Asked why it stopped providing the 15-yuan boxes on all high-speed trains, the China Railway Corporation said the decision was about "catering to the diverse demands of passengers", not cutting the most affordable options, of which, it said, many cost even less than 10 yuan.

China is mulling over a midnight gaming ban to combat internet addiction among teenagers. If the ban is passed, those below the age of 18 will not be able to play online games between 12 am and 8 am in China's omnipresent "Wangbas" or Internet Bars, many of which are open 24 hours.

Cambodia is a popular paradise destination of Asia, but its rolling beaches and ancient temples are shadowed by a painful history. Paul Finkbeiner and Suki Li share their takes on this precious, beautiful country.

hird world, genocide, and ancient temples. For some people, a place like that doesn’t seem like an ideal vacation. But for me and my two Chinese friends, Queenie and Ring, it was perfect – an affordable, tropical paradise. During our stay in Cambodia, we planned to visit Phnom Penh, the capital, then travel to Sihanoukville, a beach town, and end at Siem Reap, home to the ancient temple Angkor Wat. Phnom Penh was busy, but not like China. There are many more tuk-tuks and motorcycles than cars or buses, with little public transportation and hardly any high-rise buildings until we entered the downtown area. China was clearly investing. Most construction projects were Chinesefinanced, and there were Chinese restaurants and businesses scattered throughout the city. But we were here to experience Cambodia, so we hired a tuk-tuk driver to take us to the Royal Palace, a complex similar to the Forbidden City where the Cambodian royalty lived. Many buildings seemed to me like Buddhist versions of European cathedrals, with rooves covered in delicate carvings of 7-headed snakes, dragons, and Buddhist gods. Most had a central spire that towered over the building. Buddhism is ubiquitous, and there was certain reverence I hadn’t expected. When we entered a temple, we had to remove our shoes and step over the wooden entrance to walk on the carpeted floor. Many people offered incense or money to the Buddhist gods inside.

fish swimming around spongy rocks, tubular plants, and spiky sea urchins. The water wasn’t transparent, but it was close enough. The fish seemed unperturbed by our presence unless I tried touching them. Perhaps they’re used to dozens of snorkelers invading their reef each week. I would have snorkelled for hours but my lungs were too weak, and I was terrified I’d accidentally pierce my foot on a sea urchin. So after an hour, we climbed back into the boat and headed back to the coast. I may not have seen a shark or octopus, but the underwater world had been mesmerising.

The next day we visited some missionaries at Bloom, who ran a bakery and training centre that employed girls rescued from sex trafficking. Their cakes were delicious; they proudly told us that they had baked cakes for Cambodia’s royalty before. After sampling some delicious cupcakes, we headed to the considerably less sweet Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, a former high school used as a gruesome prison for opposers of the Khmer Rouge regime. The atrocities it committed left deep scars on the nation, as well as economic and social ruin. Prisoners here were chained to a metal bar and slept on metal beds. Their toilet was an empty munitions box. The cruelty of the guards was inhuman. Some dunked prisoners’ heads in excrement if they fell unconscious during a beating; others would whip, drown, or electrocute their victims. Any who survived torture were sent to the “Killing Fields” to be executed en masse. Thousands upon thousands of nameless bodies lie there in graves today. Phnom Penh had been sobering, and we were ready to relax our bodies and minds at Sihanoukville. Our tuk-tuk driver took us to Otres Beach, a long strip of sand that curled around the coast, with oceanfront properties a few feet from the waves, where we stayed to watched the spreading redorange sunset, and snorkelled the next day. I was amazed by the alien world thriving underwater. There were dozens of striped

