China and Japan Should Cooperate to Boost Free-Trade System: Abe China and Japan should cooperate with each other to strengthen the free-trade system, Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said on Tuesday. Abe made the remark in a written reply to Chinese media before his visit to Beijing on Thursday. "It is of great significance to strengthen the current economic order based on rules of freedom and justice," Abe said, adding that adopting trade restrictions would not benefit any party.

Rain Could Hinder Search for Victims of California Wildfire, Raises Flash Flood Fears The search for remains of victims of the devastating Northern California wildfire has taken on new urgency as rain in the forecast could complicate those efforts while also bringing relief to firefighters on the front lines. Up to 400 people fanned out on Sunday to search the ash and rubble where homes once stood before flames roared through the Sierra foothills town of Paradise and surrounding communities, killing at least 77 people in the deadliest US wildfire in a century.

MEET THE LOCALS By Annie Clover
What can’t you live without?
I cannot start my day without a cup of coffee. So, the first thing I do after getting out of bed is put on the first thing I see and head to the nearest coffee shop. Most of my favorite branches are all around the West Lake, which is is great because after I get hold of a coffee, I can sit on a bench next to the lake and search for some inspiration.
Where is your favourite night spot right now?
My favourite night spot right now is Carbon (BeiShan Road) – I love their food, service and the cool vibes. My favourite thing is the fact you can see the West Lake from their terrace area. It is a great place to rest your brain, and in the Winter has a cozy, comfortable feeling. Soft, relaxing sofas and chairs with Jazz music in the background - a nice place to spend some time away from the noise!
What food / drink are enjoying right now?
I mostly like white wine, but regret it the next morning when I have a hangover! For me if I go for Western food my favorite is Slim’s. However, they recently closed their branch on NanShan Road so now I have to go to BinJiang to enjoy it, which is quite far from me. For Chinese food my favourite is 新白鹿 (xīnbaílù
Where do you like spending time?
The place I most enjoy spending my time has to be the West Lake – not the lake itself, but the Tea Fields nearby. I really like hiking and try to avoid crowded places as much as possible. Right now, I go to Eudora quite often, not just for the food but also to see the band. There is much more fun to be had than going out just for drinks and food – enjoy some live music too!
Where is your favourite place to eat?
My favorite place is Wade’s Bar and Restaurant. Not only because of the live music, I just really love their big burgers with a huge glass of Hoegaarden! Also, the WuLin branch is pretty easy to get to, even by subway. If we are not only talking about Western food then I must say I adore street barbecue: lots of different herbs and spices like cumin and a big selection of meat and veg.
Where do you like going out to?
If I consider going out for fun, I would probably choose one of the Jam Nights such as Eudora on a Tuesday or 9bar on a Monday. I am not a very big fan of clubs and loud music – I am more of a ‘classy’ guy. When the weather is nice me and my friends usually go to LinAn Lake. The landscape and scenery there are beautiful: pine trees and a sky-blue lake great for fishing and swimming in with friends.

few years ago, my country was going through difficult times: the economy was in a bad way, a lot of companies were closing and many people had lost their jobs. Then, one day I got the opportunity to come to China to work. I escaped the rain, and I went to China in search of my ‘sunshine’ - and I found it! This was the beginning of an incredible adventure in the East. I was born and bred in Mallorca, a beautiful island in the Mediterranean Sea, famous for its breath-taking landscapes, crystal clear water and vibrant wildlife. Growing up there gave me lifelong love, appreciation and respect for nature. You can see a lot in my photography the element of nature,
sometimes in how it juxtaposes the rapid development that we see so often in China. Mallorca is a very small place; the rhythm of life is slow, and people are very open and friendly even with complete strangers. The way people get along with each other is very natural and that is something I always look for and appreciate, no matter where I go. While China is a vast country with a fast pace of life (something I enjoy about living here), it surprised me how warm and friendly Chinese people are. This hospitality combined with the spectacularly diverse landscapes, wildlife and nature across the country has profoundly influenced my work over the last few years.
// FEATURES /
So far, I have enjoyed my experiences in China very much and hope they continue! Photography has been my job and passion for more than 12 years and it is the way I express myself and share how I see the world. I always try to remain innovative and push creative boundaries in my work and hope that is something that can always be seen in my pictures. As the poem says, “It is half sunny and half rainy”. Even when it’s rainy, there is always a sunny side - we just need to find it. Next time you see dark clouds, don’t let them influence you, but think of the sunshine that is waiting to appear. Make sure you are ready for it!

v This picture was taken in LiShui, not far from Hangzhou, which won me first prize in a photography competition. I was walking around taking pictures, and unknowingly wandered into someone’s house. However, no one seemed to mind – they just looked and said “Oh, there’s a foreigner in our kitchen” and laughed.

