CLUB MILESTONE

Article from Last weeks Warragul & Drouin Gazette "Milestone match from Round 13– 200 for Bob" Drouin ruckman Bob McCallum on Sunday will become the seventh Hawk to notch up 200 senior games with the club. The milestone game against neighbourhood rival Warragul at Western Park will be another acknowledgement of the 33-year oldís outstanding career. It also earns him well-deserved life membership of the club. McCallum is among the most decorated players in Drouinís history. His four best and fairests (2006, 2008, 2015 and 2017) are matched by only one other player, is only one of two Hawks to win a Trood Award and Rodda Medal as Gippsland Leagueís best and fairest (2015) and has been a regular inclusion in league ìteams of the yearî. McCallum captained Drouin in 2009 and 2010, played in two grand finals and coached the senior side for three years from 2015 to 2017 including to the finals in 2016. And he has made a big mark beyond the Drouin club. A strong advocate of representative football he has played nine years in interleague sides for the West Gippsland Latrobe/Gippsland leagues, captaining the team last year, and also represented Ellinbank and District league side during a two-year stint as an assistant coach at Buln Buln. Last Sunday McCallum was at Ballarat representing Vic Country for a third year, this time further recognised by being appointed one of the sideís vice-captains. After a decade coaching Vic Country from 2007 to 2016 former Hawthorn champion Peter Knights named McCallum in his ìbest ofî team for that period describing him as ìthe epitome of the modern day ruckmanî. High praise. McCallum is a strong advocate for players grasping any opportunity to play representative football.

2

ìI have enjoyed the experiences and think I have come back (to the home club) a better player each time after training and playing with the bestî. Fitness has also been an aspect to which he has given plenty of attention and commitment. ìI felt fitness was an area where I could beat an opponent with quicker movement around the ground and pushing forward,î McCallum said. He also believes the centre circle rule for ball-ups has boosted the longevity of ruckman by reducing the risk of injury and making ruck contests more tactical. As a youngster McCallumís ìfirst goî was basketball and didnít play football until a couple of school mates talked him into joining Drouinís Under 14.5 team. The following season he moved up to the Under 17 thirds in West Gippsland league, by-passing the fourths, and in 2004 he made his senior debut with the Hawks mainly as an interchange player giving the sideís number one ruckman an occasional rest. The ruck and resting in the forward line has been the story of McCallumís senior career virtually since day one and he is no different to any other player in saying he ìenjoys kicking a goalî. Married to Krystal, with daughters aged two and four and settled in Drouin, McCallumís football career looks to still have plenty of hit-outs and marks to contest. Other than a year with Frankston in the VFL, during which he was still able to play finals with Drouin, and two years gaining some coaching experience at Buln Buln he has been a loyal player through thick and thin at Drouin. There are plenty of clubs that come knocking each year keen to lure him to wear their colours. This year was the most, McCallum says, ì18 clubs ranging from a 10-minute drive from Drouin to an hour-and-a-half. Keith Anderson – Warragul & Drouin Gazette.

JUNE NOMINATION - Football Kieran Jones - Maffra Sale City Junior Football Club Taking on the number one ruck role of one of the top premiership contenders, Jones is a vital part of Maffra’s senior lineup. Jones has played 10 matches this season for the ladder leaders after playing 5 senior matches last year including the Finals series. This season he has put in impressive performances against some of the best teams in the League including a pair of third best performances against top 3 sides Sale and Leongatha. Originally from Sale City Junior Football club he transferred over to Maffra at Under 16s level in 2015 playing 16 games for the Maffra fourths in his first season. He made his senior debut in 2016 against Traralgon where he was named 4th best in the loss. In recent times Jones was TRFM Gippsland Leagues sole representative in the AFL Vic Country Under 19s side which played off against the best of Metro in one of the top elite country football matches.

