s an entertainment writer, I am always honored and enthusiastic when I get a chance to meet and witness a truly gifted, young and exciting as well as a beautiful, well grounded, multi-talented and an original superstar in the making, taking the 'world by storm'. From the Wind Pipes of The 'Windy City,' Lit'L Tic exhales a talent so wicked it will blow you away. Since the age of 12, Tic has opened a gift that The Music Industry has not been able to unwrap. Now at the tender age of 22 her style and delivery is a ripened fruit ready to be picked. Through out her ride of success and failures, Tic has been able to maintain her gifts of Recording, Writing, Acting, and Choreographing while she pours out a unique trait that exemplifies her versatile image. On her recent trip to New York, I met Lit'L Tic and her entourage, which included Tic, her dancers and her Manager, Ms. Jannalla Wadlington, at The E.A.R.S.(Emerging Artist Reaching For the Stars) Network Showcase and Seminar, held at The Pennsylvania Hotel. I was immediately impressed by her intelligence and the respect that she gave to RED INK Magazine. Also, the wisdom that she has about herself and the 'music business' itself. Her credential's as a Actress includes "For Steppa'z Only" playing a Latin Street Dancer and " When Thugs Cry" where she played an undiscovered artist

PARTY! Chicago, ILL. She has also opened for Twista, attended Missy Elliott's ' Project' Hip-Hop Boot Camp where she was a semi-finalist there and has performed at The Cottton Club, Coyote Ugly, and The Subterranean Club all of Downtown Chicago. I was honored that Tic allowed me a one on one 'Question and Answer' Session. Lets get to know her a bit more:

RED INK: I know your birthday is March 8th 1982, but could you tell us where you were born and what was it like growing up there? TIC: I was born in Chicago. That's where the tomboy came from because it was ghetto, that's how I started rapping because that's what I was around. RED INK: Was 12 the earliest age that you and your family realized that you had a gift and a love for performing or was there any signs before then? TIC: Well no, my mother didn't know about me rapping until I asked her to pray for me to make it as a rapper, by then I was 16 years old in high school. My brother Deon a.k.a.(Zone) knew early on because he taught me. I was only 12 at the time. RED INK: Can you share with us about your religious background, and how has God guided your life and career? TIC: We had to attend church every Sunday, no matter what .I grew up at First Christian Assembly. Therefore any thing I do I ask for guidance before I do it and I always thank God in advance with everything he blesses me with even the unknown. Contd...on Page 24

Boxer Lennox Lewis, Olympians Donald Quarrie and Veronica Campbell, are a few of the celebrities you can expect to be featured. Of course, you could not have a music video without dancers, now could you? Dancehall divas Kiva and Stacy alongside King Bogle are also among some of the guests making appearances. 'I'm A Jamaican' will be KC's fourth video to date. Judging from the success of the previous three, there seems to be no stopping this 'Jamaican' artist.. u Nuff thanks to Ms. Shilo a

“Gangsta Blues anya Stephens by Sheldon Riley aka 2wist

P

eople, I apologize for keeping you waiting for this one, but things get hectic sometimes nahmean? Let's get to it. Since Irie Jamborie I've been promising you the five minutes with Tanya Stephens jump-off well, here it is. It's no wonder why this outa orda sista ah me favorite "preformah". And if you had been at Roy Wilkins Park for the Irie Jamborie this past summer you would understand where I'm coming from. This young lady tore the place down! I mean it, if there was a roof on the park, that day it would have been ripped off. Reggae is a man's world, so it would seem but Tanya Stephens is that rare breed of witty, gutsy musically imaginative word player that takes us on a trip "Way Back" every time she grips the mike. Vivienne Tanya Stephenson's career kicked off like so many others, By Photo getting busy on the corner with her peeps rocking freestyle after freestyle. Her early influences were a "mixed bag" though, being the second to last of seven kids, she listened to whatever everyone else in the house was listening to at the time. From Smokey Robinson, Buddy Holly & the Crickets, to American R&B music. Calypsonians like Kitchner and The Mighty Sparrow helped her to develop her witty repartee. I discovered what they were talking about at an early age. She recalls. Singing on the mic at local sound system dances completed her musical training and it wasn't long before she dropped her first track, '93's Is This For Real." Included in producer

