PUBLISHER’S NOTE

Everything, including the monsoon, seems to be moving at a snail’s pace. Some confusion and much chaos prevail, with many issues left in limbo - whether it is the decision on capital or Hyderabad Metro project or Special Railway zone for Vizag or the much-promised loan waiver for farmers or improving the power situation. The newly-elected leaders are trying hard to find reasons for the tardy progress in both the states and basically blame it on the unplanned division of the state. It is all buzz and no biz at both the Secretariats as the basic infrastructure is missing. Most of the ministers and their supporting staff are the first-timers and yet to find their feet in their new posts. Anyway we keep our fingers crossed and hope that some method will be evolved to sort out these issues and the governments in both the states will kickstart their much-promised developmental programmes. Untouched by the surrounding confusion, red has its priorities right. We splash the beauty and elegance of Sonal Chauhan, the most happening actor, on our cover and speak of her journey to provide a happy relief to the serious milieu. While Dr.Krishna Priya, the reputed cosmetologist, sets right Nature’s flaws and enhances people’s looks, Asmita Marwa, the ace designer, dresses the already good-looking celebrities. They embellish Eve segment We have two highly inspirational Life stories that are sure to catch the attention of our readers. The father-son duo, former MP, Mr. G.V.Harsha Kumar and Mr. G.V.Sri Raj, with a very exciting past, are looking forward to an action-filled future. The made-foreach other couple- Mr.Srikanth Jasti, CMD and his wife Asha Madhuri, Director of Sun Institute of Technology and Management give a vivid account of their well-laboured rise in the world of education. On one side of the spectrum is the most happening businessmen, Shailesh Kumar, who was born with entrepreneurial spoon in his mouth and runs the well-known Sati Kreations and on the other side are the brand new entries (pun unintended) to the world of trade- Sunil and Vinay who launched the much-talked of hotspot Hazzle, the ice cream and dessert lounge. Our GenX deals with them. We are completing three years in the print media and will be out with our third anniversary issue. Leaving much to your imagination, I only state that it is going to be a unique and exclusive collector’s special. So, my dear readers, hold your breath and wait.

SANTHI ENCORE! By Avinash Chandra Gembali

S

iddharthsai Events and Management Services Pvt Ltd is an event management company with a rich experience of over 40 successful lifestyle exhibitions in the last few years. Its mission is to secure sizable mind-share and claim the Numero Uno slot in Tier II and Tier III cities, organizing lifestyle exhibition-cumsales in the name of Trendz Expo. Her event is coming up at Taj Vivanta, Bangalore on August 1&2, 2014. The company endeavours to provide equal opportunity to all its participants, the exhibitors. “Till date we have been successful, thanks to our participants who have extended their unflinching support time and again, says Santhi Kathiravan, the brain behind the Siddharthsai Events. Santhi is a civil engineer by qualification and a business woman/entrepreneur by passion. She throws light on various aspects of her business.

JOURNEY TILL NOW “Right now we zero in on only lifestyle exhibitions in cities across South India but have ambitious plans of exploring other business options in the near future,” she says, adding, “We have conducted lifestyle exhibitions in Hyderabad (base location), Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada, Nellore, Warangal, Ongole, Nizamabad, Coimbatore and Cochin.” Santhi hails from Nellore and lives in Hyderabad. She is married to Kathiravan Loganathan. Till now she organized 44 events. Before launching Encore Events, she worked for ICICI Bank and later for an insurance company. She has been organizing the events throughout South India. However, that is not where Santhi is going to stop. Seeking greener pastures, the company has plans to expand its horizons and is planning to hold an exhibition in Raipur, Chattisgarh. USP “I always depend on the kind of sale I give to my exhibitors. My USP is reasonable tariff I charge for the stalls without burdening the merchants,” she says. Santhi knows the pulse of the people and espouses thorough knowledge of the ongoing trends. She can decidedly tell which market and dates are suitable to organize an event. “I always like to hold events in July and September as people come in big numbers during these months. This, naturally fetches us good profits,” Santhi says. Stating season is the main criteria for her to set up a sale, Santhi says, “That is what I check for whenever or wherever I come up with an event. I also have to have a good reason for doing an event.” It is little wonder she is successful and made it big in the field. “When I started my business the turnover was Rs.4 lakh per annum and it has gone up to Rs.40 lakh p.a.,” she says with justified pride. USHERING IN THE NEW With her organizing skills and business acumen, Santhi is able to rope in international/national exhibitors for her expos. Her expertise in classical dance added aesthetic dimension to her selections. Describing her modus operandi, she says that she doesn’t rope in branded companies and cites a valid reason for it. “If I encourage and coordinate with big brands in our stalls, they take the lion’s share of our profits,” she says. Instead she is all for encouraging deserving new and budding entrepreneurs. As of now she has introduced many exhibitors and they are doing very well, with their business growing in leaps and bounds. However, she insists that she feels really happy and proud whenever a housewife approaches her and participates in her exhibition. MOTTO Stressing that customers’ satisfaction is her motto, she says, “Though I feel happy my events serve as a platform for many an entrepreneur to prosper, ultimately it is the customer’s satisfaction that really counts. I always pray to God that whoever comes to our expo should leave the venue sporting a smile on his /her face.” She says, “My husband is a devotee of Sai Baba. That explains suffix Sai in the company’s name.” She attributes the credit of her success to her husband and describes him as her backbone, pillar of support and driving force. “Basically, I am a short tempered person. My husband who is calm and stoic, advises me to keep my cool. In fact he is the one who taught me how to talk to people and convince the customers,” she says. LOVE FOR VIZAG An out and out fan of Vizag, Santhi says, “I feel at home in Vizag. She likes South Indian food. “I rustle up different varieties of food whenever we have a guest at home.” FUTURE PLANS In the next five years, she wants her company to be a big brand in the entire area of Chirala segment and she already started working towards that goal. She has plans to start a school in 2015 academic year. “Soon I am going to be an educationist,” Santhi says, exuding enthusiasm. It is after all not in vain that people say, “Success succeeds success.”

f you are delving on authentic aromas of Indian cuisine, the mention of Zaffran is a must. Aficionados, here we have its revamped version Varun Novotel Hotel, Visakhapatnam. Its cuisine transcended the boundaries of North India and included all the Indian regions, along with portions of royal delicacies. The 68-cover (including two Private Dining Room-PDR) restaurant has undergone a makeover, drawing inspiration from its name which means Saffron. Naturally it displays dominance of orange, gold and sand colours. The metal jaaliwork-wall panels remind one of regal palaces. Even it has pure desi dose of entertainment with live Mrudangam, Violin, Ghazal recitals in the evenings. The menu has over 120 dishes which is a result of meticulous research by Executive Sous Chef, Nareshkumar. D and his team. Some of them are pure innovations, a few are fusion and the rest are regional specialties. Begin with Khaasta Rumali- a complementary starter resembling Masala Papad but a successful experimentation of Zaffran. Vegetarians must try, Kallan Fry- mushroom stuffed with a cheese filling, Alu Mutur ki Topi- potato coated with green peas mash and deep fried, Curry Patta Paneer, Mokkajana Ulli Vepudu (crispy American corn Andhra style), similarly non-vegetarians can order Patraani Machhi, Bongu Kodi (Araku Valley specialty), Konkani Lobster- whole lobster prepared with roughly hand pounded spices, Karivepaku Royyala Vepudu as starters. Soup lovers can try Tomato Shorba and non-vegetarians must have Kodi Chaaru – prepared with coconut milk and chicken paste and lot of chilies. t may sound incredible but with nearly 3000+ restaurants, Hyderabad is still considered the best place to start a restaurant. So, all the foodies out there, you have yet another addition to your dining options. Her passion for hotel industry and her parents’ support made Sravani start Hyderabad Blues. Located opposite Sakshi office, Banjara Hills, the place is a perfect for family dining and kitty parties. Done in white and blue, the interiors are elegant with a neatly spaced out seating arrangement. It has private dining rooms and a banquet hall that caters to big groups and small get togethers like kitty and birthday parties and corporate lunches etc. It takes pride in serving healthy and hygienic food. The restaurant has a lavish buffet with nearly 42 items that include 9 starters and 10 desserts. The best chefs offer different cuisines. The kitchen uses only mineral water for cooking and oil is not recycled and kitchen hygiene is maintained on priority basis. The leftover food is sent to orphanages and to the poor. From providing indoor games like tambola for kitty parties or projector facility for corporate functions, the restaurant ensures complete support to all events. However, keeping pace with the changing trends, the restaurant is all set to surprise Hyderabadis with its revamped look, menu and prices. With five genres of cuisines: Indian, Continental, Chinese, Mexican and Italian under one roof, this restaurant promises to cater to a wide range of food lovers. Like its name, the restaurant is intelligently divided into levels that ensure comfort dining. The cane seating arrangement gives it a very casual and friendly atmosphere. There is an open air section which is good for kitty parties and college student gatherings. The bistro also has a rooftop facility and offers attractive group and corporate discounts. With customer service as the motto, the Bistro has introduced “Loyalty Card.” Those customers who come often can avail a discount on this facility. All you need to pay is Rs.99. The loyalty card subscription money goes to an NGO. The restaurant also introduced home and corporate delivery and take away facilities. It is hard to choose what to eat at Levels as all the dishes are delicious. However, their Mexican menu and mocktails are worth mention. So, if you have a taste bud and love exploring different cuisines, Levels Bistro is the perfect place. Best among the available are Nachos supreme, Mexican Pizza, Tacos, and Veg ’n Non veg Enchiladas.

NURSING A SONNY DREAM TDP loyalist Ayyanna Patrudu made it at last, weathering many a storm and stiff resistance from some formidable rivals and finally he was very aptly rewarded with Panchayati Raj and Rural Water Supply portfolio. Hailing from a rural background, Patrudu is sure to handle the job perfectly. It may be remembered that the veteran had sought the seat for his son during the recent elections. TDP supremo Chandrababu Naidu could convince Patrudu himself to contest, but obviously could not douse the aspiration of a father. Patrudu is now sending feelers to field his son in the upcoming corporation polls. Or the next best he would settle for is to have a man of his choice. With many TDP leaders eyeing the Mayoral seat for their own cronies, the post has become a bone of contention.

CHIP OFF OLD BLOCK Like father like son is the maxim that sits pretty on D.V.S.S.Somayajulu, the reputed lawyer and the son of former Mayor Mr.D.V.Subba Rao. He needs no special introduction as he is already known for his multifarious activities. Vice-President of both Andhra Pradesh Cricket Association and Visakha District Cricket Association, Somayajulu served as the president of Bar Association and is also the former Chairman of Waltair Round Table 92 and at present he is the Chairman of 41ers Round Table 86. He is the only advocate who attended arbitrations outside India in countries like the US and Hong Kong. The new feather in his cap is the Presidentship of the prestigious Waltair Club. He created a record of sorts winning it with a thumping majority. It is the first time ever a president bagged such an impressive majority. The club members, who repose trust in his dynamic leadership, expect the Club to reach new milestones.

CART OF UNLIMITED FUN The fun of zipping through the zigzag circuit enjoying the sea breeze can’t be replaced with anything for all those junkies who are always on the lookout for new adventures. Now Vizagites are also smitten by this fever. Thanks to Go-karting which has hiked the city’s entertainment quotient. It has lived up to its pre-launch hype. The Go-karting fans are going gaga over the facility, which claims to have the 800-metre circuit, the longest in the country. With almost 30 karts with 200cc engines which can go up to 80 kmph and of different sizes catering to varied age groups between 3 and 70 years, it has become the ultimate spot for some swift moves. The recently held competition gave a fascinating picture of the craze it has among its aficionados. Pramod Kumar and Krishna Gorrepatti, the brains behind this Mangamaripeta project have not stopped here as it flaunts a nine-pin miniature golf, human sling shot, rain dance zone, a 1,500 capacity open banquet, a multi-cuisine restaurant, kid’s zone, snooker table and a bowling alley.

