ROUND 17 SATURDAY, 18 AUGUST 2018 Wonthaggi v Moe Bairnsdale v Leongatha Sale v Warragul Morwell v Drouin Maffra v Traralgon
Authorised by Darren Chester MP, National Party of Australia – Victoria,126 Franklin Street, Traralgon, Vic 3844. Printed by Adcell Group, 203 Malop Street, Geelong, Vic 3220.
ROUND 17 UPDATE Two rounds to go in the regular season and we are set up for an exciting finish to the season. A few underdog victories last week mean that there are still three sides vying for top spots and also three sides competing for a place in the elimination final. It has been a year of record breaking games and Drouin’s David Olsen celebrated his club record game in the best way possible with the most unlikely of victories against last years premiers Leongatha at Parrot Park. A great achievement for the club that has managed to run around the on field performances this season. Warragul went into their match needing a win to stay in finals contention. They faced the top of the table Eagles however with Maffra’s recent erratic history travelling to Warragul the Gulls gave themselves every chance. Western
Park proved to be Maffra’s Achilles heel again as the Eagles were unable to take the opportunity to put one hand on the minor premiership. It was a similar case in the netball when the Gulls also defeated Maffra in a 6th v 5th contest. With both sides level on points and only separated by 2% Warragul claimed what could be a decisive victory in the finals race. Warragul now a game clear in 5th and with 9th placed Sale & 7th placed Bairnsdale to finish with the Eagles to face 2nd place Traralgon and 3rd place Moe. In what could be a preview of the qualifying final the young Lions side defeated reigning premiers Traralgon. The Maroons were nearly back to full strength but couldn’t get the job done handing rivals Morwell the minor premiership

PAST ROUND 17's By Paul Carter
5 YEARS AGO … 17TH AUGUST, 2013 With the top five teams now settled, the battle for the double chance third rung on the ladder was on in earnest. Maffra’s solid home ground win over fellow finalist Wonthaggi propelled them from fifth to third, replacing Traralgon and leapfrogging the Power. Darren Sheen’s five goal effort was crucial for Maffra, James Huts and Sam Tudor leading a backline which conceded just five goals. Traralgon lost a thriller to Morwell, having led by four goals at the first break. The Tigers pegged them back, hitting the front in the final term. Dean MacDonald starred for Morwell with five goals, while key backman Jack Brown was named as their best. Leongatha had a huge win over Moe with classy forward Cade Maskell brilliant with eleven goals. Sale had its game in the bag when they booted nine goals in the second quarter to go in at half time with a 79 point lead over Drouin. Bairnsdale and Warragul had a good battle with the Redlegs’ third quarter seeing them gain the break. James Gibbs kicked five goals for the winners.

20 YEARS AGO … 15 & 16TH AUG, 1998 The battle for places in the 1998 Finals series was very much alive after Round 17. Traralgon, Leongatha and Moe had long cemented their spots, but the Elimination Final spots saw Maffra (4th) just a game ahead of Wonthaggi (8th). Morwell’s massive win over Bairnsdale saw them leap from 9th to 5th, Anthony Waller kicking a club record 16 goals as the Tigers romped to a 198 point victory. Traralgon led Sale by over eight goals at three quarter time then went into cruise mode for the final quarter. Leongatha was stretched for three quarters by Warragul, then kicked four unanswered goals to win by 31 points. Moe’s win over Wonthaggi was soured with injuries to key players Troy Dwyer (shoulder) and Darron Eastwell (concussion). Maffra had the bye.

Although Wonthaggi has had a season they’d rather forget, Moe would be well advised not to take a win as granted this afternoon. The Power is always a difficult team to beat on its home turf, and would like nothing better than to go to the end of the season having beaten a top five side. For their part, Moe needs to keep winning to go into the finals with all systems running.

: Leongatha 10 C.Dunne (2016) Notes : For Bairnsdale, 2018 has been a disappointing season, one where they had trouble getting their best 22 together, resulting in a year of inconsistency. Away from home the Redlegs have struggled, whereas at home their form has been markedly better, a five goal loss to Maffra being their worst result for the year. In Round 15 they won three quarters against Sale, the Magpies’ seven goal second quarter proving decisive. When Bairnsdale and Leongatha met at the City Oval last year the Parrots were made to earn the points, returning home winners by just ten points. Leongatha found out against Drouin that no game can be inked in as won this year and this it be the case again today where, given even a sniff of a chance, the Redlegs could strike.

