Annual Report 2012
It is with great pleasure that I present my report as Chairman of Football & Netball Geelong. Firstly, I must thank the staff and Commissioners of Football & Netball Geelong for their combined efforts and performance throughout the year. Our operational staff do a magnificent job in handling the day to day issues that occur on a regular weekly basis during the entire year. We are now responsible for administering football and netball competitions for over 11,000 participants and this number continues to grow on an annual basis. Lee Hartman heads up our team as the Chief Executive Officer and he continues to lead our organisation in a very professional manner. Lee has now been our CEO for five years and our organisation continues to achieve impressive growth under his leadership. The undoubted highlight of season 2012 has been the introduction of a graded Colts competition. This concept was not universally embraced by all of the 34 clubs who compete in the Geelong Football League; Bellarine Football League and Geelong & District Football League. Nevertheless, our vision of competitive Under 18’s football to support maximum participation and retention to senior football was adopted, which I believe has been a resounding success. Portarlington Football Club won the Colts Division 4 grand final which is the direct result of graded football. I understand that this victory was the first Under 18’s premiership ever won by Portarlington Football Club. If the Colts competition hadn’t eventuated, the likelihood is that Portarlington Football Club would have struggled to field an Under 18 team in the Bellarine Football League. Rather, they have competed in the appropriate competition for their ability and have tasted premiership success. I’m convinced that similar feel good stories will continue to happen in the future with our graded Colts competitions. I must acknowledge the efforts of our Football & Netball Geelong Commissioners in Allan Bliss, Greg Welsh and Dick Underwood, together with our CEO, Lee Hartman and our Operations Manager, Michael Limb for their vision, wisdom and hard work in making the
2
graded Colts competitions a reality and success in season 2012. I would also like to specifically acknowledge the efforts of our Commissioner, Peter Kelly, for his wholehearted dedication and involvement with the establishment of a Geelong/Colac Regional Commission as proposed by AFL Victoria in their 2011 report on the review of Victorian country football. Peter’s vast knowledge on the strategic roles and responsibilities of our own Football & Netball Geelong Commission has been invaluable to AFL Victoria. He has been an active member of the AFL Victoria steering committee which has been involved in establishing 13 separate regional commissions throughout country Victoria to separately administer and control football and netball within their own regions. I would also like to thank Allan Bliss for representing Football & Netball Geelong on the Geelong/ Colac region working party which was involved in establishing the new Geelong/Colac Region Commission. I am delighted to confirm that Football & Netball Geelong will affiliate with AFL Victoria and that the new Geelong/ Colac Region Commission will be up and running for season 2013. We are excited with this development and are convinced that the provision of additional people resources can only assist our clubs with the successful operation of their own football and netball activities. I would like to once again acknowledge and thank our corporate partners and sponsors for their financial support this year. The reality is that our organisation could not exist with its present staffing structure without the financial support of our sponsors. Whilst all of our sponsors are important, special thanks are extended to our naming rights sponsors – Blood Toyota (19 years) and the Dow Chemical Company (29 years) (previously Rohm & Haas). Both of these sponsorship arrangements have been outstanding and we are hopeful that both companies can continue their community involvement by supporting us and grass roots football and netball for many more years to come. Congratulations are extended to the Dow Chemical Company for their recent 50th anniversary of conducting business operations from their Point Henry site. I must once again thank Brendan Beveridge, Scott McLeod and the entire team at the Geelong Football Umpires League for their combined efforts throughout the entire 2012 football season. We look forward to working more closely with the Geelong Football Umpires League with their inclusion in the new Geelong/Colac Region Commission.
I would like to thank Geoff Stribley, Charlie Johnson and all our Tribunal members for their efforts during the year. Whilst the introduction of set penalties for some reports has reduced their overall work load, the independent Tribunal was still required on most Monday nights throughout the football season. I would like to acknowledge and thank the City of Greater Geelong, the Surf Coast Shire and the Borough of Queenscliffe for their ongoing support to the upgrading of facilities and infrastructure of our clubs. Grovedale Football & Netball Club opened their upgraded social clubrooms this year whilst new netball rooms for Geelong Amateur Football & Netball Club were also officially opened. New social rooms and facilities are currently underway at Torquay Football Club; Queenscliff Football Club and Anglesea Football Club. I would like to extend a big thank you to all of our Councils for recognising the important community service that all of our sporting clubs provide in our region. I would also like to thank John Mitchell, the outgoing Mayor of the City of Greater Geelong. John has been a great supporter of our sporting clubs and his time as Mayor has seen major facility improvements at many of our clubs. I wish John the best with his future endeavours and we look forward to working closely with our newly elected Mayor, Keith Fagg, in continuing to emphasise the important community role that all of our sporting clubs provide in the region. Congratulations are extended to all of our football and netball premiership teams this year, especially South Barwon Football & Netball Club for taking out the senior football and A Grade netball titles, as well as Queenscliff Football Club on winning back to back senior football premierships and Anglesea Netball Club for going one better in 2012 and winning the A Grade netball premiership. Finally, I would like to sincerely thank all of our member clubs for the countless hours and the invaluable work that is done throughout the entire year with our youth and young adults. The volunteer network of coaches, team managers, trainers, timekeepers, bar and canteen staff, committee members, etc. is made available at little cost but is worth so much more in providing our youth with important life skills such as commitment, responsibility, teamwork, honesty, integrity, hard work, respect, etc. The close family environment that exists at all clubs is special and extremely important in shaping our youth into responsible citizens of the future. ANDREW WIERZBOWSKI
Chairman’s Report
To my Staff, another great year, Michael Limb, the Operations Manager, and our operation support crew, Nikki Cooke – Netball Manager and Luke Maher – Football Co-Ordinator have all continued to grow in 2012. I hope they both continue to develop as the competitions grow. Our part time staff, thanks to you also, Ian McTaggart, Jeanette Watt, Shirley Keam and Sarah Scott. A huge thank you to Deb Thewlis, she is the first contact of our business and does an outstanding job. Thank you Deb for your willingness to go the extra yards when needed.

