TRARALGON V BAIRNSDALE
PAST ROUND 10's By Paul Carter
5 YEARS AGO … 22ND JUNE, 2013 Wonthaggi took over Morwell’s second rung on the ladder when they prevailed in a hard fought encounter at the Tigers’ home ground. Morwell’s first half, where they could manage just two goals, was their undoing as they outscored the Power six goals to five after the long break. Sale was impressive in its win over Traralgon, the Magpies slamming on eight third quarter goals to put the issue beyond doubt. Joel Wallace and Luke Collins starred for the Magpies, with Traralgon’s Matt Lewellin untiring in defence. Bairnsdale maintained contact with the top five with a great win at Leongatha. Leading by just three points at the final break, the Redlegs, led by James Gibbs (5 goals), powered home with five final quarter goals. Maffra shattered any hopes Moe had of causing an upset with ten first quarter goals, Darren Sheen equalling the league record with seven of those ten goals on his way to a personal tally of ten. Kel Porter and Daniel O’Brien were unstoppable in the midfield for the Eagles. On Sunday, Warragul saw off a final quarter run by Drouin to win by ten points. The Gulls, with Callum Shiels and James Davidson in top form, had established a thirty point lead by the final break. Shiels top-scored for Warragul with five goals.

10 YEARS AGO … 21ST JUNE, 2008 Ladder leader Sale’s 82 point thrashing at the hands of Maffra reverberated throughout the WGLFL. That Maffra beat Sale was not the shock, but rather the manner in which it was delivered. The Eagles got the early lead to establish a 17 point advantage by the half time break.
18
Nick Hider and Gary Jones inspired the Eagles as they slammed on seven goals in the third term and another nine in the final quarter. Adrian Burgiel and Daniel Stubbe each kicked five goals for Maffra, Sale’s percentage also taking a hammering, down by 22 percentage points. Desi Barr and Ryan Davey controlled the centre battles against Morwell as Warragul fought their way to a 16 point win in wintry conditions. It was a likewise low-scoring affair at Moe, the luckless Leongatha remaining on one win for the season as they went down by three points, adding just one goal for the second half. Garfield effectively ended Traralgon’s hopes of making a run for the finals with a strong 35 point win. The Maroons had jumped out to a 31 point quarter time lead, but were held to just two goals after the first break. The Soumilas brothers, Andy and Ben, were named as best for the Stars, with Tom Marsh kicking four goals. Drouin had the bye.

20 YEARS AGO … 27TH JUNE, 1998 Maffra’s thrilling three point win over Sale was the headline of the round. With six goals in the first quarter, Maffra gained a handy lead, but the Sale defence held firm for the following two quarters, keeping the Eagles to a single goal. At this stage, three quarter time, Sale held a seven point lead. The Magpies extended this to hold what seemed a match-winning 22 point lead half way through the final term. Maffra rallied to kick the last four goals of the game in the final eight minutes to “steal” the match. The other three games went as expected, Traralgon’s domination of the league evident as they piled on 24 goals against Warragul, Grantley Switzer leading the way with nine goals. Leongatha had the game in its keeping at Morwell as they led at the final change by 27 points, taking it out to a final winning margin of 31, “Billy” Clarke and Al Fixter in control of the midfield for the Parrots. Darren Wheildon’s 12 goals led the Wonthaggi Blues on a goal spree against Bairnsdale. They had quarters of 4, 9, 4 and 9 goals to boost their percentage with a 167 point win. Moe had the bye.

30 YEARS AGO … 25TH JUNE, 1988 Maffra gave Traralgon their biggest threat to their unbeaten record when they stormed home with five final quarter goals, only to come up ten points short. Traralgon had corrected a quarter time deficit with a seven goal to two second quarter, Russell Northe, Greg Morley and Allan Jennings controlling the midfield for the Maroons. Maffra’s revival, led by Geoff Raven and ruckman Peter Geddes, almost ended Traralgon unblemished record. Eighth placed Moe caused the round’s upset when they travelled to Warragul and, with a second half that produced eight goals to the Gulls’ three, turned an eight point half time deficit into a 16 point win. Brett Jennings continued his brilliant form for Moe to be named as their best, well supported by Roger Larkin. Sale’s term of six unanswered goals in the third quarter of their match against Leongatha was pivotal in their 19 point win over the Parrots. Brendan Hogan was best afield for Sale with youngster Justin Cashman returning from injury to kick five goals, along with Jasmin Baryczka. Morwell gained the early lead against Churchill, then built upon it to win easily, Rod Taylor leading the goalkicking with five. Bairnsdale had a percentage booster against TTU, crowning their win with ten goals in the final quarter.