Their last two meetings have been at Warragul where Sale has squeaked in by 11 points and one point. Warragul will go into today’s game with the belief that they have the personnel to get the job done and win, which is what they simply must do if they hope to participate in the finals in two weeks’ time. Sale won’t want to tarnish what has been a much improved season with a home ground loss, giving this match the potential to have a finals-like atmosphere around it. Expect this game to be in doubt until deep into the final quarter.

Although the wins haven’t been registered on the board in numbers they would have hoped for, the Tigers and the Hawks have shown great improvement over the course of the 2018 season. Had some close calls for both teams gone their way it could well have been a different story. Today presents them with a golden opportunity to gain some late season premiership points and the chance to sing the club song loudly and proudly.

The last three meetings of the Eagles and the Maroons have been no exception. In last year’s Qualifying Final Traralgon beat the more fancied Eagles, kicking five final quarter goals to come from behind to win. Maffra won the Preliminary Final, but only after Traralgon had gained a slender lead at the final change-over. Then this year the Maroons led from late in the first quarter to the 19 minute mark of the final term, Maffra kicking the final three goals of the match to win by eleven points. What will today’s clash serve up ? With finals beckoning for Maffra and a place in the finals on the line for Traralgon, there will be nothing left in the sheds and plenty of action on the field.

CLUB NOTES WONTHAGGI With a spring feeling in the air, we ventured to Morwell. The football ground and new netball courts were in 1st class condition. U16’s, After a belting last week, the boys came to play. The game was played at a high standard. Both teams knew that a win was vital at this time of year. With some very disappointing decisions made in the last quarter by several adults in charge, no wonder there are very vocal people about. U18’s This was a game the lads knew they had to win, and did. Co-operation between clubs is important. We played a 17 player game, to help out the home side. We know all too well what it’s like to be in the same position. Reserves. This game was played between 2 sides struggling for a win. The home side was the winner in the end, but was a good game to watch. Congratulations to the 7, U18’s who filled in, as the injury list keeps growing. Seniors, We started well, and played an enjoyable game to watch. As the game progressed, the home team slowly pegged backed the lead and we couldn’t catch them. There were plenty of positive comments about the indigenous jumper used on the day. A Grade, We were always up against it, playing the ladder leaders. We rotated our juniors through and they never missed a beat. Thanks the highly respected Morwell girls in a nice clean game. Congratulations to Isabella on her 1st senior game. B Grade, Another great game today girls.
Showing that you truly believe in each other and you are all prepared to push through. A high intensity close game, a great win. C Grade, Another great win against Morwell with three of our players out, we still played a solid game, working the ball nicely from defence to goals. We wish Steph Magro all the best for her recovery due to a dislocation of the knee, you will be certainly missed on court. U17’s With a couple of girls out, it was always going to be a tough game. Morwell came out firing and showed us what we need to work on leading into the finals. U15’s After a very slow 1st quarter we found ourselves trailing by 14. A few minor moves and we came out in the 2nd quarter where we were a lot more competitive. We started to put more defensive pressure on leading to turnovers. And we won the 4th quarter. U13’s With the coach away, this team of little champions played amazing for her. All 9 players played a great game and this win was very well deserved. A great game before the finals. GO POWER, You Bloody Bewdy.

