What was your community like growing up? I grew up in a small town in Shandong and my world was very limited. Like most boys my age, I had a patriotic dream to visit our nation's capital, but we didn't have enough money, so we just learned about it from TV. How has your world changed? Now the whole world is open to travel and business. Working in the foreign trade industry, I often travel to Guangdong, Shanghai, Hong Kong...and Beijing. Was it everything you hoped? Although I see many new people and places, I still prefer to be at home with my wife and newborn son. What kind of world do you want for your son? When I was young, I was simple. I wanted to be a scientist—maybe a physicist. But I couldn't follow my path; I had to earn a living. I hope my son can have a more carefree life and be able to choose a career based on his interests, not just the need to get by.

What were your early impressions of China? In 1984, I came to China for a business trip. The highway from Shenzhen to Fuzhou was still being built so there were no lights or traffic—just the army stopping us about five times along the way. Most people were wearing blue jackets and very drab clothing. I went to Beijing in winter and visited the Great Wall. There were no other tourists; I stood alone in the snow, imagining myself a Chinese soldier waiting for invaders to approach. What is your interest in history? I'm retired from banking and now deal in old maps and prints, having amassed a collection from all the places I've lived these past thirty years. I enjoy how science, art, and religion are reflected in the maps, and seeing history as people saw it at the time.

REDSTAR CHRONICLE SINOCES China's largest consumer electronics showcase will run from 9 - 12 July at Qingdao International Convention Center on Miaoling Lu, and this year will feature the Best Of Innovations 2009 - an exhibition showcasing some of the most unique developments in household technology from around the world. It is the only time in this year's circuit that this particular segment will feature, aside from the flagship exhibition in Las Vegas. Last year's SINOCES received more than 62,000 visitors, and displayed exhibitions by 500 companies from around the globe. According to research by the Consumer Electronics Association, the Chinese market will account for 14.5% of global spending on electronics this year.

Harmonious Seas
On 23 April, Qingdao played host to the navies of 14 nations, who in a series of processions and joint exercises, flexed their military muscle and showed off new technologies. The event was scheduled to commemorate the founding of the PLA Navy, and its overarching theme was that, "China would never seek hegemony, nor would it turn to arms races with other nations."
Despite the rhetoric, the show appears to have ruffled some feathers - one week later, Vietnam purchased six new diesel powered submarines from Russia, and one month later, Australia published a
$74bn, twenty year plan to beef up its own navy, so that it would be ready to combat a "major power adversary." Image Š cqvip
Playing the field Major Real Estate Purchase Downtown A consortium led by Shanghai Shimao has purchased land covering an area of 240,000m² (or 40 football fields) near Donghai Xi Lu, for just shy of RMB1bn. The developers plan to use the area for residential, retail and office buildings as well as new hotels.
The middle kingdom embarked on further large scale cooperation with south American nations last month, signing into effect a huge $10bn deal to access Brazilian oil over the next decade. Because China's governmentcontrolled banks are willing to extend huge loans for long-term energy security, large deals such as these are possible. The $10bn loan will entitle China to receive up to 200,000 barrels per day, as well as provide engineering technology to the South American state. Chief Executive of Brazil's state-owned
conglomerate Petrobras, Sergio Gabrielli said of making these large deals with China, "There isn't someone in the US that can sit down and have these discussions." In March, China overtook the US as Brazil's biggest trading partner. This is one of many deals struck between China and the nations of South America recently - China's thirst for resources is credited with dampening the effects of the financial crisis in the region. Meanwhile, China sharply reduced its purchase of US bonds through
February and March, an act that prompted Mark Kirk, member of the House Appropriations Committee, to state that, "[They] appear to have, quietly and with deference and politeness, have cancelled America's credit card." Wen Jiabao has recently voiced concern about Chinese investment in the US, even hinting at replacing the Dollar as the standard exchange currency, with a basket of currencies, including the Euro, Yen and Sterling.

Origins of Algae
Village idiot re-invents the wheel
Satellite images revealed that the cause was a rapid expansion of farmed seaweed, that occurred around 200km south of Qingdao, which moved northwards with the tide, growing en route. The initial phases of the bloom were identified by NASA satellites Terra and Aqua, occupying an area of around 80km², located off the coast of Jiangsu Province.
The algal bloom that afflicted Qingdao at the start of the Olympics last summer was not the result of excessive pollution. This was the result of a study, published in the Marine Pollution Bulletin last month.
By the time the algae arrived in Qingdao, it covered 600km² and weighed over one million tonnes - the largest bloom of this kind ever recorded. The particular species of algae is not native to this area, and is farmed, usually to be sold as food. Image © Patrick Wilson Dyer
Emergency fund established The Asian Development Bank's annual meeting concluded that Asian governments must spend more to develop social safety nets and reduce reliance on export-driven economic growth, as a lack of western demand for products has put many Asian economies into free fall. 13 nations including China. Japan, South Korea and the ASEAN states are to set up an emergency fund amounting to $120bn, a scheme dubbed the Chiang Mai Initiative. The smaller Asian states will be able to borrow larger amounts in proportion
to their investments than those more-developed. China and Japan will contribute the lions share, in equal parts totaling $76.8bn. South Korea will also contribute a substantial amount. The ADB warned that 61 million people would remain in extreme poverty this year because of the economic situation, and warned this number could increase to 160 million if slow growth continues next year.
Jon Huntsman, Republican senator for Utah, has extensive experience in Asia, having worked as a mormon missionary in Taiwan, during which period he attained fluency in
Mandarin, and having served briefly as the US's ambassador to Singapore. One of his seven children was adopted from China. Viewed as a progressive and forward-thinking member of the Republican Party, his stances on issues such as same-sex marriages, reforming the health care system and the environment display a willingness to move beyond stereotypical ideologies.
China to Open SE To Foreign Companies The Chinese Government concluded an agreement with Britain that will eventually allow foreign companies to list on the Shanghai Stock Exchange, in an effort to improve China's stock market and the accessibility of the local business environment. The talks, held at the start of May, were led by UK Chancellor Darling and China's VP Wang Qishan. A spokesperson said, "China agrees to allow qualified foreign companies to list on its stock exchange through issuing shares in accordance with relevant prudential regulations," though a time frame for the new regulations has not yet been established.
The US appoints new ambassador to China President Barack Obama backed up his push for bipartisanism in the shadow of the worldwide recession by appointing one of the Republican Party's rising stars as the new ambassador of China.

