SALE V TRARALGON
PAST ROUND 12's By Paul Carter
5 YEARS AGO … 6TH JULY, 2013 Sale was thankful for its accuracy in front of goal when it took on Wonthaggi. The Magpies’ score of 11.3.69 to the Power’s 9.10.64 told the story. Kane Fraser (Sale), in his club record equalling 263rd game, and Lucas White (Wonthaggi) both kicked five goal for their respective sides, Wonthaggi storming home with four goals to one, coming up five points short. Anthony Rocca made his first, and only, appearance for Morwell as the Tigers thrashed Moe. Rocca kicked eight of Morwell’s 34 goals, including one booming torpedo from at least 70 metres. Rocca’s former Collingwood teammate Tarkyn Lockyer was named as Morwell’s best. Leongatha had a tight tussle with Maffra, the Parrots coming from a goal down at the final break to edge their way to victory. Rhett Kelly and Pat McGrath stood out for Leongatha, as did Sam Tudor and Ben Coleman for Maffra. James Gibbs was in superb form for Bairnsdale with nine goals as the Redlegs powered their way to a big win over Drouin. Traralgon had an important win over Warragul as it kept them in the Five, a game ahead of Bairnsdale. Traralgon was merciless in its defeat of second placed Morwell, taking its unbeaten run in 1988 to twelve wins. With quarters of 4, 4, 5 and 5 goals, the Maroons ran away with the game, winning by 87 points. Neil Mildenhall was best afield, and capped his performance with five goals. Maffra stormed home over Moe. Trailing by 25 points at three quarter time, the Eagles, with Darren Bennett and Gary Pleming leading the way, kicked six goals to one to take the premiership points. Bairnsdale’s first quarter effort of 5.8 to one behind was crucial in a game which produced eighteen goals and a winning margin of 29 points. Bruce Cowell was in brilliant form and was well supported by Chris Redenbach. Churchill scored its second win of the season with a comprehensive 55 point victory over TTU. The Kangaroos set up their win in the first half and then built upon it after the long break. Gary Welsh and the Dear brothers, Jim and Laurie, were prominent for the winners. A strong wind blew down the ground at Warragul. The Gulls defended grimly in the first term and kept Leongatha to 3.3, but then squandered the advantage with 1.7 in the second quarter. The teams slugged it out after half time, just twelve goals kicked between them. Trevor Riseley (Leongatha) and Gary Olsson (Warragul) were named as their sides’ best players.

40 YEARS AGO … 1ST JULY, 1978 The much anticipated clash of the top two sides in Yallourn/Yallourn North and Traralgon lived up to all expectations. Played in a finals-like atmosphere, YYN led for the first three quarters before Traralgon came home with a final quarter which realised 5.7 to one goal to win by 18 points. Daryl Bird and Alan Brady stood out for the Maroons, while for the Blues it was Rudi Bence and Neil Brennan. Terry Hunter and Wayne Grenenger were busy up forward for Traralgon with four goals each. Morwell put in a big second half against Moe to hold on to its spot in the top four. The Tigers, led by best afield Jim Rasmussen’s seven goals, took their four point half time lead out to a final winning margin of 34 points, kicking eight goals to three in the latter half. Bairnsdale looked as though they were going to score the upset of the round, going in at the half way mark against third placed Warragul with a 28 point lead. The Gulls rallied with five goals to two in the third term and another four goals to one in the last to get home with a nine point win. Sale and Maffra fought out a dour battle, Maffra ahead by a point at half time. Their score of 4.9 to Sale’s 5.2 showed that efficiency in front of goal was a problem for them. So it proved to be when, with four more scoring shots than the Magpies, Maffra lost by six points. John Brooks was Sale’s best with Ray Christie kicking five goals. Leongatha had the bye.

The seven victories have all been by comfortable margins of 31 points or better. With ten to twenty games of Senior football behind them now, some of Morwell’s youngsters will now feel more at home in the Senior ranks, and their performances during this season are showing definite signs of improvement. While Morwell’s overall home record against Leongatha is quite good, the Parrots have their sights set on a top three finish and this is one game they cannot afford to let slip.
in Round 13 and by Bairnsdale at Drouin in Round 18 seemed to be almost certain Drouin wins at the three quarter time break. When Bairnsdale last visited Drouin the Hawks led by 22 points before the Redlegs peppered the goals, kicking 5.10 to 1.2 with Bairnsdale getting home by ten points. Drouin suffered some final quarter fade-outs earlier this season, too, but more recently they seem to be finishing off their matches. A four quarter effort by Drouin today could effectively end Bairnsdale’s hopes of playing finals. Neither side will leave anything to chance, and the crowd will be well entertained.