Get started: First download the app from your app store of choosing. Then you create your account choosing a username and password. You will be asked for your phone number to verify your account and finally you will be able to set your profile picture. Find and add friends Finding friends is easier than ever with WeChat, except for scanning a QR-Code or importing the contacts from your phone you can also: 1. Shake and people nearby function: you can find friends nearby by shaking your phone or choosing “people nearby”. To do it look for the button (discover icon) and select one of the two options and see who is around you. 2. The friend radar: this is the quickest way if you want to add a big group of friends at once instead of adding their contacts one by one. All you should do is click on (+ icon) then select “add friends” and finally open the “Friends radar”, click on the profile picture of your new friends to add them. Remember that everyone in the group need to open the radar to be visible and be added! 3. Phone number or WeChat ID: This is the most traditional way but is useful when you only have a phone number or the WeChat ID*. Just click (+ icon), select “add friends” and type on the space above.
// FEATURES /
Tips and tricks for friends’ requests • The unknown friend request, the horror of every social network user, if you are not sure who is trying to befriend you, it is possible to use the "anonymous" chat without accepting the friend request. • Once you found your friends and your contact list is becoming a mess you can filter your friends by setting a remark or a tag in the “option panel”. You can even change their name (which is only visible on your phone) in case your friend has an unpronounceable name or you just would like to have a friend called "Nick the Ghost Rider". • If you are wondering where all your contacts came from, whether it was a third person sharing your contact card or from a group WeChat will show it to you. You can find out just opening the chat, click on your friends’ profile picture and once it will display the contact card select “more”. WeChat Search While most people use Baidu or Bing in China, WeChat also has a search engine built in but if you're trying to find something on WeChat groups, accept nothing else! Hack and tricks for WeChat search engine • If you are looking so information about what is happening around you we recommend you just to digit the name of the city and add few words to describe
what are you looking for (i.e. news, events…). • If you are looking for a job or an internship in China WeChat Search is the perfect tool. Many companies and job agencies post weekly job openings with their official accounts. • Once you have found an article or the information you need, you can save it for later by marking it as "favorite" and find it anytime in the “favorite” folder. WeChat Pay WeChat’s greatest highlight is probably the pay function. Even though many options are only available in Chinese, foreigners as well find it very easy and indispensable once you arrive in China. No matters where you are either super market, taxi or restaurant, whenever it comes to pay you will always see the WeChat QR. How does it work? First, you need a Chinese bank account, once you got your card you can just add it on your WeChat “Wallet”. Once your card is linked to your account you have multiple choices to start spending money. You can charge you phone, paying the next lunch at the restaurant and much more. You can always keep track of your balance and check all the transactions. Some apps such as DiDi even have a WeChat integration, allowing you to pay straight from WeChat.

DianPing While only only available in Mandarin, DianPing is the go to app for those wanting to know whether a restaurant is worth going to. Comparable to Yelp, DianPing isn't limited to restaurants but includes bars, hotels, beauty salons, gyms and many more. On DianPing you will find reviews, ideas, offers and lots of pictures about places around you. If you ever wondered why everyone seems to be taking photos in restaurants, this is where these photos end up. While the reviews might not be helpful if you can't read Chinese but the pictures, prices, and contact information will take you a long way if you are looking for the perfect place to go to. How to DianPing You can either download the app or visit the website. Both are very similar and easy to use, also for the non-Chinese speakers. On the website, you will see the main navigation board with the search option and there you can enter the name of the restaurant, spa, or gym you are aiming to go to or just select a category if you are not sure about your destination yet. Once you found what you are looking for you will first see the main picture and others, which are directly uploaded by the
users. Normally they tend to share as much as possible so after a quick look you will already know what you are going to eat for lunch and how much will it cost. If information about the business you are looking for is all what you need then you only have to select” more information” ( 更 多信息 ) and there you find opening times, description of the atmosphere and also the average price and in some cases, you can even make a reservation.
Didi If you have noticed people standing on the street while starring at their phone they are most likely waiting for a Didi. The Didi App is similar to Uber and is the easiest way for a foreigner to travel around the city, especially because now it is available in English. You can either download the app or just used the integrated version in your WeChat wallet. Once you have done so you must create your profile which is quickly done if you have a Chinese phone number. How to Didi Once you know your destination just type or paste the Chinese address in the navigation board and you will be requested to choose between a shared cab or a private one. Normally there is a small difference but if you are in a hurry we recommend you to choose the private version. After that, if you are lucky, within one minute you will get your Didi driver. From the app, you will be able to track his position and see the color and the number of the car. Normally they will try to call you but in case you don’t speak any Chinese you can just paste this message: 你好司机,我是外国人,我的中文不好。 我 正在 ... 等你 (name of the place where you are waiting)。 很快见! 如果有任何问题, 请给我发短信 .
Which means: hello driver, I am a foreigner and my Chinese is not good. I am waiting for you at (name of the place where you are waiting). see you soon! if there is any problem, please send me a text message. If you are coming from far away, for instance Huangdao, then we suggest you to use the pooled car option, which you can select
16
redstarhangzhou.com
from the navigation board. In this case you basically post your location, destination, and arrival time as well as number of people who are joining you. Normally you should post at least 20-30 min earlier and the wait until any driver going in the same direction will accept your offer. If you notice someone interesting you can get noticed by sending a red pocket and be able to chat with the driver. This option might be a bit confusing for nonChinese speaker because it is not available in English, but is worth it for example if you are travelling from Downtown to Huangdao (Petroleum University) which usually costs around 30 yuan and you won’t be charged for the Tunnel fee. For both of the options you can always pay by WeChat or Alipay (normally the drivers don’t accept cash) and the fee will be charged latest by the time you order the next Didi.