RAJU THE NEW HOPE FOR IT HUB BJP MLA P Vishnu Kumar Raju’s election as the party's floor leader in the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly is certainly a ray of hope for the much neglected Visakhapatnam. With him at the helm of the affairs, the City hopes to get its voice heard in the Assembly. The beleaguered local IT sector is thrilled as it has a man, one among them, is on the spot. Though touted as the IT hub, Vizag has made little progress in the field with a number of glitches. As a BJP man, Raju is bound to have a say in the state as well as at the Centre. Moreover, as an aggrieved IT giant, he is aware of the ground realities and can present them to the governments in real earnestness.

NAG IN A SPOT Nagarjuna or rather his N- Convention Centre has been in the news for wrong reasons, with GHMC dubbing it as an ‘illegal’ structure. Nag apparently failed to convince Telangana Chief Minister K.Chandrasekhar Rao, who is keen on reclaiming the ‘encroached’ government land. Nag was left with no option but to move the court. KCR is said to have been nettled by Nag’s toeing the BJP line in the recent elections and is targeting the actor who acquired the property during the YSR regime. Meanwhile, the authorities concerned claim that the government is firm on demolishing all “illegal” constructions and Nag’s case is no exception. The controversy may tarnish Nag’s reputation, which is touching a new high following the thumping success of Manam and the TV show Meelo Evaru Koteeswarudu. Leaving no stone unturned to wriggle out of the row he is said to have approached even Modi and Chandrababu Naidu. NEWSMAKER MANISHA She has already proven her creative talent by founding PINK Club. Is that all? Can’t be so! She has also been the centre of attraction with her serene beauty wherever she goes. Be it a P3 or any other high profile party, her name tops the guests’ list. She is the ravishing diva Manisha Kapoor. Recently she has created a buzz around the town, but this time it is neither for her stunning appearance nor for her club. . Looks like she has drawn inspiration from the award bestowed on her by Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu. It is a post which she shared on her FB wall. “Entering politics, supporting the right party…offered @the topmost woman’s post, wanting to get a change in the social scenario. Formal announcement soon,” read her FB share. Undoubtedly it got hundreds of likes and comments too. But at the same time, the perfect example of beauty with brain, Manisha has certainly raised the curiosity of many who are wondering if she is hinting a political debut. CLICKING SUCCESS CLEO’S WAY Passion-driven-actions can yield remarkable records – this is what he has established effortlessly. He has changed the face of photography which in recent times has somehow lost its real artistic value with any person with a high-end camera posing as an ace photographer. He is Cleo Fernandes. Be it any fashion show, launch party or even any gala wedding, this man is spotted there with his shutterbug absolutely engrossed clicking his masterpieces. An entrepreneur who runs a stationery store off-passion, he is self-taught photographer and has been clicking for many years. His popularity stands a testimony to his prowess, as his FB page has almost 60,000 likes. What surprises others is the very fact that he doesn’t take a single penny for his photography. He loves photography and doesn’t indulge in it just for the heck of it. An act of honesty never fritters away. The real talent gets its due recognition no matter how stiff the competition is. By receiving the State Appreciation Award for Photography from Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu, Cleo has proved it again.

DIVINE ASPIRATION As Kanumuri Bapiraju’s stint as Chairman of Tirumala Tirupathi Devasthanam has come to an end, many a political bigwig, who have been denied post in the ministry, are in the race for the coveted post. If rumours are to be believed even corporate bodies too added to the list of aspirants and are vying for the plum position. Filling the post seems to have become a headache for Babu who is said to have promised the post to Chadalavada Krishnamurthi that too in black and white. The others who are in the race are former MLA Gali Muddukrishnama Naidu and Narsaraopet MP Rayapati Sambasiva Rao. Rayapati who was denied the posts earlier while he was with the Congress, is exerting pressure on Babu saying that that was his one and only ambition for life. In such a scenario the only option Babu left with is to nominate Rayapati for one term and Chadalavada for the next. Muddukrishnama may be nominated to Legislative Council.

THREADS OF TRUST By Ranita Ray ny traditional celebration to be preceded by a bit of shopping- it has to be at Sati Kreation, the ultimate destination in Vizag. This statement is not part of a promotion, but an indisputable fact. Well, when the owner of this mega showroom has a four-generation-long legacy in the textile industry behind him, people’s faith and loyalty become self explanatory. Yes, the owner belongs to the group which has the esteemed JK Silks in its business portfolio. Is that all? Certainly not! In Vizianagaram his group holds approximately 50-60% of the organized textile retail industry. Thus it is no bragging when Shailesh Kumar Jalan, proudly quotes, “Textile runs in our blood now. We have been the leaders right from the beginning till date.”

FLASHBACK The saga of their business dates back to 1922. “It was this year when my great grandfather, Mr. Madan Lalji Jalan migrated from Rajasthan to Vizianagaram and started a textile firm in the name of Vinayak Ramachandra & Company. This district was under the rule of Gajapathi dynasty and was also the third biggest textile market (in the united Andhra). Even today it is one of the largest wholesale markets in the state. No exaggeration, but right from that era we were the leaders in textile industry and dominated the market of the region,” he states with a justified pride. Then came his grandfather Mr.Hari Ramji Jalan to shoulder the responsibilities and during his period the business reached new heights. However, it was Shailesh’s father Mr.Devakinandan Jalan, who gave it an organized shape and initiated aggressive brand promotion campaigns. This led to creation of wider clientele base which transcends the district limit and now spreads from Tuni to Rayagada. In 1982 he launched Sunil Enterprises in Vizianagaram, which was purely his personal venture. The opening of JK Silks Pvt. Ltd (named after Mr. Jalan Kishan, elder brother of Devakinandan) in 1989, came as one of the major turning points. Till date JK Silks stands as a brand for trust, purity and quality. One after the other, the Jalan group kept on setting new milestones. FRESH FUSE After running the business for three generations, it was now time for infusing fresh zest and this is when Shailesh pitched in. A product of Jain College, Bangalore, from where he obtained a BBM degree, he took a conscious decision to keep the Jalan flag fluttering high in the textile industry. “Being the only son, my father had high expectations from me though he never imposed his wishes on me. I was passively involved in the business from 1999. My active involvement began when my father launched Sati Kreation in Vizianagaram and I was made the in-

charge of this mega showroom spread over 20,000 sft area,” articulates Shailesh. Highly religious, the Jalans chose the name of their family Goddess Shri Rani Sati for the store and strongly believe that it is with her blessings they march ahead. DIVERSION “My father has always been known as a great philanthropist. Following his footsteps I tried to fulfill my commitment towards society whenever I get an opportunity. Jai Sati Constructions was one such attempt.” Speaking more about the venture he shares that it is a real estate project which he has launched in 2008. He selected one of the best layouts in Vizianagaram and within 18 months built 98 apartments which he sold for mere Rs.5 lakh per unit. It became a dream come true for those who were in no position to own a house in such a prime location. Within two years the value of the property became double. “While the government speaks about affordable housing for people, we did it six years ago and it gave us the ultimate satisfaction.”

expansion was on his mind. “My father wasn’t convinced and he objected to my proposal of expansion beyond Vizianagaram.” The very fact that they could attract 30% of the clientele drawn from Visakhapatnam encouraged Shailesh to try his luck in the City of Destiny. Thus, in 2012 Jai Sati Creation was born. Further talking about zeroing in on MVP Colony, he says, “We were the first players to take the risk of setting a commercial venture of such a mega scale in a residential area two years ago. However, I sensed immense business opportunities this area had in store for the future. There was no parking issues, traffic jams or political hassles. Today’s scenario vindicates my decision in choosing the place.” The same year Srikakulam too saw the opening of Jai Sati Kreation. Despite his father’s unwillingness, he also introduced the readymade division. Today it answers for 40% of their turnover. GENERATION GAP Giving the entire credit to his father for his success, Shailesh describes him as his guru, guide and idol too. It is only with the thorough training he received at the hands of his father that he could achieve whatever he aspired for. They are never at loggerheads. Till date, all decisions are taken collectively. “He respects my technical education and I respect his vast experience. He is my best buddy too.”

CHANGES INITIATED Making it big in this field and reaching the highest pinnacles are his dreams. Ergo, he looked beyond their indigenous brands and ventured out of his comfort zone. In 2009, he took up the project of Arvind Store, the most prestigious projects of the Group. “The idea was to launch the esteemed Arvind Pvt. Ltd group’s first Exclusive Business Outlet at national level. Through this outlet the group entered the fabric and fashion retailing vertical,” he explains. He followed it up by launching six stores in a span of one year in Hyderabad, Kakinada, Vijayawada, Srikakulam, Vizianagaram and Rajahmundry, facilitating a cakewalk for Arvind Pvt. Ltd. A candid Shailesh doesn’t hesitate to give due credit to his brother-in-law Mr. Amrish Ganeriwal, who was partner in this venture. The duo’s hard work paid off and they were awarded as the Best Retailer in South for the year 2014 of Arvind Franchise. EXPANSION Ever since he entered the business,

PAPA KEHTE HAI… “Basically I am not a P3 guy. However it is at the behest of my father who says that times have changed, I should be in step with times, that I even changed my attitude. That era has gone when people used to manage the show staying behind the screen. Visibility is very vital for business today. He insists that I should be a people’s person. Perhaps that is one of the reasons why I am in this column,” he says, beaming. ENMESH Shailesh feels that the new trends have to be followed for the smooth running of the business even though his father has been running it successfully for many years. It is imperative to adopt the latest innovations and technology. He, however, faced the biggest challenge to bring the shift from the nontechnical driven business to a technical driven one as his employees were reluctant to accept and adopt the change. He trained them in every nitty-gritty right from how to use computers and software, to calculate stock turnover, to reduce dead stock through system-driven methods. USP Their unbeatable customer service and customer-friendlypricing are their USP. Textile runs in our blood. We have been the leaders right from the beginning

FUTURE PLAN Three years down the line, there will be five more of their stores in Vizag and beyond it. However, Hyderabad is not included in the proposed expansion. As an immediate extension he is bringing a men’s wear designer column in the store, where a dedicated in-house designer will design and customized western and ethnic wear. He is confident this will augment the profit by double. Starting an agro-based industry is listed in his next plans of action. “In five years the agro field will witness a major boom. We had already initiated the spadework for this project, but the disturbances due to the state division put a hold on it. We are waiting for declaration of some subsidies by the government. It will work as a green signal for our venture and the project will come into existence within next six months,” he adds. He has chosen Vizianagaram for this project. He wants to uplift the beleaguered farmers and give them the feeling that they hold equal ownership in this industry on the lines of the Amul in Gujarat. One may call it an agricultural cooperative society. Simultaneously, he is also reconsidering real estate projects. However, he laments the escalating land prices. He hopes to resume it once the political stability is restored in the state. QUOTE Believe in thyself; whatever be the hurdle, just walk over it. “I believe one should be happily dissatisfied,” quotes Sailesh. He further explains, “Be happy with your achievements, but be also dissatisfied that you could have done even better. This way you can keep scaling new heights of success. Being completely satisfied with your achievements restricts your growth.”

He had everything in place, showing that he has an eye for detail. He is a very emotional person, but never expresses his emotions to anyone. It is only his parents and I have seen that side of him. Hyderabad, known for its food lovers and many new and innovative eateries, saw a new destination in 2011. At that time the city did have many jaunts but there were no ice-cream cafes. Even if there were some, they didn’t have enough space for people to sit around and enjoy the icy treats along with hot food. Meeting this particular need, two lads Sunil and Vinay set up Hazzle, a dessert lounge that promised to serve amazing Italian food too. The duo ventured into the immensely dynamic and risky food industry with a pure passion and total confidence in the concept. That grew into five centres across the city. P. Swarnalata has a cool chat with the derring duo and records their adventure.