in 2012, and especially to all the coaches that put in time and effort to put the teams out to represent our leagues, GFL moves to the 1 v 2 game next year and we can’t wait. Bellarine were back on the winners list after 5 years, a great effort by John Fitzgerald and his team. Thank you also must go to several people that go about their tasks with little thanks, Geoff Stribley , Charlie Johnson and the Tribunal Panel, another year of great work.. Thanks to Steven Reaper, Brett Anderson & the other VCFL team members that help deliver resources & support, to the GFUL, thanks to Brendan Beveridge and your team for their work and cooperation in 2012, Scott McLeod was a welcome addition in 2012 and we look forward to working with him into the future. I would like to thank all Club Executives, Members, Players and Volunteers, you are the life blood of our competitions, it is your game and we hope to grow and build it in conjunction with your input and support.
Annual Report 2012
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Shires and councils that we work with. All do a great job to ensure we have safe playable grounds each week and your help and support is appreciated at both league and club level. City of Greater Geelong continues to lead the way in ground management and facilities, Thanks to John and the Councillors and to Stephen and your hard working staff. The Surf Coast Shire have come a long way with facilities in the last few years. Thanks to Brian and your council, Torquay, Anglesea, Modewarre have work underway or close to starting and the new Precinct where we held the BFNL Netball grand finals in 2012. The Borough of Queenscliffe, thanks to Bob, your ground with new scoreboard and that function centre, how good will that be for the local community? Also the Colac Otway shire are providing great support and are about to re surface Central reserve, well done to all.
Re
To our Major naming rights Partners, Blood Toyota & The Dow Chemical Company, we thank you again, your support continues to grow, both being long term partners over a number of years which is very well received amongst all our leagues . Also to Warralily, Buckley’s Entertainment Centre, The Gordon, GMHBA The Geelong Advertiser, Corio Bay Health Group, Bendigo Bank, Bendigo Community Banks, Kempe, Alcoa & St. Laurence, all very much a part of our organisation and our continued growth could not be possible without your support. We have several other partners who in their own right make significant contributions, we also thank you. Our work in the community is driven by the support we get from our partners. Thanks again to Jock McMahon and Ray Digby for their tireless efforts in 2012 with the Geelong FC Car Park and during the finals which raises much needed funds for Football & Netball Geelong.

Season 2012 was another successful year, where our Competitions continued to grow.
We are hoping to have a slightly new Governance structure under AFLVIC in 2013, with a regional Commission to look after all Leagues in the Geelong and Colac region and the umpires as well. This will benefit the club with extra resources. Finally thank you to the Football & Netball Geelong Commission, It is a pleasure to work with you, Andrew Wierzbowski and Peter Kelly continue to mentor me and give me the guidance required, also to Alan, Ian, Graham, Anne, Trevor, Dick, Greg & Mat, Thank you. See you at the Football in 2013.
Thank you to the Players that represented the leagues at interleague

