Local Government Forum Strengthens Football’s Future The future of Australian Football in Victoria is bright, following the success of AFL Victoria’s Local Government Forum at Punt Road Oval last month. More than 90 per cent of Victoria’s Local Councils, along with representatives from other key sporting organisations were in attendance to discuss future planning for football across the State. Created in 2013, the biennial event was designed to showcase the strategic direction of football in Victoria and acknowledge the important role that Local Government plays in the development and growth of our game. Hosted by Nicole Livingstone OAM, representatives heard from key community football presenters about AFL Victoria’s range of programs, designed to increase and strengthen participation in every corner of the state. AFL General Manager of Football Operations Simon Lethlean, Richmond CEO Brendon Gale, AFL great Matthew Richardson and AFL Women’s stars Alicia Eva and Lauren Arnell were also in attendance to discuss the importance of the health of community football to the development of our game at the elite level. The 2017 Local Government Forum also saw the launch of AFL Victoria’s 2017 – 2022 Strategic Plan and the 2017 – 2022 Football Facilities Development Strategy ‘Growing the Heartland’. Outlining the direction of Australian Football in Victoria for the next six years, the documents
summarise AFL Victoria’s role in facility provision and identifies the key strategies to support football at all levels right across Victoria. AFL Victoria CEO Steven Reaper said that the Local Government Forum was integral to the future of Australian Football in the state. “The Local Government Forum is a terrific opportunity for organisations to come together and share information and best practice regarding Australian Football as it relates to community development and local government service provision,” Reaper said. “Councils collectively invest millions of dollars into football annually in the development and maintenance of football facilities, so it is important to recognise the role of Local Government in developing and supporting Australian Football in Victoria. “AFL Victoria and Councils own forecasting predict a need for nearly 100 new grounds in the next six years across Victoria, which will cater for the increased participation levels seen across Victoria. “By discussing our strategic direction in a forum such as this, we believe it will enhance our collective understanding of each other’s needs and plans in the areas of participation and facilities for more than 410,000 participants in football.” The 2017 Local Government Forum was made possible with the support of Richmond Football Club, Inside EDGE Sport & Leisure Planning, AFL Sports Ready and Musco Lighting.

Easter Weekend Welcome to the crazy round played over 3 days. For some it’s the 4th full moon of the year, for others it’s the 1st full moon of the football season. Either way we know that all the loonies come out to play. If you have ever worked in an industry that deals with the public like our Police, Ambos, Firemen and Women, plus the health care industry you understand what a full moon means. Everywhere you look there are crazy people. I do ask however, who are the craziest of all? The footballers who we are there to watch, the paying public who are the real experts on football (just ask any one of them and they will tell you) or the umpires, of which there are 3 groups. Field, Boundary and Goal. The quick answer is the women and men, girls and boys who umpire football. The next question you must ask is, amongst this group of individuals who are the looniest? Again, the answer is simple. It must be the loony ones that run between the behind posts. I hear the goal umpires groan “not again” but they are wrong. It is the boundary umpires. You must ask yourself what goes through the mind of a boundary umpire during a game. I asked one who just happens to be my son. His first answer was interesting. “I don’t know. Just trying to keep my eye on the ball and anticipate where the ball is going.” He didn’t have a second answer. This says to me that there is not much going
on between the ears however they might also be the smart ones of the group. Think about it. You constantly hear the players and crowd questioning every decision a field umpire makes or more to the point doesn’t make. The advice given to goal umpires on any close decision can border on the insane, however the boundary umpires must only worry about their hair and the way it flows as they sprint past like the flash from behind post to behind post. As a goal umpire who regularly relies on the looniest umpires of all (the boundary umpire) I thank you for your craziness. Keep up the great work. Season 2017 is underway, 6 months of preparation was put to the test. New coaches and new players entered the field for the first time with teams looking to flash the new recruits in front of their supporters. We saw the spectacular with Beaconsfield pushing Berwick until halfway through the last quarter in the first ‘Battle of the Creek’. Cranbourne sent a message to the competition with an emphatic 11 goal last quarter with new recruit Khaled Kandakji booting 7 goals for the victors. Doveton recovered after an early stumble against Officer to start the season with a win at home, while Tooradin had too much class against Pakenham, their 5 goal win sees them sitting second on the ladder.
