Round 11 – Saturday 23rd June

MORWELL V BAIRNSDALE

INTERLEAGUE INITIAL VIC COUNTRY & VIC METRO SQUADS The top community football talent from across the state will have the chance to don their representative jumpers in the 2018 AFL Victoria Community Cup, following the release of the initial Vic Country and Vic Metro squads. An initial 42-man WorkSafe AFL Victoria Country squad and 34-man Vic Metro side have been announced following their performance in the third instalment of the AFL Victoria WorkSafe Community Championships and taking into account player injuries and availabilities. In addition, an initial 54-player Energy Safe Victoria Country Under 19s representative side has been released ahead of its clash with the Victorian Amateur Football Association in the 2018 Under 19 Challenge Cup. The current highest ranked country competition and former number-one ranked community league Geelong Football Netball League boasts the most representatives in the initial Vic Country squad with ten players, followed by Goulburn Valley Football League and Ovens & Murray Football Netball League with six selections each. The WorkSafe AFL Victoria Country side will once again be coached by AFL legend Danny Frawley, who will be keen to continue Vic Country’s winning form over Metro, after defeating Melbourne’s best by 39-points in their last encounter. Frawley will be pitted against 199-game

16

Footscray legend Brian Royal, who will once again lead Vic Metro’s top senior talent. The number-one ranked Eastern Football League has eight representatives invited to join the initial Vic Metro squad, while players from the Western Region Football League (11 players), Northern Football Netball League (nine players) and Southern Football Netball League (eight players) round out the preliminary squad. Damian Sexton will lead the next generation of country Victoria talent as coach of the Under 19 Energy Safe Vic Country squad for the tenth consecutive year. Goulburn Valley League has secured the most selections in the initial Under 19 squad with nine players, followed by Ovens & Murray Football League and Geelong Football League with eight representatives each. The Under 19 squad will look to claim its fifth consecutive win over VAFA, after securing a tight four point win over VAFA at Frankston Oval last year. The Vic Country vs. Vic Metro showdown will be held at Ballarat’s Mars Stadium on Sunday July 8, with the Under 19 Challenge kicking off at 11:30am, followed by the seniors at 2:00pm. The initial squads will conduct training sessions in mid-June, with the final squads to be released in the lead up to the 2018 AFL Victoria Community Championships.

PAST ROUND 11's By Paul Carter

5 YEARS AGO … 29TH JUNE, 2013 Bairnsdale’s finals aspirations effectively finished with their brave, but unsuccessful, game against Maffra. The Redlegs, with James Gibbs’ five goals leading the way, were in contact with Maffra for two and a half quarters, but then, inspired by Darren Sheen’s eight goal haul, the Eagles drew away to win comfortably. The loss saw Bairnsdale a game and considerable percentage out of the Five. Moe scored their first premiership points of the season with a hard fought win over Drouin. A point down at half time, the Lions kicked five goals to two in the third term to establish a three goal break, which they held to the final siren. James Blaser and Charlie Rieniets kicked four goals each for Moe. Joel Soutar and Lachlan Dowling (5 goals) were Morwell’s best players as they accounted for Warragul. The Gulls’ inaccuracy didn’t help their cause, Warragul kicking 5.1 of their 8.13 in the final term. Traralgon, with Lee Stockdale on target with five goals, took charge of their game against Wonthaggi in the third quarter when they turned a half time deficit of four points into a 26 point lead going in to the final term. Josh Jennings and Tim Northe made sure their forwards were given plenty of scoring opportunities. Luke Collins and Kane Fraser (4 goals) took Sale to a commanding three quarter time lead over Leongatha. The Magpies led by 74 points at the final break. Leongatha bravely fought out the match, kicking six goals to one in the final term to reduce the deficit to 47 points.

Maffra was made to work hard for its win over Leongatha, leading from the second quarter onwards, but never comfortable. Ben Coleman shone in the midfield for the Eagles and Jack Tatterson led the scoring with eight goals. Bob McCallum’s excellent ruckwork led Drouin to a good win over Traralgon. The Hawks were forced to come behind at the final break, kicking six goals to two in the final term to win by 24 points. Morwell and Moe were locked at 7.6.48 apiece at half time, the Tigers adding thirteen second half goals, including eight in the third quarter, to run away with the game. Liam Visser was busy on ball and Andrew Petrou led the scoring for Morwell with five goals, while Troy Makepeace and Chris Hancock combined well at the stoppages for Moe. Sale had the bye.