Barry O'Hare's Further East compilation, the tune announced the coming of a true songstress, a certified maverick among mavericks. "O'Hare's really a musician, he produced my first album. If I had gone to Kingston first, me woulda just jump pon a riddim." O'Hare produced 94's " Big Tiings A Gwan ," which set off a string of "rewind and come agains" for this tremendously talented sista- the title track " Love How Ya Body Tan," " Kick Way," established Tanya as an aggressive competitor armed with a gorgeous, rhythmic alto and a scathing wit. That same year a dose of extra motivation came in the form of a beautiful baby girl named Kelly. Then, in '97, something strange happened. A compilation of Tanya's hit singles as well as new tracks that were actually demos, named "Too Hype" y ograph slipped past quality t o h P ade control and was released TaylorM without her consent. Among the tracks on this cd were initial recordings of "Goggle" and" Yuh Nuh Ready (Fe This Yet Buoy)" - giving the females another reason to brandish the spoils of this war of the genders. At this time, female empowerment was the cause, and Tanya Stephens was the effect. In 1998 she gave us Rough Rider which was a hit on every level, yielding "119", " Part-time Lover" (a bow to Stevie Wonder but entirely Tanya's), " Think It Over," " Man Fe Rule," and " Draw Fe Mi Finga" " Big Ninja Bike" poked fun at dudes who say they get busy but can't do the work. I spoke to Tanya at the Irie Jamborie this past summer and this is what she had to say: Contd...page 24 9

Maxi

A Legend in the makin’

F

or years now, music critics and so called 'experts' have been telling us a variety of musical genres, and little room for common ground. Tell that to Maxi Priest

I dare you, because the answer you're going to get is that music is universal. It is a fundamentally instinctual human behavior to embrace music and rhythms that are meaningful to you no matter what your background. Having an open mind came naturally for the second youngest of nine children. Having a dad as a steelworker and a mom as a Pentecostal church missionary who had devoted her life to Christianity, oh and incidentally was the lead singer of the church choir. Young Maxi grew up listening to Gospel, Reggae, R&B as well as Pop music. Carpentry is like breathing to him, it's also the family business, that's why it came as no surprise that while building speaker boxes for a local reggae sound system, Maxi Priest began his crooning at live dancehall sessions with artists like Smiley Culture. I wonder if he knew that at this time that he was destined to rewrite history by taking music to an entirely new level, Thus gaining his worldwide recognition? He had no idea that when he and Paul "Barry Boom" Robinson got together to produce Philip Levis "Mi God Mi King" that it would be the first UK reggae tune to reach number one in Jamaica with legends Sly Dunbar, Robbie Shakespear and Willie Londo and released by Virgin records in the U.S. "Some guys have all the luck" A cover of Cat Stevens' classic "wild world" gave Maxi his first U.S. smash hit, a rootsy duet with Beres Hammond called "How can we ease the pain" showed everyone why he should be taken seriously. In 1990, he released "Bonafide" which went gold, and the single "Close to you" hit number one on the Billboard hot 100 singles chart, and number Two on the hot R&B singles chart. In 1991 Maxi's collaborations with Roberta Flack," Set the Night to Music" and "house call" with Shabba Ranks again took him to the top of the charts. In 1996 he dropped anther hit CD. In "Man with the fun" which Contained the crossover killer single "That Girl" featuring

PRIEST Shaggy was a Grammy nominating track that got nuff run on MTV with a Hype Williams directed video. Then in 1999 "combination" was released, and this wasn't a direct interpretation of Maxi's one world philosophy, then I don't know what it was. Why, I'll tell you, this album contained a soulful embrace of Regga, Hipho, R&B Rock,Jazz, and Pop rhythms along with song writing and production work by Sly and Robbie, Robert Livingston, Simon Law and Joe from "Mary's Got A Baby" featuring Beenie, to "She Wants to Dance" with Degree and Red Rat. And we can't forget "We Tomorrow's People" featuring the acclaimed acid jazz band Incognito. Well I had to know what's been going on in Maxi Priest's "One World" since then, and I was afforded the opportunity to find out on my birthday at Reggae Musicfest in the Nassau Coliseum. Check it out! 2: Talk to me sir. MP: In the middle of me eatin' my food, but it's all for real. It's all real I'm cool man it's good to be here. 2: Allow me if I might say so myself your performance was crazy! I felt like I was twelve years old again cleaning the house on Saturday morning while I'm listening to you. But seriously how long have you been in the business?