THE TEAM SPEAK The formation of team They both are school friends and Sunil was Vinay’s junior. Though they moved apart to pursue education, stayed in touch with each other and shared common interests and set out with a common goal. The teamwork behind Hazzle They both are different but share a common vision and are extremely passionate about it. They know their strengths and weaknesses. They have built this brand by exploiting their strengths and learning as they grew. Handling disagreement Disagreements are inevitable but the real merit lies in making a disagreement into a healthy brainstorming and arriving at a common decision without spoiling the relationship. They definitely had their share of disagreements. They also know the art of healthy discussion and never allowed their professional disagreements to affect their personal rapport. “Sometimes we sort it out, sometimes we politely fight but we always share our thoughts and come to a common consensus.” Thoughts about each other “Sunil is good with people and has a good sense of taste. He can give the best feedback about flavours,” says Vinay “Vinay has amazing attention to detail and he is very perfect and accurate with money matters,” says Sunil Handling competition Food industry has always been an industry filled with cutthroat competition. It is very difficult to enter this industry, build a brand and sustain it for a long term. It is a known fact that Hyderabad is flooded with various eateries that have come up with promises to give different cuisines with different themes and many of them have even settled in the business keeping the given promises. Hence, the Hazzle duo certainly had tough time handling competition. “Every industry has its share of competition and pressure. Hyderabad as a city replete with eating joints certainly offers a tough competition to new entrants. However, if a venture has a solid brand positioning backed by equally consistent quality and service standards, it can march ahead of any formidable competitor. We run Hazzle on these principles. Also, besides having complete confidence in our brand, we always strive

to improve and get better,” say the friends Which eatery do you consider a competition? “Once you are in business, competitors’ performance does matter. Moreover, by guaging your rivals’ success you can raise bar for yourself. The competitive spirit constantly pushes you to fare better. It is very important to know the strengths and weaknesses of your peers. We have a different approach towards competition and market trends. For us, it is not just one particular eatery brand that poses competition. We consider any brand that occupies the customer's mind as "ice creams & casual food dining" option as a threat. So ultimately it is not the brand but the customers’ opinion that counts.” Piece of advice to young aspiring entrepreneurs “Should be very passionate of what you are doing, be ready to take any setback and move forward. Follow this and you achieve success for sure. In addition, venture into entrepreneurship only if you are looking at it from a long term perspective.” Vinay (V) & Sunil (S) reveal more... Born to be an Entrepreneur V Born and brought up in Hyderabad, he obtained a bachelors degree in business administration in finance. He hails from a family in which no one chose to be an entrepreneur. However, he had different plans and preferred having his own way to taking up a job. “After completing my graduation, I was given to choose between getting a job and pursuing higher studies. I was not keen on either of the options. At the same time, I could not be sitting idle. I wanted to become an entrepreneur. I, joined by Sunil, started searching for possible business options and wanted to start a business in the food and beverage industry.” S He too was born and brought up in Hyderabad, but went to Chennai to pursue graduation. An Electronics and Communication engineer from the prestigious, Chennai College of Engineering, he wanted to start something of his own. Throughout his college days, he kept developing various business models and learning about what it needs to be an entrepreneur. “The thought of starting something of my

own began while I was in my second year Engineering. To be frank , it was rather boring to do a regular engineering course and I used to have so much time that I thought I should use it in a fruitful way. I joined the entrepreneurship cell in our college. In addition I also joined a dairy brand where I learnt a lot and realized that it was really very exciting to create a food or beverage brand. Thus, my interests grew deeper and I started writing business plans, interacting with various management schools and students. So, by the end of my fourth year I was clear that I should start something of my own and not go for higher studies.” Family pressure and reaction V It is a known fact that handling business involves a huge risk and is not easy. Moreover, he was venturing into the sector which was highly competitive. For him it was definitely a bold step which he took up with a great vision. “There was no resistance from my family. My parents always wanted me to do what I like and believe in. However, like any other parents, they cautioned me and my friend. They said we should venture into it only if we were looking at it as a longterm option. They are very happy the way the venture has grown. But once in a while they do feel we got into it too early. While people belonging to our age group enjoy life we don’t get much time for ourselves because for now it is just work.” S He was an undergrad and was the first from his family to have thought of becoming an entrepreneur. In addition, in a Telugu environment, foregoing an engineering degree and taking up entrepreneurship is truly like going against the current. Getting into entrepreneurship is always a risk, according to parents. “It was really a big issue in my case. Initially there was a lot of resistance. However, my parents have been kind enough to allow me to do what I want. It took me nearly 2-3 months to convince them. It’s just that they are not used to seeing anyone in our family doing business that involves hectic work and irregular timings. However, now they are happy about it.”

We made some really big blunders in terms of money, real estate decisions etc. However, all these were lessons that became our foundation.

V “It’s not as if we did not make mistakes. That is perhaps where I feel experience counts. We faced the consequences for the mistakes we committed. In fact we made some really big blunders in terms of money, real estate decisions etc. However, all these were lessons that became our foundation.” S It was a field that was totally new to him. They started off their journey with only one source of guidance- i.e. Google, which gave them the basic information like how to manufacture ice-cream, find right recipes etc. “For me there was no fear but I was just too excited. Right now we have our own ice-cream manufacturing unit but when we started we just did not know how we go about it. Therefore, it took us a lot of time to get all the facets of our business in place. Till date, every day is a challenge and we are changing a lot of things in our business model, following the feedback we get.” PERSONAL LIFE V He is truly and completely dedicated to building Hazzle as a brand and taking it to the next level. People who speak to him can immediately sense the entrepreneur streak in him. He is an extremely simple person who speaks less and works more. “Aahh for the past 2 years, there has been nothing in my mind except Hazzle. The only question on my mind is- “How to take Hazzle to the next level?” Since we started without knowing anything about business, we needed to exert and struggle much more than the regular entrepreneurs.” S Hard work is not a choice but is mandatory for any business to excel. Professional success has a lot to do with the personal life.

The challenge of being an entrepreneur V As his parents rightly said, he gets very less time to enjoy and relax unlike many of his friends because he works till late in the night and has no weekends or holidays. However, that is the challenge of being an entrepreneur. Starting a venture and running it successfully needs lots of hard work and efforts. His venture is of prime importance.

“I love what I do. I am pursuing what I am passionate about. Basically, I am a fun loving person, love trying different cuisines, love travelling a lot, though I am not able to travel much for the past few months. In addition, I ensure to explore anything new that pops up in the city.” JOURNEY SO FAR

S “Of course, I don’t think I am sacrificing or it’s a minus point not to have leisure unlike my peers or friends. One may feel that way if one looks at it from a short term perspective. But in the longer run, it is an investment for future when I am sure I would have all the time in the world.. Our vision is much bigger and the time and effort we are putting in is like the foundation because in future we may not have so much time as we shall have additional responsibilities.” Initial hiccups It was purely their passion that drove them to start Hazzle. They knew nothing about how to start a business. They both admit that it was like learning an art. red | july 2014 | 72

V The journey of the duo has not been easy but they definitely proved that hard work can move mountains. “It has been a nice journey so far. If you compare our peers or who started ventures before us, we have managed to reach the five-store target and we are pretty sure that soon we will be reaching out to the other cities. If we stick to our plan we will definitely succeed.”

S “The whole idea to start this venture was not just to make money but to create a brand that would become a national chain. This passion has been our driving force for all these years and many more to come. The journey so far has been wonderful. Now we are more comfortable and know things better.” What makes Hazzle different? Desserts are undoubtedly the favourites of all food lovers. When desserts are customised and are given in best flavours, it is for sure to becom a hit.

Every day is a challenge and we are changing a lot of things in our business model, following the feedback we get

V “Ice-creams. We have themed everything around ice-cream which no other restaurant has done. Be it our sizzlers, sundaes and coffees, we have done everything that we could do with ice-creams.” S “The concept of Hazzle is unique. It is a perfect place to have the best desserts, Italian food and coffees. It is the only place where you get fresh food at late night buffet too. It’s an Italian American model that caters to different needs and all age groups.” FUTURE PLANS V The store has managed to get a good brand image in the city and many ice-cream lovers seem to have given Hazzle the top slot on their list of best ice-cream places in Hyderabad. “In the coming months and before the year end, we wish to reach out to other metros like Chennai and Bangalore. We are working on the viability and implementation plan. Subsequently in the long run, we see Hazzle as a national brand.” S “We have opened three stores in the last four months. Right now we are enjoying the summers selling ice-creams. End of this year, we probably plan to open a few more stores. However, I prefer to take it slow because we are building a supply chain model. Designing the model and implementing it across different cities is a new challenge. Once this model is implemented in about 2-3 centres in 3-4 cities, I would be ready for a big expansion.” RAPIDFIRE

rom her debut film Ishtam in 2001 to playing the lead role opposite many a top hero in the industry - not to speak of her item numbers in a couple of films - actress Shriya Saran has come a long way. Portraying a woman-oriented character in her latest film Pavithra fetched her critical acclaim. Apart from Telugu films, she proved her mettle in Tamil, Malayalam and Hindi movies too. She also appeared in a few English and By Avinash Chandra Kannada Gembali films. An accomplished Kathak dancer, actively involved in various charity activities (she works for an NGO and opened a spa employing visually challenged people) and a soft spoken, humble, down-to-earth celebrity for many, Shriya has another world beyond films. The leggy lass is now awaiting the release of the multi-starrer Akkinenis’ Manam. Unlike many of her ilk, the actress reveals an inclination to spirituality. So Shriya doesn’t talk just films but on a wide range of topics.

T

hough failed to hog the limelight playing the role of an actress in her debut movie in Telugu ‘Rainbow’, she set the screen on fire in the introduction song ‘Time Bomb’ in her recent Telugu blockbuster ‘Legend.’ The film made Sonal Chauhan an instant rage among the youth and in fact the song earned her the sobriquet ‘Time Bomb Pilla’. This tall girl, with features resembling a Greek sculpture is yet another import from Bollywood where she bowled the audience over with her very first film ‘Jannat’ playing the role of Zoya opposite Emraan Hashmi. As the film turned out to be a success, her fans started calling her Zoya. Though fascinated by the film world, acting in the movies was never on Sonal’s mind. She dreamt of becoming an investigative journalist till she was spotted by director Kunal Deshmukh who pitchforked her into his directorial venture ‘Jannat’. red | july 2014 | 74

Hailing from Uttar Pradesh, Sonal completed her schooling in Delhi Public School. Later she shifted to Mumbai and had done modelling. She did romping and commercials for big brands including Lays (with Saif Ali Khan), Pepsi (with John Abraham). She also participated in a lot of pageants all over the world. She even got through the much-happening Miss World (Tourism) show that gave her a great beginning wherever she went. Crowds, young or old, went bonkers over her and cheered her with love and affection.

EXCERPTS

Reminiscing her journey from modelling to Tollywood via Bollywood, Sonal said that she was the rebellious wild child at 17 and wasn’t sure what life had planned for her. Little did she know that this was the age her life was about to change. She was approached by a photographer at a coffee joint, who insisted on clicking her photo. Though she was oblivious about it the next day, it was in the papers. The response was shocking. One image led to a shoot and before she knew it, she had become a celebrity of sort and started earning money at 17. Your latest film ‘Legend’ in Telugu is a stupendous hit. Tell us about the film, how did it happen? First of all I would like to thank the Telugu audience for making the film a big hit. I should ascribe its success to the director Boyapati Srinu sir and Balakrishna sir. It was a great experience working with both of them who together earlier had given a blockbuster ‘Simha’. I landed the role by sheer chance. I happened to be in Hyderabad for a show. Someone told me that they(the makers) were looking for a girl to act as a heroine opposite Balayya and they wanted me to meet them. Tell us about your experience acting with a senior actor Balakrishna in the film. After working with him I realized that he is such a big super star and he truly deserves credit for every bit of the film. He is an action hero and moreover he is a fantastic and humble human being. I was scared of acting with him because he is the senior most hero in the industry. I did not know about his cancer hospital but I learnt that he arranges free treatment for the poor people. He is an extremely intelligent man. Acting wise he is a superstar and a great dancer. In a nutshell he is an all-rounder.

