FROM THE FOOTBALL NETBALL GEELONG DESK
Trainers needed for Masters Games The 14th Australian Masters Games are set to take place in Geelong between October 5 and 12 this year. This iconic Australian event continues to provide a unique sports festival atmosphere where more than 10,000 mature age athletes (30-plus in most cases), across 54 sports can come together and celebrate all that is great about sport and friendly competition. The organisers of the games require a team of qualified and experienced sports trainers to provide first aid and treatment to participants, workforce and spectators. Sports trainers will be responsible for conducting an initial assessment on an
athlete’s injury and provide emergency or continued care and referral for further diagnosis and treatment providing athletes with best practice care and support. This will include completing injury reports and returning them to the Games Office. Applications are now open for sports trainers. For more information, contact Danielle McDougall, Administration and Sports Care Program, Officer Australian Masters Games, phone 4242-4304 or email amg. sportcare@unisport.com.au.

A MESSAGE FROM AFL VICTORIA
V/Line Umpire Academy Program Every weekend at country grounds across Victoria, the men and women with whistles and flags in hand play a pivotal role in making local football what it is. Ensuring the development of the next generation of umpires is at the very heart of keeping country football the great social and community event it is for everyone involved, from players, officials and of course the spectators. Because of the key role umpires play, each year WorkSafe AFL Victoria Country’s Umpiring Department invites a group of talented whistle blowers to participate in the V/Line Umpire Academy Program. Invitations are sent to young developing field, boundary and goal umpires to participate in Junior Football Programs, as well to more experienced umpires from local associations that are then considered for selection in a wide-range of umpiring appointments. In 2013 the V/Line Umpire Academies are located at: • Camperdown/Terang • Ballarat/Geelong • Morwell/Churchill • Berwick/Dandenong • Albury/Wangaratta • Shepparton/Echuca • Horsham • Bendigo • Mildura The location for each academy was determined in the latter part of last year and at pre-Christmas sessions, summer training programs are distributed to the new members and the current fitness levels are determined.
Post-Christmas – usually in mid-February – the Academy Program resumes with fitness levels of all participants measured once again. Coaching sessions at the Academy sessions include on-track coaching with discipline-specific coaching groups and also indoor-coaching sessions that range from umpiring philosophies, personal goal-setting, the completion of self-development plans and an outline of what the year ahead will include. Active participants of the AFL National UmpireCoach Professional Development Program play an important role in the delivery of the Academy sessions and conduct skill-based coaching sessions where the participants are exposed to ‘a different voice’ where the expectations of the performances are extremely high. This year members of the Academy have thrived in the opportunities the program offers, with all umpiring appointments for the 2013 V/Line Cup (U15 country representative carnival) and AFL Victoria’s 2013 U16 Championships being active participants in the V/Line Umpire Academy Program. The Academy Program also provided 230 of the 248 umpires for last month’s WorkSafe Country Championships. In addition to these achievements, 12 umpires have been invited to umpire attend the three WorkSafe AFL Victoria Country versus Victorian Amateur Football Association games on Sunday, July 7. SPIRIT OF SPORT AWARD
Colts players rewarded Colts footballers Jesse Phillips (Belmont Lions) and Jak Evans (Queenscliff) are the most recent winners of the Spirit of Sport Award. Jesse and Jak received their weekly awards before their games last round. The Spirit of Sport Award is conducted in conjunction with St Laurence and Victoria Police and aims to target behavioural standards in sport by encouraging and rewarding fair play, sportsmanship and mutual respect among team mates and competitors. At each Colts football and Under 17 netball game, the umpires choose the three most prominent players from each competing team and award them points out of five for performance and points out of 10 for the spirit in which they played the game.
2013 weekly winners:
Round 1: Joshua Demunari (Lara), Zac Sheahan (Newtown & Chilwell) and Joshua Matsubara (Leopold); Meg Blood (St Mary’s). Round 2: Abbey Middleton (Leopold). Round 3: Jackson O’Hanlon (Modewarre) and Sara Devine (St Joseph’s). Round 4: Xavier Carew (St Joseph’s), Kody Spokes (Colac) and Georgia Finn (Colac). Round 5: Tuan Tran (St Albans) and Elly Ryan (Lara). Round 6: Brittany Christy (Grovedale) and Liam Vagg (Portarlington). Round 7: Georgina Barclay (Newtown & Chilwell) and Kayne Coulson (North Geelong). Round 8: Jesse Phillips (Belmont Lions) and Jak Evans (Queenscliff).
The player who scores the most points for that round is recognised for their performance with the weekly Blue Ribbon Foundation Medal and certificate. A player can only win the weekly medal once during the season, but the points accumulate over the home and away season and the player with the most points following the final round will be declared the Spirit of Sport Player of the Year. They will be presented with the Blue Ribbon Foundation Medal, framed with a citation certificate. Winners in the Colts competition will come from Bellarine, Geelong and Geelong & District clubs.
Jesse Phillips (Belmont Lions) and Jak Evans (Queenscliff).

AT THE GRILL with Milky Mahoney
A good, long weekend I hope you enjoyed the week without my input. I got caught out with the short week. Anyway, I had a really interesting long weekend. I caught up with some old team mates at a joint function between Geelong West and Ammos. I really enjoy footy functions and quite seriously don’t go to enough of them. I was made feel really welcome by both clubs. Us old Ammos boys were bigger, better, stronger than what really took place. It’s amazing what a difference a couple of frothies makes. The Geelong West gang are a great bunch with legends like Kevin Hannan, Youngie, Fenno, Freddie. Unfortunately there was also the president, Danny O’Leary, the one-pot screamer. I also had a really good chat to Anthony Chirnside and his two brothers from Warrnambool. They are a very close family and the younger brothers idolise Anthony for some of the best reasons - big brother and father figure. They are a sensational gang. Look out the rest of the GFL if they can land the little brothers into the West camp. Over the long weekend, Ronnie Watt celebrated a birthday and whether it was a coincidence or not, there was a massive turnout of the whole North Shore playing group at the Cremorne. I hear Ronnie’s kids gave him a voucher for sky diving for his birthday and while he’s not keen on using it, North Shore secretary Sherryn Duff is already talking about turning it into a fundraiser for the Seagulls. Not sure the skydiving company would be keen to land at Windsor Park.
Past legends return St Joseph’s twos have had a couple of past legends pull on the jumper. This week I spotted Butch Shaw and Sean Simpson. I watched as Simmo sold some candy and danced around an opponent, but I’m told the highlight came later in the game when Simmo did a Percy Jones and missed the footy when having a shot at goal. I bet it wasn’t even mentioned at the bar later!
Umpiring puzzle I’m still concerned by fit umpires out in the middle not umpiring. Are they using the Aussie cricketers rotation system? Well it didn’t work for them either! A couple of coaches have spoken to me about just how many free kicks are being paid. The AFL is down by 30 per cent, GFL continues to rise.
Predictions can change Part of my last column that didn’t make to the Record on time was my declaration that the five Will Not Change. Lucky nobody got to see that. So in the last two weeks what has changed, Geelong West dropped a game they probably shouldn’t have, but Leopold was always going to beat someone. St Albans lost the last two, Grovedale fell away against Newtown but bounced back against Lara. The Lara Cats just got past Joeys then smashed by Grovey. South Barwon, Newtown and Bell Park are certainties; Grovedale and Lara are in charge of their own destiny. St Mary’s has a very interesting four weeks, Geelong West is getting some players back and must beat all sides outside the five and at least one in the five. Colac and St Albans need a couple of serious scalps and a lot of luck. Colac has five home games and away games against two sides below; St Albans have the same number of home games but have a tougher draw.
This week Bell Park hosts the in-form Grovedale and the battle of the big men should be a beauty, Vale against Abbott. Can Razga hold Paulke and who will get Erskine, Johnson or McSparron? And don’t forget Sheringham, Cuthill, Batchelor and the Bucovaz brothers for Bell Park against Donohue, Barrett, Bell-Warren and Deans - what a cracking contest. Colac must make it as uncomfortable for Newtown as possible and make the Central Reserve a place all GFL sides hate with a passion. North Shore will see this week as a chance to score its first win, Leopold has other thoughts. I’m sure Joeys will be at their competitive best, but they are running out of numbers and South Barwon at home is not where you want to be in that shape. St Albans and Geelong West have one of the eight-point games for this round - either side will find it really tough from here, particularly St Albans. The other eight-pointer is St Mary’s and Lara. Lara has a chance to send a message that last week was a blimp on the radar, St Mary’s must win and the finals door remains open. Come Saturday night, the five could be set or it could still include eight combatants, GFL is alive and well. Contact me milkymahoney@hotmail.com or @milkymahoney on Twitter

