ROUND 18 TRIPLE THREAT

Who will claim this year’s minor premiership? SATURDAY, 25 AUGUST 2018 Moe v Maffra Leongatha v Sale Warragul v Bairnsdale Drouin v Wonthaggi Traralgon v Morwell

Authorised by Darren Chester MP, National Party of Australia – Victoria,126 Franklin Street, Traralgon, Vic 3844. Printed by Adcell Group, 203 Malop Street, Geelong, Vic 3220.

ROUND 18 UPDATE For the second year running the minor premiership will be decided on the final home and away round of the season. This year it is a race in three between last years premiers Leongatha, Maffra and Sale with the sides all locked at 56 points. This weekend could provide a snap shot for the month to come with second place Leongatha playing third place Sale in what could be a preview of the qualifying final. Fourth place Moe can take the minor premiership off Maffra if they can manage the win at home. The Eagles are level on points with both Sale & Leongatha however sit a healthy percentage clear meaning a win would secure the week off. The battle for the final spot in this years finals series is also on as Traralgon and Warragul both sit level on 36 points with one game to play. Both sides will go in favorites in their final round clash with a pair of home matches against Morwell & Bairnsdale respectively. If the Maroon’s can have a solid win over there closest neighbour they will clinch fifth spot and a chance to take on Moe next weekend.

The netball still have the double chance up for grabs with Traralgon, Moe & Drouin all competing for the two spots in the qualifying final. Morwell has locked away the minor premiership sitting over two games clear on top. Traralgon is virtually assured a spot with their percentage being far superior to their rivals. Drouin are relying on Maffra to do them a favour and defeat Moe to give them the chance to move into the three. Warragul have secured finals action this year with their A Grade side sitting two games clear in fifth. A magnificent effort from the Gulls who have rebuilt their side over the past two seasons and will now get a chance to play in September. Be on the lookout early next week as the finals venues will be confirmed once the weekends results come in. Warragul and Morwell’s grounds are scheduled to host the first weekend of Finals however with the push rom the clubs to have neutral finals in the first two weekends the venues will be locked in after the final ladders come in.

AUGUST NOMINATION - Football Callan McKeon - Bairnsdale Lucknow Junior The final football nomination for the year, Bairnsdale’s Callan McKeon. McKeon made his senior debut in 2016 where he managed both 2 games in 2016 &2017. A smaller mid/forward type, McKeon has an appetite for the contest. In his first full season of senior football McKeon has featured in 15 matches so far kicking two goals. After transferring to Bairnsdale in 2014 he managed 26 fourths matches before featuring in Gippsland Power’s TAC Cup squad in 2016. In 2017 McKeon’s was restricted to just 10 games across his time at Power & Bairnsdale. This season he has been named in the Red Legs best seven times including a best performance in round 1 where he received the two votes in the MVP award and second best effort in round 13 against Moe.

AUGUST NOMINATION - Netball Alison Dwyer - Bairnsdale Lindenow Junior Another one of Bairnsdale’s young core of players that have impressed this season. Alison Dwyer has been a key to the Red Legs improvement this season. A young defender that has come into a side that won just one game in 2017 she has helped the team transform into a competitive unit that has managed to win 7 games already in 2018. Featuring in her first season in the TRFM Gippsland League, Dwyer has been a successful junior at Lindenow and was recruited to be a long term A Grade player for the Red Legs. She is still eligible for the 17 & Under competition however has played the entire season in A Grade featuring in all 17 games so far. Predominantly a Tall defender that has the ability to swing into goals. she has had many stand out games including the famous Traralgon round 10 match where Dwyer lead the charge as the 2017 wooden spooners defeated the 2017 premiers receiving two votes in the GCLC MVP Award. 5 YEARS AGO … 24TH AUGUST, 2013 One of the biggest thrashings by a top team over the second placed one took place when Sale romped to a 122 point victory over Morwell. Admittedly the Tigers had several top players on the sidelines, but the Magpies were awesome, kicking eighteen goals to two after quarter time. Shannon Lange topscored for Sale, with five goals, to be named their best afield. Maffra trailed Warragul all day before finally hitting the front in the final term, hanging on to win by nine points. Dan O’Brien was busy in the midfield for Maffra, while for Warragul Clinton Rowe played well all day and Brad Drew scored seven of the Gulls’ thirteen goals. Wonthaggi warmed up for the finals with a dominant win over Drouin, forward Adam Cook kicking six goals. Traralgon had a solid win over Leongatha as did Bairnsdale on their trip to Moe.