DOVETON 16.14.110 DEFEATED OFFICER SFC 10.12.72 Officer got the jump early making better use of the conditions to extend their lead to 20 points by quarter-time. New coach Doug Koop would have been impressed by the efforts of the Kangas to hold The Doves goalless. Doveton shot into gear in the second quarter and took the game by the scruff of its neck, with new recruit Taylor Joyce and Michael Henry getting amongst the goals as the Doves kicked 7 goals to one which led to a 42 point turnaround with the home side leading by 22 points at the half. The third quarter was a tighter contest with Officer outscoring Doveton again but could only reduce the margin to 19 points. Henry and Joyce combined for 8 goals as the Doves started to find confidence under the guidance of first year coach Aaron Davey. Officer showed plenty of promise and improvement by turning pressure into scoring opportunities but they were outclassed by Doveton, The Doves kicked 6 goals to 3 in the last to runout victorious by 38 points.
CRANBOURNE 33.17.215 DEFEATED HAMPTON PARK 5.1.31 2 teams at opposite ends of the football spectrum met to start their season campaign. Cranbourne won the premiership, while Hampton Park were anchored to the bottom of the ladder. Cranbourne appear to have taken off from where they left last season, while Hampton Park suffered early in the pre-season with many players opting for greener pastures but have steadily built some momentum after Christmas. In recent times Cranbourne have had the wood over Hampton with successive 100 point wins last season. Hampton Park’s new recruit Shaun Dekkers kicked the first goal of the match as the underdogs had a slender lead. The first quarter was tight with both teams exchanging goals until the 20 min mark when the premiers got a run on kicking 5 unanswered goals. That led The Eagles to kick the next 9 goals to start the second quarter as their lead grew beyond 90 points. Experienced campaigners Troy Tharle and Matt Fletcher were lively inside forward 50. Hampton Park got one back to trial by 99 points at the half. The third quarter saw a much tighter contest as Hampton Park came out with intent and put pressure on the ball carriers. Cranbourne’s last quarter was sublime, restricting Hampton Park to a scoreless quarter while kicking 11 goals of their own. New recruit Khaled Kandakji finished with 7 goals, Tharle 5 and Fletcher 4 respectively in their 184 point win.
BEACONSFIELD 5.3.33 LOST TO BERWICK 7.9.51 The ‘Battle of the Creek’ always throws up its on surprises as further history is etched into the books. Both teams were guided by new coaches and new recruits looking to impress on the big stage. The build-up was massive with both teams brimming with confidence. Beacy capitalised early and jumped to an early 10 point lead before Lucas JellymanTurner’s move to the forward line proved fruitful as his goal reduced the margin to 12 points at quarter-time. Berwick were wasteful in front of goal but goals to Michael Harold and Luke Sheppard had the Wickers in front. Jordan Stewart kicked an important goal for the home-side to reduce the margin to 8 points at the main change. The third quarter was a tight tussle before Beacy’s new captain Scott Meyer kicked an inspirational goal to reduce the margin to 1 point. Berwick’s Tim Gunn was relatively quiet before he turned the game on its head booting back-to-back goals and the Wickers enjoyed their biggest lead of the match by 13 points. Sheppard kicked another before new recruit James Magner put the result beyond doubt. Beacy’s power forward Beau Dowler kicked his second for the match but it wasn’t enough as Berwick won by 18 points.
TOORADIN 9.14.68 DEFEATED PAKENHAM 5.8.38 Tooradin welcome Pakenham with teams coming into the opening round with contrasting pre-seasons. Tooradin have once again recruited strongly as they look to move up the ladder while Pakenham built on strong foundations and traditions has seen a major turnover of personnel. Tooradin started well and managed to get out to a 9 point lead at the first break it could have been more if it wasn’t for inaccurate kicking in front of goal. The second quarter was scrappy with either team unable to capitalise on opportunities as the Gulls took a 10 point lead at the main change. New Seagull recruit Luke McKenna was starting to have an influence on the contest while Andrew Dean was looking dangerous around goal. Pakenham had no answer and struggled to build any momentum into their game. Tooradin finally hit the scoreboard kicking 3 goals to 1 and extend their lead to 21 points at three quarter time. Tooradin continued to pressure Pakenham into costly mistakes as they got the lead out to beyond 5 goals. Damien Holmes battled hard for the away side with 2 goals and Liam Tyrell providing a shining light on a dark day for Pakenham. Dean finished the game with 3 goals, which Nick Laing and experienced recruit Matt Shorey booted 2 goals apiece in their impressive 30 point win at home.

