SANDRA DAY O’CONNOR “First” female judge on the Supreme Court, has died at 93

S

andra Day O’Connor was born March 26th, 1930 and died from complications related to Dementia on December 1st, 2023. Sandra Day O’Connor was the first woman to ever sit on the Supreme Court. Sandra is a woman who will live on forever in the Annals of History. She forever broke the glass ceiling that was in place at the United States Supreme Court and in the world of Legal Proceedings forever. Because of her appointment to the Supreme Court, by President Ronald Reagan, countless young girls and women have been inspired to become lawyers, judges and Supreme Court Justices over the last four decades. When she was appointed President Ronald Reagan Called her, “truly a person for all seasons, possessing those unique qualities of temperament, fairness, intellectual capacity, and devotion to the public good which have characterized the 101 brethren who have preceded her.” Even though, his peers, and political opponents, tried to slander his decision to change the “norm” he stood by his decision and was always supportive of his Supreme Court Nominee. She stood proudly in that role from 1981 until her retirement in 2006. 4

RED INK MAGAZINE

The Road to the Supreme Court was not easy, and the first ever “media political circus” soon began when Sandra’s confirmation hearing became the first televised Supreme Court Justice Confirmation Hearing in history. After being affirmed she pretty much towed party lines, supporting other conservative Justice opinions, with one exception. She supported the preservation of Roe v. Wade and the right of women to control their reproductive choices, including abortion. This was one of the few anti-conservative opinions that she supported. But remember first and foremost, she was a woman and understood the values and needs of women far better than any of the men that made up the other Justices. Sandra’s career set in motion changes that would ultimately change the dynamic of the Supreme Court forever and since her appointment five other women have made it to the Supreme Court including four that are cur-

rently sitting right now, making the Supreme Court four women and five men. Something that prior to 1981 would have been unfathomable. After her retirement she continued an illustrious career as the next Chancellor of the College of William & Mary, where she succeeded Henry Kissinger. And in 2009, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama. Truly a woman among giants. Sandra Day O’Connor shattered the glass ceiling in the political world forever changing the landscape and opening doors for girls and woman everywhere to reach previously unthinkable levels of power and success. You were a true hero and patriot, and will forever be remembered in the History books as a woman who opened the door for woman and young girls to truly have a say in the laws that govern our land. Rest in Peace Good Madam.

MARCUS GLENN Jazz influenced Artist from Detroit

M

arcus Glenn is proudly a Detroit native – born and raised. His studio has long been in the heart of Corktown – the oldest neighborhood in the Motor City. He has commissioned works of art hanging in exclusive private and public collections throughout the world. He is one of the most widely collected contemporary artists, and his collectors eagerly await each new creation. Marcus’ first introduction to art was at the age of five when his kindergarten teacher asked him to illustrate a board in the classroom. He says his mother enjoyed painting and fostered Marcus’ creativity as he grew by always making art supplies readily available throughout the house. As a teen, Marcus won a full scholarship to the city’s prestigious Center for Creative Studies. Although he says he didn’t quite connect at the school, it didn’t stop him from endlessly drawing, cartooning, painting and creating. He became the first AfricanAmerican and the youngest cartoonist in the Detroit

8

News. As a freelance cartoonist, his comic strip “Double Trouble” was published daily in the News and ran for three years. In 1988, at the age of 20, Glenn participated in his first public art exhibition hosted by Gerald Marant Gallery and former Detroit Pistons player, John Salley. The group exhibition featured nationally known artists Annie Lee, Carl Owens and Gilbert Young. Marcus has sold artwork in nearly 70 different countries to thousands of art enthusiasts. His artwork “One Nite Outta This World” was selected as the official art for the 56th Annual Grammy Awards held in Los Angeles in January 2014. Glenn was also the official artist of the 2014 Amelia Island Jazz Festival. In his studio, he’ll work for 14 hours without eating or leaving, unaware until his wife calls him to attention. For the artist, though, painting is incredibly liberating, removing all of his stress. Without painting, Marcus says his life would be boring and unfulfilled.