The next day we traveled to Siem Reap to see Angkor Wat, a massive temple complex built over 1,000 years ago by the Khmer Empire. It was worth the $40 entrance fee. The paved stone entrance walkway took us across a moat that surrounded the whole temple. Then we entered a massive stone gate that was a prelude to the main attraction. We saw five spires rising up from the temple courtyard, and once inside, we found Buddhist gods carved into pillars, walls, and ceilings. The monsoon rains had left their mark on them, but many were still intact. Not all the temples were as well-preserved, with the unstoppable hand of time clearly visible in many. Another one we visited had been gouged and scarred by trees, whose roots had toppled walls, crushed roofs, and destroyed whole sections of the temple. Man had built a work of art, but it seemed clear that nature and time would always prevail. Over the next two days, we saw more temples than I had seen for years. One I remember well had 4-faced Buddha heads on each tower. I couldn’t tell if they were different or not, but they did seem to smile beatifically at me. Another was a miniaturised Hindu temple built with red sandstone, that had intricate carvings of various Hindu gods, most of whom I wouldn’t want to meet in a dark alley. Angkor Wat made Cambodia great, and the Khmer Rouge nearly destroyed it. But now it is on the rebound. With time, I hope it fully heals from its wounds. myredstar.com

ravelling in Cambodia gives you complex feelings. It’s a paradise island for tourists to explore and enjoy, but is arguably most famous for its heartbreaking history. Landmine victims across the country, begging for a living and struggling with their lives, are continuous reminders of a miserable past, and you can't help questioning yourself: is it wrong to pursue art and enjoyment here? Joseph Mussomeli, the former U.S. Ambassador, once said “Be careful, because Cambodia is the most dangerous place you will ever visit. You will fall in love with it, and eventually it will break your heart." My art-filled journey from Siem Reap to Phnom Penh was indeed a trip beginning with fantasy and ending with deep sorrow. The sunrise and sunset in Angkor Angkor Wat is where the heart of the great Khmer empire once beat vibrantly, and today represents both its glory and its downfall. Thousands of smiling faces can be found in the stone remains. These faces, after seeing all the blood and wars, the massacres in both the 15th and 20th centuries, continue to smile. I wondered, do they also cry? Do their smiles really indicate a kind of realisation? What is it that has given these happy faces their endurance? You may find the answer in the sunrise. The Khmer architects knew and used sunlight expertly, seen particularly in the sunrise at Bayon, where over a hundred smiles on forty-nine pagodas appear in the dawn one after another. When the three major pagodas of Angkor Wat–which you can also find on Cambodia’s national flag–are being lit, it feels as if the Khmer empire is resurrected. They can’t have imagined that their

/ TRAVEL // 广告 • 旅游 great empire would come to an end while these magnificent pagodas were being constructed, and yet these Angkor pagodas have become the empire’s tombstones, a moss-covered reminder that the destiny of everything is to end. Plan a sunset at Neak Pean. This place is more a construction of space than of a building. It creates emptiness instead of existence. Just like the Chinese character for Buddha 佛 signifies nonbeing: the right hand side means “not”, and the left side means “man/person”. 720 years ago, in August 1296, when Angkor was said to have been one of the largest and wealthiest metropolises of Southeast Asia, Zhou Daguan of a Chinese legation reached the Khmer capital and remained there for nearly a year during the reign of King Indravarman III (1295-

1308). He wrote a book called "The Customs of Cambodia”, an insight into the world of 13th century Angkor. He mentions the dead: "No coffins are used for the dead; they are laid out on straw matting and covered over with cloth." Compared to the Egyptians, for example, Khmer people recognised the value of letting go. In search of the living goddesses in theatres The Cambodian Living Arts in Phnom Penh allows you to meet the ‘living goddesses’. Here the Hindu goddesses (Apsara) sculptures dancing on the walls of Angkor Wat are brought to life in the theatre. During the dance, their fingers blossom like petals. When these blossoms of fingers are placed in front of their waists (you can always see this in the sculptures), it indicates the origin of life. When their fingers point down, it indicates the withering of flowers. Each elegant movement expresses the tolerance and peacefulness of Cambodian beliefs. The unbearable heaviness of art

In the Tuol Sleng Museum in Phnom Penh, I saw the works of Cambodian artist Vann Nath. Tuol Sleng was once a high school where students' laughter filled the

corridors. In 1975, the Khmer Rouge turned it into a secret prison (S-21) where more than 14,000 men, women and children were tortured and executed. Vann Nath is one of only a handful of people who survived. He was beaten, tortured and almost starved to death, but thanks to his prior training as an artist, he was not killed: instead he was put to work painting portraits of Pol Pot, the leader of the regime’s experiment in radical Maoism. When Vietnamese troops entered the capital city in January 1979, toppling the Khmer Rouge regime, Vann Nath escaped. Later that year, when a Genocide Museum was created on the grounds of the former prison, Vann Nath went to work there, and painted scenes of prison life under the Khmer Rouge. These paintings are nothing like the art in Angkor. They are not beautiful at all. They are too heavy to enjoy looking at. But art never only has goddesses and angels, it also confronts evil. These paintings are so painful and powerful. Just as happiness doesn't always last, neither does pain. If Siem Reap showed me the decline of a great empire, I hope Phnom Penh shows the hope of a rising nation. The Khmer smiles come up in my mind again. One of the goddesses said: this is what we call the causal loop.

