RED INK MAGAZINE

Dear Readers, I am thrilled to have celebrated two years of the re-launch of RED INK Magazine. I am truly grateful to everyone who supports RED INK. I am also very grateful that even during the COVID-19 pandemic RED INK Magazine was never at a standstill, each month an issue was produced for the readers. My main focus for RED INK is to promote various paradigms of entertainment and to keep raising the bar. As your publisher I will not compromise on content in the magazine. I believe in positivity and will always make sure that RED INK maintains its positive energy and never promotes negativity. Personally, I try my best to surround myself with positive people who I can learn from, but of course sometimes you always find that one person who doesn’t fully believe in what you are doing and that can cause turmoil. The main thing is to find that weak link and get rid of it. Knowing that you can’t do everything on your own is the first step, having the right people by your side is the second step; with this you can never fail. Re-launching RED INK Magazine on a digital platform has been the best thing ever for me. I am willing to go the distance for the readers. Always keeping you informed and entertained with current events, interesting information and stylized images; and of course promoting artists, actors, designers, models and much more. “To love what you do and feel that it matters how could anything be more fun?” I  love this quote by Katharine Graham. Cheers to many more years ahead. Enjoy your reading with RED INK Magazine. BIZ MARKIE HIP HOP Beat Box Legend Gone Too Soon

B

iz Markie is a household name for countless people around the world, but he was known to everyone for different things. He was the rapper who sang the iconic 80’s song “Just a Friend,” a song just about everyone in the world has sung with their friends on an inebriated evening or two; he is known as a legendary beat boxing extraordinaire; he is known to most children and parents of young children as the silly beat boxer from Yo Gabba Gabba, as he was the regular character that taught young fans of the show how to beat box on TV and as a regular touring performer on the travelling stage show; and to us at RED INK, Mike and Naz, he is the reason that we met.

Biz Markie, whose real name was Marcel Theo Hall, was born in Harlem on April 8, 1964. He was raised on Long Island, in Brentwood. And his career was built in and around New York City. He was a New Yorker, through and through. And his music was a mainstay of the clubs and radio stations from the late 80’s until present day. On Friday July 16, 2021, Biz lost his battle with complications arising from Diabetes and was taken from this world, way too soon. There is some respite knowing that he died with his wife holding his hand and letting him know how much he was loved till the very end. Biz, got his start rolling with the legendary Juice Crew which was assembled by DJ Magic Mike and Marley Marl, and featured other hip-hop artist and rappers like Big Daddy Kane, Masta Ace, Roxanne Shante, and Kool G Rap. In 1986, Marley Marl produced Biz’s first single titled “Make Music With Your Mouth, Biz.” This was where the world got to sample his out of this world beat boxing skills. In my humble opinion, Biz Markie was one of the greatest Beat Boxers that ever lived, creating club mix beats with his tongue and cheek as the only instruments. Markie went on to release an LP 8

in 1988 called “Goin’ off” which featured some solid hits like “Vapors” and “Nobody Beats the Biz” (Which was a parody on the iconic electronics store jingle for Nobody Beats the Wiz.) The parody on the store jingle and Biz’s general comedic and easy going nature laid the ground work, but another song on that same LP titled “Pickin’ Boogers” solidified his nickname and title as the Clown Prince of Hip Hop, a title he was proud of. His career started off to a mediocre, yet still iconic beginning, but in 1989 it took off like a rocket ship, with the unexpected hit “Just a Friend,” being released on his album, “The Biz Never Sleeps.” This song had a hook that was easy to sing and became the drunken party cry in every club across America. And this became was Markie’s one and only platinum hit. Continued...on page 10

Continues...from page 8 Marcel Hall, was not just known for his musical exploits, he was a mainstay character on the world wide children’s phenomenon known as Yo Gabba Gabba. Anyone who has had a child under 12 years of age in their life over the last 20 years knows Yo Gabba Gabba and probably recognized Biz Markie was a regular character on the show with his larger than life smile and friendly voice teaching their children how to make fun sounds with their mouths on the show and live on stage during the shows worldwide tours. Biz has also voiced characters on SpongeBob, Men in Black II and played himself in cameo appearances on several TV shows including Black-ish, Empire, and other hit shows. Biz Markie was well rounded and always professional. He was known to have a comedic touch in everything he did and his smile was as famous as the sounds that came out of it. During an era of rappers and hip-hop artists going to dark and dangerous places, spitting lyrics about gangsters and guns and drugs and bitches, Biz Markie was