MAY NOMINATION - Netball Chloe Radford - Morwell Morwell Junior Chloe is new to the A grade side this year and as a bottom age U17 playing up for her first year. Radford has played 12 games this season in Morwell’s A Grade side that currently sits top of the ladder. She has found her spot as Morwell’s starting Wing Attack and perhaps her best performance of the year was against Moe in round 6 where she was awarded votes in the Gippsland Cosmetic Laser Clinic MVP award. WONTHAGGI V BAIRNSDALE

PAST ROUND 14's By Paul Carter

5 YEARS AGO … 20TH JULY, 2013 Wintery conditions affected a few grounds, with scores at Wonthaggi and Morwell in particular being quite low. At Wonthaggi the home team kicked four straight goals to lead by eleven points at quarter time, however they were to add just six behinds after that in going down by four points to Warragul. The Gulls’ assistant coach Mark Collison was best afield, well supported by Clinton Rowe and Josh Helliwell, while big Chris Wylie was best for the Power. Just seven behinds were scored in the second quarter of the Morwell v Maffra match, a game in which the Tigers first and third quarters set up their 13 point win. Michael “Chunky” Duncan (Morwell) and Kel Porter of Maffra were best for their respective teams. Sale had their game against Moe won at quarter time with eleven goals to one on the board, just nine points short of their best ever first quarter score. The Magpies’ 157 point percentage booster was led by on-ballers Chris Laverty and Kane Martin, with Mitch Davis (8 goals) and Kane Fraser (6) the leading goalkickers. Bairnsdale missed a chance to draw level with fifth placed Wonthaggi when they went down to Traralgon. Jackson Hall was the best for the Maroons and capped his performance with five goals. Leongatha handled the muddy conditions at Drouin better in recording a 54 point win, Matt Willcocks on top at the stoppages and Cade Maskell converting well with five goals.

10 YEARS AGO … 19TH & 26TH JULY, 2008 Week One of the split round saw a thriller between arch rivals Traralgon and Morwell. The Tigers had an eight point lead at quarter time, however Traralgon edged their way to a two point lead at the long break, extended to six at the final change of ends. Tim Aitken was proving a troublesome proposition for the Morwell defenders, finishing with seven of Traralgon’s thirteen goals, with Matt Habel leading a tight defence. The final term went for more than 34 minutes, the final siren seeing Traralgon with its third win of the year with a four point winning margin. At Garfield the Stars’ more efficient use of their scoring opportunities gave them a 41 point win

18

over Leongatha with just more scoring shot than the Parrots. Ned Marsh and Luke Tynan were the best of an even Garfield team. Week Two saw comfortable wins to Sale and Maffra over Drouin and Warragul. David Ivey was named as Sale’s best player for his six goal haul, along with Phil Harris and Chris Laverty, while Daniel Barrand and Bob McCallum stood out for Drouin. Maffra’s defence was solid, keeping Warragul to just two goals to three quarter time, Nick Hider and Ben Coleman providing great drive out of the centre. Moe had the bye.

20 YEARS AGO … 25TH & 26TH JULY, 1998 Traralgon’s unbeaten 12 game run came to an end in sensational circumstances with Moe upsetting the Maroons by two points. Traralgon led from the start and were not headed until Lions’ forward Jordan Meikle was given a controversial free kick, which he converted, giving Moe the lead. The final siren sounded just moments after his kick had sailed through, supporters streaming onto the ground. Shane Jarvis and Meikle both kicked four goals for Moe, while Tony Lane was the leading goalkicker for Traralgon with five. The win ensured Moe the double chance in the upcoming finals. Wonthaggi was too strong for Morwell. Adam Mabilia and Glen Petherick were best for the Blues, while Anthony Waller kicked six of Morwell’s 14 goals. Maffra had a handy 13 point half time lead against Warragul, then put the pedal down with another 13 goals after the break to draw away to win by 46 points. Glen Coridas and Nigel Sellings were on top in the midfield for Maffra. Ashley Green starred up forward for the Gulls with seven goals. Sale was professional in its Sunday game against Bairnsdale with quarters of 5, 5, 5 and 4 goals, winning by 75 points. Andrew Gerrand kicked five goals for the Magpies, with Rodney Aurisch and Luke Collins named as Sale’s best players. Leongatha had the bye.