“What really scares me is that he seems to have no problem at all in dismissing science and proven facts in favour of his opinions, then arguing that his opinions are really the facts.” I’m speaking with Chantha, a 38-year-old Cambodian woman, and, unsurprisingly, she is referring to the 45th President of the United States. Since President Trump took office on January 20, his “presidential” actions have been the top news story in countries all over the world. When I was in Cambodia and Malaysia, every local that I met, when they found out I was American, wanted to ask me if I had heard about his latest misstep. I actually first heard about the Trump administration’s “alternative facts” from a Malaysian man making conversation in a coffee shop. Chantha goes on to recount her early childhood in a nation devastated by the Khmer Rouge genocide. Chief among the victims were anyone who was educated. Chantha herself attended university in Phnom Penh and now runs a guest house in Siem Reap. She tells me that she loves interacting with the many American tourists that visit Angkor Wat and stay at her guest house each year. She worries that President Trump is making the world a more dangerous place and it will eventually trickle down to places like Cambodia. It’s a sobering thought when someone from one of the poorest countries in the world is telling you that she worries for the citizens of the world’s largest superpower. Traveling through Kuala Lumpur, I had similar experiences. Malaysia is a Muslim country, but one that promotes freedom of religion. The country is also ethnically diverse, with the population mostly split between Malay, Chinese, and Indian.

Christmas, Lunar New Year, and Diwali are all national holidays, as are Muslim holy days. The cultures don’t just coexist; they’re in harmony. I saw several Indians and Muslims celebrating the traditionally East Asian Lunar New Year while I was there. On a train to the Batu Caves north of the city, I sat next to Sharif, a 72-yearold Muslim man. He also worried about President Trump, especially his treatment of Muslims and the effects that will be felt worldwide. He told me that he felt there is a big misconception in the US that right now it is Islam versus the West, when in reality, the 1.5 billion Muslims on this planet are going through times of great ideological differences amongst themselves. He explained that many Muslims, especially in southeast Asia, become frustrated with the US for playing multiple sides of the Muslim debate, namely taking a strong anti-terrorist stance when pushing away countries like Syria and Yemen, but paradoxically embracing the Wahhabi of Saudi Arabia, who many believe responsible for much of the promulgation of radical Islam. Sharif thought Kuala Lumpur should be looked to as an example of how many different cultures and religions can live together peacefully. “We have Muslims, Christians, Hindus, Buddhists, and we all get along here. They say America is the melting pot, but Malaysia is really.” Darren, 40, a Christian, agrees, “Even within the different cultures of Malaysia there are many subcultures and this has brought about diversity for everyone to enjoy. It’s been a way of life here, that Malaysians celebrate the respective racial cultures throughout the year, and it’s always a time of bonding.”

When I asked Darren if he ever felt marginalised, or that the country was moving toward an Islamic Theocracy—61% of the country is Muslim and 86% of Muslims there think Sharia Law should be the law of the land—he gave me an emphatic ‘no’, explaining that the Malaysian constitution specifically protects against a theocracy and clearly spells out their freedom of religion. While Islam is the official state religion, the constitution also states that “other religions may be practiced in peace and harmony.” In fact, Malaysia has two separate, parallel justice systems, one for Muslims which operates in Syariah Courts and dictates Sharia, and the second for non-Muslims that falls under the laws created by the elected Parliament. In fairness, Malaysia’s religious equality has its flaws, mainly with regards to Judaism, which is not recognised as a religion. Any materials or speeches about Zionism or that allude to the right of Israel to exist as a state are expressly illegal and can be punished by fine and a prison sentence. There are no perfect systems or universal answers, but while my own country has elected a xenophobic fear-monger, who seems to believe that the facts are whatever he decides they are, the perspectives of people who have lived through genocide and whose country celebrates religious diversity have a powerful resonance.

