Astronauts launch Tiangong 2 space station mission
Clowns concerned by worldwide “scary clown” fears
Two astronauts have soared into outer space on the Shenzhou 11 for China’s longest-ever staffed space mission. Astronauts Jing Haipeng and Chen Dong will be aboard space laboratory Tiangong 2, the “Heavenly Palace”, for a month, as a test for the national plan to have a permanently-staffed space station operational in 2022. Shenzhou 11's cargo also includes several middle school students' science experiments, one of which will take silkworms into outer space.
The unsettling trend of "scary clowns"—people who dress up as clowns and act in a threatening manner—has inexplicably spread across several countries, setting police forces on edge. Less obviously, it seriously harms the livelihoods of professional clowns. The chair of Clowns International, Robert Bowker, is troubled that the reputation of clowns is changing, mistakenly painting them as a danger to the public. Many other professional clowns worry that their purpose, to bring joy to others, may be overshadowed.

After many reports of the mobile phones catching fire as a result of exploding batteries, Samsung has declared a total recall of 2.5 million versions of the model, and is offering refunds and exchanges to all buyers. The United States Department of Transportation has already banned the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 from every flight entering and departing the US.

Have you ever felt pressure from your parents or from society to get married by a certain age? REDSTAR’s Jasper Zhai asks the opinion of Qingdao locals.

I felt a lot of pressure from society around marriage. In China, if you don’t get married by a certain age, you’re seen as a weirdo. You can’t be yourself sometimes. It really makes people feel bad.
The pressure of marriage is mainly related to money, and public opinion. You need a lot of money to get married; since you typically have to buy an apartment too. And people will judge you if you don’t get married after 30. The high price of houses and low salaries makes it all even worse.

There’s huge pressure to marry for me, and it all comes from the outside world. Like family or classmate gatherings! Whenever you attend events like that you’re asked about your personal life, especially your love life, which is very embarrassing. I hate that you’re seen as a loser if you’re not married.
I think the main pressure is from the public. For example, my parents are ok with me being single, but their friends and relatives put pressure on them, since they keep asking them why I’m still not married; then they transfer the pressure to me. I really hate it. I don’t know why people can’t take care of themselves, instead of poking into other people’s lives.

"GO BACK TO CHINA!" Challis Cates takes a hard look at how Asian Americans are viewed in their home country. Last June, on the tail end of a trip back home to the States, I was accosted by an older couple who barked at me to "go back to China!" Normally this would be considered extremely offensive, if not for a few details — I'm white, I was born in Idaho (basically the Gansu of America), and that couple was my parents, both of whom wanted me off their couch. Michael Luo, the Deputy Metro Editor of the New York Times, whose parents immigrated to the U.S. from Taiwan, had an altogether different experience, which he described in a tweet that has sparked a national dialogue about the day-to-day racism faced by Asian Americans in their home country:
Since publishing the tweet in an open letter that ran on the New York Times' front page, #thisis2016 has become a rallying cry for thousands of Asian Americans to share their experiences encountering racism. Their posts have ranged from inadvertent but cutting microaggressions ("When did you move to this country? Your accent is almost perfect!"), the stupefyingly ignorant ("Is your peripheral vision better than mine, or worse, because, you know… your eyes"), and the aggressively racist ("All Americans only! No chinks!").
Certainly one of the most disturbing consequences of Republican candidate Donald Trump's hateful and vitriolic campaign for the presidency is that his rallies and gatherings have legitimised public expression of just this kind of racist discourse amongst many whites. None of this is new to Asian Americans though. Conservative commentators in the US have long patronisingly referred to Asian Americans as the "model minority" due to widespread perceptions that they perform better in school, achieve more professionally, and have lower crime rates relative to other ethnic groups. Often this "praise," more accurately described as thinly-veiled racist condescension, comes with the expectation that Asian Americans grin-and-bearit through all shades of cultural stereotyping and backhanded bigotry. Not that Asian Americans always receive any kind of respite when leaving abroad for China. Midway through a beginners' Mandarin course at Tsinghua University in Beijing, our professor singled out a group of Asian American women (New Yorkers who happened to have Chinese ancestry) and announced, "None of you are really American," before turning to me and announcing, "He's the real American. He's white!" Many were already all too familiar with 香 蕉人 ("banana people"), the common pejorative term in China for Western "assimilated" Asians: yellow on the outside, white on the inside. Situations like these make it clear that the human attitude to race is still far too obsessed with differences, and is a disappointingly long way from maturity. myredstar.com

WHEN AND WHERE IS THE REAL GREAT WALL? In the light of the scandalous Great Wall “restoration” in Liaoning that caused widespread shock and outrage to experts and the masses alike, Challis Cates questions the meaning, role, and identity of China’s most iconic structure.
I
n the first episode of An Idiot Abroad, a 2010 anti-travel show in which British comedian Ricky Gervais flies his sheltered friend Karl Pilkington out of "little England" to witness the 7 Wonders of the World, Karl visits the Great Wall outside Beijing and stands atop it unimpressed, announcing, "It's not a Great Wall. It's an alright wall," and observing that "it goes on for miles over the hills and everything, but so does the M6 [motorway] … and you can drive on that!" Now, six years later, Chinese drivers may have the opportunity to do just that thanks to the efforts of local officials in

Liaoning's Suizhong County who "restored" a 2km section of the Ming Dynasty Great Wall along the border with Hebei, a UNESCO World Heritage Site dating back to 1381 C.E., by paving it over completely, flattening out the rampart's weathered towers and crenellations into a smooth white ribbon which the New York Times likened to "a cement skateboarding lane dumped in the wilderness." According to local villagers the "repairs" were completed back in 2014, but news only broke last month after photos of
the botched preservation efforts taken by hikers were posted online to social media platforms like Weibo, where they quickly went viral and made international headlines, shocking and inciting the fury of everyday citizens and cultural heritage experts alike. In an interview with the South China Morning Post, deputy director of the Great Wall Society of China Dong Yaohui expressed that he was "heartbroken" to see the wonder desecrated "beyond all recognition like this," while Ding Hui, head of the Liaoning Provincial Antiquities Bureau, admitted in an official statement