It has once again been a pleasure working with the clubs to ensure the competitions operate effectively and address the needs of our broad member base.
Annual Report 2012
Our current charter is to oversee the operational procedures of Football & Netball for the GFL and BFL, as well as GJF, and CDFNL Football. All competitions, and in particular the respective Junior sections continue to flourish. Friday night netball has expanded to the extent that other options will need to be sought next year to cater for the number of girls wishing to participate. Geelong Junior Football continues to expand with the introduction this year of teams from Little River and the likelihood of teams from Colac being entered in 2013. Whilst the focus at Junior level is on participation and development, it was a positive reflection on the grading system to see the majority of clubs represented throughout the finals series. The new Colts structure commenced this year, catering for players in the Under 181/2 age group and encompassing teams from clubs whose senior bodies are affiliated with BFL, GFL and GDFL. As is the case with all new concepts, there were a few perceived concerns from some clubs and some teething issues that needed to be worked through, but the results reflected a massive improvement with regard to providing competitive games of football. We conducted 4 divisions with 10, 8, 10 and 8 teams competing respectively in each division totalling 76 teams in all. More than 40% of the games resulted in a margin of 20 points or less, including 4 draws and 10 more that were within a kick of each other at the final siren. The number of 10 goal or more margins was also negligible, therefore allowing the clubs placed in the lower divisions the opportunity to experience potential success, whilst those in the higher divisions were challenged each week, thus enhancing their development for future years. All clubs are to be congratulated for the co-operative nature with which they approached the competition, and with an end of year review being conducted, we are looking to ensure the structure continues to improve and operate in the most effective and positive manner. Our interleague campaigns were extremely successful in 2012, with all representative teams victorious. GFL Coach, Glen Wallace and his coaching staff once again received great support from the players and clubs, which reflected in the onfield success they experienced against Ballarat. The
4
win moved the GFL into 2nd position on the VCFL rankings, with a game against Goulburn Valley FNL looming in 2013 to determine the number one ranking in Country Victoria. The BFL, under the guidance of Coach John Fitzgerald finally broke the drought with a massive victory over Western Border FNL at Simonds Stadium. The support from both clubs and players was instrumental in the BFNL producing a standard more in keeping with the status of the league. It is hoped this can be continued in 2013 to ensure the BFNL is reinstated to a more indicative place in the rankings. Both Colts teams also had impressive wins against sides from the Ballarat FNL, as did the GFNL Netball Senior and 19 & Under Sides. Unfortunately the Western Border FNL did not provide a team for our BFNL Netball girls to play. I would like to thank all coaches; Glen Wallace, John Fitzgerald, Barry Orvis and Brendan Forssman and their coaching staff for their time and effort that they provided during the preparation and on match day. I would also like to thank the support staff who volunteered their time and effort to ensure the players and leagues had all they needed to get the teams onto the field. Gary Holt and Brian (Bull) Bennett from the BFNL, and Charlie Johnson and his helpers from the GFNL all did a great job, as did their support staff and trainers. I would also like to echo the appreciation expressed by Nikki in her Netball Report to all the coaches and support volunteers who provided their time, expertise and effort to ensure the GFNL Netball experience was positive and successful. BFNL The top 5 teams were very even throughout the season, with Queenscliff following on from their success in 2011 proving to be the benchmark losing only one game during the season, with the margin that game a solitary point. Barwon Heads proved to be the most dangerous side outside the final 5 with their talented young players providing some upset victories against finalists and nearly toppling the ladder leaders. Modewarre were the big improvers, gallantly making it to the Preliminary final, only to be overrun by a strong Torquay outfit. The Grand Final saw Queenscliff click into gear and despite young Torquay forward Scott Hughes kicking his 100th goal for the season, it was 2 in a row for the Coutas after breaking a 36 year drought in 2011. The Ash medal was a close tussle with Modewarre young gun Joshua Finch edging out new Queenscliff midfielder Brad Ridings in the last couple of rounds to win his 2nd medal in 3 years. GFNL The 2012 season saw the fortunes of many sides fluctuate, with only Sth Barwon providing any form of consistency. St Joseph’s and Newtown & Chilwell looked to have the firepower to take them all the way, with last year’s premiers Bell Park slow to get their game going. Leopold and Lara had their moments where they looked to be genuine contenders, whilst St Mary’s and Colac paid for their lack of consistency by missing out in the
finals race. In the end it was the Grand Finalists from the past 2 years who won their way through to the big day, but Sth Barwon’s speed, strength and experience saw them once again reign supreme with a convincing victory. Clinton Wells & Jarrod Westwood dominated with 7 & 5 goals respectively. The Mathieson medal was another thrilling count, with Tim Sheringham from Bell Park being joined by St Joseph’s Daniel Lovick who polled 3 votes in the final game to once again provide us with joint winners. Andrew Kelly polled 6 more votes, but was unfortunately ineligible due to a one week suspension incurred in round one. CDFNL Once again Lorne & Forrest were unable to provide junior teams in all sections. It was decided that rather than maintain the same fixture as the seniors and have the players miss up to 6 games of football including groups of up to 3 consecutive games, we adopted an alternate fixture for the juniors to maximise their opportunities to play. Unlike previous seasons, there were no standout teams in the Senior competition with different clubs staking their claim at different stages throughout the season. Last season’s grand finalists Birregurra and Sth Colac were joined by Lorne, Forrest & Simpson. There was not a lot between the top 3 teams, with Forrest, Lorne & Birregurra, all very close. Lorne & Forrest battled it out in the Grand Final, with Forrest hanging on to win with a nailbiting 5 point victory. The CDFNL continues to provide classic grand finals with the last 2 being decided by less than a kick. Hamish Tamlin from Apollo Bay was the recipient of the Jack Mahoney Medal, just ahead of joint runners up, Jake O’Dwyer from Sth Colac and last year’s joint winner Cameron Wright from Birregurra. Data Management Management of data associated with Football & Netball Geelong (and Colac & District FNL) competitions continues to be a huge task with expectations from the governing body and members becoming greater each year. The service we now provide is all encompassing, including player registrations, transfers, match results, media reports and live score apps for all senior Football matches throughout the season, as well as football and Netball Games throughout the finals series. For this to function effectively it requires not only the expertise and availability of our staff members, but also the dedication of Club volunteers, who again this year have completed the task with little fuss and due diligence in its accuracy and timeliness. Thanks goes to those many Club based volunteers acting as secretaries, coaches, team managers or other club and team based officials. Without your efforts the whole process would not have been possible. Thanks yet again to Mark Commons for his total dedication in assisting with the results service. Mark works on a Saturday afternoon keeping tabs on the results service including the quarter by quarter football scores and final results text service for both football and netball. With Mark’s assistance it just
happens! Our results are provided to the Geelong Advertiser, Colac Herald and Warrnambool Standard, other local weekly papers such as The Echo, Surfcoast Times and Western District News along with the Victorian media outlets, The Herald Sun and The Age via AAP, as well as K-Rock and Southern Cross TV (Regional Channel 10). (All data taken directly from the AFL Football Sporting Pulse and Netball Victoria data bases) Football transfers to or from Football & Netball Geelong clubs (including permits to play with the VFL, TAC and Interclub permits) totalled 2,339 for season 2012. In the Colac & District FL, 456 transfers/permits were transacted. Thanks to all the Club Transfer Secretaries, both football and netball, who managed the electronic clearances expeditiously. Football Geelong oversaw more than 300 games of football and netball played each weekend of the 2012 season. With few exceptions, all results were available on our web site prior to 6.00pm on the day that each game was contested. To meet this standard, we rely solely on the dedicated team managers or secretaries at each Club each weekend. All must be congratulated for the efforts they continue to provide to ensure our members are well informed about our competitions. I would like to publicly acknowledge and thank our CEO Lee Hartman for his professional, supportive and thorough leadership, our operational staff, Luke and Nikki who manage their respective areas professionally with minimal input required from me, also Shirley, Mark Commons, Ian McTaggart, Jeanette Watt and Deb Thewlis for their hard work and attention to detail throughout the year, and express again my appreciation to all the club volunteers for their hours of work committed to ensuring all the required tasks are performed in a timely and efficient manner. Michael Limb Operations Manager.
2012 was yet another fantastic season of Junior Football in the Geelong Region, with 172 teams and 4,002 participants competing in Geelong Junior Football from Under 16 to Under 10. A huge thank you to all who have contributed in season 2012, to the sponsors, KEMPE, The Geelong Advertiser, Buckley’s Entertainment Centre, , Geelong Technical Centre, Sportznut, Red Onion, Kerr’s Hire, Victorian Fitness Academy, Harvey’s on Highton and GMHBA, without your generosity it would be impossible to run such a great competition. Our Junior Interleague carnival this year was a huge success. We had 4 age groups competing, Under 13, 14, 15 and 16. Geelong Junior Football played the Ballarat Football League at Maddingly Park Bacchus Marsh in fantastic ground and weather conditions. Our Under 13’s coached by Darren Troy kicked off the day in great style winning by 49 points. James Worpel from Bell Park was awarded the VCFL Medal for Best on the Ground. Russell Lucas and Sean Atkinson were again in charge of the Under 14’s. They were able to keep their perfect winning record intact defeating Ballarat by 49 points. Jackson McLachlan from St Joseph’s was awarded the VCFL Medal. Our only defeat came in the Under 15 game. Missing at least 6 of the best players in this age group, Geelong was over run in the end going down by 10 goals. The Under 16 game concluded the day with our boys running out winners by 51 points, Harrison Kol from St Mary’s received the VCFL Medal. Geelong Junior Football retained the Bob Davis Shield with a 3-1 win. Thank you to our coaches and their assistants, to Haami Williams and Tim Russell coaching Geelong Junior Football for the first time, well done and we hope you can continue in your role next season. A special thank you to Neville Daffy, who stood down after the carnival, thank you for all of your help over the years. All of us at Football and Netball Geelong appreciate your work and wish you well