A PEACEFUL AFTERNOON IN
MEI JIA WU VILLAGE By Annie Clover

hen you think of China, one of the first things that is likely to cross your mind is Chinese Tea. One of the most famous of these teas is named ‘LongJing’ Tea, which literally translates to ‘Dragon Well’ Tea. Just West of Hangzhou’s touristic (and almost always crowded) West Lake, is a peaceful tea plantation where the leaves for LongJing Tea are grown, right around the corner from the quaint village of MeiJiaWu. Everything about this place revolves around the growing, preparing, and drinking of tea. If you come during the month of January, you may even be lucky enough to see the unique beauty of tea trees in full blossom.

You can get to MeiJiaWu by public transport using any of the following bus routes:
Another of the more famous attractions of MeiJiaWu Village is one of its oldest residents, an 80-year-old man known by the locals as the ‘grandpa’ of the village. Always dressed in traditional Chinese clothing, he welcomes visitors in to the village with a warm smile. Follow his friendly face and long silver beard a little further and you may find yourself sitting in his restaurant, where you can try some of the local delicacies, as well as a cup of freshly-picked LongJing Tea to wash them down.
After lunch, make sure you stop by the tea fields to see how the best leaves are picked to ensure the high standards that surround LongJing Tea are met. Only the top part of the plant, the baby leaves, are selected, then roasted immediately to prevent natural oxidation.
different types of teas. As for the taste, LongJing Tea has very mild flavour with a little sweetness, a unique fragrance and a pleasant flowery aftertaste. If you are interested in knowing more, ask one of the villagers to share with you the legend of Long Jing or Dragon Well Tea.
The result is a natural tea rich in vitamin C as well as amino acids. LongJing Tea leaves are unfermented and have the highest concentration of catechins (an anti-oxidant) among all the many
So next time city life gets a bit too much for you, escape to the nearby village of MeiJiaWu and enjoy a peaceful afternoon sipping tea and taking in the green surroundings!

Experiences of Cambodia: The Khmer Arts Suki Li shares her thoughts and discoveries.

T
ravelling in Cambodia gives you complex feelings. It’s a paradise island for tourists to explore and enjoy, but is arguably most famous for its heartbreaking history. Landmine victims across the country, begging for a living and struggling with their lives, are continuous reminders of a miserable past, and you can't help questioning yourself: is it wrong to pursue art and enjoyment here? Joseph Mussomeli, the former U.S. Ambassador, once said “Be careful, because Cambodia is the most dangerous place you will ever visit. You will fall in love with it, and eventually it will break your heart." My art-filled journey from Siem Reap to Phnom Penh was indeed a trip beginning with fantasy and ending with deep sorrow. The sunrise and sunset in Angkor Angkor Wat is where the heart of the great Khmer empire once beat vibrantly, and today represents both its glory and its downfall. Thousands of smiling faces can be found in the stone remains. These faces, after seeing all the blood and wars, the massacres in both the 15th and 20th centuries, continue to smile. I wondered, do they also cry? Do their smiles really indicate a kind of realisation? What is it that has given these happy faces their endurance? You may find the answer in the sunrise. The Khmer architects knew and used sunlight expertly, seen particularly in the sunrise at Bayon, where over a hundred smiles on forty-nine pagodas appear in the dawn one after another. When the three major pagodas of Angkor Wat–which you can also find on Cambodia’s national flag–are being lit, it feels as if the Khmer empire is resurrected. They can’t have imagined that their

Plan a sunset at Neak Pean. This place is more a construction of space than of a building. It creates emptiness instead of existence. Just like the Chinese character for Buddha 佛 signifies nonbeing: the right hand side means “not”, and the left side means “man/person”. 720 years ago, in August 1296, when Angkor was said to have been one of the largest and wealthiest metropolises of Southeast Asia, Zhou Daguan of a Chinese legation reached the Khmer capital and remained there for nearly a year during the reign of King Indravarman III (1295-
1308). He wrote a book called "The Customs of Cambodia”, an insight into the world of 13th century Angkor. He mentions the dead: "No coffins are used for the dead; they are laid out on straw matting and covered over with cloth." Compared to the Egyptians, for example, Khmer people recognised the value of letting go. In search of the living goddesses in theatres The Cambodian Living Arts in Phnom Penh allows you to meet the ‘living goddesses’. Here the Hindu goddesses (Apsara) sculptures dancing on the walls of Angkor Wat are brought to life in the theatre. During the dance, their fingers blossom like petals. When these blossoms of fingers are placed in front of their waists (you can always see this in the sculptures), it indicates the origin of life. When their fingers point down, it indicates the withering of flowers. Each elegant movement expresses the tolerance and peacefulness of Cambodian beliefs. The unbearable heaviness of art