out of Suizhong, lamented in an Op-Ed to the news network CN Hubei, later translated by the Times, “Where is there still any feel of that most beautiful wild Great Wall?” Mr. Qi's question is all the more relevant when considered in light of a 2015 report that at least 30% of the original Ming Great Wall, accounting for some 2,000 km, has been permanently lost to weathering, erosion, and looting, and that unpreserved sections are at risk of total disappearance. Yet there is no consensus on how best to maintain and preserve China's ancient relics without stripping them of their historical character and authenticity. Many of my hiking friends in Beijing consider the paved stretch at Suizhong to me no worse than the improved and commercialized section at Badaling. Even Lonely Planet, the ubiquitous travel guide company, writes of Badaling that “the mere mention of its name sends a shudder down the spine of hardcore Wall walkers” as it was “completely renovated in the 1980’s and so lacks a true sense of historical authenticity.” All this would be simpler if the Great Wall was just another important historical site or tourist destination; but it is essential to Chinese identity, as a cultural birthright and a symbol of national unity and strength. Indeed the State Administration of Cultural Heritage writes on its webpage that "preserving the Great Wall is a sacred and unshirkable duty." To do that though one must first carefully consider Mr. Qi’s question.
that the work "does not look ideal." Meanwhile, netizens were quick to dub the canvassed stretch the "Great Wall of Concrete." Liaoning officials insist that no concrete was used, and that instead the Wall was paved with a mixture of lime; apparently missing the point entirely. Nevertheless these officials maintain that the paved section was in such a state of disrepair that they were faced with the choice of surrendering it to the elements or taking extreme measures to protect it. Writer Qi Guorui, in response to the news
When and where does the real Great Wall exist intact? We yearn for a Wall salvaged from erosion by the weathering of time, which in the relentless passage of decades and centuries and millennia renders all great works into dust, yet unmolested by the hands of modern men, who in their good faith attempts to protect and preserve would rob the very historical authenticity to which its wonder is owed. Such a Wall, perhaps, exists nowhere save for in the minds of mortal women and men and in the collective memory and imagination of civilisations. Yet
// FEATURES /
even there, the real Great Wall is still not a singular and unbroken length, laid out end on end, but rather a symbolic duality, existing in the realm of ideals as two simultaneous but mutually exclusive narratives that draw from the brick and mortar of the same wall to tell very different stories. Indeed, there are not one but two Great Walls: the one "discovered" by the Europeans and the one that was built by the Chinese. The first Great Wall, commonly referred to as the “wild wall”, accounts for the overwhelming percentage of the 21,196 km in original fortifications that lay stretched across Northern China from its modern border with North Korea at Dandong in the East and the outskirts of the Taklamakan Desert in Xinjiang Province to the West, and lies in varying states of disrepair or disappearance due to weathering, neglect, or scavenging by local residents for building materials. This is the Great Wall that captured the Western imagination after European explorers like Matteo Ricci, an Italian Jesuit Priest in China during the turn of the 16th century, first began to send messages back home of the wonder. The second Great Wall, fully restored to the resplendent glory of its condition under the Ming Dynasty during the 14th century at sections like at sections like Badaling and Mutianyu, is easily accessible to the millions of tourists who visit it annually from around the world via bus or train, and is even further improved with gondolas, German style luges, American fast-food restaurants, and open pits of Russian bears. This is the Great Wall that was first produced by the Chinese civilisation, which has been built and rebuilt since 220 BCE, and which today China builds again once more.

Characters have changed from their ancient forms during the Shang Dynasty BCE, to standardisation under the Qing Dynasty CE, to the modern simplified characters of the Putonghua system. As the presence of Chinese grows far beyond China’s borders and spreads throughout the world, more and more foreigners are flocking to China, drawn by Chinese culture, by family, by countless professional and business opportunities. Many foreigners are interested in Chinese, and the foreigners who live in China have more reason to be interested than most. Some learn out of pure fascination with the language, others out of practical necessity for daily life. many native English speakers, who have never had to think about tones before, or memorise the sound and meaning(s) assigned to a single character. So how to push your language skills beyond saying nihao and xiexie? As with any area of study, a good teacher is the answer. Kelvin Wang is a Chinese tutor of almost seven years’ experience teaching adult and child expats in Qingdao. He believes everyone, with the correct study method, can learn to speak Chinese. “If you can speak English, you can speak very basic Chinese, you just need to know some very basic words,” he says. Kelvin says that if you live in China, it is a good idea to learn Chinese. “In China you have a very good environment for learning the language—
you can practice your Chinese with your Chinese colleagues and friends.” In modern times, he says, many people believe learning Chinese is extremely important. “My students tell me, they want their children to learn some Chinese, they think Chinese will be helpful in their children’s future career”. One of Kelvin’s favoured activities to teach children Chinese is to ask them to draw a picture, and then to tell him the picture’s story in Chinese. “Children are very smart and full of energy, so if you have the correct method, they will learn Chinese very fast and very effectively.” His methods for teaching adults are more focused upon everyday practical situations. All of his adult students aim to study hard, because they are interested in learning Chinese, but they often lack the necessary free time. “I use some teaching topics about their everyday life, about their work, and

we do some language roleplays, sometimes I will play a taxi driver, sometimes I’m a market seller, so they can play the passenger or the customer.” A problem that foreigners normally struggle with is Chinese pronunciation, because Chinese has four tones where English has none. “If you want to speak fluently, you need to train the muscle which is your mouth, let your mouth be familiar with Chinese pronunciation—I think non-Chinese people can become fluent in Chinese, because learning Chinese is just like going to a gym to exercise your body,” he smiles. “If you spend enough time and use the right method, you can be fluent in Chinese.” Sara Jaaksola is the living proof of such a statement. A private Chinese teacher working in Guangzhou, she first travelled to China in 2010. Six years later in 2016, she is well past HSK Level 6, is highly fluent in Mandarin, and has achieved a Master’s degree in Teaching Chinese as a Second Language from Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou. She has long possessed a strong passion for Chinese language and culture. “Chinese’s differences to European languages interests me, the character writing system brings along its own flavor and I love how much meaning even one character can convey,” Sara says.

Because of the differences between Chinese and English grammar, she also recommend learning words in phrase contexts, which can help avert common mistakes. “Every learner should have the Pleco app on their phone, and Pinyin Trainer by Trainchinese is a valuable app for training your ear to Chinese pronunciation and tones.” Sara emphasises the importance of learning

PAN GAOPENG
– THE CONTEMPORARY TRADITIONALIST Georgia Leach talks to artist Pan Gaopeng about his modern interpretation of traditional Chinese landscape paintings and his newfound popularity.
T
raditional landscape paintings capture the mystic beauty of China's mountains and bodies of water with an elegance that typifies China's literati culture. The scholarly way of life was central to society in dynastic China, structuring politics, literature and the arts. After the fall of the Qing Dynasty in 1911, many traditional art forms were condemned in the ferocious pursuit of modernisation, and traditional landscape painting was shunned in favour of what was considered progressive. However, this ancient style is beginning to return to China's
art scene, exemplified in the rise of painter Pan Gaopeng. Despite his mature age, Mr. Pan, 74, is rapidly becoming the artist of the moment with his modern take on conventional Chinese landscape painting. After graduating from Nanjing University of the Arts in 1966, Mr. Pan spent the next thirty years working as the senior arts editor and
reporter of the Xinhua Daily, totally immersing himself in the study and promotion of arts in China. A Jiangsu native, he soon emerged as an authoritative voice in the local art world, holding several influential positions in the area, including the presidency of Jiangsu Province Artists' News Association. However, it wasn't until more recently that Mr. Pan turned his attention fully towards his own passion for painting. In the last decade, Pan Gaopeng has held four successive solo exhibitions, making him one of the most prolific individual artists in contemporary China. Recognised by several award committees, Mr. Pan has been promoted to a "National Grade One Artist" by China's government. So what makes his works so special? Pan Gaopeng's landscapes nimbly walk a line between tradition and innovation, giving them a unique style and perhaps broader appeal than committed traditionalist
works. Mr. Pan integrates the magnificence of traditional northern landscape painting with the subtle brushwork of the southern school (commentators have noted similarities to Fan Kuan, a renowned landscape painter of the Song Dynasty), yet copious lashings of bold colour create dense, ornately woven scenes that are Mr. Pan's unique speciality. The heavy use of ink does not feel overwrought, however, adding to the detail and charm of the scene rather than drowning it. The results of this are bright works with their own personality and distinct allure. Currently exhibiting at the Jiangsu Province Art Gallery, Pan Gaopeng was recently featured at the National Art Museum of China in Beijing, and has ambitions to showcase his works abroad. By infusing his painting with untrammelled personality, Mr. Pan transcends the qualities of the traditional landscape artist, giving his works a distinctivly creative and highly enjoyable zest. myredstar.com

CHINESE MODERN MUST-READS
To Live Yu Hua
Red Sorghum
Song of Everlasting Sorrow
Yu Hua is a superstar of modern Chinese fiction, and his books have been beautifully translated. To Live is the story of the proud, spoiled son of a landowner, and his struggles through the Communist Revolution. The lyricism and powerfully humble approach to life and existence in Yu Hua’s novels is breathtaking. To Live is an artful communication of thoughts on existence, while at the same time providing a window into China’s difficult, contradictory modern past. Collecting all of Yu Hua’s novels is highly recommended; each one is more beautiful and thoughtprovoking than the last.
Mo Yan is famous as the only Chinese author to have won a Nobel Prize for literature, for writing that "with hallucinatory realism merge folk tales, history and the contemporary". Red Sorghum is Mo’s most famous work, telling the painful story of a rural Shandong winery family from the 1920s to the 1970s, through the voice of the family’s grandson. Red Sorghum was also made into a stunning film by Zhang Yimou, ranking with Farewell My Concubine as one of China’s best. This book is a heartbreaking, humanely told story. It interweaves historical events with rural Chinese superstitions and myths, and it is a must-read for understanding more about the harshness of country life.
Born in 1955 to two authors, Wang Anyi’s high school years were traumatically interrupted when she, like almost all youths her age, was sent to the countryside for reeducation. She grew up in Shanghai, and Song of Everlasting Sorrow tracks the life of a Wang Qiyao, a working-class woman who has to conceal her infatuation with the 1940s glitz and glamour during China’s revolutionary era. Qiyao’s story is a heartfelt symbol of resistance against adversity, as well as a touching exploration of the importance of small things.