40 YEARS AGO … 17TH JUNE, 1978 The top two teams, Yallourn/Yallourn North and Traralgon, held on to their positions despite being beaten by Warragul and Moe respectively. The first quarter, where Warragul led by three goals, was decisive in the long run as the Gulls held on to win over the Blues by 16 points. Graeme Cook and Geoff McCay were best for the Gulls, with Geoff Kneebone kicking five goals. Neil Brennan and John Sheekey stood out for YYN. The Traralgon Showgrounds was a mudheap, and allowed just ten goals to be scored for the entire match. Traralgon led by seven points at half time, but could only add 1.1 in the second half as the Lions overtook them. Dennis Stevens’ effort in kicking five of Moe’s six goals was amazing in such conditions. Morwell, with David Vogel in top form and Jim Rasmussen kicking six goals, was too strong for Maffra and won comfortably by 28 points. Leongatha’s six goal third quarter broke their game against Sale apart, the Parrots running away with the game by adding a further five final quarter goals. Bairnsdale had the bye.

Coincidentally they won by the same margin, 22 points, as their most recent win there in 2008. The last five games between these two, going back to their first meeting in 2016, has seen the winner alternate – does that mean it’s Morwell’s “turn” today ? Morwell seems to have steadied after their off-season personnel losses, their youngsters now settling in to their Senior roles. Warragul now appears to have close to its best 22 on the park. While the Tigers are unlikely to make the finals this year, they will still be pushing hard in every game, while Warragul knows that it can’t afford to lose to teams below them on the ladder if they are to figure in the September action.
Most goals (match) : Traralgon 10 K.Templeton (1973), P.McCulloch (1993) : Bairnsdale 8 S.McLaren (1988), J.Gibbs (2011) Notes : Traralgon is the team that Bairnsdale has had the most trouble beating since they returned to this competition in 2011. The Redlegs have had just two wins and a draw against the Maroons in that time. This fixture also features the longest present ground hoodoo in the league as Bairnsdale hasn’t won at the Traralgon Recreation Reserve since 1983, their last 22 visits there sending them home empty-handed. Last week’s win over Warragul sets Bairnsdale up as the main contender to the top five sides as we enter the second half of the season. It’s possible that these two may find themselves battling for a finals spot at season’s end, making today’s game vital to their chances.

It’s the longest sequence of one over the other since 2005. They have led the way in the TRFM Gippsland League this year, Sale’s first half season a massive improvement on recent years’ efforts. In their Round 1 encounter this year Sale matched it with Maffra, from all reports, for more than three quarters, but were thoroughly outplayed for a 20 to 25 minute period where all the damage was done. The usual huge crowd will roll up and be thoroughly entertained by all the best that country football has to offer.

The Parrots’ previous best was four wins on end in 1997-98. These two opened the season on Good Friday and the first quarter gave the spectators plenty to enthuse about with twelve goals scored (Leongatha 7.4 to Wonthaggi 5.1). The Parrots defence then held firm, keeping the Power to just another five for the remainder of the match. The fortunes of the two have gone in opposite directions, with Leongatha pressing for a top three spot and Wonthaggi looking for some more wins to prevent them from taking the Wooden Spoon. This is another of the league’s derby type matches and will be played in front of a big South Gippsland crowd.