In the Tuol Sleng Museum in Phnom Penh, I saw the works of Cambodian artist Vann Nath. Tuol Sleng was once a high school where students' laughter filled the
corridors. In 1975, the Khmer Rouge turned it into a secret prison (S-21) where more than 14,000 men, women and children were tortured and executed. Vann Nath is one of only a handful of people who survived. He was beaten, tortured and almost starved to death, but thanks to his prior training as an artist, he was not killed: instead he was put to work painting portraits of Pol Pot, the leader of the regime’s experiment in radical Maoism. When Vietnamese troops entered the capital city in January 1979, toppling the Khmer Rouge regime, Vann Nath escaped. Later that year, when a Genocide Museum was created on the grounds of the former prison, Vann Nath went to work there, and painted scenes of prison life under the Khmer Rouge. These paintings are nothing like the art in Angkor. They are not beautiful at all. They are too heavy to enjoy looking at. But art never only has goddesses and angels, it also confronts evil. These paintings are so painful and powerful. Just as happiness doesn't always last, neither does pain. If Siem Reap showed me the decline of a great empire, I hope Phnom Penh shows the hope of a rising nation. The Khmer smiles come up in my mind again. One of the goddesses said: this is what we call the causal loop.

A ROAD OF INNOVATION, STARTUPS, & COMMUNITY By The NiHub Team
W
hen it comes to innovation, here at nihub Innovation Center we like to think we know a thing or two. If you asked for our two cents on the topic, we'd say innovation is everywhere. With that said, of course, some places tend to support it more than others. For us, China(particularly Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province) was a clear winner when it came to choosing a place where innovation is not only thriving naturally, but is also strongly supported by both local and international players.
26
redstarhangzhou.com
Thus we created nihub Innovation Center, with the aim to help foreign startups and innovators scale their businesses in China. Simple. Or so it may seem at least. When it comes down to it though, innovation is a tough and rocky road. Today, we want to take you all on a quick trip down that road to illustrate exactly how an innovation center works to facilitate innovation, scale projects, and create an ecosystem around entrepreneurship.
We mentioned last time about our slogan, it's all about ni. This is indeed due to the obvious fact that without the lot of you there would be no innovation to facilitate or scale.
广告 • 商务
The problem that so many would-be entrepreneurs face is that innovation is not inherently profitable, nor oriented to a feasible business model. This is where we come in. Through a variety of workshops, training courses, and collaborations, nihub works day in and out to facilitate creators in their founding from concept and project to startup and registered business. How many times a day do you hear the word "startup?" At least in China, we're sure it's at least in the double digits. The world is full of hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of startups and eager entrepreneurs
attempting to go from startup to scale-up. Our main priority at nihub is the help with this process. To take Company X from a Dutch, German, British, or American startup, to a Chinese (and global) company. By means of investment procurement via local VCs and funds and operational services, your startup today can make the fundamental transition from startup to scale-up in the blink of an eye. So you've perfected your business model, raised funding, grown your team, and marketed your business. What now? As a scale-up company, the worries that
// BUSINESS /
once troubled you as a startup are far from over. Many companies go on to receive investment and never make returns. At nihub, we believe amongst all the necessities to create, develop, and maintain a thriving business, there's something that stands out above the rest: an ecosystem. A community of support networks, influence, and partners all working together towards each others success. Through consistent community networking, foreign delegations & ecosystem visits, corporate innovation projects, and government meetups & keynotes, working to build a community and ecosystem around innovation is perhaps the single most important necessity for startups to scale-up and succeed, especially in a foreign market.

Bei Sha Shen 北沙参
For a foreigner, Traditional Chinese Medicine can seem a daunting subject: part art, part science. In order to de-mystify the topic, with the help of Fu Hai Tang 福海堂 Jordan Coates has brought together some of the most common Chinese herbs. After reading a little about how they are used and what benefits they can bring, hopefully you will have the courage to go out and try some for yourself.
Bei Sha Shen 北沙参 Glehnia Root
Nan Xing 南杏 Chinese Southern Almond
There are two types of Sha Shen- Bei (North) and Nan (South). Thriving in cooler climates, Bei Sha Shen grows widely across Northern China and Inner Mongolia and is more commonly used than its southern counterpart. This root should be cooked in boiling water to make tea or soup, which can then be drunk. Among the effects, it is used to moisten the lungs and ease a sore throat.
Traditionally, Chinese almonds are classified into two types: southern ( 南杏 ) and northern ( 北杏 ). While southern kernels are sweet and therefore used in cookery, the northern variety has a more bitter taste and is a common component in Chinese medicine. A traditional dessert made with the southern variety is almond tofu, which helps the lungs and can relieve coughing.
Chen Pi 陈皮 Dried Tangerine Peel Chen Pi is sun-dried tangerine peel, which has a lengthy history within Chinese medicine. Interestingly, the peel is often aged for a stronger effect (the sample picture is 20 years old). Its use can aid the spleen and stomach, by regulating one’s ‘Qi’, or life energy.