Ebooks or hard copies of all of these titles are easily found online. As for shops, try the Book Nook in Qingdao’s Creative 100 building on Nanjing Road; or pick up a few next time you’re in the bigger cities. Wives and Concubines (also Wolf Totem known as Raise the Red Jiang Rong Lantern) Su Tong
Wall Street Journal correspondent Leslie Chang’s decision to write this book, stemmed from the significant media attention given to poor working conditions in China in th years around its publishing in 2008. She follows the lives of two workers, Wu Chunming and Lu Qingming, from their rural hometowns to the factory city of Dongguan in south central China, as well as describing her own family’s history of migration in search of a better life. Migrating workers are a huge pillar of modern Chinese society; Ms Chang’s novel is a window into this less discussed part of Chinese urbanity.

This harrowing tale was made famous by Zhang Yimou’s film adaptation, one of the ‘red trilogy’ that included Red Sorghum mentioned above. It tells the story of a young woman in 1930s Shanghai, who becomes a rich man’s concubine when her father goes bankrupt to avoid having to work. The toxicity and claustrophobia of this traditional household slowly breaks down the main character’s will, the narrative gripping you like iron to the very end.
Published in 2004 under a pen name, this book was China’s biggest smash hit to date. At first glance, it appears to tell the story of an imperial-era Chinese official, Chen, who retreats to the countryside of Inner Mongolia in search of spiritual peace. Chen is swiftly followed, however, by Han Chinese on a modernising mission to exterminate the wolves that (on paper) plague the Inner Mongolian people. The events set in motion by the disruption of natural order become a stinging commentary on China’s zealous modernisation projects. An unmissable, gripping epic.

AN INTERVIEW WITH
ZHANG YUERAN One of China’s best-loved female authors on her newest release, "The Cocoon"
Zhang Yueran is one of China's most famous contemporary female writers, often associated with a group of authors loosely called the "post-80s" generation. She comes from Jinan, Shandong, and has just published her new book "The Cocoon”, seven painstaking years in the making. Her new book is an exploration of fatherdaughter relationships in Chinese society. Suki Li talks to Ms. Zhang about her work, life, and thoughts on the study of literature in China.

o Zhang Yueran, Qingdao is a city of beautiful memories. Although she has been taking the high-speed train from Jinan to Qingdao for years, it still excites her. "I really enjoy the train to Qingdao. The scenery is stunning. I especially like it at dusk, when it seems like the train is chasing the sunset. The closer we got to Qingdao, the more changeable the clouds were. The journey here is always a graceful one."
The post-80s generation, a term applied to the general populace as well as to authors, describes those born in the 80s who were first affected by China’s family planning. They grew up without siblings, and were labelled (perhaps as every generation is) as selfish, spoiled, and rebellious. The post-80s generation are now maturing and taking the stage as they enter their 30s.
Ms. Zhang mentions many experiences in the city of Qingdao, which she loves, in her new book. "Qingdao was the very first destination for me to travel alone to, with my close friends in junior school. It was an unforgettable childhood memory - we were swimming in the sea and having lots of fun. This is the first book in which I write about my own personal experiences. My previous works are much more fictional in comparison." And what is the meaning of the title, The Cocoon? "It is the way we live. We all seem to live in our own cocoon, without communicating with our families and friends."
People should read fiction. It keeps you young! People of a certain age don't need fiction anymore. They no longer need or trust stories.
This "cocoon" phenomenon is, she says, especially striking between Chinese fathers and daughters. "I wrote about the stories of my father's colleagues in the 1990s, a time when Chinese people were very pessimistic about the future. People felt that spiritual pillars were missing, that nothing was worth doing. I think the 90s is far away enough for us to study it objectively in the dimension of history. But I am not trying to revisit history. I wanted to write through the eyes of a child—the most objective and honest angle. Children's eyes are like cameras, they record everything. They are my childhood memories." Although Ms. Zhang describes herself as a pessimist, when I ask whether her relationship with her father is a bad one, she smiles. "It isn't as dramatic as it is in the book, it’s not that much confrontation. My father is a candid and direct man, and we have a good relationship. But we are not very intimate. He is, after all, a typical Shandong father." Ms. Zhang is regarded as one of the most successful "post-80s" generation authors.
Ms. Zhang had been writing since she was 14, but says that university was a turning point. "Studying in Singapore was the best time in my life. Although my major was computer science, my passion is literature. My aspiration to be a professional writer began at that time, and honour permitted no turning back. I couldn’t stop. That was my honeymoon period with writing, so heroic, so impassioned. After becoming a professional writer, I do sometimes get weary of it. During the difficult periods, I try to find solutions… if I can’t find one, then I wait. Pausing is also an important process for writing." She thinks for a while. “You need catalysts to write. All my inspiration comes from my internal experience as well as being stimulated by external conditions." As a lecturer for the course "Fiction Study" at Renmin University of China, Ms. Zhang was able to engage more with contemporary Chinese youth, and here she says she found the light of the young generation. "Students nowadays are very talented, very innovative when understanding a piece of work—so innovative that I even doubted if they were original. I even checked on Douban (the largest literature and art forum in China), but I found nothing to suggest they had plagiarised. I felt sorry for lacking trust in my students, but it shows how incredibly impressed I was by their creativity."
However, Ms. Zhang is not without her worries. “I am disappointed with literature education nowadays. Many students in my classes didn't know classic books such as Madame Bovary, which shows that there is definitely a lack of classic literature education in China. I would recommend my students to read two kinds of books. Firstly, the classics, since they have stood the test of time; secondly, the contemporary, because you should know about the world and society that you are living in. I especially say that people should read fiction. It keeps you young! People of a certain age don't need fiction anymore. They no longer need or trust stories. I think one criteria to judge whether a person is still young in mind is to test if they still believe in the use of something that is fabricated.” Ms. Zhang is also concerned about the change of reading habits from reading a book to reading on phones. "The popularity of short reading has limited the development of many talented young writers. Most online articles are unfinished—they are too early, too rushed to be published, which is a real pity. The Internet has given writers many opportunities, but it also hinders attempts to write something serious and well thought-out.”

