WORKSAFE WELCOME TO SEASON 2018 As the cooler months start to creep in and daylight savings comes to an end, excitement is brewing across country Victoria for the return of community football. Whether you are playing, coaching, umpiring, volunteering or cheering on your team from the sidelines, the month of April brings with it a feeling of optimism and anticipation for what lies ahead for season 2018. The rapid growth in female football has continued to reach new heights, with the establishment of 392 new teams in 2017 bringing the total number of female teams to 747 across the state. We look forward to seeing more females pull on the boots and showcase their skills throughout country Victoria the year. Season 2018 will see the roll out of a number of new initiatives, including the implementation of the AFL’s new NAB AFL Auskick 2.0 program, an expanded Victorian FIDA Football League competition for players with an intellectual disability, as well as the acquisition of seven dedicated full time V/Line Umpire Academy Program Managers who are now responsible for driving umpire development regionally. The work carried out by Region Commissions, in conjunction with leagues and clubs, to embrace these initiatives, along with the many other programs conducted across the state is vital to ensuring country football is in good stead for continued growth in the future. Country football’s contribution to the national game was strengthened last year, with 26 male and six female players from regional Victoria drafted to AFL and AFLW clubs. This achievement is a credit to both the talent pathway programs and the local community clubs

which continue to provide the foundation for the next generation of stars to reach the elite level. In other football news, AFL Victoria is delighted to announce the return of the WorkSafe AFL Victoria Community Championships at the MCG. For the second year in a row, the highest ranked country representative match will be played at the MCG as part of the 2018 AFL Country Game between Geelong and Essendon. The Ballarat Football Netball League and Goulburn Valley League (7 v 8) will run out on the hallowed turf in season 2018, while the leagues’ Under 19 representative match will be played at Punt Road Oval. In addition, the current number-one-ranked Geelong Football Netball League will be looking to secure its third straight Community Championships title when it lines up against the Eastern Football League at Etihad Stadium. The match will be a curtain raiser to the Round 9 AFL game between St. Kilda and Collingwood on Saturday night. This is a fantastic occasion for some of community football’s best senior players to run out and showcase their skills on the game’s biggest stage and provide the opportunity for city and country football fans to come together and celebrate all that is good in country football. Last but not least I would like to wish all players, coaches, umpires, volunteers and administrators the best of luck for the season ahead- I hope it is a successful one for all involved. 5 YEARS AGO - 13TH APRIL, 2013 Four of the top five from 2012 scored first up wins as the 2013 season got under way. The fifth, Traralgon, fought out a tight match with Sale. The 2012 Premier, Sale, was challenged on their home turf by the Maroons, just three points separating the two at half time. With Kane Martin and Jacob Schuback ever-busy in the midfield, the Magpies edged away to win by 22 points. Leongatha gained early control over their match with Bairnsdale, leading by almost six goals at the half time break. Tom Marriott played a match-winning game on ball with Cade Maskell showing good form across half forward. Aaron Hillberg top-scored for the Parrots with five goals, Mark Sellings replying in kind for the Redlegs. Darren Sheen starred with ten goals for Maffra against Moe. Early inaccuracy from the Eagles prevented them from taking a bigger lead, but the issue was put beyond doubt with eight third quarter goals. Morwell was forced to slug it out at Wonthaggi and returned home with a hard earned 33 point win. Warragul was too strong for Drouin on the Sunday, Ben Drew kicking five goals for the Gulls and Assistant Coach Mark Collison combining well with star ruckman Matt Gray.
term when the Gulls added 4.6 while keeping the Tigers scoreless. Nick Edney and Aaron Rhodes were solid for Warragul, while Andrew Petrou and Liam Visser stood out for the Tigers. Garfield had a battle on their hands against an incredibly accurate Traralgon. The Stars trailed by 16 points at the final change (7.9 to 11.1), coming home strongly with five unanswered goals in the final term. Coach Ben Soumilas led from the front for Garfield. The Sunday game between Sale and Maffra lived up to the usual hype with 32 goals scored between them. Maffra gained the early lead, Sale hitting back with seven goals in the second term to lead by 11 points at the long break. They both added 5.4 in the third term to maintain the status quo, then ground it out in the final thirty minutes, Maffra reducing the final margin in Sale’s favour to just seven points. Drouin had the bye.

