ORANGE ROUND SATURDAY, 7 JULY 2018 Maffra v Leongatha SUNDAY, 8 JULY 2018 Bairnsdale v Moe SATURDAY, 14 JULY 2018 Traralgon v Wonthaggi Sale v Morwell SUNDAY, 15 JULY 2018 Warragul v Drouin

Authorised by Darren Chester MP, National Party of Australia – Victoria,126 Franklin Street, Traralgon, Vic 3844. Printed by Adcell Group, 203 Malop Street, Geelong, Vic 3220.

ORANGE ROUND 2018 The stories of five members of the Gippsland football and netball community are being highlighted as part of a new campaign to end men’s violence against women and children. Cayte Hoppner, Jaclyn Quinn, Peter Moody, Pip Timms and Jess Mills are each challenging traditional gender roles in sport in their own unique way and will be celebrated as ambassadors for this year’s Orange Round initiative.

Gippsland Women’s Health chief executive Fiona Owen said Orange Round was a great example of the prevention and response sectors working together.

Quinn holds the position of high performance manager at Traralgon Football Netball Club, while Moody is one of the region’s few male coaches of an A Grade netball team, having taken on the role at Moe Football Netball Club this season. Mills made history in last year when she became the first female field umpire to officiate a senior game in the TRFM Gippsland League. Hoppner and Timms are established leaders within the local football and netball community, with the former an AFL Gippsland Region Commissioner and the latter a past president and now vice-president of the Bairnsdale Football Netball Club.

Since its introduction in 2015, Orange Round has become an annual fixture on the Gippsland football and netball calendar. This year’s event will focus on the TRFM Gippsland League, with all 10 member clubs hosting an information session for players and members run by project partners Gippsland Centre Against Sexual Assault, Gippsland Women’s Health, GippSport, Quantum Support Services, Netball Victoria and AFL Gippsland. Round 13 of the competition will also be dedicated to the cause, with clubs using the colour orange to promote the event and the importance of gender equality in sport.

According to national not-for-profit organisation Our Watch, violence at the hands of a partner or former partner remains the greatest preventable risk factor for death or disability for women aged 15-44 years.

“We continue to build awareness and understanding of family violence throughout Gippsland communities to increase safety, accountability and choices.” Gippsland Centre Against Sexual Assault chief executive Fiona Boyle believes the sporting community can play a role in stopping this violence from occurring.

“We want to encourage sporting clubs to use the influence they have in the community to start a conversation and stop violence against women and children in Gippsland.”

“Orange Round highlights the importance of leading change not only in sport but in the broader community.”

Violence against women and children remains a major issue in Australia.

“Funding from the Gippsland Family Violence Alliance enables agencies to work in partnership and to discuss this issue with sporting groups in a safe and supported way,” Owen said.

“The idea behind this initiative is to encourage members of the community to make the link between gender inequality and men’s violence against women and start a local conversation about this important social issue,” Boyle said.

“My responsibility as a commissioner is to stand up for gender equality and the prevention of violence against women,” Hoppner said.

The concept is an adaptation of United Nations initiative Orange Day, which occurs on the 25th day of every month and aims to not only raise awareness, but drive meaningful change in societal attitudes and behaviours regarding violence against women and girls.

Family violence against women is also the single largest driver of homelessness for women, a common factor in child protection notifications, and results in a police callout on average once every two minutes across the country.