A LAMENT FOR THE 2016 US ELECTION:
HOW DID WE GET HERE? October is over, which means goodbye over-priced pumpkin spice lattes, and hello US election day. What a disillusioning election it has been. After an unbearably long and undeniably bizarre campaign season, it seems that Donald Trump is finally bending towards defeat. Many global citizens remain, perhaps, bewildered by a presidential election system that has almost allowed a racist, male chauvinist, politically incapable business “tycoon” to wedge his foot inside the door of the White House. While Mr. Trump’s near-universally offensive rhetoric continues to hog global headlines, there are other issues that this particular presidential race has subtly highlighted. Full-blooded American Timothy Ulrich sheds light on some of the workings, and problems, of the US presidential election.
20
myredstar.com
On their appearance in spring 2015, the presidential candidates were to be the best of the best, sincere and hardworking champions of the people. Even more so once whittled down to the two final candidates, who would, logically, be the most intelligent, ethical, and likeable people the US had to offer. The reality, however, is a far cry from this ideal, and certainly from what many would call logic. So how exactly did that happen? Money and the US election A successful candidate cannot exist without a campaign. Presidential campaigns historically have required huge amounts of money. As a result, candidates must either have a huge amount of money, or stand with an organisation that can give it to them. The USA has legislation in place attempting to restrict the influence of wealthy individuals on political outcomes,
including a limit of USD $2,700 for any individual donation to a campaign, party or candidate. Bringing together all of these smaller donations you have Political Action Committees (PACs), sometimes known as ‘bundlers’, that gather together individual donations to make substantially larger ones. These donations are also limited by law. Sounds smart, right? However, outside of this, there exist organisations known as super PACs, that have no legal limit on “political spending” (i.e.advertising, which is typically a campaign’s biggest cost) provided the money doesn’t go directly to a candidate or party. As well as super PACs are groups known as 501(c)(4)s, excitingly named after their legal tax category. 501(c)(4s are listed nonprofit organisations that are also permitted to spend politically, and furthermore do not have to reveal the names of their donors. Crucially, in 2010, a Supreme Court ruling removed any cap on
广告 • 特辑
donations to 501(c)(4) nonprofits, meaning that the nonprofit could channel unlimited funds to a candidate of their choice. 501(c)(4)s were reported by the Centre for Responsive Politics to have spent almost $300 million on political funding for the 2012 Romney/Obama election. A separate Centre for Public Integrity study found that in 2010, the nonprofits outspent super PACs by a 3-2 margin. OpenSecrets.org, a website dedicated to the transparency of politicians—particularly when donations are involved—places investment firms, major corporations, media conglomerates, and real estate tycoons on top of Mrs. Clinton’s donation list, although her campaign declines to quantify donation amounts over $100,000. Donors on this list could have given $100,000 or $10 million. These may seemingly be a simple donation to a campaign that businesses align themselves with, what occurs is quid pro quo corruption. As an editorial piece in the New Yorker points out, donors can—and more than likely do—withhold donations next election cycle if legislation
favouring the donator is not passed, surely affecting the motivations of candidates whose campaigns could not run without this money. The Problems of Single Candidacy Mr. Trump continues to astound the world with the social aptitude of an adolescent who just discovered Playboy. He is taking centre stage this election, and none can deny that he stands out as someone who has never ceased to “speak his mind” on various subjects, ranging from calling migrant Mexicans rapists (amongst a slew of other racial insinuations), to the repulsive debacle involving a leaked audio tape of him claiming that his stardom allows him to sexually assault women. Somehow, this is seen as strength by his followers. He’s seen as someone who isn’t at the mercy of his campaign donators and associates in Washington, unlike his fellow Republican candidates, who could only go so far out on a limb without risking the financial lifeline of their campaigns. But is this a sign of the strength of a candidate or the weakness of a system? Why is it that
// FEATURES /
the wealthiest candidate who says the most absurd things can be seen as strong? This election has made it possible that a terrifyingly, dangerously incompetent man might become our chief decision maker. The concentration of power in the oval office is daunting. The President is able to pass or veto legislation that has made its way through congress, and even add to the legislation through what are known as signing statements. They are also endowed with an incredibly influential mouthpiece that has the ability and history of leading America and its allies into misguided, painful and destructive wars. So now, as Americans cast their ballots, what they are left with is the decision to give this immense amount of power to one of two candidates. With the potentially damaging amount of money involved on both sides, startling concentration of power in an inevitably imperfect human being, and one of the two choices being Mr. Trump, the American people will be the real losers of this election—no matter which candidate wins. myredstar.com

FOOTBALL IN SHANDONG
In recent decades, many have noted the increased maturity and popularity of The China Super League (CSL). The rise of Chinese football has triggered discussions among fans all over the world, not to mention a trend of world class football players and coaches joining the CSL: Brazilian player Hulk and Chilean manager Manuel Pellegrini being two cases in point! So what are the characteristics of football in Shandong, and how is it reacting to this period of great change in Chinese football? Ryan Li reports. 22
myredstar.com
“Solid, energetic and aggressive” is an appropriate description when it comes to Shandong players. Indeed, Shandong has played a key role for the national team, with numerous Shandong players representing China in international competitions. Jinan-born Zhang Linpeng, a defender who also happens to be the Chinese national team’s vice captain, was highly praised by legendary ltalian manager Marcello Lippi as “the best Chinese footballer in the Chinese Super League”. Physical strength coupled with bold personalities enable Shandong players to fight for every second of ball control; thus they easily form the bedrock and spirit of the Chinese team.
But individual players are nothing without their teams; and the outstanding performance of football clubs in Shandong cannot be neglected. Shandong’s Luneng Taishan team entered the quarter final of the Asian Champions’ League (AFC) 2016 after victory against Sydney FC. This was a great victory of recognition for Luneng, as the AFC is the biggest stage for football clubs in Asia; however, the team’s performance this football season was no coincidence. Based in in Jinan, Luneng Taishan Football Club was established way back in 1956. They have continually won domestic trophies, bagging the 2006, 2008, and 2010 Super League titles. This makes them officially one of China’s best football

teams. Now Luneng’s management focuses on strategies to remain highly competitive and safeguard their position at the top. The huge success of the Guangzhou Evergrande team is also worthy of note. With two AFC titles, and having twice entering the semi-final of the FIFA Club World Cup, the team gave a huge boost to the Chinese football industry. Hiring famous players and coaches from Europe and South America has since become more and more commonly seen in Chinese football. Employing foreign coaches and players has given enough of a boost to Chinese squads to significantly decrease the gap between China and Europe. On 8 June 2016, the famous German coach Felix Magath officially became the manager of Luneng; he is a formidably experienced coach, with two consecutive "Doubles" (German Bundesliga and German Cup titles) with Bayern Munich under his belt, and a reputation of strong discipline and tough training. Expanding their imports of foreign players beyond South America (the scouting work of Chinese football clubs used to be focused on the second tier of professional football leagues in Brazil and Argentina), the scouting work of Chinese clubs has now expanded to the top football leagues and players in Europe. Luneng’s current squad boasts names as big as Graziano Pelle and Papiss Cisse on their roster. Their experience and reputations are earning Luneng a place on the international football stage. The rapid growth and great potential of the Chinese football industry has
also begun to bring in real investment from abroad. The first foreign-owned football club in China, Qingdao Red Lions Football Club, was established early this year, with its home base in the Chengyang district of Qingdao; and this ambitious club is not one to be ignored. "We are targeting the Chinese Super League," said Piet van der Pol, the founder of the Qingdao Red Lions. The Red Lions recently won third place in Qingdao’s amateur league, and the team aim to qualify for league 2 in the coming months. Professional coaching and European style club management makes the Red Lions unique, and certainly a team to watch. Their head coach, Jan Poortvliet, has considerable pedigree, having
formerly managed the UK’s Southampton FC, and having himself been a world-class footballer, defending for the Netherlands in the 1978 World Cup final. He and his team of professional coaching staff are bringing in new training and coaching methods to China, with the potential to push Chinese football to world-class standards. Not that the burgeoning world of Chinese football is without its problems: there is a tendency for football clubs to rely on large investments from sponsors, while neglecting the generation of their own income and improving stadium facilities. The Red Lions, however, with a more mature management system, have their eyes set on long-term and continuous development, one part of which is the Little Red Lions youth program, designed to build a strong foundational reputation as well as sustainably generate income. With the help of these new factors, a bright future for the Qingdao Red Lions, as well as for Chinese football, is appearing on the horizon.