ROUND 1 STATISTICS By Paul Carter Leongatha v Wonthaggi (Friday, 30th March)
Lowest scores: Warragul 0. 5. 5 (2014) Morwell 3. 3. 21 (1995) Greatest winning margin: Warragul 74 (1976), Morwell 174 (2014) Most goals (match): Warragul 12 A.Singline (1976) Morwell 13 D.Preston (1999) Notes: These teams played a pair of hard fought out matches in 2017, each winning on the other’s home ground by similar margins. It was Morwell’s first win at Western Park for three years, while Warragul’s win at Morwell was their first there since 2008. Both teams have lost some key personnel over the break, Morwell probably more so than Warragul. After the great strides forward made by Warragul in 2016, last season would have been bitterly disappointing for them. Nothing short of a finals place will suffice this year for the coaching staff, players and their fans. After their back-to-back flags of 2013-14, Morwell made the finals last year for the first time in three years and they will be hoping to build on that in 2018.

Leongatha won all four meetings in 1997-98 and Wonthaggi replied in kind with four on the trot with the 1999 Qualifying Final and all three meetings in 2000. Fans of both teams will have watched with keen interest the comings and goings over the Summer recess. There are some key names missing from the Parrots’ line-up, but they always seems to have stars popping up, while the Power seems quite stable from last year. A huge Good Friday crowd will be on hand to witness a classic opening to the 2018 season.

A seventh straight win seemed to be on the way when Traralgon held a three goals lead at the half way point, however the Redlegs fought back hard and snatched a one point win. This was Bairnsdale’s first win over Traralgon for five years and broke a nine game losing streak that they had against the Maroons. The news of the off-season was the reported return of several players to Bairnsdale and some key ins and outs for Traralgon. This twilight game should draw a huge East Gippsland crowd which will be thoroughly entertained.

The remarkable statistic is that Maffra’s winning of the last six games between them has drawn the ledger even at 139 wins apiece with three games drawn. Fans attending these “Battles of the Birds” are guaranteed of a “nothing left in the sheds” match where neither team lets up until the final siren has sounded. Maffra had two sizable wins against their old foe in 2017, margins of 92 and 46 points, but the scores should be much closer than that this afternoon in front of the traditional huge crowd.

CLUB NOTES WONTHAGGI We welcome all our Players, members and friends to today's game. Over the time since the end of last season, our Football/Netball Club has undergone a transformation, with new looking Social rooms and Home rooms. We would like to thank T.S Construction for the work. A special appreciation must go to Mal Lindsay for his commitment of having the works finished asap. We had our first test run on Friday, with approximately 160 people there. The new kitchen got a great work out as well.

The win, loss ratio was not our focus in the 2017 season. Focus was on development and growth across all grades, this was critical for our sustainability and we had extremely clear direction at the end of 2017. A new approach was formed for our pre season, including many of our Melb. based players participating in the AFL 9's comp. and coming away with the premiership cup. Our local squad including U16's and U18's participated in the GippSport organised AFL9's comp.Including Dalyston FNC and Bass Coast Breakers women's teams. With over 90 participants. The new year has seen positive growth in all areas, including the introduction of 6 quality players to our senior squad. All grades are looking forward to the challenges ahead, and today is