HAMPTON PARK (9TH 0-1 14%) V DOVETON (4TH 1-0 152%) (GOOD FRIDAY) Last Time - Round 17 Hampton Park 7.10.52 lost to Doveton 16.10.106 Now a traditional fixture the Good Friday clash sees Hampton Park welcome Doveton. This game really generates its own interest with big crowds getting out to support the match. Hampton Park will be buoyed by the fact they will have the dynamic forward ex-Demon Russell Robertson to pull on the boots and provide a target close to goal. Goal scoring has at times become difficult for Doveton but they slammed home 16 goals after quarter-time showing they could be a genuine finals threat. New recruit Taylor Joyce will provide different options close to goal bringing a different dimension to Doveton. Doveton will have bring too much of a punch to Hampton Park, but Redbacks supporters will witness a better contest than last week. Doveton by 41 points.

Round One saw us host the Officer Football Club which was ensured to be a big start to the season for our 3 new coaches and sides. And the day sure did not disappoint with some brilliant displays of football. We came away with 2/3 wins for the day and are extremely proud of the efforts displayed by the boys. Our 19’s boys started slowly falling 4 goals behind early in the match. To the guy’s credit, we shifted the momentum in the second half of the game mainly through the efforts of Dylan bowman, Jake Nicholson & Sam Morgan in the midfield but unfortunately we couldn’t convert our dominance on the scoreboard with some wayward kicking at goal costing us in the end. Our reserves was great to get a win first up against an always competitive Officer side. Our first half was great with fast ball movement, but Officer hit back hard in the 3rd quarter, but doves came through with a solid final quarter to seal the game. Jamie Tapner and the Delforno boys were brilliant down back, while Sammy Muirhead continued his recent form scoring regularly. Our senior’s side had a very slow start to the day against Officer who held us goalless at quarter time. We soon stepped it up a notch which saw us kick 7 goals to 1 in the second quarter. Taylor Joyce and Michael Henry were both dominate down forward with the assistance of Big Russ in the centre. We entered the half time break 22 points up and a
little more upbeat than the first. The second half saw some impressive displays of football and our backline made it extremely difficult for Officer to score, by the likes of Mitchell Woolgar and Harley Primrose who played influential roles throughout the day. We ran away the day 38 point victors in end. Congratulations boys and we are all looking forward to a strong successful season ahead. We would like to thank our wonderful committee who worked tirelessly leading up to round one. Without you guys we wouldn’t be able to take the field or court. Your hard work doesn’t go un-noticed, and again we thank you. We would also like to thank all the Footballers, Netballers and Supporters who volunteered their time to work in the canteen, BBQ tent and the supporter’s group tent. It is truly much appreciated and it just proves that more hands make light work. Next week we travel down the road to take on Hampton Park in our annual Good Friday match which always ensured to pull a big crowd. Our U19’s kick off the day against Cranbourne at 10.30am whilst our mini doves kick start the day at 7.55am over at the netball. Make sure you head down and check it out. Also don’t forget our Full Moon Party which is hosted back at the rooms that night from 7pm onwards. Good Luck to both our Footballers and Netballers, do us proud. Go Doves! #doveylove #doves2017

BEACONSFIELD 52 V BERWICK 40 What a great day of netball for both sides as the netballers took their games to new levels with the traditional ‘Battle of the Creek flowing over to the courts. Beaconsfield got into their rhythm against their old foes early and established a 10 goal lead. The game was a lot closer than reflected on the scoreboard, with the Wickers failing to capitalise on every opportunity. The Eagles managed to keep the high intensity going and extend their lead to 7 goals by halftime. Berwick’s endeavour never waived they just weren’t able to close the gap against their experienced opponents. Beacy looked impressive playing a free flowing style allowing their goal shooters the best opportunity to score. To Berwick’s credit they never stopped trying although Beacy found themselves in front pushing their lead out to 12 points to win the game.
