Selkirk Roosters WIN VFL Grand Final 3-Peat... The North Ballarat Roosters defeated Northern Bullants to create a dynasty and win a third consecutive VFL premiership at Etihad Stadium. Looking to get off to a flyer, the Roosters booted six goals to one in a very strong opening quarter performance. The Roosters midfield was outstanding as they moved the ball down field quickly and it was their pressure that made the Bullants make several costly turnovers. North Balllarat led by 44 points at quarter time. North Ballarat continued with its trademark brand of aggression and high skill level and although both sides kicked four goals, it was the Roosters who remained on top. The Bullants showed some slight improvement but they continued to again make school boy-like errors and the Roosters led by 36 points at the main break. The Bullants staged a comeback as they kicked three goals to ignite a slim hope of victory and keep themselves in a game that was slipping away. North Ballarat kicked four goals to Northern’s five but was still ahead on the scoreboard with a 28-point buffer at the final break. It was a final quarter fizzer after the Bullants third-quarter comeback and they were unable to continue playing good football, buckling under the pressure applied by North Ballarat’s speedy midfield. The Roosters twin forward towers in North Melbourne-listed David Hale and Josh Smith proved to be the difference, Northern’s usuallystrong back six, led by Carlton-listed Bret Thornton, was unable to contain them. Roosters coach Gerard Fitzgerald was pleased with his team’s outstanding use of the ball and defensive pressure. “I thought we were efficient, there were times when we got the ball forward and looked like we were going to score,” he said. “I still thought our trademark defensiveness was good, we beat

a very good side today.” Fitzgerald was pleased to have created some history after being in awe of Sandringam’s three consecutive flags from 2004-6. “Sandringham were the empire of the most recent decade and I sat back there just admitted greatly how they were able to build a dynasty,” he said. “I hope my footy club can be compared to those dynasties, that would give us all great pleasure in Ballarat.” Josh Smith, Corey Jones and David Hale all chimed in with three goals to top the goal kickers list for the Roosters. Myles Sewell was awarded the Norm Goss medal for his superb performance in the midfield. AFL recruiters should hopefully show some interest after two excellent seasons with North Ballarat. Brad Fisher played a lone hand up forward for the Bullants with four goals and skipper Adam Icaobucci for his good game in the midfield, he continued to work hard despite the Roosters’ relentless pressure.

Chairman to step down... Announcement by our Chairman: Chairman to Step Down Peter Wilson our long standing Chairman has given notice of his intention to step down from his role as from the Annual General Meeting. Peter has been chairman since 1998 and has decided that it’s time to take a step back. Happily Peter has indicated that he will still be around in an active capacity to continue his support and interest in the club and to provide continued guidance. Peter indicated that he has enjoyed enormously the role and values the trust that the members have given him in undertaking the chairman’s role for such a long period “I have been honoured to be entrusted with the role and privileged to have served the club throughout most of the period of our involvement in the VFL, I can look back with satisfaction on the many highlights and successes that the club has enjoyed over that period”. The board has resolved to appoint Deputy Chairman John McClure to fill the position for the remainder of Peter’s original term which expires at the end of 2011. Peter indicated that John has been on the board for some years will be an admirable choice and will continue to provide strong leadership and enthusiasm in the role.

Head Coach Report Note of Thanks In late 1997 Allan Abrams (retiring club President) passed the baton to Peter Wilson. Allan had successfully managed the clubs’ transition from the Ballarat Football League to the Victorian Football League. Allan is to be congratulated for his wisdom and vision in recommending a person of Peter’s quality. A great decision was made that had a significant impact on the club’s journey. Peter has provided outstanding governance and leadership since 1998. He is a highly respected person in the community of Ballarat and in the AFL Victoria fraternity. Peter has set a very high standard as Chairman and so much of our success in recent years is attributed to Peters’ vision, leadership and wisdom. As a mentor and friend I thank him for his support. Generally, I would take the opportunity to thank and acknowledge the support of the Board of Directors, the full time staff (especially Mark Patterson, Marg Richards and Heath Wallace) the coaching group, support staff and volunteers. One of my great delights in my role as Head Coach is working with people of the highest calibre who genuinely know their role, play their role and take responsibility for their role. Well done and thanks. Club Model Many thanks to all concerned who have helped the club develop a fantastic model that has been successful, is sustainable and can be further developed. In 2010 from our list of 50 players 7 things are worth noting: 1. 58% (29 players) are undertaking study • 22 at the University of Ballarat 2. 3 are University of Ballarat graduates 3. 14 are either doing an apprenticeship or are now fully trade qualified 4. 68% (34) are ex TAC Cup – including 46% (23) from the North Ballarat Rebels 5. 27 have relocated to Ballarat 6. 4 are undertaking a “GAP” year 7. The average age is 21 years, 4 months Moreover, the successful premiership team of 2010 consisted of 1. 15 ex TAC Cup players 2. 5 local football club players • (3 from Redan FC, 21 from North City football club, 1 from Lake Wendouree football club) 3. 2 from interstate

We proudly (and successfully) follow a Leading Teams model at our club and I greatly appreciate Roy McLean’s contribution to our club’s culture and John McClure for his role as co-ordinator of the leadership group. Season 2010-11-05 In 21 games we won 18 and lost 3 (by a margin of 32 points in total). We were the best defensive team in the competition (VFL) and our premiership success was again built on our defensive platform. (Overall we were rated the 6th best team offensively, although in the finals we were well above average offensively). Regarding our KPI processes we were successful in 1. amount of ball won 2. efficiency of ball use 3. ball movement from stoppages 4. points for and points against 5. effort (one percenters) especially tackling 6. discipline free kicks for compared with free kicks against In the grand final we were successful in all of our KPI except 2. A very strong endorsement of our KPI process system. Congratulations to the playing group of 2010. Despite the departure of 10 premiership players from 2009, the team played with enormous self belief, the group set high standards and expectations and were keen to build on and enhance the culture from previous successful years. In the grand final, three of our best six players did not play in the premiership team in 2009. The group of 2011 needs to be inspired by the example of those three, namely Derick Micallef, Nick Peters and Cam Richardson. Conclusion In closing, on premiership in 2010 placed on club alongside 3 other VFA/VFL teams who had won three successive premierships – Sandringham, Port Melbourne and Williamstown. Importantly, we now have the opportunity to achieve HISTORY, no VFA/VFL club has one 4 successive premierships. In order to be successful we must all remind ourselves of the importance of “knowing your role, playing your role and taking responsibility for your role, to be the best of your ability”. See you in 2011 !

