MAIA REFICCO RELEASES
"TANTO CALOR" CO-WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY LATIN GRAMMY® AWARD WINNERS (Producers for international hit DESPACITO) ANDRÉS TORRES AND MAURICIO RENGIFO SET TO BE A NEW SUMMER HIT
Argentine-American pop star and beloved actress, Maia Reficco releases "Tanto Calor," an infectious, youthful and provocative single. Andrés Torres and Mauricio Rengifo, producers of the iconic worldwide hit, "Despacito," joined forces to work on this new song that promises to be a new summer hit! During her new stage as a successful solo artist, Maia has decided to perform in Spanish, honoring the native language of her parents and her Latino identity. As a young woman, she unleashes the sounds that have been seeping into her creative process, while introducing her own style of writing: soulful and powerful with a touch of a sensual twist.
The music video evokes the aesthetics of the 70's and the euphoria of that time towards female empowerment, in which women play a leading role. "Working with Andrés and Mauricio was simply amazing in all aspects. I am very grateful that they wanted me to participate in this project," says Maia.

Red Ink Magazine had the pleasure of asking Emmey a few questions, this is what she told us. Red Ink: Who or what got you into acting? Emmy: Growing up in Los Angeles it’s something a lot of kids do. My mom says when I was little, I loved to make people laugh and was really outgoing. My older sister started to act first, so it was only natural for me to do it too. It was fun to audition and see other kids and make friends, and I used to get to pick out a toy after filming when I booked a job, which I loved. Red Ink: Is there a particular role you would like, that you haven't had already? Emmy: I’m not sure, when I do get auditions, I like characters that strong and determined. The thing I loved about Kate in “The Mysterious Benedict Society” was she was really brave and adventurous, she would charge headfirst into any situation without thinking twice, it made playing Kate really fun. Red Ink: Is there an actor/actress that you would like to act with that you haven't before? Emmy: I don’t have anyone specific in mind; I can say I was so excited to work with Kristen Schaal when I found out she was playing #2! I am a fan of “Gravity Falls” and “Bob’s Burgers”, so that was really cool. Red Ink: What do you do for fun, when you are not acting?
Emmy: I really love to draw and animate; I spend a lot of time drawing characters from shows I love and making my own. I like to play video games with my friends online, Minecraft is one of my favorites, but I’ve started getting more into different kinds of puzzle games like Portal and Superliminal. Red Ink: What can we expect next from you? Emmy:Right now, I have been focusing on finishing school, I spent the first half of the year working and going to school at the same time, and it was a really heavy workload. I am excited to see The Mysterious Benedict Society air and I hope they pick it up for a second season, so I can get back to work and see everyone again. Red Ink: Where do you see yourself in 10 years? Emmy:I want to be a storyboard artist for tv animation. I don’t think I’ll get there in ten years, but I also want to have my own animated show. I just think it would be neat. I’m glad that I live in Los Angeles because there are a lot of really good animation studios and schools around where I live. This concludes our interview with Emmy, she is truly an amazing actress with a full career ahead of her. All the best to you Emmy for your bright future ahead of you. Marshayne
T
he name Wayne Marshall might be synonymous with the 90's American styled R&B hit "G Spot" however, Wayne Marshall has been popular as an artist since the mid 1980's. His songs have remained a staple diet in the most relevant genres which are consumed by those of the AfroCaribbean generation X & still very much in demand today. During his school years you would mostly find Wayne in the music room honing his skills on electronic synthesizers & drum machines. Under the watchful eye of his music teacher (Mr Tribe) Wayne became a wiz kid of multi-track recording, creating completely new & unique sounds. During this time Wayne founded a reggae band with his school friends called Utopia & before long the band became popular and they were booked to play at local Events and Festivals. It was during these school years Wayne was introduced to Keith Swan of the popular Jah Tubbys sound system, forging a musical relationship which would see them later composing and recording songs with nothing more than a drum machine and a live bass. Wayne would play electronic drum machines which were not known to be used in roots music recordings... Wayne recorded 2 songs for the Jah Tubbys (Y&D) Label all of which peaked at no. 3 in the reggae charts and are still played on the most popular sound systems today. Wayne worked as a Studio & disc cutting engineer for the famed dub plate & mastering studio, Music House. He also worked as a studio engineer for the infamous record producer and label owner Sir