2019 SEASON RECORD

ACROSS MY DESK

McDonald’s Ballarat FNL Operations Manager Shane Anwyl

The league firstly congratulate all the senior and junior football and netball clubs that had the ultimate success in 2018 and were presented with their premiership flags and trophies at the recent Season Launch held at Saxon House. The Western Bulldogs Under 9’s kicked off last Friday at City Oval on a mild night perfect for football. This event has the support of our partners at the Western Bulldogs who are really getting behind the Ballarat community with their support of junior football and netball across the region. With the first AFL game of the season coming up on Saturday May 11th, a perfect opportunity to buy a Ballarat supporters membership. See their website for details. On the subject of websites, the league is pleased to launch a new and refreshed website and address for all your BFNL news and results. Head along to bfnl. com.au where you can access live scores, results and the latest news in football and netball. A further addition is the BFNL Team App – you can the results and live scores on your phone while at the football. Download the Team App from the relevant app store and search for Ballarat Football Netball League. Of course, social media is always updated to make sure our supporters and members know the latest across the league.

By now most would have come across the news that the Central Highland FNL have withdrawn from co-hosting the interleague game as part of the Worksafe Community Championships in May. This has provided a fantastic opportunity for the league to put on a terrific event without compromises to showcase the best football and netball in our league and the region. More details to come and will be available via the website. On a final note, thank you to all the hard working volunteers who have been working through the (so called) off season to make sure everything is in place for not only round 1 today, but the year ahead. Without these dedicated volunteers, you, the players and supporters would not have the great game we have today in football and netball and is a credit to each and every volunteer. Good luck to all teams today and the year ahead in the 2019 McDonald’s Ballarat FNL.

2019 SEASON RECORD

WORKSAFE AFL VICTORIA COUNTRY WELCOME TO SEASON 2019 With the new season fast approaching, excitement is mounting across country Victoria for the return of community football. Whether you are a player, coach, umpire, volunteer or spectator, the beginning of a new season brings with it a feeling of happiness, excitement and anticipation for what lies ahead. Season 2018 saw record participation for football in Victoria. More Victorians are playing Australian Football than ever before, with new participation rates revealing a rise across all key segments. There was a total of 474,633 participants that picked up the football last season in Victoria, an increase of 2.8 per cent from the previous year. Female football continued to grow with 127,115 women and girls playing the game and community football increased by 4 per cent in club participation reaching 170,000 participants for the first time.

Country football’s contribution to the national game was reinforced last year with 25 male and 11 female players from Victorian regional under 18 teams drafted to AFL and AFLW clubs. It is an exciting new era this year with the launch of the NAB League, and a big congratulations to all the boys and girls selected in squads for the six regional teams this season. This achievement is a credit to both the talent pathway programs and the local community clubs which continue to provide the foundation for the next generation of stars to reach the elite level. In addition, Victoria held seven JLT games in suburban and rural areas of the state which was made possible with the ongoing support of facility upgrades. AFL Victoria is working closely with the AFL, local leagues, and all levels of government to improve our sport’s community facilities.

Children, inclusion and diversity programs also saw an increase in participation, as well as coaching and umpiring with thousands of accredited coaches and umpires taking to the field.

I would like to wish all players, coaches, umpires, volunteers and administrators the best of luck for the upcoming season. I hope it is a successful and enjoyable one for all those involved.

The rapid growth of female football continues to reach new heights with the addition of 250 new female teams joining the competition in 2018, which now sees a total of almost 1,000 dedicated female club teams across Victoria.

Stephen O’Donohue

AFL Victoria Country Football & Development Manager

With continuous growth in football participation across all areas, we look forward to seeing more people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds get involved in the game this year.

with Jake ‘The insider’ Bridges and East Point coach Jake Bridges. Reigning Premiers East Point will carry ‘the hunted’ tag this season as they embark on one of the tougher assignments in footy - back to back flags. Insider: Firstly Jake, congratulations on your 2018 flag success as coach, how did that compare to your premiership winning days as a player? Bridges: I found as coach the feeling was more hollistic than that as a player. I was able to appreciate what it meant to so many people involved. As a player, it was little more personal. Insider: How do you go about grounding the players and narrowing the focus for 2019? Bridges: Perspective. We’ve added six or seven to the playing group over the pre season - competition for spots will be healthy. Insider: Which areas from last year have you identified room for the greatest improvement? Bridges: Tactics and opposition analysis especially, have been addressed. Insider: How has the pre season unfolded? Bridges: We’re in a good place at the moment with a healthy list and we’ve been able to retain all of last years Grand Final side which is a bonus. Insider: Of the new additions, who are the players to look out for? Bridges: Joel Maher (Bungaree, ex Perth), Midfielder, reigning Central Highlands League medalist. Billy Jones (Grovedale, ex Roosters), Midield,Half back - consistent team role player. Jessie Baird (Clunes, ex Roosters), quick utility. Jacob Lynch (Military, former junior), Ruck. Beast who will assist veteran Paul Kodorenko. Insider: What is the situation with your VFL affiliated players from 2018 - do you expect to see more of them in East colors in 2019?