If you have assisted the Club in creating this outstanding model (which is unique to our club) we thank you. We are all very proud of our player development model at our club. Club Culture Congratulations to our leadership group of 2010 and thanks for your outstanding contribution to the Club’s successful culture. At the conclusion of the pre season the playing group voted for the players who best “behaved and actioned” the values and principles of the playing group these players were Shaune Moloney, Marc Greig, Dan Feery, Orren Stephenson, Myles Sewell, Matt Sharkey and Steve Clifton.

UB a Leader in Sports Research... The University of Ballarat’s School of Human Movement and Sport Sciences (HMSS) conducts intensive research into sports performance, injury prevention, health promotion and educational practice. Some of this is particularly relevant to footy players. Some examples of research questions in injury prevention are: • How are ground conditions associated with injuries in Australian Rules football? • What is the association between training workloads and fitness with injuries in AFL players? • What is the association between workloads in elite junior footballers and injuries early in an AFL playing career? Some examples of projects relating to sports performance are: • How can small-sided games be designed to provide a training stimulus for the development of agility in AFL players? • What is the best way to train football umpires to improve decision-making? • Can Global Positional System (GPS) tracking be used to predict muscle damage from games in elite junior footballers? • How do various fitness components contribute to performance in distance running and endurance cycling? • What is the best way to assess maximum oxygen uptake in runners with both laboratory and field tests? • What factors explain choking in sport and how can athletes reduce their susceptibility to choking? • What is the best way to develop multidirectional movement speed in tennis? • What is the best protocol for using heavy weights to enhance power output in strength training for sport? • How can isometric contractions be used in a warm-up to enhance performance of elite rowers? • What are the effects of plyometric training on wooden and sand surfaces for elite beach volleyball players? • Can accelerometers be used to quantify game workloads in netball? Much of this research is conducted for students who are working to achieve an Honours, Masters, Masters in Exercise Rehabilitation or PhD awards at the Mt Helen Campus.

Club Overview We are strong believers that we have a responsibility and, indeed a duty, to our community. The Year That Was Who would have thought? Our third successive VFL flag, our third Liston Medallist, Coach of the Year (again) etc. etc. As many have reflected, it is hard to believe! These team and individual successes underline that our club has, over generations, put down solid foundations on which success both on and off field can be achieved. It is trite to say that success doesn’t just happen. Occasionally one can get lucky, but sustained success is built upon the development and adherence to our core philosophies and values. Striving for excellence in all that we do. Honouring and being respectful to our history. Maturing of Support We are strong believers that we have a responsibility and, indeed a duty, to our community. We have a responsibility to the competitions in which we participate. We have responsibilities and obligations to our members, sponsors, partners and supporters. As a club we have had to earn our respected position in the football world from our very

6

early days. We believe that the support for our club has matured in recent years. No longer is there merely a sense of acceptance but now a real sense of being respected and embraced. We are a very important institution in our city and region. The respect that we are paid by the City of Ballarat, the University of Ballarat, the Selkirk Group of Companies, the North Melbourne Football Club, and so on, is a testimony to what we have sought to do and what we have achieved as a club. These factors are critical to what then translates into both on and off field success. Achievements Elsewhere in this report is a record of team and individual success. We emphasise our third flag since joining the VFL in 1996. Our third Liston Medallist in Steve Clifton. Our state representatives including our coach. Our team of the year representatives and, as we go to print, the drafting of Cameron Richardson who epitomises the “One Club” philosophy that we embrace. North Ballarat Rebels played finals football and saw the emergence of a talented group

www.theroosters.com.au

that will doubtless be drafted, some already taken as priority draftees to Greater West Sydney. We give thanks to Glen Wilkins who has retired from the coaching position and welcome his successor David Loader. With the North Juniors and North City we similarly thank Simon Paine for his time as coach and welcome Robbie Waters the new coach of North Ballarat City. We also record the ongoing success of our junior programmes, and the continued improvement of North Ballarat City. Spider Shaune Maloney deserves a special place in the history of our club. Spider’s playing record is outstanding but of greater importance is the man himself and the contribution he has made to the fabric of our club. He is an outstanding young man enjoying success not only in his football but in his teaching career. He has been the spirit and conscience of our playing group and that influence has extended to the broader club. People of his quality do not come along all that frequently and we are fortunate that during our period in history he did. Infrastructure Development 2010 saw us back on Eureka Stadium following its rebuild. We were also back on the refurbished “Number 2 oval”. Thanks to the Federal and State governments for their funding, also to the City of Ballarat for its funding and support, and also to the AFL. We also saw the construction of the new netball court and again thank the Federal government and the City Council for that development. We are also to be the beneficiaries of a million dollar grant from the State Government which will see further infrastructure development at Eureka Stadium which will enhance our football facilities, not only for our own use, but for the broader football community and, hopefully, for AFL pre season games. We are committed to continuous development at Eureka Stadium.

There is much still to be done to ensure that we achieve our strategic objectives whilst of course there remains the challenges to manage our club finances in the interests of the club and its members. Thanks What is perhaps not fully appreciated is the significant numbers of people involved in our club. Literally hundreds of people, most of them volunteers, devote their time and energy to all parts of our club. Whether that be at AusKick, Juniors, Ballarat League, Rebels, Roosters, Women’s Football, Disabled Football, Netball. The list goes on. We could not operate without all of those people. On behalf of the club we acknowledge and thank you for that support. We are also very well served by our paid staff. Whether they be full time, part time or sessional, in both Sports club and Football club we have a highly professional and committed staff. Finally, to those involved in the governance of our club, our boards and committees, our grateful thanks for your contributions.

P R Wilson Chairman

Mark Patterson Chief Executive Officer

Gaming Last year we had taken up pre auction entitlements and we are now able to report our success in the auction process. Thanks must go particularly to Marius Van Gerrevink and Tim Bodey who worked hard, and continue to do so, in the business operations of our club. Strategic Directions During the later part of the year the club went through an extensive reconsideration of our strategic intent. We have a revised vision that sees us aspiring to be “The premier community club.” Our mission, to create an environment of excellence and our value system says that we value our people, our members and our community and we do that by being inclusive, working as a team, showing leadership and innovation, acknowledging our traditions and behaving with respect, integrity and professionally. Governance We also aspire in the future to continue down the path of remerging our football clubs and sports club into one corporate entity. We have now developed a strong governance model with improved lines of communication and accountability across the club as a whole.

