AFL GIPPSLAND WOMENS
The first season of the AFL Gippsland Women’s development league came to a close as Boisdale Briagolong went through the season undefeated to claim the inaugural premiership. The Bombers have been the side to beat all year and capped off a memorable season defeating Bunyip in the decider last Sunday. The competition comprised of 6 sides from across Gippsland including Bairnsdale, Boisdale Briagolong, Bunyip, Garfield, Nyora & Morwell East.
Boisdale Recreation Reserve played host to the Grand Final and with a large crowd in attendance the Bombers got off to a fast start. Kicking with a slight breeze to the southern end the ball would spend the majority of the quarter in the Boisdale half. Belinda Marshall kicked the first goal for Boisdale with a skilful snap that was met with a big cheer from the crowd and Boisdale bench. At the quarter break the Bombers led 2.4-16 to the Bulldogs no score. Bunyip coach Adrian Bray’s quarter time speech must have worked with Bunyip coming out to play. After a prolonged forward thrust Bunyip’s Madelaine Fraser kicked their first goal and the first of the second term. Boisdale were managing to get forward 50 entries and a quick reply by crowd favourite Nicole Reeves had the margin back to 16. The Bulldogs continued to surge and arguably their best player for the match Nicole Cicciari kicked their second to bring the margin back in reach. A late Lashay Tricker mark and goal squared the quarter for Boisdale who took a 17 point lead into half time. The premiership quarter proved to be decisive with two more unanswered goals to the Bombers setting up match winning lead at ¾ time. The Bulldogs never gave in and early pressure in the last quarter created another goal. The margin though was along way out of reach as the Bombers surged forward for one final attack the siren sounded crowning them premiers for 2018. The true spirit of the competition was truly on show as a boisterous presentation ceremony and after game
2
reception was well celebrated by both sides. Boisdale Briagolong 6.13-49 taking home the first ever seniors womens football premiership in Gippsland to Bunyips 3.018. Boisdale Bragolong livewire Latoya Sim was named as the AFL Gippsland Best on Ground medallist. If your club is interested in more information about fielding a team in the 2019 competition. 10 YEARS AGO … 9TH AUGUST, 2008 Morwell pulled off the most remarkable of victories to maintain its place in the top three on the ladder. With no more than a minute left to play the Tigers trailed Drouin by eight points and looked set for a loss. Lachlan Dowling then goalled and, on the resumption of play, the ball was sent back into the Morwell forward line where Michael “Funky” Duncan kicked truly to gain the lead, which had been lost in the third quarter. Ryan Allan and Michael “Chunky” Duncan were the best for Morwell, while Bob McCallum put in another great game for Drouin. In the top versus bottom match, Sale didn’t have it all their own way against Leongatha. Fortunately their eight goal to two second quarter had given them a break as they won by 33 points. Ned Marsh and Andy Soumilas led Garfield to a great win over Moe, keeping the Stars’ finals hopes alive. Garfield was quick off the mark with

20 YEARS AGO … 8TH & 9TH AUG, 1998 After a fortnight where they had had great wins over Traralgon and Morwell, Moe, in front of a huge home ground crowd, was unable to maintain its winning record against Maffra. Accuracy in front of goal certainly played its part in the outcome of this match as the Lions had six more scoring shots than the Eagles, yet lost by nine points. A seven goal to three third quarter broke what had been a three point margin. Forwards Adrian Burgiel (Maffra)(5 goals) and Jordan Meikle (Moe)(6 goals) stood out for their respective teams. Veteran John Hutchins played his 200th Senior match for Maffra. Traralgon had a huge win over Bairnsdale, the margin blowing out beyond one hundred points with the Maroons kicking eleven goals in the final term. Leongatha was far too strong for Sale, coach Matt Mansfield and gun forward Tim Traill combining for eleven of the Parrots eighteen goals. Warragul visited Wonthaggi and was professional in its win, kicking five, five, five and four goals to win by 75 points. Ryan Flack was in top form for the Gulls with five goals, big Ben Webb dominating the ruckwork. Morwell had the bye.