CLUB NOTES WARRAGUL Last week we ventured to tropical Bairnsdale to take on the Redlegs in a game that may shape our tilt at finals footy this year. Both sides were on equal points but the locals enjoyed a better percentage. They got an early jump on our lads which shaped the rest of the game and despite many entries into the forward fifty the Gulls were inaccurate without taking anything away from the Redlegs effort. The Downtowner award for our best went to Kim Drew who is in sparkling form. Thomas Kelly took out the Intersports award with the ever consistent Matt Rennie off to enjoy the Railway Hotel award. It was welcome back to Sam Russell ( Frankies ) and Luke Di Ciero ( Maloneys Pizza ). Under 18s. Our under 18s were taking on the second placed Bairnsdale and they didn’t disappoint the faithful that took the trip to cheer them on. Our boys took advantage of a good start to the game in going into the main break with a 31 point buffer. Bairnsdale have a good under 18 unit and were expected to come back hard at the Gulls but it didn’t eventuate and the Warragul lads prevailed in a good standard game by 39 points. The Warraview best player was Braxton Ah Mat with Noah Gown snagging 4 and Fraser Phillips having a really good

FOOTBALL CLUB
Well here we are at the half way mark of the season and things are tracking very nicely for our great club.
Round 9 saw us travel to Morwell and we had a very successful day with the Seniors playing for and winning the inaugural Hunter/Stanistreet Cup. The netball girls played on the upgraded courts and these are a real credit to Morwell. Well done. In the footy, our under 16 boys were up against a Morwell side that has been performing very well and in the end it was the mighty Maroons that came out on top winning by 9 points. Best players were Tom Hamilton, Chance Doultree, Matt Scholtes and Harry Middleton. The under 18’s continued their form against a struggling opposition and ran out huge winners but also kept Morwell scoreless. Games like this are difficult sometimes to stay focused but the lads were very disciplined and kept their shape instead of all kick chasing. Better players were C.Ruyters, T. McMahon, L. Noble and J.Van Iwaarden with 7 goals.
We are slowly getting some numbers back from injury and the reserves put out a full side for the first time in many weeks. It must be said we did borrow Tom McMahon from the thirds but it’s the first time we haven’t required 6 or 7 thirds players to double up. In the end it was a strong team performance which got a positive 84 point win. Best players were Darren White, Jake Sands, Riley Loprese, the Barnes twins and Tom Northe.
THE MAROONS against a talented Morwell side. Our U15s had some extra supporters to try to help get them over the line but unfortunately they didn’t barrack hard enough – Morwell won by 4 goals.
Jnr “Coaches” Awards: U13 – Tamia Noda, Dempsey Blair & Sophie Little, U15 – Piper Loprese, Charlotte Di Toro & Alannah Webster, U17 – Lori Scholtes, Molly Van Berkel & Milan Maaka.
As mentioned earlier, a new cup has been struck up for the games against Morwell and our young Maroons were keen to get the win, especially for Terry Hunter who rarely misses a game. No matter where we sit on the ladder a tight contest is always assured and this game was no different. In the end our boys got over the line by 27 points with best players being Lee Stockdale, Jake Vucenovic, Mitch Mustoe, Jackson Hall, Nick Lowden and Kody Wilson. Get behind Rohan Hildebrand this week as he runs out for 100th Senior game of football. Rohan has played a total of 142 club games for TFNC. Congratulations Rohan we all hope you have a ripping game today.
A Grade continued their difficult season when Taylin Gourley went down with an ankle injury in the first quarter. Her already injured sister Ramayer pulled on a dress and borrowed some sneakers to take the court in GS but it just wasn’t enough to put a win on the board
Snr Awards: C Grade – Loren Ponton, Tiffany Boatman & Trax Hanratty, B Grade – Cassidy Smith, Claire Thomas & Alyce Murphy, A Grade – Stacey O’Brien, Caitlan Ponton, & Nic Jennings.
This weekend Bec Duddington (B Grade) will play her 300th Senior Game for TFNC. Check out the feature article on Bec in this week’s GL Record. Congratulations! This week sees us welcome Bairnsdale to our humble home and we look forward to some terrific contests in both netball and footy.
Today is also Ladies day at the footy so any ladies wishing to pamper themselves are most welcome in our social rooms from midday. Cost is $20 entry and there are lots of stalls, activities, food and drinks for all. You don’t even have to watch the footy if you don’t want too. All ladies welcome.
Good luck to all involved this weekend. Go Maroons.