30 YEARS AGO … 20TH AUGUST, 1988 Morwell scored an important win over Sale in the final round of the home and away season, as they then met again the following week in the First Semi-Final. The Tigers got a two goal break at quarter time, then extended the margin over the next two quarters to lead by 42 points at the final break. Sale came home with six final quarter goals, but the game was already decided. Ashley Bond won in the ruck for Morwell, Ron Hughes solid in defence for Sale. Traralgon started slowly against Bairnsdale, but scored 23 goals to four after that to record a huge victory. Allan Jennings and Russell Northe starred for Traralgon. Maffra made sure of its double chance in its first finals series for nine years with a big home ground win against Warragul. Leading by thirty points at half time, the Eagles put the game out of reach with six unanswered goals in the third quarter. Coach Daryl Cunningham led from the front for Maffra. Glenn Thorson’s eight goals took his season’s total to 91 and allowed Leongatha to finish the season with a big win over TTU. Moe’s smaller brigade of Lachlan and Robert Sim, supported by Gary Jacobs, took the Lions to a comfortable win over Churchill.

Ladder : Traralgon 60, Maffra 56, Morwell 52, Sale 48, Leongatha 40, Warragul 36, Bairnsdale 36, Moe 24, Churchill 8, TTU 0.

Weather affected grounds caused some very low scores. At Warragul just five goals were scored. The Gulls led 3.1 to 0.3 at half time, but scored just four behinds in the entire second half, yet won against Traralgon whose two goals came in the final term. Graeme Cook and Rob Ballingall revelled in the heavy conditions to be named as Warragul’s best players. At Leongatha the home team got away quickly with four first quarter goals, but was held to just two more after that time. Moe drew the scores at 5.5.35 at three quarter time. David Heath and Roger McHardy worked hard in the difficult conditions to edge the Lions a point ahead at the final siren. The Yallourn/Yallourn North versus Maffra game was moved to the Yallourn No.2 oval where the firmer conditions allowed the Blues to kick the “sweep”. Neil Meredith and Neil Brennan won the on-ball battles for the Blues, the goalkicking honours shared. The final game was played at Sale in better conditions, Sale kicking away in the final term with five goals to one to win by 31 points. Peter Speed and John Henderson stood out for Sale with Shane Loveless the leading goalkicker with five. Morwell had the bye.

The Eagles have won the past 14 encounters, although there were a couple of close calls last year with a pair of three point wins in the Home and Away season. Both teams got back on the winners’ list last week, Moe’s percentage now assuring it of a finals place. If Moe is going to go any distance in the finals, however, they must show that they are able to match it with the top three and today’s game will give them a good guide of their chances.

Leongatha has won their past six matches against Sale, their best run against Sale since they strung eight wins together between

2003 and 2004. Sale’s last three visits to Parrot Park have seen them return home on the end of some heavy defeats, the margins being 76, 121 and 105 points. Spectators can be assured of a much, much closer game this afternoon, with a psychological advantage come finals time for the winner.

They came mighty close again last year when they kicked three goals to one in the final quarter, only to come up seven points short. The Gulls came so close against Sale last week, but now they must depend on Morwell defeating Traralgon, and themselves accounting for Bairnsdale, if their hopes are to be realised. The Redlegs certainly won’t make it easy for them, but you can bet Gulls’ fans will have an eye on the game and an ear out listening for news from Traralgon.

Both teams have had years where opportunities have slipped through their fingers at times, and the chance to exit the year on a winning note will give the victor some momentum to take into the off-season. Drouin’s win at Morwell last week was a sign of their improvement, and the Power also made finalist Moe earn the points the hard way.

Today’s match is of vital importance to Traralgon’s hopes of playing in this year’s finals series. It is a simple equation for them : win against Morwell as their ladder percentage advantage over Warragul makes it extremely difficult for the Gulls to make up the deficit. The Tigers have been undermanned in recent weeks, but should be back close to full strength for this game and won’t be doing their arch rival any favours. Traralgon will be favoured to win, but Morwell would like nothing better than to exit the season on a high note.