What made you to come down to Tollywood? Soon after I finished ‘Jannat’, V.N.Aditya sir called me after seeing my portfolio through my agent. He was impressed and insisted on me signing ‘Rainbow.’ After all, it was a superb script and my character was well-etched, though the film remained as an also-ran. Though you are successful in Hindi, ‘Rainbow’ did not make it big. What was the reason? I don’t know the reason. Audience should know it. Everyone in the film did work hard. But it is audience who decide the fate of a film. But I am very happy that ‘Legend’ has done well. I should thank the audience for

films and one is in pre-production stage. Tell us the secret behind your success. Audience can make or break an actor. In this aspect I am grateful to the audience who accepted me. Every actor and artiste owe a lot to the audience. Once again I thank the people who accepted me as an actor and my success is attributed to them and I hope they keep loving me. Apart from Hindi and Telugu what are the other languages you are into? I did one film in Kannada that was about three years ago. But for that I have not done in any other language. Did you find any difference, actingwise, in Telugu and Hindi? But for the language, I find no difference To which do you give importance – glamour roles or emotive roles? Any actor would give importance to the role that has scope of more performance. As far as glamour is concerned there is a big team working for you – the director, make-up artiste and hairstylist. For me more important is audience for whom I need to focus on emotive and meatier roles. What are your upcoming movies? Right now I am doing a film in Hindi. There is one Telugu film that I cannot talk about it now as it is initial stages. Are you dubbing your own dialogues? No not yet. I hope I can do it for my next film and for ‘Legend’ I had a borrowed voice.

accepting me in the role.

Do you find difficult to lip sync? No not at all. Fortunately I am good at grasping languages. When I need to utter a dialogue, the director makes me to understand what is happening around and emotions of the scene.

After doing so many films in Hindi, did you feel comfortable acting in a Telugu film? Yes. I felt very comfortable. As an actor we should not have any regional feelings. Language should not be a barrier for an actor. As an actor my job is to play the role with full conviction. We are the director’s medium. We should completely surrender ourselves to the director and give him what he expects of the character. For me language doesn’t matter.

What are the criteria you consider for selecting a role? First of all I should like the character I am asked to play. I like ‘strong’ characters and till now I have done the girl next door roles. Now I want to perform something different. With the kind of crimes happening in the country I would like to play the role that can inspire the girls to stand up against the injustice meted out to them.

Tell us about your first hero Emraan Hashmi in ‘Jannat’ Emraan was my first co-star. He is a talented actor. He has a huge fan following.

Do you feel TV channels a threat to the survival of cinema? No. Not at all. Though people stay glued to the TVs for soaps, they prefer watching movies only on big screens

In a short span of 6 years, you did 8

where only they can enjoy the digital effects of the film.

We are the director’s medium. We should completely surrender to him and give him what he expects of the character.

What is that change you want to see in the society as a youngster? I want the young girls not to be scared of stalkers and they should learn selfdefense to fight against such boors in the society. Who is your guiding force in the family? My father and my mother. Tell us about your family background I belong to Delhi. My father is working for UP police. My mother is a housewife. Any siblings? I have three siblings. Do you have any serious relationships? I am single and don’t have any boyfriend. I am focusing on my work. It seems you walked the ramp for many fashion shows and has modeled in print campaigns for brands like LG, Reliance CDMA, Hero Honda Passion, Nokia, Hindustan Times, Delhi Times. Tell us about your experience. I was very young when I started modeling. It was a fantastic experience. At young age I was earning money on my own. I was happy with the kind of money I was earning. I walked the ramp and my photographs used to come in newspapers. I really enjoyed doing all that without taking anything too seriously. Which one do you prefer most – modeling or acting? I like both of them.

Hailing from a conservative family didn’t you feel embarrassed to enact bold/intimate scenes in Jannat/3G? I never did any bold scenes in ‘Jannat’. It was completely a clean film and my role was that of a girl next door, very sweet and simple who falls in love with the hero. Tell us about your education. I studied at Delhi Public School in Noida and then Philosophy honors at Gargi College in New Delhi.

HOLLYWOOD MASALA

Nina, Ian Reunited Bulgarian Canadian actress, singer, and model Nina Dobrev and American actor and model Ian Somerhalder are said to be dating again. The duo earlier were broken up for a long time before Nina’s mother, Michaela Constantine, reportedly intervened. Michaela is a big fan of Ian’s, and that much was clear when she was tweeting in support of his recent congressional appearance to promote animal and environmental rights. Michaela probably heard about her daughter’s love life in the news, and decided that the best way to stop Nina (Rumours had been circulating for weeks now that Nina was hooking up with a member of a band) was to get her back with Ian. Nina’s reportedly very close to her parents, and probably didn’t want her mother to be disappointed. Now Nina and Ian are well on their way to getting back together, thanks to Michaela.

‘Lindsay Sex List Bulls--t!’ Like American actor, director, screenwriter James Franco before him, Adam Noah Levine, American singer-songwriter and musician, widely known as the lead vocalist for Los Angeles pop rock band Maroon 5, denied that he had sex with American actress, model, producer and recording artiste Lindsay Lohan, as her ‘infamous’ list claims. Franco denied sleeping with Lohan in a Howard Stern Show appearance; Levine also told Howard that the allegation was false and baseless. The 35-year-old appears on the Lindsay Lohan sex list, which she admits she wrote and is a virtual who’s who of actors, musicians and other conquests. Stern, the radio host pointed out that no one on the list has confessed to actually belonging on it (the list).

BOLLYWOOD MASALA Dating Blossoms Into Marital Bliss Looks like their years old dating fructified at last. It is learnt that both the families of Katrina Kaif and Ranbeer Kapoor gave the nod to their ‘love’ that took years to blossom. If sources are to be believed the celebrity couple is all set to tie the knot next year and the industry is already gearing up for the big fat wedding. Besides being the Bollywood’s numero uno actor, Ranbeer is one of the most eligible bachelors. He is the son of veteran actors Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh and the scion of the Kapoor khandan. His fiancée Katrina Kaif is a British Indian foreign actress, whose nationality has often been questioned. It may be recalled that though both Ranbir and Katrina denied their relationship in public, their holiday pictures that got leaked suggest something else. With so many interesting twists to their relationship, their love is all set to consummate. Whether Katrina will be allowed to act post-marriage is a million dollar question now.

Akshay To Romance Kriti Basking in the glory of his recent hit ‘Holiday’, Akshay Kumar is all set to romance Tiger Shroff’s ‘Heropanti’ heroine in his upcoming comedy, ‘Singh Is Bling’ being directed by Prabhu Deva. Earlier rumours were rife that Kareena Kapoor has been roped into play the female lead. But the lucky one to pair opposite Akshay is Kriti Sanon who plays a dancer in the film. The film will be shot in Cape Town and across Africa as the story requires exotic locales. The reason for Kriti’s selection is that her dancer-like physique and impressive moves, says a source. Contrary to popular belief, the film is not a sequel to the 2008 Akshay Kumar-Katrina Kaif starrer, Singh Is King. The only similarity is that Akshay Kumar once again plays a sardar in the film. Akshay saw ‘Heropanti’ and liked Kriti. It was he who suggested she’d be apt for the role, sources revealed.

TOLLYWOOD MASALA Bunny Does A Feat Looks like stylish star Allu Arjun has set a new benchmark for himself. While his recent blockbuster ‘Race Gurram’ stood as all time 4th highest grosser by collecting Rs.60 cr, the number of his Facebook followers touched 50 lakh mark making it even more memorable for this lad as he is the first South Indian hero to achieve this feat of sort. The young actor uploaded a Facebook video thanking his fans in the South for making it possible. He has announced that he has plans to post the picture of his son Ayaan shortly on the social network. Bunny is currently undergoing training for the powerful role of Gona Ganna Reddy in ‘Rudrama Devi’ and the pre-production work of Trivikram’s project is in full swing and the shoot is likely to start in August.

Samanta The Lucky Mascot She made it into hearts of Telugu audience in the film ‘Em Maya Chesave’. The success of the film made Samantha the most sought after actress in the Telugu Tinsel Town. Apart from ‘Dookudu’opposite Prince Mahesh, she gave a big hit acting in the last year’s VenkateshMahesh multi-starrer ‘Seethamma Vaakitlo Sirimalle Chettu’ playing opposite Mahesh Babu. With the success of recent Akkinenis starrer ‘Manam’, she proved to be the Lucky Mascot for multi-starrers. If the sources are to be believed she would be roped into play the heroine in the upcoming multi-starrer of Nagarjun and Jr NTR. Let us hope this film too would turn out to be a blockbuster and fetch laurels to Sassy Samantha.

ost of the Tollywood heroes were once baddies. Krishnam Raju, Mohanbabu, Srikant, J.D.Chakravarthy et al fall into the genre. Even NTR played Girisam, a character with negative shades in 'Kanyashulkam.' Mega Star Chiranjeevi too acted in negative roles in his early films. Taking a cue from his seniors, perhaps, Mahesh Sriram, an upcoming actor made his foray into Tollywod playing villain in his very first movie 'Chinna Cinema'. Though the film remained an also-ran, he earned an instant recognition. It was his second film 'Hang Up' that really tapped the inherent talent of this Hyderabad lad. A multimedia professional, Mahesh runs an animation company in India, besides heading a 3D animation company in Houston. Mahesh, an NRI, enjoys working on the creative projects and is introducing some new technologies in animations industry in India. The star talks of his journey till now. How did acting happen? Since my childhood the glamour world attracted me. After winning a few contests in my college and NCC, I got closer to my dream. I began doing photo shoots, ramp modelling and commercial ads that led me to

What made you to choose a negative character in your debut film? When the director narrated the role, I found it different and interesting. So I gave it a try. Do you think negative roles are more challenging? Any kind of role is a challenge for an actor. He/she has to do a lot of homework. Certainly, playing a negative character is a bigger challenge as the actor has to create a sort of fear and hatred among his audience whenever he appears on the scene. It’s very interesting. Who are your idols in the lead as well as negative roles? I admire highly versatile Kamal Hassan. I like Kota Srinivas Rao and Prakash Raj for their villainy. What is your dream role? That’s an interesting question but difficult to answer. I wish to play all kinds of roles. I like the role played by Al Pacino in the film ‘The Godfather’ . Among the characters you played, which one is your favorite and why? I enjoyed all the roles I played till now as each of them is different from the other. In ‘Chinna Cinema’ I played the role of a businessman BJ, an angry young man.

‘Hang Up’ was a thriller where I played a psycho killer. My next film is ‘Welcome to America’ will be releasing soon. I play a very different and interesting role of a US politician. Modelling, photography, animation or acting; which do you enjoy the most? All of them. I started my career doing fashion shows and modelling. Modelling and acting have been my passion since my childhood. I do enjoy working in films. Which movie if re-made would you like to work in? Why? Nagarjuna’s ‘Shiva’. It is an intense character. Do you like to continue as Bad Boy? I look forward to playing different roles. What are your future projects? ‘Welcome to America’ is getting ready to be released. In the movie I play quite an interesting role as a US politician. Most of the shoot took place in the US in good locales. A particular scene was shot inside the capital building and in the Governor’s office. It was a special moment for me! The movie is directed by Srini Uppalapu. There are some more projects that are yet to be finalised. red | July 2014 | 81

GADGETS

MUST OWN GIZMOS

Though monsoon is delayed and the mercury is soaring newer heights day by day, here are the cool gadgets that flood the market for those tech-savvy.

By Avinash Chandra Gembali

OnePlus One OnePlus One is a phablet from Oppo with 5.5in 1080p screen, with a Sony 13MP Exmor camera. Running with the same quad-core Snapdragon 801 chipset, which is seen in the Samsung S5 and HTC One M8, this gadget bests S5 and M8 with 3GB RAM. It's just a shade smaller than the Galaxy Note 3 in terms of overall footprint, but closely resembles the Nexus 5 in terms of its lines and the matte finish of the rubberized-for-grip plastic back. It is one of the best looking Android phones recently launched and its performance is unparalleled. The most impressive feature is the effective and good-looking screen at this size.