Orange Round takes place in the TRFM Gippsland League on 7, 8, 14 and 15 July. Wrist bands promoting the Orange Round message of ‘respect, dignity and equality’ will also be available at venues on game day and members of the community are invited to use social media to display their support for the initiative. TRARALGON V WONTHAGGI

PAST ROUND 13's By Paul Carter

5 YEARS AGO … 13TH JULY, 2013 Bairnsdale’s shock win over Morwell kept the intrigue over who would make up the Final Five very much alive. The Redlegs beat the second placed Tigers by twelve points, but shocking inaccuracy could quite easily have cost them the game. Leading 6.8 to 5.4 at half time, Bairnsdale kicked an atrocious 1 goal 12 behinds in the second half, but kept Morwell to 2.4. The thriller of the day was at Wonthaggi where Leongatha fought off a last quarter charge by the Power to hang on to win by six points. Jason Tomada (Leongatha) and Troy Harley (Wonthaggi) were the stand-outs for their respective teams. The other three games were whitewashes, Traralgon and Sale thrashing Moe and Warragul with almost identical scorelines. In those games Lee Stockdale (Traralgon) and Jacob Schuback (Sale) each kicked six goals to lead their teams’ scoring. Maffra set records in their game against Drouin. Darren Sheen equalled the club record of 17 goals for a game, while Maffra kicked a club record score and equalled the club’s biggest ever winning margin. Adrian Burgiel kicked his 600th goal for the Eagles and Sam Bristow played his 200th Senior game for Maffra.

10 YEARS AGO … 12TH JULY, 2008 The top five appeared to be settled with Moe’s big win over Maffra and Garfield’s loss to Sale. Moe had a handy half time lead over the Eagles, but put the issue beyond doubt with five goals to one in the third quarter. The eventual 65 point winning margin remains Moe’s biggest win over Maffra since 1999. Chris Hancock dominated the ruck, with coach Troy Makepeace and the busy Phil Town on top in the midfield. It took Sale until the final quarter to shake off a determined Garfield side. Jake Shingles and Jamie Sweeney led the way for the Magpies who edged away late for a 16

point win. Leongatha scored its second win of the season with a fifty point win over Traralgon. Caine Salmon and Brad Rayson were the best for the Parrots. Warragul maintained it’s top of the ladder position on the Sunday with a comfortable win over Drouin, although it wasn’t completely safe until the final term in which it kicked six goals. Clinton Rowe and John Reid were the best for the Gulls, with Bob McCallum controlling the stoppages for Drouin. Morwell had the bye.

20 YEARS AGO … 18TH JULY, 1998 Strong wins by Traralgon (1st) and Leongatha (2nd) over third placed Moe and fourth placed Wonthaggi reasserted their dominance of the GLFL competition. Traralgon’s 94 point win over Wonthaggi was led by evergreens Greg Morley and Russell Northe, a seven goal second quarter seeing them with a commanding 67 point half time lead. Leongatha won all four quarters against Moe, starting with a four goal quarter time lead. Tim Traill and coach Matt Mansfield kicked four goals each with Gary Webster solid as ever in defence. Warragul kept Bairnsdale to a single goal, scored in the first quarter, Glen Marshall and Ashley Green both kicking five goals. Morwell had many heart flutters against Maffra, the Tigers coming from four points down at the final change to win by nine points. Rick Galea (Morwell) and Glen Coridas (Maffra) were their side’s best players, Dale Burridge the leading goalkicker for the day with five for the Tigers. The win took Morwell back into the Five. Sale had the bye.

40 YEARS AGO … 8TH JULY, 1978

30 YEARS AGO … 16TH JULY, 1988 Traralgon’s unbeaten start to the season came to an end at Leongatha. The Parrots (5th) led by fifteen points at half time, then kicked six goals to one to lead by a commanding 47 points at three quarter time. Traralgon fought back in the final quarter, but the damage had been done. Chris Day dominated the midfield for Leongatha, Alan Riseley leading the defence, while Neil Mildenhall was a star for Traralgon. Maffra’s win over Morwell was an important first step in the Eagles eventually claiming second place on the ladder later in the year. The Eagles led from start to finish, Morwell winning the final term with five goals to reduce the deficit. Anthony Gravener and Peter Geddes made sure players such as Trevor Crothers (6 goals) were well supplied, Gary Pleming a stand-out in defence. Bairnsdale kept its faint finals hopes alive with a hard earned victory over Moe , seven goals in the second quarter setting them up for their narrow win. Sale and Warragul had big wins over Churchill and TTU, the Magpies bombarding the goals in the first term, kicking 9.9 to two behinds.