with future endeavours.. Congratulations to the clubs that hosted junior finals this season, especially to Simon Hose, Neil Vivian and the Grovedale Football Club on a remarkably well run Grand Final weekend. On what is the busiest weekend for Under 14 and 16 footballers, the Grovedale Football Club went out of their way to make everyone feel welcome. Also thank you to everyone that attended the weekend. To all club coaches, team managers, trainers and volunteers, I thank you for all your hard work. I’m sure it doesn’t go un-noticed at club level because I for one respect the amount of time you dedicate to your team and your club. To the parents, thanks for letting your children be a part of Geelong Junior Football. Friday nights, Saturdays or Sundays, you all give your time and effort and I appreciate that. To all of the players, boys and girls, that were part of Geelong Junior Football throughout the year, a huge thanks and I hope that you all come back and play footy in 2013. Lastly, to all of the Junior Coordinators, ALL of you do a fantastic job and I can only hope that you all continue in season 2013. Luke Maher

Tribunal Report - Charlie Johnson Unfortunately it has been an extremely busy year for the Tribunal members. A total of 84 reports were laid in the 2012 season. This was 12 more than in 2011. These reports comprised 27 Senior Grade, 17 Reserve Grade, 26 Colts and 14 from Junior Grades. This includes 9 investigations: one at the request of the GFUL, four at the request of Clubs for off the ball incidents, and four for breaches of the new VCFL Cybersafety Policy. 37 players accepted the set penalty option, ten more than in 2011. One Colts player failed to appear and is suspended until such time as he attends a hearing. A total of 165 matches
will be missed by players through suspensions received in 2012. I would like to thank our chairman Geoff Stribley for his assistance again in the 2012 season, and our other tribunal members for always making themselves available. We continue to welcome new members to the Tribunal including our first female member. Each have added a range of skills that have been of great benefit to the panel. I would like to thank Michael Limb (FNG) and Stan Pokorney, (GFUL) for their co-ordination and scheduling of the Tribunal sessions, and their work communicating details to clubs and umpires respectively.

