2018 TRFM GIPPSLAND LEAGUE RECORD
PLAYER MILESTONE CHRIS LAVERTY – MAGPIES NEW GAMES RECORD HOLDER Magpies premiership side that defeated Morwell in the 2008 grand final. He went on to feature in his second Sale premiership when the Magpies defeated Maffra in the 2012 grand final.
During his career at Sale he won back to back senior coach’s awards, and was named in the Magpies 2000’s Team of the Decade. Laverty was selected in the WGLFL Team of the Year in 2006 and 2007 and was runner up in the club 2007 best and fairest count, the same year he also played for the WGLFL side in the VCFL Championship games played at Sale Oval. He played his 100th senior game in 2008 and then won the prestigious Past Players most valuable player trophy in 2013. He reached the 200 game mile stone in 2014.
Sale Football Netball Club’s Chris Laverty will create a new club record when he plays his 287th senior game for the Magpies in the Gippsland League Round 14 premier league match against Wonthaggi at Sale Oval on Saturday.
The record for senior games played is currently held by recently retired Kane Fraser with 286 games and who broke the record in 2013 that had been held by the legendary ruckman Bob Mason since 1962. Laverty began his football at Sale Catholic College before breaking into senior football at Sale in 2001 when he played three senior games. His career blossomed over the next three years until he went interstate in 2005 to try his luck at South Adelaide in the SANFL. Returning to the Magpies in 2006 Laverty proved to be a great acquisition to the senior side. Quickly recognized as a team leader he captained the

The ginger headed Laverty’s style makes him a real crowd pleaser. He is quick with excellent close to ground skills. Hard to match up on, he has played in a number of positions in the Magpies lineup and has so far in his career with Sale has kicked 93 goals. Even so when he finally retires he will probably be best remembered as an attacking defender. Demonstrating exemplary leadership he is one of Sale’s most determined competitors when he pulls on the number six black & white jumper. The likeable Laverty has always been prominent in senior vote counts and was awarded Life Membership in 2012.
To be the club games record holder is just reward for this truly dedicated and passionate clubman. With age still on his side, 300 senior games is well within reach for the 34 year old. He then would be the first Sale player to reach 300 games and would join five other Gippsland’s premier football league senior players to have reached the 300 game major mile stone. Tassie Deacon - Sale Football Club Historian

LIVE GAME TUNE INTO 99.5
Round 15 – Saturday 28th July
MOE V MORWELL
PAST ROUND 15's By Paul Carter
5 YEARS AGO … 27 JUL & 3 AUG, 2013 Wonthaggi broke a four game losing streak in style when they visited Moe and returned with a 98 point victory to their credit. After an inaccurate first term the Power, led by eight goals from Lucas White, had quarters of 7, 6 and 5 goals. Leongatha kept their hopes of making the finals alive with a strong win over Warragul. Cade Maskell (6 goals) and Pat McGrath controlled the midfield for the Parrots with Nick Nagel also on target with six goals. A solid first half saw Sale ahead of Bairnsdale by 47 points at the long break. Young Josh Dunkley was named as Sale’s best as they powered on a further nine goals in the third term, Kane Fraser and Justin McLay sharing the goalkicking honours with five each. In the second week of the split round Maffra, in their 1000th game in this league, scored an important win over Traralgon to jump into third place on the ladder. Three weeks later, as the Eagles sat 3rd with an inferior percentage to Traralgon (4th), but a game clear of the Maroons, the importance of this win was evident. Maffra led by a goal at three quarter time, but kicked six goals to four in the final term to run out twenty point winners. Sam Bristow led a solid Maffra defence, while Michael Geary stood out for the Maroons. Morwell and Drouin were separated by just two points at quarter time at Drouin. After that it was all Morwell as they added 9, 8 and 8 goals. Dean Macdonald and coach Harmit Singh kicked five goals each and were named as the Tigers’ best two.

reflected the effects of the rain. The match at Moe was played in mud with water spraying up as desperate players fought for the ball. Moe’s early three goal lead was pegged back by Traralgon, who led by two points at the final break. Moe rallied, led by Ashley Payne and coach Troy Makepeace, to add 1.5 while keeping the Maroons scoreless. Adam Kennedy, returning from a lengthy break due to injury, kicked four goals, including three of Moe’s four first quarter goals. Just eight goals were kicked at Warragul, four each to the Gulls and Sale. Sale’s score sat at 2.6.18 at three quarter time, but they added a crucial further two majors to take the points. The other two games were decided by big first quarters. Morwell kicked 6.3 to 0.3 against Garfield and Leongatha started with 5.4 to 0.1 against Drouin, margins that saw them safely to victory. Ryan Allan kicked five goals for Morwell. Maffra had the bye.

