PAST FINALS WEEK 1s By Paul Carter
5 YEARS AGO … 31 AUG & 1 SEPT, 2013
the “premiership quarter”, lived up to its name as Morwell drew away with seven goals, midfielder Adam Bailey clearly best afield. Both team added five goals in the last term, Morwell’s lead advancing by one point to the final margin of thirty points. Bailey capped his performance with five goals, key forward Ryan Allan kicking four for Morwell. Jason Macfarlane and ruckman Luke Norder also starred for Morwell. Sunday’s match, at Maffra, was a thriller. Moe trailed Maffra to half time until their third quarter burst of seven straight goals, big forward Luke Webber leading the charge with three goals for the term, took them in to the three quarter time huddle as 16 point leaders. Eagles’ teams are never beaten and some key moves by coach Hayden Bugiel paid off. Daniel Stubbe moved into the ruck to counter Moe’s Chris Hancock’s dominance, Ben Coleman moved to the centre and led their revival. Maffra kicked five goals to one to win by a goal, Justin Staley top-scoring for them with six goals. Coleman, David Adams and Stubbe were Maffra’s best, while for Moe Ashley Payne was named best with coach Troy Makepeace leading by example and young Symon Lee showing out.
Morwell opened the 2013 Finals series brightly rattling on five goals in the opening term, Dean MacDonald (3) and Mannon Johnston (2) giving the Maffra defence plenty to cope with. The free scoring continued into the second term, Morwell adding four goals, but as has happened to so many teams, Maffra stormed to a narrow lead with eight goals in the term, Jackson Scott’s free kick plus 50 metre penalty giving the Eagles the lead for the first time in the match. The third quarter defined the match, Maffra kicking four goals in the first eleven minutes of the second half, six for the quarter, to lead by 33 points at the last change. The Tigers rallied in the final quarter, but were off target, kicking 4.7 to Maffra’s 4.1, the Eagles off to the 2nd Semi with a 27 point win. Both key forwards were prominent, Maffra’s Darren Sheen bagging seven goals and Dean MacDonald for Morwell kicking nine, a league record for a Qualifying Final. On Sunday Traralgon had control of the game for three quarters. Wonthaggi’s errant kicking for goal frustrated their efforts. The Maroons led by 19 points at the first break, then by 16 at half time. The Power narrowed the gap with Qualifying Final 5.5 to 4.3, then overtook Traralgon in the last with another 4.8. Dan Morwell 4.2 9.2 16.5 20. 9.129 McKenna was the stand-out forward, kicking seven goals for Traralgon, with Leigh Cummins and Adrian Slottje leading the Maroons’ defence. 10 YEARS AGO … 30 & 31 AUG, 2008 Morwell emerged from Saturday’s Qualifying Final at Garfield as a serious contender for the 2008 premiership. The Tigers and Warragul put on a great display of finals football, the match producing 35 goals. Morwell’s two goal lead at quarter time was reduced to just three points at half time, Warragul, with Leigh Sheehan, Joel Morgan and Desi Barr to the fore, kicking six goals for the term. 20 YEARS AGO … 29 & 30 AUG, 1998 Moe met Leongatha at Warragul for the Qualifying Final. The first term was action packed with ten goals kicked, the Parrots gaining a handy 16 point lead. Moe hit back with three goals to two as the backlines reined in the scoring. The third quarter was where the momentum swung Moe’s way. Leongatha, through Tim Traill, got the first goal of the term, but then Moe took control as they added four unanswered goals to grab a 14 point lead. Leongatha needed to get the first goal of the final term, but it wasn’t to be as Moe kicked the first four to put the issue beyond doubt.