CLUB NOTES MOE It was a very chilly day out at Wonthaggi last Saturday, as our teams battled it out on the field and on the court. Across the board Moe were able to secure a number of important wins as we look ahead to the finals with much anticipation Football Seniors (from Ben Morrow) Managed to hit the post more times than we kicked goals for the game. In the first quarter we failed to convert kicking 2.8 with a strong wind. In the second we coughed up five goals in fifteen minutes and got completely outplayed to be down by twenty points. In the third we dominated the game but still couldn’t convert in front of goal kicking 4.9 then in the last, with pretty much no bench, we managed to hold on in a gutsy effort as we played like we finally realised our finals spot was on the line. Best players were James DeVirgilio, James Blaser, Jacob Wood, Joel Bragagnolo, Tom Long and Jibba Ainsworth. Reserves Swung the side around a bit to give players an opportunity in what turned into a get-out-of-jail win. To give an idea of how strong the wind was only two goals were kicked into it by both teams for the entire game. Having said that, the Reserves were happy to bank the four points with second spot and the double chance locked away. In what was pleasing to see, all players to feature in the best were players who had been omitted at some stage throughout the year, giving an indication of the strong attitude of the entire list to cop setbacks on the chin and apply themselves with the right attitude. Best players were Jay Murphy, Jimmy Columbine, Ryan Farmer, who makes the impossible look easy and vice versa, Sam Morrow and Robbie Matthews. Under 18’s From the outset Moe dominated proceedings in what was essentially a tune up before the finals. The side found solid contributions across the board and will look forward to the next horizon. Best players were Rylan Henkel, Josh Galea, Trent Baldi, Ben Maslen, Kane Weir and Riley Taws. Under 16’s Now have their destiny in their own hands after suffering defeat against a strong Wonthaggi team. Moe played well in patches but found the avenue to goal challenging as the Power ran away with the match in the end. The equation for Moe now is simple: win this week and a place in the finals awaits. Best players on the day were Matt Neal, Hayden Molesworth, Tajh Eden, Joe Skinner, Riley Moore and Blake Dyson. Netball (from Sharon Marie) A Grade A superb display of brilliance, with all players contributing to the win. Moe were able to exert their dominance on the game throughout the four quarters. They will be looking to keep the winning form going next week against Maffra knowing that Finals are just two weeks away.

MAJOR RAFFLE First prize $38K Audi! SEE A SENIOR FOOTBALL OR NETBALLER FOR A TICKET $50 a ticket, drawn after the last home game. 5 prizes up for grabs. Congratulations to Laini Galea who made her A Grade debut, at just fifteen years of age there is certainly a bright future ahead. Final scores were 64-35. B Grade Fair to say no one saw that one coming. After cruising for most of the year Moe came up against a rough and tough battle from Wonthaggi. With blustery icy winds along with pelting rain throughout the match it meant it was difficult for both teams to capitalise on each other’s mistakes. Although the ladder sees next week’s game against Maffra an expected win B Grade can't take their opponents for granted and must gain back that winning form. Better to drop one now than in the finals though. C Grade In a match where fourth placed Wonthaggi played fifth placed Moe, a topsy-turvey affair ensued with the lead changing multiple times from beginning to end but a few costly turnovers from Wonthaggi saw Moe hold on for a deserving win by two goals. This result should give the players a great deal of confidence as they will more than likely play Wonthaggi in the Elimination final. Under 17’s It was always going be a tight tussle with top of the ladder Wonthaggi, with lots of lead changes to both teams throughout the day it saw their counterparts take the honours on the day. Next week will see Moe take on Maffra which too should see another tight tussle, with both teams wanting a win for some much needed confidence going into the finals week. Under 15’s Winning the ball in defence and a total dominance in the ring, Moe were just too classy for their opponents. Next week will see fourth play fifth on the ladder with the winner to take a great deal of confidence into the finals. Under 13’s Went down but showed glimpses of a side that is on the improve, it's a shame they are coming to the end of the year. But there still one more game left and anything can happen in a game of netball.