Yallourn/Yallourn North effectively ended Sale’s hopes of making a run at a finals spot. The Blues kicked six goals in both the second and third terms to lead by almost ten goals at the final break. Coach Ray Koeleman was inspirational, with Mike Lovison and Bernie Howard both scoring five goals. Sale now sat seventh, ten premiership points outside the top four. On the other hand, Moe boosted their finals chances with a huge win over Maffra. Opening with an eight goal first quarter, the Lions had the match won by half time. Peter Bacon kicked ten goals and Peter Boyce five, with David Heath, Bacon and Len Petch dominating their positions. Leongatha replaced Morwell in the Four with a morale-boosting 54 point win over third placed Warragul. Tim Maxwell was best afield, capping his day with four goals. Bairnsdale provided the biggest upset of the day when they beat Morwell by 33 points. The Redlegs had quarters of 4, 5 and 5 goals to set up a comfortable three quarter time lead, just the third win of the year for the Redlegs. Traralgon had the bye.

The Tigers haven’t won at Sale since 2010, their last three trips there resulting in losses by 33, 81 and 33 points. The number 33 features strongly as Sale won by that margin earlier this year when they met at Morwell. While Sale is flying towards the finals, Morwell has rebuilt remarkably quickly from its personnel losses from last year. They have brought some great young talent into the team and their faith is already being repaid. This will be a great game of football, Sale favoured to win, but the Tigers won’t be far behind.

Drouin was winless going in to the game, while Warragul sat fifth. The Hawks edged their way to a handy three quarter time lead, then fought off a spirited last quarter effort from the Gulls to get home by one point. This, the most narrow of all margins, is the closest game between them since they drew at Drouin in the old CGFL in 1926. Warragul’s win over Moe has them equal on points with Traralgon and they have their sights set on making a run at a finals spot, while Drouin is improving all the time. This will be another close match in front of a great Sunday crowd.

CLUB NOTES MAFFRA On a ground and in the conditions that are not our favourite we came home more enlightened with playing under a frigid sun, heat seaking crowds and post whipping winds. Unfortunately for our U18's they had to absorb the lessons on behalf of the men. Slippery footballs and smooth hands don't push the ball out of the current danger. Even if the boots are luminescent you can still sink the slipper into the slippery! Just carry the message for next time we venture south young fella. Our U16's could not meet their quota but a couple of them helped make up the 3rds complement and they had the most misery in driving rain at times. Captain Josh Edey grew with every contest, he is an impressive young man - backed up in the Ressies as well. U16's Sam Berry took a half to to get up to speed but showed a passion for taking on the big blokes, cousin Mac Huts - an outside runner- was amongst the thickest of the melee and Tom Thatcher rucked against the biggest of them. Brent McKenzie had the best wet weather strategy, Scott Shephard, Max Van der Zwart gave their best in implementing the team strategy. Cayden Jones big frame has taken a battering in his learning phase but he is now directing play at ruck contests. The Ressies showed they had learned from last years wet finals, clearing danger with just enough handball then a penetrating or concise kick and Pace. Mitch Dignan made inroads in his quest for senior selection, his maturing attitude and robust body put him in the frame. Nick Wozniak responded to Matt's shortfall in numbers by producing 4 goals of his own. Pace Brandon Rimington, Jesse Ross, Darcy Gray, Will Brunt - judgement Ben Batalha, Sam Robbins, Mitch Allman - courage Cameron Johnson, Patrick Walker - support Matt Davis, Pam McGrath, Chris Francis and Steve Saunders. The seniors classic performers sans Porter, Coleman, Walker and Gieschen were all there again this week but whenever they were needed Bill Pleming absorbed the blows in the ruck and played his role in defending space. Luke Shelton timed his interceptions with panache belying his youth, grunt machine Josh Davis rarely concedes