Warragul celebrated its first game on their new home ground at Western Park with a strong win over Maffra. The Gulls kicked 6.5 to 1.0 to make the early break, with Michael Vick ever busy, well supported by Tony Waters and Graeme Cook. Although somewhat inaccurate in front of goal, Traralgon managed to see off a challenge from the improving Sale side. Robert Johnson and Tom Beveridge led the way for the Maroons in their twenty point win. Morwell overcame an early deficit to get up in a heartstopper to beat Leongatha by a point. The Parrots opened with six goals to one, and still led at half and three quarter time, but by ever decreasing margins. The final term was tense with Morwell adding 2.3 to 1.5 to claim the points. Coach Danny Moncur and David Vogel were best for Morwell, with Jim Rasmussen contributing four goals, while for Leongatha best on ground honours went to Graham Salmon. Yallourn / Yallourn North kept its top position safe with a comfortable win over Bairnsdale. The Blues kept the Redlegs to just two goals to three quarter time to have the game in its keeping, Neil Meredith and Gary Young their best players. Moe had the bye.

40 YEARS AGO … 24TH JUNE, 1978

Traralgon managed to keep its unbeaten record intact, but it got the fright of its life when eighth placed Moe led by three goals at quarter time and by 19 points at half time. Obviously revved up, the Maroons kicked five goals to two in the third term to lead by a single point at the final change. In a thrilling final term Traralgon kicked 5.1 to 5.0 to win a high scoring, entertaining match by two points. Neil Mildenhall and Russell Northe were best for the Maroons with Allan Jennings kicking five goals, while Moe’s best were Grant Nicholas and Gary Jacobs with Dean Somerville their leading goalkicker with five. Second placed Morwell were similarly challenged by Warragul (7th), kicking four unanswered goals in the third term to turn the game in their favour, Kevin Smith (Morwell) and Ron Harper (Warragul) named as their sides’ respective best players. Leongatha enjoyed a comfortable victory over Churchill, led by Luke Alexander’s six goal haul. The game between Maffra and Bairnsdale produced 36 goals, although Maffra had control of the match from the second quarter onwards. Jamie Killeen and Peter Allman (5 goals) were best for Maffra, with brothers Bruce and David Cowell the best for the Redlegs. Sale was too strong for TTU, Jamie Freeman best afield while eleven players shared the 17 Magpie goals. Abdul Halabi and Frank Kelly were the best for the Two Blues.

The Eagles are a fearsome side, and even more so at their home ground where Drouin has won just once (2009) from their fifteen visits there. The Hawks will no doubt give a very good account of themselves, and could be much closer than many expect.

game could not have greater importance for the Redlegs. Having won in Round 9 against fellow finals contender Warragul, Bairnsdale could lay claim to being the “best thing outside the Five”, and they simply must keep winning matches such as todays if they are to replace one of the top bracket. Morwell would like to be the team which shapes the Five and will pounce at any opportunity.

If Warragul hopes to make a run at the finals this year this game, on their home turf at Western Park, is a must win game, a fact that the coaching staff will have impressed on the group at training this week. The Gulls have beaten the Power the last two years at home, and with a quite comfortable 42 point margin last year. Wonthaggi need to get a few wins on the board in this back half of the season to take some positives out of what must be, to this date, a disappointing year.

Tactics play a big part in these types of games and the Maroons pulled off a few when they met in Round 2 under lights. Conceding height in the ruck contests, Traralgon outplayed Leongatha at the stoppages by effectively running four ruck-rovers at the centre duels. No doubt there will be a few moves to watch out for from both sides this afternoon. The battle for the order of the top five is on in earnest and this game may well be looked back upon as one of the crucial ones.

CLUB NOTES LEONGATHA Last week saw us return to the start of the draw. We headed to Wonthaggi to take on the Power in our only Sunday game for the year. With the weather slightly better than Saturday but still bitterly cold there was a sense it would be a hard day at the office. Our U13s netballers got things underway in a positive way with a well-constructed victory over their counterparts. The 15s also returned to the winners list, a really pleasing result after a string of losses. The U17 girls scrapped hard all day in a game that both sides had good patches in. Unfortunately Wonthaggi just got away with the win in the end.