20 YEARS AGO … 1ST AUGUST, 1998 Three big wins and a thriller was the story to come out of Round 15, 1998, with the battle for 4th and 5th on the ladder still raging. Traralgon, Leongatha and Moe were clearly going to be the top three, with a four game break to the rest. Five teams, from Maffra, 4th with six wins, to Warragul, 8th with four wins, were still a chance of making the Final Five. Moe broke their game with Morwell apart with a seven goal third quarter, while Maffra and Leongatha were far too strong for Wonthaggi and Bairnsdale respectively. Anthony Waller’s eight goals in a losing side was impressive, as was Moe’s three pronged forward line of Jordan Meikle (5 goals), Paul Walsh (5) and Dean Caldow (4). Tim Traill (9) and Matt Mansfield (6) kicked more than half of Leongatha’s goals. Sale and Warragul went goal for goal in the first half, two goals each in both the first and second quarters. Warragul kicked five goals to three in the third term to gain a break, but was unable to go on with the job as Sale overtook them with four unanswered goals in the final quarter. Brad Wynd led the scoring for Sale with five goals, Graeme Collins and Mark Russell listed as the Magpies’ best. Scott Jinks and Adrian Carr won their positions well for Warragul. Traralgon had the bye.

30 YEARS AGO … 30TH JULY, 1988 Ladder leader Traralgon suffered its second loss for the season when they visited second placed Sale. Inaccuracy from the outset didn’t serve the Maroons well. Although they led 2.6 to 2.1 at quarter time, Sale took the lead in the second quarter and went on to win by ten points despite having five fewer scoring shots. Jasmin Baryczka kicked seven goals for Sale with Steven Dunkley and Jamie Freeman named as the Magpies’ best. Russell Northe and Frank Bourke worked tirelessly for Traralgon. Bairnsdale (5th) played a “must win” game against fourth placed Morwell. A loss by the Redlegs would see them two games out of the Four with just three rounds to play. They did everything right for three quarters to lead by 50 points at three quarter time. Morwell coach Brett Stanistreet inspired his team and they piled on an incredible 10.1 in the final term, however Bairnsdale was able to muster two goals of its own to hold on to win by three points. John Mulqueen (Bairnsdale ) and Brett Hayes (Morwell) were their sides’ best players. The other three games saw clear-cut victories. Glen Thorson kicked nine goals for Leongatha in their big win over Moe. Warragul kicked fifteen first half goals to claim the win over Churchill, while an incredibly inaccurate Maffra peppered the goals for 49 scoring shots to beat TTU by twenty goals.

Wins to top sides Yallourn/Yallourn North and Traralgon saw them sit two games clear of the pack after Round 15, 1978. The battle for the final two finals places was wide open with Warragul, Leongatha, Morwell and Moe in contention. Traralgon weren’t troubled in beating Bairnsdale by 90 points, Daryl Bird and Charlie Healey the best two for the Maroons. YYN were pushed all the way by Morwell before the Blues edged their way to a three goal win. Coach Ray Koeleman and ruckman John Lovison led the way for the Blues, Kevin Smith the best for the Tigers. Moe came from a 23 point half time deficit to kick seven third quarter goals to gain the lead from Sale. Peter Bacon kicked six goals for the Lions and Ray Christie five for the Magpies – Moe home by fourteen points. Leongatha kicked 8.4 to one behind to put their stamp on their game against Maffra. They bookended it with eight final quarter goals with eleven players sharing the 21 goals. Warragul had the bye.