FOOTBALL CLUB
Football Wrap: Welcome to finals. The home and away season is done and dusted and now we move into the finals to determine the best teams in each grade. Our club has had an extremely successful season with 9 out of our 12 teams competing in finals this year. 3 mens footy, 5 netball and our Under 17 girls footy. Well done to all concerned. This season didn’t quite pan out the way we wanted with the under 16’s just missing the finals but the improvement of this team from round 1 to now is incredible and a credit Kev Foley and his support crew. Well done on a great

CLUB NOTES MOE The final round of the home and away season saw both our Under 17 netball and Under 16 football sides secure their finals berth with wins in their respective matches. As the club heads into September we are pleased to announce that we will have nine out of ten teams participating in the play-offs. Football Seniors Despite the loss the Senior team live to fight another day and will face Traralgon in the Elimination final. Last Saturday at Ted Summerton ladder leaders Maffra proved to be too strong across the board as they coasted to victory. The Lions led a small revival throughout the third term but unfortunately it was to no avail. Best players for Moe were Tom Long, Darnell Grech, Charlie Rieniets, Jacob Wood, James Blaser and Joel Bragagnolo, who provided a mildly amusing moment when he could be heard to shout ‘kick the football Thomas’ as his frustrations grew. Reserves You know on Space Jam when the Looney Tunes play the Monstars in the first half? Well, it was a similar experience for the Reserves when they faced off against the only team to have beaten them this season. From the outset it was a rude awaking, as Maffra slammed on three goals to none faster than you could say ‘Aidan Vesty was an underrated Senior player of the early 2010’s’. Moe fought back well in the second quarter to draw level, however the end margin blew out to an alarming level. Best players on the day were Lucas and Calvin Fry, Sean Spiteri, James Heslop, Tom Fleming and Billy-Jack Smith. Under 18’s Got the win for Tawsy’s hard-drive. From start to finish Moe dominated proceedings with some slick transitions and will now look forward to their qualifying final date with Bairnsdale. Best players were Harry Pepper, Josh Galea, Nathan Balfour, Zack Skinner, Luke Tumino and Kane Weir. Under 16’s Won their mini-Elimination final to upset Cooper Burgess and his mates in the other league. After a nervous start, Moe eventually worked their way into the contest and were able to do enough to ensure they extended their season by at least another week. Best players were Luke Summersgill, Joe Skinner, Matt Heywood, Lachlan Rock, Riley Moore and Rohan Demczuk.

MAJOR RAFFLE First prize $38K Audi! SEE A SENIOR FOOTBALL OR NETBALLER FOR A TICKET $50 a ticket, drawn after the last home game. 5 prizes up for grabs. Netball (from Sharon Marie) A Grade Had a thirty-eight goal win in a superb display of netball. The win has now given A Grade an all-important double chance for the finals. B Grade Second place Moe were never in doubt of losing this game and just showed why they have been so dominant this year and were too classy for the Maffra team. B Grade will play third place Morwell in the Qualifying final at Warragul. C Grade Can take some solace out of the match as it was a huge improvement from their first encounter against the top of the ladder Maffra team. C Grade will come up against Wonthaggi in their do or die Elimination final. Under 17’s Won 51 to 46 in what was a gutsy performance after a strong comeback by the Maffra team. This should give the girls a great deal of belief as they head into an Elimination final against Morwell. Under 15’s A great eleven goal win to Moe, which will give them great confidence going into next week's Elimination final where they will play Maffra again. Under 13’s Was always going to be a tough challenge as the team just couldn't form together any real consistent passages of play throughout the game and as a result were playing catch up netball against their opponents. Thanks to all involved for their efforts this season, we look forward to seeing our player’s progress through the ranks.