THE SECOND ANNUAL GOLDEN REDSTAR MOVIE AWARDS Josh Martin looks back on China’s 2016 movies. The Chinese year in film ended on a bum note, with three poorlyreceived would-be blockbusters: Zhang Yimou’s The Great Wall, the Jackie Chan vehicle Railroad Tigers, and the Wong Kar-waiproduced See You Tomorrow. Criticism aside, all three performed at least adequately at the box office, but this was cold comfort in 2016. In the past, Chinese producers could brush off any complaints about quality by pointing to the country’s phenomenal boxoffice growth, which has typically hovered around 50% a year for the last decade. But that gravy train has come to a crashing halt more spectacular than anything in Railroad Tigers, as 2016 revenues grew by a piddling 3.7, down from 49% the year before. The industry and its observers are still combing the wreckage for signs of what went wrong. Chinese film buffs claimed vindication, pointing to their repeated predictions (or, perhaps, their wishes) that audiences would eventually tire of the industry’s substandard offerings. This victory lap may prove premature, but 2016 certainly did few favours for the film sector’s overall reputation, with even the seemingly guaranteed hits Railroad Tigers and Ip Man 3 tainted by box-office fraud. Can Chinese cinema improve its reputation in 2017? Perhaps—but then we’d have fewer candidates for our annual Golden REDSTAR Film Awards, celebrating the less savoury aspects of what remains one of the world’s liveliest and strangest film scenes.

Ye moved on to a new post at Huayi Brothers, the mainland’s oldest privately-owned film studio. Wanda reacted to the move by thanking Ye for his service and wishing him the best of luck in his future endeavours... ha ha, just kidding. Wanda responded by slashing bookings for Huayi’s films in the Wanda cinema chain, the largest in the country. Particularly affected was the animated release Rock Dog, directed by Pixar veteran Ash Brannon. Rock Dog received just seven opening-day screenings in Wanda cinemas, all outside of ‘prime time.’ The project’s creator, musician Zheng Jun, was asked about the situation at a press event; Zheng plaintively told the translator not to relay the question to Brannon, explaining that ‘I don’t want him to think Chinese people can be like this.’ The scandal reflects the darker side of China’s verticallyintegrated film sector, which permits studios to run their own theatres and creates the opportunity for favourable treatment of their own product—or unfavourable treatment for that of their rivals.

In 2014, Vincent Zhou—a young executive at Shanghai Media Group—made his directorial debut with Last Flight, about a mysterious creature menacing the passengers of a red-eye international flight. The movie was savaged by critics and died a quick death at the box office, but the filmmakers likely blamed its poor performance on an outside factor: the disappearance of Malaysia Air Flight 370 just before the intended release, which compelled the studio to drastically scale back its marketing efforts. So Zhou pushed ahead with the sequel-cum-remake Lost in the Pacific, which followed the AlienAliens pattern by replacing the original’s single mutant cat (no, really) with a small army of the beasties. To amp up the international star power, the sequel also added ex-Superman Brandon Routh, where Last Flight had to make do with Ed Westwick of Gossip Girl sorta-fame. Alas, any dreams of a global release faded when the trailer was roundly mocked at the 2015 Toronto Film Festival, and the film limped into Chinese cinemas last January, drawing less money than its predecessor. But Vincent Zhou retains his position at Shanghai Media, so fingers crossed we get a third movie about an airline besieged by man-eating cats, perhaps starring Taylor Lautner or a former Backstreet Boy.