CLUB NOTES MOE First and foremost, a big congratulations from all at the club to Sam Morrow who was recently crowned Victorian Apprentice of the Year. Sam’s work as a local sparky is of obvious quality as he beat a strong field of candidates to take out the honour. Last Saturday was a fairly bleak one at Traralgon it must be said, with only a handful of wins to ride home about. Having said that, the majority of our sides will still feature in finals action in a fortnights time, giving them an opportunity to put their best foot forward. Football Seniors Put in a very disappointing performance in a match in which most losing clichés were relevant. From start to finish Traralgon were able to control the game in what was a sombre afternoon for all wearing the maroon and blue. Moe now find themselves equal with both Traralgon and Warragul with two rounds to play, meaning the equation is simple: three teams will be fighting for two spots in the top five. Best players for Moe were the elder statesmen Tom Long and Peter Ainsworth, along with James Blaser, Charlie Rieniets, Dylan Farrell and James De Virgilio. Reserves Played a match in which neither side really deserved to lose, so by the end the points had to be shared in a draw. As momentum ebbed and flowed throughout, both sides had their moments of brilliance and frustration in what hopefully serves as a good precursor to the first final. Best players were Luke Mackay, Anthony Gould, Jayden Van Dyk, Matt Pearce, James Heslop and Tyler Morrow. Under 18’s Weren’t quite able to take home the points in their top of the table clash, falling short in the final quarter after matching it with Traralgon for the first three. Despite the short coming, the Lions will feel confident heading into September with good form under their belt and memories of the win at Sale as underdogs last season. Best players on the day were Trent Baldi, Darcy Durham, Luke Tumino, Ben Maslen, Nathan Balfour and Kyle Jennings who is familiar with the Traralgon clubrooms. Under 16’s Went down in a frustrating encounter, failing to curb a strong start by Traralgon in which Moe never fully recovered from. Skins summed up his troops predicament well after the match, saying that ‘when we lose we are losing the same way’. The Lions will have to tread carefully in the coming weeks, with the cruelness of the Gippsland League ladder still not set meaning they cannot afford to look too far ahead just yet. Better players on the day were Matt Heywood, Riley Moore, Brandon Watson, Bailey Brown, Blake Dyson and Jess McGrath. Netball A Grade Always good to beat Traralgon. In a season that
26
MAJOR RAFFLE First prize $38K Audi! SEE A SENIOR FOOTBALL OR NETBALLER FOR A TICKET $50 a ticket, drawn after the last home game. 5 prizes up for grabs. continues to throw curveballs, Moe were able to grind out a hard fought 56 to 59 victory to send them within half a game of the top three. Considering the amount of changes the side has had on a week to week basis, to have a finals birth sown up is a commendable effort in itself. B Grade Like Lewis Roberts-Thompson always only ever playing well in Grand Finals, Moe were again unable to take down Traralgon, despite a concerted effort from all involved. Possessions and game play seesawed throughout with the final margin being a solidary goal. The match was described as feisty in the nicest way possible. C Grade Were unable to gain a victory but looking at things with a glass half full approach can use the next game against Wonthaggi as a good lead in to what will more than likely be the match up in the first final. Despite the scoreboard the match was much closer than people would have thought, with Moe able to play well in patches. Under 17’s Were the unfortunate losers on this occasion, going down 42 to 39 in what was a tight match throughout. The Under 17’s cling onto fifth spot but will probably need to win another remaining match just to make life easier with Leongatha breathing down their neck with an easier run home. Under 15’s Won easily, we can say team effort again. The Under 15’s are locked in fourth place and should use the remaining home and away matches as a chance to fine tune everything for September. Under 13’s Will live to fight another day – but in six months time. Any chance the side had of featuring in finals was squashed last Saturday at the hands of Traralgon. With two games left players can play with some freedom to enjoy themselves without fear of outcome.