Wonthaggi has found winning there difficult lately, the Power’s last victory over the Magpies there being a five point win in 2010. Since entering the league in 1995 Wonthaggi has travelled well, with 9 wins from 12 games at Bairnsdale and they still edge Sale 11 wins to 10 at Sale. Sale is on a mission to finish in the top three this year and that is entirely in their own hands. While the Power will be disappointed with season 2018, they would like nothing more than to take a Top Five scalp or two in the remaining weeks.

they had a run of 13 wins against their close neighbour. Morwell has done well to regenerate its Senior list with many youngsters settling in to their roles in the team. Moe’s form has been somewhat inconsistent and their hope of a top three finish now looks lost. Moe will look to consolidate its Elimination Final spot on the ladder as there is still plenty of competition on the ladder for 4th and 5th. Today’s game is one Moe simply must win with finals looming a month away.

After a five goal third term, Drouin began the final quarter with a nineteen point advantage. Traralgon is a team of great pride and is never beaten until the final siren, and it took everything the Maroons had to boot home six goals to one to emerge two goal winners. Drouin has continued to improve as the season has gone on, and should Traralgon find themselves in this predicament again today, it might be a case of too little, too late.

CLUB NOTES MOE Round 14 vs Leongatha Fortunately for all players and supporters the heavy downpour that had become the norm throughout the week did not cause a great deal of havoc on the field last weekend at Leongatha. In the football, teams were able to move the ball with decent link up, whilst our netballers escaped the winter chill in the comfort of the indoor centre. Elsewhere, the club would like to congratulate Jacob Wood and Carly Mullen-Bianconi on their recent engagement. Hopefully there is a premiership to celebrate before the wedding. Football Seniors Came up against a slick Leongatha outfit that turned it on in the second half after both sides shared honours in the first two quarters. Startlingly, Moe kept Leongatha goalless in both the second and fourth terms, but the Parrots were still able to end the day with thirty scoring shots. The Lions found honest contributions from a few experienced campaigners as well as a number of eager youngsters, but ultimately Leongatha’s work rate and ability to spread quickly and make the ground look big ensured that they rounded out the day victorious. Best players for Moe were Tommy Long, Lachlan Rees, James Blaser, Ryan Farmer, Grady Cocksedge and Charlie Rieniets. A dangerous few weeks await the Senior group as both Warragul and Traralgon are nipping at their heels for a place in the top five. Reserves Secured a hard earned win to continue their fine season. The match was tight all day with a few nervous moments late keeping all involved on their toes. Moe held a slender lead after failing to convert early which proved to be enough in the end. Best players were James Moorcroft-Heslop, Dos Prestige, the man who prepares vary casually Jai Massese, the man who prepares even more casually John Chessells, along with Aaron Wilson and Luke Mackay. Thanks to Rocky for umpiring on short notice. Under 18’s Coach Sim took control for the day as the Under Eighteens skipped away to an impressive win. After a closely fought opening ten minutes, Moe were able to open the game up and found scoring options aplenty in what turned into a one sided contest. Also, a kid from Leongatha had a full beard, which caused quite the talking point. Best players were Trent Baldi, the man who declined a trip to Malta Josh Galea, Wade Anderson, Rylan Henkel, Leo Connolly and Jack Walton. Under 16’s Continued their good form over the past month, making it five straight and catapulting to second spot on the ladder. The Lions and Parrots went head to head for three quarters before Moe were able to steady in the last and kicked away to a comfortable enough win. Best players were Matt Devon who notched four, Jess McGrath, Matt Neal, Tajh Eden, Matt Heywood and Bailey Brown. Netball A Grade
MAJOR RAFFLE First prize $38K Audi! SEE A SENIOR FOOTBALL OR NETBALLER FOR A TICKET $50 a ticket, drawn after the last home game. 5 prizes up for grabs. Continued to hold onto their place in the top three, after defeating Leongatha 41 to 64. The Lions dominance in the attacking third was telling as the scoreboard reflected a match in which Moe were able to dictate terms throughout. B Grade As some matches are just an extension of training, so too was this one. Moe did as they pleased and virtually doubled their opponents score with a ruthless display of top quality netball. The side will meet greater opposition in the next fortnight, with matches against fellow top three teams to come. Best players were Rachel Shaw and Haley Taylor, who is welcome to barrack for Richmond come September. C Grade Were commanding winners in their match, easily accounting for all questions that were posed to them by their counterparts. With four rounds remaining, the side can still push for the all-important double chance in what is shaping as a pulsating finals series. Under 17’s Had a very important 34 to 31 win. The match was something of a mini-final, with only one game separating both teams at the start of the game. With the ball ping-ponging from end to end, Moe were able to keep their composure in the contest and scrap in over the line. Best players were Charlize Bird and Elly Brown. Under 15’s Also secured an important win, getting the job done 39 to 43. With only half a game separating the sides before the match, Moe were able to execute their skills in congestion and found enough positive ball movement to grind out the victory. Under 13’s Went down in an exciting match 34 to 32. With momentum see-sawing throughout the four quarters the match could have easily gone either way. It will be a tight race to the finish in the Thirteens, with every match now virtually an elimination final.