CRANBOURNE 50 V HAMPTON PARK 33 In conditions that made it difficult for both teams it was important for teams to settle and stick to their game plans. As like most sports the build up to Round 1 is enormous and it can take a while for new players to adapt to the new competition. Cranbourne is a team on the rise, they didn’t recruit as heavily as other sides but will rely on their brilliant core of players to move up the ladder. Cranbourne’s quick ball movement and transitional play setup great opportunities to score. The Eagles got the jump on the Redbacks and setup an unsurmountable lead. Hampton Park will be a team that improves as the season grows, with many new faces it will take a while for them to bed down the new game style and structures as the Eagle ran away with a confidence boosting win by 17 goals.
DOVETON 44 V ROC 48 The closest game of round one was between Doveton and ROC, which was interesting as you can expect both teams to be jostling for ladder
position towards the end of the season. The Kangaroos welcomed back a group of talented netballers which will add depth and experience to a young group. ROC has always been a strong club with a plethora of junior talent in their squad, while Doveton have brought in experienced coach Liz Edwards to steer the ship. The outcome was crucial for either team to start the season on the right foot. It was a ferocious contest with neither team willing to give up an inch with the margin between both sides staying relatively close. The conditions ensured that the team who reduced turnovers and could maintain fluent ball movement was going to take away the win. It was a tremendous spectacle as the game went down to wire with the effervescent Kangas getting the hop at the vital time to win by 4 points.
TOORADIN 66 V PAKENHAM 23 In the most one-sided match of the season opener, it was the Gulls who looked impressive in every aspect of their play. The girls from Westernport Oval appear to have taken their game to new heights. It’s an amazing feat considering the same side was unable to win a game during the 2015 season. The introduction of Kelly Haynes as senior coach has seen a major overhaul on how the Tooradin Netball sides conduct themselves as a club, with better structures in place and the addition of some experienced players has the Gulls looking to improve on their 5th placing from last year and they have started their new campaign in fine style. The Gulls dominated from start to finish, applying pressure when without the ball and appear to have a game style which will cause problems for most sides. For Pakenham it was always going to be a work in progress with many off court changes providing an opportunity for the new breed of Lionesses to step up and take their chance at senior level and we should see an improved performance as the season continues. This doesn’t take away anything from Tooradin’s dominating performance winning by 43 goals.

HAMPTON PARK (8TH 0-1) V DOVETON (6TH 0-1) This is another game which can have a big impact on how their seasons progresses, neither team will want to start their season with 2 loses which will ensure another close contest. Hampton Park have had a huge turnover of players at the top-end and it could take a while for the girls to gel and play at the standards set last season. Doveton were right in the contest against ROC but just fell short at the final whistle. This game could go either way, Hampton Park will enjoy having the extra week to prepare and play at home, while the Doves will want to build on the momentum from Round One. Doveton by 6 goals.

U13 had an awesome start to the game. We worked well as a team, playing our own game resulting in a 3 goal lead at quarter time. Unfortunately rushing and silly mistakes which we will work on, resulted our game into a 6 goal loss. All in all it was a great first game to the season and we thank Cranbourne. Best on was Ellarnah U15 team played a tough Cranbourne side today. Cranbourne stepped on court giving us everything from the first centre pass, however the girls stepped up and fought the entire game walking away with only an 11 goal loss. For a team with only 1 top age player today, this was an impressive beginning to the season. Our defenders gave it all with several great intercepts with the mid court and goalers rewarding every effort. Great game girls, you impressed Tayla Jean and I the whole game. Keep it up. U17 Whites Cranbourne came out firing from the start, but each one of you stepped up and owned your bib and showed them a thing or 2 about dedication and game play. We set individual goals, and you all worked hard to put them into practice. At half time, we spoke about intensity, and you went out and gave a phenomenal second half. The corrections I gave were taken and applied, defence got tighter, mid court fought harder, and the goalers finished off all the hard fought turnovers. U17 Red went hard for the first half very happy with the positions and game, we went in knowing they’d be a tough side unfortunately no win dropped our heads last quarter with a couple injuries but we will be coming back hard for good Friday and show our improvements as a team! Stoked with our team and how they have welcomed me as a new coach for a great season ahead. D grade Cranbourne came out firing being down at 1/2 time by 8 we made some changes throughout