INNER MONGOLIA China’s October holiday is a golden opportunity to retreat from bustling city life in Qingdao to a more peaceful, bucolic location. While crowds swarmed towards the temperate south, Naomi Newell bucked the trend and headed for China’s foreboding north. Since reading of the ferocious empire-building of Genghis Khan, she had felt an irresistible pull towards the rolling grasslands of Inner Mongolia. Defying the worried warnings of the cold of every Chinese she spoke to, on the 29 September, she boarded a 33-hour train to Manzhouli 满洲里 .
Manzhouli Flying is certainly more time-efficient to go to Inner Mongoilia, but if you have the time, the safe, comfortable and amazing value sleeper trains provide a much richer travel experience. Hour after hour of countryside rolling past imparts a feeling of smallness, an awe at the sheer mass of China and the mammoth task of traversing it, that's muted through the thick oval windows of an aeroplane. A strong staff presence, even after lights-out at 9pm, meant you felt safe as well as warm in your bed. For every six beds there were two window seats, which we were glued to as the train glided into Inner Mongolia and the view became ever

more mesmerising. The rolling landscape was painted with autumnal colours; coppery birch leaves set off a backdrop of rusty hills, tinged with mulberry. As if in time-lapse photography, one minute the blue sky was bright with sunshine, the next moment we passed through a thunderstorm with equally brilliant flashes of lightning. Manzhouli itself is small. Buses frequent the main street, but most places are within walking distance. We visited the gateway ( 国门 ) marking the Sino-Russian border, although foreigners are denied entry. As we walked back towards the town centre,
it began to snow, and we hurried into a nearby hotel. It was a converted Russian art museum, with walls painted with colourful frescoes, in striking contrast to the bleak weather. I had been warned of the wild ways of the north, but was still alarmed when a brawl erupted between a customer and a member of staff. We hurriedly left as one dragged another to the ground and security personnel appeared. Accompanied by quiet snowfall, we meandered through the town’s history: a deserted theme park; an abandoned Russian circus; crumbling statues of former communist heroes. “hǎo huāngliáng!” my friend cried, which roughly translates to “How desolate!” Manzhouli’s

in front of us, worlds away from the prim and proper English style. In the evening we tried a somewhat expensive but goodquality Russian meal, of borscht, beetroot salad and syrniki. The Russian Border from Enhe We planned to take a coach to E'erguna 额 尔古纳 the next morning, and from there to Enhe 恩和 . We were heartbroken when we learned tickets had sold out; but in the biggest stroke of luck possible, we bumped into the driver – a sanguine, generous man – who cheerfully secured us the seats we were after. The 6-hour journey was cushioned by beautiful views, including peeking at a movie being filmed on the outskirts of Enhe.
nightscape was much more vibrant. The city fills with lights, and shops selling furs and leathers throw their doors open late into the evening. Pasturelands and Horse Riding The following day was spent exploring the pasturelands. Hiring a taxi cost 200RMB but in peak season it can be triple this. As we travelled away from Manzhouli, wind turbines and pylons gave way to the beautiful wilderness of the prairie. The undulating hills were yellowing, but patches of lush green grass, the bright blue sky and grey shadows cast by clouds above, were woven into a colourful tapestry. Herds of horses peacefully grazed and shepherds (atop motorbikes) guarded flocks. I savoured the crisp, clean air as only a Chinese city dweller can. We came upon a paddock and, after some haggling, went horse riding in the hills. The Mongolian rider happily bumped away
Enhe is a quaint, unspoilt village known for its plentiful dairy, wild blueberries, and Russian lieba 列巴 bread. Cows wandered freely and filled the streets with brays – from the sound and appearance of one, she was about to give birth. By evening the temperature had dropped several degrees below freezing, and the stars that are rare in cities were scattered generously in the sky. Along the road people barbecued meat to the sound of music, but we were drawn instead to a bakery, where an old lady watched over baking loaves and a bubbling pot of blueberry jam. She welcomed us, fed us, and insisted we return the next morning for fresh milk from her cow (when we did, she also gave us freshly baked biscuits!). We filled our next day with an 8-hour day trip to the Russian border, organised by the nearby youth hostel. We trundled along dirt tracks and up grassy hills, rewarded with breathtaking views of the most beautiful countryside I have ever seen. When the driver finally pulled up and opened the door, we were like children on a school trip, climbing hay bales and chasing horses while he prepared a picnic for us. We ate lunch under the shade of white birches, from where we could see a cow suckling her calf, in Russia, just metres away.

The Wetlands of Eerguna We spent two final days in E'erguna before getting the train back from Hailaer 海拉 尔 via Beijing. In E'erguna, you can find Mongolia’s famous leg of lamb and milk tea, but it is most notable for its wetlands 湿地 , within walking distance of the town centre. On entering the park there is a hill to walk up, from where we zigzagged down to a view of the river and its surrounding wetlands. A strong wind was blowing, shaking the trees and numbing our fingers! Among the falling orange leaves, willow tits flitted from branch to branch. We befriended a local girl who sat with us drinking coffee and overlooking the island below. Her accent was heavy and I had to rely on my Chinese friend to translate (in general, communication in Inner Mongolia is difficult without a Chinese or Russian language background). She even serenaded us with a Mongolian song: a folk song about the grasslands, a popular genre and one that you will hear often, whether on a bus or in the plaza watching middle-aged ladies (and a few men) dance! The White Birch Forest On the last day we hired a taxi to take us to the white birch forest, 白桦林 . The red leaves of the trees made a striking contrast with the pure white of the bark. The wood itself had a very romantic atmosphere and with interlacing wooden walkways, it was easy to escape to a completely tranquil area. It seems that in the summer reindeer are brought in as an attraction, but the only animal we spotted was a solitary chipmunk nibbling on a cracker. The wood was sloping and as we walked to the top of the hill we came across a hidden playground. The wooden seesaw and swings were camouflaged by the surrounding trees and we childishly played as we pleased. As we left we heard the famous lyrics of the 白桦林 love ballad being sung, “Two names were etched into the bark of a white birch” ( 白桦树刻着那两 个名字 )". A part of my heart has been left behind in Inner Mongolia. I am confident we will meet again. myredstar.com

Praised by Kenny Aronoff as the rock band with the most potential in Mainland China, Finger Family is composed of 5 members, each with their own unique music taste. You can hear this clearly in the vitality and variety of their songs. Borrowing elements of ‘cutie’ rock, pop-punk and grunge, and integrating them into mainstream rock, Finger Family’s music is full of energy and understated power. Despite their young age, Finger Family have played more than 100 live shows, and this shows in the polish and sophistication of their performances. The name Finger Family was chosen because the band see themselves as four fingers and a thumb on one hand, different in length and functions, but synchronising perfectly, as a family. Their solidarity is tangible in their sound, and their chemistry as a group makes it easy to see why their music, and live shows, appeal so widely. Finger Family is treating Downtown Bar stage to one of their hugely enjoyable live performances. Don't miss out!