CLUB NOTES MORWELL WELCOME – A warm welcome to all competing clubs and league officials who attend the elimination final at Morwell Recreation Reserve this weekend. We appreciate the opportunity to host a final and hope you all have an enjoyable weekend of sport. NETBALL - Firstly, congratulations to coach Rachel Allison and her squad of great Morwell netballer’s who will participate in the 2018 finals. The ‘A’ Grade girls finished on top of the ladder and get a week’s rest. Our ‘B’ Grade side play Wonthaggi in what promises to be a great game. Morwell won at Wonthaggi by 2 goals and Wonthaggi reversed that result at Morwell in Round 16. Similarly, in the U17’s our Morwell side won by 5 goals in Round 7 but Moe won by a goal in Round 15. FOOTBALL – Brett Sherriff and the U16 team go head to head against Moe this weekend. After last week’s loss to Traralgon we are confident the talented fourths team will bounce back and go deeper into the finals series. The boys beat Moe by 9 points in the last contest so expect a tough encounter this weekend. SOCIAL – The club Presentation Night is Thursday September 27th at the Morwell Bowling Club. 5:30pm for a 6:00pm start so please save the date and come along and congratulate all winners. The live music will make it a more enjoyable night and we will try and limit Joel Soutar to just the one song! VOLUNTEER THANK YOU – During the year we have tried to acknowledge most of our key volunteers in the weekly record as a small acknowledgement of their outstanding work. CLUB NOTES WARRAGUL Last Saturday was an emotion charged day for the Gulls with our coach Steven Kidd taking charge of the senior side for his farewell game. “Skidda” has guided the club for the last four years and has left an indelible mark on the lives of all he came into contact with. Our President Chris Blackwood is also handing over the reins and these two men have built a platform for the club to maintain and improve on otherwise we have let them down. Things went amiss for their swansong mainly due to a tenacious Bairnsdale side and some bad injuries on the day and unavailability due to injury. However, despite some great footy by the visitors, our lads rallied to miss out by 3 points. Nate Paredes played his normal cracking game with Matt Rennie hard at every contest. Kim Drew was superb again and James Davidson along with Jack Deen were great in defence. The reserves had a day off to tune up for an assault on the finals so our 18s and 16s had a bit of a sleep in. The thirds scoreline may have indicated that they didn’t show up until late but no, they came up against a very strong Redlegs side who put on a fine display. Our better players were Thomas Baum, Marcus Pintaudi, Rhys Chambers, Cooper Robbins, Darcy Norton and Daniel Coates. The under 16s also met a strong Bairnsdale outfit who sit on top of the ladder for good reason. We couldn’t quite match it with the bigger bodied Redlegs who enjoyed a good win. Matt Boyles, Charlie Stern, Jai Serong, Matt

Pecoraro, Connor Ives and Cooper Alger. Both of these underage sides will benefit from the year they have had and it was pleasing to see some excellent senior debuts come out of the under 18 side. Our netballers have improved so much over the last two years and the A and B grade girls thoroughly deserve their place in the 2018 finals with B grade grabbing their spot in the final round. So, this week the September action begins with Western Park hosting the Qualifyers in what will be a great day of country footy and netball. Then it’s off to Morwell to cheer on our Reserves footballers and A and B grade netballers in the Elimination Finals. The Gulls would like to congratulate the Gippsland League on the season and wish all of our mates in both footy and netball the best of luck in the finals race. Drive safely and GO GULLS .

CLUB NOTES LEONGATHA Yep, it's that time of year again already! The home and away season is done and dusted and now the fair dinkum stuff starts. First of all congratulations to all sides that made the finals, the ball is in your court now and if you play your best in the next month you never know what might be possible. To our players and coaches who have missed out on playing finals we thank you for representing the LFNC with such passion and enthusiasm and we can’t wait to be cheering for you again next year. Last week was a pretty tough day at the office as we took on Sale at home. Unfortunately we were clean swept in the netball. The 13s showed they could mix it with the all-conquering Sale team. They traded goals with them for the first half but then Sale up the ante and blew the game open in the third. Both the 15s and 17s fell short, and disappointingly will miss the finals. The C grade girls nearly got there and after last week’s big win the B graders could not repeat the outcome again. And then it was A grade who lost at the death by a solitary goal. The U16s game was a cracker and early neither team could miss the big sticks. It was raining goals and the lads were right in it. Unfortunately the Sale boys took it up a notch and ran out the winners. The U18 game was a similar affair with Sale controlling the game pretty much from the outset. We definitely had our patches where we looked the better side but just could not put enough score on the board to put any real pressure on them. The Reserves play very well even though the opposition was not super. The boys moved the ball well and ran hard all day, making the most of the conditions for a big win. The Senior game started off at a hot pace and the early signs were that Sale
was ‘on’. But as is the way Carbs gave the boys a little fine-tuning at the quarter time break and the
lads switched right on there after. They ran out 10
goal winners in what looked like a good tune up for the finals.

and we hope they continue this form into the finals. Go Parrots!