Rebels’ Report As the 2010 season has drawn to a close, when reflecting back on the year, it has been very successful for a number of reasons. This year, 42 out of 45 players represented The North Ballarat Rebels at TAC level, 10 players were selected to participate at the U18 National Championships, 6 players represented the North Ballarat Roosters as part of the VFL 23rd player rule, 2 of our players (Lucas Cook and Ben Mabon) were invited to the Draft Combine held in Canberra at the end of September, where they both performed extremely well under the watchful eyes of AFL recruiters and key personnel. In addition to this, a further 3 boys were invited to the State Combine (Richard Bamblett, Tom McDonald and Marcus Darmody) where they too, acquitted themselves superbly. To cap it off, the team managed to win its first final against the Murray Bushrangers where we won convincingly by 100 points. It was fantastic to watch the boys play an exciting brand of football over four quarters which further highlighted the capabilities of the playing group. So when you reflect on the past season, it has been quite a successful campaign. Due to restructuring of the Head Coach position and not being able to commit the time necessary to do the job justice, I decided to stand down as the coach after 2 years in the job. During this time, it has been a privilege to coach all of the players from across the four regions, as they have been very keen and enthusiastic to learn and develop their football talents. They have been keen to absorb as much information/feedback as they could, in order to make them better players and people. Before signing off for good, there are so many people I would like to thank who volunteer their services to the program and have been instrumental over the past two years. Firstly, the coaching group of David Loader, Ivan Pkye, Justin McGrath, Damian Ross and Jason Muldoon have assisted me greatly throughout the year, whether at training or on game day. Their knowledge and expertise has been invaluable. The work that Jock Whiting, Geoff Burdett and Alan Thompson do in the regions outside Ballarat is fantastic, particularly when driving the boys to and from training (4 hour round trip) each Thursday. A special mention must go to ‘Moose’ for his involvement with the Warrnambool boys each week. In addition, congratulations must go to Wayne Aitkin and Jeremy Mitchem, our Development Coaches in the South-West and Warrnambool regions, for their tireless work throughout the year, as well as Tim Shearer for his contribution with development in the Ballarat region. Our Strength and Conditioning coaches, Tom Carlon, Cam Burnside and Michael Davies have done a sterling job this year managing and designing our fitness and rehab programs for the players. Their personalities, expertise and approachable nature have contributed to our program enormously. The fitness programs they established at the beginning of pre-season held us in good stead, as this was reflected in our testing results prior to the season. Also, post season, all of our draft camp and state screening participants tested extremely well and this further highlights the terrific work that they did.

10

To the medical staff headed by Peter Henderson, Bernie Fensling and all the training staff, I thankyou for your expertise, support and involvement in the 2010 Rebels Program. All of the match day volunteer staff have been absolutely sensational and their unselfishness enables the Rebels Program to be the best in the TAC competition. Your professionalism and involvement enabled me to just coach, as I didn’t have to worry about other things. Without your assistance, the program wouldn’t function as smoothly as it does. To the 25 top age players who are leaving our program, I thank you for your involvement and commitment that you have demonstrated, whether it was for 1, 2 or 3 years. I hope that you achieved what you set out to do with your footy, and that you can look back on this experience with fond memories and implement some of the lessons learnt along the way. I would like to recognise the efforts of all of the parents of our players. We quite often talk about the dedication, discipline and commitment required by the players to succeed in their football, however the same must be said about the parents. I would like to congratulate the North Ballarat Football Club, from the Chairman Peter Wilson, CEO Mark Patterson, Head Coach Gerard FitzGerald, coaching and playing group, right down to all the volunteers for all of their hard work they provided in order to achieve back to back to back premierships. Fitzy, your support and mentoring over the past couple of years has been much appreciated and you deserve all the success you get. Finally to Phil Partington, thanks for the past two years and good luck with the program for 2011 and beyond, and I would like to personally wish David Loader and his support staff all the very best as they gear up for another season. Once again thanks for your support.

NBJFC Report The 2010 season saw many improvements across the club which place us in a good position going into the future. Eureka Stadium was revamped which gave North Ballarat City footballers a consistent training base and home ground, the new state of the art netball court did the same for the netballers and the juniors had one of the best junior ovals in the region to play on. Thankyou to Mark Patterson, Peter Wilson and the NBFC board for making these investments into our facilities and it is appreciated across the club. The following areas give an oversight of our activities during 2010. Leadership group The leadership group was led by Adam Richardson who was the senior captain. He took over the job after the departure of Matthew Doyle at the end of 2009. Adam did a fantastic job leading by example and was well supported by vice-captains Jason McNamara and Mitch Jenkins and deputy vice-captain Kyle Orr. The reserves captaincy was held by Jamie Lowe and Mark Holmes and the under 18.5s were led by captain Levi Cox and vice-captain Jack Connor. Each player did a great job directing their sides and we are encouraged by the potential leadership of many young players coming through.

12

Coaches and team managers Simon Payne was again at the helm in 2010 and did an admirable job throughout the season with a list struggling with injuries and form at stages. Simon will not continue in his coaching role at the club in 2011 but we wish him the best for the future. Simon will be remembered for his likeable personality and the friendships made. Mark Petrie again did a great job under trying circumstances in the reserves and even carried the title “playing coach” in a couple of encounters. Wayne Walton directed the under 18.5 boys to the grand final and showed great commitment and loyalty to the group of boys. We thank all the coach’s for their time and commitments during 2010.

Robbie Waters has been appointed as the North Ballarat City senior coach for 2011 in what is an exciting step for the club. Robbie will bring with him great experience through his 3 years at the Selkirk Roosters and we look forward to his contribution.

www.theroosters.com.au

Many thanks to team managers Steven Howard (seniors), Richard Start (reserves) and Chris Owins (U18.5) who ensure a smooth run on game days. Netball With the addition of a fourth netball grade for 2010 the club did a great job in recruiting the required numbers to fill all teams. Much credit must go to Bronwyn Howard and Karelle Duggan who have again worked tirelessly all year to give the girls the best experience possible. The results were not fantastic, but what the club did gain in 2010 was a strong sense of team and a tight bond between the netball girls. This was great for the club socially and holds us in good stead for the next couple of years. Congratulations to coach’s Steve Crane, Karelle Duggan and Courtney Harrison who were able to keep the girls motivated throughout the season and we hope to see them all back next year. Sponsors It is always difficult to gain sponsorship at local level sport and we have been fortunate to have one of the best around. Mark Petrie at Peach’s Fruit Market has continued his wonderful contribution in 2010 and we could not be happier to have the support of such dedicated and passionate people. Mark and his family have embraced the club and their contribution can not be understated. We also thank our numerous partners who are listed later in the annual report for their support in 2010. As mentioned, it is difficult to attract sponsors, and the contribution you give to our club is one of the reasons we continue to exist and we hope we can strengthen these partnerships going forward. We urge all club members to support the businesses which support the club. Volunteers Thankyou to all the hard working and passionate people around the club who donate their time to get our teams out on the ground every week. As President, it is a privilege to see all the work that goes on behind the scenes. The ones who help out will always do the job, no matter how small, and we can’t underestimate their contribution. We have a great range of characters around the club who are all well liked by the playing group and make the club what it is. We hope that the playing group will start repaying these people with some good results in the next few seasons. Volunteers are hard to find and certainly ours are irreplaceable. We sincerely thank each and every one for providing their time and skills for the betterment of the club.