CLUB NOTES WARRAGUL The Gulls welcome back all of our mates from across the League in the hope you are well rested and as excited as we are about another great year of country footy and netball Gippsland League style. The President is back in the saddle for another year as are our senior coaches with some new faces along for the ride as well. We welcome Dave Carpenter to the Gulls who will guide our under 16s this season and we wish him well. He has improved numbers at his disposal and the lads are very keen. Another welcome addition is Dean Hendrikse who returns after a stint with neighbouring clubs and his knowledge and fitness expertise has already shown benefits. In the break our footy department have been very focussed and with that we welcome the following players some of whom are returning to the fold. Mitch Nobelius, James Davidson, Tim Davine, Harley Nobelius, Luke Di Ciero, Tyssen Morrow, Jack Deen, Luke Thompson, Mark Bradley, Michael Coombes, Anthony Alderuccio, Matt Ross, Hayden LawsonPepper, Sam Whibley and Lachlan Miller have been training well and we welcome them to the Gulls family. To our supporters, please make yourselves known to these young men and make them feel right at home. In addition to that, Tom Muir and B J Sheehan are virtually new recruits after interrupted starts last season and that is also a massive boost. Steven Kidd has proven to be a master coach and has extracted the best out of all on the list. I think they have become better players and as importantly better people under his guidance. With the excellent recruitment undertaken, our depth is obviously going to strengthen giving reserves coach Scott McIntosh much more
to work with and enjoy some richly deserved success. Our under 18 side will benefit under the joint coaching of Tom Muir and Nate Paredes who will inject some enthusiasm and flair into these young mens games and they will have lots of fun along the way. Our netballers will continue on from last year under Lexie Fenton with Ruby Riley and Kellie Sheehan in support. They improved remarkably last year and with the addition of Rebecca O’Halloran, Rachael Chandler and Matisse Olsson and the welcome return of Renee Cook, Mel Pitt and Sarah Hams they will figure in finals action we are sure. Round 1 sees the first Good Friday clash where we welcome the Morwell Tigers to our season launch. We wish all in the GL a successful start to the 2018 season and remember stay safe on our roads this Easter.

CLUB NOTES MOE Round 1 vs Drouin A warm welcome to all our members, players, supporters and sponsors to another season of Gippsland League football and netball, we trust you have all had an enjoyable summer break and are looking forward to seeing Moe compete strongly in 2018. An especially warm welcome to the team at Greenham Ag, who are on board as our new major sponsor for 2018. First and foremost we must acknowledge our premiership teams from 2017. Congratulations to Krissy Travers’ B Grade netball and Lachlan Sim’s Under 16 football teams who took home their competitions titles. Throughout the interim the club also hosted two AFL matches and our thanks go out to all who assisted in the running of these events. We were once again able to exhibit our premier facility which is no doubt one of the best in country Victoria. Furthermore, the gymnasium has also been upgraded as has the scoreboard to now feature digital team names. Another major event to happen during the off season was the establishment of a Youth Girls team. Under the pioneering of well known club identity Dean Abbott, Moe now has an all-encompassing football program. The Youth Girls will play a handful of games under lights after the men’s senior game at Ted Summerton and we wish them all the best in their inaugural season. The team will be coached by Chris Frazer.

In the Reserves Daniel Earl also comes into his third season whilst in the Under 18’s Rick Galea will again oversee the next crop of talent coming through. The Under 16’s will be coached by Craig Skinner, who has served a lengthy apprenticeship under Lachlan Sim and is more than ready to take on the role. Clinton ‘The Reverend’ Taylor will again fulfil the role of junior co-ordinator. On the court the club has appointed Melissa Rock as Netball director, Lisa Shields and Jodi Galea as its senior and junior co-ordinators as well as Peter Moody as its A Grade coach. Krissy Travers is back for another term as B Grade and Under 17’s coach, and Renee Blandford will take on the C Grade role. Senior player Shannon Freeman has accepted the job as Under 15’s coach, whilst Debbie Paul will oversee things in the Under 13’s. In the boardroom our team consists of