Ban Lan Gen 板蓝根 Isatis Root
Huang Qi 黄芪 Astragalus
Tao Jiao 桃胶 Peach Gum
A component of Chinese Medicine for over two thousand years, Ban Lan Gen is used widely across Chinese households to combat the common cold and other sinus infections. It is often made into a tea with Jin Yin Hua (honeysuckle) to improve the effect.
This herb is well known for its ability to boost the immune system and fight fatigue. For those feeling run down, a warming cup of astragalus tea can go a long way to help, by providing a revitalising energy lift. This immunity-boosting beverage can be had all year round and could make a good substitute for your morning coffee.
Tao Jiao is also known as ‘teardrops of the peach tree’, since it’s made from resin secreted from the peach tree. First you need to soak the crystals in water, so they soften and expand into a jelly-like substance. Since the resin itself is tasteless, various ingredients can then be added, such as milk, goji berries, honey, and dates, to make a variety of nourishing desserts. As peach gum contains collagen, which firms and rejuvenates your skin, these desserts are an excellent skin tonic for reducing wrinkles.
Zhi Zi 栀子 Cape Jasmine Cape Jasmine is considered cooling in nature and serves to reduce fevers by cooling down blood temperature. Zhi Zi is often made into a tea for direct consumption, and can be combined with other herbs to make an enriching natural detox.

Yu Zhu 玉竹 Solomon’s Seal Rhizome With a taste similar to bamboo shoots, Yu Zhu can be cooked like a vegetable, and combined with other ingredients in soups and broths. This herb is known to cure dryness in the lungs and strengthen the stomach.

Poem OF THE MONTH
JUST A HUNDRED Was talking to my guy the other day Debating on this life and how we get by Chasing these dreams In the sun Hoping our eyes don’t give out Before our times do That the lives we’re chasing One day become a reality As we find ourselves asking why Doing what we can to get by When you find yourself being The guy everyone knows To always be looking for a yi bai Because it takes 1 hundred To get you from a to b It’s plain to see
This life it be filled with highs and lows something like ecstasy But all I need is 1 hundred Because I’m hungry Insatiable appetite for a feast I am yet to reach Is it cool for me to pretend? Jumping around Like a headless chicken I swear the way we chase This red money You’d think something Within us is broken But who am I to speak When I find it hard to say With no hesita-tion The means to which it comes to me
By Brine Taz
So can you lend something To keep me float, Help me get by, All I need is a yi bai (100)

The Environment: Friend or Foe? Tips for Breathing Pure Air Working with Design in Mind
HANGZHOU FAMILY
The Environment, a Friend or a Foe?
by Adina 邱天美
As soon as people hear the word "environment", the first thing they usually think about is pollution or the lack of clean air, especially in China. However, as an environmental psychologist, I tend to understand the environment as the space we are in and the people that we are surrounded by at a given time. With this in mind, our home, school, workplace etc are all environments that influence our behavior more than we are aware of.
who are currently studying English. Many people think that studying a language is very hard, but the space we decide to study in has a very big impact on our study outcomes. As a matter of fact, a proper physical environment can increase learning outcomes up to 25%, thus next time you face difficulties learning English, just take a closer look at the space you are in. What environmental factors should you look at?
If it's the first time you hear about environmental psychology, no worries! You are not the only one. Very few people are actually aware of this broad, yet very important field. In simple words, environmental psychology looks at how our behavior influences and is influenced by space. In other words, everything we do is space related, whether we do it alone or with others, thus the space and the people around us will influence our behavior. Starting from this idea, we can separate the environment into two parts: physical (space) and social (people). Environmental psychology has broad implications, but for the sake of clarity, in this article I will focus on the physical learning environment to emphasize its influence on our learning outcomes, more specifically in relation to language learning, given the amount of Chinese people