IN THE ROOMS with Alex Tigani and Paddy Slack
Top ruckmen to battle at Hamlyn Park Paddy Slack: Round 9 saw the stronger sides of the competition overpowering weaker teams with a round full of percentage boosting wins. Good news came out during the week that Lara’s James Allan in fact did not do his ACL as suspected and will be back in 6-8 weeks, which is great news for the Cats. Alex Tigani: Though the news, which was released days after our deadline, was great for Lara fans they would be unable to capitalise on Saturday in its side’s loss to Grovedale.
PS: The Tigers’ organised defence limited the Cats to just four goals for the game and league-leading goalkicker Shaydon Bloomfield to just the one. Bell Park will host Grovedale today following the Tigers “best win for the year” according to Coach Grant Tanner. Will Grovedale hold second spot today or will the Dragons take their place?
AT: I’ve been asking myself that question all week as I’ll be heading to the Hamlyn Park today. In a battle of the league’s top two ruckmen (Zane Vail and Ryan Abbott) I’m going with the Dragons who remain undefeated at home so far this season. Speaking of the undefeated, can the Swans record win number 19 on the trot?
PS: Coming off a 12-goal loss to Bell Park, I can’t see Joey’s competing with South Barwon today. To the disappointment of both Colac and South Barwon spectators last week, Matthew Scarlett did not play, but will hopefully line up for the Swans today. Colac managed to obtain a one-goal lead at half time against the undefeated South Barwon, how do you think they’ll go against fourth placed Newtown today? AT: If it’s anything like last year’s match, where Newtown & Chilwell came from behind thanks to a controversial free kick, we’re in for a show! The Eagles should be able to fly back to their nest with the four points. Sadly, last week I witnessed the Seagulls’ wings clipped by the Roosters.
PS: It was the Roosters’ first win away from home. After St Albans suffered a brutal 10-goal loss to your boys last week, do you think the Roosters can make it their second away win for the year against the Saints today? AT: St Albans (along with Grovedale) has been a tough side to tip this year. I can’t help but agree with their assistant Coach Rory Nicol that there is too much of a gap between their veterans and youth. With that in mind, the Roosters may hold onto seventh place with a small win.
PS: Matthew Hebbard and Romain Grenville (St Mary’s) both booted four goals each, which puts them both on the league’s leading goalkickers board, with Hebbard on 27 for the year and Grenville on 28. Lara defenders will have to limit their impact on the scoreboard today in order to bounce back with a win. This may possibly be a season defining match for both sides, who are you tipping and by how much?
AT: This match is a must-win for the Cats, who are very fortunate to have their 1-2 record following the Interleague bye. St Mary’s had the edge over the Cats in their last two encounters, so I’m going to have to hand them my tip, only by a goal. The return of Ash McLean couldn’t have come any later for the Seagulls; do you give them any chance in the bottom-of-the-table clash?
PS: It’s pretty hard to back the Seagulls following last week’s performance and that their last seven games have been 100-plus point losses. But I am tipping a close game and possibly see Leopold jump to tenth spot. AT: Finally, the most important question of the day - when will we see you back on the field in the Colts competition? PS: That’ll be tomorrow against Torquay at Queens Park. The P.Slack show starts at 10am!

THE WHISTLE BLOWER
Boots getting good use Well the real football weather is upon us and many umpires have had to wear football boots to keep upright through the centre of many grounds. I must say I’m getting my money’s worth out the white footy boot specials I picked up. I am at $3.33 per boot wear per game at the moment and my feet are still staying dry. It has been a bit cool on the track as well, plenty of rain coats, skins, beanies and gloves have been observed. The trivia night was last weekend was a huge success, battled out over seven rounds by 10 teams.
a huge goal umpiring appointment coming up very soon and he just wanted to blow out the cobwebs.
Family Round I congratulated Callum Binyon on his senior debut a couple of weeks back. I actually ran with him along with his dad in The Family round. For a second gamer, Callum was like he had been doing it for years. Well done. Back to the family round, some other family members who umpired together were: McMahons, Gray’s and Grossmans at Barwon Heads; the Grahams at Anakie; Hamiltons at Geelong West; and the Dixons at Werribee.
Mark Osborne did a superb job as MC, reading out the questions and revealing the answers. The trivia questions were put together by Rob Steel and he was driving the questions on the screen.
In the juniors, the Gahans were at Ocean Grove. Hope you all enjoyed the family round.
Paul Trotter was Rob’s side kick, allocating the scores. Andrew Guy was the scribe for the evening, writing the scores up on the whiteboard. It was a great mix of trivia, sport, general knowledge, movies, music etc.
Director of Umpiring Scott McLeod not only looks after operations at Grovedale Secondary College, he is now also in charge of the Year 9 students. Thanks for that info Davin.
The last round was an absolute pearler; you had to match a word for a group of animals. Lyrebirds was the first? Ossie had a ball reading out the answers for this set of questions. The Riewolts, comprising of a couple of coaching panel members and their team members was highlighted as not the correct answer. For example, for Owls the Reiwoldts went with Hooters, great answer but not correct; for Crows, they went with A Kill, on the right track but it is a murder. Other animal groups listed were wombats, crocodiles, lizards, dolphins and a few more, way too difficult for me. The scores, the Riewoldts didn’t end up last (they were second last). Last were the Destroyers, the Riewoldts, the Sadies, the Landy Legends (I help these guys with a few answers), Winning at our own pace. Equal third were Trendsetters and Tryhards, runners-up were We Don’t Need Two Tables and taking home the glory was Up the Guts. (Well I suppose we do need to let the chairman and treasurer win something for the year.)
Umpire Exchange Weekend this week, so you might week some different uniforms in some of the games on field, boundary and goal umpires.
Coming up Life Members Evening at Buckley’s on Tuesday, July 9.RSVP to Carl or Steve Allinson. See you back at the rooms tonight to meet with the umpires visiting on exchange to the GFUL.