The Senior boys headed to Leongatha last week full of hope, but instead they found that with some late withdrawals, we had to rely on some of our young players that had already played thirds. Not the ideal start to our run into the finals. With an uphill battle it was Jumbotron Dessent that again shown the way for our young team and was giving BOG for the day. Leongatha kicked away and won 15.15-99 to Sale’s 6.4-40. Best- Jumbo, B.Mckay, Z.Hurley, A.Quirk, J.Mapleson and K.Martin. With the average age of 45 for the Magoo’s, the old boys put on a great show for the crowd. The only goal kicker for the day was Matthew ‘Chickenman’ McGuiness, showing why he was Sale’s premier ruckman back in the day, the Chickenman was everywhere. Best- S.Anstee, Fuzz Hudson, T.Hector, T.Dessent, S.Anderson and Chickenman. The Junior grades have both made it into the finals and are ready to cause some damage. The U18s who face Leongatha again this week, wanted to show that they are ready to rumble and ran away winning 10.5-65 to 6.137. Best- K.Simpson, D.Barnett, W.Mayne, J.McLAren and J.Ryan. The U16’s also endured a tough game after the early drive to ‘Gatha, but it didn’t phase our boys who are preparing for a finals run that should go deep into September, Sale won 11.7-73 to 10.4-64. Best- J.Hutchins, B.Reid, M.Benson, W.Mckinnon and L.Sutherland. Well done to our Juniors for both making it into the Finals and goodluck. What a way to finish off the season with a clean sweep for our netballers with 6 wins last weekend in Leongatha. Our superstar under 13 girls were challenged in their first real test for the season however they showed they knew how to respond when the pressure was on with a hard fought 15 goal win. Together with the under 15 girls they will have the week off after finishing on top of their respective ladders after

CLUB NOTES MAFFRA Our junior teams finished off their year with battling losses to finals bound Moe but it was revealed on Friday night that Maffra had been in the grip of a baby drought early this century. In 2004 the national government became aware and introduced the 'baby bonus', the subsequent surge has seen Maffra now fielding two U14, two U12 and three U10 being managed by some of the biggest names in Maffra football. Again we had, even with the assistance of some brave 13yos, just 16 players and again our team leaders made it a contest all day but this time they didn't have that support. Cousins Sam Berry and Mac Huts had numerous intercepting marks, Tom Thatcher too, Curtis Cook fought manfully against their bigger boys, U 14's Seb Pendergast created a goal off some classy work at half back. We will be back again next year. Likewise the U18, although this time our forward entries were more numerous but Moe's defensive numbers exceeded ours. Individual rewards will never replace team success but team success will never replace individual integrity. We can be proud of our boys - while defeat was more than likely in all away trips this year this core group have remained solid. This was not our time but we will all be more resilient in our life with these lessons. Second placed Moe were keen on making our Ressies accountable, it was a blessing that we had independent umpires because they sent off a pair of scrappers in the first ten minutes. We are no longer a team of kids, we can fend for ourselves and we've won in the wet. This team didn't have a passenger, in fact we had a number of players who played like freight trains. Ryan Auld completed his recovery time adding another tall to our bow, Lachy Carmen looks destined to make his mark as a senior defender and those on the cusp of senior selection are making it harder to be a selector. In any senior contest a team must consider their opponent as a possible winner and have a method which includes defence. Kicking the first three goals is a great start but over the course of the contest it was our defence that won the day. It gives us a week off for both our finals contenders, to build our fitness and spirit, to check out the likely opponent the go through the process again. Our A graders will enjoy finals from the sidelines, after they lost their last game of the season. Finishing one place short of the top five, the girls are devastated after a tough season of injuries and absences plagued the otherwise competitive side. Last weekend, we missed Meg Gordyn and Emma Allman to VNL commitments and it showed on the scoreboard. It was an endurance test for Meg Cromb and Sarah Luke in defence, who managed plenty of intercepts, and wing defence Paige Biddle, who effectively shut down Moe’s feeding, but we had some
trouble capitalising on these turnovers, and the ball came back as quickly as it went down. At least the A graders won’t lonely during finals – B grade also bowed out in the final round, sliding into sixth spot after a gutting loss to Moe. Defender and 2017 C grade best-andfairest Renee Potts took out the awards, and looks a hot favourite for this year’s B grade best-and-fairest. The girls have had a great season, but a couple of narrow losses just managed to squeeze them out of the top five. Well done on a highlycompetitive season B grade. In happier news, our four other grades have all had phenomenal seasons, and will be repping the red and black on court during the finals series. Maddy and the C graders finishing the season on top of the ladder, with only one loss, giving them a wellearnt weekend off, after a win against Moe. Goalers Jemma O’Brien and Anna Gaw earnt the awards with pin point accuracy in goals. After a five goal loss to Moe, the under 17s finished in third, and will play in the qualifying final at Warragul. Awards went to Ella Schact who held strong in defence and Maddie Davis’ quick hands in midcourt. After a loss and a win respectively at Moe, our 15s and 13s will do us proud in the elimination final at Morwell. Our juniors are proving an asset to the club, and their enthusiasm for the sport brings a renewed passion to the Eagles. A special person in our club has turned 90 in Gwen Carrolan. Gwen still hosts our supporters’ afternoon tea at home games. She has given more than 60 years service to the Eagles. A full report can be found on our Facebook page. You have a thousand friends Gwen, all of them dressed in our colours, waiting for a hug.