CLUB NOTES WARRAGUL In another make or break round for the Gulls given the ladder positions, we headed down the highway to Traralgon who were perched one spot above us. There was a distinct feeling among the group that the Gulls could overcome the once triumphant Maroons the way our side had been performing. Scoring was difficult for both sides early and despite having the majority of entries into the forward 50 the first half gave us a return of 3’ 9 whilst holding the Maroons to a no goal half. “Skidda” was measured in his address at the main break but it was clearly the back six that were a linchpin in the positive first half and for weeks prior. The third quarter yielded 5 goals to 2 giving the visitors a 45 point break and was the best stanza of attacking footy I’ve seen from the Gulls for some time. It was a pleasing 25 point win in the end despite a couple of late goals to Traralgon to ease the pain. Gulls into the five. Matt Rennie has been superb all year and was a worthy Downtowner best on ground. Tom Muir took out the Railway Hotel and Bistro award in another super performance. Kim Drew and Matt Ross were at their attacking best and will enjoy the Intersports and Frankies awards. Jedd Serong is off to Maloneys Pizza after a ripping game and Brad Hefford starred on his wing courtesy of Voyage Fitness. Reserves: You play 100 minutes of footy while your mates are enjoying a beverage and a hotdog just to share the points with the opposition and probably doing a hammy getting on the team bus. Yes, of course it’s better than losing. Isn’t it? Not by the look on the face of reserves coach Scratcha McIntosh for about 4 hours and probably his opposition coach as well. However a draw it was after squandering a 4 goal lead but it’s certain now that our reserves are finals bound. Best were Tim Davine , Will Cole, Leigh Sheehan, Tim Brady , Lachie Miller and Mick Lynn. Our under 18s had a rest the week before but were up against the top side. Our commitment to fostering our developing juniors is great but obviously affects their line up as well. It’s a pleasant problem to have and the Maroons have a good side so no excuses there as they were far better this time around. Darcy
Norton was the Warraview Joinery best player with Braxton Ah Mat close behind him. Thomas Baum was in everything and Patrick Mulqueen is off to Maccas for a well deserved feed. Andrew Baxter will look slick with his Sharkeys Uppercuts hairstyle after his fine game. The under 16s also came up against a good Maroons unit and will benefit from every outing. We have a great group of young blokes coming though with terrific parents who are a massive benefit to our club and these kids will taste success. Brody Tutton and Matthew Pecoraro were our best with Matthew Boyles hot on their heels. Josh Bloye is another much improved lad along with Harry Notman and Beau Cusden. Netball: Our netballers have been super this year thanks to the hard work of each and every girl on the list. They came up against a strong Maroons and couldn’t quite manage a win last week. Watch out for some good wins this week. Silver Circle: Last week we had some off field best on performances at the annual Silver Circle. A big thank you to all the organizers and caterers. It was a great day. Bobs Book: Meet our very own Bob Murphy and get a signed copy of his new book “ Leather Soul ”on August 11 from 2 pm. This week it’s a warm welcome to Leongatha in another block buster for the club. Travel safely and GO GULLS.