Obama said at the appointment, "Given the breadth of issues at stake in our relationship with China, this ambassadorship is as important as any in the world, because the US will be best able to deal effectively with global challenges in the 21st century by working in concert with China." Fête De La Musique 21 June
Fête De La Musique is a festival that was established in France in 1982, and since then has blossomed into a cultural celebration that takes place in more than 120 countries. Primarily focussed on live music, the Fete is open to all genres and all levels of musical performance, with the main ideas behind it being spontaneity and free participation. The premise behind Fête was originally suggested on radio station France Musique in 1976, when American musician Joel Cohen pushed for an all-night music festival to mark the moment of the summer solstice. By 1982, the main framework had been established - amateur and professional musicians would be encouraged to perform in the streets, at free concerts to be entirely accessible to the public. The day is unique in providing a single world-wide festival that often has strong local characteristics wherever it is being held. In Qingdao, numerous local acts ranging from Chinese classical to rock n' roll and dance are expected to perform, and there is the tentative possibility that an African percussion group will be making the trip out too. Fête De La Musique is being coordinated by Alliance Française at the Sailing Club, 6 Nanhai Lu. Free admission. Starts early afternoon.
Silk Stockings Lao Sun, a habitual founder of live music venues in two of China's coolest seaside towns (Zhuhai and Shanghai), has been living in Qingdao for nearly a year and only now is he arranging his first event! Silk and Stockings themed, there'll be a wide range of local acts on show including a reggae set from DJ Flip, trance from DJ Sable and techno from DJ Aka, as well as live music from local indie stalwarts Fancy World. 2009 Bar & Nightlife Awards 50 kuai all you can drink at Le Bang. It used to start at 10pm, then by 11 you'd be completely housed. Sometimes you could drink until 12am, but it was rare - by about 11:30, word had spread through enough of the bar that Corner Jazz was calling, and before you could say, "Daft Punk Is Playing At My House!" the entire populace of one bar had relocated to another, almost identical watering hole. Dance moves got sloppy, drinks were more likely to get spilled and 3rd base moved to 2nd but essentially it was exactly the same night. If you felt really lavish you might consider Club New York or Q-Bar, and there was always Jack's and Lennon for quieter times. Two years ago though, that was pretty much it. Then Charlie's Bar sprung up across from hip-hop stalwart Soho, followed a year later by student-friendly LPG and classy Freeman - each vying for their share of QD's party people. While these four battled it out for supremacy, the Chinese music scene suddenly realised that Qingdao was an awesome place to stop over on tour, and a handful of the city's most downplayed venues became makeshift music halls, including The King's Head, Old Church Bar and of course, our very own REDSTAR office. Furthermore, if an eager drinker sought sustenance beyond Hong Kong Gardens, he'd best have his favourite jiu in a hip flask, else he'd fast find himself in no man's land, nothing but kegs on the street to keep the beer jacket from going threadbare. Today we've luxury options like Lateur Laguens to the east, Mamahuhu on top of mountains to the west, quaint Bloody Maries at Snail Bar near the train station and the downright freakish decorum of Taidong's 617 (there were goldfish in the toilets when we were there). And finally, in the Pearl Buck Cafe, a place to sit back and sip Long Islands at No 1 Bathing Beach. So it would seem that Qingdao is ripe for its first annual Bar And Nightlife Awards! Without further ado, here are the categories (actually, these are just a select few, there are 16 online waiting for your votes).
A few of the categories are: ★ Chilling Out In Tsingtao That is, Best Place for a Quiet Drink.
★ Best Live Music Covers or originals, you decide!
★ Best Decor Sleek n' sexy Q-Bar + downplayed Freeman + ambient Room + tribal newbie 88 Bar = tough decision.
★ The Student Award 2009 Keep it simple - where you most enjoy drinking for quantity, not quality!
★ Best Bar Food Once upon a time the only competition would be between the French contingent, La Villa and Le Bang. Then LPG stepped in with bad-ass burritos and burgers. Plus the three newbies to the west, namely Mamahuhu, Old Church and Pearl Buck. Teriyaki Steak with a Leffe sound good to you?
★ Best Place To Watch Sports Qingdao NEEDS a bar to step up and get cable TV, and start getting sports on TV regularly! The World Cup is just a year away... ★ Best Newcomer An exciting category indeed, with LPG, Freeman and Pearl Buck Cafe battling it out for Belle of the Ball. But wait! 88?
... and many more categories online! Vote now at www.redstarpocket.com/awards.html

Qingdao's Best Beaches In no particular order No 3 Bathing Beach 第三海水浴场
No 3 is the kind of beach that warrants discreet lunchtime visits. While some may find it hard to relax with Shandong's tallest buildings reaching ever higher in the distance, it can be comforting to know that the gentle crashing of the waves is always so close at hand. Best after a summertime brunch at Napoli, before an afternoon beer or juice at Cafe Roland, and during a late night stroll with a special someone.
Shilaoren 石老人
Stretching for over a kilometre, Shilaoren is home to ATVs, carnival rides, and perpetual construction. But don't let that keep you away - this beach is big enough for everybody, including the frisbee flingers of FUNQ (Sundays at 2pm!). Best any time it's not foggy, and especially if you have a large number of people who want to kick/ throw something to one another.
Eric Blocher
No 1 Bathing Beach 第一海水浴场
Just south of entertainment complexes Zhongshan Park (中山公园) and Huiquan Square (汇泉广场), No 1 is Qingdao's most populated beach by far. The Beach House and Huiquan Dynasty hotels are nearby, along with a cinema and stadium. If lazing around in the sun isn't exertive enough for you, get a 50元 year-long membership to the weightlifting club near the west end. Best after parties at the Beach House or on weekday mornings when it's empty, or observed from the tower at nearby Xiao Yu Shan (小鱼山).
No 2 Bathing Beach 第二海水浴场
Nestled in the historic Badaguan neighbourhood, No 2 is Qingdao's only beach that charges an admission fee during the high season (2元 in years past). Separated from its fellow bathing beaches
by gorgeous red boulders, this area is the most highly-prized location for wedding photography in Shandong Province. Best enjoyed as part of a sightseeing tour along the boardwalk, with a stop at one of the seafood restaurants and a few minutes at Huashi Villa (花石搂).
Laoshan (Liu Qing He) 流清河
The rustic charm of Shazikou meets Asia's highest coastal mountains along this expanse of sand. Situated in Qingdao's last great fishing village, the beach is convenient to a variety of locallycaught seafood restaurants, and is right next to the ticketing gate for the beautiful Laoshan National Park (崂山风景名胜区). This is an ideal spot for picnics, sand castles, and enjoying the sun. We recommend having transportation arranged for your trip home, as taxis can be scarce in the evening. Best on those days when you really wanted to go to Laoshan, but realised that a beach day was in order.