MP: Somebody told me that I've been the business for over twenty years now. But um, it doesn't feel like that to me. 2: Twenty years wow that's a two decade career and still going. What was your first release? MP: A song called "Hey Little Girl" that's way back, a lot of people don't even know. That's way back before anything. 2: that's deep, but I want to ask you, do you feel that now reggae artist are being respected more and or being paid more attention to by the industry or no? MP: I'm not sure about the world respect but, we gained a lot more audiences, you know we gained a lot more people. It's strange; it's a very strange time. Like, we've done a lot, we tend to do a lot, and then we do a lot to harm it. Contd....page 22

NASSAU COLISEUM

A NIGHT OF THE STARS

O

n November, 14th. The Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum was the scene for one of this year's biggest and brightest star-studded night of musical performances. The Reggae Music fest this night, for all intents and purposes, reggae's East meets West-Indies that is. This was also the night to see the time barrier get broken, because the past, present and future of reggae graced the same stage. From lovers' rock to Conscious music, Dancehall to empowerment, there was something for everyone. I mean who could resist the innovative drum and bass combination of Sly and Robbie the dynamic duo of progressive reggae by way of a rhythmic drum and bass partnership solidified in the late 1970's combined once again to take us on a musical journey through the 80's and 90's. Also the 9 year old show stoppers Baby Vinegar, who never ceases to amaze anyone proved yet again that she is definitely part of the future of reggae music. Then to hit the stage was the single most consistently successful female vocalist in the history of reggae music, who has recorded in every style of reggae music from Ska to a Rap crossover record. I'll give you a hint, her first recording to hit number one was a rock steady melody named "Feel Like Jumping" in 1968 and 1975 after an extensive tour of Europe, became one of Bob Marley's I-threes backing vocalists along with Rita Marley and Judy Mowatt. The young lady I'm referring to also gave us the "Electric Boogie" with Bunny Wailer in 1989. Yes people, I'm talking about Marcia Griffthis. Also performing that night, merging dancehall with a rootsy vibe. Richie Spice singing hits like "Grooving My Girl" and "Earth A Run Red" as well as cuts from his new album "Spice in your Life". And when I Wayne hit the stage, "One song alone couldn't satisfy the crowd" because they wanted more! Then it was time for a dynamic performance from a man who is small time in stature, but huge on stage presence as well as explosive in the area of vocal capabilities, Half Pint stopped by to treat us to the sounds of some his hits like "sally", "Winsome" and Substitute lover". Shortly thereafter the crowd was "Ambushed" by "Bitter Root" and motivated to "Do the Damn Thing" by the D.J. Skills of Trinidad's own Supa Chile, Then "a new Day" began as the "Messin Jah" A.K.A. Jephter McClymont A.K.A. the anointed one, Luciano led the crowd in the singing of "Sweep Over My Soul". Tony Rebel stopped by to remind us to clean up the dancehall With "Ghetto People Song" and "Signs of the Times". Then Grammy award winning, founding member of the Wailers Bunny Wailer showed us that "Time will tell" and that the memory of Bob Marley will live on. Although he had spent most of the nineties working on his own political party The United Progressive Party, but his latest album "communication" proves that he is still heaily involved in the forward movement of our people, "some Guys Have all the Luck" when you live in a "Wild World" as Max Elliot A.K.A. Maxi Priest drove the women mad. I'll give you sixteen bars Maxi Priest alittle later. The crowning Jewel of the night was Jimmie Cliffs' performance songs like "The Harder The Come" and "I Can See Clearly Now" and then a grand finale in which all of the performers were invited back to the stage. Oh yeah I almost forgot, the New Kingston Band has done it again backing every act including their dad, Delivered an outstanding an performance as usual. I'd like to thank legendary Records, like Dinicio, Linkup Media man like Squeeze and Platinum Mic Entertainment for making this night possible. I'm definitely looking forward to attending Reggae Music Fest 2005 and so should you! u By Sheldon Riley aka 2wist

