STEVE HARWELL

Smash Mouth Founding Lead Singer, died at 56

Steven Scott Harwell was born on January 9th , 1967 in Santan Clara, California. He died at the unfortunate young age of 56 on September 4th, 2023. He was one of the founders and the lead singer of the hit 90’s Rock group Smash Mouth. He founded the band in 1994 with fellow band members Greg Camp, Kevin Coleman, and Paul De Lisle. They achieved meteoric success with their instant hit Walkin’ on the Sun in 1997. And then in 1999 they recorded their most well-known song AllStar, which I am sure most readers can hear in their head as they are reading this since it was one of the biggest ear worm songs going into the new Millenium. Under then lead of Steve Harwell, Smash Mouth sold over 10 Million albums worldwide.

Steve was a great singer, but he had his share

of demons and faced an extreme battle with alcoholism for most of his life. In 2013 he was diagnosed with severe damage to his heart, liver and other organ systems and in 2016 he collapsed in the middle of a show. He retired due to health concerns in 2021 after his last concert in New York where he was reportedly drunk to the point of being belligerent towards staff and fans. He was placed on hospice one day before passing peacefully in his home surrounded by family and friends due to liver failure. Alcoholism is a horrible illness and I hope this tragic young death can be a shining beacon to others in the industry to get help with their own addictions. Steve Harwell, you were an epic vocalist, and your memory will live on forever in your songs that have captivated millions of people around the world. Your life was ended far too soon, may you rest in peace.

JIMMY BUFFETT

Singer and Icon known for Margaritaville, Dead at 76

Jimmy Buffett, was born, James William Buffett, on Christmas Day, December 25th 1946 in Pascagoula, Mississippi. He is the Iconic Folk, Rock, Country, Calypso singer known for the mega hits Margaritaville and Cheeseburger in Paradise. Jimmy lost his battle with a rare form of skin cancer, Merkel cell carcinoma on September 1st, 2023. Jimmy was an incredible singer but surprisingly only had one song that made it to the top 10 chart and that was Magaritaville in 1977. However, that did not stop him from creating an empire worth several hundred million dollars, almost reaching a billion. You would be hard pressed to find someone who was not familiar with his music, clothing line, restaurants or hotels. His iconic parrots and island lifestyle themes have been a part of households around the globe. His music style was such a unique fusion made of Rock, Country, Folk and Calypso tones. It truly resonated with beachgoers all around the world. All in all with 30 albums released by Jimmy Buffett, eight are certified gold and nine are certified platinum or multiplatinum and sales accounted for over 20 million albums in all.

RED INK MAGAZINE 8

Jimmy Buffett was a true icon, and aside from the masses, he became a cult hero of sorts for his followers called the Parrot Heads and they follow him and his band the Coral Reefers around like a religion, similar to the Dead Heads that followed the Grateful Dead. A religion of Beach life and relaxation. His songs like Cheeseburger in Paradise, Margaritaville and Lime in the Coconut, truly embodied this spirit and as such were his greatest hits.

He turned his number one song into a legacy and an empire. The Margaritaville Restaurants can be found all around the world, predominantly in Caribbean Island Nations, and his hotel chain is iconic as well, Margaritaville Resorts are in several major vacation destination locations. And he also partnered with casinos in Vegas, Biloxi, MS and Louisiana. And he developed an iconic retirement community that spawned locations in multiple states and is in itself valued at over a billion dollars, called Latitude Margaritaville. Continues...on page 10

The first of which opened in Daytona Beach, FL. He is also cofounder of a world famous beer that is a staple of every major bar and retailer in the United States, called Land Shark. His empire also includes clothing line and a Caribbean Cruise Line. It is clear that business sense and entrepreneurial talent was Jimmy’s true power and he used it well.

Jimmy Buffet died at age 76 after losing his battel

with cancer and it was far too early, seeing how much potential his empire still had for growth and seeing how his fan base has grown year over year.

Jimmy, your legacy will forever live on in your fans and through your iconic image. You brought peace to countless souls throughout your lifetime, may you find the same and rest in peace with a drink in hand and your toes in the sand in the hereafter.

ERIKA NORIEGA

Amazing Artist contemplating the beauty of the obvious

Iwas born in Peru in a mixed-race family. Growing up in Lima during a time of terrorism; basic resources were very limited, to the point that when I was a kid, there was only one brand of milk available in the market, and my parents had to wait in long lines for that basic staple kind of groceries.

As you can imagine, I didn’t have access to much variety of art materials. Either you couldn’t find them, or you had to pay a good amount of money for them. To be an artist was never an option for me, but instead it was a condemnation of poverty and considered a waste of time. The priority was to survive the day by working hard to get enough money for food and living accommodations.