Committee To the members of the committee for 2010, thankyou for your continued support and guidance that you have provided. We have stuck together through various issues this year and everyone has conducted themselves in a most professional manner. I thankyou for your loyalty to the club and we look forward to helping guide the club into a successful era. A big thankyou to Mitch Jenkins who has provided wonderful support to all members of the committee in the past year. We appreciate his work and acknowledge the significant contribution he has made. Significant achievements U18.5 footballers- 1st North City side to make a grand final since or reformation in 2006 Josh Bromley-Lynch: Under 16.5 senior BFL best and fairest John Orr- Inducted into the BFL hall of fame All 6 juniors sides made finals 3 premiers: under 16.5 reserves, under 14 seniors & under 12 reserves Junior section won the Merv & Mary Howard Junior Shield as the champion junior club The Future With appointments such as Robbie Waters as head coach, recruits being signed up, committees being appointed and juniors continuing to graduate through the ranks, we see 2011 as a very exciting year for the club and hope that everyone that contributed in their own way this year will be behind the club again next season.

Stephen Darbin President, North Ballarat Junior Football Club

Juniors Our junior program continues to grow and improve by the year and it is in a large way attributed to the guidance and leadership shown by Pete Carey over the last couple of years. As we continue to develop our links between the junior section and North City it will only benefit our club as a whole. Well done to all boys and their families who engaged in the club this season. We are constantly looking at ways to improve our junior program to provide the best guidance for the kids to help their development.

Fitzy wins Inaugural VicHealth Gaze Sporting Conduct Award THE honours keep coming for North Ballarat coach Gerard FitzGerald. The three-time VFL premiership coach won the inaugural VicHealth Lindsay Gaze Sporting Conduct Award at the Victorian Sports Awards presentation at Crown Casino. The coaching award, which recognises outstanding sportsmanship in attitude and behaviour, was presented by Gaze. “For the sporting community to assess me as an ambassador and a good role model, it means a lot to me,” FitzGerald said. “The fact that it comes from outside the footy community makes it particularly special. For someone like me who has such a passionate belief in the sport, but also for the coach’s role in the sport, to receive the award largely for those behaviours, it is important for me. It is my belief that the coach should be an ambassador. “My own footy club has been enormously supportive of me, as has the broader community. A lot of the well-wishes over the last couple of days have come from other sports.”

Hawthorn snaps up Isaac Smith in national draft... ISAAC Smith is 21, from southern New South Wales and began this season playing for Redan in the Ballarat league while he finished his studies at university. He ended the season playing six games for North Ballarat including in their VFL premiership side and is now an AFL footballer after last night being chosen by Hawthorn at pick 19 in the national draft on the Gold Coast - he took a long time to be an overnight success. A year ago Michael Barlow was taken from the same club and had an immediate impact for Fremantle. Then in trade week this year his Roosters teammate Cam Richardson went to North Melbourne. Now Smith has joined them in graduating from VFL to AFL. Smith’s rise is arguably more striking for not only has he arrived in AFL after few VFL games, he has done so on a road less travelled. Originally from the small town of Young near Cootamundra he has long understood that pursuing football needed serious commitment. ‘’I always thought I could compete and make it at the elite level, with my athletic ability I thought I could go OK but I didn’t grow until I was 17, 18. I grew about 30 centimetres in the year, I started year 11 and was in the 160s and was the second smallest in my school year and finished as the third tallest in year 12 and I was 189, 190,’’ he said. After school, study took him to Ballarat and playing with Redan where he first truly understood that AFL is a winter game. ‘’There was a step up in quality from Redan to North Ballarat but the thing was it was so windy and wet when I first started at North Ballarat it wasn’t even footy. It was only the finals that it turned into footy [as he knew it]. Coming from ‘Coota’ I hadn’t played wet weather football at all. Since about 1999 I don’t remember running around in the wet at all,’’ he said.

Development Report AFL Community Camp North Melbourne Football Club visited Ballarat in early February for the second year running as part of the AFL’s Community Camp program. During their visit to Ballarat the players conducted a well attended super-clinic at Eureka Stadium followed by coach and player seminars, community appearances and school visits. The busy schedule for the entire playing group, coaching panel and ancillary staff was capped off by an intra-club practice match that was very well received by the general public of Ballarat. Pre-planning for the 2011 Community Camp for the Kangaroos, to be held in Ballarat for the third consecutive year, has already commenced.

AFL NAB Auskick Auskick remains one of the most successful sport programs available for introducing children to the fundamentals of the game. Eligible for children between the ages of five and 12 years of age the Ballarat region’s participation rate of just under 1275 children aged predominantly between five and eight years of age is excellent. The participation rate has returned to levels achieved in the early 2000s prior to the introduction of U/10 junior football in Ballarat. The program continues to provide the developmental pathway to competitive football that aims to maximise the enjoyment of the game during and after Auskick participation.

AFL Player Appearances The annual program of AFL Player Appearances was again very successful in season 2010. In keeping with their strong regional alignment North Melbourne Football Club players returned to the immediate Ballarat area in March after their successful Community Camp visit during February. Twenty schools were able to receive visits from the available players. The impact of these visits is starting to have the desired effect for the Kangaroos with schools now actively seeking involvement with their appearances program annually. Visits were also held by Melbourne players to Skipton and Ballarat while Essendon also paid a visit to Carisbrook. Approximately 1800 students across the Ballarat region were able to interact with AFL players through this highly valued program that continues to provide great experiences for the children of country Victoria.