Furniture Sitting in comfortable and soft chairs will make you want to spend longer time in that classroom. However, hard and uncomfortable chairs will make you involuntarily lose your patience. As a consequence, our attention span is reduced, thus not being able to fully focus, nor remember new English words. It becomes even more disturbing once back pain starts to kick in, as it won't only make you want to get out of that classroom faster, but it will also ruin your mood for the rest of the day. Layout Desks of more than two people arranged in rows in a classroom, will put you into the listening mood, not the interaction mood. If you are sitting on the side and your colleagues in the middle of the row need to go out of the classroom, they will disturb you, thus make you lose focus on the lesson. Once your attention is lost, it will be very difficult to continue
following the teacher's ideas, thus your learning outcome has been already compromised. However, a cluster type arrangement of tables (students facing each other) will make you more willing to interact with others and encourage to better cooperate in group work. When you are trying to improve your English speaking, this is definitely the type of layout that you should be looking for. Color Vivid colors in a classroom will keep you awake and help you keep your mind focused on the lesson. As
HANGZHOU FAMILY
an example, research shows that blue helps increase the ability to concentrate, while purple encourages cooperation. Classrooms painted in very pale colors (e.g. grey, white, beige etc) will negatively influence your ability to focus and make you feel distracted and sleepy, unable to focus on the tasks at hand. For more info about colors and mood, you can do some research on the psychology of colors. Temperature When talking about temperature, it is very difficult to point out the perfect temperature for maximizing learning outcomes, as different people perceive temperature differently, depending on which geographical area they grew up in. However, it is worth pointing that if you feel too cold or too hot in a classroom, that feeling will inhibit your brain activity, thus trying to attend a lesson in such conditions is a waste of time and resources. It is also worth mentioning that people's perceptions about hot or cold can be influenced by giving them the illusion of control. In other words, research shows that if people feel they have control over the temperature (e.g. they are able to turn the AC up or down), even if the temperature in the room doesn't actually change, but their perception about how hot or cold
it is will change, thus becoming more comfortable in that room. Acoustics If you are among those students who always run to the back of the classroom out of fear that the teacher will ask you questions, depending on how good or bad the acoustics of the classroom is, you might be losing 80% of what the teacher is saying. As a result, it is very easy for you to feel distracted, sleepy and want to find other type of entertainment while in the classroom (e.g. play with your mobile phone, talk with other colleagues etc). If you are a teacher, remember this: next time you face some naughty students in the back of the classroom, just change their position and let them help out with your lesson (e.g. teaching assistant) and see what the result is. I have a feeling you won't be disappointed! Lighting A lot of research is being done in relation to the influence of light on our ability to keep awake and focused. When we are in a classroom, it is very important to have as much natural light as possible, spread equally in all parts of the classroom. Our biological clocks follow the sun's activity: we wake up when the sun rises, we fall
asleep when the sun sets. Sunlight makes us feel awake and energetic, improves our brain activity and helps us focus. If there is not enough light in the classroom, in order to keep both the teacher and the students focused, it is crucial to supplement the lighting. The absence of good light will not only make us lose focus, but it will also add extra pressure on our eyesight when trying to read or do other class activities, thus increase the need to wear glasses. So next time you are in a classroom, either as a student or a teacher, try to observe how these environmental factors influence your behavior and ability to focus. The space you learn (or teach in) has a major impact on learning outcomes, so I will finish this article with the following: 1. T here is no "bad" student, there are only improper learning environments and teachers who don't understand the influence of environmental factors on themselves and their students and/or can't adapt their teaching styles to different styles of learning. 2. E veryone is a genius, but each person's talent is different. Only by having a proper learning environment and guidance can we discover our true potential! redstarhangzhou.com

Breath Pure Air
5 Easy Steps by Dani Hulsemann
U
pon moving to China with my small family earlier this year, I was instantly struck by the many doomsday warnings that ex-pats are bombarded with regarding the hazards of polluted air. In an attempt to strike a healthy medium between the all-out "airpocalypse" measurements one is urged to take and a wish to enjoy my life, I happily struck upon an extremely helpful website by longterm Beijing resident, Dr. Richard Saint Cyr. Having obtained the good doctor's permission to circulate his advice amongst REDSTAR readers, I present you with five easy steps towards breathing pure air:
40
redstarhangzhou.com
1
Get an air purifier (or two, or three!) for your home
The important thing to remember when choosing an air purifier is not to be swayed by brand, appearance, or extra (and perhaps unnecessary) functions. Many air purifiers come at exuberant prices but this does not guarantee that they get the job done any better than cheaper models. You may be surprised to learn that one of the most effective air purifiers can be bought for as cheap as 200 RMB. The SmartAir air purifier was created by a group of clean air enthusiasts and their models have been proven to clean air just as effectively as the more expensive Blueair or Phillips brands.
When choosing a purifier, it is imperative to remember that the fan must be strong enough to effectively clean the space it is placed in. To ensure that this happens, it is necessary to measure the square metre space of your home and buy a purifier that will cover that space. In fact, Dr. Saint Cyr recommends calculating the cubic metre space for more accuracy.