WEIRDEST TREND Revisionist Takes on The Ugly Duckling In July, Chinese kids were treated/subjected to The Adventures of the Ugly Duckling, an animated film in which the title character is reimagined as a robot duck who falls from the Moon, pursued by an evil scientist who plans to use him as a bomb. In October,

MOST SHAMELESS CASH-IN Wrong Path, a.k.a. Deadpool Lost Chinese filmmakers aren’t shy about exploiting the popularity of certain foreign films. The Death Note, released in May, was an in-name-only knockoff of the hit Japanese franchise, while the ‘big internet movie’ Mad Shelia received international attention for its unsubtle similarities to Mad Max: Fury Road. Last January, the Hollywood superhero comedy Deadpool was rejected by the censors in Beijing, scotching plans for a mainland release. Enter Wrong Path—sometimes known as Deadpool Lost, a literal translation from the Chinese—which hit the web two months later. The 61-minute film is a predictably amateurish crime comedy about a young hood seeking a hidden $5 million stash. What does any of this have to do with Deadpool? Two things: 1) the title and 2) a poster depicting a gun-toting character in a Deadpool mask, something that never appears in the actual movie. With Deadpool 2 in the pipeline for 2018, we look forward to Wrong Path 2, which will presumably take the form of a musical comedy.

GOING IT SOLO IN NORWAY Ellie Wolverson recounts a trip into the wilderness of Norway that turned into a test of strength.

n the middle of September I boarded the plane to Oslo with my fingers crossed, 42 freeze dried meals, 4 kg of dried fruit and 28 Mars bars. Ahead of me I had two weeks completely self sufficient in the Norwegian wilderness, and hopefully some reindeer. All my friends said I was an idiot; I hoped I wasn’t. I planned to walk a 190km round route through one of Norway's most beautiful national parks, collecting data for my dissertation as I went. I hitchhiked to the town nearest the national park, falling a little bit in love with everyone who gave me a lift. I had literally everything I needed, and Frank Ocean's new album to listen to. I felt pretty optimistic. I camped for two nights at a mountain hut called Spiterstulen, between the two highest mountains in Northern Europe, hiking during the day and researching in the evening, before heading into the wilderness proper. The weather was incredible for late September, revealing sublime autumnal mountains that no camera could do justice to. The next week was wonderful, with good weather, easy navigation and suitable ground each night for pitching my tent, which I would do at around six, then put the stove on and wolf down one of the freeze dried meals, listening to a podcast. There's a limit to the amount of hours you can listen to a podcast, though, and how many things you can think of to entertain yourself. One thing I did discover was that I can fit 123 raisins in my mouth. I sat in the porch of my tent and stared out at the fjords and mountain peaks, feeling blessed to be experiencing it all. It really was a wilderness. I hadn’t seen any people for days. I camped by a river one night, and in the morning unzipped my tent to see a herd of reindeer, that I watched graze as I ate my porridge. They were beautiful, and I wished I had more than my crappy iPhone to take photos. After that things went downhill. It rained continuously, and walking against the wind was exhausting. The gusts were so strong my tent poles buckled and I didn't sleep much as I got up hourly to check the tent was securely pegged. I started to fall over a lot as the terrain was very

the surface, hooking my hand through my rucksack strap and panicking my way to the other side. I climbed the couple of metres up the side of the gorge and then went into shock, struggling to strip out of my soaking clothes and pitch my tent to assess the damage, which I did in my sleeping bag, cradling a hot chocolate. The finger I’d used to hook my rucksack out was blue and at a horrible angle, and the rest of my body felt badly bruised. I felt lucky to be alive. rocky and slippery. Once I landed on my face, which gave me black eye and broke my glasses. I taped them together with medical tape and couldn’t help crying. As I went higher up the mountains, I became more apprehensive, but I was around halfway and didn't really want to turn back. This was when I had my first accident. I needed to cross a river but its bridge was completely broken. It flowed through quite a steep gorge so there wasn't really anywhere easy to cross, but I decided to try, which looking back was a huge mistake. The river was much deeper and more powerful than I thought and the glacial water took my breath away. My rucksack weighed me down and I was battered against the sides of the gorge. I managed to unclip my rucksack and get to

The next day the weather cleared. I ached all over and walking was tiring, but the sunset that night was the best I’ve ever seen. I camped high up and saw all the sun’s colours illuminated in the snow, and forgot the pain I was in for a while. Sadly it didn’t last; the following day, constant mist and fog made navigation impossible, and worsened into a snowstorm. I realised I was lost. In the morning the storm had stopped and I could work out where I was, but I was utterly demoralised. I hadn't seen or spoken to anyone for over a week and all I wanted was for my Dad to come and take me home. Then I had my big accident. I was climbing a difficult ridge when I lost my footing and fell two or three metres, landing badly on my left side, and I lost consciousness. When