JAPAN?S T

HOTTEST

“I WANT TO BE ‘THE’ ICON OF THE REGGAE MUSIC IN JAPAN” by Althea Wilson

his young and talened reggae artist is one to be reckoned with. She is very smart and very focused on her singing career. Rika have a very positive energy I had the opportunity to meet with this young lady backstage at Amazura where she was very kind enough to give RED INK Magazine an interview. RED INK: At what age did you start performing ? RIKA: I started playing the piano when I was six years old. At the same time, I learned how to sing from my teacher. RED INK: Who inspired you to become a singer? RIKA: In the early 90's, one of my friends gave me an album. It was Luciano's album [Back to Africa]. I was surprised how beautiful his songs were. After I listened to his album several times, I decided to become a singer. My favorite song in the album is [I Believe in Music]. RED INK: What were some of your vocal trainings? RIKA: Everyday, I went to the river and sing some songs. I like feeling natural vibes that human has forgot to feel. When I have the time, I go to the park, the sea, and the lake to sing. This practice really gives me the vibe. I also enjoy writing good lyrics after I finishing these practices. To improve my skills, I sing my song while I am playing the piano. And I also put small chop stick into my mouth and bite it with the deepest teeth. While I'm biting the chop stick, I try to sing. It helps me to get the loudest voice that I can make. RED INK: How often do you perform on stage? RIKA: When I was in Japan, I performed once a month in Tokyo. But, since I came to New York City for my recording of my first album, I really don't perform on the stage so often. But, I'm scheduled to perform in Miami in April. RED INK: Tell us some of your techniques. RIKA: I can bring my voice to the highest mega hertz that people normally think it is a sound of air, or even radio wave. The voice is like people can feel, but can't hear. I also use patoa (*Jamaican Language)

RED INK: Any special artist you would like to record/perform with? RIKA: Yes of course, I would like to records with Luciano, Capleton, Red Fox, Frankie Paul, Morgan Heritage and more! I love all reggae artists. RED INK: Being a very young female reggae artist from Japan, please provide us with some pros and cons in this industry that you have encountered. RIKA: Good thing in Reggae music industry is that no

one has ever discriminated against me just because I'm Japanese. Everybody loves each other and respect what he or she does. People in the industry are very kind and are like my family. Wherever I go, I feel that people welcomes me. I truly feel that people who love reggae music are very kind people. I'm proud to be a part of the reggae scene. RED INK: What can we expect from you in the future? RIKA: For people who are not Japanese and know about reggae music in Japan, they will talk about Rika Kaho very soon. That means I want to be ‘the’ Icon of the reggae music in Japan. I am introducing the real reggae music from Jamaica to Japan and around the world. I am currently in the studio doing some recordings, do look out for my album in the near future. Message from Rika: "Wana seh give thanks and praise to de almighty Jah. Cause yu done know seh him mek me stay inna de reggae music industry and allow me to be on this magazine. Respect all de Shatta dem de and de sweet sister dem who always support reggae music. THE LATEST CRAZE ... PLAYING CHESS! GIVAN VERTICAL CHESS

by Adrian Wilson

t's very seldom in life that one can turn his/her hobby or favorite past-time and MIKE GIVAN make it into a unique and lucrative business. Mike Givan started playing chess at a very young age of 7. His love and admiration for the game coupled with his skills in carpentry and a degree in architecture were all the right ingredients for Mike Givan's brilliant version of the old masterful chess game. RED INK was very honored and pleased to have a few Q & A with the master builder himself‌ RED INK: Where did you grow up? MIKE: I grew up in Hollis Queens, NY RED INK: What inspired you to design such a unique version of the chess game? MIKE: My father taught me how to play chess, but my grandfather was my inspiration him being a carpenter. RED INK: What college did you attend and what was your major? MIKE: I attended Hampton University and got a degree in Architecture. RED INK: How long does it take to finish one vertical chess? MIKE: It takes me a month to build a set. I only use exotic woods from around the world (Africa & the Caribbean). I use woods like Ebony, snakewood and zebrawood etc. RED INK: Please provide us with some pros and cons in this new and exciting venture. MIKE: the pros are that there is very little competition. I also have total freedom in creativity. The cons are when I'm trying to convince people that the vertical board is the same as the regular chess board.

I

18

RED INK: What can we expect from you in the future? MIKE: I'm currently working on a deal with Arnold Schwarzenegger. I also would like to get my game in the movies. RED INK: Anything else you would like to tell us? MIKE: The exotic woods used for the boards leaves very little room for error. My first board took me two months to create. There is no waiting list and I do self promotions and I like finding out who has a love for the game. There is a board displayed at the 40/40 Club in NYC. RED INK predicts that in the near future every major actor, sports figure, and artists who can play the game will be requesting Mike Givans Vertical Chess. All the best to you Mike and congratulations on a well done venture. Log on to www.givan.com