possession, Kade Renooy is getting more running room as a defender and Jim Reeves has proven his league U16 B&F portent right. The drought is over for our A graders – after a four-match losing streak, the girls got one under their belt in a nailbiter. Nat Allman and Taylah Ballinger in midcourt brought home the awards. We’re looking forward to the return of our VNL guns Emma Allman and Meg Gordyn for today. Missing a lot to injury, our B graders filled the gaps with some of the best under 17s we have on offer, but unfortunately just came up short by four goals. Renee Potts and Chloe Orchard were forces to be reckoned with, both making much-needed cameo appearances in A grade. C grade, as always, were dominant, showing the Power this season is a new one, notching the win by five goals. The Edey girls were the strength here – one up either end, Sarah intercepted and sent it back down to Rachel’s capable hands. Mixed results in the juniors - under 17s loss (that’s not to say they didn’t star in other grades), a win in the under 15s and a loss in the under 13s. Tonight, we have Mystery Flight Night at the club – there’s big shoes to fill after the success of the Maffra Footy Show, but if anyone can pull it off, it’s our netballers. CLUB NOTES LEONGATHA Wet, windy and freezing cold conditions was the order of the day last week at Morwell. “Only parents and siblings would come out on a day like today”, was one comment made in the grandstand. But it is a winter sport so things went ahead and plenty of good games resulted. The U13s kicked off proceedings with an impressive win, they now sit second on the ladder giving themselves a great chance of doing well come finals time. The U15s recorded a very strong result and this has them sitting 4th on the ladder. It makes today’s game a must win as it would consolidate their position for a finals appearance. The U17s had a good win continuing on their good form of late. Again the result of today’s match is vital as they play a side only 1 win ahead of them on the ladder.

The C grade girls were up and about, even in the tough conditions. They played their hearts out and were rewarded with a stirring victory. Well-done girls!! B grade had a tough game against one of the stronger teams in the comp. With new faces and positional changes things just didn't quite click for the girls. They worked hard but just found Morwell’s game to slick to handle. A grade took on the ladder leaders, and were far from disgraced. Again it was the lack of on court ‘connection’ that cost the Parrots dearly. With changing personnel it is very hard to build momentum in games. They made the Morwell girls work hard for their win and should be pleased with their efforts.

In very tough conditions the U16s played hard at it football all day. After establishing a small lead the Parrots were looking good for an upset win. Morwell regrouped and stepped up their game, making a sustained run on the scoreboard. In the end the boys did a great job to hang in for a 19 point loss. With players due to return we hope they can still make a tilt at the finals. The U18 game was a whitewash, Morwell are really struggling for numbers (as are our boys) and found it a bridge to far to contain the class of our lads. Even in the poor conditions the Parrots moved the ball with class and power. Again if the boys can get a few numbers back they will hopefully make a run at playing finals. The Reserves game was looking a bit like a world cup soccer match, minus the scoring! Both sides found it very difficult to move the ball with any sort of purpose and most of the game was played between the arcs.

26

In the end our lads did just enough to get across the line for an important win in the context of their year. Again the senior side had a handful of changes. With players missing though holidays, weddings, illness and injury the side was again asked to play team first ‘system’ football. The boys looked switched on from the get go and never looked challenged at any stage. In what was a very one-sided affair it is hard to remember Morwell posting a lower score against us. Today’s game should be a cracker. The top two sides going at it to gain maybe that little ‘edge’ heading towards finals.

Auction players this week were C grade Alicia Marshman. B grade Sara Riseley. A grade Nicola Marriott Reserves Jack vander Kolk. Seniors Tom Marriott.