CLUB NOTES BAIRNSDALE Round 9 Queens Birthday weekend at home did not disappoint…..
The weather was perfect, it was a ripper crowd, quality Football and Netball with both clubs getting some wins on the day. The under 16 boys bounced back and got the day going with a solid performance taking the 4 points.
The under 18’s suffered their second loss on the trot but certainly didn’t walk away from the day without improving their craft.
The seniors got the 4 points last week, they set their day up in the first quarter making the most of their opportunities and put some scoreboard pressure on early. Marto was really pleased with 3 out of 4 quarters and will be wanting his charges to pull together a 4 quarter – 22 man contribution this Saturday.
Netballers has a positive day out with the juniors teams each winning their games well. C grade put on a thriller, however unable to take it over the line going down by only a few goals. Robyn Dunkley starring in defence. A grade also showed a fantastic
30
contest against Warragul going down by 3 goals, Alison Dwyer best on court. Up against Traralgon again today, there is anticipation of a tough day with no doubt the girls putting all they’ve got, onto the court.
Cappa the friendly barman took home the load of wood last week, thanks for all that you do Cappa, don’t burn it all at once. It was a big day last Saturday. Thank you to all the volunteers who worked their way through the gate, canteen, bar and game day duties.
Today we head to the Maroons home, if we can put up what we saw last week I reckon we can get a few more points on the board. Carn Redlegs!!!! Have a great day everyone.

We travelled over the hills to Wonthaggi last week for the clash against Power. The weather was good despite being cold earlier in the day. We were hoping for a couple of wins but came home empty handed. Wonthaggi were as keen as we were to get some wins on the board. Overall it was a disappointing result. In the seniors after an even but fiery first term Wonthaggi were able to build a 4 goal lead by half time. Injuries had meant some late omissions from our team including our coach Jordan Kingi. The third term was very even and it was only in the final quarter that we reduced the lead but the Power defended grimly in the last quarter and were able to run out 12 point winners. It was a good game but we just need to take our chances in these tight games. Best players were: Tom Barr (Barry Plant Award), Eddie Morris (Middels ) , Michael Laszczyk (Family Hotel ), Bob McCallum (Kim’s Kitchen ) and Nathan Guy (Steam and Riddles). The Reserves game saw a strong win by Wonthaggi – our boys were depleted by late omissions in the seniors and players needing to move up to play seniors. We struggled to score and were soundly beaten – the final margin was 54 points. It was a disappointing result after the good win the previous week. Best players were: Simon Gardiner ( Select Office Award) ,Owen Walsh ( Middels), Sam Rippon (Drouin Gourmet Café) , Brad Glover (Family Hotel), Dylan Claxton ( Community Bank) and Luke Ferguson (Jakks Pizza). Our young under 16 side had a tough game against the second placed and talented young Power combination. There were many passages of positive play against a high quality opposition. We pushed Wonthaggi in the first half only trailing by 5 points at half time. In the second half Power’s class shone through and a few of our players dropped their heads. Most of our boys fought out the contest to the end. We are hopeful that a win is not too far away. Best players were: Tom Evans (Select Office Award), Lachlan Jagoe (Intersport) , Bailey Prior (Intersport ) , Isaac Fuller (Community Bank ), Logan Corbett (Community Bank) and Shaun Custance ( Jakk’s Pizza). Our club is happy to welcome Eddie Forwood to our team of helpers. Eddie is our Sport Chaplain and is helping out in a range of ways around the club. He is part of the Sports Chapliancy Australia program and we welcome him to our club. Our Club person of the week is Shaun Binney who is a hard working volunteer for our club. Shaun is another of our trainers who puts in long days looking after our players, both football and netball. Shaun has his daughter Tess who also helps out and they make a great team. Shaun is skilfull , reliable and highly regarded for his work by all at the club. We really appreciate Shaun and Tess’s contribution to our club. We greatly value their contribution. We are looking forward todays return game against Moe and are hoping for a better outcome than we had in round 1. CLUB NOTES MOE Round 9 vs Maffra Firstly, congratulations to one of the great men, Michael Camilleri, who played game number 150 last weekend. Camo has been a stalwart around the club for many years, pitching in wherever he can and still making the commitment to travel down each weekend from central Victoria to play. Well done Bossman! Already we have reached the halfway mark of the season, with all of our teams well poised to feature in the post-regular season. Football Seniors (from Tyson Biffin) Went down but the effort was there and the endeavour couldn’t be questioned, just a few turnovers killed us but otherwise there were positives to take out of the game. Best players were James Blaser, Charlie Rieniets, Jacob Wood, Grady Cocksedge, Mitchell Stanlake and James De Virgilio. Reserves As Simmy would say ‘we will play bigger games in the future’. The Lions tried hard all day but were beaten by a team that were ultimately just too good across the board. After honours were shared in the opening term, Maffra were able to take control of the contest, with their pressure inside defensive fifty absolutely outstanding. Best players were the Morrow brothers of Juzzi and Sam, Reverend Taylor, Ryan Farmer, Sean Spiteri, and the ever reliable Michael Parker. Despite the loss, all involved may have found a new favourite umpire, who came into the rooms before the game to give a verbal demonstration of how loudly players were permitted to swear. Under 18’s Have snatched top spot on the ladder following Bairnsdale’s surprise loss to Warragul. With a near full complement of players at their disposal, Moe were able to hold off a determined Maffra to claim victory to the tune of 65 points. Best players were Harry Pepper, Josh Galea, Trent Baldi, Wade Anderson, Ben Van Dyk and Nathan Balfour. Under 16’s Continued their Jekyll and Hyde season with a win away from home. The Lions and Eagles went head to head for the best part of three and a half quarters before two late Moe goals gave them enough breathing space to hold on. There is a modicum in football of the game getting played out naturally the way it does so learning how to win ugly when things aren’t quite going to plan is essential. Best players on the day were Matt Heywood, Jess McGrath, Matt Devon, Lachlan Rock, Tajh Eden and Luke Balzomeris. Best wishes to Brandon Watson, who was taken off late in the game, all at the club wish you a speedy recovery! Netball A Grade (from Peter Moody) Had a good win against a fellow finals aspirant. The girls got off to an aggressive start and were able to hold their lead all game. Defensively our set ups are working very well at the moment. Best players were Emily McInness, Sammy Waters and Georgia Moody. B Grade Sit two games clear in second following a close 49 to 52 win. Provided the team replicates its victories in the second half