Annual Report 2012
Season 2013 was another great success with continued growth in our competitions. I would like to thank our corporate partners, without their support we could not run the competitions we do. Blood, DOW, Bendigo Bank, Brazilian Butterfly, Kempe, Alcoa, Espresso Alfresco & Corio Bay Health Group have been great supporters of FNG for many years now and we look forward to supporting you all and continuing our relationship for many years to come. A big part of the growth of our sport is due to the wonderful media coverage this sport now receives at a local, national and international level. I would like to acknowledge and thank the Geelong Advertiser for their support of our great sport in the coverage they provide each week during the season. I look forward to working closely with you in 2012 to develop this relationship and continue to increase our coverage for this growing sport. Congratulations to all our 2012 Premiers on a fantastic season and walking away with the end result we all strive for. Congratulations to Anglesea Netball Club for taking home the A & B Grade Premierships after many years. South Barwon Netball Club was again the Premiers for 2012 overcoming Leopold in the Grand Final. Thank-you to all clubs and spectators for supporting our Grand Final Days both BFNL OR GFNL. The crowds were fantastic this year and I know the players appreciate the support they receive – making their achievements extra special. BFNL & GFNL Representative Teams 2012 Representative Team Trials were held by both leagues at the beginning of the season. I would like to personally thank Vicky McElligott, Rae Wilding & Chris Browne for their support and assistance with running the trials. I would like to thank Leah Wilson, Melanie Savage, Heidi Shaw, Brooke Davis, Vicky McElligott, Sascha Veldhuis, Kellie Ricketts, Bruce Waldron, Kaitlyn Amor & Bree Cail, Claire Deretic, Brooke for assisting with the selections for the 2012 Representative teams. Thank-you to all our representative team coaches for 2012; Denise Alaalatoa (BFNL 11/U), Vicky McElligott (BFNL 13/U), Brooke Davis (BFNL 15/U),

Leah Wilson (BFNL 17/U), Stacey Benney (BFNL Open Team), Bruce Waldron (GFNL 13/U), Kaitlyn Amor & Bree Cail (GFNL 15/U), Sascha Veldhuis (GFNL 17/U) and Simone Segrave (GFNL Open Team). Congratulations to the GFNL 17/U team for defending their title and taking home the 17/u State Champion title for 2 years in a row. Congratulations to all our rep teams who were so close to making finals at the Association Championships only missing out on percentage. I encourage all players to trial and represent their league next year. Again, thank-you to all umpires, team managers, coaches & players who make these teams so successful. Interleague 2012: Unfortunately BFNL Netball teams did not participate in the Interleague competition in 2012 but I know the players and coaches are keen to be involved again in 2013. The Geelong FNL travelled to Ballarat to compete in the Interleague Competition. The open team once again were triumphant on the day with Shelley Scott named best on court. The 19/U team celebrated success in 2012 after their disappointment last year. Both teams had significant wins and I would like to thank the girls for giving up their time to train and play and put our strongest teams available out on court. Thank-you to Jill Leader (GFNL 19/U) & Simone Segrave (GFNL Open Team) for taking on the coaching roles in 2012. Your support and dedication to the Interleague Program is fantastic and we hope to see you involved again in 2013. This is a great competition and gives the players the opportunity to compete against the best players in opposing leagues. I would encourage all players to take the time to trial next year and remember it is an honour to represent your league. 11/U Competitions & Carnival: The 11/U competitions across both the BFNL & GFNL again increased in numbers in 2012. With 40 teams alone in our Friday Night Competition plus our BFNL Saturday teams this age group has the largest participation numbers. This is fantastic to see girls wanting to get involved at a young age. Hopefully we can continue to develop their skills to keep them involved in the sport. Hopefully 2013 will see the introduction of the net-set-go program into our clubs via local schools. The 11/U Carnival was held again this year. Due to the large number of teams the Carnival ran for a whole day with teams split into 2 divisions. Once again Maddi Browne from the Melbourne Vixens was in attendance to have photos with the girls and sign autographs. A huge thank-you to Maddi for giving up her time for over
400 11/U netballers! Corio Bay Friday Night Competition & Umpire Development Due to the growth in our Netball Competitions our Friday Night Competition was at capacity this year with 9 courts being used across 5 time slots on a Friday Night. Over 90 teams with 900 players participate in our Friday Night Competition. The growth of the competition is demanding alternative options be sought to accommodate the growth in this competition for 2013. I would like to personally thank Carmel Fitzgerald for giving up her time every Friday afternoon to come down and assist Shirley with the running of the Friday Night Competition. Also a special thank-you to Shirley our Friday Night Coordinator for taking on the extra role this season of completing the umpire rosters on a Friday Night. This is a massive job and Shirley seems to handle it with ease. Thank-you to our Friday Night Mentors Kate Harding, Vikki Blutch, Sharon Taylor, Vicki O’Neill, Shirley Fagan and many others for providing the trainee umpires (umpire development squad) with valuable advice and assistance to help develop their umpiring. We took on over 20 new trainee umpires in 2012 so as you can imagine there are a lot of resources and time that go into developing these young umpires. Thank-you to Alcoa for once again providing the funding to assist the running of our Umpire Development Program. Without this money these girls would have to pay to learn to umpire and this is something we would like to avoid at all costs! It would remiss of me not mention our Umpire Development Panel and League Umpire Co-ordinator at this time. Jenny Harwood (FNG Umpire Co-ordinator), Heather Carroll, Kate Harding and Cheryl Van Dreumel from our umpire development panel, roster all of our panel umpires for our A & B Grade games throughout the season and all the games for our final series across both leagues. It is a huge job to co-ordinate all of these umpires and to ensure we have enough umpires to cover each game every week. I feel that we have taken a positive step forward this season with the merging of the 2 leagues enabling our panel umpires the variety of umpiring across the 2 competitions. Jenny Harwood commenced the League Co-ordinator role this season and I would like to thank her for her professionalism, many extra hours, patience and support over the past 8 months. I truly hope to welcome Jenny back on board for 2013. The All Abilities Competition has grown again this year with the inclusion of the Ocean Grove and South Barwon All Ability Netball Teams bringing our teams to 8. The Grand Final was played on the show court at Kardinia Park with
Chairman’s Report full Grand Stands. Congratulations to Newtown & Chilwell who came away with the Alcoa All Abilities Premiership Cup for 2012 and to Ocean Grove for playing in a Grand Final in their first year participating in the competition. Finally I would like to say thank-you to my colleagues at Football Netball Geelong. I love my job and that has a lot to do with the fantastic group of people I get to work with everyday. I look forward to 2013 and the challenges that the new season will bring. Finally to the clubs; I am blessed that I get paid to work in an industry I am passionate about, you all give up your time, many of you away from your families to enable over 3000 women to take the court and play our wonderful game of netball each week. You ARE the unsung heroes of the sport working tirelessly behind the scenes. I am honoured to work with you all towards the same goal. I wish you all the best for Christmas and the New Year and look forward to season 2013.