Special thanks to the goalies for putting on the trivia, Peter Schilder as the bag man and Alan Grant for running around doing all those little jobs that Mark Osborne created. I did ask goal umpire coach Alan Grant about his theory with doing a couple of games in the goals. He assures me he has

GFNL ROUND 10 PREVIEW with Alex Tigani V
Bell Park v Grovedale
In brief: Grovedale’s goal-kicking trio Jordan Erskine (38), Adam Donohue (19) and Marcus Smith (19) may meet its match in the Dragons Stephen Paulke, Will Sloss and Kristian Bucovaz, who have all shown fantastic form post Interleague-round. Therefore, this second versus third clash will more than likely be determined by the two side’s leading ruckmen. Putting aside names such as Street, Neurath, Veale (due to forward line roles) and Banjanin (VFL); Ryan Abbott and Zane Vail look set to battle for the league’s number one mantle. Interestingly, the Dragons have remained undefeated at home since Round 18, 2012.
TIP: Bell Park by 11 points. V
Colac v Newtown & Chilwell
In brief: The Tigers fought hard to the take lead against the reigning premier at the main break last week, however would be unable to record a third win in as many weeks come full time. The Eagles, on the other hand, continued to dominate at the Elderslie Reserve, defeating St Albans by 60 points in a match that saw Adam Healy (Sandhurst recruit) make his red and black debut. Though five of these two sides’ last seven encounters have been decided by 20 points or less, Colac has not been able to overrun its OCR fm rival since Round 18, 2010.
TIP: Newtown & Chilwell by 19 points. V
Leopold v North Shore
In brief: The Lions came awfully close to securing a second consecutive win against St Mary’s last week, however, it would be highly unlikely if today’s match doesn’t carry Steve Clark’s men out of the bottom two. Ryan Dahlhaus returned to his best last week while Jai Thompson looks set to be the early favourite for the Lions best and fairest following another best on ground performance. The Seagulls look forward to the (likely) return of defender Ash Mclean while coach Peter Riccardi predicts that VFL star Nathan Peoples may also return after the bye.
TIP: Leopold by 44 points.
16 2013 Official Football Geelong Record
V
South Barwon v St Joseph’s
In brief: South Barwon’s dominance continues to amaze supporters of the league. As the Swans prepare to match a side situated outside of the top five for the fifth week in a row, they’ll be aiming for a 10th consecutive win at home and 19th consecutive overall. The Swans will also hope to equal its best start to a season since sitting 10-0 after commencing the second half of the 2011 season. As defender Matthew Scarlett returns back into the line-up, his (other) junior club, St Joseph’s, may now need to produce a miracle to end its current seven-match losing streak.
TIP: South Barwon by 39 points. V
St Albans v Geelong West St Peters
In brief: The Roosters rebounded from its shock loss to the Lions to the tune of 119-points at the Windsor Park last week, in a match that saw ball winner Scott Frangos nail six goals. However the Roosters have been unable to string two wins together since Round 2, losing two of their three away games by an average margin of 90 points. St Albans must prevent a repeat of the downfall it showcased at the second half of last season, resulting in nine consecutive defeats. The Supersaints also now have a small September opportunity, not having to play a top five side until Round 15.
TIP: St Albans by 1 (the home ground advantage tickles my fancy). V
St Mary’s v Lara
In brief: There’s no doubt that Grovedale, Bell Park and Newtown & Chilwell supporters will be rallying behind St Mary’s today to detach Lara from top-three contention. St Mary’s have now swept their opening fortnight of the season under the rug after recording five wins these last seven weeks by an average margin of 48-points. Lara will hope to limit the Saints entry, debuting WRFL recruit Daniel Riosa. The Hoppers Crossing defender was named in the best players 10 times last year, before his Warriors side was eliminated by eventual grand finalist Spotswood.
TIP: St Mary’s by 6 points. www.footballgeelong.com.au 17

BELL PARK

We’re looking forward to the second half of the season and will be truly tested facing the top two teams in the next two weeks. We welcome Grovedale today and wish all teams a healthy competition.
Raffle a success too. Everyone who purchased a ticket, Cam Green, Rochelle Clark, Tony Evans, Kym Batchelor, Fiona Chisholm, Leigh Vail, and the staff at Bell Park Social Clubrooms for assisting on the day.
FOOTBALL: Wins are always welcome away from home, especially at
Canteen helpers: We’re continually looking for more helpers on match day and for junior matches. Please see John, Michelle or Leigh if you can assist, especially today while the Ladies Day is on in the Social Clubrooms.
St Joseph’s. Pleasingly, our boys shone, along with the sun, on such a beautiful day and are now in the top three on the ladder. In the Seniors, while the number of scoring shots, 36 to 14, indicated a huge margin, it was not to be due to inaccuracy. It was a special triumph to see the fellas begin to gel like a real team and we hope to see it continue strongly in the next two weeks. We have a few players to come back, which along with pressure from the Reserves solid performances, all goes well for a sound second half to the season. Our co-coach Tim Sheringham led the way after a week’s rest and was ably supported by Zane Vail, Mitch Cuthill and Michael Bright in the centre along with backmen, Ben Johnson, Rowan McSparron, Steve Brown and Daniel Pigott. Good performances by the young group are beginning to make life difficult for the selectors; always a good place to be. The Reserves staged a good fourth quarter comeback after the opposition took it right up to us. The big men, Sam Connelly and Tom Hanlon, spurred us on as we kicked five goals one behind in the last quarter. The Colts played at home against a formidable opposition. They showed great improvement, getting players back from injury and also beginning to gel as a team! Go Dragons! A fantastic Casino Royale/Major Auction was held last Saturday night , June 15 at the Geelong Club. Thanks to all those involved in its organisation: Teresa Hanlon, Toni Hefford, Michelle Gerdtz, Jeff Jarvis, Kev Purcell and our brilliant Auctioneer Andrew Mapleson. We must thank all those involved in making the Major Reverse Draw
Dragon Den: Members please join past player, Lachlan ‘Barge’ Kennedy at 1pm in the LEGENDS ROOM (next to canteen) for discounted drinks while we play Grovedale today. Upcoming Social Events: Ladies Day TODAY at 1.30pm in the Bell Park Social Clubrooms, during our home game against Grovedale. Please pay $45 pp to Teresa Hanlon. Our Ladies Day will of course replace our WAGS afternoon tea with Toni Hefford. Our WAGS afternoon tea will return Round 12, next home game against Leopold on July 13.
Did you know? Today we celebrate Ben Armstrong’s (No 15) 250th senior game. Ben has come up through the juniors for Bell Park and played in the Geelong Falcons also. He played one Reserves game, coached by Andrew Mapleson, before making his senior debut. Since his debut he has played in six grand finals including the draw in 2003, winning two premierships, 2003 and 2011. He has played in multiple Interleague sides, captained the Dragons numerous times, won numerous Club Best and Fairest awards throughout juniors and seniors, represented Vic Country and today is the Co-Coach of the Bell Park Football Club. Congratulations on a wonderful decorated career so far and all the best for the remainder of your future at Bell Park Football Club and beyond.