30 YEARS AGO … 6TH AUGUST, 1988 Maffra versus Sale matches are always a big deal, but their Round 16 meeting in 1988 was one of their biggest for many years. Maffra (3rd) was at home to Sale (2nd) and in the Final Four finals system only the top two get the double chance. Sale got way early to lead by three goals at quarter time, Maffra chipping away at the deficit until they hit the lead in the third quarter to lead by four points at the final change. Former Frankston VFA players Geoff Raven and Peter Geddes starred for Maffra as they stormed to victory with 6.6 to 2.1 in the final term, the Eagles taking the prized second rung on the ladder. The gate of $7200 shows the size of the crowd when you consider the next biggest gate was $1150 at Warragul. Morwell cemented their finals place with a solid 33 point win against Leongatha, a win set up in the first half where they led by six goals at half time. Rod Newton led a cohesive Morwell defence with Allan Lowe and Peter Petrou combining for half of the Tigers’ fourteen goals. Warragul and Moe had quite similar wins over Bairnsdale and TTU respectively, both low scoring, torrid affairs where the home sides were in charge all day without being comfortable. The final game saw Traralgon completely dominate Churchill, Russell Northe (best afield) and Greg Morley (5 goals) showing out for the Maroons.

40 YEARS AGO … 29TH JULY, 1978 Six of the nine LVFL sides were still in contention for the Final Four as the Home and Away season (21 rounds) approached its final month. The upset of the round was sixth placed Moe pipping the league leaders, Yallourn/Yallourn North. The Lions won each of the first three quarters to lead by 5, 12 and 13 points. The Blues came home with 4.3 to 2.4, but Moe, led by Ray Cunneen and David Clinch, hung on to win by two points. Second placed Traralgon was also on the losers list when Leongatha desperately clung onto fourth place. Traralgon had led at all three breaks in play before the Parrots kicked four goals to two to take the match. Warragul also overcame an early deficit to beat Morwell. The Tigers kicked 5.7 to a goal in the opening term, but were restricted to just four goals after that as Warragul took the lead in the third quarter, going on to win by thirteen points. Terry Kilday led the scoring for Warragul with four goals. Bairnsdale was also quickly off the mark against Maffra with seven straight goals in the opening term, but they built upon their lead to win comfortably. Sale had the bye.

The Magpies have won seven of the last ten clashes, but there is always the element of doubt when they match up. The Redlegs popped up with two good wins at Sale in 2016 and 2017 when most pundits would have tipped Sale. Sale is heading for the finals this year and won’t want to have any upsets along the way, while Bairnsdale would love to take a high profile scalp.
Notes : In their first period in this league, Wonthaggi had an interesting history of matches against Morwell. The Tigers won the first seven meetings between 1995 and early 1998. Wonthaggi then won the next 19 games they played against the Tigers to the end of 2004. Since their return to this company in 2010 it has been a different story with neither team winning more than three games on the trot against the other. The good news for Power fans is that Morwell is sitting on a three game streak at the moment and some late wins will bring some joy as the home and away season comes to an end.

The Lions rose to the occasion and won at the Traralgon Recreation Reserve for the first time since 2008. Today they clash with both teams feeling the pressure of the consequences of what a loss will do to their finals hopes. They are currently in a three way battle, with Warragul, for the last two places in this year’s finals. While it’s not quite “mothballs” for the loser, it will certainly make the task that much harder.

The last six times they have met at today’s venue, Western Park, the Gulls have won three times and had a close call when they lost by just nine points in 2013. Warragul is a much improved team this year and they will give Maffra a real workout this afternoon. Of the three contenders for the Elimination Final spots, the Gulls have the most difficult run home in that they meet the three top sides. This week they are at home and they simply must make that count.