The senior section of the Club had a moderate season due to injuries and the loss of experienced players. Luke Primus coached wonderfully under difficult circumstances. We thank Luke and wish him a positive and satisfying future in football. The Juniors have had a good learning season with excellent coaching, managership and parental support. Under 16s were finalists and Under 14s Premiers in the GJFL Division 3 competition.

Barwon Heads Senior Football Team finished the year with a great deal of optimism for 2013. We have a strong developing list, high in local content & with the return of Bobby Wallace, Jeremy Power and a few selective recruits we expect to play finals next season. Our coaching and support staff have been outstanding this season. Peter O’Connor has had a great impact in his first year on the playing group with his football knowledge and mentor style of coaching, the assistants being Damien Clarke, Gavin Smith,Bobby Wallace and Mick Boothey also provided excellent support. Special thanks to Erin, our match day osteopath and Gary Fisher our head trainer ……..and of course, Richard Kelly who has added a professional level of personal training not previously seen at the club & most likely not previously seen at BFL level. Although we missed the finals this season, considering the average age of our list, it was reasonable result with a huge upside. Several U/18 players tasted senior football, we had a few losses of less than 10 points after being in winning positions – which may have edged us into the finals if we had won and of course there were the huge wins we had against Ocean Grove in the ‘Battle of the Bridge’ and not forgetting the Ammo’s game at home in which we comfortably won. The Barwon Heads Netball Club finished the season well, with 3 teams competing in finals. The U/13 Section 1 team went on to play in the Grand Final against Ocean Grove. Unfortunately Ocean Grove was too strong on the day, but the girls had a great season, and with both section 1 & 2 competing in finals it certainly bodes well for the future of the Barwon Heads Netball Club. The A Grade side also competed in the first round of finals, going down in a heavily contested match to Modewarre. In 2012 we were hoping to take it one step further and proceed further into the finals, but with injuries once again striking us down at the end of the season this became impossible. The club welcomed back Mandy Ollis and Julia Mitchell to the line-up in 2012. Julia, another of our talented juniors, added a further depth to our strong defensive end. Our juniors coming through continue to add an exciting element to the A Grade squad. Tegan Hobbs and Olivia Young (BFNL team of the Year 2012) have once again proved that they are well deserved of their positions. Olivia Young was named in goals in the BFNL Team of the Year as voted by the all the BFNL coaches. A huge achievement by Olivia, up against very talented and experienced senior players. The Netball Club also had some success in the league Best and Fairest Awards. Congratulations to the following;

Our Senior side improved to finished fourth after the home and away season, but unfortunately lost the first final to Modewarre. There were some great signs throughout the year and the continued development of our younger players was certainly a highlight. The Reserves had a great year, finishing second after the home and away season, but unfortunately were also unable to win a finals game. The much anticipated introduction of the Colts Competition certainly lived up to all expectations, and the standard of football played each week by our players in their respective divisions was of the highest level in the State. Our Colts (1) Team were in Division One and acquitted themselves very well and finished fifth, and lost their first final to the eventual runners-up. Geelong Amateur Football and Netball Club had a disappointing year if we take on-field success as the benchmark. At the same time, we had a very productive year as a club. We made finals in a number of grades and that was positive, we also had 12 boys make representative teams. We also increased our junior programs - including AusKick and Netty Setty Go - by about 10% from an already high base.

Chairman’s Report Season 2012 has been a growing period for Newcomb Power both on and off the field. Development in all structured areas of the club has been evident. The committee under the leadership of President, Damian Mahoney, has become a close knit group with the one aim of serving the club for a long and successful period. Club volunteers have again worked tirelessly to support the club. This was most evident during the catering for the Bellarine Finals Series in which high numbers offered their time. The result was good service to customers and some welcome funds raised. The playing group whilst achieving limited success on the field has grown to the point that Newcomb Power now has a strong base is in place as the club looks to season 2013. Sponsors have increased in number and the quality of the business people involved will stand the club in good stead for many years to come. The naming of members for their achievements at any time is always a concern, as all volunteers have great importance. However to Ian Webb, a Past President, who has stepped down from the committee sincere thanks is passed on for his outstanding contribution. Dale Finn was named Clubperson for 2012 and everyone at the club endorsed him as a most deserving winner. Allan Jamieson continues to be loyal to the club and this year he captained the club and also won the best and fairest award by a clear margin. Newcomb Power wishes to congratulate Queenscliff Football Club on their outstanding season. Our club looks forward to some exciting times ahead as our junior program gains momentum and the recruiting staff reaches their goals. Go Power!