This week we travel to Hamlyn Park to take on Bell Park in what is always a tough encounter. Good luck to all our football and netball teams and congratulations to Dev Eddy who played his 50th game last weekend and Mick McNeel who plays his 50th game today.
We are fortunate to have a great group of sponsors supporting our club and last weekend we held our annual sponsors lunch which gave us the opportunity to show them just how much we appreciate all they do for us. A great afternoon was had by all.
It was a great effort from our Senior team against Lara last week. The boys played a fantastic brand of tough, uncompromising footy and were very happy to walk away with the four points.
This week we acknowledge our bronze sponsors – Hall Builders, Academy Safety, Geelong Security Doors, Short Attention, Anytime Fitness, Vast Interiors, Odyssey Tavern, Tutt Bryant Hire, Champion Sportswear, Begley Motors, Barrett Painting, Apco Service Station Waurn Ponds, Geelong & Colac Orthodontics and Red Rooster.
Our Reserves came up short after being in a winnable position at three-quarter time. The boys have been playing good footy for parts of games, but need to be more consistent over four quarters. Our Colts A side had a strong win against Lara after gaining a break early in the game and our Colts B side had a convincing victory against Ocean Grove. Paul, Fitzy and Pete have the boys playing some great team first footy. Keep up the good work lads.
Volunteers of the Week – This week we thank the senior players who have helped out at junior training this season. The feedback we have received from the young lads, their parents and coaches has been outstanding. Thanks to all the guys who have taken time out to assist. It is well worth the effort. For anything you need to know about the club, like us on Facebook - Grovedale Tigers – or check out our website at www.grovedaletigers.com.au

COLAC What a great game of footy we watched last week. Although the Tigers were defeated, we showed that we can match it with the best and whilst we did fall away in the second half there was plenty to take out of that performance. Today we face another top side in Newtown at the Central Reserve. We all know last time we played the Eagles they jumped us early and we were unable to catch up with them for the rest of the day. Today we will look to put four consistent quarters together and let’s hope we can take a big scalp. Whilst it wasn’t a great day last week as far as wins were concerned, we must praise the efforts of our Colts team who are a little undermanned at the moment. The young Tigers really took it up to the Swans and hopefully over the next few weeks we will see a few of the boys back and we are sure that they will make a run for the finals. Our Under 14 team had a great win last Saturday, they might start early but it is well worth getting along and having a look at these young tigers play, they play a great brand of footy and they are they future of our club. It will be an interesting day at the netball again today, like their male counterparts our girls are improving each game and with a little luck we can cause a few upsets today. Well
colacfc.vcfl.com.au done to our lower grades who had some very good wins last week. We have consolidated some of our places in the top five and let’s hope our A Grade girls can put themselves in a position to threaten for the finals. Tonight we will be having a bit of a social night in the club rooms, plenty of music and plenty of fun to be had so stick around and join in, as we know it is always a good night at the club and we love to see our families and friends turn up and have a great time. Reverse Raffle tickets need to be returned before next Sunday’s Draw. Make sure if you have tickets that they are all sold and don’t leave it until the last minute. Get your tickets back to Ray today or at least let him know that you have sold them. If you haven’t yet got a ticket, see Ray or any player remember to get a syndicate together it is always a great day and it will be drawn on next Sunday June 30. Calcutta winner’s last game was the Mitchell Club with the Magoo Syndicate taking the honours, well done to all concerned. Don’t forget Counter Teas on Thursday Nights so get in and get amongst it, a great feed and they are well priced. Go Colac KFC Tigers.

Today we welcome travel to Colac, in another important game. Colac was extremely competitive last week and appears to have turned its season around. We always have excellent games against each other and this should be no different.
the result was fitting in the end as they led all day. Today they face the top side Leopold and will need to be at their best to continue their good form to win. Best were: Jacob Ngawati, Hamish Barclay and Kieran McNally.
Last week the Seniors controlled the game all day after a good start. Apart from some poor kicking for goal our multi function forward line operated well and kicked our highest score for the season so far. Bernie Lynch once again showed his strength and experience up back with solid support.
A Grade netball won again against solid opposition. They are rotating some players and many girls are gaining experience in this level. B Grade won convincingly to keep their winning run going, today they face a strong Colac B team. C Grade was once again a winner and has kept on improving all year. Good players were many once again and we were also able to Many more win are theirs while we hope D Grade, whom are introduce Adam Healy to Senior football. Best players Bernie still struggling, will regain some confidence. Lynch, Jai Sheahan and Matt McMahon. Last Saturday was our successful Ladies Day and we give The Reserves were very disappointing in their loss to St Albans, after taking many steps forward in recent games this was a big step backwards. Led early but were headed and were unable to bridge the final gap. Consistency they must obtain and today’s game gives them a chance for redemption. Best were Matt Rollo, Mick Grant and David Nye.
a big thank you to the St Albans Netball division for their movement of games to earlier timeslots to enable our players to attend. It was much appreciated by them. On a social note Reverse Raffle is on June 30, tickets will be out soon, please help sell to make this day a success.