The senior girls were again up against it with Wonthaggi taking the chocolates in all three grades. The girls are working very hard and with lots of the junior girls helping out where needed they are all doing the very best they can. Over at the footy the 16s were taking on one of the form teams of the comp. Wonthaggi had the better of our boys in Rd1 and the lads were keen to turn the tables. Again a kick after the siren got our lads the win with Ethan Lamers putting one through the big sticks to steal a come from behind victory. If we thought that was too close for comfort then we had more in store in the U18 game. With the wind playing havoc during this game, scoring was at a real premium. As the game came to its close the last 12 minutes were spent with scores level and that's how it finished. The Reserves played probably their best game for the year. Combining well across all lines they were dominant all day. A number of players showed they are ready for a call up to the seniors if injury of poor form gives them an opportunity. In the senior match the Parrots followed up last weeks big win with another very solid performance. The Power boys always make life hard for our lads and it was a high tackling heavy contest game from the outset. Late in the first term we started to settle and got some goals on the board. The second term saw much of the same with a match winning margin opening up. The game

became a real arm wrestle after half time with little scoring. The Power scored the last couple of goals to close the deficit somewhat but the Parrots were always in control.

Auction players this week were C grade Ella Lyons. B grade Sara Riseley. A grade Nicola Marriott. Reserves Rhett Kelly. Seniors Jack Ginnane. Social News

The after match this week will include meals with everyone’s favourite, Butchy’s Famous Steaks. Get in early to avoid disappointment.

Also there will be a celebration of the World Cup with a reverse shuffle included. Plenty of prizes on offer and the club foosball champion will be crowned. Save the date!!!

July 21st will be the annual goods and services auction. With over 120 items up for grabs it’s always a great night. Tickets are $60 per head with meal and drinks included. If you are interested in a ticket or even a table contact Christine or Cam Kindellan Go Parrots!

FOOTBALL CLUB

Last week we welcomed the Bairnsdale FNC to the home of the mighty Maroons and we were treated to some very good football and netball games. The club also hosted our 4th Ladies Day at the Footy and it was extremely well attended and a success for all involved. Thanks to Leah, Jo and Kaz and all the crew that hopped in and helped on the day. A huge

THE MAROONS

thanks to the sponsors for their gifts and ladies that set up stalls during the afternoon. On the footy side, our under 16’s put up a great showing against a very good Bairnsdale side. The boys never gave in all day and in the end only went down by 19 points. Best players were J. Rodda, L. D''Angelo, K. Ruyters, H. Middleton, D. Duncan, T. Hamilton. The under were next up and both sides were playing very good footy in the first half with only 5 points separating the sides at the long break. It was a very different story in the second half though as our young maroons kicked 8 goals 7 behinds to Bairnsdale’s 1 behind securing a very comfortable win. Best players were K. Marsh, W. Broadbent, C. Ruyters, E. Williams, F. Shields, T. Webster With no reserves the seniors were next up and what was expected to be a tight contest

26

never lived up to expectation with our boys getting a percentage boosting 79-point win. In a pleasing display of pressure footy our boys never let the redlegs have an easy kick and it was a fantastic team effort. Hard to pick best players in a display like this but young Connor Little was a standout along with J. Jackway, K. Wilson, C. Ambler, J. Vucenovic, M. Jacobsen Huge congratulations to Rohan Hildebrand who played his 100th senior game last week. At time of writing we didn’t have any netball write up so stay tuned for a comprehensive report next game. This week we are at Leongatha in what will no doubt be a terrific contest. Good luck to all involved this weekend. Go Maroons.

CLUB NOTES WARRAGUL Last week we headed off to Tigerland to see if we could bounce back after a couple of less than impressive weeks. Our under 16s were the first to brave the icy conditions and came up against a pretty good Morwell side. They fought hard but were no match for the young Tiggers. However, we did have some really good contributors on the day in Charlie Stern who took out the Warraview award. Matt Boyles was also very impressive and is off to Sharkeys to get a good trim. Harry Pyle will enjoy his Maloneys Pizza while Will Hatfield is off to Voyage Fitness. Brody Tutton took out the Maccas award and the coaches favourite this week was Brayden Notman. Under 18s. Despite a good solid win our under 18s relinquished their spot in the top five. A strong first half that resulted in 7 goals to nil set the tone of the game. The strong wind going straight across the ground made it difficult for both sides but also paved the way for some amazing goals that defied gravity at times. Our better performers were Cooper Robbins who is fine touch, Will Gown is another who always shows up with Liam Gilliam , Daniel Coates and Bailey Quaife rounding out the awards. The reserves . The Gulls had a good win in the end but inaccuracy could have been their undoing even in the trying conditions. However, they held sway at each change and it was the last quarter that sealed the game with a 4 goal return. Rowan and Hayden Lawson – Pepper took out the two top awards from the Railway Hotel and Intersports. Jake Orlicki received the Sharkeys Haircut while Mick Lynn and Angus Emery used their senior experience to get amongst the awards as well. Seniors. The senior side got back on the winners list in fine style after four losses and gave themselves some chance of finals action if they can replicate that type of form from now on. The Tigers have been very competitive and are always up to the task, especially at home. We had four changes from the previous week and the inclusion of Tyssen Morrow, Matt Ross and Mick Coombes gave us some added bite. Sam Fennell was also promoted from the thirds and was in the thick of the action early. It was a