Bridges: Jordan Johnston will be full time with us. Joel Ottavi (Williamstown) has had a huge pre season, is super fit and giving himself every chance to play VFL. Jake McQueen (Essendon)is in a similar scenario. Insider: Winning back to back flags is never easy, what’s a pass mark for East Point in 2019? Bridges: Improvement across the board in all areas - dynamics, player relationships/enjoyment, maintaining culture etc. Insider: Team to beat this year? Bridges: Melton Insider: Likely improvers? Bridges: Sebastopol

BUMPER RD 1 FOOTBALL PREVIEW with ‘Scoop’

Footy’s back - and what a cracker of round one action we have to look forward to!

The standard of football in the BFNL looks set to spike following an injection of top end talent to all clubs over Summer. Scenarios loom as mouth watering conversation ahead of the opening bounce. Can East Point go back-to-back? How will Melton cope with expectation? Can Sunbury make it back to finals? Will Sebastopol live up to the hype? Can Melton South, Redan and Ballarat take a big scalp? How will Bacchus Marsh shape up after losing nine players? Can Darley and North Ballarat City bounce back from a season riddled with (firstly) injury and (secondly) finals heartbreak? And how will Lake Wendouree cope with arguably the toughest draw of any finalist last year? All will be revealed in time as the long awaited journey begins...

Reigning Premiers East Point will proudly unfurl their 2018 winning flag first up when they host Lake Wendouree. The Kangaroos will be eager to stake their claim early as the team to be beat again having retained virtually all of last years squad. It will be interesting to see what new comers Joel Maher, Billy Jones, Jessie Baird and Jacob Lynch can add to an already formidable list. The Lakers too, have added quality, none more so than former Henderson Medalist with Ballarat, Shane Hutchinson. It will be a tough assignment nonetheless for the visiting Lakers. I’m expecting East to get the job done, and will be tipping them until they give me a reason not to - 31 points.

Darley will host Sunbury in what is shaping as the match of the round. Sunbury, under new coach Travis Hodgson will have the Lions primed to upset the Devils at home and threaten their 8-0 winning streak at Darley Park. The Devils have signed the most recent player of any club off an AFL list, namely Nick Graham from Carlton - who knows what impact he will have. Brother Brian (suspended) will miss in what looks a classic battle between the midfield. Conn, Bramble, Magin and the Landt brothers pose as Darley’s biggest problem keeping its impressive home record in tact. The Devils are 15 wins from 18 at home under Scotland and i’m reluctant to tip against the trend. Darley by 20 points.

A month ago, Bacchus Marsh looked little or no hope on the road of upsetting North Ballarat City in round one given it’s well publicised player exit (coincidental). Fortunately for the Cobras they’ve managed to find a couple of potential gems (Jake DeWinter, Tom Brownbridge) that will join star trio Jake Owen, Daniel Burton and Aaron Willets for the clubs first assignment under new coach Peter Davey. North Ballarat City will be keen to put last years ‘straight sets’ finals exit behind them and return to the winners list. Despite a quieter time than most on the player movement front over Summer, City should consolidate at home under second year coach Shane Skontra. City to win by 16 points.

Another chapter will be told when classic rivals Melton South host Melton. The Panthers will be looking to make an impression on the old foe after it’s marquee signing of former Carlton player, Paul Bower. Coach Heath Pritchard has spoken volumes of Bowers contribution on the track and is expecting his boys to be more competitive this year. Melton coach Aaron Tymms has the task this year of delivering on expectation after the Bloods return to finals. Can’t wait to see what improvements new recruits Shaun Campbell and Dyson Stevens will have on the Bloods group. Melton to win by 35 points.