I came to, I tried to put on my backpack to continue walking, but passed out again. I’d landed on the same side where I’d broken my clavicle and some ribs previously and it felt like I'd done the same again. Where I’d fallen there wasn't anywhere flat to put up the tent, so I dosed up with the last of my painkillers and climbed the same section again to find flatter ground. Doing anything was agony. I couldn't wear my rucksack properly and even breathing was excruciating. I gave up my planned route and headed to the nearest mountain hut, only 30km away, but I was in so much pain that I had to stop every few metres, walking at less that 2kmph. The song “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” came on, and I’ve never hated a song more in my life. Norway had plenty of mountains that were more than high enough. The four days it took me to to walk to the hut were some of the worst of my life. I broke down when I saw that there were people there. Two very nice but very racist Swedish men gave me a lift all the way to Oslo. We stopped in a McDonalds where I used the wifi to contact my family for the first time in two weeks. HOW AMERICA’S NEW PRESIDENT COULD BOOST CHINA’S ECONOMY

Matilda Fors speculates on the effects of changes in world trade partnerships.

ll over the world, people watched wide-eyed as political loose cannon Donald Trump won state after state on November 9th. Amid shellshocked attempts to comprehend the reasons for and implications of his election, one thing seems certain: President Trump’s policies will refurnish the global scene. In the first days of his presidency, President Trump made a point of proving himself a man of action. Through a dozen executive orders he has, among other things, dismantled Obama’s Affordable Care Act and introduced a much-debated travel ban from people from seven Muslimmajority countries. His campaign slogan,

”Make America Great Again” has become synonymous with the ambition of sparking up industries lost to lower-wage countries or through environmental regulation. The major problems, according to Trump, are free trade agreements such as NAFTA (between Mexico, the U.S. and Canada) and TPP (the Trans-Pacific Partnership, involving twelve countries such as Japan, Chile, the U.S., Singapore and Australia). Trump has signed an order to leave the TPP, bringing down the sandcastle that had taken seven years of negotiating to build, and is claiming to want to “renegotiate" NAFTA. In a series of dubious statements he has also pointed specifically at China, blaming its booming economy for the loss of American

jobs. Trump’s solutions to the issue are as blunt as they are severe; he suggests 45% tariffs on all imports from China. Should Trump follow through with his plans for U.S. self-sufficiency, he might garner the exact opposite of what he is hoping for. Several experts have said that blocking trade with China and other Asian nations will actually do more damage to America’s economy than China’s. The TPP—which does not include China—was designed in order for the U.S. to establish a firm presence in the burgeoning Asia Pacific region. With it dismantled, Beijing can easily turn to an alternative free trade agreement, for which formal negotiations

began in 2012: the Regional Comprehensive Economical Partnership (RCEP), which would cement China’s role as an economic superpower among the 10 ASEAN economies as well as those of India, South Korea, Japan, Australia and New Zealand. America’s withdrawal from international trade would leave huge gaps in global markets, that China is willing and able to fill. In a recent World Economic Forum meeting in Davos, Switzerland, China’s president Xi Jinping made it clear that China is committed to enforcing global free trade, in order to further international stability as well as connectivity. His engagement in the international trade community has received much appreciation, where Trump’s

policies are met with overall skepticism. Trump boasts that the U.S. is at the top of the economical food chain, but what he fails to realise is the matter of dependency works both ways. Many big American companies (Apple, Boeing, General Motors and Starbucks, to name a few) have major stakes in China, with sales there accounting for a massive 22% of Apple’s revenue last fiscal year. According to a Boeing prognosis, China’s domestic aviation market will be the biggest in the world by 2035. Boeing and European-owned Airbus currently have a duopoly of the world of airplane manufacturing, and compete fiercely over the slightest market share. The Chinese market is one that neither can afford to miss out on—a competition certainly not made easier for Boeing by enforcement of high tariffs and other limitations. But not even China’s contribution to the growth of American companies accurately displays the countries’ interdependency. According to statistics from the U.S. Census Bureau, the U.S.