Level One Coaching Courses Two Level One Coach Accreditation Courses were held in the Ballarat area for season 2010. In conjunction with a Victorian Country Football League Administration Workshop the Auskick/Junior/Youth course was held in early March at St. Patrick’s College. Fifty coaches attended the day long session that included presentation by Rebels head coach Glenn Wilkins, assistant coach David Loader and U/15 V/ Line Cup program coach Jeff Whittaker. With a Rebels U/16 practice match and two U/18 practice matches against Dandenong Stingrays also held as part of the day this was a great way to launch the football season for many of the local region’s junior coaches. Mid June saw the Youth/Senior course held at North Ballarat Football Club with another 100 attendees gaining advice and support towards their coaching role. State Director of Coaching Steve Teakel was a well received presenter on the day along with Glenn Wilkins and David Loader who again shared their knowledge and experience.

U/15 V/Line Championships The Ballarat & District U/15 V/Line Cup program was preparing for the mid year carnival in Melbourne with its usual efficiency under head coach Jeff Whittaker when four weeks prior to the event the opportunity to submit a second team was presented. Successfully pulling together coaching and support staff, sufficient funding and planning fully for the carnival the program was able to compete in both Division One and Division Four for 2010. The chance to get another 24 players from the Ballarat region involved in the matches was deemed to good to pass up. The Division One team played some very good football recording a win against Ovens & Murray on the first day before finding Goulburn Murray too strong in atrocious conditions on the second day. A close loss to Bendigo on the final day could have gone either way as the boys acquitted themselves very well. Sam Willian (East Ballarat JFC), Matt Crouch (Ballarat JFC) and Tom Vadala (Maryborough JFC) were awarded the Player of the Carnival, Runner-Up Player of the Carnival and Most Consistent trophies. The Division Four team was a lightly built, running squad that wasn’t favoured by the heavy grounds but competed admirably. The developmental approach to this squad means the three losses against North Central Mallee, Sunraysia and Dandenong Ranges are not as important as the chance to play for the additional 24 players. With eight bottom aged players eligible to play again in 2011 the future looks bright. Tom Mooney (Ballarat JFC), Sam Hooper (North Ballarat JFC) and Tim Stubbs (Sebastopol JFC) won the respective awards for this team. Matt Crouch and Tim Stubbs won the highly regarded Players’ Player of the Carnival trophies for Division One and Division Four respectively. Matt Crouch represented Victoria Country at the School Sport Australia U/15 Championships held in Perth in late July. U/16 Legends Squad The Rebels’ U/16 squad performed well at the Victorian U/16 Country Championships played in Bendigo. A mix of 24 boys from across the Rebels region made the final squad after making it through a selection process that started with 110 players. Matches against Bendigo and Geelong resulted in one loss and one victory but more importantly the chance for the coaches to assess the potential of the players to progress to TAC Cup football in season 2011. Congratulations to Brad Crouch and Michael Close for their selection in the Victorian Country U/16 team that participated in the national carnival in Sydney. School Football School football remains huge element of football throughout the Ballarat area with the majority of primary and secondary schools participating in at least one competition. With regional and zone competitions available and a large variety of age brackets that are played in, the ability for both girls and boys to enjoy a game of football outside the traditional club and league environment is unmatched by most other sports. Anybody who attended Eureka Stadium for the Ballarat Associated Schools Grand Final for the 1st XVIII competition between St. Patrick’s College and Ballarat & Clarendon College knows the pride and passion the boys played with flows off the field and into the large

crowd in attendance. The concept of playing the Grand Final under lights at Eureka Stadium was undoubtedly a winner. St. Patrick’s College was able to secure the ‘double’ with their BAS title coupled with their win in the prestigious MCC Herald Sun Shield competition gaining them the title of best football school in Victoria for 2010. Such was the Patties dominance of the MCC Herald Sun Shield matches that they faced their stiffest opposition in the BAS matches. Ballarat & Clarendon College was the only school capable of pushing their rivals from across Wanliss Road as they just failed to win the BAS title. The fifth consecutive win in the MCC Herald Sun Country Shield was fantastic achievement in its own right. This has never previously been done and would appear to be one record that will stand for a very long time. Defeats of Mildura Secondary College and Warrnambool’s Emmanuel College created the chance to play in the Grand Final which was held at Bendigo’s Strathfieldsaye complex. Wanganui Park SC from Shepparton competed valiantly but could not overcome the efficiency of Ballarat & Clarendon College in very difficult conditions. The winning of this title and performances in the BAS would clearly place Ballarat & Clarendon College as the nearest rival to St. Patrick’s College in the state. A stellar year for Ballarat school football.

Three Rebels picked in draft... NORTH Ballarat Rebels duo Lucas Cook and Tom McDonald will remain teammates after being picked up by Melbourne in the AFL national draft on the Gold Coast last night. They will join Ben Mabon in the latest intake of AFL players, with North Melbourne selecting the ruckman from Hay in southern New South Wales late in the draft. Cook was first of the Rebels to find an AFL home. The Demons used pick 12 to name the tall key forward. McDonald, who is a versatile tall, had much longer to wait ? going into the big time at 53. The Kangaroos selected ruckman Mabon with their fourth selection at 71. All three boys watched the draft with families and friends at home - Cook at Hopetoun in the southern Mallee, McDonald at Edenhope in the West Wimmera and Mabon at Hay. Rebels regional manager Phil Partington, who attended the draft, was rapt with the outcome. “I’m very proud,” he told The Courier. “It’s a pleasing outcome for all involved. A lot of people have put in a lot of work to get this far ? the boys, their families, their home clubs and junior coaches,” he said. Partington said the Rebels only became involved at the end of the process. He said the success of the three boys also spoke volumes for the assistance provided by boarding schools in Ballarat, which enabled them and other youngsters to pursue their football dreams. Cook said he was surprised to be selected so high in the draft. “I had no idea. I didn’t expect to go so early.” Cook will get his first taste of being a Melbourne player on Monday. McDonald, who originally played with Edenhope-Apsley, said he was excited and relieved when his name was called out by the Demons. “I couldn’t believe it. It took a couple of minutes to sink in,’’ he said. McDonald said while Melbourne had shown interest, he had no idea where he might finish up if selected. He said as a young, improving team on the rise, he believed the Demons would be a good fit for him. “It’s fantastic.’’ Mabon admitted to thinking he might have to wait until the rookie draft before getting an opportunity as the selections came and went. “I thought I might be overlooked. When my name was called out, I was ecstatic. “I’ve never felt like this before. It’s the greatest moment in my life,’’ he said. “ It’s been my life goal to play AFL.” Mabon said he was looking forward to playing with North Melbourne. “It’s a great club.” “It will be a privilege.”