2
Don't forget to change the HEPA air filters when needed!
This is mistake even pros tend to make. Read the manual of your air purifier carefully and mark your calendar when it's time to change the filters.
3
Find and fix air leaks around windows and doors
If you don't live in a spacious villa and your home is more on the snug and cosy side, there is no need to hire a company to find and fix air leaks for you. A little elbow grease and DIY tampering should do the trick just fine. Check around your windows and doors for signs of air leakage. If you discover any unwanted cracks or spaces, seal these shut with self-adhesive foam weather stripping, which can (of course!) be found on taobao.
4
Download the real-time Air Quality Index App
5
Wear a pollution mask
Although there are some pretty cute masks out there, the idea behind wearing a pollution mask is not to make a fashion statement but rather breath clean air. Unfortunately, the second rarely allows for the first. The mask most experts seem to agree on, are those made by 3M, which can be found in almost any youke, kehao, or 7/11. Once again, one may consider consulting taobao and bulk-buying a supply of masks for the winter. That way, you'll never have to worry about a mask being short in demand or that the contents of your wallet, virtual or otherwise, seem to be rapidly depleting. Choose a mask that aims to block at least 90% of PM 2.5. Remember to check that the mask fits snugly
over your nose and cheeks, the sides of the mask should become slightly concave when inhaling. Masks come in different colours, and more importantly, sizes. Child- friendly sizes should be used for the little ones and there are masks that can be fastened behind the head for those who experience discomfort with behind-the-ear fastening models. If you're unsure still have an easy time making new friends without being able to show that beautiful smile of yours, try drawing a nose and whiskers onto your mask. All the friendly smiles will be yours! For a more detailed review of air purifier and pollutions masks, as well as the science behind keeping your air clean, please visit Dr. Saint Cyr's website at www.myhealthbeijing.com.
Aqicn.org is your go-to site for keeping updated on the current air-quality. You can easily download the app - the icon depicts a cloud in a happy rainbow sky - from the website and have it on your phone. The app updates the airquality reading of the monitors closest to your location every hour. This way, you'll always know when it is safe to go outside unprotected and when it might be necessary to crank up the fan speed on your purifier. redstarhangzhou.com

Six Emerging Workplace Design Influences in 2018 by Adina 邱天美 Environmental Psychologist
With increasing globalization, companies around the world started paying more attention to their employees' well-being, since the working environment is changing fast to instigate a new set of trends focused on themes of creativity, community and conscientiousness. Efficiency-based office environments like open spaces with cubicles, for example, are slowly being replaced with offices that promote sustainability, community, diversity and lifestyle. So what design influences will be shaping the workplace in 2018? In this article I will share with you 6 of the emerging trends when it comes to workplace design this year.
CELEBRATE COMMUNITIES In the spirit of sustainability, designers are becoming more aware of the need to reuse and refurbish existing
42
redstarhangzhou.com
buildings, as well as of saving elements of interior architecture that reflect unique parts of that building, renovating them into more creative workplaces. By connecting new work culture in a meaningful way to the collective identity of the location, community and brand, designers are creating authenticity in the workplace all over the world. As a result, designers are able to connect remnants of the past with the elements of the current era, and create more memorable, personalized working spaces. This presents a creative juxtaposition celebrating the old and new within working spaces around the world. The desire to embrace and understand history adds an interesting dialogue to the design process as people connect with the authenticity and uniqueness once hidden in century-old buildings.
GLOBAL INSPIRATIONS Because technology allows us to be instantly connected to images and projects taking place all over the world, designers are finding more inspiration around the globe. In 2017, hygge, the Danish word for cozy, became more prevalent in the workplace as people sought more informal and residential work environments. In 2018, a Japanese aesthetic based off nature and imperfection, called wabi-sabi, is an influence resurfacing in the workplace.
BIOPHILIA 2.0 When we’re surrounded by digital tools all day long, we yearn for a connection to nature. Biophilia, the principle that human beings have an innate desire to connect and bond with nature, is experiencing an increasing demand
HANGZHOU FAMILY
because of the balance we need from our digital world and the benefit nature’s restorative qualities provide our wellbeing. Biophilic elements are making more of an appearance in dedicated rejuvenation and focus areas because we need the therapeutic connection with nature more frequently throughout the day. As some designers will say, it’s about tricking our brains to feel like we’re in a natural environment by triggering underlying patterns that we’re programmed to recognize and feel good in. Time is a luxury and more rejuvenation and respite areas planned on every floor of an office is a must. Office workers need respite especially as they are asked to do more creative problem solving. How do we find peaceful places to think or work with our hands? As we look at the ecosystem of settings people have to choose from at work, more nature is needed in the physical environment so people can step away from their desk, disconnect and rejuvenate. Designers will continue to explore new ways to manifest the restorative properties of nature in the workplace so as to continuously provide better working environments.
DIVERSITY OF MATERIALS As the workplace hosts a broader range of cultures and generations, people are gravitating toward more natural and textured materials. Today’s firsttime employees are comfortable with a
variety of materials, colors and spaces. When people are offered a diversity of spaces, they will find the one that’s the best fit for them. It’s about more than just finding the right spot for different working styles. Materials create a sense of emotional wellbeing. They help a broader audience find a place where they feel they fit. In addition, a heightened understanding of the need for rejuvenation is seen within the workplace. Technology helps us be more productive, but that also means we need more opportunities to disconnect. Translucent and toned down colors as well as textiles with a tactile and warm handfeel will offer calm and comfort in different areas of the workplace.
DESIGNING WITH DATA Data has entered the work environment, adding significant value to the conversation between designers and customers. Designers who talk about changing space and culture with customers now have the benefit of non-biased data to help eliminate the fear of the unknown. Does everyone need their own workstation or private office? Or would more private enclaves and collaboration spaces better serve the team? Sensors in the workplace can help organizations learn how often people are at their desks and what kinds of spaces will best support their people. Data can help
designers and organizations get to an appropriate design solution, faster.
DIGITAL TRIBALIZATION Technology is shortening the distance between the designer and the customer. People are so digitally connected, they are constantly developing and honing their personal design point-of-view. Visceral reactions to imagery found in our social media feeds and online can lead to the assemblage of a context that only fits our view. We “like” and “pin” what we’re drawn to, but then technology uses filters to provide us with more of our preferences, unintentionally narrowing our perspective. This digital tribalization changes the conversation between designers and their customers. Virtual reality and augmented reality have started to bridge the gap between a designer’s holistic vision of the workplace and individual’s unique preferences. What do you think about these design influences? Do you think it is a good direction to go in? How does your working environment look like? Do you feel that your working environment is suitable for your needs? Feel free to share your thoughts by sending an email to tianmeisworld@outlook.com. In order to write this article, research studies available on www.steelcase. com have been consulted. redstarhangzhou.com