CLUB NOTES BAIRNSDALE This week we are hosting an AFL Gippsland Football and Netball Mental Health Round, it is important as a Football & Netball community that we continue to support and generate awareness around Mental Health. We as a club strive to provide a place where Footballers, Netballers, Members, Families and guests can come and be involved in a welcoming supportive environment.
ahead we see potential for our C grade to get a win on the board before the season ends. Good luck to all sides today.
Today we also welcome all of the clubs Past Players, Netballers, supporters, volunteers and officials to come along and enjoy our hospitality and Football & Netball action. This is our opportunity to catch up with some of our club people and share stories from seasons past.
Today we have approximately 60 volunteers who are helping make game day happen. The support from our club Woman & Men is the main ingredient for a successful day, thank you!
Last week was a trip the Eagles Nest, all Football and Netball had great matches on the day.
Challenge Yourself!
Our under age men again took home the 4 points, the Under 16’s Started strongly but allowed their opponents to get back in the game, Dunks was pretty happy overall but is looking for his charges to stick to their structures and run their matches out right until the final siren. The under 18’s were too strong for their opposition, they continue to impress and are building towards some September action. It was a tail of two halves for the seniors, the 1st half they showed their ability to score against the best defence in the competition but at times were too easy to score against, the signs are definitely there of a great group coming through.
Come on Redlegs!!!! Save the Date & Social Calendar Saturday August 4th V’s Sale – Past Players, Supporters and Volunteers round Followed by the Reverse Draw – See Frewy and Mick Mann for your tickets. Saturday August 18th V’s Leongatha – Progressive Dinner – Family friendly function – we will be Starting at the Club Rooms then heading to The Grand Terminus and The Bairnsdale Club inc. Supporting those who support us!
Netball only had 15 & Under girls with the win last week. Well done to Stella Fitzsimon and Lillian Strong receiving best on court, also Olivia East with a high shooting percentage for the match. Some great action across the board including C grade battling it against the top side, B Grade almost getting their second win and A grade going down in a thrilling match, by one goal. Looking

The seniors were up and about for the start of their game with Jarrod ‘Clinic’ Freeman kicking 3 goals in the opening quarter. In Round 15 at Moe last week you would have been forgiven for thinking it was early spring. It was a great day for sport but unfortunately
we only prevailed in 3 of the 10 games on the
day. NETBALL - Our U13’s started the day well,
winning their 4th game of the 2018 season. The
U17 side were the unlucky loser going down by a solitary goal and now drop from 3rd to 5th on the
N ET
ladder but should still play finals. ‘B’ Grade was a great contest but Moe got a decisive break in the 2nd half of the game. ‘A’ Grade continued on its winning way but recognition to Ella Pollutro and
4ths: Nathan Noblett, Tom Caile & Blake Hughes
Shelby Wulfers who had played in ‘B’ Grade but
stepped up due to other injuries. Best on court in
all grades were: ‘A’ Courtney Garth & Claire Allison ‘B’ Grade Maddi Hutchison and Nadine Sloan,
C Grade Maddi Schneider & Annie Little, U17’s Chloe Radford, Isla McCrae & Jaida Delicato, U15’s Ashlyn Pavey, Mikayla Couling & Anna
Solomon. U13’s Emma Darling, Taylah Pavey & Alice Mooney.
FOOTBALL - In the football department Brett
Sherriff’s U16’s had a great contest against 2nd
placed Moe and prevailed by 9 points to ensure
they will see finals action. Our U18’s and Reserves were both soundly beaten but are both being
tested for depth with the injuries in the seniors
draining players from both grades. In the Seniors, Moe was far better than our boys but young
players Reece Lewis, Shae Burzese and Luke Dal Pra continue to show their improving talent.
Best last week were Seniors: Tank Rosato & Zac
Anderson, 2nds: Pat McGrath & Ryan Mayo, 3rds: Matt Pollutro, James Solomon & Branden Purves