I’m looking forward to seeing a bolstered Sebastopol and Ballarat go head to head in this highly anticipated encounter at Marty Busch Reserve. The Burras have focussed their pre season on improving scoreboard pressure on the back of their strong defence last year. Former VFL Roosters and Geelong star Luke Kiel and five time Dunnstown Best and Fairest Sam Jenkins will ensure the delivery into the forward 50 will give them every opportunity to do so. Ballarat look the smokeys ahead of a challenging season and are expected to be labelled ‘danger game’ for more fancied rivals. By afternoons’ end we’ll know more of both sides measured improvement. Sebastopol to win by 20 points Redan can look on with interest having the bye, enjoy your footy!

2019 SEASON RECORD

ROUND 1 NETBALL PREVIEW by Kim Bailey

Ballarat Football Netball League A grade competition has been talked about for months and its time for all the preseason training to be put to the test. It will be a big opening round of the competition with the unveiling of some new recruits and new coaches. Sunbury Lions should open their account with a round one win when they take on Darley Devils. Sunbury Lions have finally made the call to promote gun goaler Amanda Cusack who has proven herself at the elite level over the last couple of years. Sunbury will once again have depth all over the court with Ruth Smith, who polled well in last year’s Sally McLean Medal returning for another year. Ash Hardy will again be hard to score against as she leads the defensive end. Amy Giani will once again lead from the front for the Devils alongside some young guns. Prediction: Sunbury to record their first win of the season. Reigning grand finalist East Point will be looking to start their season with a win when they match up with Lake Wendouree. Lake Wendouree showed plenty of improvement last season with youngsters Elonie Hooper, Claudia Plange and Ella Bibby all finding their feet as senior A grade players. Those young players will have plenty of speed an excitement as they start another season. As for East Point they will stick with a formula that has worked so well for them over the past 10 years with the like of Farrell, Jew, Smith, Geljon all in the mix while Indy Burke and Kate Burt will also return again. Prediction: East Point to win in a close one. Melton South will meet cross town rivals Melton Bloods in their first encounter of the year. Melton South have a new coach at the helm and will have no doubt picked up some new players. Melton will also have new coach at the helm with Melissa Climas returning to the league. Both her and her

daughter Alexis have been involved in the BFNL before however they were previously at Melton South. The biggest loss for Melton South would be Tanisha Salenoa. It will be a good challenge for both teams to find out where they are at this season. Prediction: Melton South to win over a developing Melton Bloods. Sebastopol will host Ballarat in what is arguably the game of the round. If both teams go in at full strength you would think Sebastopol would be too strong. The rumour is though Sebastopol have a few prior engagements and could be short of players come Saturday afternoon. Georgia Cann will be a tough match up for Swans who in the past have relied on their young defenders. Ballarat have retained coach Lisa James and given how competitive she is, she will see this as a perfect opportunity to cause an upset in round one. Prediction: Ballarat to win by a small margin. North Ballarat City will once again be the team to beat as they meet Bacchus Marsh in the opening round. After a premiership year last season they have gone from strength to strength during the preseason. North will heavily rely on youngsters Maddy Selmon and Zoe Nevitt through the midcourt and in attack while Emma Church while hold down the defensive end. Add reigning Sally Mclean medallist Stacey McCartin into the mix and sister Gina McCartin and it is hard to see anyone knocking them off. Bacchus Marsh made some big inroad last season with Michael Saker in charge. Saker who was the coach of the year voted on by his peers will have a few tricks up his sleeve this season. Prediction: North Ballarat City to kick start their season with a win. Redan will have another week on the sidelines to evaluate their second round as they have a first round bye.

DARLEY DIARY

Season 2019 is here at last and Darley Football Netball Club celebrates our Centenary Year. We are hoping in anticipation of a great season on and off the field to celebrate our 100th. Once again, we owe so much and are extremely grateful to the Darley Army and our wonderful sponsors. You all make us the great, family club we are with an enviable culture and strength. Today at the Devils Den we welcome the Sunbury Lions for what should be a great day of footy and netball to kick off the season. Then we will rest up with no matches over the Easter weekend, before hosting the Cobras in our local derby on Saturday 27th. We are celebrating a 30-year reunion today for the dual 1989 Premiership teams – our Seniors and our Reserves. Welcome back to the Devils Den to all you players and officials who took part in our success 30 years ago.

30

bfnl.com.au

We held our Season Opener in the Rooms last Thursday evening and proudly presented our #1 Membership Tickets to Gordon & Lorraine Closter. Gordon & Lorraine have been a huge part of our club for many years and we appreciate everything you are to the Devils. We must also pass on our Congratulations to a couple of Darley champions who have assisted in the Darley breeding program in the off season. To Brad and Hayley Inglis on the arrival of their spunky little boy Leo Peter Inglis. To Darren and Steph Leonard on the arrival of their beautiful little girl Lucy Grace Leonard. The Darley FNC are so very happy for you all and we can’t wait to meet these two new little recruits in the coming weeks at their 2nd homes.