CLUB NOTES LEONGATHA Firstly, the LFNC would like to acknowledge the dedication and hard work of those who put together our annual Goods and Services Auction. The night was a huge success once again. To those who came along to the night and enjoyed the meal and purchased items, we thank you one and all. A massive thank you must go to Cam and Chris Kindellan who organised the event with the support of the club and catering committees. Cam and Chris worked tirelessly to put together a night that ran fantastically, exceeding all expectations. Of course the night relies heavily on our auctioneer, the one and only Terry Ginnane. Terry has been a great supporter of the LFNC for many years. It must be said that Terry’s legacy at our annual auction can never be quantified. His skills are enormous and he simply ‘makes the night’. On the sporting side of things last Saturday was a big day for both clubs in football and netball. It is the time of year now that the season takes shape and finals sides are determined. The football was tough work all day. Both junior sides found Moe to big and strong to handle. That said Moe are very strong contenders and our boys gave their all till the end. The Reserves game was played hard and fast all day. Our lads stuck at it and came late in the last only for Moe to steady and hold them out. The Seniors seemed to have Moe at arms length all day but some wayward kicking gave them a sniff until the last quarter. Over at the netball it was mostly Moe having the upper hand. The U13s again got home in a close one, the 15s and 17s both lost by narrow
30
margins after making errors late in the game and the senior sides were all well beaten. Once again a shout out to our junior girls who continually fill up into the senior grades and give their best every week. Well done girls you are laying the foundation for your future netball and you will reap the benefits going forward. Auction players this week were C grade Paris Rogers. B grade Sara Riseley. A grade Kasey Rump. Reserves Adan Trotto. Seniors Social News Get ready to get amongst it folks! Bogan Bingo is coming to The Avairy!!!!! 7:00pm Saturday 4th of August after the Drouin home game. CLUB NOTES MAFFRA A quote from The Maffra Football Story - "nominated by the authors as the most outstanding contributor both on and off the field of any individual" refers to Briagolong's Bill Pleydell, who chose to play for Maffra as a young man. He passed away last week after being at our last home game watching his grandchildren carry on his legacy. A man not afraid of a challenge, in 1964, at age 24, he was thirds coach, treasurer and a member of our first finals team in the LVFL - the next year he was all of those and club best and fairest. While also bringing up a family, he went on to four years as treasurer, 10 years as secretary and served a year as president in 1994. A month ago, he welcomed his brother Jim, joining him in our Hall of Fame. While he did not achieve a premiership personally, he coached the reserves to the grand final in 1973. While not alone, his stoic record helped Maffra to survive, at major league level, into this 21st century. Premierships recognise significant momentary achievements, but selfless contributions over decades truly warrants this man's legendary status. Vale Bill. Last week, Morwell leant our U16s four of their better players in order to make a competitive match, their sportsmanship was much appreciated and we hope that they can go on and make the finals. Again an U14, Zak Harrington, featured in our best - others were Curtis Cook, Cal Hennig, Declan Scriven, Tom Thatcher, Harry Gravener and Mac Huts. The thirds award winners, after a healthy win, were Joe Ziino, Josh Edey, Scott Shephard, Rick Howard, Max Gravener and Oakley Henry - they too needed three U16's. The Ressies had little resistance in their quest to atone for last year’s finals loss to premiers Morwell. Mitch Dignan, Bill's grandson, played a powerful role as usual but his first goal saw an overwhelming flood of teammates in support. Dylan Alexander eased back into action, Nick Wozniak notched a lazy ten and Darcy Gray jumped off the very short term injury list. In spite of the scoreline, Morwell didn’t concede many easy strings of possession, with our hard nuts midfield and defenders comprising our better players. Sam Pleming intercept possessions needed to be strong, Jack Johnstone and Jaryd Clohesy's needed a head of steam to shake their tackles and Lachy Channing and Danny Butcher flexed in and out reach. Many times, it was a tackle-fest for minutes on end.
34
Morwell’s off field performance was first class - their afternoon tea an appetising mix, their hot food and coffee tasty and their assistance in finding a lost item deeply appreciated. Over on the courts, despite an uncharacteristically full team, our A graders buckled to ladder leaders after a relatively even first half. Coco Henry moved well in goal attack, navigating Morwell’s impressive defence, to see plenty of the ball, while our Emma Allman provided her usual stability in centre, and hope late in the game with a couple of turnovers. Unreflected in the scoreline was the intensity of the B grade game, with our girls making a bid to scale up the ladder close, as finals are deceivingly near. Mikki Callahan had an outstanding game, tall under the ring and snapping up goals with characteristic accuracy. Our ladder-leading C graders continued forging their great form through the fixture, winning by 24 goals. Anna Gaw scooped an award for her consistent contribution to the winning margin, joined by metronome Myah Proud who set the pace of the midcourt. Wins across the board last week in juniors – 32-22 in the under 13s, 21-40 in the under 15s, and a particular highlight was the nail-biting three goal upset win in the under 17s. At home against Bairnsdale, and the past players, this week we’re hoping for a fast track which will suit the players’ and the supporters’ excitement levels.