AND THE AWARD GOES TO... WAIT, REALLY? Josh Martin addresses how China's oldest film award is facing the biggest controversy of its 33-year history

scar-winning actors and filmmakers are frequently billed as "Academy Award winners" for the rest of their careers. China’s Hundred Flowers Awards, in contrast, are basically forgotten the minute they come out. This year was a marked exception, but for all the wrong reasons. When the prizes were handed out on 24 September, Feng Shaofeng took home Best Actor for his role in Wolf Totem. Accepting the award, Feng said: "I never expected to realise my dream of receiving this award". Assuming this was not false modesty, that puts him in the company of practically everyone in China, who shared his surprise at the upset victory. Feng has the looks of a star, but few would rank him among China’s best actors, and the underwhelming Wolf Totem was hardly a fine showcase. Feng’s award also came at the expense of some of the most acclaimed performances of recent years, including Feng Xiaogang in Mr. Six (who scooped acting prizes at the Venice Film Festival and Taiwan’s Golden Horse Awards) and Deng Chao in the acclaimed thriller The Dead End (which won Best Picture). Meanwhile, Angelababy—who might be considered a sort of female Feng Shaofeng—took Best Supporting Actress for the goofy SFX extravaganza Mojin: The Lost Legend, while TV competition show winner-turned-actor Li Yifeng won Best Supporting Actor for his turn in Mr. Six. Online wags declared the evening a triumph for the ‘facial paralysis’ school of acting. However questionable their abilities, Feng Shaofeng, Angelababy, and Li Yifeng all have sizable followings, and their awards aren’t really as shocking as the reaction might suggest. The Hundred Flowers Awards are selected by a semi-public ballot, a system that distinguishes it from most other ‘prestige’ awards—including the Golden Rooster Awards, the Hundred Flowers’ sister ceremony (both the Hundred Flowers and the Golden Roosters are run by the same organisation, and since 2004 they’ve been awarded in alternate years). Founded in 1962, the Hundred Flowers were at first selected by readers of Popular Cinema Magazine, and 120,000 voters
// CULTURE /
participated in the inaugural year. In 2000 the process was opened to the entire public, and the original electorate of 120,000 has now ballooned to nearly 20 million, mostly voting through the internet and SMS. But the process isn’t quite as democratic as it sounds. The general public only chooses the shortlist of nominees, from an initial longlist prepared by the statesponsored China Film Association. The final winners are chosen by a committee of 101 jurors, ostensibly members of the public representing various demographics (‘workers, peasants, soldiers, intellectuals, students, and businesspeople’). The jury’s precise composition is not made public, and its preferences are sometimes very much at odds with those of the population at large. In 2006, for example, the Best Picture award went to Zhang Side—a propaganda film about a ‘model soldier’ of the Sino-Japanese War—instead of the wildly popular Kung Fu Hustle. In 2010 the jury plumped for another propaganda spectacle (The Founding of a Republic), while the well-received megahits If You Are the One and The Message placed fourth and fifth out of a field of five. The problem this year, though, is very nearly the opposite. This year’s jury showed no particular obeisance to ‘official’ film culture; indeed, the choice of The Dead End for Best Picture raised hackles from stodgier observers who considered the film too downbeat. Rumours have swirled of shady goings-on behind the scenes: one anonymous blogger claimed, without proof, that some jurors’ votes were not recorded, and awards officials admitted that some ballots were rerun after erroneous counts. But Ockham’s Razor probably applies here. Feng, Li, and Angelababy have enough fans to plausibly carry a vote among 101 members of the public, especially when the other jurors are split between four competing nominees with arguably greater merit but less fanatical followings. As numerous commentators have observed, the Hundred Flowers Awards have become the Fans’ Awards. So what now for the Hundred Flowers? Even the People’s Daily agrees that the

organisation faces a ‘crisis’ and reforms are needed. The path of least resistance would be to simply take the public out of the equation, but this would eliminate the main distinction between the Hundred Flowers and the Golden Roosters (which are chosen by a group of industry figures) and make it hard to justify the continued existence of both awards. My hot take: the Hundred Flowers should double down on the public element and follow the example of the MTV Movie Awards, a shamelessly pandering fanfest that gives prizes to Twilight movies and includes categories like ‘Best Kiss.’ But there’s zero chance the powers that be will allow China’s oldest film award to debase itself in such a blatant way—so expect the Hundred Flowers to go on debasing itself in the current way, torn between prestige and the dictates of fanboys and fangirls. myredstar.com

Favourite place in Qingdao? We love Shilaoren, and cycling. We like to take Luna to the beach too. Favourite family activity? Sailing! My husband builds and sells trimarans, so we have easy access to leisure boats. There’s lots of wind here, depending on the season. In Autumn and Spring especially are quite nice. How do you like the Qingdao climate? Maybe if you asked a Canadian, or compared it to other places in China, the winter here isn’t cold, but for French people it is very cold!
Insider tips for Europeans missing home food? We found a guy in Beijing who makes his own cheeses, and they’re really good! Search for “Le Fromager de Pekin” in Taobao; if you contact him, he can deliver all the way to Qingdao! Carrefour have a good wine selection, too.

Are there things you miss about home? Actually, now we’ve managed to find more and more imported products. Zur Bierstube, near the Grand Theatre, has great ham, and now there’s French style sausage at Carrefour, since a couple of weeks ago! October holiday memories? We literally just stayed at home and watched Prison Break on Netflix [they all laugh]. [Christelle] No, no, we went on some bike rides too.

The Rouault family are hardly newbies to Qingdao: Christelle and Cyril moved here 19 years ago, and their three children, Maelle, Nolwenn, and Erwan have all grown up speaking Chinese like natives. Christelle's job is to serve as a link between Bretagne, their home country in France, and Shandong Province, while Cyril manages a boatyard that specialises in building trimarans on Qingdao’s fabulous coast. REDSTAR met with the well-dressed, smiling Rouaults and their excitable dog Luna to hear a little about their family life.

A DIFFERENT STORY IN HISTORY Jenay Rodriguez looks closer than most at the roots of the upcoming US holiday.
C
elebrated on the fourth Thursday of November, Thanksgiving is a time to be with family and friends and share an abundant feast together. It is a time for giving thanks for food, for health, for family, and for friendship. However, the history of Thanksgiving started out quite differently.
Since the fifteenth century, colonial conflict, disease, atrocities and policies of discrimination has shattered the Native American population. In these hundreds of years, more than nine million Native American people have died from violent conflict or from diseases brought by colonialists. - United to End Genocide, 2016
In 1620, a sect of English Christians who wished to escape Europe’s volatile religious environment gathered their funds and

set sail on the Mayflower, Pinto and Santa Maria across the Atlantic to the “new world”, in search of a new life and settlement to practice their religion. They landed in a place which many people now call Plymouth Rock. What fewer people perhaps know is its original name, Patuxet, given to it by the native Wampanoag people
countless generations before. The Native Americans helped the “settlers” to farm in exchange for metal tools. We like to believe that the exchange for provisions between the Native Americans and the English was peaceful. But what revisions of history instead have revealed is that when

WHERE TO HAVE THANKSGIVING DINNER IN QINGDAO? After all is said and done, the central theme of Thanksgiving is lovingly prepared food. So which Qingdao venues are offering a drool-worthy Thanksgiving dinner? REDSTAR have cherry-picked from the city's offerings to compile the list below.
Europeans came to settle in America, the land they chose was violently taken. As more colonialists came, more Native Americans were killed and enslaved for their land.
"It is my purpose utterly to exterminate the Sioux (the Dakota) if I have the power to do so and even if it requires a campaign lasting the whole of next year. Destroy everything belonging to them and force them out to the plains, unless, as I suggest, you can capture them. They are to be treated as maniacs or wild beasts, and by no means as people with whom treaties or compromises can be made.” – Civil war Major-General John Pope, in a letter to Colonel Sibley, 28 September 1862
In 1970, the Massachusetts Department of Commerce asked the descendants of the Wampanoag to give a speech at a Thanksgiving celebration. Frank James (1923–2001) was chosen by his community to represent them and give a speech. However, after the Massachusetts Department of Commerce previewed Mr. James’ speech, they decided they did not wish him to speak. Lookingat his poignant words perhaps demonstrates why: It is with mixed emotion that I stand here to share my thoughts. This is a time of celebration for you, celebrating an anniversary of a beginning for the white
man in America… It is with a heavy heart that I look back upon what happened to my people. Even before the pilgrims landed it was common practice for explorers to capture Indians, take them to Europe and sell them as slaves for 220 shillings apiece. The pilgrims had hardly explored the shores of Cape Cod for four days before they had robbed the graves of my ancestors and stolen their corn and beans. What has happened cannot be changed, but today we must work towards a more humane America, a more Indian America, where men and nature once again are important; where the Indian values of honor, truth, and brotherhood prevail. You the white man are celebrating an anniversary. We the Wampanoag will help you celebrate in the concept of a beginning. It was the beginning of a new life for the Pilgrims. Now, 350 years later it is a beginning of a new determination for the original American: the American Indian. Since 1970, many Native Americans gather at the statue of Massasoit in Plymouth to remember their ancestors. Thanksgiving has developed into an important American holiday, a holiday that represents love, family and friendship. So, as we gather with our loved ones and give thanks for all that we have, let’s also remember those who have sacrificed their lives in search of a better future—and those who lost their lives defending their land and families.

