They help you set realistic goals that you can achieve - if you put in the right effort, of course. They can also keep you on track and motivate you further. here is certain energy in visiting a brew house that makes the experience different from guzzling it elsewhere. It could be the unmistakable aroma of the brewing process, the gleaming steel tanks or the opportunity to drink with other beer nerds. And not to forget, those extra tomatoes, bell peppers, olives, mustard and sweet onion sauce! Well sub-lovers can now rejoice as Subway is now open besides ICICI Bank, MVP Double Road. Sprawled over 1,000 sq.ft., this outlet has a 20-cover space. Franchise owner Madhu Varma says, “Apart from yummy sandwiches, we have finger-licking salads, cookies, desserts, and beverages. The best part is that you can pick out of five breads for your sub and load it with veggies and pickles of your choice. Yep, a submarine sandwich customised just for you. You must even be familiar of our ‘Sub Of The Day’ offer, where each

He adds, “Vegetarians mostly opt for Veggie Patty and Panner Tikka while the meat lovers prefer Chicken Tikka and Chicken Tandoori. For health buffs, we recommend our fat-free salads with lettuce and olives or skip mayonnaise and south west sauce in the subs. Here, the chicken is cooked on tandoor rather than deep fried- zero oil content. Nutritious yet yummy! Besides, we serve thickshakes, sundaes, mocktails and scoops of Dinshaw’s brand. There is a Georgia vending machine too if you want to enjoy your subs with a hot piping cup of coffee. We have two special offers as well– Two Thickshakes for Rs.150 and Buy 2 Scoops and Get One Scoop Free.” There is a 300 sq.ft. space where one can organise birthday parties, anniversaries, etc. for nearly 30 people, and that too for no extra charges. Double treat folks! Future plans, “Expansion plans are in the pipeline. But, as of now, I want to start home delivery services soon.” Oh boy, we can’t wait!

The eligible bachelor, seeking a marriage alliance, was politely shown the door. That, the girl became a world famous Bharatanatyam exponent, is another story. This happened 60 years ago, proving that women of substance have been asserting their rights then, now and always. So, reminding them of their rights and pitying their plight or even stating that they are not on par with their male counterparts sound rather bizarre.

hey refuse to be branded as entrepreneurs. “Our endeavour is humble and our intent simple. Having nothing to do with feminism in that stark defiant sense of the word, we want to empower women at least a few of them, making them self-reliant,” say Padmaja and Vyjayanthi in unison. Despite their efforts to make no brouhaha about the venture, the boutique has become a brand to reckon with and earned critical acclaims. Well, that can be easily attributed to their meticulous selection and unique collection. Daughters-in-law of an affluent and flourishing business family, they set out on their own path. After mulling over many options, they zeroed in on the merchandise closest to woman’s heart-clothing and opened Aarna which in no time earned a huge bank of loyal customers. Accomplishments P: A lovely bond with customers who are more of friends now. My dream to start an industry to provide employment to only women is yet to be realised. Failures P: Failures are an inevitable part of journey and they are the stepping stones to progress. Customer ties P: It is important to think like a customer. We are open to all kinds of feedback. V: We let our customers trot around in leisure, giving them ample time to decide. We don’t pressurise or goad them to pick this or that. Work-life balance P: My children are busy with their own career and I have Vyjayanthi, a great partner, to share the responsibilities. Hence no issues. Gender bias P: Never did I face that though I admit that it is rampant in our society. I believe that if women take the wheel, we will be a developed nation. V: Neither did I. I want to state something interesting here. Women from the South are held in high esteem in North India. We are known for our professionalism. Women entrepreneurs a minority, comment. P: Though statistics have proved that we are way more successful in business as compared to men, there is a notion that men are born to do business and a women’s place is at home. Women lack encouragement and exposure. V: Whether they take them up voluntarily or thrust on them, often family responsibilities hold them back.

is the portrait that catches your eye on entering her chamber. Roopa Jasti, the owner, with an impish twinkle in her eyes, asks you to interpret it. Her favourite sport appears to be finding out how each onlooker deciphers the symbol. While you try to grasp the theme, she reveals, “My concept, which is beautifully depicted by the artist, is all about my father’s hand-holding me and how I grew up to be an independent woman, that I am today.” Thus she celebrates her yesterday, idolising her father. More interestingly, she secures tomorrow of her offspring, floating Kartsin. This online grocery store is a platform intended to launch her daughter Sri Brahmini. Don’t ask ‘when?’ because the child is just one-year-old. Meet this very futuristic and far-sighted Roopa, whose present is what we are talking about.