LEOPOLD Today the club hosts our sponsors for our annual Sponsors Luncheon, which we hope you enjoy the day and you can see that the contribution you make to our club is greatly appreciated and utilised throughout the many facets of our club. Without your support, the club would not be able to participate at the high level required to be a part of the GFL, so we thank you for this support and trust that we can count on it for many years to come. We also extend our welcome to the North Shore Football Club. On the football front, we hope to put on a good showing for you today, having come close last weekend against St Mary’s. We were in a winning position at threequarter time, but were overrun in the last quarter. Whilst we are unable to be at full strength for any stage this year due to season long injuries, today we will get a few back which takes us that one step closer towards having our best side on the ground. We regularly have four to five changes each week to our senior team, so it is hoped that we can soon get some continuity soon which will certainly help our consistency. The Reserves put up a really good showing last week and they will be determined to continue that form into this weekend. Both of our Colts teams had wins last
leopoldlions.com.au week, and it was said that the half-time address from Dave Dowd to his team made our senior coach look like a puppy. It seems that Otis’ “enthusiasm” has worn off on Dowdy. It worked, with his boys kicking the last couple to get over the line. Our netballers continue on their winning ways. A strong 14-goal win in the As against fellow top three team in St Mary’s capped off a highly successful day for our netballers last weekend. It is a shame that our As have the week off as we would encourage our sponsors to get over to the netball today for a look, but you can still see some high quality netball from the rest of our girls, just get over there early as they will probably be finished by 1pm. On the social scene, the Auction night is fast approaching so keep an eye out for details of the night. We ask all involved with the club to have a think about potential items for the night, as there will be a major auction and an accompanying silent auction. This has been our major fundraiser for the year, so we cannot stress enough how important that we have everyone contributing to the night. July 13 after the away game to Bell Park is the date, and it will be at the clubrooms. Go Polders!

SOUTH BARWON A big welcome to our friends from St Joseph’s as we start the second half of the home and away season. Sitting 9-zip is possibly our greatest start to a season ever but that doesn’t make winning any easier. The challenge for the Swans is to maintain the momentum and finish the season on the same rung of the ladder that we currently occupy.

Our annual Volunteers Night is on Thursday, July 4 commencing at 6.30pm with pizzas and drinks provided. It’s a small way whereby we can thank all our volunteers who give so much towards making this club the success that it is. So, if you help out around the ground, with the juniors, netball, in the canteen or wherever please turn up and be rewarded.
Today we are having a 25 year reunion of the Belmont Reserves and Under 18 premiership teams of 1987/88. There is an old saying – “the older I get, the better I was” – so, after 25 years we should Don’t forget - JD Superdraw Day is planned for Sunday, July 14 at have a room full of champions today. Today we set off to play over the Barwon River against the South Barwon Football and Netball club and we are hoping to have success today – best of luck to all our netball and football teams The Seniors were disappointly defeated by 72 points against Bell Park last Saturday. Whilst the boys’ effort cannot be questioned, their skills left a lot to be desired unfortunately. Good teams will make you pay for your mistakes and Bell Park collected. Best players were Lachlan Howe, Rhys Hultgren, Hayden Foss, Lucky Stankovic and Andrew ‘Briefy’ Casey. A big shout out to Jono Casey to get well soon from all at SJFandN Club after a serious injury he incurred last weekend resulting in a couple of operations and a few days stay in hospital – get around him lads! The 12 o’clock team lost by two goals in a very tight affair. The boys were out gunned in the last quarter, although as usual they never gave up. Best players were Lachie McDowell, Matt King, Mitch Merino, ‘Butch’ Shaw, Rory Nolan and Coach Josh Bell. The Colts went down by 10 points in a hard-fought game against Torquay. Best were Luke McCoy, James Hickey, Nick Balic and Tyson West. Keep training hard boys and the effort will be rewarded on match day. A great day was had by all who attended our 40th birthday lunch last Saturday where the first year of the club’s footballers were recognised and acknowledge with a framed certificate – a big thank you to Alex and Jen Semianiw for all their work behind the scenes organising the event and to John McKinnon for his work promoting and organising the players/ supporters to attend. It was great to see so many people in the rooms after the game both past players as well as the current playing group.
Social notes Don’t forget our junior fundraiser on Friday, July 12 - A Day at the Races. $80 per head which includes entry into the course, race book, two-course meal and drinks included and also a 12-month membership to Geelong Racing Club – great value and a great day out. Please see Adrian Buckley, Ross McLachlan or Janet Edwards for further details as tickets are selling fast! Please keep Sunday, July 21 free in your social calendar as we have one of our major fundraisers in our Major Raffle Day. $50 per ticket which includes finger food and drinks for two hours and then bar prices will apply from 3pm – we also will be having live music from 3 pm to 7 pm with ‘Pip Joyce’ (lead guitarist of the Glenn Shorrock Band). Please see Russell Baker, Ross Hultgren, Adrian Buckley John McKinnon or Janine Nicholls for further details.
Thursday night meals We are having huge success with our Thursday Night meals with Slim and Mardi Hill providing a great meal (no cooking ladies). Please continue to support them even on these chilly nights as our rooms are nice and warm. For any further information please don’t forget to check our website www. stjoeys.com or like/comment on our facebook page. Today we would like to acknowledge some of our bronze sponsors in The Edge Bar and Cafe, A and G Engineering, J.T Dixon, Chicken Ranch, Hyde Building Surveyors and Panozzo Builders.

This week we welcome Geelong West St Peters to St Albans Reserve.
Everybody had a great night and I would assume there were a few sore heads on Sunday morning (or afternoon).
The Seniors will be looking to redeem themselves after a disappointing loss last week to Newtown. Even though we kicked one of our highest scores for the season, too many easy goals going the other way cost us dearly. Best players were Ben Evans, Luke Williams, Clint Proctor, Jackson Burke, Cameron Hall and Josh Wilson.
Also, today is Ladies Day during the match and kicks off at noon. Tickets are still available and will cost $30 at the door and includes lunch and supper. Following the match will be the “Mr St Albans” players review so to all those hard working ladies of the club and the equally important players and supporters partners get along and have an enjoyable day and night.
In the seconds, after a great four-quarter effort the boys were able to chalk up their second win for the season and in doing so we may have unearthed a new full forward of the future. Best players were A.J. Graham, Jack Beardsell, Heath Robbins, Cain McFarlane, Eugene Stanciu and Brendan Looney. In the Colts, after a competitive first half we were unable to match it with a slick Geelong Amateur team. Best players were Darcy McFarlane, Dylan McInnes, Jack Whatnall, Tom Caudullo, Jake Watson-Serle and Sam Muir. On a social note, congratulations must go to all of those involved in putting together last week’s St Albans Ball. Once again the rooms looked great, the music was fantastic and the night was again the social highlight of the season.
A little more information on July 6, the stand alone game against St Mary’s where we will be having a major fundraising lunch to raise funds for the Ted Whitten Foundation. The day will kick off at noon and tables of 8 are now available. Our guest speaker is ex-Hawthorn great and their Team of the Century Full Forward Peter Hudson. Tickets will be $50 per person and includes free entry to the game, a three-course lunch and complimentary drink on arrival. Tickets are now available through Michael Cobb or Trevor Robbins. Good luck to all football and netball teams and “GO SUPERSAINTS” Sponsors of the Week: Moolap Marine, Econopave, Fortunato Group.