has a trade deficit with China of about $347 billion. That means that the U.S. is importing Chinese goods to a value of $347 billion more than what it exports. Some argue that “value-added approach”— a statistical theory suggesting that the value of an imported product should be divided amongst its constituent parts, including raw materials, intellectual property and technology—decreases the real trade deficit. For example, an iPhone manufactured in China uses American technology and design. When the assembled iPhone is shipped back to the U.S., its total value is regarded as import value, though part of the worth is originally American. Adjusted to this theory, economists at the Dallas Federal Reserve Bank claim that the trade deficit decreases by a third; but even the resulting smaller deficit, at $229 billion, is roughly the size of Finland’s GDP. It appears globalisation is a one-way street, where turning back to a more protectionist point of view might prove futile. Now more than ever, we need each other to create a sustainable future. With American politics more centred around interior affairs, China is stepping up to the challenge of becoming the world’s dominant economic player. The Hash House Harriers (aka The Hash or HHH), Qingdao’s ‘drinking club with a running problem’, are back with their Staircase Run 2017! Starting way back in 2009, the race goes up the Crowne Plaza hotel stairs, over 40 stories all the way to the top floor. The quick reach the top in 7 minutes; the race record is an amazing 4 minutes and 40 seconds. No-one minds being a tail-ender though, as it's all to support charity. But it’s not all about the running! Spectators and finishers stay refreshed with beer and other drinks while groups take their turn at the race. Supporters and sponsors donate prizes and hand out presents to runners and spectators alike. 2017’s donated prizes are worth thousands of RMB! Luckily for the average runner, not only the fastest will be rewarded: prizes are handed out to the “worst dressed”, "best dressed", “slowest”, “oldest”, and more. All money raised this year will be donated to the I-Foundation Of Qingdao General Charity Institution ( 青岛市慈善总会爱基金 ), run mostly by Chinese volunteers and

TRANSCENDENCE OF NORMAL LIFE Dual Exhibition of Liu Shouxiang and Hou Wei

Yanjie Liu brings the highlights of Qingdao’s art scene to REDSTAR.

Jia Li art space has kept a low profile since opening in May 2016, but it houses beautiful decor and a brilliant collection. It’s spread across six floors of building C1, Ji Di Jin An ( 极地金岸 ), which sits overlooking the sea by a small and peaceful Maidao fishing port. At present, Jia Li is exhibiting watercolours and tempera on wood by Liu Shouxiang and Hou Wei, with a whole floor for each artist. Liu Shouxiang, professor and director of Hubei Art Academy’s watercolour department, is widely known for his still life and landscape watercolours; Hou Wei, a professor at the Art Academy of Shanghai Normal University, is famous for his ‘dust’ series, painting objects of everyday life coated with a thick layer of dust, in watercolour or tempera (paint

mixed with an emulsifier that allows it to be painted on wood). The result is enigmatic and thought provoking, questioning the objects’ stories as well as wider ideas of materialism and waste. The gallery’s second floor houses their own art collection throughout the year, mainly watercolour paintings and prints including a few prints of Picasso and Salvador Dali.

Tharlo

Directed by Pema Tseden Josh Martin is impressed by this Tibetan release.

he shabby treatment of independent and arthouse movies is the subject of endless hand-wringing in China, nearly all of it justified. But despite their ongoing struggles to secure screenings, the prospects for such fare are arguably brighter than ever. Case in point: Tharlo, the sixth feature by the internationally-acclaimed Pema Tseden, was his first to receive a commercial release in China. That in itself constitutes a small breakthrough for the PRC’s first Tibetan director; fortunately, Tharlo is also an excellent film and a worthy introduction for viewers unfamiliar with Pema Tseden’s earlier work. Part of Tharlo’s relative accessibility is the striking character of the title, played by regional TV star Shide Nyima. Like the lead of Pema Tseden’s Old Dog (2011), Tharlo is a shepherd, but he cuts a decidedly stranger figure. In the opening scene, he recites a Mao speech (‘Serve the People’) from memory, impressing an officer at the local police station. The officer sends Tharlo to a nearby town to get a photo for an ID card; the photographer suggests he first