Ask Dr. G ? LADIES: GET THE FACTS

I

am called upon daily to discuss the various birth control methods with my patients of all ages from teenage years to menopause. Unfortunately all too often it is too late to achieve the effect of preventing pregnancy, because of many erroneous assumptions. First of all, both the rhythm and withdrawal methods fail far too often, especially in those who have claimed to use either or both method for a long time without a problem - until of course now when they are coming to me pregnant. There are large failure rates even when these are done properly, but often the failures are due to poor knowledge of the techniques or lazy practices: if using the rhythm method one needs to know exactly when she ovulates and avoid intercourse that day, and from 4 days before until 3 days after - that is the safest way. But one must realize that a woman needs to have very regular menstrual and ovulation pattern and know her body very well, to observe potential changes that may affect her cycle - including pretty much any stress, physical or psychological (e.g. illnesses, exams, relationship problems - to name a few). Sperm can live 3 days and the ovum pretty much has had it if unfertilized by 24 hours, but to increase on avoiding pregnancy use the extra day on each side, as I have suggested above. Mixing withdrawal (“pulling out”) with the rhythm method will increase the chance of success, but semen sneaks a peak into the outside world when an erection exists. Waiting for full ejaculation to believe that no exposure to sperm has occurred could be a big mistake when the plan is to avoid pregnancy.

Gary Greenstein, M.D., F.A.C.O.G. Obstetrician / Gynecologist to his new office specializing in complete women’s medical services.

20

Condoms - the dreaded word for most of my patients, young and old, married and not, are not only very effective against pregnancy (especially if used properly and combined with other methods - generally the two discussed above, and/or spermicide products) but also invaluable in the fight against the spread of nearly every STD (sexually transmitted disease - a topic planned for a future article). They may not prevent every infection every time, but for example, used properly with all sexual encounters, condoms would probably eliminate HIV spread. And as an aside, no matter how cute, handsome, and cleanly shaven he may be, believe me, “he” is a potential harbinger of sexual disease spread, and may neither know nor intend to tell you ladies this prior to the kiss and whatever else the evening would have in store. So prevent the STD and pregnancy all-in-one by “wrapping up” - you will not be complaining to me nearly as much at your next Gyn visit that I can assure you. There is so much more to cover on this subject. Maybe next time. But be aware of something that I am sorry more people do not realize - the term Emergency Contraception (EC). Most women can safely benefit from a quick fix, short term (12 hour apart) dosing of pills that will prevent implantation in a majority of women who had some reason why sperm may have reached an egg (from the broken condom to the “oops we forgot to use something”). Whatever the excuse, get a call into your gynecologist as soon as you can - even on the weekend, and you may still save on the unwanted pregnancy. But that is not an excuse for poor prevention or something to be used lightly or often - but the option is a good one and does exist.

So, as they said on every Hill Street Blues episode, “let’s be careful out there”. (Am I giving away my age?) u PART II next issue By Dr. Gary Greenstein M.D.

H

er bal supplements are a type of dietary supplement that contain herbs, either singly or in mixtures. An herb (also called a botanical) is a plant or plant part used for its scent, flavor, and/or therapeutic properties. Many herbs have a long history of use and of claimed health benefits. However, some herbs have caused health problems for users. This fact sheet contains points you should consider for your safety if you use, or are thinking about using, herbs for health purposes. About Dietary Supplements Dietary supplements were defined in a law passed by Congress in 1994. A dietary supplement must meet all of the following conditions: "It is a product (other than tobacco) intended to supplement the diet, which contains one or more of the following: vitamins; minerals; herbs or other botanicals; amino acids; or any combination of the above ingredients. "It is intended to be taken in tablet, capsule, powder, softgel, gelcap or liquid form. "It is not represented for use as a conventional food or as a sole item of a meal or the diet. "It is labeled as being a dietary supplement. It's important to know that just because an herbal supplement is labeled "natural" does not mean it is safe or without any harmful effects. For example, the herbs kava and comfrey have been linked to serious liver damage. Herbal supplements can act in the same way as drugs. Therefore, they can cause medical problems if not used correctly or if taken in large amounts. In some cases, people have experienced negative effects even though they followed the instructions on a supplement label. Women who are pregnant or nursing should be especially cautious about using herbal supplements, since these products can act like drugs. This caution also applies to treating children with herbal supplements. It is important to consult your health care provider before using an herbal supplement, especially if you are taking any medications (whether prescription or