Yallourn / Yallourn North’s strong win over Leongatha knocked the Parrots out of the top Four, temporarily at least. Ron Lee was brilliant for the Blues, kicking a club record 10 goals, well supported by another great game from Neil Brennan. Moe kept their finals hopes alive with a 32 point win against Bairnsdale. The Lions trailed by 17 points at quarter time, but six goals in each of the second and fourth quarters carried them to their win. Although Warragul led at every break against Sale they were never comfortable. Alan Singline and Gavin Bransgrove won their positions well for the Gulls, Sale’s Paul Clavarino very busy on the ball. Conditions were muddy at Morwell where they and Traralgon each kicked four goals in the opening term, but could add a combined total of just seven goals in the final three quarters. David Vogel and Carl Vesty (Morwell) had a great battle with Charlie Healey and Robert Johnson (Traralgon), the Tigers getting home by 15 points. Maffra had the bye.

40 YEARS AGO … 14TH JULY, 1978

The top four looked to be settled after Round 14 matches were completed, Maffra (4th) now enjoying a two game break over fifth placed Bairnsdale with four rounds left to play. Traralgon went on a goalkicking spree against neighbour TTU, winning by almost 200 points. Allan Jennings (7 goals) was the leading scorer and best afield. David Cowell’s eight goals led Bairnsdale to a big win over Churchill, the win taking the Redlegs to fifth, replacing Leongatha. Sale made their break against Warragul in the third quarter where they kicked seven goals to take their narrow half time lead of one point out to a handy 25 at the final break. Jasmin Baryczka kicked six goals for Sale. Morwell was slow to start against Moe and took until the third quarter to gain the lead, a quarter in which they kicked five goals. They ran away with the game in the final term, adding a further six goals to their tally. Stephen Allison and ruckman Kevin Fleming were best for the Tigers. The match of the day was at Maffra where the Eagles were made to work hard for a one goal lead going in to the final quarter. Chris Peel stood out for Maffra and kicked three goals to cap his performance, while Trevor Riseley led a determined Leongatha defence.

The Redlegs’ margin of victory, 71 points, is the biggest by Bairnsdale over Wonthaggi since their first ever meeting in 1995 when they celebrated an 89 point win. Bairnsdale has only won at Wonthaggi twice, once in their inaugural year of 1995 and then by four points in 2014. Thoughts of appearing in this year’s finals series may now be gone, but there is still plenty to be gained from a victory this afternoon for both sides.

Maffra a fortnight ago. The reward for finishing top in a Final Five Finals system is having the first week of the finals off to rest and recuperate. Maffra has had the better of Morwell in recent years, now having a run of six successive wins over the Tigers, most recently winning by 76 points in Round 5 this year. Morwell is a team on the improve and they play their home ground particularly well and will make Maffra work hard for the premiership points.

The Parrots have won their last nine games this season, meaning that they have beaten all the other teams in the competition. They have won their last 16 games against Moe, the Lions’ last win over the Parrots being at Yallourn North in 2010. As far as wins at “Parrot Park” are concerned, Moe hasn’t won at Leongatha since 2009. Should Moe be able to overcome all these statistical hurdles and manage a win over Leongatha it will bode very well for their prospects when the finals come around. Leongatha has designs on finishing on top of the ladder and to achieve that each game is a must win for them and they’ll know that the Lions will make their task as difficult as possible.

Warragul beat Traralgon on their home track at Western Park for the first time since 2008 earlier this year, the winning margin of 25 points being their biggest win over the Maroons since they won by 33 points in 2008. Both teams have suffered injury to key personnel this year, Warragul particularly early in the season, while Traralgon have had to regularly replace key players. Nothing will be left to chance today as both teams realize the consequences of a loss.