Collins. He has worked with many International Celebrated Artists, which include Black Slate, Frankie Paul, Sugar Minott, Dennis Brown, Jackie Mittoo, Super Cat, Horace Andy, Nitty Gritty, Ninjaman Alton Ellis, Barrington Levy & producers such as King Jammys, Bunny Lee, and famous sound-systems like Jah Shaka, Saxon, Sir Coxsone, Addis also Well Renowned DJ's David Rodigan, and Tim Westwood. Around the same time Wayne recorded the song "I L.O.V.E." for Quadro-pack (a collaboration with Sound system owner's Gemi magic's Little Andy and INT. Immortal's Dub Bug) which again spawned another top 5 hit record. This would raise the demand for Wayne to work with many other high level sound systems and receive bookings for personal appearances; among them Wayne supported veteran reggae artists Ken Boothe and Owen Grey. 10

It was not until 1995, after receiving a standing ovation at the Jones girls show at the London West End's Dominion Theatre, that Wayne would then go on to sign with Independent Record Label Soul Town Records. With the expertise of Orlando Gittens and the keyboard chops of Jason Katt Chue (Now known as Wookie) they performed and produced top 30 and top 40 National Chart singles. During this time together Soul Town and Wayne Marshall occupied the No. 1 spot with his hit single GSpot on the Urban music charts for over 10 weeks and won numerous awards for Best Single, Best Album, Best Newcomer, Best Male Artist of which one of these awards was presented to him by renowned American Actress and Singer Brandy. Wayne songs were considered controversial at the time, he received extensive magazine and newspaper coverage and has been featured on the front covers appearing in the following publications: The Face, Blues and Soul Magazine, Echoes, Touch Magazine, The Voice Newspaper, New Nation, Caribbean Times, Music Week, Sunday Mirror, The Jamaica Observer and the Sun Newspaper, to name a few. A man of many musical talents; Internationally he has written songs and worked and performed globally with, and alongside many Legendary Artists & Icons, such as The Jones Girls, Marcia Griffiths, Ken Boothe, Owen Grey, R-Kelly, Beverly Knight, Black Street, Omar, Caron Wheeler, Gwen McRae, Jodeci, Busta Rhymes, Beenie Man & The Emotions to name just a few. Marshayne Fun Fact! Wayne was one of only 4 acts to perform at the opening ceremony for the Virgin Records, London Flagship Megastore in Tottenham Court Road. Moving forward to the Present day, Wayne recently Licensed to the UK's first ever Charity Record Label "LOC Entertainment Music group" While Music Insiders and Industry Executives wait on tender hooks at the revitalisation of his music career Wayne is all set for the launch of his 2 new anticipated debut single releases as well as an album release and a re-brand of his NEW NAME (MARSHAYNE)! The name change represents his past and current influences coming together as one for the first time on one album. This project is in the capable hands of LOC Emg and between the two emerging energies it looks like there is about to be something enigmatic about to take form bringing new fire to the Industry! The LOC ethos, "Respect The Talent - Respect The Music - Respect The Artist" is what drew LOC to Wayne’s attention.... in addition to this the founding members genuine passion & commitment to the industry, & to Wayne as an artist and seeing his vision. The demand for Marshayne continues... The Industry has woken up and paying huge attention to the legendary R&B/Reggae Artist. Marshaynes bookings include Performances alongside Shirley Jones of the Jones girls, the queen of Reggae Marcia Griffiths, Super Cat & Love & Hip Hops Lil Mo, also PA’s for club DJ Policy (Kiss)
and at Kisstory Blast Off Tour and by popular demand he will be doing something really special June 21K. (one to watch out for!) Mindful of Marshayne’s professional growth & development there is an innovative & exciting strategy in place for the project, which includes an intimate gig tour where Marshayne's will showcase the tracks from his new album; a unique blend of Marshayne’s past & current influences which showcase his skills in production. A sophisticated well positioned collaborative work with various artists from Soul, R&B, Reggae & Dancehall. Marshayne & his team, a set creative artists/musicians pushed through the uneven playing field, those unjust barriers & broke down doors, standing tall in Independent Recording Ownership when back in the 80's/90's this was unheard of. Securing Chart Topping Hit Records G-Spot, Slow Grind, Spirit & Hot Gal to name a few. They allowed others to know "we can do this too", paving the way for new Black Artists of Caribbean & African decent of today to be seen & heard in an industry that showed no love in the past years to British Black Music & British Black Artist Therefore the excellence and contributions of the likes of Marshayne, have contributed to the UK Music Industry, penetrating the Global Music Industry as a whole with the UK Reggae & R&B sound that Wayne is known for. It is truly an achievement of great success and one to be overly proud of!!!