GWS signs Jeremy Cameron... JEREMY Cameron is the second North Ballarat Rebel to be recruited by AFL newcomer Greater Western Sydney. GWS yesterday announced the 17-year-old Cameron would be joining Rebels teammate Kurt Aylett on its list. Cameron, 196 centimetres tall, is from Dartmoor in Victoria’s far south-west and makes the move after just one season in the TAC Cup. He played 16 games for the Rebels and represented Vic Country in the national under-18 championships. The Kevin Sheedy-coached outfit has start-up concessions that allow it to recruit 12 players born between January and April 1993. Although GWS will not play in an AFL home- and-away series until 2012, it will line up in next year’s pre-season competition. A key forward, Cameron will spend next year in the AIS-AFL Academy program. Rebels general manager Phil Partington said Cameron was a powerfully built youngster, and an efficient user of the football with hand and foot. Partington said Cameron and his family had made a massive commitment to help get him to this stage, with many hours of travelling required to get him to training in Ballarat each Thursday as well as match days. “Mum and Dad have always been so supportive and are such strong influences on my game,’’ Cameron said. “They would take me to games, week in week out, and travel massive distances. The sacrifices they’ve made are huge.” GWS performance manager Alan McConnell said Cameron had huge potential, given his limited exposure to elite football programs so far. He believes Cameron will handle the move to Sydney well. Cameron told AFL.com.au that he was thrilled to have finalised his future with GWS. “It was really surreal when I started talking to the team at GWS. I mean I hadn’t even been to a live AFL match then,” he said. “Towards the latter half of the season this year was when I really started to think this might happen. “I knew through Rebels that I fell in the GWS age bracket, but I also knew there were a lot of other players that did as well. Luckily I could string a few good games together.” Cameron moves to Sydney at the weekend and begins pre-season training at the start of next week. GWS now has 16 signed players: priority 17-year-olds Tim Golds, Sam Darley, Tom Bugg, Dylan Shiel, Adam Treloar, Jack Hombsch and Jeremy Cameron; NSW zone selections Sam Schulz, Mark Whiley, Kurt Aylett, Anthony Miles, Josh Bruce and Jacob Townsend, NT zone selections Curtly Hampton and Shaun Edwards and NRL recruit Israel Folau.

Richardson set to thrive... NORTH Melbourne’s mature-aged recruit, Cameron Richardson, could be the next Michael Barlow, according to triple VFL premiership coach Gerard FitzGerald. Richardson would thrive in the AFL environment, said Fitzgerald, who coached Richardson at North Ballarat. He said AFL clubs should also consider several other VFL players in next week’s national draft or December’s rookie draft, headed by a trio of North Ballarat aces. Pacy left-footer Isaac Smith, Brad Sewell’s brother Myles, and midfield star Stephen Clifton are all being considered by AFL clubs. Smith could go as high as pick 15 to Geelong, 2009 Liston Medal winner Sewell was best afield in this year’s grand final, and Clifton was this year’s best-and-fairest in a premiership year. Richardson, 22, was selected by Gold Coast in trade week and on-traded to North Melbourne after a superb VFL season. FitzGerald said there were plenty more like him. “You just think the Michael Barlow story is such a wonderful catalyst for the VFL, and he is a similar player to Michael,” he said. “Cameron was an apprentice plumber, and very committed to his football, but he worked outside labouring all day, and then got to footy training. Now he gets an opportunity to go into a full-time environment and you think he would make significant progress.” Sewell had a breakout year last year and, while he did not match that this year, he showed he had what it took to make it at AFL level. “I think he deserves a go. He’s continuing to make progress in the competition,” FitzGerald said of Sewell. “Steve Clifton is a different player to Myles, but he’s very fierce at the ball and wins the ball well, and he penetrates and has an impact on the game as well.” FitzGerald said several VFL players only needed the opportunity to immerse themselves in a full-time training program to develop into elite players. “If you put them into a full-time AFL environment, we see the Barlows and Podsiadlys of the world and how they progressed last year. It’s largely from that jump from a limited preparation time at state league into the full-time preparation at AFL level.”

Rebels name new coach... DAVID Loader is the new North Ballarat Rebels head coach in the TAC Cup. Loader steps into the pivotal role in the Rebels’ pathways program after four years in development and assistant coaching roles with the under-18 team. He fills the vacancy left by Glenn Wilkins, who stood down after two seasons at the helm. Loader spent this year as a senior assistant coach and under-16 development squad coach. The 40-year-old, who coached SMW Rovers in the Mininera and Districts Football League before joining the Rebels, said the appointment fulfilled an ambition. Rebels regional manager Phil Partington also announced yesterday the appointment of Shaun O’Loughlin and Jason Muldoon as assistant coaches. O’Loughlin moves to the Rebels after being the Ballarat Swans senior coach in the Ballarat league for two years. The Hamilton-based Muldoon was a Rebels development coach this year, having previously coached Hamilton Imperials in the Western Border league. Partington said Loader was taking on an expanded role, without it being a full-time position. He said the position had been revamped to allow the coach to spend more time with players across the region. “It isn’t easy over such a large region.” The Rebels have squads based in Ballarat, Horsham, Hamilton and Warrnambool. Partington said getting all players as often as desired was not easy when trying to work in with full-time employment. Loader has a part-time position at St Patrick’s College, and is studying a Bachelor of High Performance (Sport and Business) for coaching AFL and elite athletes competing at national and international levels, which is in partnership with the Australian Football League and the AFL Coaches Association. Waters to take charge at North Ballarat City... FORMER Roosters assistant Robbie Waters has been given the chance to command his own troops next season after he was appointed senior coach for North Ballarat City. The 38-year-old, who served as North Ballarat’s reserves and development coach under Gerard FitzGerald this year, takes on the top job at the Ballarat Football League club he applied for three years ago. Waters said he intended to bring the principles and ideas he had learned in three seasons at the Roosters, first as defensive coach then as development coach, to the BFL club. ‘‘It will be a new, very structured game style. We plan to be fast across the ground and a lot of quick ball movement,’’ Waters said yesterday. ‘‘I hope the supporters can identify a North Ballarat Roosters style with the North City team. It has obviously been a very successful gameplan. ‘‘I applied for this job three years ago when it came up and was told I needed to work on my development skills. After three years at the Roosters, I was lucky the position came available at this time. ‘‘It’s tough to move away from the Roosters but I am looking forward to the opportunity to take control of my own team.’’ Waters said he would continue the work of predecessor Simon Payne in promoting players from the North Ballarat juniors, although he was keen to bring in some mature footballers to help out some of his lighter bodied players. ‘‘We’re not going to recruit 100 players,’’ he said. North Ballarat chairman Peter Wilson said Waters’ appointment was part of the club’s coaching academy program of developing coaches through to the highest levels of the sport. ‘‘One of the things we’ve endeavoured to do is to have a say where we are going to get our coaches from,’’ Wilson said. ‘‘You’d like to see a lot of ex-AFL coaches come back to coach in Ballarat but that doesn’t happen so much here, so we have to grow our own coaches. We’re hoping through our coaching academy to attract, develop and retain our coaches, whether that be at the North Ballarat Rebels, North City or Roosters level. ‘‘Robbie Waters is an example of that. He had a role at the Roosters, and he is now at North Ballarat City. In Robbie’s case he can coach at North City but he could move into the Rebels, or the Roosters. ‘‘When we need to look at a coach for the Roosters in the future, and we’re not putting the mozz on Fitzy but when he is no longer available, we hope that coach would come from within the coaching academy.’’ Waters said he did not want to make grandiose predictions about where his team might finish next season but noted that, if the club could turn three or four of its narrow losses from this season into victories, then finals was a possibility.’’ Wilson said the appointment marked the next stage of North Ballarat City’s return to the BFL. ‘‘When we originally tried to get into the BFL we were rebuffed and had to play in the Bendigo league,’’ Wilson said. ‘‘We’re now in, in the sense of playing in the BFL, and we’ve done our apprenticeship. We are now ready to take the next step, winning games regularly and playing in finals.’’

