraq. Writing has always been an important peace of her life. While stationed in Iraq she was inspired to complete her dream of writing her first book. As a student in college she studied psychology, which allowed her to understand people and the world around her. As her latest assignment took her to Iraq, it was there she became inspired to fulfill her life long dream of writing a book. "A Soldier's Heart" was fully conceived in Iraq when Laura understood just how precious life was, when she realized her and her comrades could be killed at any given time. It was this realization that gave her that extra boost to fulfill her dream of being an author. Recently Ms. Johnson and I were able to meet over the phone for a very nice and informative Q. & A. session. Q. Can you tell me what was it like coming to the United States from Jamaica? A. Coming to America from Jamaica was like a dream come true. Growing up in Jamaica a lot of people think America has a pot of gold waiting on us. I came here when I was eleven so I was fairly young. But I remember it like it was yesterday. I had on a peach dress with my hair in cornrolls ready to board the plane of hope and dreams. Q. How old were you when you started to take your writing serious? A. I have been writing since I was very young, it was not until I went to Iraq that I started taking it real serious.
Q. Who or what was your inspiration in becoming a soldier/ writer? A. I decided to become a soldier because I wanted to do something different, the recruiter who recruited me in west Philadelphia inspired me. I was inspired to become a writer because I felt like I had a story to tell. I felt like if I survived Iraq and came out an author it would be such a rewarding accomplishment, and so far it is Q. Tell me about the live poetry reading in Kuwait? A. I did a couple live poetry reading in Iraq and the troops loved it. It was something different for them and it took their mind from the war while enjoying spoken words. Q. About your first book 'A Soldier's Heart' wonderfully written, how were you able to concentrate on its completion in the mist of such a dangerous time and place in your life? A. I was able to concentrate on writing my book in Iraq because writing was my salvation, it was my bullets. When I wrote words that came together to carry a different emotion every time that was healing for me. Q. For artist's who would like to publish their memoirs into artist's who would like to publish their memoirs into books, what words of encouragement could you give? A. As far as encouragement goes you have to be serious and dedicated. Take the time to do some research and have a plan established. Believe in yourself and your work, and lastly if I can write a book in war you can write a book anywhere with faith.. u To order Laura’a Book go to www.lyricalsoldier.com

Caffeine – Aided Beauty FA SSHEIEO NW?HCAOT R’ SN EIRN S T Y L E
- Get the scoop on fashion, see what’s in & what’s not. Are you in?
C
affeine is known to stimulate. While enticing our senses, it may even enhance our complexions, rid cellulite, puffiness and aid in preventing skin cancer. It looks like caffeine has a positive effect after all. In a study at Rutgers University, it was found that when lotion enriched with caffeine was smeared onto mice with melanoma, tumors that were malignant decreased by 72%. Beauty companies around the globe are possibly taking notice of the benefits of caffeine, adding our favorite morning blend to some great products. The grounds for beautiful, dimple free skin is undoubtedly caffeine. “The sublime healing of Gotu Kola combined with caffeine delivers a positive effect on cellulite. The caffeine blended with herbal extracts is known to draw out impurities to firm, tone and make cellulite disappear,” confirms Public Relations Manager, Kirsten Leigh Pratt for SHE Australia. Products including lotions, face creams, cellulite creams, fragrances and even lip balms are endowed with a fresh roasted blend of our favorite pick-me-up –coffee. Coffee may be a sure way to get us up and going, but caffeine enhanced beauty products are a sure way to wake up the skin. Aura Science’s Recoup ($50) uses three little words to describe this miraculous product - Revive, Reinvent and Refresh. According to the company, the instant Recoup is applied, the weightless gel-cream spreads like water on the skin – moisturizing to cool and hydrate the skin. The pearl agents reflect the light giving you an instant vibrant glow, while banishing puffiness. Recoup, a product rich in caffeine and potassium (two natural diuretics), combined with Vitamin E, quickly enhances metabolism and flushes out excess fluid from the skin, which ultimately eliminates puffiness. And, with long-term use you can look forward to a more radiant complexion. Companies like Neutrogena, L’Oreal and Avon are coming out with cellulite creams enriched with caffeine promising to rid women of this much detested problem. SHE Australia is another company on the verge of targeting the problem area with
a cream made of rich extracts of coffee and cola nut, curbing cellulite by toning skin. “Together with strengthening Vitamin E and the rejuvenating richness of Ginko Biloba and Kola Nut to create a firm, divine smoothness. Our Divine body balm, (Pure Coffee Vanilla Hydration, USD $11.59) immediately penetrates your skin, leaving it with a silky protective layer so your skin feels soft and hydrated with a velvety texture,” adds Leigh Pratt. Other companies just like the way it smells. Demeter Fragrance’s, (well known for their popular Pick-me-up cologne sprays ($17.50) Dirt, Tomato and Grass), have added Espresso and Cappuccino to the mix. Cappuccino, a blend of coffee, cream milk and cinnamon is more popular than its coffee counterpart – Espresso, which of course is much sharper and darker. “I have noticed that people will buy them both just to carry around and sniff during the day. Sometimes the mental jolt is almost as good as the real thing and as a coffee addict, I personally will take it any way I can," says Christopher Brosius, the perfumer and co-founder of The Demeter Fragrance Library. Mode De Vie, a Canadian beauty product company, has also added the popular aroma of cappuccino to a shea butter lip balm ($5.50), which will curb your early morning Starbuck’s craving in exchange for lips that are ultra soft. With these products in mind, you’ll have rejuvenated skin, less cellulite and feel more energetic. That’s reason enough to become addicted to beauty products doused with caffeine. u F ashion Contd..on page 29 27

“Could this be the start of the first male supermodels?”
Contd........Fashion Corner
F i rst Man Nominated For Best Model Title 24-year-old Will Chalker is the first man to be nominated for the Best Model title at the British Fashion Awards that will be held at the V&A in London on November 2. 16year-old Londoner Lily Cole and 20-year-old Russian Eugenia Volodina are named alongside in competition for the fame of the model who has contributed most to the international fashion scene in 2003. The handsome, yet masculine Sussex-born former construction builder and amateur boxer, marking a move away from fashion obsession with boyish and androgynous looks, has been modeling for nine seasons, fulfilling the catwalk tasks for such designers as Gucci, John Galliano and Sonia Rykiel and landing campaigns for YSL, Paul Smith, Perry Ellis, Zara, Daks, Michael Kors and Hugo Boss. His hour of fame came when he carried a baby tiger onto Dolce & Gabbana's spring/summer 2005 menswear catwalk. “Could this be the start of the first male supermodels?” asks his agent at Models 1, as reports British Vogue. Let’s hope that the next month will not only bring the moment of triumph to Mr. Chalker but will also spin off the new coil in fashion industry. u