We finished the home and away season by hosting Wonthaggi at Drouin. The game was played in the best weather for many weeks. It was pleasing result which shows we can put wins together when we play our best football. The senior game result of a 26 point win over Power was because we took our chances and were able to sustain our intensity throughout the game. We wanted to finish with three wins in a row and our sustained pressure gave us that win. Best players were: Liam Anderson (Barry Plant Award), James McKellar (Middels) , Clayton Kingi (Family Hotel ), Bob McCallum (Kim’s Kitchen ) and Wayne Morris (Steam and Riddles). Our senior vote count was incredibly close with Bob McCallum winning the Ablett medal by one vote over Eddie Morris. In third place was Jeb McLeod. The Reserves faced a solid Wonthaggi team who were able to take an early lead. We were again not able to bridge the gap and but worked hard to narrow the gap to 26 points at the end of the game. We were very competitive but were not able to get the win. Best players were: Damian Allison (Select Office ), Will Bryce (Community Bank ) , Luke Ferguson ( Middels Award ) , Brad Glover (Drouin Gourmet Café ) and Simon Gardiner ( Family Hotel Award). In the Reserves Hamilton medal vote count Jayden Fairlie won with 32 votes, with Shaun Straka second on 30 votes and Kurtis Harper third with 26 votes. Our under 16 side started slowly against top placed Power who got out to an early lead but our young Hawks fought back well to be only two goals down at quarter time. It was Wonthaggi’s size and bulk that allowed them to take control of the game but as usual our young hawks were tough at the contest and fought the game out bravely. The improvement of so many players is showing through in the last couple of games. Best players were: Lachie Jagoe (Select Office Award), Dallon Jeffrey Molan (Intersport) , Jahmain Harrison (Intersport ) , Trent Kearney (Community Bank ), Angus Hales (Community Bank) and Jack Fraser ( Jakk’s Pizza). Our Club person of the week is another hardworking Committee member and past player Brendan Butler. Brendan joined the Committee last year and is one of our vice presidents and helps out in many ways. This includes being senior team manager, roster coordinator and a handy helper behind the bar at functions. He is a positive person to have around the club. We really appreciate Brendan’s contributions to our club. He is our Drouin Family Hotel Club Person of the Week. We are looking forward today’s return game against Wonthaggi today and hope we can finish the season with another win.