LASER LADY By Ranita Ray

T

o look good one needn’t anymore pray to the cosmic powers. One can just walk into Cosmos Laser Centre. It won’t be wrong to call it the ultimate beauty spot where looks get a facelift. The brain behind the centre from where people walk out with restored confidence and revived spirits is none other than cosmetic surgeon Dr.K. Krishna Priya. Krishna Priya comes across as a perfect example of those who dare to break the mould. Instead of adopting the ‘herd mentality’ and treading the beaten path, she blazed her own trail. Started young, she completed two decades in this field and is still going strong. In the absence of awareness in this ‘not fully tapped’ field, she took the risk, and accepted the challenge with utmost courage. She went on acquiring knowledge from every possible source. Hence her skills are a cumulative result of the experiences she gained working with several eminent doctors across the world. Today she occupies a pride position in the list of veterans of cosmetic surgery.

Foundation Born and brought up in Visakhapatnam, Krishna Priya completed her basic education from the Visakha Valley School. She was highly focused right from her childhood and dedicated to academic life. No wonder, she secured the first position in the state in her Intermediate. She also obtained a national merit scholarship throughout her medical studies. A student of Andhra Medical College, 1985-90 batch, she completed her post-graduation in Nuclear Medicine at Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Mumbai, in 1995. However, her stay in Mumbai gave her an opportunity to explore the world of cosmetology and enter the field of cosmetic reconstructive surgery and this laid the foundation to her brainchild- Cosmos. Turning point Her fascination for the field made her eager to learn more about the subject. Thus, pursuing her passion, between 1995-1997 she attended a lot of national and international conferences in countries like Switzerland, Bangkok, Malaysia, Germany, France and Italy. She did a course in hair transplantation in Berlin. She learnt many other different technologies from various places, like Aptos Thread Lift from Bangkok, Micro Pigmentation from Zurich and Palomar Laser from the US etc. It was the training she got in Milan (Italy) on lasers which turned out to be the game changer for her. It gave her a thorough knowledge of the latest and right procedures and equipment related to cosmetic surgery. In 1996, she attained her fellowship in Cosmetic Reconstructive Surgery from Zurich. The same year, along with her husband Dr.K.Gopala Krishna, she created her own universe offering life changing treatments in the City of Destiny and founded ‘Cosmos Laser Centre’.

only the lack of awareness which made it all the more challenging. I believe it is the leader who has to take the pain of establishing a new trend and I am proud of the fact that Cosmos is the pioneer laser centre for skin treatments with the state-of-the-art technology in the coastal Andhra. The initial two years were tough, but today one can see such centers mushrooming all over the state. I am glad we could inspire many. Today, doctors send their young children who are interested in this field to Cosmos to get trained under me,” she says with justified pride. Support Her father Mr. S.V.Sarveswar Rao is a retired public prosecutor and mother Dr. S Kousalya obtained Ph.D from Andhra University. They gave her all the support needed to join the medical profession. Giving all the credit to her husband for her success, she says, “It was my dream to become a cosmetic surgeon and I could translate it into a reality only because of my husband. He has been there with me from the beginning- right from attending conferences to supporting me in every possible way. Without him, I wouldn’t have achieved what I have today. Equally understanding are my daughters Sindhura and Nanditha. They also accompanied us to many seminars. In fact, my elder daughter wants to be a doctor like me.”

“We started our treatments with non surgical facelifts followed by lasers, botox, facial reshaping with fillers, laser hair removal, permanent tattoo removal, skin rejuvenation with lasers. Soon skin lightening treatment or Laser Cosmo Glow became a huge hit among women and we had clients coming from all over the state and beyond.” Christening Cosmos means universe. “We work extensively with laser, which is nothing but light therapy. Not just this, we wanted to deliver best of technology that the universe has to offer, to the City of Destiny. We, at Cosmos, have been reconstructing and re-defining features that are denied. What name could have been more apt than this?” asks Krishna Priya. Head On Almost 20 years back, Krishna Priya opened a facility offering contemporary treatments to Vizag. The path she had chosen was certainly not a rosy one. “It was a big risk we had taken, as for majority of the local people there was hardly any difference between regular beauty treatments and cosmetology. No exaggeration, there were instances when even a few of medical professionals asked my husband, “Why did your wife a qualified doctor open a salon?” It is

Lack of awareness made my job all the more challenging.

No Danger She claims that the laser technology which is extensively used in the treatment is not at all dangerous if it is taken under the guidance of qualified professionals. She stresses that the cases at her clinic are handled either by her or her husband. She also takes all the necessary precautions, giving a very mild test patch in the first session to check the reaction of the client’s skin. Basing on that, the treatment is taken forward. Word of Caution It is mandatory that those who go through a laser session shouldn’t use creams for two-three weeks; avoid beauty salons and services like facials or bleaching. There are no side effects when one follows these instructions. Tricky Tasks She finds ignorant clients difficult to handle. People generally go to different places and get varied opinions and then come with pre-conceived notions. Trouble only arises when instructions are not followed which leads to stressful situations for both doctors and clients. Job Satisfaction She is so satisfied with her profession that she says that given a chance, she would like to take up this job even in her next life. Perhaps, it is this intense love for her field that influenced the next generation and both the daughters have also taken up medical studies. There are occasions when though her clients are thoroughly satisfied with her services, a perfectionist that she is, Priya insists on continuing the treatments till the time she herself feels that she has given her best. She doesn’t mind going that extra mile to do justice to the money her clients spend for the services, whatever may be the time taken for it. Her Forte

It is a beautiful field to work in. But only those who have love for it should come as it demands immense patience.

Acne scar revision and facial reshaping! “No boasting, but I can even treat severe scarring in just 2-3 sessions. I use a combination of laser, scar revision, radio surgery and rolling and give the patient a scar-free clear skin. It’s a unique treatment very much needed for our coastal regions.” Not just this, from lasers to facial reshaping - she is known for doing wonders in her field. Cosmos is best in laser treatments. They are the top choice when it is about permanent tattoo removal. One can be assured that there is no scar or spot left behind, no matter how big the tattoo is. Memorable Case She recollects a case of a young girl from Odisha who had leucoderma patches almost all over her body. Her wedding was fixed and her mother was worried that the marriage would be cancelled, if the members of groom’s family find those spots while performing the ‘haldi ritual’. Their financial status was also coming in the way of affording the treatment. “Even though monetarily it didn’t benefit me or rather I was at loss, I took up the case. I worked almost continuously for 2-3 days on her and corrected those areas. It was a painstaking process as I had to micro pigment each of the affected patches matching her skin tone. It was successful, and the girl is happily married.”

Women & Cosmetology “Women can make great cosmetology professionals, as it is a very artistic field, which needs a lot of creativity, sensitivity and patience. I believe women, being elegant perfectionists, are naturally blessed with it.” Advice to Budding Talents “It is a beautiful field to work in. But only those who have love for it should opt for it as it demands immense patience. This profession is not too demanding on the personal front as it is not an emergency field. Most importantly those in this field have the opportunity of changing lives by redefining and restoring not just the looks but also a person’s lost confidence. I couldn’t have wished for more!” Future Plan Cosmos already has a branch in Hyderabad and she doesn’t intend to expand any further as yet. She feels at this stage expansion might dilute the quality of the services.

All she wishes to do, is, make her own cup of tea, walk on the subtle shores, waves touching her feet, experience the divinity of the horizon. Just sit amidst the refreshing serenity that god has blessed with. The very thought of this" she says brings a smile on her face. Her Thoughts •

Though it is healthy, I don’t believe in competition or running behind something to outpace someone. I honestly think that it is the journey to achieve your goal which is most beautiful, than the goal itself.

One should experience and enjoy every minute of the journey, rather than worry about someone else doing better than you.

Only hard work, perseverance and your love for what you do can grant you success.

Those who seek cosmetic corrections need to learn to be reasonable with expectations. Rushing up the treatment or expecting overnight miracles can cause damage for lifetime.

Anonymity She is a trained Kuchipudi and Bharatnatyam dancer and she started learning them when she was just eight years old and was a disciple of Sri.Vempati Chinna Satyam and Smt. Bala Kondala Rao for almost two decades. Besides, being an ace cosmetic surgeon, she is an amazing cook. She is the ultimate ruler of her kitchen, where she never allows anyone else to cook. Bucket List The travel channel TLC is her favourite and she follows it very religiously. Although she has travelled to many places, her thirst for exploring the world is not quenched yet. She wishes to travel extensively starting from the Himalayas, to her long list of temples of India right from Kashmir to Kanyakumari, she says with a laugh. Only thereafter, she likes to go for tours abroad. Priya, an animal lover, also nurses a dream to open a temporary shelter or transit house for pets, especially dogs. The idea is to give refuge to the pets that lost their way to their owners’ house and try to send them back to their owners. Along with her daughters, she has rescued a few such dogs till now and found home for them. Idol She idolizes her maternal uncle Mr. Dr.D.V.Nanda Kumar MS. He is her role model and an honest poor man’s doctor. A neuro surgeon by profession, he was known for his philanthropy and dynamism. Ideal way of spending 24 hours She feels she is already blessed with the luxury of living in front of the roaring waves and shimmering sands where she views the golden rays of the rising and setting sun against a backdrop of a panoramic view of the horizon.

Many people mistake cosmetology for regular beauty treatments.

ll that glitter and glamour notwithstanding, the fashion industry is certainly not a bed of roses. If it is tough to break into this bastion, it is even tougher to survive here as it thrives on high precision and constant innovation. Only a few with irrepressible passion and ingenuity can walk away with accolades on this slippery ramp. Asmita Marwa is one of those very few who made it to the top with their creative genius, that too from Andhra Pradesh. She is the first Telugu woman fashion designer to enter Tollywood, bringing it a new wave look. Her creations in films like Santosham and Manmadhudu stand testimony to her competence and calibre.

Shoot by Dhana Vijay

Looking at Asmita’s pretty face and perfect figure, one cannot but help wondering why she herself did not take to the ramp. Dressing the luminaries is what she chose to do. She almost instantly grabbed the attention of the film industry with her unique approach to design. In the trend-following fashion world, Asmita emerges as an original. The ace designer settles down for a candid chat and extempore photo shoot with red despite her busy schedule.

E x c e r p t s

Early days Attracted to aesthetics and art right from the childhood, Asmita chose a field that gave her scope to give vent to her artistic skills. One need not look too far to find out what was the source of her inspiration as she hails from a family of creative artists. “My mother is the most stylish woman I have ever known. She is also an artist who knows the power of colours. My grandmother, who wore only whites and off whites, used to look stunning and carry those ‘not much preferred’ colours with great élan and elegance. Another grandmother used to design jewellery and knit sweaters. She could create great pieces of art. I was brought up in an environment that inculcated a sense of style in me.”

untouched by external forces. This uniqueness of her label earned her a huge fan following not only in Hyderabad but also outside the city. Today when many designers have moved away to the wedding wear, she stands her ground Her Stamp In this field every designer leaves his/her own stamp. Asmita’s speciality is she is modern in her creations but doesn’t envisage a design without including our rich and vibrant culture. Her work reflects evolved sensibilities. No wonder, her designs ensure global aesthetics even though she creates them with native handlooms and textiles. Asmita draws

husband who is highly supportive and accommodating. Likeminded as they are, they love to live life to the hilt. “I did not work for a couple of years after my son was born as I wanted to spend all my time taking care of him and doing everything for him as a mother. When he started going to school and had become independent, I found a lot of time on my hands. That was when I got back to work. As it was a natural and gradual transition, juggling or handling motherhood and profession was not tough for me. Nothing was ever planned; I just took each day as it came. Of course, I definitely look into myself and set my priorities right. Unless and until I am totally convinced and ready to take up a task, I don’t venture into it.” Family’s Viewpoint Women seldom enjoy professional success and family’s support too. Asmita falls in that rare category which is twice blessed. Her husband Harvesh and son Karan feel proud of her achievements. “Initially my husband helped me in finding my feet in the business, giving me very valuable suggestions about market trends,” says a grateful Asmita.