The winter chill made itself known at Windsor Reserve today when the Roosters took on North Shore. Both football teams smashed their opponents in a special day for both clubs. The Senior boys played off for the Ron Sells Cup, in honour of the former North Shore coach and St Peter’s football legend. It was a flip-of-the-coin contest between Ronnie’s grandsons Patrick Eastman and Tom Gribble for who would take the best on ground honours, but Eastman was awarded the imitation cup. The netballers had wins all around, with the 19s achieving a 69-point victory.
Function wise, we get another week’s break before Ladies Day hits us! They’re never a disappointment, but this year we’re all in for a treat. There’ll be an all-male tap trio, complimentary manis and pedis and plenty of champagne. It’s definitely not to be missed. Due to unavailability the date of the annual Auction Night has been changed and a new one will be set soon. Keep an eye out though, it’s always a classy, funfilled evening. Check out www.gwspsc.org for more details!

A big welcome to our friends from Lara for our Round 10 match. Our Seniors’ confidence is soaring following the 20-point win last week against Leopold, but we are expecting a great clash with Lara who will want to assure that they make up for the loss back in Round 3. Last Saturday night was the St Mary’s Night of Nights, the major fundraiser for the club and a great night was had by all that attended. The auctions were very successful and the band had everyone up and dancing with music from the 60s right through to some classic Nirvana. The major auctions had good bidding against them and all items were sold. In order to enhance our web page, we are looking for some old or new photos or even newspaper articles that you may have collected that relate to the club.
If you have articles that you would like to share, then please email them to our email address at stmaryssportingclub@bigpond.com This week we acknowledge our sponsors, Jetset Travel Waurn Ponds, Kardinia Park Motel, Lane Kelly Curtains and The Lord Nelson Hotel. We thank these sponsors for their ongoing support of the club.
Upcoming events: Under14 Camp at Cottage By The Sea July 6 and 7. Scotchman Hills Ladies Day - July 20. Past Players Lunch - August 3.

The best thing we can say about last week is that it was last week and this week we have the opportunity to make amends. There should be no excuses this week, the whole team needs to play as one unit and get back on the winners’ list. We have a point to prove against St Mary’s as they made us look stupid last time we played them. The Twos continue to build momentum, they are only a game out of the five. Another good display like last week and we could end up in the five after this week’s game. The Colts again matched it with Grovedale for three-and-a-half quarters, it was only a 15 minutes lapse in the second quarter that cost the game. In fact they outscored Grovedale in the second half, let’s hope this week we can pull off win against South Barwon. The juniors continue to work hard and win matches. The Under 16 As and Under 14 As are both sitting in the top two of their division. The rest of the teams are also performing well and most are in the hunt for finals action. Make sure everyone gets around the kids and encourage them as they are the future champions of our club. If would be great if some of the senior players can get to the AusKick on Sunday plus, time permitting join in training as part of your warm up with the Under 16s and 14s. They all train on the same nights. It was great to see last week a couple of senior players joining in training with the Under 16s. You cannot underestimate the positive affect this has on junior players. Also on home games, if anyone can spare half an hour to help in the canteen, it would be greatly appreciated. A timely reminder to all supporters, players and staff about inappropriate comments and remarks on facebook, emails and twitter.
Football Geelong has policies in place and if you breach these policies it not only affects you as the person, it also affects the club. If you cannot say something good about a person don’t say anything. So before you add a comment on social media, stop and think, will your comments embarrass you, your family, team mates and the club? If so, keep your comments to yourself. Again thanks to all the sponsors of the club. The sponsors for this week are: Bisinella Developments, Hass Pumps, W & B Dando Pty Ltd, Civilex Vic, Central Recycling, Apco, Lara Town & Country Pizza and Pasta, Lara Subway, Lara Quality Meats, Little River Plumbing, BKM Engineering, Rod’s Bakery, Buckley’s, Green and Kelly Motors, EnviroRisk Management, Daisy’s Plumbing, DMT Dancing, All Things Travel Lara and the Norlane Hotel. Please support these businesses when you can. When passing make sure you call in to the Norlane for a cold beer and meal. Special thanks to the organisers of the Auction night which was held last Saturday night, being Deb Tomlinson, Jack Fogarty, Luke Wilson, Carol Stone, Di Van Doran, Brendan McAuliffe and Kathy Fulton. It was a great night. It was also pleasing to get great feedback and comments from Buckley’s Centre Management on how well the night ran and that it was a pleasure working with the Lara Football Club. Thanks again to Buckley’s Centre.
Upcoming events: July 20: Sponsor Day. August 17: Lara Football Club Formal Ball. August 24: Snake Drop.

CORIO BAY HEALTH GROUP with Alice Goodear, Podistrist
Tibialis posterior tendon dysfunction Tibialis posterior tendon dysfunction is a soft tissue injury that is not widely known within the general community. The dysfunction can result in foot pain, swelling and flat feet.
You can use your arms for assistance, but ensure majority of your weight is going through your feet. It is advised this regime be undertaken twice daily for 12 weeks.
The tibialis posterior muscle extends from tibia and fibula (lower leg bones), it then travels down the inside of the lower leg and ankle (behind the inner ankle bone) where it inserts into various bones in the foot via the tibialis posterior tendon. It is this insertion into various bones of the foot that is usually affected and results in severe mid-foot pronation (rolling inwards) and pain upon palpation of the tendon. The tibialis posterior muscle is responsible for maintaining the foot arch, moving the foot/ankle inwards and pointing the foot/ankle down. Tibialis posterior tendon dysfunction is a common injury seen in running sports such as football, basketball, hockey and long distance athletes. Along with overuse, there are other factors that may predispose a person to this type of injury, for example, poor foot biomechanics, weight, training errors, joint stiffness, muscle weakness (particularly in the calf muscle), inadequate fitness etc. Adequate rest along with specific exercise is the best form of recovery for this soft tissue injury. The following exercises should be also tried to help decrease inflammation and aid in the recovery process of the tendon.
Strengthening exercises Heel raises
Performed in a single-leg standing position with bodyweight placed mainly in the forefoot region and heel hanging off the low step. Lift heel off step, and then lower heel just past step height. Complete fifteen repetitions, three times on each leg , resting for one minute in between sets.
Inversion exercises Turning foot inwards with an elastic Theraband (building up to three sets of thirty repetitions, twice daily).
Physical therapies Massage of the tibialis posterior muscle/tendon region is appropriate as it improves blood circulation which helps aid in the healing and regeneration process. Icing the tendon for five minutes on and then five minutes off after exercising will reduce inflammation too. Be sure to move the ice pack around to avoid damage to the skin. Anti-pronation taping: This form of taping is designed to hold up your arch and re-align your foot into a neutral position, thereby taking the unwanted pressure off the injured tendon. Tibialis Posterior tendon dysfunction has a positive prognosis if there is the appropriate rehabilitation program. Early intervention is best, so if you suspect you are suffering from this injury, and have completed the above exercises with no improvements, it is important to be seen by a health professional that can treat and manage you accurately. NETBALL NEWS with Nikki Cooke
Championship finals tomorrow Tomorrow will see more than 1000 players converge on the State Netball Hockey Centre to compete in the State Association Championships for 2013. The Geelong Football Netball League will have its 13/Under, 15/Under, 17/Under and Senior teams competing. The junior teams qualified at the tournament held at Kardinia Park in May and the Senior team goes straight through to the finals day. I would like to take this opportunity to wish all players, coaches and officials the best of luck for the day and here’s hoping you will be driving some silverware back down the highway tomorrow afternoon.
Brazilian Butterfly Player of the Round Congratulations to Kate Shepherd from Bell Park who was awarded Player of the Round for the Round 9 clash against St Joseph’s. Congratulations Kate, we hope you enjoy the voucher. This year our weekly winners are awarded a Brazilian Butterfly Prize Pack to the value of $45.
Coaches Corner Shooting
Regardless of which country netball is played in, the techniques of shooting for goal remains very similar. Shooting is all about balance, rhythm and feel for the shot. Shooting for goal should be an automatic, well sequenced skill. This just doesn’t happen by chance and players wanting to be either Goal Shooters or Goal Attacks take on the added responsibility of extra training. Being an accurate shooter takes many extra hours of practice shooting above and beyond the team’s normal training sessions. Shooters should aim to practice every day to gain accuracy. Shooters should always try to be balanced and in line with the post before they attempt to shoot. Feet, hips, body, shoulders and elbows should all be ‘square’ to the post. This will give the ball every opportunity to travel in a straight line to the ring. Shooters should always look at the same aim point every time they shoot. These aim points could be the front of the ring, above the middle of the ring or at the back of the ring. Each shooter must find an aim point which suits them then stick with it. Start at the base and look at what the feet and legs do when shooting for goal. The shooter’s feet should be parallel approximately shoulder width apart in a comfortable stance. Shooters should try not to step forward as they shoot. This will give the defender an advantage because the shooter has stepped toward the defender and lessened the 0.9m distance. The power of the shot comes from the legs. It does not matter from where the shooter takes the shot, the top of the shot should not change. More bend in the knees will give more