Sale has maintained contact with the league leaders, Maffra and Leongatha, and will be sure to do its bit in winning games to firstly set in concrete their double chance in the finals by finishing in the top three. Maybe, just maybe, one or both of the eagles and Parrots may have a slip up or two and the Magpies could even bypass them. Any trip to Drouin means a hard fought, difficult game for the visitors, and Sale will be under no illusion that today’s game will be anything else. Fans can expect to see the Hawks fight tooth and nail with the Magpies with scores maybe closer than many think.

CLUB NOTES MOE Round 13 vs Bairnsdale A Sunday trip to Bairnsdale was on the agenda last weekend, with wild weather again the feature as our teams slugged it out in driving rain and freezing wind. The club was proudly supporting Orange Round last week as well, with all players and officials sporting orange wrist bands to raise awareness of eliminating violence against women. Football Seniors Had an important win in the context of their season, getting the job done on a ground that has traditionally not been a happy hunting ground for the Lions. The match was best described as one where Moe created a three to four goal buffer after a normalised tight start, which they were able to sustain until the final siren. With a number of players tried in new positions, it was pleasing to see all contribute to the victory, which was highlighted by a few of the teams lesser-known’s stepping up. Best players were Noodle Biffin, Tommy Long, Joel Bragagnolo, the apparent pieman Sam Cougle, the self-appointed mini-CEO Tom Fleming and Grady Cocksedge. Congratulations to Josh Wilson who made his Senior debut, and to Scott Van Dyk who copped the greatest falcon in sporting history. Under 18’s Secured the four points over a proven opposition in a performance that will surely give the side a huge confidence boost. After a ping-ponging start, Moe settled midway through the first quarter and were able to get the game on their terms. Apart from a few structural breakdowns, the Lions used the ball effectively and found honest contributions across the board. Zac Skinner provided the highlight with a clinical set shot from the pocket whilst Caleb Michie almost marked his own kick such was the ferocity of the wind. Best players were Josh Galea, Ben Maslen who kicked the ball seventy metres on one occasion, Luke Tumino, Zac Skinner, Wade Anderson and Trent Baldi. Under 16’s Were deserving victors, claiming their best win for the season. In what was a complete turnaround from the corresponding fixture last time around, Moe burst out of the blocks kicking four goals to one in the first term. From there, the young Lions went from strength to strength, and were able to keep their cool in a spiteful contest. Best players were Matt Devon, Brandon Watson, Tajh Eden, Jess McGrath, Luke Summersgill and the league of legends king Jordan McKay. Thanks to Paul Connolly who did the timekeeping for both the sixteens and eighteens. Netball A Grade (From Peter Moody) Had a gutsy win. The wind and rain didn’t make it easy; as

MAJOR RAFFLE First prize $38K Audi! SEE A SENIOR FOOTBALL OR NETBALLER FOR A TICKET $50 a ticket, drawn after the last home game. 5 prizes up for grabs. Bairnsdale threw everything they had at Moe and made the Lions work for every goal. In the end the side won 42 to 37. Best players were Bella Hodgson and Emily McInnes. B Grade Must feel good rocking up every week knowing you are probably going to win, as B Grade did yet again in their clash last Sunday. 30 wins from 32 starts since the start of last season says enough. C Grade Are starting to put together a number of wins to solidify their position in the top five. In their encounter with Bairnsdale, Moe did what was required and got the job done to good effect. Provided there is not a huge shake up to the ladder in the final five weeks, Beckea Jones will get to play in that long awaited final. Under 17’s Were able to secure a close fought 30 to 35 win. In a match that could have gone either way, Moe were able to be on the right side of the ledger, making the trip home from the east all the better. Under 15’s Escaped with a 19 to 21 win in what was a see-sawing battle throughout the four quarters. With a crucial four points on the line Moe were able to limit their mistakes in a tense final term as the final whistle brought about a collective sigh of relief from all in maroon and blue. The result was probably their best to date, as they inflicted Bairnsdale with just their second loss for the season. Under 13’s Went down in a close encounter 23 to 18, with the chill factor at its peak in the early hours both sides battled hard in trying conditions.