Red Ink Magazine got the pleasure of asking Marshayne a few questions, this is what he said to us. Red Ink: Tell us what made you change your name from Wayne Marshall to Marshayne? M:Marshayne is made up of my two names Marshall ‘Marsh’ and Wayne ’Ayne’. I took the opportunity to fuse my name into Marshayne while launching my new album. The onename represents my past and current influences coming together. In 1985 I’ve had 3 top 5 Reggae hits, in the 90’s I had two R&B Albums fighting for (and winning) the no. 1 spot (and even received standing ovations as I moved from reggae to soul). The upcoming album will for me be the first time mixed multiple genres together, so in my mind the new challenge warranted a new name, hence Marshayne! Besides, I’ve always wanted to have a one-word Artist name just like Prince... :) Red Ink: As an artist/singer/songwriter did the pandemic affected you or helped you in creating new 12
music? M:The pandemic has affected my music creation in a positive way, but more importantly it has provided me the valuable time to reflect on my calling, Which is, to use my humble experience of music business, marketing, along with my positive outlook and my ‘loose’ church upbringing to do my little bit to help my community, to further, HELP OUR COMMUNITY. Red Ink: Big projects in the making, care to share some of it with your fans? M: I am about to launch my new single “I Kneel for you” with a Bedroom R&B Mix, an R&B / Soul Summer re-mix and a house re-mix. The event including the music video will be broadcasted from a Cinema and premiered as a Watch Party in the early Summer. Support for the campaign with include Radio promotion and Media Tour, and various live festival performances leading up to the Watch Party.
RED INK MAGAZINE
Red Ink: If you could collaborate with someone that you've never collaborated with before, who would that be and why? M: I have actually collaborated as a vocalist on a recording with few acts but I’m thankful to have collaborated with President Sas (The Voice of London) RIP, on my song Hot Gal. I collaborated with the Artist Top-Cat on GSpot and The Artist Pauline Henry (ex-vocalist from the Chimes) and sung the hook on a song we remixed for Shirley Jones (of the Legendary Vocal group The Jones Girls). In the 90’s I performed with an artist at Wembley arena alongside Jodeci. To my knowledge that was one of, if not her first major show, she is Mary J Blige. When great stories and words are communicated well, they connect on an emotional level I played ‘Not Gon Cry’ by Mary over and over again, it depicts her ability to reach the heart through song. I would love the opportunity to work Mary J Blige Red Ink: Tell your fans something, a quote perhaps. M: “I have been on the scene about a year now, I really just getting started.”