5 things to enjoy
Sunshine It doesn't just feel amazing and make everything look dreamy. Studies show that short doses of sunshine gradually increase the amount of melanin in your skin, reducing the risk of future overexposure. Even better, sunlight on the skin causes a reaction that turns some cholesterol into Vitamin D, which helps fight depression. Boats At No 1 Bathing Beach, visitors can rent 4-seat rowboats (and vests) for 40元 per hour. If you've ever wanted to push out into Jiaozhou Bay without getting wet, this seems like a great way to do it (provided that it's not terribly windy, wavy, or raining). Jet ski tours of the area are also available, starting at 160元. For the bold, there's even a gocart-powered parafoil that makes laps around the bay for 880元. Shark Nets Designated bathing areas are protected by nets, intended to keep sharks and other charismatic macrofauna away from swimmers. Some barriers have been beefed up in response to 2008's algae emergency.
Tsingtao Beer In a bag, bottle or can, it's hard to believe how good we have it here. Qingdao boasts China's oldest and best brewery, and a beach within fifteen minutes of almost any office. Bring enough to share, or get warm ones from a nearby store and ask to put them in the refrigerator.
5 things to look out for
Kao rou skewers There's nothing like barbecue chuanr by the sea, and many people fail to safely dispose of the thin metal skewers when they're done. For everyone's sake, don't litter on the beach. And watch out when running/jumping/ lunging. Algae blooms In June 2008 a 1200km2 hunk of seaweed lodged against the coast of Qingdao, which might have cancelled the city's Olympic debut had it not been for a massive clean-up effort and unprecedented volunteerism from residents. The green tide is believed to have originated in seaweed farms off Jiangsu Province.
The Scenery From the bridal processions of No 2, to the futuristic skyline of No 3 and the majestic limestone cliffs that ring Liu Qing He, there's a lot more to look at than a watery expanse. Sunsets are particularly impressive.
Sunburn Carrefour, Watson's (inside Sunshine Dept Store) and IGo all have sunscreen available, and some brands do not contain skin-whitening agents. For full cancer-fighting potential, scientists recommend applying sunscreen once 15-30 minutes before sun exposure will begin, and again 15-30 minutes after entering the sunshine. Theft There is no reason to leave your belongings unattended. The shacks that rent umbrellas and other seaside equipment will typically be happy to watch over your bags and shoes while you frolic in the sand, but be sure to ask them nicely. Undertow/Riptides Each summer, emergency medical teams in Qingdao treat dozens of people for drowning, often because the backwash of water flowing out from a steep beach can be strong enough to drag swimmers out to sea. The best thing to do is avoid swimming in areas where waves crash on a steep surface, and in areas where the water looks unusually calm. If you get caught in one of these currents, the best thing to do is hold your breath and do not try to fight it.

NOCSP is offering sailing lessons for all ages and experience levels
Summer school Learn to sail in Qingdao! So far, Qingdao's Sailing City credentials have seemed rather top-heavy: involvement with the phenomenal Clipper Round-the-World and Volvo Ocean Races, hosting the Olympic Sailing Regatta in 2008 and... in the past few years, not much else! There are those fortunate yacht owners who regularly skirt the Chinese coast from Shenzhen, or follow the sunrise to annual events in Korea and Japan, but for most of us it has proven difficult to get involved with this aspect of civic identity. Indeed, several of the Shandong-rĂŠn interviewed on the breakwater at the Olympics said that they would love to learn to sail, if only given the opportunity. Fortunately, the National Organization of Community Sailing Programs (NOCSP) is gearing up to get us out on the water. Partnering with Qingdao International Yacht Club (QIYC) at the site of 2008's Olympic Regatta, NOCSP is offering lessons for all ages and experience levels, all day (9am-sundown) every day. Corporate and group sailing are also available, as are trips along the coast beyond the limits of Jiaozhou Bay. A special 5-day sailing
programme for children will also be available, taught in English, Chinese and French.
This year is the first time that NOCSP programmes will be open to adults.
NOCSP was founded in 2005, bringing coaches the world's sailing capitals to cultivate sailing in China at the grassroots level and working with local boat producers to ensure the availability of well-made, affordable craft. To date, NOCSP coaches have collectively trained over 2000 Chinese children from all socioeconomic backgrounds, holding annual sailing schools in Qingdao, Rizhao, Shanghai, Weihai, Shenzhen and Xiamen.
Coordinator Qiqi Tang, who is entering his third summer with NOCSP, looks forward to the opportunities that 2009 will afford. "I think it is a great thing that more and more people are passionate about sailing in Qingdao," he said. "The Olympic Games and the Volvo Ocean Race certainly gave an excellent kick-off of the city's romance with sailing, but now you'd need local clubs and sailing communities to carry on a steady relationship."
In these past few years, the organisation has encouraged international and cross-cultural exchanges by bringing various international and communities together, using the very best instructional materials for the sport in collaboration with local expertise and language. The quality of the training experience is unparalleled, with instructors who teach to a sailor's ability while looking after her wellbeing and that of the surrounding environment.
Other sailing clubs, including Qingdao International Sailing Club on Nanhai Lu, plan to have courses of their own but had not announced details at time of print. For more information on NOCSP programmes, call Vicky at 136-0896-8946. For Qingdao International Sailing Club, call 8090-5788.