The Wonthaggi ground has been a bit of a hoodoo ground for Maffra in recent years. The Power has beaten Maffra in five of their last seven meetings at their home ground. Maffra’s two wins at Wonthaggi since 2011 have been thrillers with the Eagles getting home by just 3 points (2015) and two points (2017), so don’t be surprised if the scores are mighty close again today, or even if the Power pull off an unexpected win.

A win by Sale, which would be their 100th against the Maroons, will go a long way towards cementing their double chance in the final series. Sale’s win under lights at Traralgon in Round 3 told the rest of the competition that the Magpies were the real deal in 2018, and they have continued to demonstrate that to date. Traralgon has had injuries to key personnel at regular intervals this year which may have been the cause of some inconsistency, but they are a team with depth in their ranks and they’ll give the Magpies a real workout this afternoon.

CLUB NOTES LEONGATHA Last week’s game at Parrot Park was played in very typical winter conditions. A bitterly cold wind along with rain patches on and off during the day. We were taking on Traralgon who are always a big test across all grades of netball and football. Many of our teams were feeling the effects of numbers not being available. Having said that, this is the time of year where opportunities can be grabbed by those coming into the teams.
The U13s netballers again showed they are improving on a weekly basis. Having been given a lesson by Traralgon in Rd1 the girls turned the tables this time and recorded a great win. The 15s appear to be back on track and were impressive. After a lean patch for 3 weeks or so they have now won their last 2 and definitely have their mojo back. The U17s went down by a small margin, showing plenty of fight they made Traralgon work for it right to the last. In the senior grades it was hard going. Traralgon are certainly one of the strongest clubs and gave our girls nothing. All of the games were quickly being played on the opposition’s terms. The girls fought hard but seemed a bit rattled from the get go and found it very difficult to gain any momentum. The big test for the girls now is to keep their heads up and keep working a week at a time. In tough conditions the 16s fought hard all day. Though they seemed to out of the game for long periods the scoreboard seemed manageable till late in the 3rd term. Unfortunately Traralgon proved too strong in the last and we went down comfortably. It was much the same in the thirds match. Both teams came out hard looking to gain the ascendency and it was the opposition that settled the quickest. With both sides having periods on top it would come down to who could stick at it longest. That proved to be Traralgon and they recorded the win. The Reserves ran out this week with a number of faces that had the spectators scratching their heads and asking “who is that.” With many lads filling in and helping the club out it made for a scrappy game. Traralgon slowly worked their way on top and the Parrots could not score a goal until late in the game to save some face. The senior game was much anticipated as Traralgon
26
had given us a real wake up call earlier in the year. With another handful of changes being made to the side some pundits thought it might have been a bridge to far. In the rooms pre match the coach would have none of it. Carb’s made it clear to the lads that “Parrot Footy” was achievable no matter the personnel. The boys came out with plenty of intent and had the upper hand quickly. They continued to work hard all day, at times they did struggle to connect from defence to attack, but in the end ran away for a convincing win. Auction players this week were C grade Rachel Cameron. B grade Ash Payne Riseley. A grade Jaclyn Smith Reserves Jack vander Kolk. Seniors Col Sanbrook. Social News