Red Ink: Do you write your own music? M: Know yourself! (then help others) Red Ink: Let us know what we can expect from you next. M: Following the Summer launch of I Kneel for you, it will be followed up by another single and the album. I will be performing at Metrofest RnB & Hip Hop Festival 8 August 2021, on the Capital Xtra Reloaded Main Stage alongside Mya, Blackstreet, Fat Joe etc. I’m also excited and looking forward to doing more national and international brand collaborations, again with the help of LOC EMG Charity Record Label, and Consciouslee Promotions. Wayne is all set for the launch of his 2 new anticipated debut single releases as well as an album release and a re-brand of his NEW NAME (MARSHAYNE)! The name change represents his past and current influences coming together as one for the first time on one album. MARSHAYNE 21K Marshayne has returned with a huge bang and here to stay & 21K looks set to be an amazing year for him and his team... New Name, New Music, New Team - the future's bright! u 13

lack Rob,
born, Robert Ross, died at the age of 52 on April 17th. Best known for his 2000 club staple, “Woah!” Black Rob was a one hit wonder, but that one hit was heard in every club in the early 2000’s. He was signed as a teen to Bad Boy Records, and in the 90’s for the first several years of his career he was mostly appearing as a guest vocalist in songs alongside of Bad Boy’s big talents. He added his vocals to Diddy’s “Bad Boy for Life,” a remix of Total’s ‘What About Us,” and DMX’s “24 Hrs.
to Live.” His first solo album, 2000’s Life Story, reached no. 3 on the Billboard charts and went platinum. On it was his only big hit, “Woah!” which released in 2000 and is now listed at no. 47 of the 100 Best Hip Hop Beats of All Time. You couldn’t enter a club and not hear that song playing at some point in the night. Rob faced many legal challenges in his life, serving multiple stints in prison, which stalled his career a bit. He released a second album with Bad Boy in 2005 titled The Black Rob Report, and later released a few more albums with Duck Down Music. The career may not have been storybook, but he was respected by his peers, and with “Woah!” being one of the huge success stories of Bad Boy Records at the time, Diddy became a good friend of his. 14

LEROY SCARLET
L
eroy Scarlet was born and raised in the parish of St Andrew in Jamaica. Growing up Leroy was exposed to music by the local sound systems and singers who lived in the area. Wherever there was music Leroy could be found, both in school and in the community. At the age of twelve, Leroy became a box lifter for a sound system called Killaphonic and eventually was given a chance to sing. The first time he tried he didn’t even have a microphone, they had to reverse the sound back through a speaker. DJ Big Joe had a sound system called Rebel Tone in the community and Leroy began to chant on it regularly. Whenever Leroy heard that a big sound system was coming to town, he would be at the spot long before they arrived because he didn’t want to miss anything and by this time he was performing at every opportunity he could get. Leroy's cousin , Chris Stanley , had decided to build a studio on the large piece of property he lived on. While Chris was traveling and collecting the equipment he needed for the studio, Leroy was singing 7 days a week at dances. At the return of his cousin, they worked day and night until Music Mountain Studio was finished. Jimi Cliff attended the grand opening of the studio and as most of the recording studios in Jamaica at that time were located in Kingston, artists began pouring into Music Mountain Studio because of the proximity to where they lived. Some of the earliest recordings at the studio were Boris Gardner’s “ I Want To Wake Up With You ”, Sophia George’s “ Too Girlie Girlie ” and Black Uhuru’s “ Solidarity ” album. Although Leroy wasn’t being paid he was always in the background helping out and running errands. He met big artists like Toots and The Maytals, Marcia Griffiths , Glen Ricks and many more. Around this time Sly and Robbie started to use the studio and Leroy closely studied the recording process. One day he commented to Sly Dunbar that he really liked the track they were working on so Sly told him to take a shot at it. With David Roy as the engineer, Leroy recorded his first single “ Murder ”. The single was released just before Christmas 1987. Leroy switched to producing 18