CLUB NOTES WONTHAGGI On a calm and crisp morning, we ventured back to the Valley to play Traralgon. U 16s, This was a game that could go either way. Traralgon at home is hard work, no matter what grade. The boys came out of the game with a very important win. The next few weeks will be pivotal in determining if we can go all the way. U18s, With some help from the U16s we were able to field a team to play the top team. Scoreboard didn’t show the endeavour by the lads, Well done and keep that fight up each week. Reserves, The home team had as many U18s in their team as we did. This was an entertaining game, close for the first half, then the home team got into gear. We played well. Thank you to the U18s, your always eager to play. Seniors, Our injury count took a new high mid-week with at least 11 seniors players unavailable. But the confidence amongst the group was high. The game was played on equal teams until half time. But we were outrun in the second half. We also welcomed Jake Barry from the U18s for his first senior game. A Grade, Well done to all 8 girls, what a great team effort ! 77-54. This was our highest score against the top of the ladder team. Fantastic effort, we are now in a strong position to take on Bairnsdale today. B Grade, Playing the top team today the girls

gave Traralgon a massive fright. We have come a long way since we met in round 4. We had a great start, and we were 1 up at half time. The 2nd half was very intense with both sides fighting for a turn over. Traralgon pushed through and took the lead. We have some exciting games ahead. Let’s work hard girls. U15s, The girls had a tough day facing a much improved Traralgon team. Hopefully they can take this disappointing loss and build on our team in the coming weeks to become a better team GO POWER, you bloody bewdy. C Grade, Unfortunately we couldn’t play strong 4 quarters today. However we did have many great passages of play. Let’s come out strong at home today. Awards to Sommer and Larni. U17s It was always going to be tough, with the 2 top sides giving their all. A great game of netball for all spectators to watch. So many positives in this game, well done girls. Best Chelsea and Bella.

CLUB NOTES MAFFRA Without parallel, former league President Terry Flynn deserves every accolade that a scribe could afford a volunteer. A man who moved to our town late last century, during a trying period he published a club newsletter full of humour- lifting our club spirit- making legends of our characters of the 20th century, an unselfish player who was just outside senior ranks, a respected senior level public servant in our irrigation industry, President of our tennis club and father of Zara - a member of our multi premiership U17 squad. There he was - spared his usual central umpire role - 'freezin cruising' the Ressies boundary in the thoroughly unpleasant conditions - in second place legendary good bloke, hiding in the wind shadow of the goal post, John Wals (Darren Randle and 16yo Brodie Newman holidaying here - likewise). In equal third would be our trainers/ water boys and our gatekeepers. Solid gold! On the field we had as dark a day as the sky and no amount of artificial light could help us bridge the 'lived experience' of our opponents. The soft wet surface has been our bogey ever since we joined the Latrobe Valley league. It may have been our bitterest day ever if Kel Porter's early exit is the end of his stellar career. That did not stop individual efforts -and the team heroics of our senior mob -in each of our teams putting in selfless performances that do us credit despite the scoreboard loss. Pam's Ressies were under the control of team leader Ben Batalha, he and fellow veteran Jeremy Jones sold a lot of candy to their opponents over the day, lack of pace is not a negative in these conditions, ask Sam Robbins. Unfortunately blooming talent Darcy Gray looks like he is going to have some recuperation time. Patrick Walker relishing his family again gathering together fighting for Maffra. Luke Shelton made light work of his demotion and Jesse Ross continues his selfless actions. The U16's had only 16 players - at home - one of whom, Ben Harrington, had the biggest crack with the smallest frame to grace the Red and Black, Ethan Albrecht and Sam Berry led a 2nd half resurgence. Max VanderZwart, Andy Veal and Linus Rodda won the 3rds awards. Bill Pleming deservedly won the Past Players Towel, he has earned his place alongside his brother, Danny Butcher, Jack Johnstone, James Huts, Ed Carr and Dan O'Brien led the stats inside and out. But there were no passengers. In the netball, a soggy triumph for our A graders although, in those conditions, an injury-less was a triumph in itself. Neck-and-neck for its majority, the