the first cars were not cars per se, but rather limos which would be used for presidential and high level VIP’s
Cars of the Times Big News from the Shanghai Auto Show www.chinacartimes.com
China’s love affair with the automobile may be a recent phenomen, but cars have been in China for over one hundred years to date. The first cars to come to China were brought in by foreigners living in the Shanghai area. Empress Dowager Cixi, (慈 禧) not wanting to be left out of the ‘automotive age’, spent an impressive 10,000 silver taels on importing a Mercedes, a mean machine that screamed at 35bhp; not convertible, just topless. Of course Ci Xi was unable to drive, and she was not expected to be able to drive being the head of a royal family. The task of driving was thus handed over to one of her courtiers, the only problem
being at that time was that nobody else in her immediate circle was able to drive, either. It’s said that her first journey was from Tian'anmen to Yi He Yuan, and that prior to her departure Cixi, excited at her first journey in a horseless carriage, rewarded her driver with a bottle of baijiu. The driver set off with his majesty by his side, but being drunk and at the wheel he quickly caused China’s first recorded drunk driving incident when he ran over, and killed, a eunuch. After the 1910 revolution, China’s domestic automobile industry stalled for a few years, until the ‘Peoples Brand’ started making trucks (a 1.8 tonne truck with a V6 engine that really hauled at 65bhp) for civilian and military use in 1931. The same Shenyang factory was set to produce the Austin 7, but the onset of war with Japan saw the factory turn into a weapons producer practically overnight.
Chairman Mao came to power in 1949, in a country awash with US Military Willys, Jeeps and Soviet trucks. Mao declared that China, with the USA and the Soviet Union, should become an auto producer. He set about having local producers such as BAW (Beijing Auto Works), FAW (First Automobile Works) Changfeng, and Dongfeng build trucks and jeeps for military use. The first automobile was made by FAW and was branded ‘Jie Fang’ or Liberation, a brand that exists today. The first cars were not cars per se, but rather limos which would be used for presidential and high level VIP’s. (There is one example of these cars at the Badaguan Hotel, said to have been used by Deng Xiaoping and other dignitaries on visits to Qingdao.) The '90s then saw an explosion of car makers. China’s largest privately owned car maker, Geely, turned from developing photos, into a motorbike maker, into a car maker practically overnight in Zhejiang. In neigbourhing Anhui, Chery was started to boost the local economy in Wuhu city. Initially started illegally by the city government with some SEAT technology and parts from an old Ford UK engine plant, they grew exponentially and now have sales of over 350,000 cars per year, not bad at all for a company that is barely over ten years old. The state-owned giants like SAIC (Shanghai Automotive Industry Corp) set an important precedent when they purchased the bankrupt British automaker in 2005, in 2009 we are seeing the Chinese takeover of Volvo (and probably Saab) by Chinese automakers.

Auto Shanghai 2009 On Shanghai Auto Show's final Saturday I had the distinct privilege of attending what was without a doubt one of the most crowded exhibitions I have ever visited anywhere. People were wall to wall. Then it struck me: this massive sea of people are all potential customers. It is impossible to put into words the automobile phenomenon in China today. Less than ten years ago the idea of owning a car for personal use was literally a fantasy for the average Chinese middle class consumer. Today this fantasy is becoming a reality for millions upon millions of people. Owning a quality automobile is becoming a required status symbol in modern day life in China. This type of euphoria has long been forgotten by most of the population in the West. Imagine if you will the idea of growing up in the 1930s in the midst of a depression, then in 1945 returning back home and experiencing the economic expansion
which the USA and UK enjoyed. Before the war the idea of owning a car was purely for the ultra-rich. Transportation for the average consumer was limited to trains, buses, trolleys, horses and an occasional bicycle. The USA automobile boom started in the fifties and sixties with new designs and new growth which nobody could have predicted in 1940. In this light foreigners might be able to imagine the economic expansion China began waking from sixteen years ago. The 'Great China Depression’ lasted from 1820 until 1992 when Deng Xiaoping made his trip south advocating Communist capitalism. The China Automobile Boom started in 2004 after President Hu took power. What we are seeing today is just the tip of a huge iceberg. In the history of the US automobile industry history terms you might compare China today with where the USA was in 1953. It

will still be a few years until the Chinese build the equivalent of the ‘57 Chevy. Yes, Chinese automakers are spending a great deal of energy to learn from the experience of others (i.e. copying) but they are also learning very quickly. Western automobile executives should not take comfort when they read about the Rolls Royceclone Geely GE and think China's sole strength lies in its ability to copy someone else's design. More importantly, China has proven extremely adept at lowering the cost of manufacturing when they increase volumes. Chinese companies are already developing their own engineering capabilities and will very quickly develop their own home grown grand slam. When they succeed, they have the abundant potential to do so in terms which will dwarf the success enjoyed by the Model T and the VW Beetle.

Cars to count Great Wall Motors CHC011 - From what we have learned so far, the concept will be carrying a 3.0 V6 paired to a six speed automatic gearbox. Performance is not the only angle which GWM are looking at, safety is also paramount to GWM, and the car will be packed with 8 airbags, ESP, and ABS. The CHC011 appears to have its own style, but does have styling clues from the Merc S-Class, the Jaguar XF, and maybe a hint of the Mondeo around the lights. It does manage its own distinct style, and shows that GWM are growing from being a maker of SUVs and trucks, into a ‘real’ car manufacturer with products that span several market segments.
BYD E6 - BYD's electric multi-purpose vehicle is expected to come online in 2009, boasting 300km per charge (50% in ten minutes), all wheel drive, and a very reasonable sticker price of around 160,000元. VW Santana - The VW Santana is going to be put of production in 2012 according to VW. The Santana, which has made it to the current Santana 3000 guise has sold an impressive 3,213,710 models since the first CKD produced Santana rolled off the line in 1983. China’s love for the Santana has not seen it change radically in all of its years, SAIC-VW even made a their own MPV off the Santana, without VW Germanys knowledge. The MPV never made it to production, but it showed that SAIC did have the engineering know how to make a large MPV years before VW made their VW Sharon.

