Colin Powell

Great Military Leader and First Black Secretary of State has Died at age 84

C

olin Powell will go down in history as one of the greatest military leaders and most influential Presidential Cabinet Members in U.S. History. During his tenure, he earned the rank of 4-Star General of the United States Army. He was the first black United States National Security Advisor and the first Black Man to become Secretary of State, the highest level Cabinet member and 1st cabinet member in line to replace the President after the Vice President. He also held the title as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, which is the highest military rank in the United States Armed Forces. He was truly an inspirational and great man and a National Hero. Prior to his time as a General and Statesman, he was a career soldier. Powell served with valor during the Vietnam Conflict and during his second tour in Vietnam he was decorated with the Soldier's Medal for bravery after he survived a helicopter crash and single-handedly rescued three others, including his superior officer, from the burning wreckage. He also earned a Purple Heart and Distinguished Service Medals for each branch of the Armed Forces. He was also awarded several high civilian honors and medals of freedom and was additionally recognized for military service by several foreign nations. During his time as the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs he oversaw The Invasion of Panama, to overthrow the Drug Kingpin who had seized control of the country; and The Persian Gulf War, specifically, Operation Desert Storm and Desert Shield, which were set to overthrow Saddam Hussein and was the first major assault on tyranny and terrorism in the Middle East. There is a “Blot” on his record, put there by the Liberal Media and spiteful democrats, claiming that because no nuclear weapons were found in Iraq that they must have never been there and Powell’s evidence must have been faked. Please rest assured that Colin Powell did no such thing and the fact that he was never even charged or investigated by anyone other than journalists is testament to that fact. Colin Luther Powell was a decorated national hero, military leader, and world renowned politician. That is the legacy he earned and that is the legacy he should be remembered for. Colin Luther Powell was born April 5th, 1937 in Harlem, 4

NY. He served this great country of ours with distinction and honor. With his valorous record during the Vietnam Conflict, where his heroism saved many lives and his incredible history as a 4-Star General of the Army and as the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs where he oversaw some of the largest military operations since World War II, his dedication to country can be called nothing less than heroic. As Secretary of State he created an internal system of checks and balances which consisted of a set of questions that every President and military commander should be able to answer before declaring war, because Peace was always at the front of this soldier’s mind. His amazing life came to a sad end on October 18,th, 2021 after losing a battle with Covid-19 due to complications from his underlying Multiple Myeloma and Parkinson’s Disease. We can only hope that future military and political leaders of America can even come close to attaining the merit and maintaining the integrity of the man that was Colin Powell. Rest In Peace Sir, I Salute You. by Michael Devine u

CARMEN BORLA

ARGENTINIAN ACTRESS & SINGER-SONGWRITER & COMPOSER

S

inger-songwriter, actress, and composer, Carmen Borla shines a light of her own in the performing arts world in the United States. Born in Argentina, she grew up and spent her childhood in a small town near Buenos Aires. From an early age she spoke musically, a language in which she flows naturally.

Her first single is entitled “Sugar”, a wanted nightmare! The video represents the thousand faces of the mental loop in which we can live in when we say "yes" to something we know we should have said "no" to instead. "My favorite line from the song is 'You numbed and swallowed me'. There is something about the way I write poetry that shows a bit of darkness when it comes to my descriptions. A very good writer and rapper friend told me a while ago: 'your pen is heavy... you sing softly but, you hit hard with your words'. That's when I realized how rich that contrast is…besides being the best compliment I've ever heard in my life". The song was produced by Rafael Urbina (Rafasloop), mixed by Carlos Mas and the mastering was done by Dave Mcnair. The guest musicians were: Jerry Soto and Rainer Diaz on guitar, Fernando Colombet on bass, Ismael Baiz on drums, David Alastre on keyboards, percussion by Rafasloop, and on backing vocals Paloma Muñoz, Camila Zitelli, Ivana Uman and Silvana Salazar. She has spent part of her career in theater and film, performing at various festivals and working in collaborations. Musically, she collaborated with PJ Rose on three songs on an album: Odyssey (An electro Symphonic Journey), Nocturne (which explores a bit of her classical vocal sound), Drown, Intrepid (with lyrics written by Carmen). 8

RED INK MAGAZINE

She also took part in an album of chanted meditations recordings called "Shivers" from the "Mind Massage" platform with the song "Breath". In 2018, she recorded "Rooted"where Carmen co-wrote with her friend Zachary Murdock. She also collaborated with him in his project Cowlick, in the song "Home" from his album "No, I Won't Be Home for Christmas but I Love You". In 2019, she was part of a workshop at the Public Theatre called "BARS"

where she met great friends and collaborators. Some of her influences in music and artistic expression include: Erykah Badu, Childish Gambino, Mercedes Sosa, Charly Garcia, Amy Winehouse, Jacob Collier, Frank Ocean, El Flaco Spinetta, Bebe, D’Angelo, Queen, The Beatles, and lately she keeps listening to Cardellino, Drexler, Kevin Johansen Y Nafta. RED INK MAGAZINE

Continued....from page 9 Red Ink Magazine had the pleasure of interviewing Carmen Borla, this is what this amazing, incredibly talented Singer/Actor/Composer had to tell us. REDINK: Who or what influenced you to become a singer and at what age? CB: I don't really remember my life without feeling music as a "form of communication". For my family and friends music was always very important. It was a way to celebrate, to share time together, a way to photograph a moment through sound. Honesty, I never had a lucid moment in which I told myself “this is what I want to do”. I simply started performing at age 9 and never stopped… REDINK: Do you write your own music? CB: Yes! And I love doing it. I write my own lyrics and also create the melodies. Once I have a clear idea of how I want the song to sound, I get together with other musicians, who are experts players of different instruments, and add up to the design of the song. It’s a very exciting process, collaborating with other artists and materializing an idea together. REDINK: Tell us some of your struggles in the music business, if any. CB: Well, I’m learning to promote myself. I guess I struggle with that! The creative aspect excites me but, the business side of art is out of my comfort zone. Both things are necessary so, I’m taking it as a learning opportunity. REDINK: Let us about your new single “Sugar”. CB:Sugar talks about the moment in which we say “yes” to something we know, we should have said “no” to. It’s letting go and enjoying that mistake. I wanted to celebrate with an upbeat song and laugh at us admitting that we 10

knew what the outcome was going to be from the beginning. REDINK: How do you balance acting and singing, and which do you enjoy more? CB: I’ve been doing both things for a long time so, I don’t really think about “how to balance them”. It’s true that there are moments in which one of the activities requieres more energy from me than the other but, I know it will be the other way around in no time. And which one do I enjoy more…I actually think that singing and acting complement each other, at the end of the day they both requiere the performer to: “tell a story”. I think it’s unfair to say I like one over the other. The creative process of acting is very different to the singing or composing one, and they both fill me with joy. REDINK: Where do you see yourself in 10 years? CB: Creating, collaborating and performing. I know that telling stories through art is what makes me happy. So, that’s what I aim to do for the rest of my life. REDINK: What can we expect next from you? CB: I have a lot more to share! I have a whole album coming out and I’m already working in new material in Spanish. REDINK: Tell your fans something, a quote perhaps. CB: All the quotes that I can think of are a bit cheesy… Mmm a friend of mine said to me “love is a four letter word spelled T-I-M-E” it’s all about what we do with it.

This concludes our interview with Carmen Borla. “ An extremely multi-talented and driven person, who’s on the path for success.”RED INK Magazine. u Please follow Carmen on her social media platforms. IG: @carmenborla Twitter @BorlaCarmen