Into the Fashion World A few years ago, fashion designing was not considered a regular career, especially for girls. In such a scenario Asmita got an opportunity to design dresses for a film purely because of her innate sense of style and skill. Though working in the film field gave her the much-needed confidence, she didn’t want to stay restricted to this line alone as she realised that fashion had a greater meaning and scope. Styling for films involves only forecasting trends. But for Asmita, fashion is creating something that defines her perception and reflects her persona.

Spiritual Inclination She is a dynamic fashion designer alright but at the same time she is extremely calm and believes in introspection. She understands that every individual is different and unique with his/her own dreams, desires and wishes.

Hurdles & Hiccups Asmita who entered the world of designing following her ardour, soon discovered that this glamorous world was the ground for cutthroat competition and full of nitpicking detractors. “I experienced these negative vibes for the first time when I went to the fashion week. A lot of people, who I hitherto considered friends, suddenly started looking at me as a rival. However, I resolved to rise above this and insulate myself. I focussed on my work and was confident of my designs.” Challenges Faced It is very difficult to make people accept out of the box designs but she has managed to create her own clientele that loves and adores her. She attributes this growing popularity to her sticking to her own design philosophy which is

influence from Japanese traits. That is why they are very boxy with sharp cuts. She beautifully crafts the Indian traditional textiles like Banaras, Chanderi into the current favourites like palazzos, skirts, cigarette pants. Balancing personal & professional life Espousing a great clarity of thought, Asmita has her priorities straight and in order. She is passionate about her profession but she is equally dedicated to her family. An adorable wife and a proud mother, she fulfils her personal and professional obligations with great ease and success. She considers herself very lucky to have got Harvesh as her

Calling life a journey every individual has to undertake with equanimity, Asmita says, “We have to lead our lives to the best of our abilities. When things don’t seem to happen the way you want, just say-This too shall pass.” “I have always been inclined towards spirituality. I greatly admire Deepak Chopra and he is my Guru in all respects. I find his books very inspirational and have been reading them for the past 15 years. I can say with confidence that they made me what I am today. Over the years, I have learnt to focus inwards and connect to myself. All of us are special in one way or the other and we must tap our latent potential. Unless and until we are happy, we cannot do it.”

You have to pay them to grace your show or make them wear your creations. But all those who came to my show were my well wishers and they were so proud of me. Anyway success did not reach my head. That is the reason why I could earn so many friends.” Source of Inspiration An extensive traveller, Asmita draws inspiration from anything and everything – whether it is something she sees in a museum or the cuisines she explores or the people she meets. Explaining how even trivia become a source of inspiration, she says, “I remember, when I went to Turkey, I bought this beautiful cutlery with Whirling Dervish dancers (sufi dancers) on them. I was so fascinated by that, that I created silhouettes with that print.” Favourites in the fashion world She admires Anamika Khanna for her sense of style, cuts, embroidery and prints. She believes Anamika has a refined sense of fashion. She is also an admirer of Japanese designers like Yamamoto and Rei Kawakubo. Advice to the aspiring designers

HER THOUGHTS • Don't change the essence of who you are as a person. • Don’t allow success to get to your head. • Change is the only constant thing in life. • I enjoy the journey and never bother about the destination. • Every day is a learning experience.

“Fashion world is a tough place and sustainability is a challenge. I see many students coming to me for internship but to my dismay I notice they are not focussed. Fashion designing course seems to be just an additional tag to acquire for unmarried girls. There is no sense of commitment towards the profession. It takes a long time to create a niche for yourself in this field. It is very easy to get a degree and do a show. But the most important questions are – ‘What next?’, ‘Where are you?’, ‘Are you creating any brand?’, ‘Do you have any design philosophy and are you living up to it?’. Very few people seem to see fashion designing from a long term perspective. Everybody is copying and not thinking of creating his or her own style. So, commitment and individuality are very essential to become a successful fashion designer.” Future plans

Your fashion is evergreen and so are you Am I (laughs)? I think it’s my DNA. Of course, there are certain beauty and fitness regimen I strictly follow. I do the routine cleansing, toning, moisturising etc but use minimal or no make-up as far as possible. I watch my food intake as I am a big foodie and eat my dessert every day. I don’t follow a diet or workout regimen just because it worked for someone else. You need to connect to yourself and analyse what your body is, what it needs. If you follow this simple funda, trust me, you can definitely look 10 to 15 years younger than what you really are. Eat right and exercise regularly. Balance your intake of food so that you can eat everything. Our bodies are evolved and they know what is right and wrong for them. All we need to do is, listen to them.” Moments of Regret “No regrets, none at all. I am in this field because I love it. I am happy that I am able to do what I really want to do. This is the life for which I really worked.” Moment of Achievement Like that of any other entrepreneur, her life too has seen quite a few ups and downs. But notable among her achievements are styling celebrities like Nagarjuna and Mahesh Babu and making her label a ‘must explore option’ for fashion lovers. “My most memorable achievement is when I debuted in Lakme Fashion week. I had many friends from film industry, who on their own had come all the way to Mumbai to support and encourage me. Generally the celebrities come with a tag.

She believes in taking life as it comes. She is not the one to hurry through it. Though she does run a studio cum store in the city, she wishes to have it in a more commercially visible and easily accessible place. This is her top priority. In addition, her long term plan is to open stores across India, starting from Bengaluru.

QUICK SIX What are you obsessed with? My lipstick What are your favourite colours? White, ivory and red Three things that you always carry with you. Money, cell phone and lipstick One person whom you enjoyed designing for Nagarjuna, he has a sense of style. He reposes immense trust and confidence in my capabilities as a designer. One person you wish to design for and why? Jennifer Lopez because she is gorgeous and a diva who loves experimenting. If not fashion industry then you would be in? Food industry, I wish to open a restaurant. One thing about you that nobody knows I am a very good cook and have a sharp sense of taste

“

For me, the Sun is the supreme God and I feel strongly connected to Him, says this man who lights up the horizon of education. Well, when the Sun is his ultimate faith, he is bound to rise. Yes, we are talking about Mr.Srikanth Jasti, the founder, Chairman & Managing Director of Sun International Institute. Stepping out of the darkness that cloaked his life at a very tender age, Srikanth stands tall in the world of education. Revering Dr. A.P.J.Abdul Kalam as his idol, he has been literally enlightening thousands of minds.

Give us a brief account of your early life I lost my father when I was hardly seven. He was a landlord and had lots of farming lands. He tried his luck in business, but unfortunately it collapsed and he lost all his properties. He couldn’t take the shock and passed away. It came heavily on the ones who were left behind- my mother and me. From the luxury of a colossal house we had to shift to a single bedroom house in a small village called Buddhavaram near Gannavaram in Krishna district. Life threw many challenges at us, but we overcame all of them. As I was going through my studies, I developed interest in cricket. One fine day, my cousin, Bujji who was a good cricketer in his own right observed my keen interest in the game and encouraged me to take it up more seriously. Under his guidance, I started playing for Krishna district when I was in the eighth standard. Soon I was playing for the state and captained the state team in different age groups. I had M.S.K.Prasad and Amit Patra as my colleagues and played against Anil Kumble, Rahul Dravid and Venkatpati Raju. By then the passion for cricket had turned into a way of life for me. I moved to Vizag in 1992, where I played for railways for two years and Naval Dockyard for three years. What made you shift your focus from passion to profession? Destiny had brought me to this city and I found my soul mate Asha here. However, I wasn’t doing anything substantial. Despite the fact that I was deeply in love with her, I felt I was not eligible to marry her. She belongs to an educated family- her father was a renowned professor of AU and mother had a doctoral degree. I decided to leave cricket and take up a proper job. I got the break at Pratyusha Shipping, the company owned by Minister Mr.Ganta Srinivas Rao. There I worked as the Manager of Transport. It changed my life thoroughly. This gave me an opportunity to work with Mr. Rao at close quarters. He trained me professionally.

From shipping to education, how did it happen? Within the next few years, Ganta sir joined politics. I worked extensively for him even during that phase. After a while I felt it was high time I expanded my horizons. Though he was a little hesitant initially, he relented. Thus, I left for an interior place called Kotaya in West Bengal and started working for a company. I even thought of shifting my family there. But with just an-yearold son at home, we dropped the idea and I returned to Vizag. I was in search of a job again, when my father-in-law introduced me to Mr.V.Pujari, the founder of Indo-American Institutions. I joined him as Manager Adminstration in 1998-99. We started with hotel management and in a span of six years, I helped him open a degree college, a school and an MBA College. Even, Asha joined us as the admission counselor. In 2003, we were blessed with our daughter and felt we need to reinforce our finances to give our kids better lives and thought of opening our own institute. My colleague Mr.Dillip Acharaya, a hospitality professional, boosted my confidence. All that we needed was a capital of Rs.20 lakh. My cousins and friends like Choudhury, Kalyan, Harish, Krishna and Dr.Prasad, came forward to help me. Thus, in 2004 Sun Hotel Management College was born.

How did you overcome the hurdles? I never take anything as an obstacle, thanks to my mother’s training. She taught me high values. She worked hard from a very young age. She did every possible work- from farming on a small piece of land to dairy and poultry business. She never let me feel the heat of the problems. Nor did she ever compromise on any of my comforts whether it was having new clothes for festivals or studying at St. John’s. I saw her working 15 to18 hours a day. This habit I picked up from her. Today we have everything, yet I work for 18 hours a day to give my kids and staff a comfortable living. So I say with confidence that I can overcome hurdles with ease. Didn’t it take a toll on your personal life? Luckily I have my friends and cousins as my partners. Even my wife shares my professional space. So I do not miss family. What was your next plunge? There was a good hike in the land cost during 2007-08. I wanted to try my hand in this arena that could add to our coffers. I bought and sold a few properties. I also built a small 25-roomhotel, called Surya Residency, besides opening a restaurant named Guma Gumalu. Education being the area of my primary focus, I tried expanding it further with the money generated from these businesses. Thus, in 2008 we opened the Sun International Institute in Hyderabad.

From a job holder to entrepreneur, any hurdles you faced? There wasn’t enough awareness among people about hotel management. We had a tough time convincing parents, especially those of girl students. I still remember how Asha took a pledge before the idol of Lord Venkateswara and gave away her gold ornaments, which were her only assets and prayed to Him to give us 60 admissions. I was touched, at the same time felt helpless too. By the God’s grace, we achieved our target. With the first earning from our institute I bought her a little jewellery which I could afford then. In last one decade, over 5,000 students passed out from our institutes.

red | July 2014 | 99

My father-in-law, who retired from service by then, took charge of our new branch. My sister-in-law Vani also joined us as a director. Today we have 600 students in Hyderabad and 650 in Vizag. We added MBA and BBA courses too. How do you score over others? We have a unique concept, called Industry Integrated Programme (IIP). While our students have 70% classroom learning, IIP gives them the remaining 30% real time experience in industries. None of the institutes in the state offer such a facility, which allows students to have a hang of the work that they soon will be taking up. I can proudly say 1,500 of our students are placed abroad and the rest have got pretty plum jobs in India. What was the game changer for you? Asha came as my Lady Luck. Every opportunity I got was a turning point. I came across a few people like Bujji, Mr. Pujari and Ganta sir, from whom I learnt about humanity and leadership. I learnt to be dynamic. It was R.V.V.K.Prasad who taught me humility. Ganta sir is always with me as my mentor and well-wisher. Do you offer ‘free education’? Till now, we are not directly tied up with the government. However, all the partners and key post holders, nine of us, bear

the expenses of a deserving poor student annually. We have proposals to reserve five free seats each for Telangana and Seemaandhra, to be given on government recommendations. What are your future plans? We are planning to open three more branches in Warangal, Tirupati and Vijayawada. As there is around 90% gap in demand and supply in hospitality sector at national level, we are trying to create more qualified people. Thus we will focus on this subject, instead of introducing new ones. What is your take on state bifurcation? The state division might have hurt feelings of many, but I feel it’s time we bounced back. Our new state, especially Visakhapatnam, has immense tourism potential. We should develop it on lines of Malaysia, Singapore and Dubai. This will give a good boom to hospitality industry and add to the state’s revenue. Naturally, education related to tourism will also have a great scope. OFF THE JOB What is your favourite pastime? I have a little fancy for cars and love long drives. Whenever I get an opportunity, I like to go on a drive, listening to some good music. How would you design a date for your wife? It will be definitely at home, as it is the favourite place for both of us. But I try to make it exclusive with only two of us around. I choose 25th May which is her birthday. Coincidentally it is our daughter’s birthday too and a very special day for me. Anything you want to change about your life? If I can go back into the past, I would like to be more educated.