Contd........Maxi Priest 2: By harm it you mean? MP: Well you know a lot of things like with all this gay thing. 2: Would the lack of humility play a part in it? MP: I think that that's a harsh word, but with this gay thing, you have to look at peoples freedom of speech beliefs and basically what people want to do with their own lives. At the end of the day, God say let's not judge, he will be the one to judge. You know, leave all judgment up to God. You do what ever you want to bring it to me and I feel uncomfortable I'll let you know. After that, you go your way and I'll go mine. No need to do anything other than that. 2: alright now, let's go back. How old were you when you first started performing, and what inspired you? MP: I've always sang you know what I mean. I come from a vary large family, nine brothers and sisters, and they always me put on some form of pedestal to do some form of entertainment, laughing, joking, just having a beautiful time. From I've known myself I've always been singing. My mother was a missionary at a Pentecostal church we sung at church. Church one time was in the basement of our house. We have a very large congregation now. 2: What sort of impact did that have on your life? MP: Tremendous impact, tremendous impact! You know; integrity, principles, understanding and balance. The key to life, one of the hardest things to gain is balance. Throughout anything that you do, the guidelines of coming up in a Pentecostal church were solid. And I think a lot of those things need to be instilled in today's society now more than ever, because we're lacking those things. 2:I understand exactly where our coming from as well as you're going with that. MP: You know I'm a diplomat though, I ain't trying to tread on anybody toes things I like things I don't like, but there is a main road that shows you this right and this wrong there is a guideline there is a bible there is a word of God that gives you some boundaries you know. This is wrong kid this right. But, you know, you feel, I'm doing the thing you feel I'm doing the wrong thing. And that's when you have to talk to yourself and talk to God. I'm happy with what I'm doing and I', not quite sure what it feels like to be wrong you know what I'm saying? 2: No doubt MP: Give and take, you know? There are so many things in life you will come across stumbling blocks, obstacles that you will definitely come across with that guideline that basic understanding of the bible you can find your way. Do I sound like I know what I'm talking about? Hope you understand what I'm saying. 2: Trust me, even with the Anointed One singing 'Give Me Strength O Jah " in the back round, I hear and understand everything you're saying bro. But is there anything else at this time that you feel needs to be said right now? Not so much as the behavior but what direction should we be looking in? MP: I'm saying, just check ourselves, all of us, just check ourselves, take your time sit in a room by yourself in the darkness and just chill. Ask yourself "am I right, am I wrong, am I sure? Just ask, ask God. 2: How often do you check yourself? 22

MP: As often as I am here today talking to you. I have some serious guidelines, my mother was a missionary, can you imagine that? In my household my mom would preach twenty-four-seven, whatever part of the bible was quoted out of her mouth "Psalms this and that! Ah so it say and so it say and Ray ray ray" you know, and you grow up with those kinda things, and those things make you check yourself. 2: So checking yourself became second nature? MP: Absolutely you know, and I know when I've done things wrong most definitely you know what I'm saying, and I either pray for forgiveness or try to correct it. Cause I ain't perfect nobody's perfect. That's why we need to check ourselves, because we are all partly responsible for where it's going and how it's about to go down. 2: That's peace, for real. So what's next for Maxi Priest? MP: I'm in the middle of trying to finish an album. I'm looking to putting it out in the first quarter of next year. I took a break for a while, after being with Virgin records for sixteen or seventeen years and um the constant going, going, going; you know I was ill earlier this year. 2: What happened? MP: I had a little heart attack, kinda give me a wake up call, you know just kinda like took a break for a minute and get back to some everyday living-come off of this pedestal that I'm on for a minute. Because it's not me you know, it's people put you on a pedestal. And I've been on for many years. I'm not against it. Is that your phone or my phone? Oh it's yours.ha,ha, busy huh? Anyway I give thanks for it because I know I'm blessed I know I'm blessed There's not to many people that can do, or should I say are doing what it is that they love to do and that in itself makes me know that I'm blessed. I've traveled the world; there are very few places that I haven't seen. That in itself shows me that I've been blessed. I've traveled to these places, and the reception that I've gotten has been very good. The hospitality of the people of these places has been fantastic I just kinda took a chill pill for a little bit. Virgin who I departed from after so many years called me back and I signed another deal with them. We've been working on this album now a year. That's where I'm at really. 2: Has there ever come a time when you were ready to just say forget about it? Or that's it I'm done, this is too hectic? MP: Yeah of course there was many of times cause people make you and people break you and there are times when you feel like you want to escape. 2: What would you be doing had you not started singing? MP: I would be on a building site probably my own building site we do run a construction company in England. I buy, rent, convert and sell houses that's my second love. All of us my brothers and sisters are in some sort of building and real estate and we've all been blessed. 2: Well I'm glad that chill pill wasn't so big that you couldn't swallow it. It's been a pleasure to disturb your meal and I hope to hear from you again soon. MP: Thank you because without you there's no me, Nuff respect. u by Sheldon Riley aka 2wist