CLUB NOTES
LUB L C AL
This week we welcome Wonthaggi for round 15. Our local hero is GRAHAM CHALMERS REAL ESTATE. The big news coming out of The Nest this week is our very our Chris ‘Lar, Red, Gingerbread, Cwisss’ Laverty is breaking the games record for the club with his 287th game being played this weekend. It is a fantastic effort from Lar who played his first senior game in 2001 and continued to play 2 more senior games that year. He kept training hard and improving with the more games he played at Sale over the next three seasons before he ventured to Adelaide in 2005. Returning to Sale in 2006, he made an immediate impact in the seniors and became a vocal leader on and off the field, his eagerness to better not just himself but his team mates was a clear indication of his passion for the club and was rewarded by Captaining the club in 2008 to the premiership. He was also a part of the leadership group in the 2012 premiership side. During his career, Lar has won many awards, some include: back to back coaches’ awards, The Past Players MVP 2013, Sale’s 2000’s Team of the Decade, WGLFL team of the year 2006-2007 and was runner up in the B&F in 2007 and of course his 2 premiership medals in 2008 and 2012. Lar is a great competitor and hates to lose a contest (or an argument), his fight and determination will see him play the game he loves as long as he physically can. As an attacking defender/midfielder, we hope to see Cwisss play onto to well over 300 games, a feat that only 5 players have reached for the entire Gippsland League. Welldone Lar on a magnificent Milestone. Other big achievements this week include Andrew Quirk who is playing his 150th senior game and Mel Johnstone who is suiting up for her 100th Game of netball for the club. A massive feat by both players who have been great contributors to our club.

CLUB NOTES WONTHAGGI What a cold and miserable day to play any sport on Saturday. Heaps of rain the night before, and windy. It would have been a good morning to stay in bed. But not for Bairnsdale juniors and officials. We would like to thank the junior players and the club in general, for agreeing to start their games earlier, so we could help celebrate our 2008 reserves premiership with a shortened scratch match against our current team. We also celebrated the 1988 football and netballers premierships and 2008 Seniors, Reserves and under 18’s premierships. It was a big day, that went well into the night. Thank you to all who attended. U16’s This was expected to be a crucial game, in settling down the top position on the ladder. We came out well, but 1.5 to 1pt at quarter time wasn’t the start we wanted. From then on it was an arm wrestle. With 2.1 to 1 straight in the last, we were able to secure a 7 pt win and top spot. U18’s. As is the case most weeks, we struggled for numbers, Some of the u16’s helped out again. The away team had a good win in the end. It’s so good to see our hard core base of players putting their all into each weeks U18’s game. Your numbers are always
home game players only. Well, what more should be said. Seniors, Still with too many injuries to make a competitive team, but we battled on. The inclusion of Jack Blair from Collingwood VFL. Made people excited that we could have a spark to ignite the team. Unfortunately after a crude tackle, Jack took no further part in the game. With our usual slow start, the game was reasonable even from quarter time onwards. B Grade, Awesome game against Bairnsdale, you all adapted well with another new combination. With 3 players out with injuries, we got down to business. Great work girls. Awards, Cape Tavern – Lily, and Wonthaggi Club – Sophie. A BIG THANK YOU TO ALL OUR MANY