CLUB NOTES MOE Round 12 vs Warragul Here we are already two-thirds of the way through the season. The winter elements were certainly out in full force last Saturday, as the Lions played host to Warragul. Across the board Moe were able to secure a number of wins as teams continue to build toward the business end. Checking the record, our Senior side were on the end of an 180 point annihilation on this round five years ago. Since then, our football program has produced two AFL draftees, a record number of Gippsland Power players, a host of junior premierships, and strong teams in both Senior and Reserves who both featured in finals action last year. More importantly, fifteen players who played in that infamous senior game five years ago are still playing at Moe, meaning that there are a lot of people committed and striving to see the club be successful. Seniors Was a game of ‘what ifs’ in the end. With Warragul’s season on the line, the Gul’s were able to break away in the final quarter to secure a two goal win. In trying conditions, the Lions battled hard in what a physical game but were unfortunately unable to find enough winners on the day. Despite the loss it is important to keep perspective: Warragul lost to Sale by a point, and beat Traralgon by 25, so they are a decent side capable of catching teams off guard. One thing about the Gippsland League is that it is such an unforgiving competition, so sides have to play close to their potential every single week to ensure they return home happy. Best players for Moe were Ben Morrow, James Blaser, Peter Ainsworth, Grady Cocksedge, Tommy Long and Joel Bragagnolo. Best wishes to Jai Massese who was taken to hospital early in the day after receiving a heavy knock. Reserves Much like the club cricketer who whacks kids out of the park and says ‘a tons a ton’, the Reserves scrapped home to claim victory by a point and were able to say ‘a wins a win’. Summing up the game proved difficult, as both sides probably copped the worst of the weather, in what was a good old fashion game of meterage. Nonetheless, the players can take confidence from the fact that they did not panic under pressure and were smart enough to drop numbers back behind the ball to kill the game when the opposition were coming. Best players were the Reverend, James Heslop, Anthony Gould, Luke Mackay, BillyJack Smith and Aaron Wilson. Under 18’s Did enough in the first quarter, during which the Lions kicked three goals, before the heavens opened up and turned the oval into a flat swimming pool. After half time the score did not change a great deal, as the Lions banked the four points and hit the showers. The highlight of the day was Trent Baldi’s ridiculous banana goal from forty out. Best players were Harry Pepper, Zac Skinner, Trent Baldi, Darcy Durham, Wade Anderson and Ben Maslen. Under 16’s Played out a scrappy affair for the most part, with the Lions - showcasing a number of shaved lids - able to find enough avenues to goal to produce another important win. Any players with intentions of going to Uni post high school were given an idea of how lectures work, with Skins’ quarter time speech seeing the great man just talk and talk and talk. Best players were Luke Summersgill, Jess McGrath, Rohan Demczuk, Ben Fleming, Matt Heywood and Riley Pearce.

MAJOR RAFFLE First prize $38K Audi! SEE A SENIOR FOOTBALL OR NETBALLER FOR A TICKET $50 a ticket, drawn after the last home game. 5 prizes up for grabs. Netball A Grade (From Peter Moody) Didn’t adapt to the conditions as well as their opposition. For the first three quarters the run and enthusiasm seen in previous weeks was missing, however, in the last quarter the weather cleared and the girls started running to have a great final quarter comeback but fell short by two goals after being down by eleven at three quarter time. Best players were Emily McInnes and Charlize Bird. B Grade Had a regulation win, 39 to 27, to continue on their merry way. The match never reached any great heights, with the B Grade match copping the worst of the weather as it started raining sideways. In the end all involved were happy to secure the four points and move on. Best players were Carly MullenBianconi and Maleah Travers. C Grade Got on the winners list with a 37 to 28 victory. Coach Renee Blandford played her cards close to her chest when speaking to the media post-game, saying that she hoped this was the start of a winning streak. Best on the day were Beckea Jones who can treat herself to a Macca’s coke after her effrots and Bree Phoenix. Under 17 Had a percentage boosting win. The Lions stamped their authority on the contest, without allowing their counterparts an inch throughout in what was certainly one way traffic. Best were Maddy Bond and Patty McInnes. Under 15 Had a pleasing win, with the margin creeping out as the match progressed. The Lions showcased their skills and moved the ball with great touch across the four quarters. Best were Nikita Blair and Destiny Mackrell. Under 13 Got their morning off to a great start with a win. The Lions came to play and were able to dictate terms throughout and up and down the thirds as they cruised to victory. Best were Ashley Paul and Hannah Davis.