nice debut and richly rewarded. He didn’t disappoint and is certainly up to it. It was a pleasing win and hopefully sets the pattern for the remaining rounds. Our better players were Tyssen Morrow courtesy of the Downtowner in a brilliant return. Sam Russell deserved the Intersports award for his solid work down back with the hard working Nate Paredes taking out the Railway Hotel award. James Davidson ( Maloneys Pizza ) and Ash Di Ciero ( Voyage Fitness ) were super in defence and repelled many attacks from the Tigers. Netball. Morwell are very strong in their netball ranks so it was very pleasing to see our girls work so hard in blustery conditions and put on a good display. The A grade and C grade only missed by 4 while the B grade drew their game. Nice win to our under 15s with Laura Miller best on court. Social. The mid season ball was another raging success and a great night was had by all. Sportsmans Night on the 30th June. This week: It’s a warm welcome to the Wonthaggi Power this week. Good luck to all and GO GULLS.

CLUB NOTES WONTHAGGI On a very wet Sunday morning, we played host to Leongatha FNC. After two days of rain ( 42 mm) The ground was very wet. Then more before the start of the U 16’s, this made it a hard job to find volunteers to help run the boundaries and water. U 16’s. Played in terrible conditions, our boys battled through the water, and slippery conditions. The end result wasn’t what we wanted. The outburst at the end of the game was not acceptable. We are better than this. U18.s We knew we would be up against a strong team today. The ground conditions made it a very even game. We kicked the only score in the last to salvage a draw. Most of the lads were exhausted afterwards. Well done. 2pts is better than 0. Reserves, Once again due to the cold and wet conditions, we found it very difficult to field a team, With too many unavailability’s and several late call ups to the seniors. Thank you to several veterans and U 18’s, for helping at the last moment. We had a good hit out, and made the ground nice and muddy for the senior game. Seniors, With 2 late withdrawals to add to the very long list of senior injuries. We expected the opposition to beat us easily. The game was a scrappy affair, But we held our heads up above the water, and played the game out well. U15’s The girls played a great game against a very strong Leongatha side. Battling the weather, we pulled together as a team and

With so many position changes, everyone adapted well. Not our best game, but we came away with the win. Best were, Ava Scapin and Bella Anderson. C Grade. What a great win by all players. Nice to see that we were back on track and playing good solid netball. Awards beaned-Zoe, Voyage-Maddie. B Grade, Two win in a row. Girls we knew we weren’t far off the mark. Well done, now let’s make it three in a row. Awards – Cassidy and Emma. A Grade, What a fantastic team effort from all 8 girls ! Girls shot with great accuracy and made it very hard for their opponents. To Leongatha’s credit they came back, with nothing to lose. But we settled in the last 5min. to come home with a win. CLUB NOTES MORWELL Last week at home it was cold and windy conditions for all concerned. NETBALL - Our netballers adapted better than the boys and the girls had 4 wins and a drama filled draw in ‘B’ Grade. Both teams came into the game on 6 wins and less than one percentage point difference on the ladder and the game lived up to those statistics. ‘A’ Grade consolidated topspot on the ladder and the depth of talent in the netball squads bodes well for our future. Best in all grades were: ‘A’ Rachel Allison & Chloe Radford. B Grade Shelby Wulffers & Nadine Sloan, C Grade Libby Hodgson & Amanda Millett, U17’s Isla McCrae, Chloe Radford & Rahni Steven U15’s Emma Spagnolo, Ashlyn Pavey & Michaela Beveridge U13’s Maddison Beveridge, Emma Darling & Olivia Fourlze. FOOTBALL - In the football department last week, Brett Sherriff’s U16’s proved too strong for Warragul and the 16’s are a big chance to see finals action in 2018. Thank you to the four Churchill boys who helped make-up numbers in our U18’s. The Seconds were in the contest for much of the game but the Gulls prevailed. Good to see ‘The Beast’ Daniel Hutchison back on the park. Our Seniors went with the Gulls for 3 Qtrs but Warragul got away in the last term. See page 3 for all footy results. Congratulations to Reece Lewis on his first senior game. Best last week were Seniors: Dan Musil & Joel Soutar, 2nds: Jordan Wilson & Luke Dalpra, 3rds: Callum Hutchison, Rory Peter & Joel Mason 4ths: Nixon Hall, Nathan Noblett & Damian Hough. VOLUNTEERS – this week we acknowledge