C Grade Were outclassed by an undefeated Maffra unit that has scored close to 100 points more than any other team so far in the competition. The Lions still sit in fourth position, with only percentage separating them from the top three. This week’s match against Drouin will be crucial in determining the makeup of the final five at season’s end. Under 17’s Played out a close encounter but were unfortunately unable to come home with the points, going down 53 to 47. The ladder at the halfway mark of the season shows a log-jam of teams occupying the middle parts so the side can ill-afford to drop any matches coming up. Best players last week were Laini Galea and Elise Gordon. Under 15’s Dropped one that would have made life a little bit easier if they hadn’t, going down 46 to 41, and as a result will play Drouin this Saturday for the chance to take a spot in the top three. Best players were Lacey Pedersen and Destiny Mackrell. Under 13’s Remain in the hunt despite going down last weekend. The Lions are currently a game and half out of the top five but will feel confident heading into the second half of the season, where they can hopefully repeat the wins they have already had as well as pinching a few others. Best players were Calli Koch and Hannah Davis.

CLUB NOTES MAFFRA Our players were witness to a glimpse of what makes us strong at Saturday's Hall of Fame induction to the Maffra Football Netball Club after staking their own claims against Moe in a tight battle. Five Maffra men were honoured with the fascination of these young men for their story's. Jim Fitzpatrick, a teenager from Heyfield wanted to take his football to the highest level, achieving that with a premiership at Maffra in 1904, then progressing to Melbourne - in one year he won three premierships Melbourne, Maffra and Heyfield. Interesting! His niece Gwen Webb acknowledged the club for his recognition. Ivan Hewlitt, a true gentleman of our town, achieved two honours on the same evening being presented with his Life Membership as a well. Fittingly Bill Traill (author of The Maffra Football Story working on a sequel) a school friend was able to relate directly the depth of Ivan's reputation within Gippsland. When inter league football was a pathway to VFL recruitment he was a regular competitor. Jim Pleydell was recruited by Carlton from Maffra eventually found a legendary coach distasteful moved to Essendon then returned to Maffra, playing in the 1970 prelim final. He won multiple B&F's here and at Cooee (Tas) belying his unflappable placid character. He returned home, grew with his family and the Briag community, recently becoming a great grandfather. His legacy, and that of his brother Bill (Hall of Fame 2008) are their numerous grandchildren on the paddock and the court. Our first premiership captain in 54 years was the diminutive Nigel Sellings, chosen by first term coach Wayne Butcher for the role in spite of his youth. Nigel had already had an illustrious representative junior career proved to be a peerless choice, captaining the club to a league record number of consequtive wins and finishing his career with five premierships. He is still a major contributor to the club's success and current secretary of the Past Players. Reflecting the history of family succession in our club, in just its third edition our first father son (to go with the Pleydell Bros) duo Ben Robbins joins his dad Graham
after taking an independent path to an AFL career. Recruited by the West Coast Eagles after a year with Power he chose to complete his education before moving west, winning our B&F in that year. He too had courage beyond his physiques entitlement and over three AFL clubs he finished just short of a hundred games but with the respect of his peers. Without doubt his best moment in sport was the 2009 Grand Final and the Nick Horsford Goal after the siren. Our players now know what they too could achieve, We shared the wins on the field and Moe got the two major victories in the Netball contests, apologies to today's award winners but this was special. The Ladies committee, the club executive did a sensational job of catering to the group and George Foggo, Alan Evans, Bill Traill, Ron Reed and the inductees covered themselves in class. As a sad postscript, our usual host of such occasions Alan Clement passed away that night. His involvement at 3TR led to the first Battle of the Birds in 1971, a football match regarded by Kevin Hogan as the best game of country footy he has seen. Vale Alan and peace be with his family and many friends. We are the Mighty Maffra Eagles we are the good old Red and Blacks.