34

contest was won in the final quarter – we steadied, and didn’t let desperation seize the homestretch. The return of tall Meg Gordyn under the ring made a welcome dent in the scoreboard, as she worked with under 17s gun Leyla Berry in the final term to slot goals in nightmare conditions. Our reigning C grade best-and-fairest Renee Potts slotted seamlessly into the side in goal keeper, reeling in intercept after intercept, despite already playing a whole game. B grade was another win – hanging onto fifth on the ladder, but it’s a long road to finals. Another under 17 capably climbing her way through the ranks is Abbey Pleydell, whose accuracy in goals is breathtaking to watch. She was assisted in the midcourt by the tenacious Bec Stobie, whose impeccable timing put the girls on the right side of a 16 goal margin at the final whistle. It’s been said before, I’ll say it again – our C grade side is one of our true strengths in the club. The dedication shown by these women in itself has earnt their top spot on the ladder. The strong voices of Megan Raine and Anna Gaw, up opposite ends, control the play, and the pair demonstrate capable leadership week-in, week-out. Mixed results for our juniors - in the under 13s, Leongatha were a better team on the day, beating our girls 42-16.There was tighter contests in the older grades - our under 15s snagged a 37-33 victory, while the under 17s hung on to win 41-37. After a week off we head to Morwell better prepared for a cold, wet day - the rain was a thoroughly welcome event up here.

We played arch rivals Warragul last Sunday and again competed for Warragul – Drouin Gazette Cup across all football and netball games. Warragul won enough football and netball games to retain the Cup.

The senior game against Gulls was tight for most of the day with Warragul getting away in the last quarter. It was a good quality game that ebbed and flowed. We hit the goal post five times during the game and can look back on some lost oportunities. Warragul had a lead for most of the game with our Hawks trying to narrow the gap. Our boys fought out the match and will learn a lot from this contest. Congratulations to Bob Mc Callum who is an amazing player who played his 200th game last week. Best players were: James Mc Kellar (Barry Plant Award), Bob Mc Callum (Middels ) , Brendan Dower (Family Hotel ), Michael Laszcyk (Kim’s Kitchen ) and David Miller (Steam and Riddles). The Reserves were happy to be playing again after a couple of weeks off. The faced a strong Warragul team looking to secure a finals berth. Warragul scored more freely and won the game comfortably. Best players were: Liam Anderson ( Select Office ), Shaun Straka (Community Bank ) , Tyson Buckingham ( Middels Award ) , Kurtis Harper (Drouin Gourmet Café ) and Owen Walsh ( Family Hotel Award).

Our under 16 side had a really good contest against Warragul. The conditions were a little slippery and despite a good start from Warragul our young Hawks fought back to win their first game for the season. The last quarter saw the boys kick three late goals to win a tough game. Well done to the boys who sang the club song very loudly. We hope the boys can now build on this great win. Best players were: Josh Maric (Select Office Award), Jahmain Harrison (Intersport) , Trent Kearney (Intersport ) ,Xavier Lafrantz (Community Bank ), Jacob Sandman (Community Bank) and Kaiden Levingston ( Jakk’s Pizza).

Our Club person of the week is a hardworking and loyal club man, Rowan “ Rocky “ Fraser. Rocky has a long family involvement in the club and is our under 16 team manager. He is reliable and always willing to help. Rocky is proud of the progress his young son Jack is making especially when he gained senior selection recently. Jack is a leader like his dad and also helps in any way he can. We really appreciate Rocky and Jack’s contributions to our club. We are looking forward today’s return game against Sale.

