PERFECT GIDDIMANI “Give Me My Flowers”
The Reggae world has come to expect a prolific output of songs from Giddimani Records and Reggae artist Perfect Giddimani but once again they have surpassed themselves.
In May 2023, Giddimani Records released 4 songs. The first “Respect Kampala” by Perfect Giddimani, produced by Reggae drummer and producer Dominik Gall with Reggaebeats, was released May 5th.
On May 12th “Third Eye” by Perfect Giddimani, also produced by Dominik Gall. The following week “Bless Me”, a collaboration between Perfect Giddimani and Ras Attitude, produced by Lion Riddims, goes out.
The final release in the last week in May was “Soul Confusion”, a collaboration between Perfect Giddimani and Ras Fraser Jr. “Soul Confusion” will also be on Ras Fraser Jr’s upcomng album, set for release by Wide Awake Music and Rebel Sound Records.
These releases from Giddimani Records will be building up to the release of Perfect Giddimani’s upcoming album, “Give Me My Flowers”, scheduled for release in the next couple of months. This will be Perfect Giddimani’s first solo album since his 2017 Billboard Reggae topping album “Live My Life Again”.
“One of Reggae music’s most unusual and fascinating artists. Perfect Giddimani, was born Greg Rose in Bamboo, St Ann, Jamaica. As with many Reggae artists, his mother sang in church, his grandfather also
had a banjo band, so he was exposed to music from birth. His father repaired jukeboxes so he had access to many genres of music including Soul, Country, Pop, and Reggae, and he would sing the songs back with the instrumental side of the records.
Perfect Giddimani started recording for many of the Kingston producers which resulted in an increase in radio play on the big Jamaican radio stations. He met producer Rebel Chris who gave him the riddim on which he recorded “Handcart Boy”, the single that catapulted him to fame worldwide. “Handcart Boy” hit the number one spot on the charts in Jamaica and Germany and was quickly followed by “All I’ve Got”, “No Badda Me” and “Johnny”. The success of these singles led to tours in Europe, the USA, and South America, hitting some of the major festivals including Summerjam, Rototom Sunsplash, Reggae Jam, and also Reggae On The River and Sierra Nevada World Music Festival in California.
To date, Perfect Giddimani has released 13 albums and hundreds of singles. His last album “Live My Life Again”, which was released in 2017, hit the number one spot on the Billboard chart, knocking off Damian Marley. Other more recent career highlights include “Rastafari Way”, a song he produced on his Giddimani Records label, being featured in the latest 2021 James Bond movie “No Time To Die” and his song “Ganja Spliff” from his first album “Giddimani” featured in the movie version of “Nash Bridges”, also in 2021.
4 RED INK MAGAZINE 4
At present Perfect Giddimani is completing his latest album “Give Me My Flowers” with producers Andrew Moon Bain and David (Jah David) Goldfine from Zion
I Kings and Laurent (Tippy) Alfred from I-Grade Records out of the US Virgin Islands. The album is scheduled for release in early 2023. With his scintillating stage presence, Perfect Giddimani continues to be in great demand for shows and festivals.
Perfect Giddimani started as a roots artist and will always be considered a roots artist although, as the music scene changes, some of his songs are recorded on Dancehall beats. Even as he changes with the music environment, Perfect Giddimani always stays true to his conscious, positive lyrics. In his words “We keep it 100% clean, conscious and with a message”.

NIGHTLIFE OUT HOTSPOTS
TINA TURNER
Legendary Diva gone at age 83
Tina Turner, the legendary artist who was as equally blessed with success as she was cursed with challenging living situations, died Wednesday May 24th of natural causes after battling serious health complications for several years, including intestinal cancer and stroke and kidney failure. If nothing else, Tina Turner was a fighter. She was born, Anna Mae Bullock on November 26, 1939, to a pair of cotton picking share croppers. Her early life was plagued by feuding parents who ultimately left each other and their children abandoning her and her older sister when she was only 10years old. She was then raised by her grandmother until she died when Tina was 16; she then briefly reunited with her mother until in 1957 at the age of 18, she met Ike Turner and his band, “Kings of Rhythm” at a nightclub and she got her big break out of the blue. The band handed her the microphone
during an intermission between sets to allow some audience participation and when Ike heard her sing he asked her to be the featured vocalist for his band. During this time she performed under the stage name Little Ann and made her first studio recorded song, Boxtop. Soon after this Ike wanted Anna to come up with a catchier stage name and soon after Tina was born, she took inspiration for the name from the show Sheena, Queen of the Jungle.