The new range of engines are expected to be 1.4, 1.5 and 1.6, but yet another internal reshuffle has rendered the 1.5 useless for the time being, with a greater focus aimed at the 1.5 and 1.6. Town Jewels Fashion bling is big business
In January 2009, REDSTAR introduced readers to Qingdao's enormous fashion jewelry industry. As we continue to explore the city's wide-reaching fashion trade, we caught up with jewelry producer Wang Honglin from May-O Jewelry for a producer's perspective on shiny things. Your clients are mainly from the US and Europe, why did you set up in Qingdao? We chose Qingdao as the site for our factory because Qingdao is the largest production centre of the mediumand high-class costume jewelry in the world. It's an enormous geographical advantage to our production costs and human resources.
undertaken by Chinese factories, and most of theraw materials are from China, so we can run every aspect of the business at lower materials and labour costs. This is evident in the fact that more Chinese companies are dealing directly with Western buyers. Chinese factories' shortcomings are not really in production technique - they typically just lack design. How do you make up for the lack of design experience? Our designers are all Chinese university graduates. Many have worked in Korean, American or Hong Kong companies, and exposed to effective creative processes. But there's a huge engineering component as well - every kind of solid material can be used in costume jewelry, plastic, leather, glass or anything, but they cannot simply be put together, so our designers need to be familiar with the physical properties of a broad range of materials.
Also, Korean companies started bringing the jewelry industry into Qingdao in the early '90s, bringing Japanese and European design concepts into play with their own fashion sense. So, now, most of the top brands and leading fashion design products come out of Qingdao. Furthermore, Qingdao is a fashion city, and the local young people are fast becoming a strong demographic for these products. Qingdao is the production centre of high class costume jewelry. We have produced GUESS, CHICOS, PVC and many other top brands.
Do you see any trends emerging in 2009? This year, the jewelry seems to be moving toward instilling a sense of peace, comfort, joviality. People are depressed about the economy and looming disasters, so flowers, stars, these kinds of elements can make people feel better. They are also selecting bright, warm colours.
What advantages do jewelry companies in China have over those in other areas? Korean companies have been involved in trading jewelry for many years, but the production is
Where can people buy your products? We can design jewelry according to client specifications, but our minimum order quantity is 240 units. We are also going to set up our own brand in
the future, which will allow us to sell our own goods through retail outlets. There are hundreds of jewelry manufacturers in Qingdao - what sets your company apart from others? Our product quality is very high, at a standard that few can claim. The big difference though is that our products are lead free and nickel free, and therefore don't carry the health risks that can be associated with these products. Ours won't irritate your skin. We are very responsible to our clients and ultimately to their customers. We want to keep them looking and feeling great for a long time to come.

Class of Your Own Step by step
Susan Socrates
take the time to explain, model, and then let them try for themselves
Lesson plan not working? Don’t ditch it right away. Maybe it just needs another step. When teaching, it’s necessary to make sure information is broken down into bite-sized pieces. These small pieces, like bread crumbs in the forest, can create a path for the students to follow. Leave one out and the students might get lost. Wrong assumptions and cultural differences can keep us from reaching our students, so always begin slowly. Consider the class that was supposed to play a board game I’d created. After giving detailed instructions, I watched as the students ignored the game and began talking in Chinese. Why? Because they’d never played a competition involving rolling dice and moving little pieces around a board. So I stopped everything and got them to roll dice and move around the board with me. An hour later, everyone was so involved in playing the game that none of the students wanted to leave. And to think I’d been about to toss something I’d spent hours creating. Taking the time to first explain, model, and then letting them try for themselves, can make a big difference. This is especially true for a large class. For example, consider a role-play where 'parents' and their 'student child' talk to the school representative. Before putting the four students together, get all the 'mothers' to meet together to talk about what they are going to say in their group. Do this with all the characters first, listening in and perhaps giving them some hints. Now each character will have
some confidence about what they are going to say in the group and the role-plays will go much more smoothly. Before we debate in my class, we have a series of steps that begin with two students discussing a topic, and then arguing opposing sides. We stop, model some useful phrases, and then the two students move to form a group with two other students. Using the same topic, they begin again with a discussion, and finally move on to a debate. They can even move again to form
new groups, getting lots of practice debating a single issue. This is the kind of repetition that can give them confidence. After this exercise they are able to debate any topic that vocabulary permits.
good worker. Add this to the fact that you speak English, and you have something that an employer might be looking for. Now come into the job interview ready to tell me why you are the best person for the job.
A class for practicing a job interview goes like this: What are the qualities of a good friend? Are you a good friend? Then you must have some of these qualities. What are the qualities of a good worker? Aren’t they the same qualities you just told me were the qualities of a good friend? So you must have some qualities of a

Han Philosophy
Confucius becomes state doctrine Peasant rebellions ended the oppressive Qin Dynasty (in 206 BCE). Then eight years of civil war devastated China. In some places, population fell by 70-80 percent. Productive capacity was down. The fledgling Han Dynasty had enormous task if they were to rebuild the country.
There were notable thinkers during this era, as well. Sima Qian wrote the legendary Records of the Historian, a landmark history of China from the Xia Dynasty to the Han. Economist Jia Yi advanced the theory that the nation's strength comes from its agriculture. Things were going well. There was growth and advancement.
The first step was to centralise power. A string of emperors worked at it, trying to pull power away from the regions (some regional princes had even kept their own armies!). The first Han emperor Liu Bang removed many princes and installed relatives (all named Liu) to be princes around the country. He said that the country should all be ruled under one family. It worked, and a stable feudal society emerged.
The Han emperors believed that they had a duty: to unify "all under Heaven" (天下). In doing so, the great Emperor Wu Di gave a ready ear to a certain Confucian named Dong Zhongshu.
The Golden Age of the Western Han occurred during the reign of Emperor Wu Di, the Han Dynasty's fifth emperor. He ruled for 54 years and was at the helm during a great era in China's history. Wu Di saw the beginning of the Silk Road, China's first contact with Rome, annual diplomatic missions to the West, the arrival of Buddhism in China, and improvements in papermaking.
Dong was a theoretician who took Confucian ideas - like the ideas of the three cardinal relationships (ruler/subject, father/son, husband/wife) and then justified them using metaphysical theory. For instance, ruler, father, and husband represented Yang, while subject, son, and wife represented Yin- perfect balance. Then, each of the Confucian virtues had its corollary among the Five Elements. For instance, Benevolence (仁) was related to Wood, Righteousness (义) to Metal, Wisdom (智) to Water, etc. To Dong Zhongshu, it all came together and made perfect sense. However, many (if not most) scholars regard him as a crackpot. His ideas have been described as "strange science," "strange theories," and just plain "incorrect." He reminds me of someone like Rasputin or even Karl Rove, someone who moved behind the scenes, but had secure influence over the thinking of the ruler. As a bona fide Confucian, Dong believed that the emperor received a Mandate of Heaven to keep the human society in proper order.
Gar Kerbel (戴岭)
humans are inherently good... if the emperor is Good, then everything will proceed harmoniously
Like Mengzi, Dong believed that humans are inherently good. He believed that Heaven is inherently good, and that if the emperor is Good, then everything will proceed harmoniously. However, he also followed Mengzi in emphasising the emperor's responsibility to the people. If the ruler did not rule with benevolence, he would lose his Mandate of Heaven. Dong Zhongshu left a giant mark on Chinese culture. He convinced the emperor to make Confucianism the state ideology and to dismiss all non-Confucians from public office. He started the civil service examination system, and was responsible for basing it on the Confucian classics. Indeed, he is one of the most influential Confucians in all of history.