SHE KARTS IN NEW VERVE Journey I was born and brought up in the City of Pearls, where my father was into public services, and got married to Mr.Manoj Kumar, a builder, and moved to the City of Destiny in 2013. Passion Driven by sheer passion to be an entrepreneur, I am running two firms Verve which is into technical trainings and recruitments and Kartsin.com, an online, whatsapp grocery store. The latter is an asset I want to give my daughter. For the time being, my biggest challenge lies in running these two divergent firms. redmagazine.in | 62

Workforce My workforce is my real strength and I gratefully acknowledge their role and contribution. Identifying the talents of employees and their areas of interest helps business. I urge my staff to find out lacunae, if any and invite them to come out with solutions. I look for people with self discipline, ambition, multi-tasking skills and who are eager to learn and grow. Advantage & successful tasks Our competitive advantage is our service and prices. Both the ventures are my accomplishments. Training and placing right people in the right

spots are an achievement. I feel the recognition as an IWCF (UK) Trainer and MOM consultant for Singapore is a very significant reward. Customer ties I believe in accepting the customer’s point of view and feedback and that is how I expand my mental horizons. Finally, she decided to have her own venture and run it on her own steam and terms to prove her prowess. She runs her trade on two simple principles -intelligent planning and diligent execution. If the incessant phone calls she receives as the interview progresses is an indication, we discern how demanding her profession is and how dexterously she is handling it. Journey I come from a business family of Dhanbad, dealing in liquor. My mother Mrs.Pushpa Saha had to step into this exclusively male domain as my father passed away at a very young age and when I was barely two years old. It was a daunting task for a mother of four girls to run a business of this kind, but she came through unscathed. Walking in her footsteps, we learnt to be independent and self-reliant at an early age. I earned a B.A. degree before getting married to Mr.Manish redmagazine.in | 68

Living in a joint family allowed me enough space and time to pursue my interest. I used to hold exhibitions in Delhi, twice a year along with my friends who were located in Lucknow, Banaras and Kolkata. Designing the clothes fell to my lot while they would pick up the material.

Vizag calling We decided to shift here as we came to know that this city offered better educational opportunities for my sonsManan and Arnav. Realising my love for fashion designing, my husband gave me a surprise gift- a shop in the VUDA Complex. Thus Sanskriti came into existence. While scouting for a more spacious venue to hold my growing business, I opened the second branch on the Sampath Vinayak road in Nov 2017.

the Andhra cuisine, crafting it carefully and serving it with much aplomb. He exudes a blazing passion for the path he chose and his carpe-diem outlook reflects in his constantly evolving recipes. “I am a pakka local when I wield the ladle, but I am open to new concepts and ready to throw in a good measure of global ingredients and techniques to dish out never-tasted-before experiences for my guests.” Chef Rupesh (as he is fondly called) is now at the forefront of a campaign titled Andhra Amma Vantalu, which is floated in collaboration with AP Tourism. This is Agatamudi Rupeswara Rao

being done with an objective to tweak the local cuisine (which is fading into oblivion) and make it popular. The rave reviews of his culinary skills show that the guests of the hotel are given an elevated dining experience. His creativity, international experience and knowledge of the local market are widely applauded.

Water chestnuts are made from the roots, marinated in Guntur Karam and tossed with onion, green chilli, curry leaves and lemon juice. One whiff and you are left drooling for more!

Guntur Mirchi Halwa with Rabdi Cake This sweet is sure to delight even the pickiest of dessert-eaters! A few ingredients but great avour! It melts in your mouth giving you endless fits of sugary and tangy pleasure. Here is the twist- relish it with banana cake, topped with rabdi and caramalised cornakes. Simply divine!

RUPESH AND HIS REACH From a boy hailing from an agri family of Srikakulam, to the applauded Chef of a star hotel, it was a triumphant march, with accompanying turbulence. Drought & debts drove Rupesh to the city of opportunities- Hyderabad. Ironically, his hunger-induced journey took him to the hospitality industry which satiates innumerable palates and stomachs.

Starting his career as a hall boy at a small restaurant, the lad studied diploma in hotel management from Indian Institute of Hotel Management (Setwin). He put his best foot forward as a Guest Service Associate at Taj Krishna. He, later, took over as a Team Leader at Intercontinental Mumbai. His coveted opportunity came as a posting in Muscat, where he worked

at Al Yazdi Catering LLC. Later, he joined cruise ship Royal Caribbean & earned an arsenal of skills. He came home to be the Chef De Partie at Novotel Hyderabad and later, the Executive Sous Chef at Novotel Visakhapatnam Varun Beach. He spearheaded many culinary operations like introducing Teppanyaki cuisine to Vizag, at The Bheemili Resort.