CLUB NOTES

SALE FO

This week’s local hero is Luke Henderson from Workforce XS, big thanks from the Reserves for your generosity. Congratulations to Jarrod Freeman this week in Drouin playing your 50th senior game.

What a day at The Nest for our footballers. With all teams having great wins on the day, we also had some great individual efforts from Jack McLaren and Jonty McGuinness in the 3rds, and Jack Riethchel in the Reserves all kicking bags of goals. The big news at the end of the day was the unbelievable individual effort by Jack ‘Truckin Showtime’ Lipman in the ruck for Sale. With a world record breaking stat of 107 hitouts for the day. Sale controlled the game thanks to the big fella from the start and kept Morwell under wraps for most of the day. With the twin towers John ‘Big Country’ Gooch and Brad ‘Deadeye’ Dessent proving a force up forward with 4 and 3 goals respectively. Sale 16.17-113 to Morwell 5.4-34. Best- J.Lipman, J.Allison, J.Gooch, J.Mapleson and M.Dowse.

Reserves were led by Jack Rietschel who kicked 9 goals, the most from a twos plyer since Laurie Stephenson in the 1950s. Scores Sale 22.11-143 to Morwell 1.2-8. Best- B.Jones, J,Rietschel, D.Lewin and J.Dyt. The Thirds were out for a big one. With Jack McLaren kicking 15 and Jonty McGuiness slotting 10 to keep the scoreboard ticking over with Sale winning 39.17-251 to 0.2-2. BestJ.Mclaren, J.Allman, J.McGuiness and E.Dyer. Coach Kane Fraser has the fourths boys flying at the moment and notched another win. Keep up the solid work boys. Sale 7.8-50 to 2.9-21. Best- B.Safstrom, H.Ronchi, W.Mckinnon and M.Hawkins. Round 13 is done and dusted and I must say we were very grateful for the split round as last weekend was perfect footy weather compared to the week before. Wonthaggi travelled to our home ground and started the day in fine form winning the under 16’s by 27 points. Our lads gave up a big start but fought the game out to the very end. Best players were Flynn Kennedy, Harry Middleton, Matt Scholtes, Ryan Wilson, Nick Fox and Jet Clarke. Our Under 18’s were short this week due to many players being unavailable but that didn’t stop this top side from performing once again. Grant has this group playing some very good footy and there are many senior footballers in the making amongst them. Best players were Tom Webster, Harvey Neocleous. Cohen Ruyters, 2 meter Peter Strong, Jacob VanIwaarden and Beau White. If we thought the thirds were short for players then our reserves were really short. Huge thankyou to the thirds boys that doubled up and although we are challenged every week with numbers, this group keep getting the job done and have now moved into the top 3. A terrific effort so far and as with the thirds, many of these young men will play senior footy in the near future. Best players on the day were Riley Loprese with 6 goals from a wing, Thomas McMahon, Rick Battista, Justin Barnes, Trent Hourigan and Lachy McDonald. With a good crowd present for the Premiership reunions of 1968, 1978, 1998 & 2008 coupled with milestone 100 senior games for Nic Quenault and Adrian Slottje, the senior side were keen to get back on the winners list and start to push toward securing a finals spot. In a scrappy game of footy they eventually ran out comfortable winners with best players on the day being Tate Marsh, Bailey Cameron, Darren White, Wilson Gaudion and Lee Stockdale. WOW!! What a game our U15s had in their first win of the season. They played like they had been winning all year, pulling off a resounding victory over Wonthaggi 37-14. Congratulations to the girls & Tracey. In A grade we saw the long awaited return of Kate French and Ramayer Gourley. They definitely