What is your idea of life? I am a believer of the maxim ‘simple living, high thinking’. I am a simple man. By Shirdi Sai and Venkateswara Swami’s blessings I have everything and all the ingredients of a rich life. But I never show off or like to flaunt my riches. The best advice you ever got! Live and let live! Define luxury It is the comfort of having healthy breakfast, lunch and dinner with the whole family. What is education? It is must for everyone. However, the true meaning of education is not reading books or the academic achievements. It is living life in a respectable way. Are you a good manager? Those who work with me can answer it better. What are your strengths and weaknesses? My family is both my strength and weakness. What is Vizag for you? I was re-born here. PERSONAL PREFERENCES Book

I found my soulmate Asha in the City of Destiny

He is more of a friend to me with whom I can share everything.

AN EXCITING JOURNEY: ASHA Every day is a new day; it has been an exciting journey. He is always smiling, very patient and never loses his cool. I am the one who keeps complaining or cribbing when someone at home or work does something wrong. Instead of taking them to task, he counsels them patiently. He is more of a friend to me with whom I can share everything. There are no secrets between us. He is a very simple man who doesn’t boast. He doesn’t mince his words. This is the quality I like the best in him. Unlike other guys, who try to impress girls, he never pulled any stunts with me. It was I who tried to impress him. The shelf life of anything fake, even a feeling, is short. What is genuine lasts forever. It is 16 years since we were married, and our bonding grows stronger by the day.

DAUGHTER NITHYA He never scolds me nor gets angry with me. He has a lot of patience; no matter how tired he listens to me if I have anything to share. He is also very caring. He is my role model. I don’t know how he manages to work so hard. Once I grow up I would like to open an institute like his and work like him. Even, my mom is also a very loving person. I am lucky to have a mom and dad like them.

SON: JAI NAREN He is a very cool dad. Although he follows strict discipline in his life, he never forces us to do so. The only condition he puts forth is that we should not do anything wrong. He is a man of word and keeps up whatever promises he makes- like he promised me to give iPhone 5S if I scored well in my 10th Class and he did gift me one. He never imposes his decisions on me. I wish to become an actor, he doesn’t object.

Tell us about your journey so far. My father Mr.Panduranga Rao was a professor of Commerce and Management at AU and my mother the late Dr. Leela Kumari, was a PhD-holder. My parents, especially my mother wanted me to be a medical doctor. But my education went haywire due to the early marriage. However with the encouragement given by Srikanth, my mother-in-law and my parents, I resumed studies. But there was another break when I was in the 1st year of my graduation as I was in the family way. I never expected that one day I would be heading an educational institute. Much later, my professional journey began with Vikas and then with Indo-American Institute. I cleared all the 24 papers at one go and passed in the first division. At Srikanth’s behest I enrolled for MBA course. By then we had started our own institute and was compelled to leave my studies once again due to work pressure. Later, as we introduced MBA I felt guilty to counsel MBA aspirants, when I myself wasn’t qualified in the subject. With my mother’s support, I prepared to clear two years’ papers at one go. Unfortunately, the date of the first exam coincided with the 11th day of her death ceremony. Yet I wrote all the exams and passed out with flying colours. I thought it was the best tribute to her. What is your primary focus? I try to ensure cent per cent placement of our students. Though we did struggle in the first two/three years, we are able to achieve it now. Thanks to the boom in the hospitality industry. What are your initiatives? We have tie-ups with international hotels under Temporary Employment Program. This allows our students to work as management trainees in different international hotels in countries like Germany, Singapore, US, UK. This exposure, besides the certificates, boosts their confidence. This was my initiative.

AN EVER-GROWING BOND Owner of a pretty face and equally charming persona, Asha Madhuri, the Director of Sun International Institute, is a perfect life partner for Srikanth. She not only shares life with him but also stands by him as a strong pillar of support. Who made the first move? He is my sister’s friend and I first met him when I was in the 8th standard. I used to see him regularly after that. Soon I realised he was the one for me. I waited for one year, waiting for him to propose. But, it didn’t happen. Finally, I didn’t want to take a chance and proposed to him. Naturally, it was a yes. In 1998 when I was just 18 we got married. red | july 2014 | 102

How are you as colleague? There are no ego hassles between us. He gives me total freedom and doesn’t dominate. Had he done that, I could not have worked as I get confused when someone tries to control me. I share my ideas with him and he gives his inputs and a brilliant concept emerges of this exercise. He trusts me with a lot of responsibilities. This gives me immense confidence and makes me feel involved. What is your ultimate dream for your group? I want to see Sun as the Sun International Institute. University in another five years. We have started the groundwork.

Mr.G.V.Harsha Kumar, the former MP and his son Mr. G.V.Sri Raj - these were the much in circulation names in the region in recent times. While Harsha Kumar was one of the first to voice dissent against bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh in Parliament, Sri Raj, who had made his political debut in the recent elections, consolidated support for the movement at the grassroots. They talk of their tryst with politics in an exclusive interview with red, held at their farmhouse. With inputs from P. Swarnalatha

Hailing from a humble family, entering politics was certainly not the childhood ambition for Harsha Kumar. However, the he had taken to politics like fish to water at a very young age. After nearly three decades of association with the Congress and serving as MP for two terms, he was compelled to distance himself from the party over the state bifurcation issue. After hectic political activities, the former MP is taking a break and breather, which he utilises to focus on his family and business. Mr. Harsha Kumar, who will soon bounce back to active politics with rejuvenated spirit, speaks of his life and mission.

EXCERPTS What made you get into politics? I was born and brought up in Rajahmundry in a family which had no political background. My father Rajkumar worked as a co-operative inspector and mother Virginia was a housewife. But I was into a lot of student activities , once I reached college. When I was in the 2nd year and working as the president of National Students Union, I sensed my inclination towards the Congress. During my Masters studies, I led an agitation against the TDP government over the scholarship issue. I was even sent to Vizag jail for 17 days. Recognising my contribution to public life, the Congress Party gave me the ticket in 1985. Why Congress? I always admired the late Mrs.Indira Gandhi and you may not believe this, but I wanted to join the party just to get a glimpse of her. You moved a no-confidence motion in Parliament against your own party. Tell us about it. I agree whatever I am today it is because of the party and the confidence it had reposed in me. At the same time, I also understand the position of Samaikhyandhra supporters. That brought me to a juncture where I had to choose between my party and my people. I chose the latter and moved the no confidence motion. I was expelled from the party. Later they did call me back but I spurned the overture. I joined Kiran Kumar Reddy’s party because I felt that he genuinely fought for Samaikhyandhra.

range of courses. But setting up institutions was not an easy task. Later, the then CM, Janardhana Reddy, opened doors for private institutions. I could set up my first college for computer sciences which later grew into a group of institutions, offering a number of courses including fashion technology. ON THE SON RISE Your son also joined politics. Do you believe in dynasty politics? Normally, every son wishes to join his father’s profession. When I was young, I too wanted to become a government employee following my father’s footsteps, but landed here due to various circumstances. Seeing me dabbling in politics, Sri Raj cultivated an interest in it. He set out with a motive to serve people and I supported him. When I started, people from different walks of life had got into politics. But these days, dynasty politics is quite active and public also encourages it. I feel that an

individual should enter politics only if he or she has an aptitude for it and not just to toe the parent’s line. What are the changes you saw in politics over the years? Change is a part and parcel of life. Politician should instantly respond to the needs of the public, should be accessible to render help and should be socially aware. The present generation, product of corporate education, lacks social awareness. Dedication and selflessness are must for the politicians whatever generation they belong too. What is advice to your son? He has his own ideologies and has a long way to go. He should hone his skills and understand the problems of people belonging to all sections of society. One should also thoroughly know the law of the land. So, I advise him to gain in-depth knowledge on all these issues if he wants to become a good politician.

What is the trait that brings you close to people at grassroots and also higher ups like Kiran Kumar? That is because I did not emerge a leader overnight and I worked my way up, climbing step by step through hard work and commitment. Hence I can mingle with people of any level. What is your further course of action? Now is the time to stay calm and silent because people have not chosen us and the party with which I grew disowned me. The present governments came with many promises and people pin hopes on them. If they fail to deliver the goods, they will face the wrath of the public. However, I wish them all the best and am ready to support anyone who strives for people’s welfare. Does being in politics affect one’s family life? Yes, of course. The family life certainly takes a backseat for this field is highly demanding in terms of both time and efforts. During my tenure as an MP, I spent nearly 100-150 days in the train itself as I was expected to be at the beck and call of the party and people. Thankfully, my wife Sarala has been very supportive and manages my family beautifully. What made you start the educational institutions? In my growing years, I saw that Rajahmundry had only three degree colleges which were the government-run and none that offered courses in subjects like computers. I always wished that there were institutes offering wider

“I had to choose between my party and my people. I chose the people.”

IN FATHER’S FOOTSTEPS

L

ife has to be on a gigantic scale for Mr.G.V.Sri Raj. Whether it was the 20,000-strong youth rally that came to receive him when he returned from the UK after completing studies in London School of Economics and Political Science or the political event Simhagarjana he organised that had a 8.5 lakh throng or his wedding which saw a whopping 2.5 lakh guests – everything concerning him has to be of enormous and larger-than-life proportions. This compulsive crowd-puller inherits a rich political legacy from his father, but his interests go beyond the allconsuming political field. A devoted educationist, enthusiastic cricketer, an avid traveller and thorough fashion and fitness freak, Sri Raj talks of his activities. EXCERPTS

Politicians in India are not corrupt. Only problem is many of them are not well educated.

What made you choose politics? It was a natural choice as I grew up in a political environment. However, one incident really spurred me to choose this field. Once, my father who was the victim of a terrible violence and an ailing police officer were admitted to the same hospital. While thousands thronged the hospital to meet my father, just a handful of people called on the officer. The stark contrast made me realise the magnitude of the clout a good politician could have. A little about your childhood I was quite a brat in the school and my teachers almost gave me up as an incorrigible kid. It is heartening to think that the same teachers felicitated me after I returned from LSE. What is your progress card? I set up Youth Unite for Voluntary Affairs (YUVA) to carry out welfare activities like blood camps. Though I joined NSUI, leading a huge group, I never held any positions in it. The people whom I supported always won with impressive majorities. I have released an anti-corruption poster, conducted a seminar on Khadi and distributed Khadi to the student leaders. My representation to the IT Minister to provide Optical Fiber to the registered Press Clubs, was forwarded to USFO. I have conducted a National Seminar in Rajahmundry in favour of Foreign Direct Investments and the very first youth festival of Adikavi Nannayya University in East Godavari. Dalit Sankaravam, I organised was a thumping success.

“Youth must enter politics at the college level itself.”