GO DEVILS!

2019 SEASON RECORD

SUNBURY SNIPPETS

Season 2019 is a very significant time in the life of the Sunbury Football Netball Club as it is 140 years since the original Sunbury Football Club was formed. The very successful clubs’ season launch last weekend set the tone for the year. A special call out to Mick Edwards who offered to shed his signature dreadlocks to sport the Puka Up campaign. The shaving of the locks was the highlight of the night and his actions set the standard for how the club can overcome the disappointment of the Senior Football team missing the finals for the first time in its 22 year.

Coaches

140 Club

As a mark of this significant event the club has formed Club 140. Membership of the club brings with it an individually numbered scarf in club colours full membership of the Club and social club and other benefits. See Allan O’ Connor or Brian O’Loughlin to become a member.

Punters Club

It is quite fitting in this historical year that the club welcomes back as senior coach former junior and senior premiership player Travis Hodgson. On the coaching front we also welcome current senior player Corey Hansen who is taking on the role of Under 19 coach as well as Tami Hardwick who is taking on role of coach of D and E Netball.

Interest amongst members in the Punters club has grown so much so that we now have two teams in the SFNC Punters club Quaddie competition- the Royal Blue team and the White team The groups numbers have been swelled by the introduction of some extremely well credentialled students of the turf and the competition between the two teams will, dare I say, be quite intense given that all will be trying to avoid claiming the infamous WPITWWW trophy awarded at the end of the season.

A MARS a day helps you work, rest and play

2019 SEASON RECORD

MELTON BLOODS BANTER Welcome everyone to the first edition of the Bloods Banter for 2019. It has been a hectic preseason with all the issues at Maccy Park due to construction, power and water issues but now that the ball is about to bounce, we can put all that behind us and get on with the game. Our first match up for 2019 is against arch rival Melton South at the Melton Rec Reserve. As always this will be a keenly contested game in all grades. We would like to welcome all new football and netball players coaches, parents, volunteers and supporters to the club, and we hope your time with us will be enjoyable and successful. Especially welcome to the Open Age Women’s team who, under new coach Beau Beck, had a great win in a practice match last week. Vale Ken Higginbotham. Former President, Treasurer, Life Member and Club stalwart, Ken Higginbotham passed away last month. Ken did so much for the club over decades of service and the club is a better place for his involvement. He will be sadly missed. Condolences to Norma and Higginbotham family. We also welcome new sponsors to the club, Schnitz Woodgrove, Employment Plus, Elite Tyres, and welcome existing sponsors back to the club. We value your support. Also, a big welcome to Michael “Licca” Licciardo the Under 19 coach for 2019 and Melissa Climas, coaching several sides in the Netball. Welcome also to our football Team Managers for 2019. Jacko Hibbert for the Seniors, Leanne Newman for Reserves and Paula Syme for the Under 19’s. As always, our team managers perform a vital role in getting our players on the field and will appreciate any assistance you

can give in the way of acting as timekeepers, interchange stewards, scoreboard operators, water carriers for home and away games.

Social Notes.

Our Season Launch was held on the 4th and a successful golf day on Friday the 5th of April. Next cab off the rank is the BLOODS BIG BASH tonight at the Clubrooms. The highlight of the 2019 Social Calendar this year will be the 140th anniversary celebration to be held at the Luxor on the 20th of July. We are delighted to announce Billy Brownless will be the MC for what promises to be a memorable night. Stand by for further updates. Membership payments are now due. Some payments have been trickling in but there is still a way to go. Most football players have been issued with an invoice. If you have not received one or want another copy, see Clarky. Any unpaid invoices will get a gentle reminder over the coming weeks. Netballers are paying via bank transfer and many have been received and receipts will be issued as payments are received. A Player Sponsorship scheme is available and can help with your membership. Direct debit is also available. Sponsor of the week is Café Kebab in High Street, Melton. Call in and see Jimmy and his team for the best Kebabs in Melton. Keep in touch with all club activities via our website www.meltonfnc. com.au or on Facebook.

McDONALD’S BALLARAT FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE

SEBASTOPOL FOOTBALL

With the long pre-season drawing to a close we very much look forward to what our footballers and netballers have been working extremely hard towards; another season of fun, growth and success. For the 2019 season the addition of club legends Sam Jenkins and Jimmy Carroll, as well as proven performers Luke Kiel, Tobias Thoolen, Sauce Rhook and Hugo Papst will make for an exciting season under the great man Leigh Hutchinson.