Sharkey plays 100th game... A QUIET achiever. There is no better way to describe North Ballarat defender Matt Sharkey. He is one of the Selkirk Roosters most decorated players. Sharkey is a two-time VFL premiership player and a club best-and-fairest, having tied for the honour with Michael Searl in 2008. And he is quiet. Just ask any of his teammates. To try to get Sharkey to speak up, the Roosters have gone as far as developing a training drill which isolates him and forces him to raise his voice. Sharkey admits he prefers to let his actions speak for him. “I just get on with the job,” he said. It has worked a treat Sharkey, 24, played his 100th senior game for the Roosters in the grand final against Northern Bullants at Etihad Stadium. Sharkey is in his seventh year with North Ballarat and has developed into one of the competitions most reliable and consistent defenders. Even his quiet nature means he keeps a relatively low profile. He gets all variety of assignments, sometimes having to pick up talls and other times smalls. Originally from Ballarat Swans and having played with North Ballarat Rebels, Sharkey believes his increased physical strength is one his best assets. He said he was a skinny kid when he started out with the Roosters and had made a concerted effort to build himself up. Sharkey says this has given him greater confidence to tackle whatever assignments he is given. Only captain Shaune Moloney (186) and Marc Greig (174) have played more VFL senior games with the Roosters.

HIKE DAY 3 - ALOLA TO TEMPLETONS ONE (10 hours trekking) THURSDAY 11th NOVEMBER The guys had a better day today weather-wise with the rain holding off and low humidity. They trekked down the Eora Creek Village and inspected Japanese trenches, ammunition, and armoury. They had a bite for lunch at Templetons Two before making their way to Templetons One where they enjoyed a refreshing swim before having their dinner cooked for them. HIKE DAY 4 - TEMPLETONS ONE TO KAGI (9 hours trekking) FRIDAY 12th NOVEMBER Thankfully another day free of rain. They guys trekked to Naduri via the Kokoda Gap, ascending Mt Bellamy, which is the highest point on the track. They then went on to Myola One Airfield and hospital site where they got to inspect the ammunition dump that still contains wartime Australian mortars, grenades and mines. AFter lunch they got to experience one of the highlights of the trip - meeting the last remaining Fuzzy Wuzzy Angel. This was a very humbling experience for all the group and something they will certainly remember as a highight from the trek. The group then trekked to Kagi which is where the wonderful team of Porters all originated. They experiences a wonderful traditional village welcome and are now spending the night experiencing cultural village life on the track.

HIKE DAY 5 - KAGI TO MENARI (7 hours trekking) SATURDAY 13th NOVEMBER The group started the day trekking with quite a bit of rain. They trekked up Mission Risge and Brigade Hill, which is teh scene of another famous ferocious battle. Fortunately by lunch time the rain stopped and after enjoying lunch at the monument on Brigade Hill, they started the downhill walk for a refreshing swim in the river near the picturesque Menari. HIKE DAY 6 - MENARI TO NAURO (5 hours trekking) SUNDAY 14th NOVEMBER With the rain holding off today, the guys made pretty good time. After leaving Menari, they walked up a steep saddle but the rest of the day was relatively easy (compared to the rest of the track). They had a swim and some lunch at Brown River before continuing on to Nauro village campsite where they have settled in for the evening. HIKE DAY 7 - NAURO TO UA-ULE CREEK (7 hours trekking) MONDAY 15th NOVEMBER MONDAY 15th NOVEMBER A tough slog today. It rained very heavily all day so the guys got saturated and it made for a very gruelling trek. They trekked over the Maguli Range, down to and across Ofi Creek and then up the Ioribaiwa Ridge whcih was the scene of more vicious fighting. They had lunch in view of the Kunai grass area which is the southernmost point of the Japanese advance on the Kokoda track. Due to the rain, not many of the group chose to have a refreshing swim in the beautiful rock pools, but rather tried to get dry under the huts and tents. Only one day of walking to go..... HIKE DAY 8 - UA ULE CREEK TO OWERS CORNER (6 hours trekking) TUESDAY 16th NOVEMBER Yay - they’ve made it. After numerous river corssings, the group trekked the long steep climb up Imita Ridge and then down the Godlen Stairs to the Goldie River where they cooled off with a swim. After that, they climbed a steep hill to their final destination - Owers Corner - where they walked shoulder to shoulder together under the famous Kokoda Arch. Here, they enjoyed a well deserved delicious lunch with cold drinks and hot food whilst they reflected upon the last 8 days. They then boarded the bus to the Bomana War Cemetary where they paid homage to all the brave men who lost their lives on the track. Afterwards they travelled back to the hotel in Port Moresby where they are currently enjoying a presentation dinner and celebration with their porters and support staff.