clean up at a hairdresser’s, where he meets the pretty young Yangtso (Yangshik Tso). For Tharlo, Yangtso incarnates the vices of the modern Tibetan woman, smoking cigarettes and keeping her hair short—yet he can’t keep her out of his head even after he leaves town and returns to his herd. The awkward (and frequently funny) relationship between Tharlo and Yangtso personifies the collision of tradition and modernity at the heart of the film. But Pema Tseden doesn’t sentimentalise Tharlo’s ‘traditional’ lifestyle, which appears to consist mainly of sitting alone in a remote shack. (The colourlessness of Tharlo’s routine gets a visual equivalent in the film’s stark black-and-white photography.) His background, which includes a meagre primary school education, has done little to prepare him for anything else; in fact, it seems to have left him ill-equipped for even basic human interaction. Yet Yangtso’s ‘modern’ attitudes, including a selfish and impractical wanderlust, hardly stand out as preferable. Tharlo’s modest but effective contribution to the endless discourse on old versus new is

RHUM BARBANCOURT: ELEGANCE IS AN ATTITUDE Skenny Darbouze talks to REDSTAR's editor about one of the world's best rums.

arbancourt is a rum renowned the world over. Its story began in 1862, when Dupré Barbancourt emigrated to Haïti, and started making rum according to the method he had perfected in his hometown of Charente, France. Although the descendants of Barbancourt’s wife, Nathalie Gardère, still fiercely protect the recipe today, what is known about Barbancourt is that it is made from fresh sugar cane juice instead of the sugarcane residue, molasses, used to make most rums; and furthermore, it is aged in cognac barrels, giving it a velvety texture that makes it ‘closer to a cognac’ than a rum, according to organiser of the Miami Rum Festival, Rob Burr. I tried the pineapple- and mangoflavoured Pango, the 8-year old “5 star” and the 15-year old Estate Reservé, although unfortunately the latter is very difficult to find in China, and was from Skenny’s personal collection. Pango tastes like a cocktail on it’s own, delicious, sweet, and spiced; the 8-year is rich, with more of a bite to its terrific woody flavour; and the 15-year is darker, mellower, smoother. A single ice cube is recommended by Skenny, to

cool down and enhance the rum’s flavourings. Now, I am not one to drink spirits straight up. Memories of cheap vodka from adolescence are enough to make me queasy, and the idea of drinking a rum on the rocks was nowhere near as appealing to my palate as it was to my imagination. It was with apprehension that I took a sip of the 8-year aged dark rum, but the sharp taste never came. Instead there was a deep, rich flavour, like cinnamon or caramel, running smoothly down my throat, filling me with warmth. It was nothing short of an absolute, remarkable pleasure, and I held the glass close to my face, breathing in the smell. Even more remarkable is Barbancourt’s business model. They do not wish to increase production, design an eye-catching bottle, or spend money on marketing. They’re not interested in the enormity of the Chinese market; bottle labels are still attached by hand. From November to January, when supply is limited due to domestic demand for Christmas and the Carnival, no export orders are taken whatsoever. “They’re satisfied. They don’t want to expand!” Skenny explains, with exasperation.

It doesn’t make sense – or does it? Barbancourt know their aims. As they summarise, they are the ‘rum of connoisseurs’. It would be ruined if it were a household name anywhere but on home soil (where it’s the national pride). What a refreshing kickback against capitalist logic. colours and soft music, and I relax and appreciate my surroundings for the first time since I entered the bar. “That’s exactly the feeling you want from a glass of rum,” Skenny says. “For it to go through your whole body, to soothe you. We say in Haïti, this is the perfect medicine. You’re happy? Have some Barbancourt. You’re sad? Have some Barbancourt. Tired? Sick? With a lover, alone? Have a glass of Barbancourt. It makes everything just a little better.”

The owners of Lisa’s Bistro have branched out to provide the only allday brunch in the city. The result is a spacious, wood-furnished cafe with large windows that give the space an atrium feel, and a great, vegetarian-friendly menu including Eggs Benedict (with meat, salmon, or without); pancakes with maple syrup, toasted nuts and mascarpone; and french toast with bacon. Staff are well-trained and attentive, and deal well with specific requests. They have fresh orange juice, their coffee is fantastic (and only 15RMB on weekends), and if you’re feeling extravagant, mimosas and Bloody Marys are also on the menu. The district now has a direct link to Qingdao's old town - the Jiaozhouwan tunnel has cut journey times to around 20 minutes and more or less put the old ferry terminal out of business.