An exciting mention must go out to the under 15 boys who made the grand final in last weekends Lightning Premiership. The under 13 girls experienced success of their own taking home the chocolates in their grand final.

2019 SEASON RECORD

NETBALL REPORT Netball Manager - Kim Bailey

Welcome back to Ballarat FNL netball in 2019.

Its great to be back in the BFNL after a year at Netball Victoria and seeing our competition continuing to go from strength to strength. I would like to thank Grace Bibby for all her hard work and commitment she gave to the BFNL in 2018 and to see the crowd numbers throughout the finals series was a credit to you all. 2019 sees some stability return to the coaching ranks with most of last year’s coaches returning to the role creating a great platform to develop for the league and clubs alone. Long term sustainability comes from stability in coaches and players which builds a positive culture. This year, AFL Goldfields has introduced a Player Points System, which operates on a similar basis to that of football. The points system will run throughout the three AFL Goldfield leagues as well in AFL Barwon’s three competitions. The objectives of the PPS are: •P romote player loyalty and junior development •S upport the role of volunteers undertake in managing their clubs by: -M inimising the need to fundraise for player payments - Providing a more competitive environment on field, that encourages more volunteers to support at club level - Providing incentive to spend more time and effort in the development of Netball, a welcoming environment and growing the game within the local community •S upport the Equalisation of the community netball competitions •E nsure teams fielded in the competitions are strong and as equally matched as possible •P rovide the best opportunities for players to develop and display their skills •P rovide opportunities to compete at a community level within an orderly and fair system •E nable team spirit and public support •E ncourage community and corporate sponsorships of Community Clubs •R educe the inflationary nature of player payments to assist clubs survive financially and reduce financial burden/ stress on clubs It is great to see that every club has been able to enter an E grade team in 2019. E grade is a great initiative and

allows the BFNL to cater for all ages and all levels of netball, making our competition truly an inclusive one. With the demise of Barwon Junior Championships, our 15 and under interleague team has been entered in the Monday Night Wendouree Netball Association competition and are having great success. Under the tutorage of Deb Hutchinson and Damien Mullane, the girls are coming up against tougher competition in the open age competition and having some great games. It was a busy weekend last weekend with the season launch taking place at City Oval and seeing the presentation of the premierships flag and balls presented to the respective winners. North Ballarat was again the recipients of the A grade flag and no doubt will go into the season as the early favourites, with Jordan Bibby returning to the A grade team, strengthening their already amazing shooting circle. We also held the junior lightning premiership at Marty Busch Reserve and for the first time in several years the weather held up and we got through with little or none – and no lightning. The standard was fantastic all throughout the weekend. In the 15&U competition, we saw Lake Wendouree take on Sebastopol in what was a wonderful game, displaying the up and coming netballers in our competition. The game see sawed but in the end Lake Wendouree took out the Grand Final 15 to 11. Lake Wendouree’s Molly Clifton was awarded best on court. Sebastopol has a great weekending winning the 13&U grand final with Maddie Lewis from Sebas being name best on court. This weekend we see the National Underage championship in action is Brisbane. Two of our local girls were selected in the Victorian 17&U team for 2019. Lake Wendouree’s Charlotte Todd gained selection for the first time, but unfortunately suffered an ACL injury earlier in February ruling her out of the game for the rest of the year. North Ballarat’s Poppy Douglass has again made a state team and will play a pivotal part in Victoria’s bid to go back to back title holders. We wish Poppy the best of luck. So, we kick off the season with same great games fixtured and we should see some close results and see who is going to make a statement and come out firing setting the pace for the year. Good luck to all teams.

Happy Netballing.

The McDonald’s Mark and Goal of the Year awards are back! If you witness a spectacular mark of goal that happens during the McDonald’s Ballarat FNL Senior Football competition, please consider nominating it in the one of the following ways:

a) Via BFNL.TV at http://www.aflgoldfields.tv/highlight-nominations; or b) Via email to shane@aflgoldfields.com.au Please be sure to indicate the rough time of the relevant quarter and roughly where on the ground the highlight took place so we can pinpoint exactly where to find the footage. An example is as follows: Sunbury player Liam Brady took a high flying mark on the wing near the coaches box at around the 10min mark of the 3rd quarter in their match against Ballarat. All nominations will be shown at the 2019 Henderson Medal where the winners will also be announced.