CLUB NOTES MAFFRA Two Maffra Men achieving 200 games on the same day is momentous, and to complete the day with a double against Traralgon says wonders about our club. Jeremy Jones absolute commitment to The Eagles has seen him achieve that number in the Ressies, joining another Maffra stalwart Gary Cotterill who had made just one senior appearance in a worthy career. Jeremy's young family have spent their winters 'on holiday' at the footy enjoying their father's considerable commitment. The moment of the day, when the game was at its tightest, Kel Porter swooped on a loose ball, avoided a tackle and goaled. In the 200th game of his illustrious, respected, highly successful career his team swamped this truly brave example of a sportsman. When the team finally saluted, after a blistering last term, the entire crowd applauded his efforts over a long time. Kel You've done your family proud! Today's write up pays tribute to our junior teams, thanking every single player and parent for giving your all in face of being the smallest population in a competitive league . When Trent Knobel advised the Maroons we only had 14 players their managers gave us four of their most competent for the day. Their gesture cannot be understated. We thank these young men for their sportsmanship. An early soccer goal to Cal Henning gave us an impetus that grew into confidence as our captains Tom Thatcher, Declan Scriven and Mac Huts (see last Week) had stronger support. Nothing got through Lachie Hicks at CHB, providing a rebound force also. Our wins have all came with Sam Berry's availability, his 4 goals kept the pressure on. Our best team performance for the year where everyone could put their teachings into practice, their pressure led to a rare win. That moment came because of Traralgon's generosity. Trent had terrific support over the year from John Dewsbery, Matt Daly and Ian Thatcher, thanks to all for your time. The 3rds again needed those named above, but they were given to cramp in the 2nd half along with their tireless captain Josh Edey. This team's core is spread over the bottom age / top age and regularly topped up with U16s, they have been brave and conscientious in the face of frustration. Having great numbers on the senior list has not given those capable the opportunity to enjoy success. Our two first nation lads Tom and Rick both have our supporters gratitude. Their time here (certainly replicated elsewhere) gaining an education and attempting to attract AFL recognition must come at extraordinary cost to them and their family. They are beautiful young men, gracious, polite, humble and each exciting in their own way. Tom's football smarts and use of his body astounds opponents and supporters both, Rick's athleticism, grace and unselfishness deserved more games with the system that they have sacrificed themselves for. Another popular recruit Joe Ziino was our chief ball winner for the year, to see these young men in our Ressies is maybe a futile hope but, if possible, all Maffra people would grant them their most fervent dream. Thanks to Michael Coleman, Sam Bedggood and Darren Randle for their management of these young men. Our A grade finals hopes have been dashed, after losing the

26

penultimate game for the season to second-placed Traralgon. With bitter cold, horizontal rain and howling wind sweeping through play, visibility proved difficult, and shooting was near impossible through the wind. We led at quarter-time, and were still within reaching distance at half time, but it seems Traralgon needed half a game to defrost, and put their foot on the accelerator in the third. Centre Emma Allman controlled play beautifully in her two quarters on the court, and left big shoes for skipper Paige Biddle in the second half. Biddle stepped up and with wing attack Taylah Ballinger fed well despite plenty of Maroons’ pressure. In B grade, we’re still clinging to a top five spot, despite losing to the Maroons last weekend, and a win today against Moe would seal that. What a recruit we found in Bec Stobie, who certainly proved her worth on the court last weekend, and the welcome presence Alex Gallatly after a six week hiatus was also felt. Em Boyle was also phenomenal until a horrific fall cut her court time short – hope you’re all good for this week Em. Our C graders are likely to finish minor premiers, after a gripping win against second placed Traralgon. These girls have put on thrilling shows all year, and we expect today to be no different. Hannah Bourke stepped up capably from under 17s, while Maddie Ballinger moved the ball well through the midcourt. Come on girls, we’re all behind you! In juniors, our under 17s girls held on goal for goal until the final moments, when the Maroons dug deep to scoop the win by three. No matter, the girls are currently sitting pretty having secured a finals berth. Our under 13s and under 15s should also still be celebrating from their awesome wins, which respectively secured both sides spots in the finals! Well done girls! A huge effort from the Eagles gals this season, with four from six teams guaranteed finals spots, and finals hopes still alive and well in B grade, and our A grade just finishing shy in sixth place

CLUB NOTES LEONGATHA Club: Leongatha Football Netball Club After having the week off we made the longest trip for the year and headed to Bairnsdale to try our luck. Some really exciting news is that Bairnsdale have indicated to the league that they will be entering a side in the Reserves competition next year. We wish them all the best in this endeavour and feel that they are making a very positive move for themselves and the competition. Its fair to say conditions were a little on the chilly side and it did make things a bit of a struggle across the board. The U16s needed a win to give them a chance to make the finals and early on it didn't look good. The opposition got away to a quick start and our lads were playing catch up all day. It was great that they never gave up and they did come home with a wet sail to make Bairnsdale earn the victory. The U18s had the luxury of knowing they were going to play finals regardless of the result. Maybe that had a little to do with their slow start. Unfortunately they were never able to get their game up and going. Cam Olden played a lone hand up forward and this pundit believes he could be a sneaky chance for a league B&F. Let’s hope the lads can get a few back from injury and get things up and going as they head into the finals. The senior side really came to play last weekend. They were on song early and never let up. With Cade Maskell booting 9 majors Bairnsdale had no answers. In what really was a team effort heading towards finals our coaching staff will be looking forward to the challenge of Sale at home today. Over on the netball courts conditions deteriorated so badly, at one stage the A grade game had to be halted for safety. The match was hard fought and our girls were in it until the final minute. Going down by 4 in the end. The B grade girls worked hard and got up in a tough match. They have tried so very hard this season and it was great for them to get the win in a close one. The C graders struggled to get into the match at any stage and went down by a big margin. In the juniors the U17s kept their slim finals hopes alive with a well compiled win. They teamed better late in the