Creativity was not encouraged at school either, instead, it was more about obeying the rules and preparing yourself for a corporate life by following certain standards that would guarantee success in life. These include things like making sure you wore your uniform with the skirt exactly 2 fingers below your knees, knowing all the lyrics to the catholic prayers and showing appreciation to native folkloric dances, because otherwise you were not a proud Peruvian. Being half Japanese (I should mention that my dad is ALSO mixed), always made me a foreigner in my own country. It’s funny, in Latin America, anyone with Asian features is considered “chino/a” (Chinese).

As a young teenager, I used to hate being called a “china” because to me, I was Peruvian, and my Asian features came from my mother’s Japanese blood! So, I used to get angry and frustrated trying to explain why people were wrong in their assumptions.

But I was never good with words. In fact, I never felt that my words communicated at all how I saw things. The need for expression was building up, and just like a volcano about to erupt, one day I grabbed some cheap school temperas and (for the surprise of my parents) I painted all the walls and the ceiling of my shared room. I felt unstoppable then. I felt like I finally found the voice that I needed to allow me to share my view with others, and it was awesome.

But one day, I realized I was growing up and needed to make decisions. I had to apply what they taught me in school and get my own grown up life: Get a job, find stability, pay your insurance, drink enough water; all those grown up things. When I moved to LA during the 2020 pandemic, I found the opportunity to pick up on a passion that I was almost forced to put aside. Just like a platonic lover that for some reason you cannot get together with for good.

One happy day, my husband took me to Michael’s for the very first time… $500 later, I was crying overwhelmed with emotion because I felt re-united with that “lover,” and I knew that this time would be for good. My art has continued to change and grow up with me. It started as a tool for criticism, a desperate call for attention, my voice that so badly wanted to be heard.

Now, it is teaching me lessons, helping me grieve, communicate, heal and most recently, helping me to slow down my life and contemplate the beauty of the obvious: a flower, a sunset, a face. Continues...on page 14

RED INK Magazine had the pleasure of interviewing Erika Noriega This is what she told us.

REDINK: Who or what influenced you to become an artist and at what age did it all began?

EN: I have always been fascinated by art in all its forms, and beauty in general.

It all started as a kid growing up in a complicated time and place: my family was struggling and my home country was constantly under terrorist attacks.

I guess I always dreamed of better times, and painting was that little window for me to create that fantasy world where everything was prettier. It was my voice, my escape and my comfort.

REDINK:Tell us some of your struggles in the business, if any.

EN: In my case, the lack of access to art materials in my home country (either too expensive or unavailable), and to have to choose to either create art, or to work in an office, (which was considered to be the "smarter" option to guarantee success in life) always made it difficult to even explore my art. So, I did, I dedicated most of my life to working in different fields, and art was just a way to find relief from my job and life. It was a way to communicate what I could not express with words, a desperate voice that wanted to be heard.

It all changed when I moved to LA: one sunny day, my husband took me to Michael’s for the first time... $500 later, I was crying with emotion because I knew I would be unstoppable. I felt reunited to a passion and I knew then it would be for good. I knew I would never stop painting again.

REDINK: Do you have a favorite project that you worked on; that you’re most proud of?

EN:For me fashion has always been a positive influence. I had served in quite a few different professional and I’ve always gone back to fashion it's basically the only thing that kept me going However I believe that there's not enough door's or opportunity opening for minority designer's like my self,so if you don't have the full support of sponsors/ banker's then I think it's going to takes a much

longer time for one to succeed in reaching there intentional goals and aspirational goals.

REDINK: Tell us something about yourself, a quote perhaps.

EN: I did a painting based on a movement called “Ni Una Menos”. The movement was iterated as opposition to femicide and violence against women. The name Ni Una Menos can be roughly translated to "Not One [Woman] Less." This refers to not wanting any more women to die, be sexually abused or be assaulted as a result of gender-based violence.

That painting has inspired others who felt identified with the concept, and some women have asked me to create different versions of the painting using their own body as the subject as a reminder of their own value.

14 RED INK MAGAZINE

REDINK: Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

EN: This is going to sound silly, but since I was a little girl (and a big Disney fan!) the quote: “A dream is a wish your heart makes” has been something that I believed in. No matter how difficult things may look, or how stuck we may feel, whatever you wish with all your heart can happen. Nothing is impossible, as long as you truly believe in it and work towards that goal.

REDINK: Tell us what you are working on now.

EN:I see myself becoming an inspiration to other people to follow their passions, teaching children to explore their talents and putting smiles on people’s faces with my art.

REDINK: What can we expect next?

EN: Something big… stay tuned! ;)

This concludes our interview with Erika Noriega

West Coast Rapper Snoop Dogg has released a strawberry-infused GIN called INDOGGO

Calvin “Snoop Dogg” Broadus, simply put, is an icon and legend of Hip Hop. With a career spanning over 25 years, he has released hit after hit, and is an ever-constant presence in pop culture. Snoop has stayed extremely relevant and, now more than ever, has built a significant multi-cultural and cross-generational following.