VOLUNTEERS – this week we acknowledge ‘Father Time’ Jack Huxtable. Most weeks Jack jogs up to the timekeepers box despite his 80 years and Jack does a great job and has been in local football for over 40 years. SOCIAL – A good night last Saturday at the Morwell Bowling Club with nearly 60 in attendance. As usual, the food and venue were very good. Special mention to Daisy Hill and her Mum Donna who attended despite being in Melbourne for netball commitments. Tonight is the big Mystery Bus Trip and dinner, so be quick and see Courtney Garth if you have not yet got your tickets. SPONSORS - MFNC wish to acknowledge the sponsors of our weekly player awards. Many thanks to Top Pub Morwell, Bridle Rd Pizza, JMac Painting, Peckish Café and Wyncity Entertainment for your ongoing club support. This week we host Wonthaggi in the Indigenous Round and we look forward to some great contests - Good luck to all teams participating and GO TIGERS!

CLUB NOTES LEONGATHA What a difference a week makes in football. The trip across to Warragul was a most pleasant one, with the sun shining and not a breath of wind the conditions for football and netball were simply superb. With finals spots starting to come into sharper focus the intensity of games certainly went up a notch.
The U16s kicked the day of with a strong win. They played a finals type brand of football but as it stands may find themselves just missing out on the finals. It's a real pity because when all our players are out on the ground we know we are able to match it with any side in the comp. The U18 game was a nail biter. With fortunes fluctuating for both sides during the game, it all came down to the last quarter. After an extremely tight tussle our boys came away with a 1-point victory. These boys need huge congratulations. Every week they are undermanned with players missing to higher duties, others on holidays and the injury toll has been shocking. But with the U16 boys stepping up and helping out and the senior members of the side carrying a huge load they are going to make the finals. A just reward for all the effort they and their coaching and support staff put in each week. The Reserves started like a house on fire, kicking 5 goals to 1 in the first stanza. They got a wrap up at quarter time and as is the way they proceeded to let the opposition have their way there after. It wasn't until late in the game that they switched back on and created the scoring opportunities that led to the win. The Senior game was a fiery encounter with Warragul desperate to make the finals. Our boys jumped them early and were in complete control of the match. There was then a period where the status quo was held before a couple of big clashes saw both teams upping the anti with their physicality. In the end we ran away with a 10 goal win. Over at the netball it was a familiar story. The Junior netball all played strong games to record wins. The U13s consolidated their spot in the top 3. The 15s also made sure they finish in the finals and the U17s now have their fate in their own hands. They play 3 sides below them in the run
home and should play finals. In the Senior grades the scores were closer than they have been recently. Everyone certainly had a crack and took it up to their Warragul opponents. Hopefully the girls can cause a few upsets and win some games that will build confidence heading into next year.

We played Traralgon last Saturday and again competed well against a high class combination. The game was in the balance until the dying minutes of the game. It was a good standard game. The game was also a major milestone for club stalwart David “ Chewy “ Olsen equalled the club record for games played with “Scooter” Bethune on 245 games played. David who played his first senior game in 2002 has been an amazing club person and is admired for his loyalty and consistency over a great career. He continues to play great football for our club. Against Leongatha today he will break the club record. Well done Chewy. The senior game result was a 13 point win to Traralgon with the scores tied several times during the game. Again we had our chances but were unable to sustain our intensity late in the game. This has happened several times this year. We know we can compete against the best teams in the competition but need to learn how to finish off. Best players were: assistant coach Eddie Morris (Barry Plant Award), Liam Anderson (Middels) , James Ferguson (Family Hotel ), Bob Mc Callum (Kim’s Kitchen ) and Joe Collins (Steam and Riddles). The Reserves faced a Traralgon team who had quite a few under 18 players into the side. Traralgon made a strong start and kicked the first 5 goals but after that it was a solid contest. Again we battled the game out in a good standard game with our boys fighting out the contest as always. Best players were: Will Bryce (Select Office ), Jayden Fairlie (Community Bank ) , Kurtis Harper ( Middels Award ) , Josh Seri (Drouin Gourmet Café ) and Ryan Taylor ( Family Hotel Award). Our under 16 side had a tough day against a high quality Traralgon squad. The Maroons were bigger and stronger and showed the class of a top team. Our young hawks were tough at the contest and fought the game out bravely. Best players were: Xavier LaFrantz (Select Office Award), Jahmain Harrison (Intersport) , Josh Maric (Intersport ) , Caleb Hermanson (Community Bank ), Dallon Jeffrey Molan (Community Bank) and Bailey Stephens ( Jakk’s Pizza). Our Club person of the week is a hardworking and loyal club man, Michael Derrick. Michael is a life member and a long serving person at our club. Michael is always happy to help in any way he can round the club. He is currently team manager for the reserves, helps behind the bar and helps significantly with club fundraising. We really appreciate and respect Michael’s contributions to our club. He wins the Drouin Family Hotel Club Person of the Week. We are looking forward today’s return game against Leongatha who are a league benchmark. MAJOR SPONSORS : DROUIN and DISTRICT COMMUNITY BANK and THE DROUIN FAMILY HOTEL