NETBALL NEWS (Cont’d) Therefore coaches should consider:
power on a longer shot for goal.
• Short shots - Mid range shots - Long shots.
Consider opening a bottle of soda. As you open the lid the bubbles come from the bottom to the top. This is the same for the shot for goal. The fingers guide the ball in an arc towards the goal ring. The upper portion of the shot for goal should not differ whether the shooter is in close or far from the post. The ball should sit on all finger tips and the thumb on one hand.
• Shots taken from favourite position. • Shots taken from least favourite position. •S tep backs - Steps to the side Step ins. • Jump shots. • Penalty shots.
To get this position, toss the ball up a few times using one hand. Where the ball sits in the fingers as it is caught is where the fingers should be for the shot of goal. The fingers should be spread evenly.
• Shots taken after a split leg land. • Shots after taking a rebound.
If the ball sits too high on the finger tips the shooter will lose control of the shot. If the ball sits flat on the palm of the hand the shooter will lose the feel of the shot and throw the ball instead of shooting (guiding) it to the post. The ball should be placed above the head in the shooting hand. The other hand is placed gently to the side of the ball as a support only to keep it balanced.
•S hots as the shooter is falling out of court. • Shots after the shooter has been moving. • Shooting when fatigued.
Drills:
Because shooting is all about rhythm, the knees and elbows bend at the same time. As the body straightens in sequence the ball is not released until the arm is at full extension. The ball is released in a smooth fluid action following right through to the finger tips. The index and middle fingers direct the ball to the post and must be strong. Coaches can determine which fingers are being used by the spin placed on the ball. A back spin shows the index and middle fingers being used. A lateral rotation of the ball will tell the coach that the ring and little fingers are too strong, causing the ball to spin out of the ring. The wrist and fingers should flick the ball in a gentle back spin motion to the ring. Fingers should follow the arc of the ball to the post. The entire sequence of the shot for goal should be a rhythmic motion. Jerky movements can cause the ball to move off the line to the post. Shooting practices include any of the movements and landings that shooters perform in a match.

NETBALL CLUB NOTES
LEOPOLD What a fabulous day we had against St Mary’s who we respect and know are fantastic opposition. Our As had a brilliant win by 14 goals after putting their foot down with a 10-0 start to the third quarter. Anna Simonsen was brilliant in defence and Rach King was equally great in goals, shooting 90%. Our Bs welcomed Simone Fagan back in style with a brilliant two-goal win against St Mary’s in second place. Daisy Medic was outstanding in WD, dictating play and driving hard out of defence. The Bs currently sit on top of the ladder, which is great. The Cs continued their return to form run winning by 20 goals, seeing them return to second on the ladder. Lisa Carmichael and Stacey Learmonth led a true team effort. In Kirsty Harper’s 100th game, the Ds certainly had their chances against the current ladder leaders, but turnovers proved costly resulting in a narrow fivegoal defeat. Rach Murray and Bryony Exner played great matches.
The 19s were outplayed by a very skilful St Mary’s team, losing by 43 goals. Tilly Skok showed her versatility again with a great mid and goals performance. Congratulations to our 13 & Under Div 1 and 15 & Under Div 1&2 who all had great wins against strong St Mary’s junior teams. All other junior teams competed well in great contests. Milestones, achievements and announcements: Congratulations to A Grade Superstars Holly Hood and Emily Mannix who have successfully made the Victorian Flames team for the 2013 Australian Netball League competition commencing in August. We are very proud of you both. Holly and Emily will play alongside fellow Geelong players Kelsey Browne (South Barwon) and Kate Thompson (former Bell Park). We wish you all the success for the coming season. This week we welcome North Shore to our courts. Go Polders’!
ST MARY’S The unstoppable Under 19s have once again had an impressive performance on the court, walking away with a 51-8 goal win. Second-time 19s coach Katrina Daws is drawing some serious potential from this group of girls, especially Laura Ellis, Ashlee Merchant and Ally Bamford who were best on court. After a magnificent performance from Courtenay McLaughlin and shooter Adrienne Doherty, D Grade played a strong four quarters to defeat Leopold. It was a tight match for at least three quarters before St Mary’s broke away, winning by eight. Still undefeated from last year, the team is seemingly unbeatable.
A 20-goal loss for St Mary’s C grade puts them seventh on the ladder. After a loose first half they picked up and managed to hold their own, but reining premier Leopold proved too strong. B Grade displayed an exciting match which saw the teams score 56 Leopold to 55 St Mary’s with Marnie Hughes stepping up in the ring with shooter Kat Assumussen as great support. This win keeps the team in the top four. An intense match between the two A Grade teams blew out after the first half with St Mary’s going down by 14. Lucy Vercher, Kate Slattery and Caitln O’Dwyer among the best for St Mary’s.