CLUB NOTES TRARALGON

TRARALGON

FOOTBALL CLUB

Well round 12 saw us travel to Sale in cold conditions, one of our rare winter days this season. The under 16’s have shown massive improvement over the past couple of weeks and a game against Sale was certainly going to test them. For those who travelled early they got to see a fantastic game of footy which was tight from the get go. Our lads opened up a 12 point lead going into the last quarter but couldn’t quite get the job done losing by a point. Best players were M.Scholtes, K. Whateley, J.Healey, C. Frith and J. Cunico Next up were the thirds and this also proved to be a very tight contest with Sale leading by 10 points at the main break. Our young Maroons played some very good team footy in the second half in difficult conditions to eventually come away with a 3 point win. This keeps the boys clear on top of the ladder working into the pointy end of the season. Best players were C.Ruyters, T.Webster, B.Cheetham, T.O’Brien, P.Strong and Kade Marsh The reserves like the thirds have been in good form over the past 6 weeks and although only just had the bare 18 players, put together a great game and run out easy winners by 72 points. With a solid team effort all day the players that stood out were Darcy Barnes, Jake Sands, Michael Burge, Justin Barnes, Trent Hourigan and Daniel Loprese who kicked 4 goals. After a very disappointing result in round 11 against Leongatha, our senior side were keen to make amends and worked hard on the track during the week. Unfortunately, that didn’t carry through to the Saturday and Sale were convincing winners in the end. Our better players on the day were Haydn Hector, Connor Little who is having a terrific season so far, Wilson Gaudion, Adam Jeansch, Tim Northe and Mitch Mustoe. An old saying in footy is “the best umpires in the game are those that are not noticed” and a huge pat on the back to the three umpires in the senior game at Sale. They were terrific and consistent all game. Well done. We have two players sitting on 99 Senior games and if they get to play their 100th game this round we wish both Adrian Slottje and Nic Quenault all the very best. A terrific effort and both are very

CLUB NOTES WONTHAGGI On a bright and sunny mid-morning we hosted Maffra FNC, A nice sharp wind and some showers. What a great day for sport !! U16’s Most of our boys had the day off. The away team couldn’t get enough kids to travel. Even when we had 10-12 kids we would travel, and cop a belting on the scoreboard. A very disappointing start to the day. We hope you enjoyed your sleep in. U18’s With a top up from our under 16’s. The team played with a full complement of players. The game was played in some very strong rain at times, and both teams need a medal for staying out there. A nice win in the end, with very little scoring and lots of sliding. Reserves, With some changes made before the game, due to unavailability. We had a full team, with assistance from some of our U18’s. The away team were sitting on top of the ladder and played like it. We couldn’t match it with them, but the boys finished well and enjoyed a beer afterwards. Seniors, Once again we started slowly, with no score in the first quarter. We had a go after then, but the top team were on top all game. Not a major blow out like last time, but we were unable to match up with a well drilled unit. Well done Ben on those 5 goals. A Grade, So proud of my girls !! Just fell short by 3. We went into the game with an average age of 18 yrs of age. A great effort by all the girls. Awards—Mitchell & Co, Ellie, Wonthaggi Club – Alyce and Coffee Collective – Jo. B Grade, We certainly turned the weather on

for Maffra. The girls started off strong and kept building the lead, Maffra pushed hard to take the lead. But the girls stood firm. Well done girls. Awards Wonthaggi Club –Cassidy, Coffee Collective – Nikki. C Grade, We went well this week knowing Maffra were going to be a hard game. We kept attacking the ball which was great to see. Let’s all get to training and work hard. You will be a force come finals time. We will get them next time. U17’s In trying conditions we took to the court with a positive attitude and determination to win. A great team effort. Awards, Lily S and Chelsea B. U15’s The girls played a fantastic game against Maffra. The improvement displayed was outstanding and although coming away with a loss, there was a lot gained. It was great to see the determination and team work on the court. Awards, Macy and Nina. U13’s, Another freezing and wet day. With the home court advantage the players settled early and had to work hard to get the points. The team is settling well and playing some good netball. GO POWER, you Bloody bewdy