one of the stand-outs, that kept his lyrics clean, fun and entertaining and something that people of all ages and credos could enjoy. On a personal note, Naz, the owner and designer behind RED INK Magazine and myself, the editor and content contributor, Michael, owe our relationship to Biz Markie, in a way. I was a regular patron, with my good friend Terrence aka MC Pressure, at a club called Tabu in Hempstead, on Long Island. My friend and I were there enjoying the night with our limo outside, living life, when suddenly my friend rushed off and came back through the crowd literally carrying a beautiful woman in his arms, above his head and told me how he just found the perfect girl for me. Alcohol was involved, lol. This startled woman and I ultimately got to know each other, and I found out that she, Naz, was there to interview Biz Markie after his performance at the club later that night. If he had not been performing that night, we would have never met. After a few drinks and dances and a visit to my limo to “talk” where it was a little less noisy, the rest is history. Now you know the story of Mike and Naz. Additionally, our daughter Cyra has always loved Biz Markie on Yo Gabba Gabba, he was definitely her favorite character on the show. I must add one sad final note here, one of our biggest regrets is that we never got to schedule an interview with him after that and tell him how meaningful he wound up being to our lives and even our daughter’s life. Marcel Hall, Biz Markie, you will be remembered by millions for the legendary sounds that you could make with your mouth, for your comedic lyrics and the joy you brought to children, but for us you will always be remembered even more dearly, as the reason we had the pleasure of meeting each other and forging a family. Rest in Peace Biz. By Michael Devine u

Jamaican Bad Boys of Comedy Deliver Good Laughs at The Garden

Jamaican Bad Boys of Comedy cast members Drew Thomas (left) and Chris "Johnny" Daley are joined by Consul General Oliver Mair (third left) and Palm Beach resident Hugh Smith (right) after rollicking performances at The Garden in Lauderdale Lakes on Sunday (July 18).

auderdale Lakes, FL - Fresh from a soldout opening night in Palm Beach on July 10th, the Jamaican Bad Boys of Comedy tour, featuring Oliver Samuels, Drew Thomas and Chris “Johnny” Daley made their second stop at The Garden in Lauderdale Lakes, Florida on Sunday night, (July 18) to a standing room only crowd. Due to unforeseen circumstances, host Oliver Samuels was absent, but comedian Raul Blaze, who is fast becoming a sensation on social media, filled in as host and opened the show by introducing himself and taking a rollcall of Jamaican parishes to see which ones were represented. The crowd immediately warmed up to Blaze, who engaged the audience with a lesson on

Jamaican words, explaining their possible origins and various uses. Versed in five languages, he dropped some Japanese and Spanish, translating to Jamaican dialect to the delight of the audience. Blaze got the audience relaxed and ready to laugh as he introduced the first performer, Drew Thomas. Thomas greeted the audience and rolled into his slow easy style of delivery, touching topics such as marriage, old age, his dating experience, men aging and his first prostate examination. He had the room in stitches as he targeted one member of the audience telling him how fortunate he was to be married and [he] should thank his wife for dressing him. Thomas had the crowd’s full attention, although he had to call out a couple who was

talking at the bar a bit loudly and advised them that there was “a show going on here” and they needed to “shut up”. The loud applause which followed indicated that the audience was totally his as he continued to deliver a series of humorous comments. When Chris “Johnny” Daley took the stage, to the music of Busy Signal’s “Jamaica Love”, the energy in The Garden immediately soared, as Daley began to shower praises on Jamaica and Jamaicans, much to the crowd’s delight. He greeted Consul General Oliver Mair, who was in the audience, and praised him as the “first young and vibrant Consular General” who attends every event, from major functions to backyard Bar-B-Ques. He commented that the Consul General should join the PNP as they needed someone like him at this time. The room erupted in rambunctious laughter for minutes, but Daley was just getting started. Daley was in top form, delivering a rapid barrage of humorous observations, resulting in nonstop laughter. His personal story on how he and his wife keep their marriage ablaze in the bedroom was totally hilarious and proved how he has mastered the craft of stand-up comedy. Chris commanded the stage and worked the room, quickly responding to comments from various audience members, which generated even more bursts of laughter. “This is one of the best nights I’ve had in a long time,” said Myrtle Williams, who drove from Kendall to see the show in Lauderdale Lakes. Alison Wiggins commented, “It is amazing how much we needed this show, they should really come back soon.” Daley called Drew Thomas and Raul Blaze to join him on stage as he closed the show and shared the final moments on social media with the crowd cheering loudly, totally satisfied. The Jamaican Bad Boys of Comedy Tour will be making stops in various U.S. cities, Canada and the Caribbean. Look out for them coming to your town soon.