Contd........Lit’L TIC RED INK: I really salute you on your style of Rap that contains no profanity. How did you come to that decision about your music style and how have your fans responded to that decision? TIC: Well, one night my oldest brother Thomas was playing one of my songs and it had the "F" word in the chorus and my mother heard it, and said "I know that's not my daughter"! I've always respected my mother's opinion and took advantage of her sound advises to choose better words than curse words. My fans are of all ages and they respect the fact I'm not cursing or using profanity. Some don't know it until I tell them. RED INK: The night we first met you after the seminar, you and your dancer's were about to go and enjoy the city shopping right? Was that your first experience in "The Big Apple"? TIC: Yes, my dancers and I had never been to N.Y.C before. It was amazing, all of the bright lights. It was like a huge Broadway show in self. I had a blast. RED INK: You have a very impressive list of performances in Acting, Dancing, and as a Recording Artist, which is LIT'L TIC first? And why? TIC: I am "Lit'l Tic" the Artist, because I think I represent the average female in a different light and rapping is the best way I can display it. I'm able to show who I am through dancing & acting. RED INK: Who were some of your influence's in your life that led you to be one of the most diverse young and upcoming artist in the industry? TIC: "Twista", people often compare and call me a female

Contd....Tayna Stephens 2: Tanya that performance was nothing short of spectacular. Did you enjoy the vibe of the people here today? TS: Of course I enjoy the vibe, and the reception weh me get from my brothers and sisters was amazing. It's not my fist time in New York, but the greeting weh me get says a lot. 2: What makes you come across the way that you do? TS: Personal experiences I sing about life, my life in general. 2: So, you were really stuck with a dude who didn't want to pull his weight? TS: Things like that happen in life. That's why I try to make my sisters them aware 2: Do you consider yourself a role model? TS: In a way yes, because if the things weh me go through and come away from can help somebody get by I did my job. 2: I got to ask you this. What was it that made you write down the beginnings of yet another hit song on an airplane barf bag? TS: I didn't have anything else to write on. That was just something I wanted to get off my chest. Did you like it? 2: What? I like everything you bring to the table! Gangsta Blues is what I wake up to. What's your favorite song off your new cd Gangsta Blues? TS: I don't really have a favorite cut because it's all me. 2: What was it like working with guys like Spragga Benz 24

"Twista". I also admire Lauryn Hill for her diversity and style. Her music guides me to another side of myself. I can't forget about Mr. Stevie Wonder. My parents listened to him all time, but it wasn't until I met him, Mr. Wonder showed me the beauty of music without the ability to see. Thanks Stevie‌ RED INK: How did you get started as a Choreographer? TIC: When I moved from Chicago to Indiana, there were no dance groups (like in Chicago), So I created Mega-Fye-House which grew to 30 members. It combined some of their professional training with my street choreography and invented a new style of dance. RED INK: What current projects are you working on? TIC: A production deal with producers in L.A. linked with Dr. Dre.. and G-Unit , and a duet with Henry Love in Chicago. RED INK: What other projects can we look forward in the future from LIT'L TIC? TIC: My Album "SHECAGO". Giving a woman's point of view growing up in the mist of the Windy City. RED INK: Finally, Lit'L Tic is there anything special that you want the readers to know about you? TIC: My Message is different from any other Rappers. It's a lot of females who can relate to what I'm saying. I'm not trying to sell sex or claiming I'm the baddest "B". I'm just "TIC". I represent Empowerment, and "It's my time". That's what "Tic" means. Be sure to catch this Exploding Star on her rise to Stardom. Soon the name LIT"L TIC will be whispered in every ear. u and Wyclef Jean? TS: Work, them man like work and me love work so it was a wonderful work related experience. 2: Is there anybody out there that you would like to work with after this last album? TS: Well, I'm in the studio everyday working on something new, there are a few people out there I wouldn't mind doing something with but I gotta concentrate on Tanya right now.. How can you label your self as a performer if you can't perform by yourself? 2: Why are you so different? What sets Tanya Stephens apart from the rest? TS: I don't like to sing mushy, hopeful stuff, that's not real to me.I go straight for the reality of interpersonal relationships because I'm fascinated by people's behavior.I don't judge, I explore and look at things from different angles. I hate being categorized as a female because my job has nothing to do with gender. Don't say I'm one of the best female lyricists in Jamaica; you're not really complementing me at all. There are so few females and even less who actually write their own stuff. Somebody got to keep it real, no 16.99 for an album that only have one good track on it. Well I'm gonna keep it real and let you know that " Gangsta Blues " is in stores now and if you don't go out and pick it up, you're cheatin' yourself and not treatin' yourself girls, it's a must have trust me Uncle 2wist out! u By Sheldon Riley aka 2wist