soon after, his big break coming with his production of Frankie Paul’s “ One little Romance ” and Gregory Isaacs “Lonely Teardrops” in 1993 on Reality Records label. Leroy later produced and released several albums including “ Reggae Train Series One & Two ”, Frankie Paul “ It's My Time ”, Easy B “Prophecy” , Anthony B “ Judgement Time ” and “ Dimensions in Music ” containing tracks by Glen Washington , Luciano Messenjah , Frankie Paul , General Pecos , Easy B, Anthony B , Sizzla , and Beres Hammond , plus a fourteen track album called “ Four the Hardway ” featuring Capleton , Sizzla , Luciano , and Anthony B. In the late ’90s, reggae music sales plummeted. Singles that had up until then sold from 70,000 to 80,000 copies for a hit single suddenly were selling on an average 1,000 copies. The artists were making money from shows but the producer was no longer making as much money and Leroy realized the tables had turned. Although he loved making music, he wondered how he was going to continue to make a living. With a heavy heart, Leroy switched from making music to Real Estate, but unfortunately, after some time, the dust from construction had given him severe asthma. Continues...on page 20

Although he loved making music, he wondered how he was going to continue to make a living. With a heavy heart, Leroy switched from making music to Real Estate, but unfortunately, after some time, the dust from construction had given him severe asthma. Back once again with the music, Leroy was talking with his longtime friend Duckie Simpson from Black Uhuru about the state of the reggae industry and about how he had a lot of music that had never been
20
released. Duckie suggested that he form a band and use the band in combination with some of his catalog of unreleased music to get the music out there. Leroy liked this idea so he set about putting together a band. He had always liked the idea of being part of something meaningful and he believed that a band could contribute a lot with the unity of ideas, energy, and methods. Meanwhile, a producer of the movie “ One Love ” flew into Jamaica from the UK to meet with the late Gregory Isaacs’ wife to get permission to create a movie of the life story of Gregory but
RED INK MAGAZINE
permission wasn’t given so the idea was dropped. Leroy thought this was a travesty as he believed Gregory’s legacy should be recorded. He talked to Sly and Robbie about this and Sly said: “The story doesn’t have to just be the life of Gregory Isaacs, call it The Powerhouse of Reggae or something similar and make it the life of all the reggae powerhouses. ”The idea seemed like a good one but it still has a long way to go, although when forming the band Leroy adopted the name Reggae Powerhouse Band . The lead singers for the band are an eclectic mix of nationalities. Vocalist Cordel Dunnah is an Antiguan
with a unique sound. Leroy met Cordel while in Antigua, watched him perform, and loved his voice. He decided Cordel was going to be one of the Reggae Powerhouse Band family. Trinidad and Tobago national Pernel Winchester is another of Reggae Powerhouse Band's lead singers. This talented Tobagonian has a powerful melodic voice and commanding stage presence. Vocalist number three is Guyanese Kobla Mentor who brings solid experience to the band. Reggae Powerhouse selects talent from various islands to get a unique sound and fresh ideas.u

It has proven itself to be quite interesting as well as satisfying to work with clients as I allow them to assist in the making of their items. The clients truly love this concept, I interview each client making sure we are on the same page, this procedure guarantees full satisfaction. My customer base frequently come back for other items as well, I not, I receive great referrals. I am selling my jewelry on several online stores. This is fairly new to me, but my preference is still a one on one with clients, the online stores assist me in getting my name out and to the public. At this point, I am seeing great results in this procedure. Carrolyn’s current project is teaching others to use their creative juices as she teach them
how to make their own jewelry and she have noticed that they are creating styles very much different than hers. They are doing such an excellent job in their creations. It was a jewelry maker that helped heralong the way and she simply want to give back to others, it is a very rewarding task for Carrolyn to sit back and enjoy her students complete their projects. Carrolyn is just as excited about her products as her clients are excited about their newly designed items. Normally, she start with an idea while having all of the materials positioned in front of her, from a simple idea quickly gets transposed into beautiful jewelry and the most remarkable thing is that it can be passed onto generations to enjoy the very same item. This is really amazing to her, yes, she definitely enjoy her work.