game, remaining cool under pressure. The 15s drew their game, confirming that they will miss the finals, a poor result for this team as the talent in undoubtedly there. The U13 girls had another strong win, sealing their top 3 aspirations. With a last round match up against Sale who have dominated the comp in the last few years our girls will have a very good idea of where they sit in the big scheme of things coming into finals. SALE FO

With the Final round on the cards and a nice scenic drive to Leongatha, The Magpie faithful are ready to finish off strong for the year. This season has been a huge year for the magpies and we have achieved so much on and off the field. We are so proud of our 2018 season and we would like to thank our supporters for cheering us on come rain or shine, our amazing sponsors, our volunteers and committee members, we appreciate all of you for your commitment to our club. We would also like to thank our President and his family, Trevor, Lee, Ben, & Jazz. On behalf of the SFNC we would like to thank you for your huge efforts, achievements and commitment to our club this season. Just like the Tornado that took away little Toto and Dorothy, our senior boys were getting swept over to the far wing all game. The conditions were tough and made even worse with Sale losing two young guns in Jack ‘Big Dog’ McLinden and Max ‘Noisy’ Reeves. The game was tight with Sale missing opportunities in front of goal and another injury by 3/4 time seen Sale down to one on the bench. Jayden Allison was again our Best on and shown class right to the final siren. Having 5 time Fyfe’s 250th as some extra inspiration, all the boys pulled together to hold on and defeat Warragul 8.13-61 to 8.3-51. Best- Kano Martin, Jumbotron Dessent, Jack ‘100+ club’ Lipman, Brad ‘Guns’ McKay and Andy ‘Confidence’ Quirk. The Magoo’s couldn’t pull an amazing fourth win ion a row and after a great start, they couldn’t hold off a strong Gulls outfit. Sale lost 5.3-33 to 9.11-65. Best- B. Jones, T.Dessent, Daine ‘Naptime’ McGuiness, Coach Anstee and T.Hector. Both our Junior teams shown they are going to be a force come post home and away season. The boys continue to improve each week and it shows on the field.

CLUB NOTES WARRAGUL In the penultimate round of the 2018 season we took the trek to Sale to take on the third placed Pies to keep our finals aspirations alive. The weather gods weren’t kind to the Gippy region and the wind would have blown the head off your beer. But it was the same for both sides so a close contest was on offer and the Gulls were coming off a nice win last start. Tight finishes around finals time with a fairy tale ending are what we all like but it will depend on this week and another result at Traralgon to learn our fate. There was nothing in it at the first three changes and it was a tough encounter between two sides desperate for an edge. Was it a great standard? Probably not, but if you like enthralling and tough in the trenches footy then you would have been thrilled. For the Gulls, it was an opportunity missed but you couldn’t help be proud of the way these lads from both sides took on every challenge. It was Sales day but Nate Paredes ( Downtowner ), Kim Drew ( Intersports ), James Davidson ( Railway Hotel ), Sam Russell ( Frankies ), Jake Hughes ( Maloneys Pizza ) and Luke Di Ciero ( Voyage Fitness ) fought strongly to get the Warragul side home and in fairness the awards could have been spread far wider than those. Our reserves have a rest this week but had a good hit out at Sale and certainly had to work hard for the points early on. The home side had our measure in the first half but the Gulls rallied after the main break outscoring the Pies easily and getting a good solid win. The Lawson – Pepper brothers had good games as did Wil Cole, Sam Whibley, Jake Orlicki with 3 majors and Harley Nobelius. The thirds had their opportunities against the slick Sale outfit and it was a good contest for three quarters even though the Pies held sway. They ran out the game better than our lads but we had some excellent contributors on the day. Rhys Chambers took out the Warraview Joinery award from Thomas Baum with Marcus Pintaudi playing well. Lachie Wilson and Cooper Robbins are off to Frankies after their fine efforts and Liam Giliam will enjoy his trim at Sharkeys Uppercuts after his 3 goals.