ELL FOOTBA W R LL MO

Our last Round was at home against Leongatha in cold and bleak conditions. The Gatha had some talented teams and only our ‘A’ & ‘B’ Grade netballers and our Fourths football side prevailed on the day. NETBALL – In cold and windy conditions the A & B Netball teams continued their impressive form and if you want

to see high-standard netball get along and watch them play. Best in all grades were: ‘A’ Courtney garth & Laura Fleming ‘B’ Grade Renee Stevens & Ellie Pollutro, C Grade Alyssa Holme & Annie Little, U17’s Isla McCrae, Charli Leslie & Jaida Delicato, U15’s Anna Solomon, Emily Fourlze & Emma Spagnolo, U13’s Bree Bonnici, Emma Darling & Daniella Utanga. FOOTBALL - In the football department Brett Sherriff’s U16’s proved too strong for Leongatha with a 19 point victory. Our U18’s were well beaten but continue to frontup with under-manned teams each week and Jock continues to do a great job as the coach and mentor. The Seconds was a tight contest but the Gatha prevailed in the final term. Good to see Luke Norder back on the park. Our Seniors were outclassed by a talented Gatha opposition but we continue to blood young players who keep improving. See page 3 for all footy results. Best last week were Seniors: Tyler Hillier &

CLUB NOTES WARRAGUL The trip to Moe took on even more importance than normal last week as we needed to notch up a win to stay in contention. The conditions probably suited the Gulls more than the home side as it was the Lions pace that brought us undone in the first encounter. The winter chill bit hard and the rain tumbled down but it was all worth it the end as the Gulls belted out the club song with great gusto after a gutsy win against the odds. Nate Paredes was the Downtowner best on ground in another super game. Matt Rennie was worthy of the Railway award after a great effort again and Kim Drew took out the Intersports award in a fine display. Brayden Fowler bagged four and is off to Frankies after his hard work and Sam Whibley will enjoy his Maloneys Pizza courtesy of a good 4 quarter effort in shouldering the ruck contests and his tireless around the ground work. Reserves. It was 3 versus 5 in the Reserves and despite the conditions a good close contest was on the cards. The Lions held the lead for the entire game but there was nothing in it. That’s the way it stayed with the Gulls going down by a solitary point in a ripping game. Will Cole worked hard along with Tim Davine and Brad Nott. Lucas Monacella and Scott Kelly rounded out the awards. Thirds. There was only a game seperating the Gulls and the Lions however the local lads adapted to the conditions far better and ran out 29 points the better. Mason McGarrity is the Warraview Joinery best player and he has been most consistent. Ned Tworkowski will enjoy his trip to Maccas and Braxton Ah Mat will benefit from the trip to Sharkeys for a decent trim. Marcus Pintaudi is off to Voyage Fitness and Bailey Quaife will visit McCafe. Fourths. The youngest of the Gulls kicked off proceedings and in a good quality game couldn’t quite match it with the 3rd placed Lions but had some good contributors as normal. Cooper Algar is doing very well and snagged 3 majors as well as the best player award. Connor Ives and Matt Boyles are regulars in the wards as well along with Charlie Stern. Jai Serong featured as well and Brody Tutton gets the coaches award.