THE MAROONS made a difference with Kate producing a BOC performance. Next week also sees the return of Bec Jennings and hopefully Lily Van Berkel, which will complete the A Grade team for the FIRST TIME this season - I’m sure Caitlan will be relieved. Jnr “Coaches” Awards: U13 – Sophie Little, Anesu Gwara & Amali Adams, U15 – Amity Blair, Charlotte Di Toro & Ella Fothergill, U17 – Lauryn King-Church, Matilda Van Berkel & Chelsea Livingstone. Snr Awards: C Grade – Amie Jackson, Loren Ponton & Saskia Eenjes, B Grade – Nicole Jennings, Bree Guttridge & Alyce Murphy, A Grade – Kate French, Maddie Stockdale & Heidi Gaudion. This week we welcome Warragul to the home of the Maroons in what is a crucial game for both senior sides. We welcome all supporters and players into the social rooms at the end of the game, meals will be served at around 6pm if you would like to partake. Once again, thankyou to all our wonderful volunteers and sponsors that help us out each season.

Good luck to all participants taking part today. Go Maroons.

CLUB NOTES WARRAGUL It was welcome to Drouin for the Orange Round which is make people aware of the scourge of domestic violence in our society. Well done to the organizers driving that. It is also our annual sponsors day giving us the opportunity to say a huge thank you to our loyal and generous sponsor group that we appreciate so much. They enjoyed a fine meal and guest speaker Rodney Hogg who entertained with his many stories of his cricket career. The day was also a special one for Drouins Bob McCallum who ran out in the Hawks jumper for the 200th time. Bob has been a true champion of the Drouin club and has proudly represented the league and Vic Country on many occasions. Our coach Steven Kidd was generous in his praise for Bob in the after match and a guard of honor was a fitting touch. For us it was another vital game after some good form in recent outings and was an opportunity for young Mason McGarrity to show his wares in his senior debut. His chance came about after some super games in the thirds and he was very much at home. The Gulls got off to a ripping start only to be pegged back by a determined Hawk outfit who got within 9 points in the third. Our blokes rallied and with Nate Paredes playing his 50th in sparkling form to be adjudged the Downtowner best on ground along with a solid back half we took away the game by 32 points and reclaimed the Gazette Cup. Jake Hughes ( Railway Hotel award ) has shone in his last few games along with Jack Deen ( Intersports ) and another defender in Matt Rennie ( Frankies award ) who was a standout player again. Mitch Nobelius loves a good feed and will dine at Maloneys Pizza after his game and Tom Muir is off to Voyage Fitness. Braeden and Nate bagged 3 apiece. Reserves:

Our reserves made a statement against the Hawks in their game virtually wrapping the game up by the first break. The return of Dylan Proctor was pleasing and he made his mark on the game in a best on performance. Leigh Sheehan was his damaging self with Rowan Lawson - Pepper getting plenty of the footy again. Lucas Monacella had a very good game as did Notty and Jake Orlicki. Gulls by 69.

42

No under 18s last week so the 4ths got a bit of a sleep in before their battle with the youngest of the Hawks. The visitors hadn’t notched up a win this year but despite some wayward kicking got the bragging rights over our lads by 18 points in the end. The Gulls were very much in the contest before a last quarter effort by Drouin sealed the game. Josh Bloye is rarely out of the awards and takes out the Warraview Joinery award. Harry Pyle will look slick before this weeks games after a visit to Sharkies Uppercuts while Jake Kallady got the Maoloneys Pizza award. Tim Bloye will be pumping iron at Voyage Fitness while Jai Serong dines at Maccas. Coaches award this time to Braeden Notman. Netball: The netballers had some milestones to celebrate along with some great wins last weekend. Jaime Rollinson played her 250th game, Kelly Sheehan 200, Grace Cant 150 and Maddie Stevenson 50. Well done girls. The A grade side enjoyed a terrific win over Drouin along with the under 13s. Its Silver Circle Day again tomorrow so don’t miss out on one of the best social days on our calendar. Good to see so many from both clubs in the rooms along with the umpires after the game. This week it’s a blockbuster against the Maroons. GO GULLS.