We headed east to Maffra last week and faced the ladder leaders in both the seniors and reserves. Maffra are always a good bench mark and we faced quality opposition in all games. In the seniors under 16 captain Jack Fraser played his first senior game – well done Jack. Maffra took an early lead and built on this lead throughout the game. Maffra were keen for a win after their shock defeat to Sale the previous week. Our boys fought out the contest but could not match the class and depth of the Eagles. Best players were: Brendan Dower (Barry Plant Award), James McDonald (Middels ) ,Jeb McLeod (Family Hotel ), Eddie Morris (Kim’s Kitchen ) and Bob Mc Callum (Steam and Riddles). The Reserves game saw a big win by ladder leader Maffra. A few injuries and poor discipline didn’t help our cause. We battled hard but couldn’t hurt Maffra enough on the scoreboard. Hopefully another win is not far away. Best players were: Rowan Drake ( Select Office Award) , Tyson Buckingham ( Middels), Shaun Straka (Drouin Gourmet Café) , Robbie Baker (Family Hotel), Jayden Fairlie ( Community Bank) and Simon Gardiner (Jakks Pizza). Our depleted under 16 side had a tough good contest against the bigger Eagles combination. We had 5 players out and struggled to win the centre clearances. Maffra were able to extend their lead in each quarter but all our boys fought out the contest. The boys deserve a win and hopefully it is not too far away. Best players were: Jordan Murphy (Select Office Award), Bailey Prior (Intersport) , Jahmain Harrison (Intersport ) , Che Dalton Ingham (Community Bank ), Angus Hale (Community Bank) and Kaleb Hermanson ( Jakk’s Pizza). Our Club person of the week is a wonderful young man, Ryan Taylor. Ryan is our hard working assistant coach of our under 16’s. He is a talented senior player and unfortunately broke his arm early in the season but has acted as a runner for several of our teams. Ryan shows great leadership and is a really good role model for young players. We thank him for the long hours he puts in and his care of our young players. Ryan always remained positive and helping to build the players skills. We really appreciate Ryan’s contribution to our club. We are looking forward today’s return game against Bairnsdale and welcome Drouin Junior Football club Maroon teams who will play at our ground as well today. CLUB NOTES BAIRNSDALE Back on the road again Redlegs! Off to the Hawks Nest for another round of opportunities!!! At Morwell last week the under 18 group led the way with a big win against an undermanned side, thanks to the Redleg boys who pulled on a Morwell jumper to help out. The under 16’s didn’t get the 4 points on the day but are improving, learning and developing every week into a formidable side. The seniors had a match to forget, injuries early in the game made it tough for the young men…. now is the time for leaders to really step up and lead the young outfit, the boys are being challenged. We all know they are better than what was seen last week, dust yourselves off and go again and again and again!!! Over at the netball courts we had mixed results with 13s and 15s winning their games, which leave their contention for the top 5 promising. 17s didn’t quite bring their A game however, Jemma McLaughlin is consistently putting on rewardable performances. C grade had an identical result being defeated by
potential. Well done to Tyla Alvin from 15s who was outstanding in the midcourt. A
graders were missing young shooter Isla
Pearson last week, seeing Annora Virgo slot
in well to compete against the ladder leaders. Well done for their efforts, despite being
defeated by 6 goals we are proud of their
impressive season so far. Abbey Sproule was best on court.
Thank you again to all of our Volunteers that make game day happen.

great work our club trainers do, week in week

CLUB NOTES MOE Seniors Won their home and away grand final with a gutsy two point win over a side that has proven to be a surprise packet in 2018. The match was a virtual arm wrestle for the most part, with the final quarter being played in near darkness as both sides scrambled to move the ball forward. Supporters were kept on the edge of their seats as Sale kicked two freakish last quarter goals to take the game to the wire but as the ball was nestled inside Moe’s attacking half deep into time on the siren sounded bringing the game to an end and the four points to the Lions. Best players were Clutch Stanlake, Goat Farrell, Coach Blaser, Lachlan Rees, Jai Massese and Moe’s own Benjamin Button Jibba Ainsworth. Congratulations to Ben Maslen who made his Senior debut, becoming a third generation Maslen to play Seniors for the club. Reserves Did as they pleased to win comfortably. Any supporters watching the match would have found it difficult to criticise any department as all players did what they had to do and to good effect. Best players were Luke Mackay who played on a ghost for the entire day, John Chessells who put in a number of repeat efforts, Tyler Morrow who used the ball well, Aaron Wilson who has been in good form, Josh Wilson who is a likeable lad and Chris McIntosh whose dad is known as Macca’s old man. Under 18’s Were struck with the unavailability bug, which happens at some stage throughout a club sport season. Despite the scoreboard blowing out neither side would have taken much away from the result as it wasn’t a true reflection of where the teams are at. Best players for Moe were Wade Anderson, Caleb Michie, Sam Hodge, Riley Wiggins, Jack Robinson and Leo Connolly. Under 16’s Are continuing to show steady progress under Skins’ tutelage, as the young Lions found enough winners to be victors by twenty points. The game was tight for the most part, with only eight goals kicked between the two sides, with the Lions able to string some good passages of play throughout. Best players were Matt Heywood, Jess McGrath, Lachlan Rock, Joe Skinner, Luke Summersgill, Jack Edebohls. Netball A Grade (From Peter Moody) Had a solid win in what was a very even performance across the court. The game was played in difficult conditions with both the wind and rain a factor, as the physicality of both sides was telling. Scores at the final whistle were Moe 60 to Sale 35. Best players were Georgia Moody and Shannon Freeman.
MAJOR RAFFLE First prize $38K Audi! SEE A SENIOR FOOTBALL OR NETBALLER FOR A TICKET $50 a ticket, drawn after the last home game. 5 prizes up for grabs. B Grade Had a win, doing enough in the finish to claim the four points. The B Grade competition is looking like a twohorse race, but all would be advised to remain focused and take it one week at a time. Best were Maleah Travers and Milly Murphy C Grade Went down in what is turning out to be a season of rued opportunities. Of the five games Moe have lost, three have been by a combined total of nine goals. Despite these shortcomings, the side can take confidence from the fact that on any given day they can take it up any side in the competition. Best players on the day were Beckea Jones’ mate Cheree Carney and Renee Blandford. Under 17 Won an important game that keeps them in the hunt. In seasons where you are scrambling to get a spot in the finals the pressure usually intensifies as each remaining home and away match becomes a virtual elimination final. Best players were Elly Brown and Milly Murphy. Under 15 Took it up to the ladder leaders but were unable to return home with the points. Rocket Eade’s belief was that ‘good sides don’t lose two in a row’, so all involved in the fifteens camp will be eager to turn things around. Best were Layla Blair and Chelsea Law. Under 13 Found the going tough against the top of the table side that boasts an incredible percentage and sits three games clear. The Lions battled hard all day but were ultimately no match for their superior opponents. The Lions best was Hayley Koot.