Netball. Our A grade netballers are poised to go into the five after a great win over the more fancied Lioness’. They led by 11 at one stage and managed to hold on to win by 2 goals. Mackenzie Minichello was our best with Rene Cook and Jaime Rollinson having fine games. That was the only success on court last week but the girls are having a great time and improving all the time. Congratulation: Fraser Phillips was rewarded for his outstanding thirds form with promotion to the Seniors last round. He acquitted himself very well and will be a regular senior player in time. Well done to Nate Paredes who will run out in our colours for the 50th time next round. What a player and what a great person to have around our club. Congratulations Nate. Another milestone was achieved with Tom Kelly nothing up game number 50 recently as well. He has been very effective in the back half and has shone in attack in recent weeks. Social: Don’t forget Silver Circle day on the 22nd of July. Get your tickets to avoid missing out on a great day. After the bye we welcome cross town rivals Drouin to repay the pain of defeat from earlier on and march towards finals action. GO GULLS.

LL

We hosted Bairnsdale last round and had only two games for the day. We welcomed Drouin Junior FC Maroon teams on the day to showcase their skills when they played Ellinbank. We appreciated the support of the junior club to make the day successful. The weather was tough with heavy rain for most of the afternoon. Our Past Players Luncheon organised by Ben Proctor which was also a success. The game against Bairnsdale was tight all day in tough conditions as the ground chopped up with the heavy rain. The lead changed regularly and we were able to fight back in the last quarter to end up with a draw. Our boys fought out the match and will take this result against a good team like Bairnsdale. Best players were: David Olsen (Barry Plant Award), Bob Mc Callum (Middels ) , Jeb McLeod (Family Hotel ), Rhys Salter (Kim’s Kitchen ) and Clayton Kingi (Steam and Riddles). The Reserves had the day off. Many of them enjoyed the past players function and guest speaker Cameron Schwabb. They have a couple of weeks off with playing Bairnsdale and the bye.

Our under 16 side had a tough good contest against the ladder leading Redlegs. The conditions made it a real slog. We held Bairnsdale to 5 goals and can feel proud of their endeavour. We had a couple of players out and young star Tom Evans suffered an ankle injury late in the game. The boys deserve a win and hopefully it might be against Warragul today. Best players were: Josh Maric (Select Office Award), Jordan Murphy (Intersport) , Lachie Jagoe (Intersport ) , Trent Kearney (Community Bank ), Bailey Prior (Community Bank) and Andrew Hobday ( Jakk’s Pizza). Our Club person of the week is a hardworking and loyal man, Doug Lockwood. Doug is a life member and is our senior and reserves time keeper – he is reliable and always willing to help. Doug is a generous contributor to fundraising and sponsorship of the club. We thank him for the long hours he puts in and his love of the club. We really appreciate Doug’s contribution to our club. We are looking forward today’s return game against Bairnsdale and welcome Drouin Junior Football club Maroon teams who will play at our ground as well today.

SATURDAY 28 JULY - DFC & DROUN HAWKS NETBALL AUCTION NIGHT

Drouin Hawks Netball Match Reports Round 12 vs Bairnsdale 13s Bdale 28 def Drouin 12 In terrible weather conditions hawks struggled. Although they didn’t come away with a win there were still plenty of positives to take from the match and some fantastic passages of play. Award Winners Charlie Hendrikse, Lainey Downey & Morgan Cook. – McDonalds 15s Bdale 20 def Drouin 18 In wintery conditions, the Hawks girls struggled to find their mojo. Too many unforced errors in the slippery conditions, the girls just couldn’t get the break they needed. Award Winners Olivia Konstanty, Lucy McKellar & Ella Gown Jakks Pizza 17s Bdale 33 def Drouin 15 Bairnsdale were just too strong for the hawks. Once the girls shorted up their drives they were able to get the ball to circle edge and feed into goalers. Defensively Prue & Holly boxed out and rebounding extremely well. C Grade Drouin 44 def Bdale 19 A Great win by the hawks, in some cold, winter conditions. First half was brilliant but Hawks really took the foot of the pedal in the second half. They will need to put together a full 4 quarter effort if they want to be a contender come finals time. Emily Bethune was hawks best - Drouin Family Hotel B Grade Drouin 37 def Bdale 36 B Grade played in the worst conditions of the day, but played hard through them.