We played third placed Sale last Sunday and again competed well against a high class combination. The ground was a little slippery after some heavy rain but it was a good standard game. The senior game result was a 14 point win to Sale with the game tightening up right to the end. We had our chances but were unable to kick those crucial goals when we needed to. Our boys fought out the match well and now know we can compete against the best teams in the competition. Jamie Ferguson is proving a real asset to the team. Best players were: assistant coach Eddie Morris (Barry Plant Award), Liam Anderson (Middels ) , James Ferguson (Family Hotel ), Bob Mc Callum (Kim’s Kitchen ) and David Miller (Steam and Riddles). The Reserves faced a Sale team who had quite a few under 18 players into the side. Sale kicked the first couple of goals but after that it was a tight contest. Again we need to take our chances better. It was a good standard game with our boys fighting out the contest as usual. Best players were: Rhys Fairlie (Select Office ), Kurtis Harper (Community Bank ) , Simon Gardiner ( Middels Award ) , Will Bryce (Drouin Gourmet Café ) and Rob Baker ( Family Hotel Award). Our under 16 side had a tough day against a quality Sale squad. The conditions were slippery but Sale coped better with the surface. They were bigger and stronger and took their chances. The injuries to three of our players didn’t help but the young hawks fought the game out bravely. Best players were: Bailey Prior (Select Office Award), Josh Maric (Intersport) , Logan Corbet (Intersport ) , Thomas Jenkinson (Community Bank ), Thomas Evans (Community Bank) and Lachie Jagoe ( Jakk’s Pizza). Our Club person of the week is a hardworking and loyal club man, Ben “Strawbs” Proctor. Ben is a long serving player and coach who is now managing our Past Players Group which has grown significantly this year. Ben is a committee member and contributes positively to the club and is always willing to help. We really appreciate “Strawbs” contributions to our club. He wins the Drouin Family Hotel Club Person of the Week. We are looking forward today’s return game against Sale. CLUB NOTES TRARALGON
TRARALGON Last week we welcomed the Warragul FNC to our home ground keen for our seniors to make amends for the loss to the gulls earlier this season. Unfortunately, this was not to be and our boys put in possibly their worst performance for many years. Talking to long term supporters and sponsors, no one could remember the last time we did not kick a goal in the first half of any match. Warragul were absolutely all over us and it was only their inaccuracy that gave us any hope. With 12 shots on gaol to 3 in the first half, we had some work to do. The second half saw us work a little harder but in a very disappointing and slightly embarrassing display, we were well beaten by team eager to play finals. Some of our better players were Michael Burge who battled hard all day in the ruck, Kody Wilson, Dylan Loprese who kicked 4 of our 6 goals for the game and in his first senior game, Justin Barnes put in a good performance. The reserves once again took to the field light on for numbers and had 7 thirds players double up to help us out. Warragul got away to a fast start and had us on the back foot at the first break. Our young team worked extremely hard to get themselves back into the game and in the end, a draw was a worthy result for two evenly matched teams. Best players were the McMahon brothers Jackson and Tom, Rick Battista, Will Broadbent and Darcy Barnes. Our thirds keep marching along and played a very entertaining game of footy. Running hard for each other they had 32 scoring shots to 4 against a side sitting just outside the top five. Best players were J. Palmer, C. Ruyters, B. Cheetham, K. Marsh, L. Johnson, P. Akram. Thanks to the guys that keep doubling up for the reserves. In the earliest game of the day, the under 16’s showed they are still improving and had a convincing win again this week. Although they probably wont quite make finals this year, as a development team the coaches are doing a marvellous job with this young group. Best players were C. Doultree, K. Ruyters, L. D''Angelo, J. Rodda, R. Wilson, D. Duncan This week we travel down to Drouin and with the thirds having a bye, we look forward to promoting some more of these boys to the reserves to gain some experience in readiness for next season. Hopefully a couple get a senior game by the end of the season so keep an eye out for them.

FOOTBALL CLUB
THE MAROONS The main interest will be if the senior side can bounce back and really start a push for that final spot in the top five. A win today is critical for that. A Grade were back to their expected form pulling off a strong win against Warragul. With Lily Van Berkel returning next week and Ramayer still easing into full games, the coming games will be very interesting. Our U13s returned to winning form and our U15s managed to pull off consecutive wins. Jnr “Coaches” Awards: U13 – Anesu Gwara, Emma Farley & Dempsey Blair, U15 – Chelsey Webster, Molly Van Berkel & Alannah Webster, U17 – Trax Hanratty, Heidi Gaudion & Lauryn King-Church. Snr Awards: C Grade – Sophie Membrey, Hannah Aurish & Loren Ponton, B Grade – Jaimee Salleh, Kristy Jennings & Alyce Murphy, A Grade – Stacey O’Brien, Bec Jennings & Caitlan Ponton. Congratulations to Heidi Gaudion who played her 100th Junior Game last Saturday. We have the week off next week so we will see you all again at the Traralgon Rec Reserve on August 11 when we take on Moe in what are important games for all our footy side. Once again, thankyou to all our wonderful volunteers and sponsors that help us out each season. Good luck to all participants taking part today. Go Maroons.