The studies found that sleep-deprived volunteers had higher levels of the appetite-stimulating hormone and lower levels of the hormone that gives you the feeling of satiety. “We strongly recommend that any weight-reduction program include getting enough sleep as one of their tips,” said University of Chicago sleep specialist Dr. Esra Tasali, co-author of one of the new studies. The results of the study, conducted by Stanford University and University of Wisconsin researchers, were similar regardless of participants’ gender, eating and exercise habits or body mass index. Researchers determined the optimal amount of sleep for weight control to be 7.7 hours. But, if cutting back on sleep gives people more time to overeat, sleeping for too long leaves them less time for exercising. According to the U. of C. researchers, during the past 50 years, the amount of time Americans sleep each night has decreased by one to two hours. “During the same time period, the incidence of obesity has nearly doubled,” researchers wrote. “Additional studies should examine the possible role of chronic sleep curtailment as a previously unrecognized risk factor for obesity.” “We strongly recommend that any weight-reduction program include getting enough sleep as one of their tips,” said University of Chicago sleep specialist Dr. Esra Tasali, co-author of one of the new studies. First Ever, Semi-Permanent

Ta t t o o

-Technology Presented at HBA World Congress; New Power Paper PowerTattoo Enabled By Breakthrough Micro-electronic Patch Technology In a presentation at Health & Beauty America's (HBA) Advanced Technical Conference on High Performance Ingredients held today in New York City, Aaron Fink, M.D., Ph.D., of Power Paper Ltd., a leading, global provider of thin and flexible micro-power patch technology, presented the latest study results for the development of an innovative micro-powered patch technique for semi-permanent tattooing. This new method eliminates the risks of permanent body art, but lasts longer than a traditional "temporary tattoo." The technology utilizes the process of iontophoresis, whereby ionized pigments are delivered into the epidermal layer of the skin. Laboratory and initial human tests have shown the patches to be safe, gentle and hypoallergenic. Following a 20-minute application process, the tattoo appears on the skin. The fully disposable, environmentally-friendly patch can be discarded after use along with household waste. "PowerTattoo(TM) is a breakthrough product that puts an end to the risks and disadvantages surrounding permanent body art," says Dr. Fink, who is Business Line Director of Power Paper's PowerCosmetics(TM) division. "Self-applied by a thin and flexible, non-toxic, microelectronically-enabled patch, the technique uses FDA acceptable dyes to provide consumers with customized tattoos." Unlike the traditional tattooing process, the PowerTattoo offers instant and painless results with no risk of allergic reactions or spread of disease. "PowerTattoo is just one of many applications made possible by Power Paper's revolutionary micro-electronic patch technology," said Shalom Daskal, CEO of Power Paper. "Our PowerCosmetics patches have demonstrated outstanding results for wrinkle reduc-

tion, skin whitening, and treatment of facial redness, among others." Founded in 1997, Power Paper Ltd. of Tel Aviv, Israel, partners with cosmetics and pharmaceutical manufacturers to develop and market its patches worldwide. Power Paper's patented, thin and flexible energy cells (batteries) are integrated within the patch. These environmentally-friendly, safe batteries require no metal casing, and can be printed cost-effectively directly onto paper, plastics or other surfaces by standard printing equipment. Licensing and know-how agreements allow Power Paper's partners and customers in the United States, Europe and Asia to utilize the company's award-winning technology to produce hundreds of millions of environmentally-friendly cells annually. Based on this technology, the company has developed a number of innovative applications for its PowerCosmetics™ , PowerNovelties™ and PowerID™ product lines, as well as a line of PowerInks™ for authorized manufacturers.u 29