Many thanks Paul and Kerry who also chips-in at the canteen, Thursday meals and where ever she can assist. SOCIAL – Tonight is our great Winter Wonderland mid-season ball at MFNC Social Rooms, so please come along and enjoy a great night of fun. Also pencil in July 5th for Thursday Night dinner at QBAH and July 28th dinner at Morwell Bowling Club. SPONSORS - MFNC wish to acknowledge some key sponsors, Team Staffing for your venue management, Stockdale & Leggo for your Real Estate & Morwell Authorised Newsagency and Intersport MidValley for your sports gear. CLUB NOTES MOE After apocalyptic weather on Friday night, many would have been fearing a repeat of that infamous day at Drouin in 2016. Fortunately, the skies cleared and the clouds did not disperse much rain, as Moe footballers and netballers fought out matches in their respective grades. Football Seniors Solid efforts across the board saw Moe secure a percentage boosting win. The game was played on the Lions terms with players happy to rest easy in the final quarter as the game was well and truly over. Without stating the obvious, any team would take a ninety point win at Drouin every day of the week. Best players were Tommy Long, James De Virgillio, Dylan Farrel, Tom Fleming, Billy Stanlake and Josh Pearce. Well done to Josh Galea who played his first game for the year in the Seniors after some strong performances in the under eighteens. The Seniors now have a big month ahead to set themselves up for the run to the finals. Reserves Like rocking up to work hungover, the Reserves did what they had to do and went home. The game never reached any great heights and was more or less a grinding victory rather than a spectacular one. Best players on the day were Aaron Wilson, Billy-Jack Smith, Luke Mackay, Mitch Mutke, Juzzi Morrow and Tyler Morrow. Preparations were a tad rushed to try and find officials for the day, so our thanks go out to Kevin Fleming for umpiring, Tawsy for helping in the coaches box, Richie for running and Ivan for goal umpiring. Under 16’s Displayed a good brand of team orientated football with all players contributing to the win. It seems that Skins’ messages are finally getting through and the players are responding with a rise in their physicality and aggression. In their encounter with Drouin it was hard to pick six best players but those adjudged as the sides standouts were Matt Devon, Lachlan Rock, Bailey Brown, Jess McGrath, Riley Moore and Rowan Demczuk. Netball A Grade Had a fantastic win over the reigning grand finalists, in what was a huge confidence lifter. The side deserves full credit for their sheerly resolve in the face of much adversity, to now find themselves 7-3 after playing with virtually half a side for the first six weeks of the season is a mighty fine effort. Best players for Moe were Sammy Waters, Bella

MAJOR RAFFLE First prize $38K Audi! SEE A SENIOR FOOTBALL OR NETBALLER FOR A TICKET $50 a ticket, drawn after the last home game. 5 prizes up for grabs. Hodgson and Georgia Moody. B Grade Like most sides on the day, were happy to get a win and move on. Moe won 41 to 37 with nothing out of the ordinary really occurring apart from Krissy Travers being able to add another victory to her resume. Best players were Ash Travers and Millie Agius. C Grade Faced off against a side that was equal to them on the ladder, but were unfortunately unable to come home with the spoils, going down 36 to 42. Best players were Beckea Jones and Bree Phoenix. Under 17’s Had to settle for a draw, after neither side could be separated at the final whistle with the scores deadlocked at 37 apiece. Momentum seesawed throughout the contest and both teams will be ruing missed opportunities. Best players were Molly Murphy and Elly Brown. Under 15’s Coach Shannon Freeman lamented a disastrous third quarter after her sides 34 to 41 loss, with the word disaster a euphemism for a less complimentary one. Best were Lily Campbell and Meg Morris. Under 13’s Had a strong 28 to 9 win, with all players showing marked improvement in their ball movement and running patterns. After a few tense weeks the side was able to secure a well-deserved victory. Best players were Molly Young and Ashley Paul.