CLUB NOTES BAIRNSDALE Back at home for the last time this year, today we welcome the Parrots to the City Oval. Last Round was a huge day at City Oval – AFL Gippsland Health Round – Thank you to the League and Gippsland Health Alliance for allowing us to host the round for such an important causeThe message is clear, support each other and make good mental health your goal. We also had our past players come along and enjoy the clubs hospitality, Sparra, Crowy, Macca, Frewy, Sharpy, Whippet, Stuey and Skuta just to name a few. The guys shared stories and memories from back in the hay day as they say! It was also great to see some of our past Netballers come along and make the day even better! We then followed it up with the annual Reverse Draw; Manny, Frewy and Cappa lead the charge and delivered. It was a sensational night and an even better crowd. Congratulations to Dom Gelati for taking out the top prize and thank you to Lou and the ladies for doing a cracking job with the food. Glenis Slater took home the Wood Raffle last round, congratulation Glenis and thank to Russ Walker and Cam Holland for supplying the wood.
build a really competitive side into the future. Today we reckon could be the day to snare a win on our home turf against the reigning premiers! Netballers are keen to take on Leongatha today after gaining only 1 win last round. Well done to the A grade girls who put on a fantastic performance, and fought back with great composure to defeat Sale. Michaela O’Connor proving some top defence as best player for the day, and well done to Ashleigh Wheeler receiving the Alliance Medal. Ash showed courage, determination and teamwork on the court and was acknowledged in support of the Mental Health Round. Last week for our week off we had a great boxing session run by Adam Rees, the girls thoroughly enjoyed putting the gloves on, thanks Adam. Goodluck to all sides today!
The Under 16’s boys were missing a few against Sale but managed to grind out the win on the day, they proved persistence, structure, discipline and concentration will be rewarded.
Today we have approximately 60 volunteers who are helping make game day happen.
Ando’s under 18’s are starting to find some consistency, the boys look like they are starting to settle, they had a solid win against Sale and will be looking for another team effort today against the Parrots. The senior men just fell short against Sale last round but really impressed on the day, it was only 10 minutes late in the second quarter that hurt the most. It is pleasing to see the boys finishing the year strongly. The signs are there for this group to
The support from our club Woman & Men is the main ingredient for a successful day, thank you! Challenge Yourself! Come on Redlegs!!!! CLUB NOTES LEONGATHA As the saying goes a week is a long time in football. Last week showed that in spades. Drouin had missed out the week before in a tight contest against Traralgon and came to The Aviary looking to take a scalp of one of the top teams in the competition. With the added motivation of putting together a big game in honour of David Olsen breaking their senior games record Drouin looked switched on from the outset. With a very stiff breeze blowing down the ground to town end conditions were very tricky. Turnovers were the order of the day and it was whoever was going to punish the opposition most that would come out on top at the end of the day. And it was Drouin who did the better, coming from behind in the last term to seal a big victory. For our lads it’s back to the training track and work hard to rectify the flaws in our game that appeared in this game. The Reserves were untroubled as Drouin were a bit short in the Twos. It was a very patchy game where plenty of players had moments without dominating proceedings. The U18s didn't have a game as Drouin were unable to field a side. The U16s worked really hard and put together a great game, teaming well and running the ball well in the tricky conditions. The U13s continued on their winning way with a big win, all but securing their spot in the top 3. The U15s had a tight match but came out on the wrong end of the scoreboard, going down by a few. They are playing a little inconsistently at the moment and will need to rectify this if they want to have a say in the finals. The 17s completed phase 1 of the last 3 games with a tight victory. If they hold their composure they should make the finals and then anything can happen. The C Graders started well and were right in it, it seemed that Drouin then found another gear and put our girls to the sword. The B Grade girls worked hard and even

CLUB NOTES
What a day our senior brigade had! They battled the wind and a relentless Redleg team that wouldn’t let Sale kick away at any stage of the game. Bairnsdale came out strong but with the main men in the middle Jordan ‘Jumbotron’ Dessent and Kane ‘fluffa’ Martin controlling the game it was hard for Bairnsdale to get the upper hand. The boys were everywhere, both had 32+ disposals for the day. With Muz slotting his 250th goal for Sale during the games as well. Scores were Sale 12.13-85 to 10.13-73. BestJumbo, Fluffa, M.Dowse, J.Allison, C.Laverty and S.Fyfe. And speaking of 250, our fearless and never aging Coach Shane Fyfe plays his 250th game as a Magpie this week. With another milestone weekend, the club and all the supporters would like to congratulate Shane ‘5-Time’ Fyfe on such a great achievement. Our thirds were again in the race for the four points for most of the game but were over run in the last quarter by the home team. Scores Sale 3.7-25 to 7.10-52. Best- T.Stephenson, M.Reeves, Z.Hider, D.Barnett, D.Sclater and J.Allman.
Much like the Thirds, the U16 boys proved they can match it with the top teams and looked the goods till a final quarter burst from Bairnsdale, final scores were Sale 10.2-62 to 11.7-73. Best- D.Byron, M.Hawkins, M.Benson, S.Smith, H.Pearce and H.Swarski. The netballers are coming off a great trip east to Bairnsdale where we won 5 out of the 6 games and took home the Mental Health Challenge Round Trophy. Congratulations to Milla Anderson, Liv Barnett, Kirsten Craft,