ARMtour Experience in the Northern Territory! Justin Abrams, Head of Marketing and Grant Bell, Selkirk Rooster Player have recently returned from a week in the Northern Territory as participants in the ARMtour program run by NASCA (National Aboriginal Sporting Chance Academy). “Participating was one of the most rewarding and fulfilling experiences of my life”, said Justin. “Not only did we have the opportunity to teach football skills with the kids, but more importantly spent time with the kids and the community. We assisted to teach basic reading, writing and healthy lifestyle choices and emphasized the importance of staying in school and gaining an education”. Justin visited the Yuelamu community which is situated approximately 350km north west of Alice Springs on the Tanami Track, the community still spoke in their native Anmatjere language. The community has a population of approximately 300 people. Grant visited the Santa Teresa community, which is situated 80km south east of Alice Springs. There is a K-Y10 school that caters for Indigenous children in the community, run by the NT Catholic Education Office. The aim of the ARMtour was to ‘enrich the lives and encourage the dreams’ of indigenous youth in remote Northern Territory. To communicate positive lifestyle choices, build self-esteem and encourage active participation in sport and education. “The experience has been life changing for both myself and Grant, and I believe that we have taken away far more than what we left in the remote communities”. It is something that everyone should experience and improve their understanding of Indigenous Australia”. “If it was not for NASCA and the ARMtour program, we would not have had the opportunity to grow as human beings and make a small difference in the Indigenous children’s way of life”, said Justin.

Clifton Dream Season... POWER midfielder Stephen Clifton has capped off a dream season with North Ballarat Roosters top individual honour. The triple premiership player was awarded the Allen L Stott Memorial Medal on Saturday night as the 2010 Roosters’ best and fairest. But Clifton was most proud of the three Victorian Football League premiership cups, resplendent on stage at the Mercure Ballarat. “Those three cups are certainly what you do play for,” Clifton said. “To win one was great but to complete three is amazing. “After winning two, you’ve still got that hunger and just want to keep winning premierships.” The Allen Stott medal has sealed a rare club triple for Clifton. He became the third player to have also won the North Ballarat Rebels best and fairest (2005) and the JJ Liston Medal as the VFL’s best and fairest player, an award he captured as joint winner this season. Myles Sewell and Julian Field have won all three accolades. Clifton, in his fifth season with the Roosters, said it was an honour to share such company. “The both fantastic players to stand alongside,” Clifton said. “When I came out of Rebels and was asked to join the Roosters, I was still raw and had a lot to learn. “(Coach Gerard FitzGerald) being my under-18 coach certainly helped and he’s taught me a lot the past couple of years with the Roosters.” Clifton polled 264 votes, tallied from 14 of the Roosters’ 21 matches. A strong season finish helped Clifton edge out Sewell, who finished runner-up on 243 votes, and North Melbourne-listed forward Corey Jones on 242. Sewell won the JJ Liston and Allen Stott double last season and this year was awarded the Norm Goss Medal as best on ground in the VFL grand final. Jones stuck with the Roosters after his AFL retirement mid-season and claimed the team’s leading goalkicker title with 52 goals. Clifton, 23, is a product of the Lake Wendouree juniors, and could hardly wait for the Roosters’ next football chapter. “We had so many inexperienced players on the fringe step up as key onballers this season,” Clifton said. “This 2010 premiership is probably the most satisfying when you look at all the rebuilding we had to do.”

Moloney announces retirement North Ballarat Roosters premiership captain Shaune “Spider” Moloney has ended his decorated VFL playing career. The much-loved club leader announced his retirement at the North Ballarat best and fairest presentation dinner. In making the announcement an emotional Moloney said his retirement was purely based on his physical form, “It was a tough decision - the club’s been a big part of my life, and I already feel a void inside. This year I have found it hard to get through games and hard to train. I’m not psychologically or emotionally fatigued, I feel as fresh as anything mentally, but physically it was getting too much.” Moloney played 202 Victorian Football League matches with the Roosters, including 187 senior games. Originally from Broadford, Shaune joined the club in 1998 from the Lake Wendouree Football Club, as a first year Phys Ed student at the University of Ballarat. He spent 2005 overseas and returned to step up as captain in 2006, a role he has held the past five seasons. Moloney is the club’s only premiership captain, having led the Selkirk Roosters to three consecutive flags in 2008, 2009 and 2010. He also played in the club’s 1999 and 2000 VFL grand final teams. North Ballarat chairman Peter Wilson described the Roosters’ number 10 as a “one generational player” and “champion footballer, champion clubman, champion bloke”. The Selkirk Roosters head Coach, Gerard FitzGerald labelled his skipper an “all time great and club legend” amid tributes at the dinner.

Moloney’s decorated career includes: • 202 Club Games (187 senior; 15 reserves) • Captain 2006 – 2010 • Premiership Team 2008, 2009 & 2010 • 2004 – Allen L Stott Medal (Club Best & Fairest) • 2004 – VFL representative team v WA • 2007 – Senior Best and Fairest runner up • 2003 – Senior Best & Fairest 3rd • 1999, 2000 Grand Final Team • 1998 Senior Encouragement Award • VFL Life Member

Dare to dream... MASKELL medallist Levi Dare is aiming to return to the VFL next season with three-time reigning premier North Ballarat Roosters. The young ruckman attended the Roosters’ first preseason training at Eureka Stadium on Monday night after being approached by coach Gerard FitzGerald. “Gerard rang me a few times about five weeks ago, so I thought I’d go down there and give it a crack,” Dare said. It marks the 20-year-old’s second attempt at a VFL career after a stint with Port Melbourne, where he claimed the reserves best and fairest and led the league’s reserves goalkicking in his debut season with the club in 2008. But milk prices sunk and petrol prices soared, meaning the Nalangil dairy farmer could not play out the season with The Borough in 2009. Cobden welcomed him midway through last year after Camperdown and Colac both turned him away. His stellar season with the Bombers this year was highlighted by sharing Hampden league’s top individual honour with North Warrnambool Eagles captain Liam Ryan. Dare said returning to the VFL was in the back of his mind following his Maskell win. “I only thought about it a little bit but when Gerard rang me, I started thinking about it more,” he said. “I’d love to get back in there again and have another crack. “The difference between North Ballarat and Port Melbourne is that I don’t have to travel as far. “I’ll be able to save a bit of money.” The Hampden interleague representative was confident he would capitalise on his second chance at VFL. “I’ve been told that there’s a spot there for me if I want it bad enough,” he said. “I just have to do the hard work. I’ll be giving it my best shot.” Dare will be required to attend two of the three preseason training sessions per week, making the trip on Mondays and Fridays but missing Wednesdays because he is a distance player. If he makes the Roosters’ final cut, he explained it would be bittersweet.
