Norm Macdonald Master of Deadpan Comedy and Impressions, died at 61
N
orm Macdonald was a comedy legend. Born in 1959 in Quebec City, Canada he started his career as a young adult in the local Canadian comedy clubs and built a name for himself, even winning Star Search in 1990; which led to him getting his first writing gig for the Dennis Miller Show and Roseanne. He was a master of impressions; a genius at delivering deadpan (emotionless and expressionless) punchlines and one liners; and also someone who stood by his values and never allowed anyone to tell him what he can and cannot say. Probably best known for his role on Saturday Night Live; where for nearly 6 years he starred as a master impressionist and the anchor of “The Weekend Update” segment. Over the years on SNL he portrayed Burt Reynolds, David Letterman, Mr. Bean, Clint Eastwood, Quentin Tarantino and countless others. His comedy was loved by millions. Many people wondered why he ever left SNL, because he was such a beloved staple of the show. In truth, it was his own moral standing that caused him to be fired. In this era of liberal controlled media and networks, Norm was never one to allow his own morals or values to be swayed by network executives. During the OJ Simpson trial, Norm took it upon himself to share his true feelings about the circus of a trial and was pressured by NBC executives to “turn it down” but he refused to suppress his beliefs, among which was the belief that most of America shared; That OJ was guilty of murder. And after he was acquitted in what most people recognize as one of the sloppiest high profile trials of this century, Norm stated on SNL “Well, it is finally official: Murder is legal in the state of California.” This line is what many attribute to him being unseated from the show. He was also cancelled more recently in 2018 from a Tonight Show appearance because he publicly stood up for Louis C.K., Chris Hardwick and Roseanne Barr after they were cancelled by the “Cancel Culture/ Me Too” movements. He was a staunch believer in free speech and free press and made statements defending the scandalized comedians and once again liberal media censored him and prevented him from appearing on the show. Neither of these experiences had any effect on Norm, instead he went on to have roles in dozens of huge comedy movies, He was the long running voice of “Death” on The 4
Family Guy and he embraced newer technology creating a web series, his own talk show on Netflix and podcasts. Norm was always a comedian that could deliver the most brutal comedy punch lines and celebrity roasts with the most stoic face that made the joke seem ruder than it really was and he was loved for that dry delivery. His mastery of Impressions led to him being cast as the iconic Colonel Sanders in a long running KFC advertising campaign. Norm Macdonald loved his craft and making people laugh more than anything. That was one of the reasons his death was so unexpected to his fans. People close to him have said that he was battling cancer for a decade, but that he kept it secret from the public, even from extended members of his own family, because he wanted to be known for making people laugh and not for his personal struggle. Norm Macdonald, for your comedy I am a huge fan and one of millions that will miss you dearly, and for your unyielding belief in freedom you are a hero and someone that has the respect of countless others. Rest in peace Norm, and know that your legacy of laughter will live on forever. by Michael Devine u

Continued....from page 9 Red Ink Magazine had the absolute pleasure of interviewing Dylan Flashner, this is what this amazing, incredibly talented Singer/Actor/Producer had to tell us. REDINK: How do you balance Music, Acting and Producing? DF: I won’t lie, it can be quite the balancing act between the three. I have such a great team and support group around me that allows me to just focus on the art. My job is to take care of the task at hand, when I’m acting I’m acting, when I’m doing music I’m doing music, etc. I try to stay as present as possible so that I can allot that time as best as I can when I have it. REDINK: Do you have a preference of which you enjoy more? DF: My first love will always be music but if I chose one, my passion at the moment is in my acting. I enjoy playing characters and bringing them to life on screen. It brings me great joy to entertain and I appreciate the opportunity I have to work with such talented people. REDINK: Who or what inspired you to get into the entertainment business? DF: I think I’ve wanted to entertain since I was a kid, maybe 5 or 6 years old. I grew up watching movies with my family and sports always wanting to be an athlete. I just always envisioned playing in front of crowds and being seen by the masses for doing something you truly love. I never had the confidence to get into the industry until I was much older though. I was always too afraid to audition until my late teens-early 20s. REDINK: If you could collaborate a song with someone you never worked with before, who would that be?
10
DF: If I could collaborate with any artist it would be Drake. His journey from acting to music, his whole discography, approach to art, and lyricism have always inspired me as an artist. I would love to one day be able to converse and tell him how much he’s helped my life. REDINK: Can you tell us what projects you are working on now? DF: I’m currently filming two movies this month and working on my first EP for music. I’m very excited for you guys to see these films and listen to the music. I can’t give too much more detail than it will be well worth the wait and to expect the unexpected! REDINK: Where do you see yourself in the next 10 years? DF: 10 years is a long time but I do see myself starring/producing movies and hopefully continuing to make music. I try not to look too far in front of me, it keeps me grounded to take things day by day. I believe in goal setting but also want to celebrate the wins along the way. REDINK: What can we expect next? DF: I have two films coming out in September in theaters! The Card Counter with Oscar Issac and Tiffany Haddish September 4th. The Comeback Trail with Morgan Freeman, Robert De Niro and Tommy Lee Jones September 11. Other than that is to continue on the path I’m going on now. Make movies, produce film, create music, and keep improving as a human being everyday.