We played second placed Leongatha last round and had a fantastic win in very windy conditions. The game was in the balance in the dying minutes but this time we were able to hang on and win. This result shows we can compete with the best teams when we play our best football. This result was a great way to celebrate a major milestone for club stalwart David “ Chewy “ Olsen who broke our club games record previously held by Stephen “Scooter” Bethune. “ Chewy “has now played 246 games for Drouin. David who played his first senior game in 2002 has been an amazing club person and is admired for his loyalty and consistency over a great career. He continues to play great football for our club and will hopefully build on his game tally in the future. Well done Chewy. The senior game result was a 3 point win over the Parrots. This time we took our chances and were able to sustain our intensity late in the game. We know we can compete against the best teams in the competition and now know how to finish off a game. Best players were: game record breaker David Olsen (Barry Plant Award), Liam Axford (Middels) , Wayne Morris (Family Hotel ), Tom Barr (Kim’s Kitchen ) and Clayton Kingi (Steam and Riddles). The Reserves faced a quality Leongatha team who were bigger and fitter than our side. Leongatha made a strong start and kicked away with the strong wind behind them. Again we battled the game hard in a good standard game. Our last quarter was our best. Best players were: Rhys Fairlie (Select Office ), Will Bryce (Community Bank ) , Shaun Straka ( Middels Award ) , Rowan Drake (Drouin Gourmet Café ) and Jaydyn Fairlie ( Family Hotel Award). Our under 16 side started well but in the end had a tough day against a high quality Leongatha squad. The Parrots were bigger and stronger and showed the class of a top team. Our young hawks were tough at the contest and fought the game out bravely. Best players were: Jack Fraser (Select Office Award), Tom Evans (Intersport) , Trent Kearney (Intersport ) , Xavier La Frantz (Community Bank ), Harley Nicklen (Community Bank) and Nicholas Caddy ( Jakk’s Pizza). Our Club person of the week is a hardworking and loyal club person, Kelly Bethune. Kelly is the coordinator of our Thursday night meal team and has built a great crew of helpers. Kelly is always happy to help in any way he can round the club. Kelly’s team caters for club functions and did the catering for our Auction night recently helping build the profit from the night. Kelly and her team enjoy a nice white wine and have lots of fun together. We really appreciate and respect Kelly’s contributions to our club. She wins the Drouin Family Hotel Club Person of the Week. We are looking forward today’s return game against Leongatha who are a league benchmark. MAJOR SPONSORS : DROUIN and DISTRICT

CLUB NOTES MAFFRA The erratic weather gods saved their worst till last, and our supporters didn't know whether to laugh or cry. Apart from the cricket pitch, the ground was in good condition but covered in a sliver of water, nullifying our small brigade's advantage. On the other hand the Gulls’ marking of the wet ball was remarkable, they deserved their win. Keiran Jones’ large frame and our strong men Jack Johnstone, Ed Carr, Danny Butcher, Kel Porter and Jarryd Clohesy were our best. A couple of goals in the last minute embarrassed what had been a bruising contest in the conditions. The Ressies had their toughest contest for the year in the first half of the game, only the strength of Ben Batalha denied Warragul a bigger lead at half time. A wake up call from Matt, a better wet weather strategy and the resulting space allowed our skills to surface. James Whelan hit targets often, Jim Reeves, Ryan Thatcher, Shaun Day ran from contest to contest. Hard bodied Jamie McIntosh and Mitch Dignan matched the Gulls strengths and Nick Wozniak and Jack Tatterson are an awesome key forward pairing. This week club stalwart Ray Jacobs turns 90, conditions were too bleak for him on this day but he would have been proud of the efforts of our 3rds and 4ths. He loves unselfish players and the sight of youngsters Tom Thatcher, Mac Huts, Declan Scriven and Lachie Hicks returning to the field after washing the mud off their sodden shorts, socks and boots - just a new number on their dry jumper. It would have warmed his heart. Happy birthday Ray. Thatcher and Scriven were award winners in the 4ths with the two Ethan's Aurisch and Albrecht and Curtis Cook. The 3rds best were Shane Atkinson, good balance, a competitive nature and deceptive pace helpful in the wet -Mitch Harrigan, Max Gravener and Andy Veale gave a good account of Maffra's spirit. Captain Josh Edey a highlight in a year that has been beyond us. This week we welcome Traralgon to the Eyrie, hopeful of a good crowd to see two of the archest rivals of the 21st century. In our only loss on the (slippery) courts for the day, A grade copped a devastating six-goal loss in a crucial match with the Gulls, in impressive form two weeks out
from finals. The the first whistle not only signified the start of the game, but an aggressive downpour of hail and sleet. Coco Henry managed quick hands and feet under the goals despite nightmare conditions, while semiregular Amelia Charlton attempted to stem phenomenal shooting by the Gulls’ goalers. With the loss, we slip quietly back into the shadows, dropping from fifth to sixth, and will need to prepare carefully and thoroughly to pull off upset victories against second placed Traralgon and third placed Moe in the last two rounds. Our B graders put on a performance to be proud of – finishing 13 goals up. Mikki Callahan and semi-regular Leyla Berry put on their usual phenomenal show in goals, with quick-thinking and quick hands. It will be difficult to predict a B&F winner for this team, with integral performances by every player each week. C grade continued their awesome form with another notch on their belt, as a minor premiership presents itself within reach – it seems likely that will be determined in the final round against second-placed Traralgon. Maddie Ballinger stood out in midcourt, while Rach Edey continued good form in goals. Wins all round for our champion junior netballers. Our 17s had a field day – winning 19-62, and likely to be in finals contention yet again. Our under 15s also had a win – 24-37, while our under 13s started the day right with a 21-48 belter.