The Ike and Tina story was not a fairy tale by any stretch and as matter of fact even amongst the band Ike was not Tina’s first choice. She actually had her first child with Raymond Hill the band’s saxophonist. Btu soon after that in a twist of fate she wound up breaking up with Raymond and moving in with Ike Turner to help him raise his two sons, and eventually a relationship evolved from their domestic situation. Continues..on page 8

Continued...from page 8
This relationship soon turned very destructive, with Ike Turner aggressively abusing her and humiliating her whenever she disagreed with him, he used to beat her with his wooden shoe stretcher until her face swelled. But all of this was behind the scenes and only known to those close to the duo, until later coming out in Tina’s best-selling memoir I, Tina which was released in 1986. This horror story was going on behind the scenes, all the while, the singing duo of Ike and Tina Turner was touring as one of the greatest music duos that ever performed.
In 1960, Ike and Tina released their debut single, “A Fool in Love,” which was an instant hit, reaching the Top 30 on the Billboard Hot 100. Then they released their first Grammy nominated hit the next year, “It’s Gonna Work Out Fine.” During the first half of the 1960’s they toured together tirelessly, filling concerts with a diverse crowd appealing to both black and white audiences. They were married in Tijuana in 1962, it was Ike’s 6th marriage, and in a later interview in the 1980’s Tina admitted that she must have been brainwashed to marry him. During the tour, however the abuse continued as well as rampant cheating, with Ike not only sleeping with dozens of other women but also writing songs about them. This proved to be one of the breaking points for Tina, she refused to perform and sing the songs that she knew were written about other women in Ike’s bed. This refusal to perform led to more aggressive beatings and abuse. And eventually in 1969 Tina ran away from Ike and actually hid from him until their divorce was finalized years later, getting assistance from many friends in the celebrity world that she had made over the years. In subsequent interviews and in her memoirs, Tina explained that a big reason she stayed with Ike as long as she did, was because she did not want to sink his career by leaving him without a lead singer, she was afraid of the guilt she would feel for destroying someone else’s career, but eventually the need for survival and sanity drove her to make the right choice.
The relationship with Ike was beneficial in one way for Tina, and that was the many doors that had opened for her during the tour. In 1966, they did the now-legendary rock TV show, The TNT Show, whose musical director was producer Phil Spector. This led to them opening for the Rolling Stones in 1969 during the band’s U.S. tour. Then they went on to sing the cover of Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Proud Mary,” which won Tina her first Grammy award for best R&B Vocal Performance by a Group. However, the success was short-lived at first, because it was based on a duo, and Tina Turner initially had trouble gaining traction as a solo performer. So much so, that she was stuck playing lounge and hotel gigs for a few years, she had huge money troubles due the tour being cancelled when she left Ike and did what she needed for her and her children to survive. She also took to Buddhism and prayer as her primary support system. . The beginning of Tina Turner’s reign as the Queen of Rock and
Roll began in 1982, when she was recruited by a British Synth-pop band Heaven 17 to remake the Temptations’ “Ball of Confusion.” This song led to a new record deal with Capitol Records , and shortly after she recorded her most famous song of all time, Private Dancer, which sat at #1 at the top of the Pop Charts in the U.S. for three weeks straight. Then came “What’s Love Got to do With it,” another smash hit. But it wasn’t just the voice that sold her music; it was her new image that was hugely successful with the younger 80’s and 90’s generations on MTV and in concerts. Tina’ proved that the 40’s were the new 20’s with her incredible body being showcased in tights and fishnet stockings for the world to see how beautiful a strong woman can be. She went on to win 12 Grammy awards, including a lifetime achievement Grammy, and a Hollywood Star on the walk of fame and dozens of other prestigious awards in music. She shares the record with Pat Benatar and Sheryl Crow for most awards (four) given for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance. And she is the only female artist to have won a Grammy in the pop, rock, and R&B fields; and she is in the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame and even received accolades and the prestigious Kennedy Center Honors from President George W. Bush who commented on her "natural skill, her energy and sensuality,” and he referred to her legs as "the most famous in show business." She was also a part of the world famous multi artist song We are the World, and performed alongside Mick Jagger at Live Aid.