Even as we mark Women’s Day this year, we had to record a sad reality. Out of all states, Telangana has the lowest number of women cops on its rolls. A report says that 2.47% of its sanctioned strength of 60,700 personnel are women while crimes against women increased by 18% last year. On the other hand, the state has been wooing investors from home and abroad. These financers will bring in several women employees who, at the least, expect safe environs. We hope, realising its onus of providing security to women - locals or otherwise, the state would do the needful.

one are the days when children would play under the tree or cycle along with siblings. We are in an era of technology that keeps the young and old occupied. No wonder, kids these days are denied healthy growth. But as they say, every dark cloud has a silver lining. Sims and Sam's comes to the rescue of parents who want their children's evening be spent in a healthy and productive way. Located in Kompally, this place is spread over 18,000 sq.ft. with indoor & outdoor playing options. The proud mother of two girls, Neha Ahuja was concerned over the plight of the children being so dependent on gadgets. After a successful stint as a teacher in Oakridge school, Japan, Neha wanted to have a place, where children stay children. She is driven by a passion to bring up a generation which is physically fit with healthier and

stronger bodies to meet the challenges of life. This laid the foundation of Sim and Sam's that is completely gadget, wifi & techfree zone. The closed environment is divided to accommodate a reading and writing space, brick assembling, water trampoline/bed and more. Despite the absence of ACs, the indoor zone balances temperature to a maximum of 27 degrees. The outdoor space, on the other hand, is the zone where children can indulge in activities like dance, karate, cycling and more.

from the library, have coffee and a snack from their coffee shop. Walk into Sim and Sams during the evening hours or weekends and you can see the place is filled with children playing to their heart’s content. In addition, to the existing games, the team keeps holding workshops on dance, origami, book reading, etc. This is done with an objective to help the children absorb knowledge wrapped in play. Within a year, the place has become quite popular. They wish to develop it into a leading brand of kids health and wellness, and venture into tier two cities across the country, offering a healthy growing environment for children.

The place promises impeccable hygiene as the housekeeping staff cleans it every 2 hours to ensure that children can play with no threat of developing infection or allergy. The team is cordial, caring and ensures the safety of children. Parents can, therefore, either leave their children here and go or sit back and pick up a book

V Prasad is not just a name but a brand

and is known for pioneering

innumerable concepts and projects.

From eye care to multiplex, Prasads, the country’s most popular family entertainment centre, believes in innovation. Taking the legacy further, Prasads launched Area 51, a sci-fi themed enthralling VR gaming zone, much to the delight of Hyderabadis. We talk with Abhishek Prasad, Director, Prasads, the man behind the concept.

The eureka moment I am a gaming enthusiast. After I obtained a degree in Mechanical Engineering, I worked in the Robotics and Automation industry for two years. During this stint, I learnt how technology can be put to better use. Later, I returned to the family business in Chennai. However, my grandfather Mr.Ramesh Prasad, urged me to help him out with his projects running in Hyderabad. That is when I thought of redmagazine.in | 24

creating something to re-brand the existing Prasads. VR gaming has gained popularity abroad and was trying to make forays into the Indian markets too. But nothing much was happening on this front as it is an expensive and complicated concept. Since we are one of the biggest VFX companies and an established filmmaking firm, I knew that we had the strength and skill to bring it here. All we needed was to conceptualise it & come up with a meticulous plan. This led to the ideation of Area 51. We launched it in March 2017. Ifs and Buts Initially, my grandfather was skeptical about the whole idea because VR is an alien subject for him. In fact, that has been his wont. Earlier too, when we were adopting ATMOS sound in Prasads, he came up with similar objections, stating that 360 degrees sound could be quite a distraction for the audience.

Well, that is how people of his generation or conservatives react. However, his trust in my ability overcame his skepticism. I did enjoy the complete support of my father, Mr.Sai Prasad, who understood what I was doing. Venue Once the decision was made, we started scouting for a suitable location. After much mulling over the issue, we zeroed in on our own premises, where the previous gaming zone was running.

The churro dishes are my recipe and creation whereas the food and other bakes are taken care of by our chef. He keeps coming up with new combinations and the ones that have good response make it to our menu, and in case they are rejected, they are pulled out immediately to ensure that there is no wastage of food. So, our menu is very dynamic. What is your USP? Our customer service. I feel that taste definitely matters but

sustaining the clientele is a must. My team is extremely cordial and friendly, and ensures that every client leaves with a smile and all eager to come back. The best 3 reviews you got. To be frank, we finalised on this place thinking that we would take time to establish ourselves and people would just drop in, pick their choice and leave. But we have come to a stage where people are lining up on weekends and we are selling a churro every 10 seconds, giving us a surreal feeling. This would not have been possible without the love of our customers. They have given us rave reviews by coming to us time and again.