Tokyo!
Directed by Michel Gondry, Leos Carax and Bong Joon-ho
Star Trek
Directed by J.J. Abrams Star Trek is the latest beneficiary of the studios' recent stampede towards 'reboots'. The series could use one: 2002's Nemesis shoehorned the Next Generation crew into slam-bang blockbuster material, but that aging cast was too much to swallow as action heroes, even for viewers accustomed to Holodecks and 9x-light-speed travel. Set in a terrifying future where mankind has lost all knowledge of reduced-glare glassmaking, Trek '09 returns to the 1960s incarnation and repopulates it with freshfaced young'uns: rom-com fixture Chris Pine (Kirk), Heroes' Zachary Quinto (Spock), and Harold & Kumar goofball John Cho (Sulu), among others. This is a prequel as well as a reboot, so Abrams devotes the first act to dry introductory business, prompting much glancing at watches while the old characters are brought in and everyone waits for the inevitable "the name's Uhura" (or whatever). It eases audiences into the new cast, but the 2009 versions are so broadly similar to the originals - with a couple of exceptions, like Simon Pegg's sitcom-castoff Scotty - that the slow reveals feel unnecessary, and keep the movie in drydock far too long. But with those out of the way, Abrams gives his crew a starship and brings back Eric Bana's scenery-chewing Nero, previously glimpsed in the prologue and another addition to Trek's gallery of crazed-but-vaguely-sympathetic supervillains. The rest moves as if it's Abrams' last chance in the director's chair, cramming in time travel, skydives, giant monsters, planetary destruction and the usual space combat. It's so fast that the Enterprise-sized plot holes are noticeable only in retrospect - and so is the jettisoning of the original series' expansive, utopian view of the future, which needs a grander perspective than the contemporised one here (there's even a car chase and a Beastie Boys track). It's the slam-bang blockbuster that Nemesis only aspired to be; now to see if Abrams' ambition can approach his inspiration's. -Josh Martin
Paris, je t'aime revived the moribund city-themed anthology film with its multinational crew of 21 directors (New York, I Love You is coming soon, along with possible follow-ups in Shanghai and Jerusalem). But its limited running time and mandate for love stories didn't allow much breathing room, restrictions that Tokyo!'s more compact trio - two Frenchmen and a Korean - have been thankfully spared. Gondry's opener, Interior Design, centers on a Gondrian filmmaker-manchild before neatly shifting to his girlfriend Hiroko, who strikes out on her own in the eternal postadolescent search for purpose. Hiroko's motivation is disposed of in a single snippet of background conversation, but Gondry's cute visual metaphor (which I won't spoil here) isn't allowed to overstay its welcome, unlike some of his feature-length flights of fancy. Carax follows with Merde, his first major project in a decade. Denis Levant's red-bearded "Mr. Merde" - a foul, incomprehensible "sewer creature" - terrorises Tokyo with various petty outbursts (stealing crutches, eating chrysanthemums) before upgrading to explosive ordnance. The segment flirts with social allegory - Carax clearly has Japanese insularity on his mind - although button-pushing complaints about the shape of Japanese eyes tend to undercut all that. It's Levant's brilliantly physical performance that carries the day, with an illegallyfilmed, Godzilla -mocking traveling shot standing as the film's most memorable moment. Bong's Shaking Tokyo trades Carax's excess for calm, leisurely taking in the life of an antisocial shut-in (hikikomori) before it's disrupted by the pizza delivery girl. Bong gradually exposes his Tokyo as a low-key sci-fi dystopia (extending the genre-bending of Memories of Murder and The Host), and an unconventional save-the-girl climax ends Tokyo!'s trilogy on a high note, getting more woozy romanticism from an unpromising setup than Paris, je t'aime got from the City of Love. -Josh Martin

Maybe Mars Records If you’ve had so much as a peek into the Beijing underground scene you’re likely to have come across this band. They have played shows in Europe with Sonic Youth and Dinosaur Jr. Their self-titled first album came out in September 2007 and serves as a fitting soundtrack to any 21st Century China backdrop. The signature track Zhong Nan Hai is more than six minutes of screaming feedback with a long, guitar-only crescendo belted amongst three short verses: "If you smoke, smoke Zhong Nan Hai - Can’t live without my Zhong Nan Hai - Who stole my Zhong Nan Hai!" The anthem is quickly catching up to Yellow Submarine, Country Roads and Cui Jian’s Nothing to My Name as a staple cover for aspiring rock musicians and, hopefully one day, KTV-ers too. The album’s depth, ranging from poppy, pogohopping promulgations (Track 3 - mushroom 蘑菇) to dark, driving, dissonance (Track 2 – gun 枪) makes it one of the most listenable albums made in China. Frontman Zhang Shouwang is the most celebrated guitarist in China's explosive rock and roll movement, hailed by The New Yorker magazine as "the pride of Beijing's underground." His riffs lend the album its legs, bringing the listener into an inescapable groove that reminds of early post punk, an ambient, soothing quality in spite of crashing distortion. They are currently putting on the finishing touches to their sophomore album which is being produced by the legendary Wharton Tiers (who has worked with Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr. and Gumball to name a few of his legendary collaborators). In the meantime, get these Cars into your playlist. -Marcus Murphy