10 RED INK MAGAZINE
Tina Turner also expanded her career into movies from 1975 onward. She debuted her acting career in 1975 as the Acid Queen in Ken Russell’s film Who’s Tommy. Later she would star alongside Mel Gibson as the villain, Auntie Entity, in the hit movie Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome. And two songs from that soundtrack went on to become great hits as well; “We Don’t Need Another Hero” and “One of the Living.” Additionally her survival and rise to success after decades of horrible Domestic Abuse became a rallying cry in pop culture for women’s rights and protection from abuse. Her memoir I, Tina, brought this horrible offense which far too often remained hidden in the background up to the surface and
into the public eye, especially when her book was adapted into the movie, “What’s Love Got to Do with It,” which received critical acclaim.
Tina Turner was one of the most successful female recording artists of all time, selling more than 100 million records, and topping the charts across Britain and the U.S. , however her story of survival in the face of aggressive abuse has become an inspiration to women all over the world, that previously felt hidden and unseen. Anna Mae Bullock, aka Tina Turner, You were more than a rock star and movie actress, you were a hero and inspiration to people the world over. Your fight is over, may you rest in peace.

REGGAE IN THE DESERT
Celebrated 20th Anniversary in beautiful Las Vegas
As a 6 year resident of Las Vegas, I look forward to the annual Reggae In The Desert festival. Even though the lineup is usually not announced when pre-sale tickets go on sale, I know from experience that it always features an excellent selection of artists so I get my ticket early. This year, being the 20th anniversary of the festival, did not disappoint, with headliners such as Morgan Heritage, The Wailers, and Romain Virgo
In the past few years when the festival was held in June, the heat has been a factor. Last year Mr Vegas had issues with his DJ’s laptop overheating and the same thing happened to Kabaka Pyramid’s keyboard player a few years ago and only the most resilient fans would brave the scorching temperatures to stand in front of the stage before the sun went down. This year the promoters moved the festival to the beginning of May which resulted in a much more comfortable experience without any heat-related problems.
The festival started at 11 am and opened with 2 local acts. Bounce Cruz, a talented Guam transplant, did an acoustic set, and the upcoming Reggae band Driftone, who describe their sound as “spicy Reggae”, successfully hyped up the crowd for the next performance by Bonafide, a Jamaican band comprised of four brothers who are now based in Las Vegas.
12 RED INK MAGAZINE
Bonafide are recipients of a Congressional Commendation in recognition of their community work in Las Vegas. They could be considered Reggae Ambassadors for Las Vegas. They showcased new material from their upcoming E.P. and delighted the audience with collaborations featuring Damian ‘Jr Gong’ Marley and Vybz Kartel. Bonafide was supported by a newcomer to Las Vegas, Jamaican Reggae/Dancehall DJ known as Problem. The band, currently under new management, was warmly welcomed by the crowd and appeared to be on an upward trajectory in their career.
When you have the likes of artists such as Romain Virgo, The Wailers, and Morgan Heritage on the lineup you have expectations of a good festival but I often find somewhere in the middle of the program there is an artist that takes control of the crowd, and delivers an unforgettable performance.
In 2019 it was Jesse Royal, who mesmerized the audience with his stage presence. This year that artist was Junior Toots, the son of the late Toots Hibbert from Toots and the Maytals. From the moment he took the stage, he captivated the audience with renditions of his father’s songs with a sprinkling of his own songs in the mix. The crowd enthusiastically sang along to Toots and The Maytals’ classics like Pressure Drop and Monkey Man. To everyone’s delight, Junior Toots even jumped the barrier and spent several minutes dancing and singing in the crowd, he had them eating out of his hand. Backed by the talented FaYahSquad Band, this was a performance to remember. The words “brilliant” and “wicked performance” could be heard not only by the crowd but by other artists in attendance.
https://youtu.be/OBXTSFRcR_M Continues...on page 14
13 RED INK MAGAZINE
Continued...from page 13
Following Junior Toots was the gracious, elegant Hempress Sativa who entertained us with her beautiful voice and conscious lyrics. She captivated the crowd with the ease she delivered her unique Roots Reggae with a mix of other genres. The crowd was quiet and entranced by the vibe emanating from the stage from this barefoot warrior of consciousness.