RED INK MAGAZINE WELCOME TO ICNA-MAC 4TH ANNUAL CONFERENCE, 2003

Continues....from page 23 Mercedes Benz Fashion Week the big show when I landed in NY. An associate of mine actually took me into the back door in Bryant Park and pulled a few strings to get me in. In minutes he prepared me for the challenges that were about to fall upon me that day. I never moved so fast dressing and undressing. Designers were yelling at models. Models were crying. Beautiful garment were flying. Models were being ushered to the back of the runway with open hands and not so polite gestures. I did my best to keep up with designers lineup but other models were worried about others looking at them. Mind you, I’m new to this, so I thought this was the norm until one of the designers said that was one of the worst shows he ever been a part of. Needless to say I walked for countless designers over the years and it wasn’t until 2003 that I decided to step away from the runway. As I reflected back on my modeling career, I hated the way some of the designer spoke to models and belittled them. Thank God it never happened to me. My thought process then was “I can sew. I can become a designer and walk in my own shows”. And so the next faze of my time in the industry began. I started my own clothing line, Alve Threads. It was challenging but possible. I purchase my first Singer sewing machine and hated using a pattern. So I began free hand sewing and mimicking garments in my wardrobe. Creating all of these new piece gave me such a high and I was my own sweat shop. I would consult with other designs in basic chit chat about creating new designs, never letting on that I was about to re-invent my self as a NY fashion designer. After staying away from the industry for over a year I was ready for the next fashion week season. I was so hyped that I put my self in a position to where I was showing, casting, and/or shooting once a week for six months. My associates were requesting my garments hit the runway because my creative level was like no other. Models and agents were contacting me for wardrobe and upcoming show dates. Everyone was cozying up to me. I felt like a real designer. It was like I was dreaming. Stemming from Houston, Texas to the Big Apple and making my stamp here was amazing. Needless to say after two year I soon experienced burnout. Once again I took a hiatus from the industry until I was introduced to my now publicist, William Michael Reid. In the first hour of meeting him he never stopped talking. I was so amazed that a person could talk that long and fast without taking a breath that my mouth was ajar and my teeth were dry. That day was the first day of the rest of my career with him. He has gotten me into fashion shows from NYC to Hawaii. FYI. I’ve never burned bridges in the industry, and that’s what has gotten me this far. I no longer had to wait for fashion show, print, theater or modeling opportunities, William would have a pleather of gigs for me. Now I had time to incorporate acting into my career on top of fashion. During this time I was introduced to Roy Campbell, a very close friend of Tyra banks. He believed so much in my work that he always included my work in various shows he pro 24

duced on the east coast. Oh yes I felt honored. At this point in the fashion industry I was able to walk for designers, create various clothing lines as well as walk-in my own Fashion week shows. I was at the top of my fashion career creating garments that were over the top. Audiences were always on the edge of there sets just waiting to see what I’d be sending down the runway. Others designers were always suggesting why I should design but I always tell the that I was from the country and whatever the New York vibe threw out I’d mix it with a little country and that would be my collection. This fashion industry is like politics, just a conflict among individuals hoping to achieve power aka who has the most jaw dropping garments. I find it amusing what co inspires me to create conversational pieces.

I love what I do and this creative mind is always in a zone which floors me after the fact. The thought of being an established designer in my own right is freaking awesome. I may not be a “A List Designer” but people recognize me on the street. That is a the ultimate high, especially when you are with a group of family and friends. “If my time in this fashion industry becomes too serious and no longer amusing I’m taking a life long hiatus”. Today I am preparing for the “NYC Live! @ Fashion Week” Spring/Summer 2022 Fashion Showcase (Season 12) -- Wednesday, September 15th, 2021 -- The Mezzanine -- in New York City. If my time in this fashion industry becomes too serious and no longer amusing I’m taking a life long hiatus. "If you are able to do more than one thing, cultivate them and get familiar with your crafts. Get in where you fit in and make a difference if you can by motivating yourself and overcoming your personal struggle. Pay your dues." REDINK: Who or what inspired your new collection? AA: Honey the pandemic inspired me. I had all the tune in the world. It was either be depressed or sew. I have an interesting patch work collection (to cover up some of the Covid wounds), a few bell bottoms to make a little noise, plenty of short sleeves to show off the power in the strength of a woman along with a fe other jaw dropping pieces. REDINK: What can we expect from you in the near future? AA: Who knows what the future gold for me. I’m trying to move to Florida. Sunshine, sand, blue water and drinks which helps my creative liquids start to flow. Seriously. I am inspire to create whoever God places me. New York is always the go to place for fashion and it’s only a plan rid away one my publicist, William gives me the green light. It was an absolute pleasure interviewing this amazing Fashion Designer. Support and follow this fabulous designer on social media and check out her amazing design collections.