What more is in store? We are thinking of moving to another venue because this place is small and can accommodate only 20 people at a time. Also, it doesn't have a kitchen for which we have taken a place in the same building on the 4th floor. As I said over weekends, there are people standing. So, we need to move to a bigger place. Moreover, we don’t have a washroom here. Initially, we didn't think of all these things. But now as we plan to focus on building a brand, we want to have a place that has all the facilities.

It is hard to list just three! Although our basics like brownies, cupcakes and cookies are all-time favourites, we have a lot more to offer.

The Matter of Batter

Nothing matters when it comes to

T

he shimmery white walls complemented with dark interiors and catch your eyes the moment you walk into this beautiful place. It smells every bit of the yummy

desserts and cakes it offers. The impeccably clean and well-maintained environment is a big turn on. In conversation with Ria, the mind and hands behind The Matter of Batter.

What does the place promise to deliver? A brief about you and how it all started. I started as a home baker, curious and enthusiastic. My love to feed everyone, serve good food and be a good host gave me the biggest push to get better and better. Soon I drowned so deep in the subject (baking) that it became a study for me more than just a hobby. And I couldn’t imagine a future in anything else. So, learning this art was like discovering myself i.e. discovering my hidden passion towards baking. A few details about setting up the place, choice of interiors/theme and name. White was my base colour, I wanted a blank canvas to fill with colour. I started with keeping all the fixtures white and used light pastel shades for decor, so my products stand out more than anything. Coming to the name, the credit goes to my father. He literally forced me to name it The Matter of Batter even though I despised it in the beginning. Once the logo came out I fell in love with the name. redmagazine.in | 44

All my desserts and cakes are made with a lot of love, compassion and care. By serving my customers a piece of any dessert, I want to assure them that they are having something that is made from the deepest pits of my heart. It is special, unique, and something that makes me gush with happiness. That is the feeling I always want to share while they sit in a cosy place,

that’s comfortable and that reminds them

of the comfort of their homes, full of positive energy. Therefore, if you see I have kept the place minimalistic, spacious and simple so that even if families come along with children, they can sit back, relax and savour their choice. A few details about designing the menu.

Tiramisu Pastry

The menu keeps changing as we keep adding new desserts and savouries. There is always something new to eat almost every day. So we use Instagram to update our menu for the special of the day or week. We have a very simple and uncomplicated menu. Here people can come and order

dishes of their choice. Your USP Our working style and our team are our USP. The team nurtures the same passion like me which reflects in their service. The best three reviews that you have ever received. • From a four-year-old, who said, “You have the best cupcakes ever.” A child’s comment can never be biased. If you can satisfy kids these days, I think you can rule the world! • My regular customers who keep coming back for our desserts. I think if someone has something & comes back for more, that is the best review you can get. • Lastly, from my dad who, on his 60th birthday, after umpteen attempts at trying to make his favourite walnut cake, for the first time in 6 years, ever since I started baking, said, “You nailed it.” It was like winning the biggest award.

Double Chocolate Pastry

Your definition of a dessert and personal favourite. Something that makes life worth living. Personal favourite everything on my menu has been my favourite. It would not be on there otherwise. It is like you are asking me to choose between an arm and leg. My desserts are my children. What is in store? As I said, we keep innovating and coming up with new ideas almost every day. However, for now, my focus is on Keto desserts and tutorials on baking techniques. I want my place to nurture more talent or passionate bakers. Considering my journey, you never know who is dreaming of baking.

It was only when I started to bake for my friends and family members during college that I realised that I could take it up as a profession. With limited skills, small home baking equipment and my mother being my only help, I started my journey as a baker redmagazine.in | 48

Tell us about the place, name, and interiors/theme. After 3 years of home baking, honing my skills, watching a zillion videos, taking up online classes, fulfilling customers' demands and updating myself with the latest confections, I realised the need to expand. I understood that it was time to have a bigger kitchen with staff helping me. That was when my passion got the essentials of becoming a working model.

I was not very confident about investing a lot on a main street patisserie because I knew this was more of a learning experience for me as I didn’t have any formal education.

To survive in the industry... Hone your talent; never feel that you know it all because you never know it all; believe in yourself and don’t be arrogant.

Sacrifices behind glamour There is no time to be with family. This is why my family had to shift to Hyderabad. They sacrificed their comfort and adjusted to new life.