Our A grade netballers have earnt a finals spot after a great win over the Sale ladies in a fine team performance. Our other grades were competitive in their matches as well and will be keen to notch up some wins this week.

Well done tour entire netball squad and their coaches on a super year.

This week we welcome the Redlegs for the final round of the home and away season and will be cheering all grades on to finish the year on a high note.

Skidda may be coaching his final game this week if we miss finals but his legacy has set the platform for whoever is lucky enough to take the reins as senior coach. His friendship, guidance and example have set the standard for the entire group to aspire to and he and his family will always be welcome back here. To the coaches of all grades of footy and netball we say thank you for the sacrifices you have made for us.

The under 16s came up against a very good Sale side who got away to a flying start. It was one way traffic for the four quarters despite our lads trying their very best. Connor Ives has been a good player all season and

had another solid game. Jai Serong was another good performer along with Matthew Pecoraro , Cooper Alger , Damien Handley and Charlie Stern.

Chris Blackwood is in his final year as President and the club is in a better place than you found it thanks to your leadership and hard work. The committee and volunteers, the wonderful sponsors, the players and parents have shared some wonderful moments this year so well done to you all and GO GULLS.

CLUB NOTES BAIRNSDALE Time flies when you are having fun, can you believe it’s the last home and away round of the 2018 season! Last Saturday was a successful day overall. We had some typical winter weather, Rain, Wind, Hail, Sunshine, Rain and more Wind. Again our amazing bank of volunteers pulled together from 7.00am – 7.00pm to ensure both home and away teams could have a great day on the court and the field. While the weather was challenging it certainly didn’t affect the quality of the football. The Under 16’s started their match strongly, making the most of their scoring opportunities and defending well against the win, at the 3 quarter mark the Redleg boys had the upper hand but the Parrots really come home hard, in the end the boys were able to finish with a couple of goals win. The under 18’s were in much better form than the last time these two sides met, from the start to the finish the boys played as a well drilled unit, their skill and execution created many opportunities for their forwards to score, while the boys were a little inaccurate at times they still managed to kick a solid winning score. From playing a really confident match against Sale one week then a lack luster performance last week against the Parrots it goes to show at this level you can’t afford to drop your guard. The Parrots were way too dominant through the middle field putting a lot of pressure on the back line, with a lot of shots on goal the Parrots kicked a large winning score, our senior boys were disappointed but took from the game what they needed to be better for it next time. Netballers were pleased for the C grade side and their coach Lindy Bills, who had their first win in 2 seasons. It was a one sided affair against the Parrots, shooters were on, defenders were rebounding and the mid court delivered. While the

34

weather conditions were typical for winter during A grade, causing a pause in the game with torrential rain in the third term, the girls pulled off another win – Isla Pearson best on court. Leongatha were too strong for the 13 & U girls, 17 & U showed a positive performance across the board only going down by 8 goals and the 15 & U game had a levelled score. Well done to Jasmine Kazakas who stepped up into B grade, although the girls went down by 5, they fought hard in the final quarter to outscore the parrots, Vicky Stuckey best on court. Goodluck to the teams today in Warragul with potential for success. A big shout out to The Bairnsdale Club and The Grand Terminus for having us last Saturday night, we had a great crowd enjoy getting around town supporting some fantastic sponsors. The progressive Dinner was a hit, next year it will be on again with some added twists so keep your eye out for next year’s social calendar. Harry Preston took out the Gate Raffle last week, maybe shout your mum and dad a nice dinner Harry! Today we have approximately 50 volunteers who are helping make game day happen. The support from our club Woman & Men is the main ingredient for a successful day, thank you! Challenge Yourself!