CLUB NOTES WARRAGUL It was a wet welcome to Wonthaggi last round in another game of massive importance to the Gulls as we strive to scramble into a finals berth. That paves the way for a ripping game this week against the Lions who toppled Sale in a thriller. Warragul were always in control and seemed to manage the slippery conditions far better than the Power. Defence was key for us with the back six thwarting any forward entries that the visitors could muster. Tom Muir is the Warragul Downtowner best player of that round and continues his super form. Matt Rennie took out the Intersports award in another great game with co defender James Davidson almost impossible to pass. Kim Drew and Nate Paredes are great springboards into attack and love the hard ball. Gulls by 50.
Reserves. It took a strongly worded but measured spray from Scratcha to get the reserves into game mode against Wonthaggi who were very competitive. Complacency will bring any side undone and now that the Gulls are in the five the question is, can they continue the journey. After the main break the Gulls got some momentum and wrestled back the lead giving them a 12 point win. Moe this week will be tough and will be a good barometer for the Warragul lads. The more experienced players in Tim Brady, Brad Nott and Doc Larkin paved the way to the comeback with good games from Tim Davine and Hayden LawsonPepper.
Under 18s. The thirds arrived back in the five in fine style after a solid win over an undermanned Power outfit. It was a strong performance with everyone playing their part. Liam Gilliam is the Warraview Joinery best player after helping himself top 6 goals in a top display. Mason McGarrity and Will Pyle are off to Voyage Fitness after their efforts with Braxton Ah Mat and Brad Quirk lining up at Sharkeys Uppercuts for a trim. Fraser Phillips will rest up at Maccas before taking on the Moe Lions this week in what will be a ripper. A special mention to WIL GOWN who suffered a serious injury that required surgery. He’s a great young man who has figured strongly in his games this season and the entire club wishes him well in his recovery. Also, thanks to the Wonthaggi trainers who assisted.

Under 16s. Wonthaggi are equal top after a win over the youngest of the Gulls. They are a good side with bigger bodies and more experience however our lads put a really good fight, only falling short by 25 points. Jake Kallady takes out the Warraview Joinery best player in what has been a great season for him so far. Matt Boyles will look super with his new look from Sharkeys Uppercuts while Cooper Algar is dining at Maloneys Pizza after his good game. Connor Ives gets the Voyage Fitness award while Charlie Stern is off to Maccas. Tom Heenen did well and deserved the coaches award. Netball. Our netballers had a good day on court despite the wet conditions with wins to A grade and C grade. B grade had a hard fought draw. The under 15s had a nice win and the other grades were very competitive as well. With the Sportsmans Night coming up after the Moe game we would like to thank Mark Ridgway and John Mulqueen for their efforts in bringing this event together. WARRAGUL TOYOTA are the event sponsor and we urge you all to support this great local business. This week we get to sample some more great footy and netball Gippsland style when we take the short trip to Moe. GO GULLS.