NETBALL NOTES Kylie Proctor has been reappointed as A Grade Coach for 2018 season. Stacie Gardiner (B Grade) and Alison McArthur (C Grade) complete our senior coaching panel. April Bethune and Stacie Gardiner (17s), Lisa Biffin (15s) and Abbey Tyrrell and Alison McArthur (13s) round out our junior panel. It has been a very positive Pre-season at the club with the inclusion of several new players across all grades, return of former premiership players and many juniors making the transition into seniors look easy. A focused pre-season and practice match against Ellinbank has set us up for the season ahead. Everyone is eager for the season to start and are looking forward to our round 1 clash against Moe. Congratulations to Stacie Gardiner, Ruby Pratt, Ella Henderson, Kylie Proctor & Alana Rippon who were all a part of the premiership team for Gippsland League in the Eastern Zone Premier Netball Competition over the off season.
CLUB NOTES BAIRNSDALE It’s here Redlegs, season 2018! Welcome to all our new Football & Netball Families it has been a huge offseason with plenty of positives across the board. Both Football & Netball departments have been working hard to be ready for today and no doubt will kick the season off with a solid start. We are now entering the 8th year in major league football with the TRFM Gippsland League whilst continuing our presence in East Gippsland football with our juniors in the Dwyers Toyota BDJFA. We are very pleased to have appointed 2017 senior assistant Darren Martin as our senior coach, initially for the coming two seasons. Our recruiting mantra has been local talent living in the area and our local players have responded. An influx of leading players from the EGFNL has seen our entire 2018 playing list sign two-year contracts in support of the Club’s, and Darren’s vision. To complement our list, we have also added some former locals with VFL experience to the mix. Shaun Wyatt will return to football in the region as co-coach alongside Darren. We see this as a major coupe for the club. Our A Grade Netballers will again be coached by sisters Ashleigh & Katelyn Wheeler. Congratulations to a few of the 17 & Under girls being selected in the A Grade side, including 2017 15 & U Hot Shots winner – Isla Pearson, Paris Dunkley and new recruit Alison Dwyer. The continued development of our juniors and a systematic promotion of youth, adds depth to Redlegs netball. We have, including our Youth Girls team, around 120 footballers and 60 netballers representing our region and testing themselves against the best in Gippsland. Our Junior football and Auskick programs, as well as our junior development teams
competing in the Bairnsdale netball Thursday night competition, see our Club currently providing opportunity in sport for around 310 participants. This number will continue to grow in 2018 with the addition of a NetSetGo program for beginning netballers and a Women’s football team to also compete in the Gippsland competition in conjunction with our Youth Girls. We have seen some improvements around the Club Facilities with the playing surface getting some much needed maintenance & new Netball Shelters underway. Let’s keep up to date with what’s going on around the club by following the Facebook page and Team App. Have a great day everyone!! Go Redlegs. Memberships Includes entry to Home Games $100 - Single Adult $220 - Family Membership (Includes 2 Adults and up to 4 Children) $45 - Pensioners Social Calendar Round 1 @ Home Hot Roast Rolls & Live Music following today’s matches - everyone welcome.

TRARALGON FOOTBALL CLUB
We welcome all new players, parents and supporters and hope they all enjoy their year and welcome back all our players, parents and supporters from last year. The club wishes Matt Northe all the best for the 2018 season as he has been selected in the Nth Melbourne VFL squad. Matt will be sorely missed as he has been a great player for us over many years. We also congratulate Nick Lowden, Will Broadbent, Tye Hourigan & Harvey Neocleous to the Gippsland Power TAC cup U18 squad. In the off season we have recruited a few players including Cody Wilson, Jesse Jackway & Connor Ambler returning from the VFL. We also look forward to having Cory Stockdale and Adrian Slotje who are both returning from injury last year. We have had a few players leave but have a great group of players coming into senior ranks from the U18 premiership side last year. There are also a few other senior players coming in from other leagues to test themselves at the higher level. We look forward to a great year in both the senior and reserves sides. The U18 side once again coached by Grant Little, look like they once again have a strong squad and will challenge for a top 3 finals spot and look to defend their title from last year. The U16 squad is not as big as in past years but look very talented and with Kevin Foley once again at the helm will be a chance to be right up in contention again this year after making the grand final last year.