CLUB NOTES LEONGATHA It was with much anticipation that we headed up to Sale to take on the Magpies last week. The Sale FNC have shown they are really on track for some big results this year. So with a number of players unavailable across all grades in netball and football we knew we would have our work cut out for us. In the netball we were quickly reminded of the quality netball that Sale are playing across all grades. The 13s who had been on a sustained winning run found the all-powerful Sale side too much to handle, going down by a big margin. That's ok girls, it gives you someone to chase. The 15s worked hard all game but unfortunately lost out to a Sale side just a little to strong on the day. Ditto the 17s who had also had really good form of late, unfortunately missing a couple of players they found the going tough. In C Grade the Sale girls proved once again to be a well-drilled unit, although they fought hard they were always up against it. The B Grade game was a much closer game, in a seesawing affair the Parrots were in the game all day, unfortunately they went down by a narrow margin. To finish the day the A Grade girls had a great win, following a run of recent good form, their confidence continues to grow. In the football we knew the 16s and 18s would find the going tough. Sale have really improved in both grades and are there abouts on the ladder with our boys. Both the 16s and 18s were short of numbers and were making do as best they could. Although both going down by decent margins the boys never stopped working and gave it their all. The Reserves played a consistent game and slowly pulled away from their opponents as the day went on. The lads are starting to get some real mojo going which would be very pleasing for first time coach Joel Renden. In the Seniors two lads played their first senior games for the Parrots. Well done
42
to Mason McGannon and Tom Evans, hopefully the first of many lads. With a number of changes forced on us for various reasons it was going to be interesting to see how the side responded. After a real arm-wrestle through the first 2 stanzas the Parrots started to get on top. Eventually putting a match-winning margin between the two sides. Even though Sale came home hard late in the game the boys recorded a really important win. Auction players this week were C grade Carly Dwyer. B grade Alicia Garnham. A grade Lauren Redpath. Reserves Louis Riseley. Seniors Ben Willis. Social News We have another away game this week so our next function will be after the Traralgon home game. It will be a celebration of the World Cup with a reverse shuffle included. For more info see our Facebook page or see James Forrester. Go Parrots!

2018 TRFM GIPPSLAND LEAGUE RECORD
PLAYER MILESTONE 300TH SENIOR GAME FOR TRARALGON Today we congratulate Rebecca Duddington (nee Crick), who will play her 300th senior game with Traralgon Football Netball Club. Bec first joined the Traralgon Football Netball Club in 1996 as an 18 year old and played most of her early netball as a GS and GA. Bec had success early on as a member of the 1998 B Grade Premiership team. She went on to coach the B Grade side in 2007 & 2008. She captained the 2009 A Grade Premiership team to a grand final – unfortunately from the sidelines due to an ACL injury. Due to her ACL reconstruction, Bec did not play the 2010 season, but remained at the club to coach B Grade and co-coach A Grade.
Her personal achievements during her time
She was also active off the court during these