Our netball girls had a great day out in Maffra last weekend with 4 wins from six games including a hard-fought tousle in A grade where our girls came away with the victory with a one-point margin. Our junior girls were impressive with their ability to stand up to the physical conditions of the match with the whole team lifting their intensity in support of their team mates. The under 17 girls also had a close game with a well-deserved 2-point win showing they are coming into great form in the second half of the season.

CLUB NOTES MAFFRA We lost another contributor to our club in Helen Cook - a mother who gave more than just a child to the club - in the week that our two towns joined together in support of the Footprints Foundation. Helen had her battle with cancer but Footprints would have been there caring all along. Luck was the only thing missing in the seniors, as our effort was as honest as you'd want. James Huts got out of his sickbed to nullify Sale's forwards, Jack Johnstone got the towel with robust effort, hardnut midfielders Lachy Channing, Ed Carr and Danny Butcher had the experience to produce in adversity. Kieran Jones persevered in the 100th minute, Jim Reeves and Luke Shelton were not outclassed, but Sean Day did another hammy.

Pam's ressies were at their limit with the seniors savaging the next best, but they impressed. Sam Bedggood dictated play, Bill Pleming controlled the air, Ryan Thatcher ran at - and around - defenders and Mitch Allman showed the accuracy our senior team begged for. The U18s are having a tough time of it, but the cream is there for the future - Josh Edey an outstanding prospect, Joe Ziino has rough edges that success will cure, Brent McKenzie worked on his strength and Shane Atkinson's low centre of gravity and fierce desire make a positive case. Again, U16 lads Mac Huts, Tom Thatcher and Lachy Allman loved another game for the day. They were special in Trent's U16 turn around of their season. Harry Gravener's turn of speed promises future excitement - not Robinson Caruso, we have a Spencer Fox - and other local U14's eager to engage in the contest. A goal was all it took in the A grade – we lost 39-40. Gutted. Missing Paige Biddle, Sarah Luke and Meg Gordyn to injury, and Emma Allman (to VNL), the

girls still gave it their all – our defence was particularly impressive. Former Eagle Brodie Brunt came back to fill the gaps, and managed to snatch up both the Footprints best-on-court trophy and the Pam Birss Memorial Medal for her efforts. B grade was an emotional affair – they managed to snatch the win by two goals. Hugs all round after the game, especially sweet because of the first round loss. Bec Stobie and Mikki Callahan were a force to be reckoned with – and tend to be, most weeks. C continued their top-of-the-ladder form, nearly doubling their opponent’s score. Myah Proud had a lot of the ball, and Jemma O’Brien shot diligently, dutifully and beautifully. In the juniors, the under 17s were close, losing by a devastating two goals. The under 15s had a rough trot, losing 48-25, and the under 13s had it even rougher – 51-14. They’ll be stronger netballers for it. Tonight, the Maffra Footy Show will be filmed from 7.30pm, exclusively in the club rooms – it promises to be a riot, hosted by Fish, Bill Pleming and Sam Robbins . Entry is $10, at the door.