One Night Only Spinal Tap announce World Tour
Paul Rey-Burns
Spinal Tap are to reunite for a very special world tour... which will consist of one night in London. To mark the 25th anniversary of the release of band's infamous "rockumentary", the aging rockers are to perform at Wembley Arena on 30 June. Guitarist Nigel Tufnell (played by Christopher Guest) said, "If we're going to do a world tour on only one night, at least it's this world". Bassist Derek Smalls (Harry Shearer) added, "One night is not enough, and it's way too much." The Rob Reiner film ‘This Is Spinal Tap’ released in 1984 detailed the band’s ill-fated comeback tour of the US and quickly became a cult classic throughout the world. There has been one album since then (called Break Like the Wind) and a surprise appearance at the 2007 Live Earth concert, but this will be their first full performance in years. There have been rumours that the surviving members of Tap have been in the recording studio, but their spokesman has announced that as they could not come up with any songs, "a new lost album" will be released this summer. Speaking about the reunion, guitarist David St Hubbins (Micheal McKean) claimed that the show was being held as a tribute to "all of our drummers who have passed on, either to their reward or to middle

Other tour news, Kasabian will play at Glastonbury on 27 June as special guests of Bruce Springsteen who managed to persuade the Leicester band to play their only reported festival appearance this year. As previously reported, the band will embark on a mammoth twenty date headline tour in June and July, taking in three nights at their hometown venue of Leicester De Montford Hall. Kasabian are also set to release their third album, West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum, on 8 June. Meanwhile Green Day have
announced a tour of the UK this October. The American punks, who released their eighth studio album 21st Century Breakdown on 15 May, will promote its release with an eight-date arena tour. The band reckon their UK tour dates could last as long as 4 hours! Frontman Billie Joe Armstrong told Rolling Stone that their tour in support of their new album will feature shows that could last "anywhere from two to four hours long. We want to give Springsteen a run for his money.
"I think his longest show is maybe five hours, I think Green Day's got six!" The band - currently celebrating a UK No. 1 album - are playing two nights at the 02 Arena, London on 23 and 24 October.

Foreign Corrupt Practices Act Implications for U.S. Businesses in China
Hank Bourg
'Foreign official' is broadly defined by FCPA. Anyone working for a government-owned or managed institution or enterprise (including doctors, lawyers and accountants) is considered a foreign official. Any business person that also serves a foreign governmental agency is a foreign official. Also, employees of international organisations are also considered to be foreign officials under the FCPA. Any U.S. business operating in China must pay particular attention to this broad definition as many Chinese business people are also government officials. Ignorance of the person’s status does not provide exemption from prosecution for a violation of the act. It does not matter whether there is an existing business relationship with the foreign official. So an offer of value to acquire business or to prevent the loss of business is covered by the act.
The 1988 Trade Act by the Congress of the United States directed the U.S. Attorney General to provide guidance to potential exporters and small business regarding the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act of 1977, an act all U.S. businesses operating in China need to be familiar with. The FCPA prohibits the 'corrupt' payment of money or bribes to foreign officials for the purpose of keeping or maintaining business. The FCPA also links in with several other U.S. acts, providing for federal prosecution of violations of state commercial bribery statutes. The FCPA requires U.S. listed companies to meet their accounting provisions, which are designed to operate in parallel with the anti-bribery provisions of the FCPA and require corporations to make and keep books and records that accurately
FCPA prohibits 'corrupt' payment of money or bribes to foreign officials and fairly reflect the transactions of the corporation and to devise and maintain an adequate system of internal accounting controls. A potential violation of the FCPA would include the following elements: An act by a covered person; An offer to give something of value; To a foreign official ; To obtain or retain business; With corrupt intent.
There are two categories of 'persons' under the FCPA: issuers and domestic concerns. An issuer is a basically a listed company that has filing requirements with the Securities Exchange Commission – the enforcing agent with respect to FCPA for issuers. A domestic concern is an individual or any form of business organisation not registered with the SEC. The U.S. Department of Justice has enforcement responsibility with respect to domestic concerns. With respect to an offer to give something of value, keep in mind there is no materiality to this act. It is illegal to offer anything of value as a bribe, including cash or non-cash items. The government focuses on the intent of the bribery rather than on the amount.
Corrupt intent encompasses the notion of a benefit given or offered to persuade a foreign official to misuse their position or authority through action or inaction and it includes quid pro quo arrangements. Quid pro quo generally assumes the benefit is given with reasonable expectations of some official favour in return. The quid pro quo does not need to have been executed nor does the foreign official need not be able to deliver it themselves. Again, note that the U.S. government does not need to establish the defendant knew their conduct violated the FCPA. A hotel, cafe and bar opposite Beach Number One, with community focussed management and affordable prices all round, The Beach House is poised to be a very cool addition to seaside revelry this summer. A modestly sized property, with just short of 70 rooms, the former Longjia Binguan has recently been taken over and re-branded by the same people that made the Observatory Youth Hostel such a cool place, and they have wasted no time in applying the same downplayed and relaxed charm here. Something to note about the Huiquan Square area is that much of the property here was built in the mid-late 90s, at around the same time that Qingdao's City Government moved to its current location at May 4th Square. This shifted investment away from the west of Qingdao, and is one of the reasons why, for all its beauty, that there is little going on there by way of bars and restaurants. Thankfully, two of The Beach House's best attractions are its social areas. On its ground floor, The Pearl Buck Cafe is an open-planned and very welcoming spot, convenient for capping off a day at the beach with a cocktail or coffee. And they are very, very good at cocktails, having snagged a barman formerly of Lan Club and Shangri La Beijing. There's a wide range of western and eastern dining options, including an all day breakfast and a salubrious Thai soup. But for all the quaint charm of the underdone, bistro-style joint downstairs, its
The Beach House Pearl Buck Cafe the view from the top that makes The Beach House such a great place to enjoy the summer nights. The upper decking area will be made into a bar in time for the summer, and from here you can see all the way from Badaguan in the east to Xiao Yu Shan in the west. Its rooms are standard, but the hotel makes no claims to being anything other than budget, and double rooms are available for very reasonable rates. Its spacious rooftop suites have kingsize beds and even larger floor-to-ceiling windows - perfect for enjoying the view. However, it is the management's attitude to community that is the most commendable aspect of this establishment - they've quickly forged close ties with The Book Nook, who provide their English language books to travelling guests, with local tour operators Qingdao Shanshui and sailing instructors NOCSP. In addition they make affordable accommodation available to travelling musicians, even hosting Ziyo in a fantastic rooftop gig in April. Most notable is their cooperation with nationwide art universities. Shortly after opening, the hotel donated rooms to over 100 students from Dalian, who spent their time in Qingdao creating artworks of famous landmarks around town. The Beach House bought a number of these paintings from the students and has plans to exhibit them, making them available for purchase in the future. The Beach House will have a Grand Opening Cocktail Party on 12 June. Everyone's invited!
The Beach House is quickly becoming the venue of choice for bands coming to Qingdao on tour, we caught up with the most recent arrivals to ask what they thought... Kang Mao - The Subs "The room was big and comfortable. Staff very good. I liked all the posters on the wall. It's not so much like a hotel as a youth hostel. Very warm and easy. But the cotton on the bed sheets was itchy, but maybe it's because it was new. The potato cake wasn't bad." Helen - Ziyo "The hotel was very simple, but it was compensated for the uniqueness of the rooms we had at the top floor. It definitely has character and I have a feeling it attracts a pretty chill crowd. Not for the business travel types. Despite some rock star behaviour in the form of breaking furniture, the staff didn't give us any trouble which was nice. Great location." Jim - Zhaoze "We all stayed on the second floor. Even from there the view was great! The pics along the wall were interesting and the service there was good, too. If they had an elevator for our instruments, that would be perfect!" Dora - PB33's manager "Service good! And the scenery is cool, I could see the sea from my room, it's amazing."