Shoot By Dhana Vijay

You are a youth leader. What are the issues the youth faces today? The present day youth don’t have any issues at all. Especially the youth in the Andhra Pradesh are blessed. Education is free. The government offers a number of incentives and sops which they can easily avail. I note that there are a lot of engineers going jobless. The ministry of corporate affairs should look into this problem. They should give a chance to youngsters and encourage those who form into groups and evince interest in floating their own enterprises. Adequate funds should be released to establish and develop new companies. This not only boosts the economy of the region, but also generates employment, brining a lot of change in style in the present system {sic}. What are the areas to be improved? It is not about one part needs to be improved. Any part of the system that goes wrong should be set right on priority basis. I refuse to remain a mute spectator to such disorder. Nor do I give up if I fail in my attempts. I shall persist till I succeed. Do you believe in loyalty to a particular party or to your principles? Being loyal to a particular party or principles doesn’t make any sense anymore. Yes, we were very loyal to the Congress. But still they had expelled my father for raising his voice against the state bifurcation. Yet, we did stick to our principles and contested from the Jai Samaikhyandhra Party. All those millions of people, who shouted hoarse to keep the state united, eventually left the agitation, forgetting their principles. Hence I feel that the leader should go according the changing equations in politics, without being a stickler for a particular party or a set of principles. What kind of politicians do we need? I wish more and more educated and qualified people entered politics. A person with a degree of political science is suited to take the lead in governance. It is time we selected leaders from institutions like Delhi School of Economics, IIMs and IAMs or sent our elected candidates to these institutions for training.

How did you develop the leadership qualities? My endeavours in politics and my commitment towards issues shaped me the way I am today. Do you feel politics entering academic campuses is desirable? Of course, yes, I firmly believe in catching them young. Youth must enter politics at the college level itself. In fact, it should be serious and committed politics. However, I give a call to all young politicians “please give some free time to your girlfriends and family.” Did you ever feel lost in politics? After I returned from UK, first thing that hit me hard is the way people in our state have been slogging under oppressive heat during summers when the mercury touches 50 degree Celsius. Finding a plausible solution to this, I suggested and appealed repeatedly to the then chief minister, Mr.Kiran Kumar Reddy, to declare those days that record high temperatures as holidays. However, to my dismay my advice went unheeded and that was the one occasion I felt really let down. What is your opinion on Gandhis? Ever since I entered active politics in 2004 I have been seeing the Congress Party facing various situations. My respect for Mrs. Sonia Gandhi has only gone up by several notches. She may be an Italian, but I feel she is the most responsible daughter-in-law of Mother India. She is the wife of the former Prime Minister who gifted her with colossal riches and Swiss Bank account, yet she is ready to forego all the comforts to serve our country. Moreover, even after losing her husband to violence, the courageous lady brought her son into politics. Does any foreigner do this? I feel proud that my father got an opportunity to work under a leader like that. How do you take your message to the masses? I contested from an area with 1.8 lakh voters, out of them 1.20 lakh are farmers. These are the people who don’t even read newspapers. Nor do they have cable connections. Honestly speaking there are also areas that lack power supply. So I cannot convey my message, sitting in front of the media camera. I had to

go to them, spend some time with them and talk to them. This is how I take my message to the public. I don’t believe in the Fourth Estate. How accurate are you in gauging the voters’ mood? No one expected such a sweeping ant-incumbency vote against the Cong. But I wonder how the elected governments will keep their promises and sustain till 2019. What are the things you would like to change in today’s politics? I am not that big a person to change things. But I can definitely observe, alert and apprise the senior leaders of the burning issues at the grassroots. A bit about your family My mother Sarala Kumari, who still works as a government employee in the Medical and Health Department, is a pillar of strength for us. My brother Sunder is the Director of Rajiv Gandhi Group of Educational Institutions. The two new additions to our family are my wife Anvitha and my brother’s wife Ankitha, Incidentally, Anvitha is from my father’s own constituency Razole. Tell us about your BIG Fat Wedding Both my brother and I got married at the same time. It is the biggest ever marriage performed in the history of AP. There were 2.5 lakh guests and more than 2 lakh people were treated to scrumptious non-vegetarian dinner. Rajahmundry roads were chock-a-block with VVIP vehicles. The guests included celebrities from various walks of life. Even the Vice- President of India came. It took 50 days to erect the mandap for the event.

ANVITHA, THE RIGHT CHOICE: SRI RAJ

Routine If I have to participate in a political meeting or an agitation the next day, I sleep by 10.00 pm and am up by 4.00 am. If there is no programme, I would party all night

Though Anvitha and I got married recently, she mingled with our family very unobtrusively as if she has been with us for years. Ours was a love marriage which earned the blessings of parents from both the sides. A B.Tech graduate and an artist, Anvitha has been extremely supportive in my political endeavours right from the day one. Though a new bride, she canvassed for both my father and me during the recent elections. In future if she evinces any interest in politics, I will be too happy and eager to encourage her.

Fitness-conscious I am fitness-conscious and exercise almost on daily basis at the gym at home Role Model My father Inspiration A book on B.R.Ambedkar changed my views about politics. Define a true leader Leader should understand the needs of his people and act accordingly. Beyond politics I have a horde of friends in film world like Siddhardh Malya, Raja and Krishnudu. God willing, I shall produce a multi-starrer.

HE WAS A PERSISTENT SUITOR: ANVITHA Like it normally happens, our story too began at a wedding we both attended. In fact it was not Sri, but his parents who spotted me first and complimented me on my looks, for which I simply said, “Thank you.” Later, I saw Sri playing pranks with all the girls at the venue. He fed them all with chillies-filled-pans. I was the only one who did not eat it while the rest of the girls were hopping around with tears in their eyes. That was when he came to me and said, “You are smart. Can I meet you on the facebook?” As I didn’t have a FB account, his overtures never reached me. A persistent Sri obtained my cell number and called me for which I responded only after a week. Thus our friendship grew and ended happily in the wedlock. I am happy to enter this closely-knit family and be a part of it.

nything that is concerned with muscles, ligaments and joints is considered orthopaedic. Disorders are ailments, injuries or diseases that cause knee problems, whiplash, dislocated shoulder, torn cartilages, foot pain and fibromyalgia. There are as many treatments for orthopaedic disorders as there are problems and there are many conditions that require clinical care.

Inevitable not Incurable Most Common Orthopaedic Problems Disorders and conditions are common and we may probably experience them at some point in our lives.  Arthritis is a rheumatic disease that has

symptoms of pain, limited movement, swelling and pain in connective tissues. It is chronic or rarely changes and can progress slowly. The causes of arthritis are unknown.  Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint

disease that middle aged and older adults experience. The joint cartilage breaks down and it can occur in the hands, knees, spine or hips. It is quite common and very painful.  Rheumatoid arthritis is a disease that

causes severe inflammation of the joints, limiting the functioning of the extremities. Lumps generally form over the small joints and movement is hampered. Adult rheumatoid arthritis lasts a lifetime. Rheumatoid arthritis occurs when the body’s immune system attacks its own healthy tissues and cells. If not watched, the disease can also attack the heart and lungs.  Fractures are definite orthopaedic

problems. Open fractures or compound fractures include bone protruding through the skin or a wound that exposes the bone through the skin.  Lower back pain is a condition that

affects one out of ten people. The pain

exists from mild and annoying to persistent and severe. Mobility is restricted and normal functioning is disturbed. It can be caused by overuse and strenuous activities, improper use and exposure to continual vibrations. Do you know that smoking is also a cause of lower back pain? ealthy food makes your brain sharp and makes you stand tall and strong, whereas junk food increases the waistline, making you prone to diseases. You are what you eat. So feed yourself the right way. Food is classified into two categories – 1. Junk food, an unhealthy food, containing high fat and sugar, with poor nutritional value 2. Healthy food with nutritional value. The former has preservatives, chemicals, artificial colours and flavours that are absent in the latter. Both the varieties cost the same and take the same time to prepare. Why do we prefer junk to healthy food? Tasty: Junk food is tastier than healthy food. Temptation: A chocolate is more tempting than an apple. Mood: When overtly stressed people crave for sweet junk food. Though it supplies energy and loads of calories, junk food does not provide the vital nutrients. On the contrary, healthy foods like vegetables, whole grains and fresh fruits are rich sources of myriad nutrients. When it comes to essential fats, healthy food again scores better. Junk food is loaded with unhealthy fats which cause obesity and associated ailments.

NK U J VS BENEFITS OF HEALTHY FOOD

Concentration A nutrient-rich diet helps boost the concentration power. Junk foods lead to poor concentration and the accumulation of fats in the inner wall of arteries causes fall in the blood circulation, making people drowsy. Deceptive Energy High-fibre foods release energy steadily, whereas high-sugary foods give a shortburst of energy. Good proteins like nuts and lean meat can boost the brain function. Stamina and Strength Daily consumption of junk food results in deficiency of energy. Whereas healthy food helps you build stamina and strength. Cholesterol Junk food contains much higher level of cholesterol which affects the inner walls of arteries, heart and liver. Get diet full of fibre to alleviate blood cholesterol. Aim for 25 gm of berries a day as people who eat more berries (particularly strawberries and blueberries) cut the risk of heart attack by around 30%. People, who eat healthy food items, fall sick less often.

Fruits and vegetables or whole wheat chapattis and bread are high in fibre content which releases energy slowly and keeps the stomach full for a longer time, besides keeping the gastro-intestinal tract healthy. The proteins that you derive from lean meat and nuts improve brain functions. Have vegetables either steamed or stir-fried. They hold all the nutrients intact. Healthy food is not processed; hence they are low in calories and lose no essential nutritional values. Eating multi-grain breads, sprouts, low fat dairy items (like skimmed milk, homemade paneer or curd) and fruits gives you a good amount of nutrition. Healthy foods control the body weight. If you are overweight or obese, consult a doctor at the earliest and follow a high fibre low calorie diet.

VEERU THE VIZAG BRAND BUILDER

C

elebrities often excel in the professions that come with readymade platforms. But here is a man who has elevated the not-so-popular vocation itself to enormous heights, carrying it with his sheer gift of gab and excellent extempore oratory. Six years is too small a period for a young man to amass fame the way he did. That is what V.S.Veerendra Babu, just Veeru Mama for his innumerable fans, has accomplished. No matter how rich a person is or how many followers he may have, it is ultimately the image that connects him to the public, especially in the showbiz. It is all the more true with the much-in-vogue event management and the managers. Little wonder Veeru and his V-Team stand out as shining examples and the most sought after in the plethora of choices the

state now has to offer. Displaying a natural flair for repartee, Veeru talks of the birth of his V-Team and the number of milestones he has crossed in an informal chat with red . EXCERPTS GENESIS OF V-TEAM It was the dismal performance of the vendors who used to conduct the events and the way they used to take the customers for a ride that spurred the then very successful RJ, Veeru, into action and made him establish V-Team in Aug 2008 in Vizag.

THE GROWTH Though he started the venture in a casual manner, Veeru has got automatically sucked into a whirlpool of activities and left his job with Big FM. Taking his role as the CEO seriously, he started working in real earnest. V- Team started growing from strength to strength, adding an impressive array of services. Its progress record speaks for its credibility and competency and till now it has successfully organised a whopping 600 events and 300 weddings. This year it is going to celebrate its the sixth anniversary. USP His name itself sells because of the tremendous popularity he has earned. It is no exaggeration to say that Veeru Mama is a household name in the region. The uniqueness of his service in his own words, “I not only manage the event from the word go but also double as Master of Ceremonies, wielding the mike on the stage. I am the only one in the state to conceptualize and execute the audio-visual props, whatever may be the kind of event I manage. Moreover, I write, compose and sing the songs that go with my events. Marking the upcoming anniversary of V-Team, I am paying a lyrical tribute to the City of Destiny.” When it comes to deciding the themes, Veeru gives a total free hand to his clients and translates their dreams into reality. NOT JUST FOR THE ELITE Dispelling the popular belief that the event management is only for the creamy lot, Veeru is reachable for everyone at affordable cost. GANTA, BABU PAT VEERU Citing the meet of Narendra Modi held in

Vizag and the Sangeet ceremony of Ganta Srinivas Rao’s daughter’s wedding as the best feathers in his cap, Veeru says the compliments he received from Mr. Chandrababu Naidu and Ganta are worth treasuring forever. V- DEALS •