Yangshuo – The Magic and Charm of Southern China by Catherine Esser
W
e moved to China in 2011. We love to travel and try to take every holiday we can to explore and go somewhere new. During our first year in this country, we went to many of the big cities - Beijing, Shanghai, Xi’An, Xiamen, and so on. The problem with our travels was that since we were teaching, we always traveled when we, and everyone else, had school vacations. We soon discovered that as we journeyed to the major sites that each city had to offer, we did it in the company of millions of other people. We grew weary of long sweaty bus rides and delayed air travel pretty quickly! Before the end of our first year, we started traveling outside of China instead, during our holidays. Although
44

HANGZHOU FAMILY
we longed to see more of China, our school schedule coincided with peak travel periods, and we yearned for quieter trips. Since then we have traveled to over 25 other countries, but there were still parts of China that we so desperately wanted to see. Fast-forward to this year. At the end of March, our school had their Spring Break coincide with the Qing Ming Festival so we found ourselves with nine days off while the rest of China only had a three day break. This was the perfect opportunity to try our hand at traveling within China again! For the longest time, we have spoken about visiting Southern China - specifically, the Karst mountains in Guilin. We had some friends recommend that we visit Yangshuo, a county in Guilin city. This area is famous for its natural scenery, and is only about 65 kilometers south of Guilin. We flew into Guilin, and had a private driver take us to Yangshuo. On the ride from the airport to the small village where we would be staying, we were in awe! The views on each side of the road were simply breathtaking - we felt like we were in the movie, Jurassic Park. Our first couple of days were spent with friends in our village. We ate at restaurants attached to hotels in the
area, walked to a hillside pagoda, and explored a section of the Yu Long River. By the middle of the week, we started to branch out more. We rented bicycles, one of which had a childseat attached, and biked to nearby villages. With clear skies, and warm temperatures, we were loving every second of the beauty that surrounded us. Being on a bicycle was perfect for this sort of expedition! We were mobile, and were able to cover the spaces between the little villages with relative ease. Our world did, however, really opened up when we borrowed a scooter, and we were able to cover even greater distances! Our first trip on the scooter, was into the city of Yangshuo to an area called West Street. This popular tourist spot has tons of souvenir stores, cafes, and restaurants. It felt a lot like Thailand or Vietnam, and we could definitely feel the difference between the north and south of China there. West Street consists of two parts, the new area and the old area. The new boasts a small lake, fancy restaurants, a three-story Starbucks. The old has a distinct charm, with tons to eat, see, and do. Before the Qing Ming break started, there were almost no tourists in the town, and nothing was over-crowded. This really made
our time in Yangshuo enjoyable! One of our top scooter rides was through the countryside, with no specific destination in mind. We ended up passing big fields of beautiful yellow flowers and decided that we had to stop. The rest of our day was spent combing the magnificent countryside looking for photo opportunities. There was too much beauty to take in. It seemed as though there was a constant fog or mist over the mountains that added a majestic appeal to the area. We were extremely lucky that it only rained for a few hours during our time in Guilin. Two things really stood out about this trip to Southern China. First, we really enjoyed the simplicity of the people, and life in general, in the little village where we stayed. It seemed as though life just moved slower, and this is precisely what we have been desiring for ourselves lately. The second thing that stood out to me, was that after spending nine days in the area, the awe and grandeur of the surrounding landscape never disappeared. We left Guilin, wanting more, and already thinking about when we could go back again! This was, by far, the best travel experience that we have had during our time in China.