We travelled to Morwell to play the Tigers last round and had a strong win in very wintry and windy conditions. The game was in the balance at quarter time but we dominated from then on and had a 49 point win. This result shows we can put wins together when we play our best football. We celebrated another game milestone with David “ Reggie “ Miller playing his 100th club game. Congratulations to “ Reggie“ on achieving this significant milestone. It was great to have a good win for Reggie’s milestone game. The senior game result of a 49 point win over the Tigers was because we took our chances and were able to sustain our intensity throughout the game. We want to finish with three wins in a row with another win this week. Josh Seri lived up to his potential with 5 classy goals. Best players were: Josh Seri (Barry Plant Award), coach Jordan Kingi (Middels) , Eddie Morris (Family Hotel ), Bob McCallum (Kim’s Kitchen ) and Jeb McLeod (Steam and Riddles). The Reserves faced a competitive Morwell team who were able to take an early lead. We were not able to bridge the gap and worked hard in very difficult conditions. Again we battled the game out but were not able to get the win. Best players were: Simon Gardiner (Select Office ), Will Bryce (Community Bank ) , Matt Ridley ( Middels Award ) , Luke Ferguson (Drouin Gourmet Café ) and Austin Haymes ( Family Hotel Award). Our under 16 side started slowly against second placed Tigers who kicked the first 5 goals but our young Hawks fought back well to be only two goals down at three quarter time. It was a high standard game and we were very competitive against a quality team. As usual our young hawks were tough at the contest and fought the game out bravely. The improvement of so many players is showing through in the last couple of games. Best players were: Jahmain Harrison (Select Office Award), Cody Fleming (Intersport) , Trent Kearney (Intersport ) , Josh Maric (Community Bank ), Jack Fraser (Community Bank) and Xavier Lafrantz ( Jakk’s Pizza). Our Club person of the week is another hardworking and long term club supporter, Leanne Bateson. Leanne helps out in many ways including time keeping, interchange coordinator and with Thursday night meals. Leanne is always happy to help in any way she can round the club. We really appreciate Leanne’s contributions to our club. She is our Drouin Family Hotel Club Person of the Week. We are looking forward today’s return game against Wonthaggi today and hope we can finish the season with another win. CLUB NOTES WONTHAGGI What was expected to be a wet and wild day, just proved to be a bit windy. U16’s This was the last true test of our boys until finals start. Moe proved to be competitive for most of the game, but couldn’t score. Welcome back to big Dean, and the remaining injured boys should be ok for the Drouin game. Our junior injuries have been managed well. U18’s With Moe sitting in the top four, we always knew the game would be a hard one. Just like every week previous, the lads played out the game in good spirit. The end of the year has come for these lads now, look out Reserves, your position isn’t safe this week. Reserves, With the wind now starting to howl, the game became a very tight affair. At the last break, the visitors would have thought they were far enough in front. But they didn’t bank on Wonthaggi firing up. The expressions on the away team at games end was priceless. They knew they had dodged a bullet. Seniors, This was an interesting game to watch, the spectators regularly broke into a roar, either for us getting a goal, or Moe missing one. Or 26. The game was played in good spirit. Good luck to Moe for the finals. A Grade, Although it wasn’t the result we were after, the girls really took it up to the 3rd placed Moe in the 1st quarter. Positives to come out of the game was the that we now were converting on our turnovers. Was

38

pleased to see Sophie take to the court in her first game in A Grade. Well done Sophie. Let’s continue to support the other team’s leading into the finals and it would be awesome to cause an upset in the last round. B Grade, Under wet and slippery conditions the girls adapted as best they could. Coming away with a win against the second top team. Great effort by all the girls. Lots of milestones today in the senior ranks 100 senior games for Zoe Lowe, Lani Birkett, Nikki Cengia, Courtney Brann and Alyce Wylie. With Jo Duscher doing 150 games. Remarkable achievement girls. C Grade, Unfortunately we didn’t come away with a win today with our decition making letting us down, however we did have some great plays just not enough. Well done to Zoe and Lani on those 100 games. U15’s Our girls showed strength and versatility against Moe. The determination of each player was not reflected in the end result. Great effort girls. GO POWER, You Bloody Bewdy.