the court and girls got a spray from the coach our whole game changed around our intensity and commitment to our game and positions is what won us the game by a tight fight winning by 1. Best on TJ C grade had a bit of a shaky start but picked up towards end of 1st and played better in the 2nd. Few silly mistakes which brought us down in points but picked up in 3rd qtr. having that lead, but Cranbourne was just a tad too strong in the last qtr. which we had lost by a couple. Few things to work on as a team, but apart from that, well done to C grade. Best on was to Lisa Simpson. B Grade Starting out strong in the first qtr and a dominant performance by our shooters saw us leading by a goal going into the second qtr. the second qtr. we struggled a little moving the ball down court in the windy conditions and Cranbourne came back to level the game by the half time break. After a chat at half time and discussing the conditions and the need for playing a short ball and driving hard we were able to push out to a 3 goal lead driven mostly by our defenders working hard in the circle and creating opportunities for the turn over. Sadly we couldn’t hold it together going into the last with Cranbourne turning a 3 goal lead into a 3 goal deficit and running away with game. A grade a whole new team working together, working out combinations, our attacking line working well with some great drives and passages of play. Unfortunately it wasn’t our day but looking forward to the season ahead. Best on Kass. We would like to wish Jacinta and Chloe speedy recoveries with your injuries and hope to see u out there soon GO REDBACKS....

Round one saw us welcome ROC. We came away with 3/6 junior & 3/4 senior wins for the day. It just proves that we are growing stronger & are becoming a real serious competitor in this competition. A Grade: Such a proud player/coach of our 17s girls whom stepped up. Proud because not only were there attitudes intact, the way they held themselves in this level truly shows the growth we have at Doveton. That game was very much ours for the taking, let’s just learn from our mistakes and gain on it for the next round against Hampton. B Grade: Great win for the season, a few young, new but talented faces. ROC sure gave us a good first hit out which caused us to turn the ball over a few times. Once momentum kicked in after the 2nd quarter, it was just keeping the game tempo controlled to our own style of play. A well-deserved, team effort WIN! C Grade: Great first win and start for the season, it sets the benchmark for the season ahead. Started off a little rocky in our first quarter as the nerves settled in & our ladies found their feet. As much as ROC took as much as we gave, our girls never gave up. The attitude, sportsmanship and team spirit was enormously evident in the last quarter as the girls pulled it together and came away with the win. D Grade: Started off a little shaky and nervous against a strong and physical ROC side but soon found their feet by the second quarter. In the second half the girls settled the ball, played to their strengths and took the lead. We showed glimpses of brilliance and our defence end just dominating. U17’s Red: Round 1 with two new girls Kyla Quinn, Oceana Perry in the team fitting in fantastic. 1st quarter was goal for goal. At 1/2 time our newly appointed captain, Mel Webster giving our girls a rev up, we stepped it up in the
third quarter. Every one of us working hard, doing the team things, we passed well & we will shot even better. But today our attitude was tremendous. U17’s White: What a great way to start the season. We had a few nervous plays but as soon as the whistle went they were fine. Saturday we found some great combinations thru out the court. We came away with a convincing win. U15’s Red: Came up against last year’s grand finalists with a whole new side. Our girls started off a little nervous but soon found their feet. Our attack end settled in the second half but our passes let us down. But to our girls credit we never gave and we fought to the end, running away winners by 1 goal! U15 White: Whilst we weren’t luck enough to walk away with the win you guys gave me 110% effort for a solid 4 quarters! A few nerves were from not just players but also coach quickly settled when we put together some impressive plays. We have plenty to work and will hit the court ready to take on our next opponent! U13 Red: Slow start with a mix of bad weather and a new team to hit the court. Some great plays at times, some silly mistakes letting us down, showed we also need to work on a few things as a team & as individuals. Unfortunately not coming away with a win was disappointing for the girls, keep your heads and your attitudes held high girls and the rest will happen naturally! U13 White: Great first game girls was very impressed with you all coming together as a team we have a few things we need to work on but overall I am very proud of you. Remember to always keep your heads up & the wins will come.