THANKSGIVING TRADITIONS
Abril Hower shares some heartfelt family rituals for the November holiday. My family values our traditions highly. I come from Mexico, my husband comes from the United States of America, and we live with our two children in China. Celebrating our traditions helps us teach our children to know and love their background and to appreciate the best from each country they have called home. Thanksgiving has become one of our favourites as we focus on giving thanks for all the blessings we have received. When fall arrives, we decorate our home with pumpkins, corn kernels, candles, and reminders to give thanks. Each year I try to come up with new ways to help my family express gratitude.

myredstar.com
This year we have a jar, a pencil, and paper by our front door. Throughout the season we all write down what we are grateful for and place the paper in the jar. On Thanksgiving Day we like to invite friends over and share our traditional meal (or, better said, feast). It usually includes turkey or ham, green bean casserole, mashed potatoes, gravy, sweet potato casserole, corn, cranberry sauce, pistachio salad, rolls, and pecan and pumpkin pies. During the meal each person has five corn kernels by their plate, and for each kernel they tell the group one thing they are thankful for. We love hearing what our friends and family are thankful for. At the end of the day, our family will get to read all of the pieces of paper we have put in the jar. I can’t wait to hear them; our jar is almost full. Have a happy Thanksgiving Day!

PREP: 10 MINS COOK: 1 HR READY IN : 1 HR 10 MINS
// QINGDAO FAMILY /
INGREDIENTS
If you have the time to make your own pastry, or simply can’t find a ready-made one, your pie will have a real homemade feel! You’ll need: • 2 cups (240g) low-protein flour (i.e cake flour, not bread flour) • 1 cup (56g) of butter or lard, chilled (so it doesn’t cream into the flour) • 1/3 cup (20ml) water, ice cold • a pinch of salt • 1 teaspoon of baking powder Cut the butter or lard into small pieces, and rub in the flour, salt and baking powder, until it forms a crumbly mix. Try to handle it as little as possible; overhandling will make the final pastry taste tough. Add the water, one tablespoon at a time, mixing gently with a fork. When it forms a pliable dough, roll out quickly but gently to 1/4 inch or less thick. Place on top of your pie tin, and press it carefully into shape. Trim the lip with scissors, leaving a little overhang. You can use leftover dough for pie topping.
• 1 3/4 (414ml) cups white sugar • 1/4 cup (60ml) maple syrup (OR substitute with 1/4 cup packed brown sugar and a 1tbsp water) • 1/4 cup (60ml/56g) butter • 1 tablespoon cold water • 2 teaspoons cornstarch • 3 eggs • 1/4 teaspoon salt • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract • 1 1/4 cups (300ml) chopped pecans • 1 sheet of ready made pie pastry
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). 2. In a medium saucepan, combine the sugar, maple syrup, butter, water, and cornstarch. Bring to a full boil, and remove from heat. 3. In a large bowl, beat the eggs until frothy. Gradually beat in the cooked syrup mixture. Stir in the salt, vanilla, and pecans. Pour into pie shell. 4. Bake in preheated oven for 45 to 50 minutes, or until filling is set.

ARE YOU READY FOR LABOUR? International doula Ruth Greene details exercises to make childbirth easier.
Nine months is a long time, and by the time we get close to that 40-week mark, we are anxious to GET THAT BABY OUT. We’ve read book after book after book. We’ve scoured the internet. We’ve chatted with our friends. We’ve dreamed about every possible scenario of how our baby will be born. What if the baby comes in the taxi? What if I have to have a 40

SQUATTING Squatting is shown to help stretch the perineum and open the pelvis. Being able to squat comfortably and properly takes practice. Feet should be flat on the ground and open in a “V” shape. Lower yourself gently into the squat by bending at the knees. At first, you may want to hold on to something to keep your balance. When you stand up, lift your bottom first into the air and then roll up from the waist. While this is not the most flattering exercise (you can do this exercise in private if you prefer), it will strengthen your pelvic area and stretch the muscles in preparation for birth. Some people even prefer to spend much of their labour in this position. FLOOR SITTING Frequently known as “criss-cross apple sauce”, sitting on the floor is a great position for a pregnant woman. It opens up the hips, cradles the baby forward in the pelvis, and builds back muscles. Whenever possible, refuse the offered chair and choose a spot on the floor. If your back can’t handle the lack of a back rest, scoot back against your partner's legs or a nearby couch. Just pay attention to make sure your uterus is resting forward. This will not only keep the baby off your backbone, it will gently stretch your hips, hopefully making
you more comfortable during pregnancy and preparing your hips for labour. WALKING Get up and move! Remember that marathon you’re running at the end of these 40 weeks? While many of us are not up for a regular cardiac workout in preparation for birth (but if you are and have the okay from your physician, go for it!), brisk walking can help strengthen our lungs, build our endurance, and keep us in basic good shape. Start with a goal of one 10-15 minute walk each day and slowly increase it to 2-3 brisk walks. Remember, any exercise you do shouldn’t wear you out. If you feel overwhelmingly exhausted after the walk, take it easier next time. You should feel energised and rejuvenated after your exercise, which is a nice effect during those months that we feel so heavy and all we want to do is sleep. Invite your partner along and dream together about the coming baby while you walk! PELVIC TILTS This is a great activity to do right before you go to sleep, as it will help get baby more comfortable in your pelvis and therefore help you get a better night’s sleep! On your hands and knees on the bed (make sure you’ve brushed teeth and
// QINGDAO FAMILY /
completely prepared for sleep!), gently rock your hips upwards toward the ceiling, then lower towards the ground. Don’t overarch your back, but focus on gently tilting your hips up and down. Repeat ten times. This rocks the baby and uterus forward in the pelvis and out from between the legs, relieving back ache and also that heavy pressure between the legs! As with squatting, this is a great position for labour as well, especially for women who face intense back labour. Practicing it now not only makes you more comfortable while you wait, but is good preparation for labour itself. After you have completed your set of ten, gently roll to your side on the bed and find your best sleeping position. Make sure your hips are not stacked (one hip should be in front of the other) and place an extra pillow beneath your top knee.
Each of these activities can and should be done daily for several months leading up to your due date, or even throughout the whole pregnancy. Remember, you can’t prepare for a marathon in a week. As always, check with your doctor to make sure you don’t have any complications. Remember, the goal is to feel rested, energised, and prepared, so keep any exercise you do at a pace you can manage.