This concludes our interview with Dylan Flashner. “Not just good looks, he’s also an extremely multi-talented and driven person, who’s on the path for success at whatever he puts his mind to.”RED INK Magazine. u Please follow Dylan on his social media platforms. SISTA MIKA Belgian Reggae Songstress
B
elgian Reggae artist Sista MIKA brings you the first single “Freedom”, featuring Mykal Rose and Sizzla Kalonji, from her upcoming album “Sista MIKA Meets The Legends”. “Freedom” ft Mykal Rose and Sizzla Kalonji was produced by Leroy Scarlett and the Reggae Powerhouse Band, with executive producer Sophie Michalakoudis. It was recorded in Kingston, Jamaica and was released on August 18th on all major platforms and Sista MIKA’s website. “Sophia Michalakoudis aka Sista MIKA was born in Brussels, Belgium. Her father was a Greek musician who played Rebetiko, which is traditional Greek music. Rebetiko means “rebel” and, like 12
Reggae music, talks about social issues, the struggle for equality but is the music of the soul, like blues. This was the music that surrounded Sista MIKA as she was growing up. In 1986 Sista MIKA attended a Black Uhuru concert in Brussels and was mesmerized by Mykal Rose’ incredible voice and onstage charisma. This was the inspiration for her reggae music career. She formed her first reggae band at the age of 23 called MIKA and The Human Race with her two sisters, Ann aka Factor-X, and Elizabeth, and they released a vinyl 45 called “MLK” (a tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King) which received acclaim from the media.
RED INK MAGAZINE
Over the years Sista MIKA has recorded 8 albums with collaborations from artistes like Steel Pulse, Freddy Loco, Omar Perry, Dubcreator, Gussie P., and Henry P. which have had limited distribution.” Sista MIKA is now completing her next album “Sista MIKA Meets The Legends” which is pro
duced by the legendary Grammy winning Producer Winston Harriott. “Freedom” ft Mykal Rose and Sizzla Kalonji will pique your curiosity and have you anticipating the release of the album later this year. Continued...on page 14 13

Continued...from page 13 Red Ink Magazine had the pleasure of interviewing Sista Mika, this is what this incredibly talented Singer had to tell us. REDINK: What was it like to working with Mykal Rose, the person who inspired your reggae music career? SM:Personally, it is a great achievement for me because I met Mykal Rose several times in Belgium a long time ago but nothing was done. In 2020 I went to Jamaica and there was a special opportunity that came about through my manager/producer Winston G. Harriott. His friend Leroy Scarlett proposed that I remake the song “Freedom” with Mykal Rose and Sizzla. I was also supposed to make a video shooting but unfortunately Mykal Rose couldn’t come to Jamaica because of the Covid. I have to say that this is the apotheosis of my 35 years of reggae music and it also shows that we must never give up, continue to believe. REDINK: What made you choose Reggae music over Rebetiko? SM: First of all, I don’t speak very good Greek and “rebetiko” is very intimate music, practically only heard in the Greek Community, however, I sometimes added Greek sounds in my songs. Reggae Music is universal and it is spread all over the world. REDINK: If you could collaborate a song with someone you never worked with before, who would that be? SM: It would be with Ziggy Marley. I discovered him when he was young with the Melody Makers. He is a very great artist who is constantly renewing himself, he gives off very very positive energy and power. His message has always resonated with me. He does not seem pretentious despite being the 1st son of the King. He does not try to be a copy of his father either, he is continuity. REDINK: Can you tell us what projects you are working on now? SM: At the moment I have two albums which are ready, the one recorded in Jamaica “Sista MIKA meets the Legends” and a cover album recorded in Belgium with Panache Culture and Jamaican musicians from London. The album is called “Jahmika Inspirations”.things that influence me! I am looking for a label/ record company because I don’t want to release them as I used to do as an independent production… 14
RED INK MAGAZINE
REDINK: Where do you see yourself in the next 10 years? SM: You never know how to predict the future. I would like to continue to create, to make projects, and especially live stages appearances As reggae artists, we do not fit into the fashion phenomenon, nor of a marketing plan, commercial, etc… and for that reason, there is no age limit. On the contrary, experience is there. REDINK: What can we expect next? SM: I would like to do international tours using my musical background of 9 albums and to finally be able to have wider recognition. Let Jah work. Never give up.
This concludes our interview with Sista Mika. She is ambitious, driven and making sure that nothing’s in her way for success. u Please follow Sista Mika on her social media platforms. https://www.sistamika.com/buy-cd-s www.sistamika.com Twitter: @SistaMika