Next in the lineup was the incredibly talented and accomplished Romain Virgo. His consummate professionalism, remarkable vocal talent, and more laid-back vibe were precisely what the audience needed at that moment. Fans enthusiastically took over the vocals on his hit songs, solidifying Romain Virgo as a popular addition to the festival. His band was exceptional and his backup singers were among the finest to emerge from Jamaica. Overall, Romain Virgo delivered the type of performance that you come to expect from him.
The penultimate act at Reggae In The Desert was none other than The Wailers. Led by Aston Barrett Jr, son of original Wailer, Aston “Family Man” Barrett, The Wailers took us on a trip down memory lane by performing the iconic songs made famous by Bob Marley and The Wailers. While it is common for Reggae artists to include a Bob Marley song in their set at festivals, it was particularly
special to witness an entire set dedicated to Bob Marley and The Wailers' songs.
To close out the 20th Reggae In The Desert, Morgan Heritage took the stage and delivered the stellar performance that this legendary group is known for. They treated the crowd to a mix of their best-known Grammy-nominated and Grammy-winning songs, as well as tracks from their newly released album “The Homeland”. It was a perfect conclusion to the festival, leaving the audience thoroughly satisfied.
In conclusion, the only disappointment of the festival was the non-appearance of the publicized veteran DJ, EekA-Mouse, which was beyond the control of the festival promoters due to delays in his performance visa processing by the immigration department. I only have two criticisms of the festival, one being the limited availability of water to purchase. There was only one vendor selling cans of water at a ridiculous price and considering that we are a desert community, I believe there should have been more options available. The other criticism pertains to the amount of time between acts which was attributed to technical issues. Despite these minor setbacks, the festival was overall a resounding success, executed with precision and enough to rank Reggae In The Desert as one of the premier Roots Reggae festivals.

June will bring Aries a strong desire to travel and meet new people. Due to unfinished work, you will feel light fatigue and demotivation to work. However, don't let stress control you and go for a drink with friends who will help you clear your head and cheer you up. Maybe you will organise a long-awaited vacation or trip together.
This month, Taurus will struggle with negative thoughts and attitudes to life. Old blocks that you have been carrying for a long time will start to surface and may even cause mental problems associated with depression. Don't be devastated by it and, on the contrary, try to take it as a great opportunity for change, especially in your personal and love life.
June will bring Gemini the ability and desire to learn new things that will bring you a lot of success at work, so do not be afraid to ask about a salary increase. This period directly encourages you to plan an exotic holiday, where you will have time to study foreign languages and learn about a new culture.
June will be a month of love for Cancer. During this period, you will feel very confident and attractive, which will work as an aphrodisiac for others, and they will not take their eyes off you. You have a unique opportunity to choose, so do not be afraid to be demanding and use this opportunity to establish new relationships or only casual flirts.
June will support Leo in the affected behaviour. You will get into situations that will infuriate you and awaken in you very strong emotions that you will not be able to cope with. In addition, you will take everything more personally than ever before, which will just support your emotional outbursts.
June will not be a very happy month for Virgo. You will be depressed because you don't move anywhere in your life, and even though you try to do your best to change your thinking, you still can't. Change is a process, and it can take some time to master the new principles.
June will be a month full of uncertainty. Libra will begin to doubt themselves, and this will be reflected in their performance. You will need to be praised and reassured by your surroundings that you are doing well, which will get them bored after a while, though.
June will bring out some strong emotions in Scorpios. All the emotional experiences will be doubled in strength, so avoid the situations that could be emotionally demanding and instead focus on things that bring you joy.
June will be the month when Sagittarians will let their past go and start a new phase of life when they focus only on a present moment. You will meet someone who will show you the way which you will later decide to follow. This person shows up in your life for a certain reason, so perceive him as your guide and try to absorb as much information and advice he gives you as you can.
June will bring a lot of tenderness and feelings to Capricorns. This will evoke a desire for a stable relationship in you. You will be lucky this month, and you will have lots of opportunities to meet your soulmate and partner.
In June, Aquarians will feel free. Finally, you will be able to get rid of your past and just flow in the present moment. Your unique sense of humour will attract the attention of many people, and by your sex appeal, you will amaze people of the opposite gender. In this month, regarding your social life, you will be able to get anything you want. But you will have a tendency to misuse it.
June will bring a lot of changes to the lives of Pisces. Those changes can be for the better or worse as well. Nevertheless, it is only up to you how you will approach those situations. Nothing will be a problem for you this month. You should use the fact that you are so straightforward and exactly do what you will feel like at the given moment.