In 1994 he wrote "Gin & Juice:” it was about good feelings and real experiences; it just naturally became a global anthem. Snoop has always wanted to create his own spirits brand, so it was only fitting that he created the world’s best tasting gin. In his quest for flava, he remixed seven botanicals, and infused natural fruit flavors, thus creating his masterpiece.

This juicy gin, with its laidback California style, is like no other gin in the world. It’s gluten free, low calorie with no sugar, and will leave you wanting more. Easy to mix, easy to drink, hard to forget.

Healthy Eating AT THE HEART OF THE MATTER

Hello again RED INK foodies! In this issue we hope you enjoy our wonderful recipe selection for this month. We are always happy to share with our readers a fun recipe for you to try. Enjoy!

Instructions:

Step 1

Begin by preheating the oven to 350 degrees F.

Step 2

Prepare three 9-inch cake pans by spraying them with nonstick cooking spray.

Step 3

Cream the butter until fluffy.

Step 4

Mix in the sugar and cream for 8 minutes.

Step 5

One at a time, add the eggs. Cream the mixture after each.

Step 6

Add the flour and buttermilk in 1 cup increments of the flour and 1/2 cup increments for the buttermilk, alternating between the two and beginning and ending with the flour. Mix after every addition.

Step 7

Add in the vanilla and beat well.

Step 8

Divide the batter among the pans and bake for about 25-30 minutes.

Step 9

Turn the cake out of the pans onto cooling racks, allowing them to fully cool.

Step 10

While the cakes cool, mix together the sugar, buttermilk, shortening, butter, and baking soda in a 3-4 quart cast iron dutch oven on the stovetop over medium heat.

Step 11

Swirl the pan, consistently moving the ingredients.

Step 12

Cook the mixture until it reaches 235-245 degrees F on a candy thermometer. It should have a beautiful caramel color that isn't too dark.

Step 13

Remove the icing from the heat and beat with a wooden spoon until it is ready to spread and has a creamy consistency.

Step 14

Ice the cakes with the caramel icing and serve! Enjoy!

Aquarius (Jan 20 - Feb 18)

Pisces (Feb 19 - Mar 20)

In October, Aries will become creative not only in work but also in personal life. Take full advantage of this ability, and don't be afraid to make big changes. Embark on a long-planned renovation or change your dressing style. Also, at work, you will be full of original ideas and thanks to that, you will become the centre of attention.

October will be a great opportunity for Taurus to make new friendships or even love relationships. During this period, you will be very charismatic, and you will become a favourite among people. Communication will be your strong point, and you will definitely not miss the empathy, thanks to which you will build a deeper bond with some of your friends.

October will focus on planning and important decisions. Gemini will be clear about their priorities, so it is the best time to set your goals and plan how to make them happen. Patience will become your strong point, thanks to which it will be a piece of cake for you to really pursue your goals. At the same time, you will be open to personal development, so reading books on this topic will be a good choice.

In October, Cancer will get out of the bubble, and they will stand out among other people thanks to their unique jokes. You will have very prompt reactions and good arguments, which will dazzle not only your co-workers, but practically everyone will eat out of your hand. During this period, you will become intellectuals whose speeches will always make sense.

October will be a month full of love and good relationships for Leo. You will be brimming with a good mood, laughter and great ideas. You will attract the attention of others thanks to your immediacy. If you do not have a partner, go with your intuition and feelings, which will play a big role in your actions during this period. This autumn month will also awaken your spiritual perception.

In October, Virgo will long for solitude and peace. This month, you will focus mainly on yourself. You have a lot of unresolved questions that need to be closed, and this period will be perfect for that. You will also be inclined to alternative directions, so do not be afraid to go in the opposite direction and visit a seminar, where you will learn new things.

October will bring peace to Libra. You will be more introverted this month, so your friends and acquaintances will step aside. You will immerse yourself in setting priorities. The artistic soul will also awaken in you, so this period will directly encourage activities such as painting in nature, playing a musical instrument or dancing.

In October, Scorpios will be full of empathy and will have amazing communication skills. Understanding your friends' problems will be your strength, so people around you will feel your support and will ask you for help if they need it. Also, you will give an impression of a very calm and balanced person, which will help you both at work and in your private life.

In October, Sagittarians will feel a big need to create and upgrade their homes. The environment where you live and spend the most of your time will be very important to you this month. So whether you live alone or with your partner, you should please yourself and make your dreams happen in this area.

With October coming, Capricorns will start separating from the outside world. You will feel fulfilled when being outside in nature, preferably somewhere by the water where there is a lot of fresh air. You will sort out your thoughts, and you will seek inner peace and harmony. The best things you can do to achieve this are meditations and yoga.

In October, Aquarians should be careful at work because their boss might try to get you and prove that you do something wrong. So do not give him/her a chance and show him/her that even though you are taking everything with humour, you are still perfect at work. You will be open in changes of ways of thinking.

In October, Pisces will take too much on their shoulders, and they will not be on top of it at all. At the same time, you will expect too much from yourself, which will make the whole situation worse, and you will start feeling despair.