Football Wrap: Round 17 took us our to Maffra for a clash with the ladder leaders in the seniors. With difficult conditions our boys knew they were going to have to be at their best to come away with a win. After a solid performance the week before against Moe, inconsistency once again took us down against Maffra and the top side showed whey they are the premiership favourite, winning by 88 points. Our better players on the day were: H. Hector, C. Little, A. Jaensch, K. Wilson, T. Northe, J. McMahon The reserves also took on the ladder leaders and although massively undermanned, played their hearts out and made it a tough contest. With a total of 9 fill ins which included some under 18’s, one under 16 player in Chance Doultree and our thirds coach, this group took it right up to a side that is undefeated. With only 7 points the difference at the last break, Maffra ran the game out with our young group running out of legs to lose by 34 points. Best players in a terrific contest were R. Wilkie, J. Barnes, D. Barnes, R. Battista, C. Doultree, R. Loprese Our thirds continued their very good season so far, but they understand there is plenty of work still to be done. Although this never reached any great heights, the lads got the job done. Maybe the majority of the team was thinking more about doubling up for the reserves than the job at hand but they still won by over 10 goals securing top spot and a week off in the first week of the finals. Best players were L. Tripodi, B. Cheetham, E. Williams, K. Marsh, L. Willaton, C. Ruyters In the fourths, Maffra didn’t have enough players to get a team together so with the result of this game not having any effect on ladder positions and with neither side able to make finals, we leant them 4 of our best players which would test our younger guys. This it did because Maffra ended up winning. Both sides had the same amount of scoring shots, but Maffra were more accurate on the day. Big thanks to the boys that helped Maffra out. Best players were M. Scholtes, H. Middleton, A. Foley, H. Dunbar, R. Adams, C. Frith This week we have our last home game against Morwell, one that the seniors and reserves really need to win. The thirds are safe in top spot and the fourths will be pushing for a win against a Morwell side full of Traralgon kids. Although the fourths will not play finals, this group has improved from season start and will be a force next season with the majority being bottom age this year. Let’s see if we can finish on a real high with four home wins. Traralgon FNC would like to give a big shout out to all the trainers from all clubs and especially our crew that support the footballers and netballers every week. The professional care the players receive cannot be overstated so thank you all for the work you do.

THE MAROONS Netball Wrap: C Grade had the most important match of the weekend, going up against equal top spot Maffra. We had the lead and the momentum late in the third quarter before play was stopped for a serious Maffra injury. Unfortunately, when play resumed everything seemed to swing Maffra’s way and they overran us by 2 goals. The U17s and U13s had finals preview games as they are both likely to play Maffra in their first week of finals. U17s just managed a narrow win and the U13s went down by only 5 goals - giving both sides lots to work on in the next two weeks. Jnr “Coaches” Awards: U13 – Amali Adams, Faith Farmer & Emily Neocleous, U15 – Alanna Webster, Molly Van Berkel & Alyssa Tangi, U17 – Amy Husson, Saskia Eenjes & Lori Scholtes. Snr Awards: C Grade – Sophie Membrey, Loren Ponton & Tiffany Boatman, B Grade – Alyce Murphy, Kristy Jennings & Bec Duddington, A Grade – Stacey O’Brien, Bec Jennings & Caitlan Ponton. Congratulations to Amy Husson who will play her 100th junior game this week against Morwell. It is a credit to the club that 3 juniors have reached their 100 game milestone this year. Once again, thank you to all our wonderful volunteers and sponsors that help us out each season. The future of our club looks very bright with our juniors coming through so if there are any sponsors, supporters or volunteers that would like to be involved in one of the most successful clubs in country Victoria next season, please just flick us an email to tfnc@bigpond.com Good luck to all participants taking part today. Go Maroons.

CLUB NOTES MORWELL In Round 17 at Morwell we hosted Drouin in our last home game of the season. In the netball we expected strong opposition from the talented Drouin squad and so it proved with the ‘A’ and ‘B’ Grade sides both suffering narrow losses. The U17 and the U13 sides were our only two winning netball sides for the day. This week against Traralgon will provide a great challenge in all grades. The ‘A’ Grade game will be worth the entry price. Best on court in all grades last week were: ‘A’ Grade Claire Allison & Courtney Garth ‘B’ Grade Emily Donoghue & Maddi Hutchison, ‘C’ Rose Van Rooy & Libby Hodgson, U17’s Chloe Radford, Maddi Macfarlane & Isla McCrae U15’s Macie Leslie, Abbie Tripp & Emma Spagnolo. U13’s Indiana Thomas, Madison Beveridge & Taylah Pavey. FOOTBALL – Drouin proved too strong for our senior side last week and reversed the mid-season result. Our second’s side played well and enjoyed a 15-point victory. Our thirds had a rest given Drouin have no thirds and the fourths won well and will now finish top 4. Best last week were Seniors: Tayler Weatherill & Tank Rosato, 2nds: Nathan Foley, Corey White & Mitch Marino. 4ths: Callum Hutchison, Tom Caile & Brody Deering THANKS COACH – Today Joel Soutar will coach our Senior Footy side for the last time. Joel has stood-down to concentrate on his young family. We wish to sincerely thank Joel who stepped into the role mid-season 2015 to help the club. Joel has done a great job in mentoring a young playing group. Thank you Joel for your dedication to MFNC. SOCIAL – After today’s game it is back to the club