2012 Senior and Reserve sides struggled all year with depth being the major issue again. We were able to gain a number of good recruits before the season started but as it has been for the last 4 years we also lost a number of good players so we basically remained in the same position as we were last year. We had times during the year that we were competitive but not enough of them. The bright point of the year was the development of our juniors with Premierships in the 14s, 16s and Colts. This was a massive achievement for the club and should put us in good stead for the future. We are looking for a new coach in 2013 with the emphasis being on the development of this crop of juniors coming through and ensuring we are able to keep them at the club for many years to come. I believe we are in a great position as a club if we can do this and I am sure we can become much more competitive in the future which will not only be good for the club but also the league.

This year our Club had mixed success on the field. Our Senior Football team narrowly missing finals and our Colts team played two weeks of the finals. The netball teams were very competitive all season and its was pleasing to see five of our netball teams featuring in this years finals, with the 15U Division 1 team bringing home a premiership. Off the field, our local council was able to secure funding for an upgrade to our playing surface at the Central Reserve due to commence in the off season, which is a huge positive for our Club.

The 2012 season saw the consolidation of coaching staff but with a number of the more senior players being unavailable for various reasons the emphasis on youth continued. Although the season ended with only one win there was a marked improvement in players as the year progressed and once again a number of Colts players tasted Senior experience throughout the season and acquitted themselves well.

This year we are in to the 2nd year phase of a long term plan, where we want to improve the professionalism of the sporting club. Hopefully, we are gaining momentum in delivering this. We saw netball in an unusual situation with A grade not making the finals, however, several teams made finals in their respective sections. A big thank you to Carrie Rowe, who is stepping down this year as President of Netball section after three fantastic years.

It was an exciting year with the appointment of new senior coach Matthew Kershaw who quickly went about establishing an experienced coaching panel. This then led to a number of key player signings. On top of this the football club was able to secure a large sponsorship deal with Bisnella Pty Ltd which was one of the biggest single sponsorship deals outside the VFL and AFL. The year ended in disappointment just missing out on the finals by a game, but it has made the club hungrier of success in the up coming season. Lara Netball had a very positive year in 2012. With the appointment of Trish Plummer as our new Head Coach and some talented new recruits, with the understanding of the Lara culture, we had a significant “on court” improvement. Our success was acknowledged by Kristy Davis winning “GFL A Grade B & F” and Kerry Hamence and Sarah Sobey being joint winners of “Umpire of the Year” award. We were very saddened to lose an amazing Netball icon in Ellen Ladgrove but she will always be remembered by her perpetual trophy and she is now a Life Member of the Lara Sporting Club. I would also like to acknowledge the dedication and effort of our committee to give so many girls the opportunity to play netball at an elite level. The Leopold Football Netball Club would like to thank everyone for their invaluable contribution during season 2012, especially our large contingent of volunteers. Special thanks go to our players, coaching staff, officials, game day helpers and sponsors. Season 2012 has been the most successful for our club since joining the GFL in 1992, with the majority of our senior and junior teams across football and netball, playing finals, culminating in four club premierships and our A Grade netball playing off in a grand final for the first time. We thank everyone for their involvement, input and support during the season and now look forward to a bigger and better season in 2013.

We formed a youth girls side which was sucessful in winning their premiership Our Reserves played in the Grand Final again and lost to St Josephs whom we congratulate. Season 2012 saw the senior football team become very competitive and with a bit of luck, would have seen a few more good wins against good opposition on the board.. Hard work continues to be done to see the club be even more competitive in season 2013 and build on the rebuilding journey we started some 3 years ago. Netball too continues to be competitive and with a a strong recruiting drive in place, we will see netball go onto better things next season. A big thank you to all our valued sponsors as without your support, the club would struggle to exist. To our valued volunteers, your work is very much appreciated by all and we look forward to seeing you all again in 2013. To our award winners, congratulations on a personal note for your efforts in season 2012. Finally to the hard working committees of our two sections, we can’t thank you enough for the time and long efforts you put into making North Shore a great place to be.”

2012 was another huge season for South Barwon Football & Netball Club with 20 football and 20 netball teams competing. Premierships to the senior football team and the U/16C teams were backed up by six premierships in the netball section including the A Grade flag. Both sections won their respective club championships making it 8 in a row for the football section and 10 in a row for the netball section. The club’s other highlight is our much anticipated facilities upgrade that is nearing completion. The future is bright at South Barwon.

The junior section at our club has been a success in the fact that we have had boys in all areas representing the club in higher grades and seeing all improve to be better players and young men is something we look forward to in 2013.
Netball made an improved performance under new coach Nicole Richardson with 4 sides making the finals which has been something the girls have been searching for, for a long time. With both football and netball working hard over the summer we are looking to continued improvement throughout the club in 2013 and beyond,we can’t work this hard and not improve. Annual Report 2012
During 2012 the club has seen a reduction in revenue through our bar and canteen , something we must work harder to change and we realise that a lack of senior success and the Colts playing away from the club has had an impact .

After a slow start to the year and a similar games result as 2011 we are still upbeat about our position in the GFL , only receiving a belting on one occasion , we feel we were more than competitive in the senior section , on the back of some great performances of up to 8 junior boys . we are excited about our prospects going forward into 2013 under new coach Clinton Proctor.