NETBALL CLUB NOTES
GROVEDALE Grovedale Tigers visit Bell Park to contest Round 10 competition. Tiger Juniors will be looking to continue their winning form with all but Under 17 divisions finishing with wins last round against Lara. Under 19 girls were far too strong for the Cats opposition and celebrated a convincing win.
Cartwright is encouraged by an impressive final quarter against the Cats last round with the girls hitting their given target score. After a disappointing first half, Meg will be expecting improved court performances from her charges this week and place an emphasis on game fundamentals. Tiger supporters are encouraged to don the black and gold and support our girls once again at both Bell Park venues of Douglass Street and Hamlyn Park.
Tiger Seniors continue to build on lessons learned from disappointing results throughout the season and will be playing to improve their performance against the Dragons this round.
Members and supporters are reminded of the upcoming 80’s Night on July 13, with tickets now available from the clubrooms. It’s sure to be another great Tigers’ social event and we look forward to seeing everyone there.
B Grade recovered against the Cats from what looked to be a convincing loss to go down by only three goals at the full time whistle. A Grade girls have embraced the return of the consistent and reliable Ash Davies who has recovered from an early season injury. Coach Meg
Go Tiges!
ST ALBANS her played her 100th game. Kirsten has played from juniors and is now a strong senior player.
Last week we travelled to Elderslie Reserve to take on Newtown and Chilwell. Unfortunately we were only able to come away with the one win. D Grade was able to cement its spot in the top five with a 25-goal win, scoring 51 goals to 26. They are now sitting second on the ladder with only the two losses for the season. The girls are playing great netball and are looking forward to the last half of the season. C Grade had a six-point loss, scoring 34 goals to 40. The girls were competitive throughout but unfortunately were not able to overcome Newtown. B Grade had just their third loss for the season, losing to Newtown by 12 goals. The girls are now sitting just outside the top five, below Bell Park on percentage only. Congratulations to Kirsten Gahn
A Grade also had a loss to a strong Newtown side. After two good wins, unfortunately the girls were unable to keep up with Newtown and lost by 18. Today we welcome Geelong West to St Albans Reserve. It is also the football Ladies Day at the club rooms, so after netball feel free to go and join the ladies for a few drinks. Entry is $30 and lunch and supper are supplied. Good luck to all players taking the court today. GO SAINTS!

NETBALL CLUB NOTES
NEWTOWN & CHILWELL It was Ladies Day at Elderslie Reserve where we hosted St Albans. A thank you to all those who organised and ran the day. And a special thank you to St Albans for accommodating the game day changes so we could get off the courts by 1pm and over to lunch. Overall it was a reasonably successful day for the netballers. Maddie Taylor again displayed the courage and determination that puts her amongst the best players on a weekly basis. Danni Stewart and Julia Knott also had excellent games with the team running out winners 50 to 32. The B Grade girls also ran out comfortable winners, Kate Jeanes providing the drive from defence, with support from Sallyanne Jennings and their efforts being rewarded by excellent shooting again from Jaymie Lowe. C Grade went one better than last week, winning 40 to 34. Liz Moore split her time evenly between the defence and shooting circle – shooting 17 goals in half a game to be best-on-court. Jayde Gray and Hannah Coulter provided able support to bring the team home. D Grade worked tirelessly but have still yet to get a win on the board. Prue Clissold leads from defence with consistent best on court performances, and was supported by Tiarni Longworth and young Natasha Ferguson. The Under 19 squad notched up their third win of the season, with the defence of Jaimee Wilkens and Kayla Di Pasquale into the midcourt where they received excellent support from Abbey Vansomeran. Only one Under 17 side was fielded by St Albans, but unfortunately despite the best efforts of Georgie Barclay in
defence and Cassidy Moore and Erin Cleary playing in goals they were not able to overcome the St Albans girls. In the Under 15 competition again there was only one junior side, however on this occasion our juniors came out on top. Some excellent shooting by some of the girls at an accuracy of 84% showed our junior shooters can stand up to the game if given the opportunity. Sophie Claridge set up the feeding, and received excellent support from Jess Harcombe in shooting and Millie Porte in defence for the girls to have a good win 41 to 23. The Under 13 teams had mixed results, the Under 13 Div 2 team running out winners 37 to 3 despite the loss of several girls to injury and illness, with Georgia Kelly, Laura Kelly (no, they are not related) and Hannah Hall providing great work in the midcourt for a good reward. The Div 1 team however, were not so fortunate losing 21 to 19. The defensive team of Katie Hopkin, Denby Taylor and Millie Simkinson-Lindsay were best on court. The Friday night girls continue to work hard, with reward for effort gradually coming. The Under 11 girls have fun and are hopefully not put off by the weather. The 17 girls and 13 girls had wins and one of the 11 teams, the others are showing steady improvement. A thank you to all parents and coaching staff for their efforts. An early start for us this week with the road trip to Colac before another away game at Lara. Once again thank you to all volunteers and sponsors for putting on an excellent Ladies Day – we hope all had fun.
SOUTH BARWON With several players missing from all senior levels, our senior teams were pushed to the limits last week. It was wonderful to see our senior coaches, Sascha Veldhuis and Stacey Hoiles, take the court for the A Grade team. These two players did everything they encourage our senior players to do, and it was a pleasure to watch and learn from them on court. This week we move into the second half of the draw, and have our ‘Side By Side’ round against St Josephs. The Side By Side round gives all players and supporters of the South Barwon Netball Club the opportunity to come together and show their support for our club and each other,
both at the Friday night and Saturday games. We welcome our sponsors to watch our A Grade (and other teams) play, and take the opportunity to thank them for their ongoing support. We also have the presentation of the Madison Browne Medal which is annually awarded to a junior player who plays at both a junior and senior level, and displays outstanding qualities and characteristics in aspects of their involvement with our club. Should be a great day, so get along and show your support of our amazing club, sponsors and each other. GO SWANS!

BELL PARK Today the seniors play Grovedale at Hamlyn Park while the juniors play Grovedale at Douglass Street. Good luck to all players who take the court.
minimise St Joseph’s attempts at goals and provide Bell Park with more opportunities to get the ball down their attack end.
It was a pleasant day at Hamlyn Park Reserve a last week. We came up against St Joseph’s and came away with mixed results in the seniors.
C Grade lost 32-52. The team lacked intensity and urgency throughout the game resulting in lost opportunities across the court. Tammy Eloredge played smart in the attacking end and Casey Bett and Maddy Menzel provided their team with turnovers in defence.
A Grade had a very eventful game coming away with a 49-21 win. Kelsey Rau backed up her stellar B Grade performance with another fantastic game for A Grade. Alannah McCooke had a strong game in defence while Maloury Davis shot accurately to get her side over the line. Rachel Rodger put her body on the line, fighting hard for the win, and came away with a broken nose.
The D Grade lost 31-21. They had some great passages of play but poor passes meant they couldn’t capitalise on their hard work. Stacey Sharp, Lisa Uebergang and Maddy Richmond were among the best players. To all the lovely ladies of the club who will be participating in the Ladies Day, have a fantastic day and enjoy this special social event.
B Grade came away with a win 46-28. The midcourter Kelsey Rau had an outstanding game working tirelessly in the midcourt. Defenders Laura Giles and Hayley Johnstone combined well to