But then... maybe it was the beautiful people I saw lined out the door, the beats I heard as I passed on my weekend rounds between Le Bang and Freeman. Or maybe it was the fact that everyone in town who likes clubs had been raving about it for months. I had to find out for myself. I finally gave in, walked past the greeters at the door and took the plunge. Harder better faster stronger, just like the Daft Punk song. The biggest impact on me came from the sound system. Predictably, it was the very first thing that drew my attention. It penetrates you, it's everywhere and accomplishes something that I always thought would be impossible to accomplish in Qingdao: you can still kind of carry on a conversation. It's a world of difference from other Qingdao clubs where you literaly have to yell into somebody's ear. Bass, treble, it's all there, you can even hear that cool sizzling that's really hard to get. Then it came to lights, and here the job was A-grade! Their light people know what they're doing. It's never too dark and it's always there when you want it to be, when you're looking at the DJ with your hands up high in the air.
Filip Wojtynski Photos Š Eric Blocher
everyone in town who likes clubs has been raving about it
Which would lead me to another point: Music. Mainly Hip-hop, pleasurably mixed with some rock and club/house music. There are three DJs and four singers who will make you sing a lot, so remember to water your throat all the time. I must confess that the lady DJ is my favourite, and not only because of the tunes. At Qingdao bars, staff and service are often a challenge. 88 shines here too. Still, it can be a little bit stunning when the bill comes. Of course I expect to pay for my drinks, but when a bottle of Remy Martin XO with few bottles of black tea sets you back a grand, you want to be sure to make the most of the experience. Here, that means digging the music, grooving in the aisles, hanging with lots and lots of beautiful people and appreciating the best thing to happen to Qingdao's club scene in years. You get what you pay for and then some. Before long, you'll find yourself singing 'Take Me Home (Country Road)' at 1am with three hundred new friends.

Qingdao’s Central Business District (CBD) encompasses much of the city’s most valuable real estate, stretching along the coast of Jiaozhou Bay (site of the XXIX Olympic Sailing Regatta in 2008) in either direction from the Municipal Government building and May 4th Square. Hong Kong Road, built in 1997 and named in honour of Hong Kong’s return to Chinese authority in that year, runs through the centre of the area and serves as the major artery of commerce in the city. INHUANGDAO
Easy Rider 2 Gar Kerbel 戴岭
It was once reported [here, in this very column] that there were, not one, but TWO classic Huangdao motorcycle rides. But that column only spoke of the peninsula run. Let's get the job done and talk about that second one. It takes you clockwise all the way around Xiaozhu Shan and begins at Lingshanwei. You cruise past Huanghai College, swerving around the assorted bedlam, and then it's tall trees for about 15 minutes of back roads. You're just driving around the mountain, so keep it in view, and turn at the appropriate time. As you make it around the southern end of the mountain, just for you is a slice of Heaven. It's right there. Anyone can use it. You'll never be able to have it all, and it'll still be there for you next time. This is a perfect stretch of meandering pavement running right at the foot of the mountain. It's a goldmine stretch of road. The bends in the road forbid going too fast, but really it just feels too good when you take it slow. To your right, the mountain looms high. A series of ridges descend towards you. In truth, the area is so gorgeous that it all ought to be preserved as a national park. Rolling fields, terraced hills, and a river.... all beneath the mountain and its foothills. Ahhh... After you pass the main flank of the mountain, the road goes up and takes a hairpin turn left, then another hairpin turn right as you ascend into a tight village. Continue through it. This ends phase one of the ride. Phase two gives you a more mysterious feeling. You aren't struck by as much natural beauty, yet you travel into more remote areas. Frankly, there is no clear way to give directions through this part. Just follow around the mountain. Keep turning right. You break onto some long, tree-lined back roads, and suddenly you find what looks like a mini Forbidden City. Oddly enough, it is a film studio for shooting scenes in ancient China. From that point, you come to the gate of the Xiaozhushan National Park (one of two "official" entrances to the mountain). From there, you are on the straight and flat. You can just lose yourself in the rhythm of the road while you make your way back to the Kaifaqu side. First you come out near the Haier/Aucma factory area. At that point, you are back to reality.... with about 20 more minutes back to Kaifaqu.