Football & Netball Report
o St J
s
The Football Dept continued to move to the right direction improving our Coaching , Playing and medical structures along with our training methods which showed improved results across the board. Little League and Aus Kick numbers were up and the club is looking to grow this further over the next few years.
Annual Report 2012
The Netball Dept worked very hard to improve the whole program this season and whilst looking at ladder positions across the grades they did okay behind the scenes the platform is being built to close the gap on the other clubs by way of improved facilities and training programs. Off field will be a success mainly due to growing our sponsor base to a all time high in tight economic times. Also being able to operate some large functions throughout the year like the Season Launch Hosted by Nick Maxwell at the Olympic Room MCG in March this year attended by over 200 people and the Grand Final Lunch at the Pier which is now attended by over 700 people. The club is well served by it band of hardworking volunteers and we continue to grow the St Josephs brand and create a welcoming social environment for our Community. Annual Report 2012
St Mary’s Sporting Club is very excited and exceptionally proud of long-serving club member Erin Hoare who was this month named on the Melbourne Vixen’s list for 2013. This is a magnificent effort from a very loyal club person.

The senior netballers have had a wonderful year under the expert guidance of coaches Simone Segrave (A grade), Tracy Dunstan (B grade), Kate Slattery (C grade), Bernadette Boxer (D grade), Katrina Daws and Jess Rodgers (U19’s). Four senior teams made finals in 2012: A, C, D and 19s, with the D grade team successfully finishing their undefeated season with a premiership cup.
Netball Coaches
St M
2012 was a season of mixed results for the club. To finish 8th in the seniors was disappointing but the reserves and both Colts teams had terrific seasons. Congratulations to Bryce Vincent and the Colts A group for winning the first Premiership under this new format.

17/U GFNL – State Association Champions The finals day of the State Association Championships was held at the State Netball Hocky Centre on Sunday 24th of June. I would like to congratulate the 17/U GFNL Representative who successfully defended their title for a second year and were crowned the 2012 State Association Champions.
Annual Report 2012
The teams coach Sascha Veldhuis has this to say about the day and her teams wins: “The GFL 17 Under team are celebrating after winning back to back Association Championships on the weekend. After losing one match during the preliminary rounds by a goal, the girls showed their class by comfortably winning the semi final and following with a three goal win in over-time to secure the championship. The determination and effort put out on court, combined with patience and composure at exactly the right time was what made the difference. The goaling end featuring Ruby Horton and Jess Leader was simply unstoppable all day, while at the defensive end, the strength and work ethic on display from Georgette Paatsch and Victoria Honner wore opposition teams down. The centre court trio of Demi Grant, Emily Murfitt and Lucy Bishop showed speed and skill all day, in any combination played. The team was ably backed up by Rosie Shannahan, Naomi Edwards and Jemma Schaftenaar (who was ill but still made the trip to support the girls). With 4 minutes to go in overtime the scores remained level, but the girls fought hard - it was clear to all watching that they desperately wanted the win and as such, executed perfectly under extreme pressure.” Grand Final Result: Geelong FNL : 23 Goulburn Valley: 20 I would like to thank Sascha for her ongoing commitment to this team. She has dedicated many hours to training the players and I know that players
42
feel very honoured and proud to play under such a fantastic coach. I would also like to say thank-you to Sally Bishop for taking on the role as Team Manager and providing unwavering support to Sascha throughout the tournament and in the lead up. Congratulations to all players, coaches, team managers and supporters on a fantastic tournament. Our 15/U 2012 representative side were successful in making the finals on Sunday but unfortunately went down to Waverly City NA in the semi final by 7 goals. The team only lost one game in the qualifying rounds but unfortunately went down to a much stronger outfit in Waverly in the semi final. Our open Representative team were unlucky not to play finals only missing out by 2.41%. Once again I would like to thank Simone Segrave for coaching the team in 2012. Also to Ash Salter and Prue Kenny who answered the call on Saturday afternoon to replace injured players, thank-you so much for giving up your Sunday and showing such pride to represent your league. It is disappointing that we were not able to bring home back to back trophies this year but I have no doubt that the GFNL will win back the title in 2013. BFNL Representative Team Report Unfortunately the Open and 17/U Teams missed out on playing finals on Sunday due to percentage. The open team were so close only losing 2 of their 7 qualifying round games to miss out on a finals berth. I would like to thank all the players in our open team for their commitment and support of the Representative Team this year. We had a great mix of players, some had played rep netball many times before for others it was their first time being senior or juniors. The team worked extremely well together and I know Stacey Benny our Open Coach had a tough time deciding on final combinations due to the girls strong performances. I would
like to acknowledge Jackie Riddle from Modewarre who answered a call on Saturday Night to play after a horrible injury to Hannah Kennedy from Drysdale was able to sort out babysitting at short notice and give up her Sunday to come and play and support the girls. It would be remiss of me not to thank the coach of our Open Team Stacey Benney from Anglesea. It is always difficult putting together combinations of players from different teams, however Stacey did a great job over a short period of time and I know the girls are thankful for her support and dedication to the team. Our 17/u Representative team was also so close to making the finals after only 1 loss and a draw throughout the qualifying rounds. The players and coaches were so disappointed after convincing beating Bendigo FL in the first round who then ended up playing semi finals. The 17/U rep players have asked me to say a HUGE thankyou to their coach Leah Wilson and Assistant Coach Melanie Savage. The girls absolutely loved all their training session and have learnt so much from the small amount of time they have had under Leah and Mel. I personally would like to thank these ladies for their contribution to our representative team program and hope that they will continue this in 2013. Unfortunately our 15/U team struggled with injuries and unavailability of players over the weekend. The girls positive attitude and dedication was great to see. I would like to thank Brooke Davis their coach for the huge amount of time she has put into the training and development of these players. Brooke has been a coach for our representative teams for the last 3 years and given up a huge amount of her time to provide these players with the opportunity to play and train at the higher level. Thank-you Brooke and once again we hope to have you back on board for 2013.