CLUB NOTES TRARALGON
TRARALGON Netball Report: There were some close margins on the weekend - A Grade couldn’t quite pull off the win against Moe going down by 3 goals and B Grade only won by 1 goal. Our U17s made up for their shock loss to Moe in the first round with a 3 goal win, which guarantees their double chance in finals. The U15s didn’t manage to pull off a win but their recent improvement as a team is a pleasure to watch. The U13 win has cemented their finals inclusion – with a slim possibility of still being able to make the top 3. C Grade have their biggest test this weekend against Maffra, with both teams on equal points and vying for top spot on the ladder. Jnr “Coaches” Awards: U13 – Anesu Gwara, Dempsey Blair & Faith Farmer, U15 – Allyssa Tangi, Alanna Webster & Ella Fothergill, U17 – Lauryn KingChurch, Trax Hanratty & Amy Husson. Snr Awards: C Grade – Sophie Membrey, Tiffany Boatman & Lori Scholtes, B Grade – Claire Thomas, Kristy Jennings & Alyce Murphy, A Grade – Kate French, Stacey O’Brien & Maddie Stockdale. Congratulations to Loren Ponton who plays her 200th open age game for the club this week. Football Report: The split round came at the perfect time for our senior playing group giving some boys the opportunity to get over a couple of niggles they have had. Taking on Moe meant we needed a win to try and secure that important top 5 finish. The boys came out with the intent of getting the job done and played a brand of football we haven’t seen this year. They were excellent and if we can continue with this type of intensity for the next month and a bit, there are some exciting times ahead. A highlight of the senior game was the spectacular mark taken by young defender Bailey Cameron. Many of the old timers around the club have said it was the best they had seen. The end result of this match was a convincing 50 point win. Better players were Haydn Hector, Dylan Loprese and Bailey Cameron. The Reserves were also trying to secure a finals berth and played a really good brand of team football for 3

THE MAROONS ½ quarters. Without any bench rotations from early in the 2nd quarter, the lads tired and eventually came away with a draw. A good result considering Moe have only dropped the one game this season and our boys were out on their feet. Best players were Rick Battista, Lachy McDonald, Jesse Jackway and young Tom Webster who doubled up from the thirds. It was a battle between 1st and 2nd on the ladder with only percentage separating us and Moe in the thirds. This game was expected to be a highlight and it was for the most part with our boys getting the break in the end to win by 4 goals. A great effort in very trying conditions. Best players were C. Ruyters, E. Williams, I. Copland, K. Marsh, J. Palmer, J.Van Iwaarden The fourths continued their improvement by beating another team in the top 5. In very wet conditions, this game was terrific to watch as the skill level from both sides was very high. In a low scoring game our boys came away with an 11 point win. Better players were H. Middleton, L. D''Angelo, C. Doultree, R. McDonald, G. Wood, D. Duncan Congratulations to Nic Quenault who played his 200th open age game for the club last week against Moe. Once again, thank you to all our wonderful volunteers and sponsors that help us out each season. Good luck to all participants taking part today. Go Maroons.