CLUB NOTES MAFFRA The club was a major focus of a magazine featuring Maffra - a beautiful town by local business 'Gippsland the lifestyle.' If a supporter wants a copy contact "thelifestylemagazine.com.au" Editor Doug Pell was an unattached spectator at the Grand Final, the first experienced by him and he came away besotted by the contest. "This Grand Final had the lot and Maffra were a considerable amount behind at first break, but they fought back and nearly won, as the nervous faces in the Leongatha crowd were testament to this. Wayne's coaching was magnificent, his players walked through the wall for him, they literally crawled to the finish line, when it was time for Wayne to give his speech he was magnanimous in his praise for Leongatha Premiership Coach Beau Vernon and for his own players." In Pell's own words 'this is what should be broadcast by the AFL industry to portray how competitive sport should be honoured - the respect shown between each club - on and off field, players and supporters - for the spirit of the game was totally inspirational." Our U17 girls continue their outstanding run of premierships - we are in the presence of some champions - no doubt.
The strength of family connection always has been Maffra's strength May, Lestrange, Donnelly, Gray, Gieschen, Shingles - history still represented now. Others have been attracted by the character of our administrators, some of whom are champion players of the club Pleydell, Hill, Linaker, Alvin, Vardy, Gravener and they too have contributed to the bloodlines. Not to forget the Butcher contribution - So on to 2018. Sadly it’s seen the passing of Marg Jacobs loving
Completing an outstanding first year under a new administration our presentation night held in the Memorial Hall was an inspired move by the committee, bought to light by Pam McGrath's life membership presentation and her beloved Ressies, when they initiated a standing ovation of every member, including the other twenty life members present. EZPNC REPORT In the off season our representative netball sides have been competing in the newly created Eastern Zone Premier Netball Competition. In 2018 the EZPNC was played out in Sale and Churchill. Within this competition the most promising players, umpires, and coaches from across the region will come together to participate in an elite, high-quality competition. Talented netball players had the chance to be selected in their association’s representative team, at the U/15, U/17 or Open level with competitions running in all three of these divisions. The
competition was formed to connect the gap between grassroots netball and representative level netball. Players had the opportunity to play with and against the best talent from the region without the barrier of traveling to Melbourne. TRFM Gippsland League featured four sides including two Open teams , 17U & 15U. All teams made the finals which were played in Churchill last week. TRFM Gippsland League claimed all three titles with our Blue Open side defeating their younger counterparts GL Red in the Open final.

NETBALL REPORT The stage is set for the 2018 TRFM Gippsland League Netball season. There has been plenty of change in personnel in the A Grade division with well over half of the clubs featuring new coaches. Reigning premiers Traralgon have regained former player Caitlan Ponton who is also taking over the coaching role from 2017 premiership coach Kate French. Morwell are another side who has had plenty of movement with Rachel Allison taking up the role of A Grade coach for 2018. The Tigers have lost a few key players from their preliminary final side in 2017 including Sam Pearce & Lexi Bowe but have picked up Daisy Hill from Traralgon who will help out Claire Allison in the goal ring. Drouin will feature a new look side with Christie Edwards due to miss a chunk of the season and premiership players Karina Proctor and Jessie Hedley moving on. Warragul are a side to look out for in 2018. After narrowly missing out on finals last year the Gulls have bought in star Renee Cook who recently took out the MVP Award in the Open division of the Eastern Zone Premier Netball Competition. Round 1 features an interesting fixture with Good Friday games up for grabs. The new look Warragul side will be pressing
Morwell to get their season off to a flyer. Leongatha and Wonthaggi by all reports are two of the younger sides this season and will be eager to impress first up. The Parrots snuck into the finals last season however Wonthaggi have been one of the dominant junior sides over the past few years. Moe and Drouin is perhaps the pick of the games with the young Lions side featuring plenty of talent including elite young goaler Georgia Moody and VNL defender Shannon Freeman, looking to take it up to one of the perennial top sides. Both sides will be looking to play finals and the result should give an indicator of what the Hawks could do in season 2018. Bairnsdale have a tough start against the reigning premier. The Red Legs have some young talented players and early in the season is the time to strike. The Maroons will have pencilled this in as a must win. In the final match of the round Sale play Maffra on Sunday 8th April. 2017 Sale coach Jo Ballinger will be on the Eagles side in 2018 as Sale chose to appoint new coach Mel Johnson. Both sides missed finals in 2017 and need to beat teams from the bottom five if they are to push for finals action in 2018.