REDINK: What are the skills you need to have for a jewelry designer to be successful? CB: My best skills which works for me is my customer interactions, sense of creativity and patience. Another feature that I'd found is the ability to complete all projects. Many times, I had a great idea for an item but even-though it worked so well in my mind but it was too difficult to formulate on the actual piece. There have been cases that I walked away from it but for some reason or another went back to the item with a different approach. I get giddy like a child when the technique works beautifully. I guess this is when my patience kicks in. REDINK: What was the best design that you came up with? CB: My most treasured set is the one I named "Mother of all Bling (MOAB)". It is the set that you definitely want to be seen, you simply cannot be shy when wearing such an item. This necklace has 5 strands of beads ranging from sizes 6mm to 20mm and some are taken from a vintage necklace from the 1920s, the glass 24
beads are brilliant and the workmanship is truly amazing. It is the most beautiful and unique piece of jewelry I had ever seen. It captures light from any angle as you grace the floor. At this current time, I still have this remarkable set and it seems very difficult for me to part from it. REDINK: Do you collaborate with any other designers? CB: I collaborate with many jewelry designers, especially, with techniques. Our approach maybe similar but the materials maybe very different. I have learned that we all have our own niche to the finish project. Many like to make casual jewelry or maybe jewelry that compliments office wear but my jewelry is designed for evening and special events, such as a wedding or out for the evening. I also create big and bold jewelry as well. I constantly meet with other designers to discuss hardware and/or the current jewelry findings. Another one of our discussions are the newest jewelry that’s on the market and how best we can place our unique personality to a similar item. This is not to copy but to keep our individual styles fresh and new. Also, I love working with dress

designers, the conversation is very unique in itself because they already know what they are representing and now they want jewelry to enhance their product. Getting them to agree to your ideas is a challenge because what they are thinking of an accessory for their dress design which may not work when creating the jewelry for some reason or another may not be exactly as both want but through negotiations the finish piece comes out gorgeous! REDINK: If you have another skill in designing or creating, what would you design? CB: I am so pleased in this current juncture, during the evening shade of my life, I am still amazed of what my accomplishments and pray that I can continue on. I feel so blessed to do this and excite others as I get delight in my work. For years I did work in order to meet my financial comfort, many times I did not like the work I was asked to do. While working in Customer Service, I had to give many customers bad news and sometimes I knew that there could have been a better way to get to the results. I did the work what I was instructed to do. Today, I am very please to present an item that works for the garment, as it enhances the beauty within the person wearing it. This is my enjoyment! If I get paid or not, I am creating something for generations to come. I can remember as a child wearing my mother’s beads when she was not looking and of course, I had to wear her lipstick also. Today, I am creating jewelry and maybe a little girl is trying on mother’s beads. Maybe! REDINK: During the pandemic did you have to make any changes in your business? CB: Yes. All of us as Americans did not understand the Pandemic and/or its affect. Until we fully understood what we were facing, we stopped a lot of activity that interacted with others. I was very concerned about infecting others as well as getting myself infected, so I stopped everything. The information that was given to us as citizens was not accurate, as more the proper information about this disease was filtered down, gave us a chance to re-evaluation the situation and how to place it in our daily lives. I soon went back to my jewelry making as I incorporated more safety steps to protect my customers. One of my steps was to wear rubber gloves, I also disinfected the jewelry completely as well as the padded envelopes in order to ensure my client’s safety. I wanted my customer to be reassured the safety of the item, I sent them pictures of me disinfecting the item as well as the packaging. Now, with vaccinations, update information, we can somewhat relax as we resume with our activities but I did keep some of the steps still in place. The decease is not fully eliminated but it’s something that we all can work through!
REDINK: Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years? CB: In the next five years, I can see me doing much of the same but on a larger scale and working with exclusive clientele. My best work is one on one, much like an artist, creating a masterpiece with a stroke of a brush, one stroke at a time. This is how I complete a jewelry item, collecting one bead at a time as I weave in different contrasting colors, shapes and sizes in order to have the ultimate finish product. REDINK: What was your favorite Fashion Show or Photo Shoot? CB: My favorite Fashion Show is when I was assigned 20 international male models to display my jewelry designs down the runway. Oh my, this was so exciting to me, I would never had imagined this to happen in my lifetime. Each model was so professional, they took my creations and handled the jewelry as though their very lives depended on them...wow! As they maneuvered down the runway, they made sure that everyone saw the slightest detail in my designs, truly amazing. This is an experience that I will capture and hold close to my heart always. This concludes our interview with Carrolyn, she is truly a very talented jewelry designer. Please follow her on her social media platforms Instagram: @creationsbycarrol By Linda Cocochynna Ford u 25