First Venefit performed in Qingdao United Family Hospital
Now, doctors offer this new varicose veins treatment at the Qingdao United Family Hospital. This procedure is minimally invasive, an outpatient vein treatment procedure performed by vascular surgeons in QDU. A catheter called a ClosureFAST is inserted into the vein after making a small incision, where heat is delivered to the vein wall. This thermal energy shrinks the vein wall and seals the vein closed. The blood is then transferred to the healthy veins in the legs. After the diseased vein is closed, nearby healthy veins take over and empty the blood from the legs. Once normal blood flow is reestablished, symptoms quickly improve. The procedure is less painful than some options, usually leaves the patient with little, if any, bruising, scarring or swelling, and most patients can return to normal activities almost immediately. The first Venefit Procedure in Jiaozhou Peninsula was successfully performed at Qingdao United Family Hospital (QUF) on 20 August 2016. The hospital announced that the patients around Jiaozhou Peninsula would find relief from varicose veins at QDU. QDU first officially started cooperation with Dr. Smile Medical Group in order to offer internationally-advanced methods for personalized treatment of varicose veins.
N
early 25% of the global adult population is afflicted with chronic venous insufficiency. This condition is more commonly found in women than in men, but either sex can be affected. For some people, varicose veins are simply unsightly and unappealing, but for others, the condition causes a significant amount of pain and discomfort on a daily basis, with some of the more persistent symptoms including swelling, throbbing and leg cramps. Serious complications can also develop over time, such as phlebitis (vein inflammation), blood clots, dermatitis, and painful vein ulcers that in extreme cases can even lead to amputation. In the past, vein-stripping surgery was required, however, this procedure caused intense pain. Some people hesitate to have their varicose veins evaluated and
42

treated due to concerns about pain, recovery times, potential scarring and expenses. Fortunately, for most people, many of those concerns can be alleviated. One of the most innovative treatments available to treat varicose veins is the minimally-invasive Venefit (Radiofrequency Ablation of the Vein). Not only are pain and scarring minimized, but recovery times are typically much faster. Patients usually walk out the door shortly after the surgery. 98% of Venefit patients would recommend the treatment to a friend or family member with similar leg vein problems. As far as cost is concerned, if an individual has varicose veins severe enough to need surgical treatment, it is usually considered to be a medical condition—in many cases, this means that medical insurance will cover the cost.
Dr. Zhang Gaoxiang, expert surgeon, and Professor Zhang Qiang, founder of Dr. Smile Medical Group, were the two who performed the Venefit Procedure on the local Qingdao patient. The surgery lasted for half an hour, the patient was able to walk soon afterwards, was discharged in the afternoon, and the patient and his family were very satisfied with the operation. This surgery has captivated media and public attention. The patients who suffer from varicose veins can now receive this world-class professional treatment at Qingdao Family Healthcare Hospital. QDU strives to build a medical platform that is compatible with internationallyaccepted standards, and to adopt qualified external medical resources geared towards improving the levels of medical technology both in the hospital and on the Jiaozhou Peninsula. HILTON COMES TO
JINAN With an astounding 540 locations in 78 countries, Hilton Hotels and Resorts is as international as a company can get. Hilton has its feet firmly on the ground in China, and the stunning Hilton Jinan South Hotel and Residences marks their latest development. Georgia Leach speaks to the General Manager, Mr. Daniel Alcaraz, about his background, China’s hotel industry, and the vision for the Hilton Jinan South Hotel and Residences.
What made you decide to leave Europe for China? I started at the Hilton in Barcelona in 2007, and at that time I was Food and Beverage Manager. After a couple of years there, I realised that if I ever wanted to develop my career and reach the position of General Manager quickly, I would have to be internationally mobile, so I decided to come to Asia. What makes the Asian hotel market different to that of Europe? There are some major differences between the two markets. The first one is manpower: in this hotel we have 420 rooms and will soon have 350 team members—in Europe you could never do that, you could never be profitable. Secondly, there is an extreme shortage of highly-qualified hospitality staff in China right now. In Europe, the service industry has been going for hundreds of
years, so it’s not unusual to see a waiter or concierge who has been doing his job for the past 50 years. What makes the Hilton Jinan South Hotel & Residences different from the other hotels? There is actually something very special: this is the first Hilton in China to come with a Residences product, that is serviced apartments—one, two or three bedrooms, with a fully-equipped kitchen. In five-star hotels, there is a need for extended stay rooms, for "permanent’ guests". Other fivestar hotels have made minor renovations in their rooms to cater for these "permanent" guests, but this is no match for our Residences product. What do you think is your most important job as a General Manager? In my opinion, one of the key requirements is to be creative! Of course, you have to
be hardworking, friendly and so on…but I believe it is extremely important to be creative with your guests, your staff, your owners, to provide something which has not been done before. You must also be creative in problem-solving; as General Manager, you encounter a lot of problems, trust me! You need to find new ways of solving problems and doing business, making things cheaper, more efficient, faster, with better technology. What’s special about the Hilton brand? Everyone knows the name Hilton, it’s a very recognised and influential brand. We are a very large company, so obviously there is a company culture, where we empower our team members to do what needs to be done to provide the best service for our guests. We try to provide the best for our team, so they can be comfortable and happy and therefore provide the best quality of service. Jianghu Laozao provide a wide variety of hotpot dishes, including vegetables, meat and a multitude of mushrooms, so don’t be shy when ordering! We also love their very practical extra-long chopsticks, perfect for nimbly reaching over people to grab whichever tasty morsel you have set your eyes on. Hotpot up, guys! PEKING DUCK
Shan Gou Gou
QUAN JU DE
山沟沟
全聚德 By Phil
By Han Shui Ji Bei
On the right hand side of Fenghe square, a large yellow plastic duck signposts the famous Quan Ju De. Upstairs you find a large, airy room with a busy vibe. Of course the waiter takes an order of Tsingtaos, but here, it’s all about the duck. The birds are cooked in special ovens, and then carved at your table by an expert ‘duck butcher’, while his apprentice looks on solemnly. Served with the usual accompaniments of pancakes, cucumber, spring onions, and a dollop of gorgeous plum sauce, this duck melts in your mouth. There was plenty to go round the 4 of us (helped by the obligatory vegetarian not taking her share). Given the location it was always going to be relatively pricey, but well worth a visit.
As declared on Game of Thrones, winter is coming, and Chinese people have a special way to get through through the winter—drinking lamb gravy.

BAIYAN MI CHANG 白岩米肠
I visit Baiyan restaurant when I miss my Korean food! Let me introduce the leg of pork… it has so much flavour, it sticks to every side of your mouth, it’s delicious. I don’t think you can imagine how good this food is! If you don’t book to eat here, I don’t think you can eat anything like it again. Having dinner here with beer and soju is like being in heaven. You should also try their pig hocks (jok bal)!
Shan Gou Gou ( 山沟沟 ) is a nice Chinese restaurant that specialises in lamb gravy and chicken dishes. Lamb gravy warms your body and keeps you healthy. The chicken served here is calledd “unmarried” chicken, which means they supposedly are virgin chickens, with the most delicious meat. Other dishes worth recommending are 大葱炒山鸡蛋 (green onions with eggs) and 煎饼卷大葱 (Chinese pancakes with vegetables and sauce) . The average price per person here is pretty good too, at about 50 RMB.

The top tourist attractions are without doubt Golden and Silver beaches, each with longer, sandier and less-spoilt stretches than any of those in Qingdao's downtown.

The district now has a direct link to Qingdao's old town - the Jiaozhouwan tunnel has cut journey times to around 20 minutes and more or less put the old ferry terminal out of business. Jiaonan, to the north, is linked to the eastern municipality by the longest bridge in the world (41.58km, completed in June 2011).

Despite boasting the best beaches in Qingdao Municipality, Huangdao has for recent years played a quiet second fiddle to the hustle, bustle and commercialism of the downtown area. Recently however, changes in the city's infrastructure are set to fling this sleepy suburb into the 21st century.