CLUB NOTES WARRAGUL Last round it was the battle of the birds and the Parrots flew away with a resounding victory against the hard working Gulls and retain the time honoured Hemming Trophy. We were slow off the mark and the visitors took full advantage with their run and spread game plan that worked a treat for them. The passion was there both on and off the field but the Leongatha side certainly put our finals aspirations on the back burner. We lost a couple of our play makers to injury/ unavailability and Nate Paredes was on the pine for the last term after some “close checking”. However, that takes nothing away from some quality footy by a superb opposition. Nick Stevenson is playing up the ground a bit now played a great game to take out the Warragul Downtowner best on award. James Davidson and Mitch Nobelius will be comparing the menus at the Railway and Frankies after their performances and Matt Rennie has been super all year courtesy of Intersports. Nate Paredes will enjoy his Maloneys Pizza after 3 brilliant quarters and Jake Hughes must have had plenty of visits to Voyage Fitness because he’s in top form.
but our lads will be better for the experience.
Our reserves can’t miss out on the finals but got the jitters in the last quarter after leading by a goal at the final change against a side they will meet in September. The Parrots wanted it a bit more than us to win by 21 points. Brad Nott was our best with Jake Orlicki grabbing 4 majors. Angus Emery is very consistent and he and Mick Lynn showed their senior experience. Micks’ car will sparkle after a visit to Waterwise Carwash. Will Cole was in everything and Scott Kelly was prominent again.
Jai Serong was awarded the Warraview Joinery best on with Cooper Alger off to Sharkeys for a trim. Matthew Boyles was in the awards again along with Beau Cusden who got the Voyage Fitness award and a ride in the ambulance. Damien Handley will dine at Maccas and Brendan Coates is the coaches favourite this week. Netball. Our netballers had some cause for celebration after good wins to our A, B and C grade sides. The A graders are out of the top five on percentage and are striving for that elusive finals birth. Anna Green and Renee Cook took out the top awards. B grade are in the five and C grade won by 4. Make sure you support these girls to the finish and hopefully we can cheer them on in the finals.
The under 18s chance of playing finals have probably gone after going down by a solitary point last week and with a difficult draw ahead. Some indifferent kicking in the third quarter cost our lads the game but it was a close encounter all the same. Our award winners were Ed McGillvray, Sam Fennell, Pat Mulqueen , Rhys Chambers and Cooper Robbins.
The Gulls are proud to announce the signings of Matt Rennie, Tom Muir, Nate Paredes and Brayden Fowler for the next football season and hopefully beyond. We are lucky to have young men of their calibre in our ranks and it sends a clear message of solidarity within our footy and netball club to anyone who wants to be part of the success of this family.
Our under 16s were up against a good Leongatha side who look hell bent on grabbing a finals berth. It was an all the way win by the youngest of the Parrots

Yes their fitness was an issue but their skills and contest kept the scores tight.