We hosted Moe last week starting the second half of the season. The weather was very cold and a little damp. We are hoping for a better second part of the season than the first half. Moe are hoping to play finals and were keen to get some wins on the board. Overall it was a disappointing result. In the seniors Moe took a 5 goal lead in at quarter time having the benefit of a strong wind. By half time this lead was 9 goals and was even bigger at three quarter time. Coach Jordan Kingi implored the players for a greater commitment and they won the last quarter well and laying many more tackles. We need to sustain our commitment for much more than one quarter. Best players were: David Olsen (Barry Plant Award), Jeb McLeod (Middels ) , Eddie Morris (Family Hotel ), Jake Simpson (Kim’s Kitchen ) and Bob McCallum (Steam and Riddles). The Reserves game saw a strong win by Moe – our boys were very competitive but couldn’t put the score on the board. Because we struggled to score the result looked like we were soundly beaten – the final margin was 40 points, but the game was much closer. Hopefully another win is not far away. Best players were: Jayden Fairlie ( Select Office Award) , Simon Gardiner ( Middels), Jamie Ferguson (Drouin Gourmet Café) , Rhys Fairlie (Family Hotel), Brendan Clark ( Community Bank) and Tyson Buckingham (Jakks Pizza). Our young under 16 side had a tough game against the bigger young Lions combination. They kept trying against a high quality opposition. After half time Moe were able to extend their lead. Most of our boys fought out the contest better last week. We are hopeful that a win is not too far away – maybe this week against Maffra. Best players were: Xavier La Frantz (Select Office Award), Jack Fraser (Intersport) , Tom Evans (Intersport ) , Trent Kearney (Community Bank ), Harley Nicklen (Community Bank) and Kaiden Levingston ( Jakk’s Pizza). Our Club person of the week is Jim Sandman who is our hard working coach of our under 16’s. Jim puts in long hours at training and looking after his young players. He has shown his resilience as the team has struggled to win games and has always remained positive and is building the players skills. Jim is reliable and highly regarded for his work by all at the club. We really appreciate Jim’s contribution to our club. We are looking forward todays return game against Maffra who clearly are the League benchmark this year. GIPPSLAND POWER FEEL THE POWER advantage of the strong wind in the second term. With only minutes to go, the Cannons took advantage of some slack work at the centre bounce by the Power and reduced their lead to sixteen points by the long break. It was a far more productive term by the Power but, and it’s a vital but, they were still giving the Cannons opportunities on the rebound. Poor defensive skills by some Power forwards allowed Calder to attack too easily and put the defenders under un-necessary intense pressure.

Engie Gippsland Power went into their match against the Calder Cannons relatively confident despite having key players, Caleb Serong, Sam Flanders, Xavier Duursma, Matt McGannon and Kyle Reid missing due to State team commitments in South Australia. It was the second time that they found themselves in this scenario and had responded very well to the challenges involved individually and as a team against the Falcons in their most recent game.

However, this week it was a little more complicated as coach, Leigh Brown was also involved in the Victorian Country state team. His responsibilities were to be taken up by assistant coach, Rhett McLennan who still had the support of Scott McDougal, Peter Mongta and Alan Chandler. On a more positive note, outstanding youngster, Brock Smith was available after state duties and his Moe team mate Trent Baldi, joined his twin brother Riley for their first TAC Cup game together. Early in the match, neither side was able to get flowing football started due to some poor decision making and some very dodgy skills. The Power were applying their trade-mark intense pressure but were squandering scoring opportunities with a lack of poise and vision. The Cannons scored the first goal of the game after about twelve minutes and it took a direct attacking move by Nick Lowden to allow Josh Smith to finally kick a goal for the Power.

At the end of the quarter, neither coach would have been impressed with their sides’ performance as they could only manage one gaol each from twenty three forward fifty entries between them. The Cannons led by four points at the break because they had at least scored five points as well as their single goal. Rhett would have been eager to get the boys back to their “normal” way of converting scoring opportunities as they had the

54

If the first term was ordinary for the Power, their third term effort was even more “iffy.” But for some excellent work by the defence in the opening term minutes of the quarter, the Cannons would have been well in front. Another rebound “gift” by the Power gave them their first of the term but, instead of reacting positively, they gave the Cannons two more easy goals. In what was probably the Power’s worst quarter for the year, they didn’t score a goal. Yet again they were behind at the end of the quarter but this time the margin was five points. If Rhett and his fellow assistants were expecting a turnaround by the Power at the start of the last quarter, then they were very disappointed as the Cannons again kicked a goal far too easily. It took some more of Hodge’s hard work to set up Josh Smith for a clever snap and then Rylan Henkel went long and direct to find Noah Gown who marked strongly and goaled. The Cannons regained the initiative, again due to Power errors and it needed some more direct attacking play by Josh Smith to set up Hodge for a vital goal. It meant that the scores were level but Boadie Motton then gave the Power the lead with a long goal late in the term. Almost as if on cue, the Cannons attacked with seconds to go and were able to kick a goal to draw level at the final siren. It was one of those results that suited the game, as neither side had worked well enough to deserve a win but the draw seemed more appropriate. Final scores, engie Gippsland Power 11 goals 6 behinds 72 points drew with Calder Cannons 10 goals 12 behinds 72 points. Goal kickers, Josh Smith 3, Austin Hodge, Brock Smith and Harry Pepper 2, Noah Gown and Boadie Motton 1. Power sit second on the TAC Cup ladder with 6 wins and 2 draws from their 9 games.