CLUB NOTES WONTHAGGI Last week we took the trip over the hills to play Warragul. Showers were expected in the afternoon, but started mid-morning. This made for some wet weather games. U 16’s. Played in showery conditions, our boys battled through the slippery conditions to record a difficult win. The opposition were happy to punch the ball threw the goals every time they could. This contributed to the 16 behinds recorded. U18.s Once again we knew we would be up against a strong team today. With still a number of late withdrawals on the day, this made it very hard for the rest of the team to withstand the opposition scoring. Those lads who play each week regardless of the weather, are our future. Those withdrawing due to it being cold. Disappoints this scribe. Reserves, Once again due to the cold and wet conditions, we found it hard to put a quality team on the park. Thank you to several of our U 18’s for helping at the last moment. The game was in the balance for 3 quarters, but Warragul came home a little better, and recorded a close win. Seniors, Disappointing day on the field today. Wet and slippery conditions as well as some disappointing decision making, made it a game to forget. The high light was the goal kicked by our first gamer, 15 yr. old Josh Shultz. Pity the home team decided to crash the moment of celebration. U13’s, We had a great win over Warragul in freezing conditions. The girls all played really well and awards were tough to give out. Awards, Tyrepower, Immy for here great game in a new position. WhisleStop- won by Laetitia. U15’s The girls played a strong game on the court, with every player putting in 100%. It
was fantastic to watch such great teamwork displayed by all of the girls. Awards went to Tori L. and Amy P. U17’s Today we saw Lara take the court for the first time in weeks after a nasty injury. Our defensive pressure was amazing all over. Our passages of play were brilliant to watch. Awards- Chloe C. and Ellie B. C Grade. Another solid game from all the girls this week with our third quarter being the one to seal the game. Well done on your win. Awards, Stephen S. B Grade, Awesome game again girls. Coming away with a draw after being down by 7 at half time, we clawed our way back. Our rotation seems to be working, keeping everyone fresh. Let’s welcome Maffra today and put 4 quarters together and show them we are the real contenders. Awards- B H Beauty, Jo. Wonthaggi Club, Courtney. A Grade, We came up against the much improved Warragul, the last time we played, the conditions were no different. With Chelsea out with VNI commitments, we struggle for height in the goals. We never gave up, and was pleasing to see us win the last quarter. Awards, Olivia and Annabelle. GO POWER You Bloody Bewdy

CLUB NOTES MAFFRA Trent's U16s showed their possible capacity
as a team while blooding yet more U14s in this
home game. Sam Berry dominated his area all
day - while notching six goals, he bought all of his team into the game as well. Youngster Jyle Dyce
impressed, the Ethan Bros - Kincaid Shingles and Albrecht made the most of the spaces created by our midfield supremacy.
Drouin's ressies looked capable, and Mitch Dignan was floored in the first contest, but that was as close as they got as our blokes ran free. Ryan Thatcher worked up and down field tirelessly,
kicking six goals. Darcy Gray is emerging as an athletic, reliable rebound defender, Jesse Ross gave his best impression of DMac and Mitch's

The senior game did not reach great heights as a

FOOTBALL CLUB
Last week we travelled over the hill to take on Leongatha on their home track.
Our seniors were coming off two pretty good games and looked to be in form, but Leongatha had other ideas and were far too good for us on the day handing us a 37-point loss.
In an important game our boys never really got going in a game that was not that great to watch with plenty of turnovers and players from both sides having difficulty keeping their feet in slippery conditions. Best for the Maroons on the day were Jackson Hall, Connor Little, Dylan Loprese and Mitch Mustoe.
The reserves were undermanned and borrowed four thirds boys to make up enough numbers to get a team on the park. In a terrific team effort, the lads got the job done by 32 points. Best players were Jake Sands, Rob Wilkie, Tom Northe, Bobby Marshall, Ewan Williams and Darcy Barnes. Many thanks to Louis Noble, Ewan Williams, Ben Cheetham and Kade Marsh from the thirds for filling in. We also send our skipper Stu Goddard a speedy recovery as he broke is lower leg in this game and was operated on earlier this week. Our thirds are building into the season nicely and there is some real talent in this side. They are playing a great brand of team footy and if they continue to improve they will be a good chance come September.
A tight first half saw the game open up in the second with our lads getting a very good 26-point win. Best players were Tom McMahon, Ewan Williams, Tom Webster, Kade Marsh, Flynn Shields and Max Luckie who returned to the team after a long injury layoff.

THE MAROONS are on the improve and starting to understand what is involved on playing at Gippsland League level. The coaches are doing a fantastic job with these young players and it is great to see them develop. With Leongatha above them on the ladder the boys knew they had a challenge ahead of them and they met that challenge and got the job done by 28 points. Best players were Luis D’Angelo, Jacob Cunico, Jayson Musgrove, Reagan McDonald, Matt Scholtes and Kade Ruyters who snagged 4 goals in ordinary conditions. Unfortunately, we haven’t received any netball results so watch this space next week.
Today we are at Sale and they are travelling very nicely with their senior side in the top 3. We look forward to some very close games in both footy and netball.
Don’t forget to get back to the social rooms after todays games and enjoy some snacks from one of our sponsors in KFC. Good luck to all involved this weekend. Go Maroons.