RED INK MAGAZINE

Marcus credits his artistic skills as God-given ability and to studying artists like Picasso, Jacob Lawrence, Romare Bearden, Benny Andrews and Ernie Barnes. His work deals with issues that continue to fascinate him, such as the creative process of making art, the solitary experience of the artist, the dialog between art and the viewer, and music (mostly jazz). Known for his use of bright colors and his expressive use of paper and fabric, Marcus creates a masterful textured collage effect. He fascinates viewers by inviting them into his realm of colorful and unique imagery. While he gets a good amount of his supplies from local art stores, the fabrics he uses are often passed through his family. Marcus combines painting and sculpture in a bas-relief effect, calling his style “Flat Life,” which he has developed for more than a decade. Marcus is always trying to further refine this style by enhancing his technique and taking his collages to the next level. Marcus paints with “the palette of God,” something that kept him grounded when his career began to spike. His works are peppered with symbolism, most apparent in his colorful floorboards, which jut at different angles in a spectrum of colors and provide a “foundation of love” for humankind. His figures are animated and mannerist in approach, often stretching and twisting into impossible positions. Marcus says that he elongates his figures, breathing life into their instruments as they become one through the element of jazz. His works are heavily jazz-infused. Although not a musician himself, when he was growing up, his father was an avid jazz collector. Marcus remembers listening to the records, capturing that moment in time. When he began painting from these memories, he liberated the vision of the characters and instruments like the creativity within the jazz. He likes to paint straight on to board, rather than canvas, tearing paper and fabrics to build his collage. When creating his instruments and characters, he uses illustration board, sketching them first before they’re cut out, painted, and added to the work. Once it’s finished, he needs to live with it for two to three days, adjusting it later if necessary. Continues..on page 10

RED INK MAGAZINE

Continued...from page 8 Red Ink Magazine had the absolute pleasure of asking Marcus Glenn a few questions, this is what this creative, incredibly talented Artist had to tell us. REDINK: Who or what influenced you to become an artist and at what age did it all began? MG: My journey into the art world began at the tender age of four when my mother brought me a bundle of art supplies and drawing pads to keep me from drawing on my bed room walls. She saw I had a God given ability to be artistically creative, so she nurtured my passion. REDINK: From where do you get the inspiration for your amazing art pieces? MG: My inspiration began with visiting art museums on school field trips and being exposed to Egyptian art and artifacts along with the old masters. Now my inspiration comes from life experiences and the amazing impact that music has on all of our lives. REDINK: Tell us about your journey in the art world. MG: As a young inspiring artist, I recognized early on that it was important for me to have my own vision or identity, so that’s why I formed my own unique style called “FlatLife” in which you build off from the flat surface of the plane, creating this two dimensional illusion within the composition. Another facet of my artistic skills includes sculpture. During the covid pandemic I picked up that passion of mine and began sculpting, forming unique sculptures in a style or technique I call Hian’Bell, which stand for highly hand embellished sculpture. Growing up in Detroit with the rich culture of Motown music and Jazz I found out some of my favorite themes to paint comprised of music, and to my surprise I was chosen to be the official Visual artist for 2014, earning me a Grammy. REDINK: What are some pros and cons that you have encounter in the industry? MG: Not to much on either perspective. Reason being, art is a luxury and people have the freedom to appreciate art of their choice… so I try not to take my passion to seriously. REDINK: Are you currently working on a new art piece? MG: Yes. For me I find it easier to work on multiple

10

Marcus Glenn and wife Yolanda Glenn

pieces at a time and I find it helpful to work in a series, weather it’s paintings or sculptures. REDINK: Tell us about Parkwest Gallery. MG: When I formed a relationship with Parkwest Gallery some 28yrs ago of course they weren’t as large as they are today. Albert Scaglione the founder of Parkwest I found to be very passionate about the art world. He had a vision to take art to the masses and of course being a young inspiring artist I wanted the same thing, for my art to be appreciated by many. With the same vision in mind I decided to establish a relationship with the Gallery and who knew Parkwest would become one of the largest art gallery in North American. Looking back after 28yrs it’s been an amazing journey with an amazing Gallery/Museum. REDINK: Where do you see yourself in 10 years? MG: I hope to be still alive and very active in creating unique art and pushing my creative boundaries to a higher standard as well as having a active share in the art community. REDINK: What new can we expect from Marcus Glenn? MG: God willing, I hope to continue to be a pioneer in creating original art pieces in my unique style, FlatLife and Hian’Bell Sculptures. u This concludes our interview with Marcus Glenn.
